EDGEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL OF THE SACRED HEART 15th Annual Edgewood in the Community Service Day Wednesday, October 1 was the annual Edgewood in the Community service day when students, faculty and parents make a joint volunteering effort. The day highlights the mission of Edgewood High School while continuing to build relations with the greater Madison area. This year Edgewood served 44 service agencies and provided more than 3,500 hours of community service during this one-day event.

Print finds its way back home Before the Sacred Heart Academy structure was razed in 1969, the Sisters had an auction at which many of the contents were sold. Among the items was a sepia print of The Assumption of the Virgin, an oil painting by the 16th-century artist Titian. The print had hung in the entryway to the convent. In attendance at the auction was L. Claire Laughnan Armbrecht ’53 who saw and bought the framed image and appreciated it for decades. This fall, as she was trying to thin out her household items, she considered what to do with it. Some of the members of the class of 1953 meet annually and Claire mentioned it to the group who suggested perhaps it was time for the print to go back to its original home. Edgewood High School gladly accepted the print and appreciates having another piece of the school’s history in its hands once again.

Strike up the band At the end of November, the Edgewood students had an opportunity to work with jazz great Ron Carter in a mini-workshop. The versatile musician who plays a range of instruments but is best known as a doublebassist, has appearances on more than 2,500

albums and is one of the most-recorded bassists in jazz history. Edgewood also participated in a band exchange with Beloit Memorial High School in January. The two bands had a great time playing for one another, sharing ideas, and joined one another in a jam session at the end.

Students, Faculty and Staff Celebrate Service on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day On Sunday, January 18, Edgewood once again hosted the Urban League of Greater Madison as they celebrated the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with an Outstanding Young Person Breakfast. This breakfast attracted more than 900 youth, families, and community leaders. Many schools from all across Dane County nominate middle and high school students for the Outstanding Young Person Award based on their academic performance, community service, and extra-curricular participation. This year, 11 EHS students received Outstanding Young Person Awards (l-r): Phillip Joo Young Ahn ’16, Menatu Maaneb de Macedo ’17, Landry Ndahayo ’15, Anastasie Ndahayo ’18, Lauren Tatus ’15, Madison Thompson ’17, Carlen Krieghoff ’16, Maetraclare Maaneb de Macedo ’15, and Carmen Cruz ’18. Maroon & Gold Parties Maroon & Gold Parties support the annual Spring Auction & Social while providing parents and alumni with an opportunity to meet and mingle. Over the past several years, a number of EHS alumni and parents of current and former students have generously opened their homes and hosted Maroon & Gold parties small and large themed as tailgates, coffees, beer and cheese tastings and neighborhood potlucks. Some hosts ask guests to bring specific donations: bottles of wine or restaurant certificates; athletic tickets or items; gift cards; or items with a theme. Other hosts ask for a cash donation to put toward the purchase of a single expensive item. The Institutional Advancement staff will be happy to meet with you and assist with planning everything from invite lists, invitations and mailings to set-up and cleanup. A Lifelong Community Michael Elliott ’77, President Happy 2015. I hope this Edgewood message finds you in good health and in good spirits. Being a part of Edgewood at this time of year is exciting. Second semester ramps up to a faster pace for students and faculty and it seems that every night in the week there is an Edgewood event. The excitement, the energy and the time spent together at these events strengthen our sense of community. When I talk to alums, parents of alums and friends of Edgewood around the country they always talk about their Edgewood connections and reconnections. When I talk with students, the current parents and prospective Edgewood families, I tell them Edgewood is not just a choice for a four-year high school, it is a choice for a community of lifetime support. The value of an Edgewood education continues to improve. Our students continue to attend some of the best universities in America. Last year we had students accepted to 85 of the top 100 universities. Our alums are going on to major roles in major companies and organizations and playing crucial roles in their communities. All this adds to the reputation of Edgewood in the college ranks, the business world and the broader society. In addition, we continue to work on new and improved databases to allow current students seeking information on colleges to connect with Edgewood graduates who attended their colleges of interest. We are working on an alumni database to enable you to connect with fellow alums to gather information regarding a career choice or talk about a specific company or job opportunity. Many of our older alums are looking to reconnect or to gather helpful insights about places they plan to visit or hope to make their new home. Together, we are a trusted group of friends looking out for each other and always trying to help each other. Please stay in touch. We don’t know when, but each of us plays a role in another person’s success. That has always been the case at Edgewood and we strive to ensure it will be so in the future. Someone was there before you to help make Edgewood great for you. I hope you will return the favor in any way you can. If you are traveling to Madison or live here but have not been back, stop in. We would love to see you and give you a tour. Much is the same, but thanks to your support we have made good progress to upgrade an old and beautiful building—and with your help we will continue to offer the best learning environment possible for our talented and dedicated students. Thank you for being part of this unique and rewarding community called Edgewood. I promise you that whatever your age Edgewood still has something of value to offer you. We are always there for each other, we are a community for life. May God bless each of you.

