Since 2000, Homecoming Week has featured a day dedicated to volunteerism at schools, parks, nursing facilities, food pantries, social service organizations and other locations who have come to depend on the enthusiasm, energy and time contributed by members of the EHS community.

…but service is more than a one-day effort While Edgewood in the Community is a one-day, school-wide expression of the school’s mission, students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni—and this year, Edgewood Campus School 8th graders— participate in service activities throughout the year. More than half of EHS seniors graduate having exceeded their personal 100-hour service requirement. Other examples of service carried out throughout the year include an annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, a Giving Tree Program, musical performances at venues throughout the city, run/walks, the events pictured here, and the numerous volunteer activities carried out by alumni, as represented by our Living the Mission award recipients and many others included in “Alumnews.”

Michael Elliott ’77, President The temperatures may be cold, but the second semester schedule and activities are really warming up. As a community we are busy getting ready for an inspiring Catholic Schools Week, February 1-6 and an entertaining and educational Fine Arts Week February 24-26. Both these weeks are highlights for Edgewood faculty, staff and students every year.

Another special event held every spring at Edgewood is the Academic Excellence Awards evening where we honor students with a 3.9 or above cumulative grade point average. I am extremely proud that this year 185 freshmen to senior students, slightly more than one third of the student body, have achieved this high honor.

The ISACS Accreditation self-study and visit went very well. We await reaccreditation in February when we will receive the report that will serve as a catalyst for Edgewood’s new 5-year strategic plan.

We continue to work on enrollment for the 2016-2017 school year. We need your help. Our students, parents and alumni are our best recruiters and ambassadors. Please, tell a family about your experience at Edgewood: what you like, why you chose Edgewood and what makes Edgewood special and different. Help them understand the value and success of the values-based, Catholic education provided by Edgewood High School. There are many distinctions and differences to promote. If you would like more information or have a name to share, please contact Marcia Lovett in the Admissions Office.

For those of you who can relate to not receiving the coveted EHS parking pass, I am excited to report that most of the hurdles have been cleared and I am confident we should receive our permit to proceed with the Commons parking lot expansion in early February.

Construction would begin when weather permits in spring. This expansion will add 68 badly needed parking spaces. If you would like to help us fund this expansion, please contact me.

Phase One of the Goodman Athletic Complex is nearly complete.

beautiful and allows football, soccer, lacrosse and ultimate frisbee to practice on site. Batting cages were added this fall to allow baseball and softball to practice on campus this spring. A new scoreboard was also added in the fall.

In an effort to be able to provide real-time current event coverage three new, large monitors were installed in the Commons. These displays will also be used to communicate to the students, sharing daily announcements, providing information on events and adding additional space for large group presentations.

We continue to move forward with technology as an aid to learning at Edgewood. Recently we updated our 3-year technology plan and our 1:1 Chromebook initiative is receiving high marks based on a recent student survey. We continue to explore how technology can be used to increase learning and expand teaching methodologies.

Thanks go out to everyone who made contributions to Edgewood at the end of the calendar year. If you have not yet given this school year, please remember our goal is 100% participation. The higher the rate of participation by alumni, current and past families, the more likely it is that foundations, businesses and other major donors will provide grants and sponsorships to Edgewood. We need to be in the 80% range to receive serious consideration and funding. Our fiscal year does not end till June 30. Please do your part as others previously did for you by giving what you can to help us meet our goals. Your generosity will allow us to continue to improve our facilities and curriculum and help us keep the cost of an Edgewood education as affordable as possible.

As you can see, we are very busy. My goal is to continue to build one of the “Best High Schools in America” and educate future leaders for our community and world.

Students Excel in Academics and Leadership Every one of the 151 graduates in the class of 2015 took the ACT test and earned an average composite score average of 26.3! This average is 4.1 points above the state average and 5.3 points above the national average. To top it off, two seniors, Justin Dragoo and Thomas Meyer, received a perfect score of 36 on their ACT tests.

What an amazing accomplishment!

In addition, we are proud to announce this year’s EHS National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists: seniors Philip Ahn, Jennifer Gisi, Jacob Graham, Ruby Ladd, Mary Lazar and Thomas Thelen.

We wish them well as they pursue advancement to the Finalist stage at which 6,500 scholarships will be awarded. The following seniors were named Commended Students: Joseph Albrecht, Tess Heinrichs, Grace Ingham, Nathaniel Langlie, Thomas Meyer, Will Scerpella, Evelyn Stein, Grace Welton and Andrew Wenman. Great job, seniors!