Living the Mission Awards Recognize Distinguished Service and Achievements On Sunday, October 5, nearly 200 guests gathered at the Nakoma Golf Club to applaud the accomplishments of Edgewood graduates and the generosity of parents, alumni, parents of alumni and friends who have donated their time and treasure to the school over many years. The annual brunch, held at the off-campus venue as a more affordable option, merges donor recognition and awards ceremonies. Donors have a chance to see the results of their contributions exemplified by the range of ways in which people support and fulfill the mission of the school in their lives. Awards in some categories have been presented from as far back as 1979 and others have been instituted only recently. For complete biographies of award winners, visit Edgewood High School’s website, edgewoodhs.org.

Servant Heart Award RONALD F. KRANTZ ’65 UW Provision was built on the values of respect, excellence, integrity, social responsibility and legacy. From its founding in 1958, the company has grown into a $100 million supplier to grocers, restaurants, hospitals, commercial food services and retail customers throughout Wisconsin and much of the Midwest. Key to that growth has been Ron Krantz. Besides being very successful in business, Ron has taken to heart philanthropic causes throughout South Central Wisconsin and given generously in support of them with both his money and his time, doing so modestly and sometimes anonymously. Ron earned his bachelor’s degree from Madison Business College, but he is an avid Badger fan. He co-hosts the UW Provision Annual Steak Fry, raising funds for the UW Athletic program for more than two decades. In addition, he has funded a basketball scholarship and a football scholarship, the latter in memory of John Jardine. He enthusiastically attends football, basketball and hockey games and is an Honorary Member of the W Club. He also served as the national chair of the capital campaign for construction of the Kohl Center and has been a member of the Badger Basketball Board of Directors. Less visible to the Madison community, but of incredible importance to Edgewood, has been Ron’s commitment to supporting the school and Catholic education in general. He is a member of the Crusader Court at the

Ron is a lifetime member of the E Club that supports Crusader athletics, was the donor who made construction of the Krantz Center athletic facility possible, and has also invested in the Library, Business Department and the Music program. He makes substantial gifts to EHS every year and is one of the most generous auction donors and item purchasers. Ron served multiple terms on Edgewood’s Board of Trustees, from 1991 to 1997 and again from 1998 to 2001, was a co-chair of the EHS capital campaign of the late 1980s, and served on the EHS Athletic Board. While his sons attended Edgewood, his home was the site of events for athletes and coaches, and he was present at numerous events. Ron’s generosity has extended to a wide range of beneficiaries in education, youth, the arts, Catholic causes and medical care. He has also quietly or anonymously provided financial aid that has helped dozens of children attain a Catholic high school education. For his dedicated service and unbounded generosity, Ron was recognized in 1994 with the Madison Sports Hall of Fame Pat O’Dea Award for service to the UW Athletic Department and in 1995 with induction to Edgewood’s own Athletic Hall of Fame. He was also named 2003 Olympian of the Year by the Madison Area Service Clubs.

Dominican Award for Service to Humanity KIM MISTRETTA TEWS ’82 After a successful career as realtors, Kim Mistretta Tews ’82 and her husband Randy founded Outreach for World Hope (OWH) in 2005 with a mission of improving the quality of life of the world's poor through humanitarian aid, hope and compassion. OWH began as a ministry to provide inpatient hospital nutritional rehabilitation to children in the Chiquimula region of Guatemala and has blossomed into an organization with a number of successful programs. Its Lifeboat Program works to save the lives of children found in the end stages of starvation. The Virtual Village Program provides longterm care to at-risk families until the initially starved child reaches the age of 16. The Road to Independence Program offers training in food production to ensure the families’ future ability to be self-sufficient. In 2009, The Bucket Kit Garden Program was begun. One bucket kit is capable of feeding a family year-round as long as there is a water source available. The gardens have proven to be a huge success and are an exciting breakthrough as they provide food security regardless of erratic rainfall. A Hen Farming Program provides families with laying hens and a supply of feed. Participant families now have a steady supply of vegetables, protein and calcium, and are also able to sell the excess harvest and eggs they produce.

6 • Edgewood High School of the Sacred Heart Outreach for World Hope has partnered with local government to improve the quality and availability of education for children in the region and, with the help of visiting volunteer teams, has provided school supplies, computers and desks to under-equipped schools, expanded an overcrowded school, and provided scholarships to children to continue pursuing a higher level of education than is available in their communities.

Alumni Appreciation Award CHRISTOPHER J. ZWETTLER For 25 years, Edgewood High School has been fortunate to have Chris Zwettler as a teacher, Head Boys Basketball Coach, Summer Camps Director, Athletic Director and chief fundraiser for Crusader Athletics. “Coach Z” has the second-longest tenure in the history of the Athletic Department. During his first 10 years at EHS, the Crusaders played in and won four State titles in the now defunct WISAA. Since joining the WIAA in 1999, the Crusaders have captured more than 85 Badger Conference Championships on their way to winning more than two dozen team and individual State titles as well as a similar number of runner-up trophies. In 2013-14 Edgewood tied a WIAA record for the most State Championships in one calendar year with four and also set a record for the most State Championships in a single season by winning three titles in Fall 2013.

As Head Boys Basketball Coach, Chris has led the Crusaders to three Badger Conference Championships, three WIAA Regional titles, one Sectional title and one State Championship, in 2002. He is a three-time Badger Conference Coach of the Year, three-time City of Madison Boys Basketball Coach of the Year, and was AP Coach of the Year in 2002. Chris has overseen multiple facility upgrades at Edgewood, heads up the Athletic Association that provides volunteers for sporting and fundraising events and plays the leading role in the E Club, donors dedicated to supporting special projects and initiatives related to athletics. About 95% of the Crusader athletic teams’ budget must be raised by the Athletic Program, independent of the rest of the school. Over the years, Chris has raised nearly $12 million.

Fine Arts Hall of Fame PETER G. MCPARTLAND, JR. ’99 Pete’s love of the arts began in the EHS drama program. He earned a degree in Visual and Media Arts with a concentration in Film from Emerson College in Boston, and during his time there, also studied at the Academy of Performing Arts for Film and Television in Prague, Czech Republic. Pete produced and directed Sunny and Diane, a short film about a young homeless couple in Cambridge’s Harvard Square. Even

though it was a student film, Sunny and Diane went on to screen at the Boston Film Festival, the Wisconsin Film Festival in Madison, at Universal Studios in Orlando, and in New York, Toronto, Oklahoma City, and Sydney, Australia. The film won the award for Best Documentary at both the International Festival of Cinema and Technology and at Emerson’s EVVY awards. After college, Pete returned to Madison and co-founded Squeaky Wagon Productions where he produced several projects, including a local culinary and travel show, titled Cooking The Casbah, which aired over 50 episodes throughout Southern Wisconsin. Pete relocated to New York City in 2006 and has since achieved great success in the television industry, producing and directing for a wide range of programming aired on various networks, including Chopped, CBS News, The Next Food Network Star, The Principal’s Office, and Impractical Jokers, among others. In 2013, Pete won an Emmy Award in the Outstanding Culinary Program category for his work as executive producer and director of Trisha’s Southern Kitchen on the Food Network. He is currently the executive producer/showrunner of Impractical Jokers and is also executive producer for a new sketch-comedy spinoff of Impractical Jokers, titled Jokers Wild!.