We are also want to recognize seven student recipients of the Outstanding Young Person Award, presented at the Urban League of Greater Madison’s 32nd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Recognition Breakfast, hosted by EHS, for more than 900 area youth, families, and community leaders. Congratulations go to Joshua Duffek, Keyanna George, Pax Habimana, Jesse Jarreau, Carnita Lincoln, Anastasie Ndahayo and Yuritzi Rosado Lagunes.

The Wayfarer Receives Highest Award

On “Giving Tuesday,” December 1, 2015, Mark Thering and Edgewood High School received a surprise gift from alumni and other donors who contributed to a naming opportunity. A plaque on a seat in the Sr. Kathleen O’Connell Auditorium now recognizes his unassuming dedication for the past 41 years to the students of Edgewood and his award-winning work on set construction and design. The 2015 edition of Edgewood’s student literary and art magazine, The Wayfarer, received a “Highest Award” from the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). The Wayfarer is the only Wisconsin high school literary magazine to receive this highest honor and one of only 24 national secondary school magazines to be recognized with the “Highest Award.”

In the magazine’s 30-year history, it has consistently received a “Superior” rating and this is the fourth time that NCTE bestowed its “Highest Award” on The Wayfarer in recognition of a publication that includes excellent student writing and shows evidence of school-wide participation in the production of the magazine.

Crusader Sports Fall Update CROSS COUNTRY

Boys: The runners placed 2nd at Conference and Sectionals, qualifying for State where the team placed 8th.

Girls: At the Portage Invitational, the team defeated eventual Sectional Champion and State Meet qualifier Lodi. In the Badger Conference Challenge, their 4th Place finish was the best by a Badger North team.

GIRLS SWIM & DIVE After winning Conference and Sectionals, this year’s team was the first Edgewood team to ever win a Girls State Swim Championship, by nearly 60 points. Kaitlyn Barth ’19, Maggie McNeil ’16 Issy Petersen ’19 and Kelly Rodriguez ’18 were State Champions in the 200 Freestyle Relay with the fifth fastest time in state history; several EHS school records also fell. Ginger Lingard ’17 was crowned State Diving Champion for the third straight year and new teammate Gracy Conroy ’18 placed 8th.

The Crusader Earns Jostens Recognition Jostens’ National Yearbook Program of Excellence recognizes engaging yearbooks that reflect a broad representation of the student body while helping students develop 21st century skills in communication, collaboration, and information and communication technologies. The “Excellence Award” was presented to The Crusader for achievement in creating an inclusive yearbook, generating school engagement, and successfully managing the yearbook creation process. “Yearbooks connect students’ hearts and minds to the school story, school year experiences, and the community to memorialize moments that matter,” said Murad Velani, chief operating officer at Jostens. In the congratulatory letter, Jostens particularly cited The Crusader for inclusiveness, “While the goal is to get 50% of students in the book 3 or more times, the 2015 staff found ways to cover 90% of Edgewood students in the book three times or more!”

Math Toying with 3-D In October, UW-Madison Mechanical Engineering professor Krishnan Suresh presented a 3-D printing demonstration for Edgewood math teachers in the EHS computer lab. Calculus teacher John Hylkema, who already had some familiarity with 3-D printing and has been incorporating the concept into his 2nd Year Calculus class, shared with Krishnan the catapult model the students had created. John is now helping other faculty design some basic programs specific to Geometry and Algebra 2 and the faculty hope to share their knowledge and excitement with math students.

Living the Mission: Distinguished Alumni, Parents, Friends and Donors Recognized for Service and Dedication to Edgewood High School At the annual Living the Mission awards ceremony and donor recognition event, six people received plaques or other awards and were acknowledged for their achievements and their generous contributions as professionals, philanthropists and volunteers.

DIANE K. ENDRES BALLWEG ’71 Servant Heart Award Edgewood is proud to acknowledge one of its own as a caring person, a generous philanthropist, a hardworking teacher, an enthusiastic life-long learner and a civic leader.

Diane worked as a special education and music teacher, and founded and directed the “Chosen Few” youth choir. She has served on the boards of the Madison Boy Choir and Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra and was also active in the Madison Area Teachers Association. Under her leadership, the Endres Manufacturing Co. Foundation has grown substantially and Diane’s first major personal contribution was $3 million toward the Great Performance Fund in support of the Overture Center. Diane is responsible for significant contributions to the theatre renovation at Edgewood High School, to the expansion of Edgewood Campus School, and was the lead donor on “The Stream,” the dramatic visual and dramatic arts facility at Edgewood College. Her list of philanthropic and service affiliations encompasses several dozen arts, aviation, manufacturing, music, and educational organizations. Diane is also passionate about flying. In 2000, she founded the Aviation program at EHS and has been the instructor for the courses since then. She has been an active member of the Edgewood Athletic Association and ENCORE for the arts at EHS, held the EHS Development Director position, served on the Edgewood Board of Trustees and chaired several committees, and she continues to oversee the Endres Manufacturing Co. Foundation as its president and as a company board member.