Athletic Hall of Fame JOHN F. GOLDEN ’71 A four-year letter winner in golf while at Edgewood High School, John Golden also lettered twice in both football and basketball. In his senior year he was quarterback for the football team and captain of the basketball team, both of which were the first in their sport to play against Madison public schools. The basketball team went on to capture 3rd Place at the WISAA State Tourney. John was named to the All-City Second Team in both sports. He was also named the 1971 recipient of the EHS Tom McCormick Award for outstanding athlete. After graduating, John attended Notre Dame where he earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting. Still dedicated to his collegiate alma mater, John is a member of the Notre Dame Alumni Club. The sport in which John truly made his mark, however, was golf. He played in four WISAA State Golf Championships and was a member of the EHS 3rd Place team in 1971. John was Nakoma Golf Club Champion in 1974, and later emerged as a two-time Mid Amateur Champion, in 1989 and 1991. He and his son Andy took the 1990 State Father/Son Golf Championship. John has been named to the Madison Legends of Golf. John also lent his expertise to EHS as Assistant Coach for the Boys Golf Team from 1996 to 1998, and various basketball coaching positions, from 1992 to 2003, including the 2002 State Champions. John also was influential in starting the Edgewood chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. John was recognized with the Sertoma Club’s Man of the Year award in 2000 at both the local and district levels. As well as serving at Edgewood, he has volunteered for many years with youth sports and his parish. Since 2005, John has belonged to First Tee, encouraging youth to take up golfing. Professionally, John has more than three decades of experience in sales, marketing, insurance and benefits. He currently works for Humana Inc. in Madison as manager of Concentra telesales operations. This year, because the Edgewood Athletic Association wanted to recognize a large number of recipients, an additional ceremony was held before and during half-time of a football game on Friday, September 26, 2014 at Otto K. Breitenbach ’41 Field at Middleton High School, where Edgewood hosts its home football games. At the event, the following people were inducted to the EAA Athletic Hall of Fame.

PEGGY KELLY GIERHART ’86 When Edgewood High School started a Girls Golf Team in 1982, freshman Peggy Gierhart signed up and she continued with the team through her senior year. She earned a golfing scholarship to Pepperdine University. In college, Peggy played #1 on her golf team and won the 1987 Air Force Academy Collegiate invite. Besides playing on school teams, Peggy won the Wisconsin PGA State Junior tournament in 1984 (16s) and won the Madison City Junior golf tournament in 1985-1986 and played at a national junior level competing in multiple AJGA events. She won the Madison Women’s City Golf Tournament in 1988, 1989 and 1990 and captured the Wisconsin WWSGA State Match Play Championship in 1990. She was an LPGA teaching pro at Indian Hill Club in Winnetka, Illinois, from 1993 until 1998 and University Ridge Golf Club from 2000 to 2002, when she regained her amateur status. Since then, she has claimed numerous titles and been repeatedly named both the Madison Hall of Fame Club’s Sportswoman of the Year and was the Wisconsin State Golf Association Player of the Year in 2005 (also in 1990). Since 2003, Peggy has been the Head Girls Golf Coach at Edgewood High School. Her teams have taken 10 WIAA State Championships, 12 Regional titles, 10 Sectional titles, 11 Conference titles, and collected more than 100 wins. In addition to coaching a golfing dynasty, Peggy has encouraged the team to support community causes; as an example the team sponsors the annual Crusade Fore A Cure to raise funds for breast cancer research. Peggy has served as a Board member and All-State Chair of the Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin since 2006. She volunteered for the Western Golf Association (1994-2004), the Maple Bluff Golf Committee (2007-2010), and regularly volunteers as a golf instructor for junior golf in Madison during the summer. GEORGE E. “CHIP” MACKENZIE ’85 Chip MacKenzie was a notable athlete while at Edgewood High School. In both his junior and senior years, Chip was named to the All-City Team in baseball. He excelled at basketball, earning All-City honors as both a junior and senior, and named to the All-Area Team as a senior.

He was a member of two WISAA State Runner-up teams (1984 and 1985), and was named to the WISAA All-Tournament Team in 1985. In summer 1986, he won a gold medal as part of Team USA in the World Friendship Games in Sydney, Australia. He also participated in baseball and basketball at Edgewood College, where he earned a degree in business administration. As an Eagle he scored more than 1,000 career points in basketball and set the school record for points scored in a single game (46). He was named to the All-Conference Team in 1987 and 1988 and to the AllDistrict Team in 1988. He served as the Assistant Varsity Boys Basketball Coach for the Crusaders, 1988–1998. He then left to join his brother, Dana ’90, at Pecatonica High School where he was a teacher’s aide and Assistant Varsity Boys Basketball Coach, helping lead the team to its first State Tournament and a State Runner-up title in 2002. In 2002, Chip became the Head Coach at Pecatonica. In summer 2005 he co-founded the Wisconsin Swing AAU Basketball program with Dana. He also accepted the position of Men’s Basketball Video Coordinator at UW-Milwaukee and began teaching in UWM’s Sports and Recreation Department. Chip accepted the UWM Director of Basketball Operations position in April 2008. He managed the operating budget and arranged all logistics including practices, travel, community service and team apparel. UWM was Horizon League Conference Champion (2006 and 2011), and HLC Tournament Champion (2006 and 2014), participated in the NCAA Tournament (2006 and 2014), the National Invitational Tournament in 2011 and the College Basketball Invitational Tournament in 2012. On the basketball court, he helped advance the team to 1966 WCIAA State Runner-up and was a captain of the team in 1966-67, earning the Tom Hoffman Award. He played baseball sophomore to senior years. Both the Wisconsin State Journal and The Capital Times named him to the All-City First Team in 1966 and 1967 and he was selected in both years for the All-State Tournament team. John attended the University of Florida where he played football and baseball, earning letters as a junior and senior. He joined Sigma Chi and Omicron Delta Kappa fraternities and was a member of the F Club. After earning a degree in business administration he returned to Madison and also earned a master’s in real estate/urban land economics at UW-Madison. Since 1975, John has been president of Flad Development and Investment. He has served on numerous local boards, including the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce, and was a founding board member of both the Madison Ronald McDonald House and American Family Children’s Hospital. 1966 EDGEWOOD VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM As the cool, dry fall of 1966 ran through the months leading up to Thanksgiving, the Crusaders football team was chalking up school records that stand to this day. It was the first season as head coach for the 29year-old George Chryst, who had served as an assistant coach with the legendary Earl Wilke for five of the previous seven years. As freshmen in 1963, these same players had won all seven of their games and posted an impressive 141 points (20.1/game) with the defense holding their opponents to a humbling total of just 28 points. In the next two seasons, as JV Crusaders, they added 10 more wins to their record, including another three shut-outs in 1964. With the 1966 football season, the seniors on the team repeated their impressive freshman showing by notching another undefeated season. The 1966 Crusaders owned the gridiron, blitzing their opponents with a blazing 288 points earned in the undefeated eight-game season, for an amazing unexcelled EHS record of 36 points per game. They also set the school record for points scored in a single game when they put 60 points on the board against West Bend. What made the season special for all the players was that, after the first two games, even the reserves saw significant field time as the first string

locked in solid leads after the first half of games. The 1966 season stats show just how dominant the Crusaders were. On the ground, the gritty offensive line opened holes for the backs for a total of 1,583 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns, while the impenetrable defensive squad held opponents to 655 rushing yards and 6 TDs. The Crusaders lofted 141 passes with a 62% completion rate, twice that of opposing teams, for a total of 1,679 yards and 23 touchdowns, compared to a mere 541 passing yards and 2 touchdowns for their opponents. The Crusader defense even scored 2 TDs on recovered fumbles they returned down the field. Along the way to their 43 TD season total, the 1966 team squelched the efforts of their competitors, who were limited to only 8 touchdowns (an average of just one per game!). Over the four years that saw the Crusader seniors go from scrappy freshmen to seasoned players, 1963 to 1966, the four teams they played on won 90% of their games assembling a 25-3 record, one of the most impressive in school history. The Sweet Sound of Music

Perhaps one of the violins Edgewood recently received is seen in this image from St. Regina Academy, the first school established in Madison by the Sinsinawa Dominicans.

Music has been an integral part of the Sinsinawa Dominican educational tradition since the beginning. Photos from St. Clara Academy and the Sister’s early sponsored schools include images of Sisters holding string instruments. Over a period of more than 150 years, the Congregation has accumulated quite a collection brought by the young women who joined and given by donors. In September, the Sisters gave 20 violins, a cello, and a number of bows to Edgewood. The instruments, ranging from “good” condition to “in need of repair,” will gradually find their way into the high school’s reserve of instructional and performance string instruments for orchestra students. While none of the instruments is exceptionally valuable, many in the collection are attributed to famous violin-makers or are noted to be wellexecuted copies and may merit further research. M. Regina Pawelski, OP wrote a blessing for the transfer of the instruments that said, “May their voices, silent for too long, once again ring out with joy and praise of your Holy Name and be valued, appreciated and played with loving, gentle hands.”

Musings: Staying True to Our Founding Spirit and Values Dennis R. McKinley ’63 Her words first caught me by surprise, then they slowly sunk in, and then the words became an affirmation. But let me back up a bit… A responsibility that the veteran faculty and staff members have felt since the last Sinsinawa Dominican sister taught here is, “How do we pass on the charism and spirit of the sisters to the younger faculty and staff?” This concern becomes even more urgent as those of us who taught the longest with the sisters are rapidly approaching retirement age. Over the last number of years, we have made an effort to incorporate the Dominican values of Truth, Compassion, Justice, Partnership and Community into the curriculum and co-curricular activities. The faculty and staff take retreat trips to the Sinsinawa Dominican motherhouse at The Mound to touch base with our roots, and, more recently, we have started the school year with a combined Back-toSchool/Dominican Heritage Day, celebrated Venerable Fr. Samuel Mazzuchelli on his birthday with Founder’s Day, and have had sisters speak to the faculty and staff as well as to the entire school at prayer services. Mostly, though, we have tried to teach through example by living out the Sinsinawa Dominican values. Now… back to the beginning! The Class of 1964 was celebrating its 50-year reunion

over a long weekend in October 2014. After attending a delightful “ice-breaker” evening on Friday, a wonderful party on Saturday evening, and Mass in the EHS chapel on Sunday morning, class members took a tour of Edgewood which I was leading. Along with us was Sr. Roberte (later known as Sr. Suzanne) Lorentz, who taught at EHS from 1961 to 1964 and then again from 1969 to 1984. During the tour, I kept pointing out and making references to Fr. Samuel and the Sinsinawa Dominican values, and how they are being lived out in Edgewood today. That’s when Sr. Sue said something to the effect of, “I think the students know more about these things now than when the sisters were here. When sisters were here, because it was taken for granted that the sisters had received the formation during their preparation for the sisterhood, it was somehow perhaps assumed that the lay faculty, staff and students also knew the same information.” She later went on to say, “I think because we (the sisters) are not ‘on the scene,’ there is a more concerted effort to make known the values, the history/heritage, and Fr. Samuel's role in founding the Sinsinawa Dominicans.” A surprise? Yes! An affirmation of what we’ve been trying to do? Yes! But also a challenge! If Edgewood High School of the Sacred Heart is to remain true to its roots and teach/live out the Sinsinawa Dominican mission, we, as a faculty and staff, must remain committed to “passing on the genes,” keeping the stories alive, in-servicing the new/younger faculty, and remaining constantly aware that every school year

brings new freshmen, some transfer students and new families into our midst. Edgewood High School used to be a school staffed by those who were avowed Sinsinawa Dominicans. Now, we are staffed by “Dominicans of adoption”—lay people who believe strongly enough in the legacy Fr. Samuel and the Sisters left us that we’re willing to go the extra mile to keep that legacy alive and present. What can you as member of the Edgewood community do to help? Pray that the Holy Spirit will keep the spirit of Fr. Samuel and the Sisters alive and well at Edgewood. While financial support is necessary, prayers are needed to help those of us “in the trenches” to have the strength, foresight, knowledge and spirit to continue the work begun here so many years ago.

Jim Wermuth ’53 (at left) shared this picture taken when he was an altar boy serving with Father Bacon in the convent chapel. Also pictured are his brothers, Bob ’49, Jerry ’54 and Arthur “Corky” ’60.

EHS Earns Alumni Approval

Share Your Experiences for Book on EHS Football History Research for a book on the history of the Edgewood football program proceeded at a fast pace this past summer. Numerous interviews of football alumni have been conducted including football team members from the EHS classes of 1939 through 2009. Historic newspaper clippings and historic photos have been collected, too. Co-authors Mike Mentzer ’67 and Tom Martinelli ’67 plan to include memories of coaches, players, and memorable games in the book. If you have stories related to these Halfback Larry “Trigger” Esser holds topics, football off defenders from Chicago De LaSalle. game photos, or Photo from 1949 Edgewood Yearbook scrapbooks that you would be willing to share, Mike and Tom would like to hear from you. They are especially looking for a copy of the 1940 Edgewood yearbook. Writing will continue through 2015 and a book launch will be scheduled for the 2016 football season. Contact Tom Martinelli at 608.233.2850 or tmartinelli@tds.net for additional information.

James Imhoff III ’93, EHSAA Advisory Council President I recently served on a committee charged with assessing the role alumni play in the Edgewood High School community and the opinions they hold about their experience and the school. The assessment was part of the recertification process for ISACS, an organization that provides accreditation, professional development, and support services to more than 230 independent schools throughout the Midwest. A number of interesting facts arose during our assessment, and I can confidently say the alumni continue to hold Edgewood in very high regard. The responses to a recent survey were shared with our group and I was pleased to note that both younger and older graduates (please feel free to take as much liberty as you’d like when classifying yourself ) have a positive overall attitude about the school. In fact, Edgewood respondents provided a positive response 81.6% of the time, higher than the average of all schools ISACS surveyed, which is 80.4%. Younger alumni tended to have a slightly higher positive response rate of 87.0%, while those considered older gave an 80.8% positive rate. Parents of EHS alumni offer the highest rating, with 95.7% giving positive responses compared to the overall 81.6% of the total ISACS respondents. While those are fantastic numbers, the administration strives to do even better. They encouraged our committee to specify perceived strengths of the school, but also to identify the challenges the school faces. The administration also solicited our input on future initiatives and priorities. The results of our input, along with those of numerous other committees charged with similar tasks, will be highlighted in the completed report to be submitted to ISACS. I look forward to learning more about the state of Edgewood when the complete ISACS report becomes available. It is very impressive and comforting that Edgewood High School has committed to the accreditation process. The time and energy required, along with the expertise of the faculty and staff, is quite evident after playing a small role in such an important endeavor.

Reunion Scenes 1948 Marie Saeman Soderholm, Eunice Schoepp Schmitz, Douglas Yanggen, Marguerite Regan Bernards, Marcus Roelke and Patricia Baines Hart attended the class of 1948’s 66th anniversary reunion on September 11, 2014 at Rex’s Innkeeper in Waunakee, Wisconsin.

1954 Mary Anne Castle Sobek submitted news that the class of 1954 held its 60th anniversary reunion on August 15–16, 2014. The group met on Friday evening for a casual “get reacquainted” gathering with hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar at the Knights of Columbus. Dennis McKinley ’63 welcomed the alumni and Sr. Connie Fahey FSM gave a presentation on her mission trips to Zambia. On Saturday morning, Jo Jean Kehl Janus hosted a kaffeeklatsch at her Lake Mendota boathouse. That evening the class went to Babe’s American Grill for dinner. Entertainment was a skit highlighting some of the events of 1936, the year that class members were born. Mary Anne says, “We enjoyed the company of those classmates who attended; we missed those who were unable to attend; and we remembered our classmates who are no longer with us. Thanks go to the members of the planning committee for their hard work. Thank you, all who attended and made it a success. We look forward to seeing you again. In the words of Garrison Keillor, ‘Be well…and keep in touch.’” Thanks to Ray Kehm for the “composite” photo below.