DAVID L. STEIN Alumni Appreciation Award Dave Stein completed his term as chairman of the Edgewood High School Board of Trustees in mid-2015, serving in that capacity during a period of transformation of the school’s facilities and several successful years of fundraising. Dave joined Edgewood’s Board in 2010, was a member during the search for a new president, and has been critical to both the successful transition and the school’s rapid progress during Mike Elliott’s first years. Dave established a committee to increase recruitment of students of color and has been a involved in a key role in the past year as Edgewood has conducted an exploration of the possibilities for a future capital campaign. He has been available for consultation and has worked on projects for the school early in the morning and late into the night. Dave’s wife, Jenny, a 1980 alumna, has also played an active role at the school, supporting a wide range of activities and as a member of the Edgewood Parent Community group of volunteers, including serving as the president, 2012-2013. As an executive vice president at Associated Bank since 2005, Dave has been influential in steering financial support and sponsorships from the bank for events from Edgewood in the Community day of service to the Northwoods Golf Invitational and Wilke Golf Outing to Trivia Night to theatre programs. He and Jenny are equally generous in their personal giving to Edgewood High School, with leadership gifts as Four-Front Parents, support of the ENCORE

fine arts donor group and other contributions. He has also devoted his time and talents to civic, health and arts organizations in Madison, serving on the boards of St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation, Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, and Madison Repertory Theater.

SR. CONSTANCE P. FAHEY, FSM ’54 Dominican Award for Service to Humanity Sister Constance has ministered in a variety of roles in health care over the last 60-plus years.

Early on, she served at St. Louis University Hospitals, Cardinal Glennon Memorial Hospital for Children, and Mercy Hospital in Champaign Urbana.

In 1977, Sr. Constance moved to South Carolina, where she established a School of Medical Technology, directed an educational program for allied health professionals, and initiated Mercy Hospice to serve terminally ill persons and their families. She returned to St. Louis to become executive director of the SSM Health Care System’s Central Office, before becoming a regional vice president and coordinating a series of medical institution projects. She helped oversee the reunification process of two Franciscan congregations to form the Franciscan Sisters of Mary and then served on the Leadership Team for eight years. In 1995, she returned to South Carolina as executive director at Mercy Hospice and Palliative Care. Sr. Constance was instrumental in establishing a transitional home for homeless women and children in

collaboration with a local Baptist Church and the City of Myrtle Beach. She also provided consultant and educational services, volunteered on the boards for several nonprofit organizations. She and another Franciscan sister established the Wholeness Holiness Retreat ministry for women. In 2010, Sr. Constance relocated to Janesville, Wisconsin, and continued doing spiritual direction, conducting retreats and fundraising. Today, she offers her services to St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital, advises on spiritual direction and participates in Janesville’s Catholic Church community life.

MARGARET BERIGAN MCKINLEY ’64 Mazzuchelli Award for Service to Christian Education Margaret Berigan McKinley began her teaching career in 1968 at St. Bernard Grade School in Middleton. When her first child was born, Margaret decided to be a stay-at-home mother, but she remained involved in Catholic education through service on the Education Commission at Our Lady Queen of Peace (QP), on the QP Council, including a year as president, and on the Queen’s Guild Board. She coached the QP cheerleaders, was a Cub Scout den mother and Girl Scout cookie chair, chaperoned trips and acted as theater house manager at Edgewood. While raising a family, which also included being a foster parent, Margaret worked in retail (parttime, then full-time), making it possible for her husband to stay teaching in a Catholic high school. Once the children were grown, Margaret was hired to be librarian at Queen of Peace School, where she was charged with overseeing the library expansion and refurbishment, the introduction of computers and electronic catalog/check-out systems, and an increased book inventory. Her greatest joy as librarian was acting as a “grandmother” to all the students, especially the younger ones.

While reading to them she developed the skills of holding the book facing the students with one hand, turning pages with the other, reading the story with (of course) the proper expression/emotion, and keeping an eye on 20 munchkins—all at the same time. A measure of Margaret’s success is the many notes she received throughout the year telling her how much the children loved library time, and it was common for one of her young students to run over and give her a big hug while she was shopping.

ANDREW J. KINNEY ’85 Fine Arts Hall of Fame An award-winning professional composer and orchestrator, Andrew is a member of the American Composers Forum, the Society of Composers and Lyricists, and the American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers. He has worked in Hollywood for more than 20 years, and as of 2015, has orchestrated music for more than 175 feature films, including “family” films like both Rio movies, Big Hero 6, Kung Fu Panda 2, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Ice Age: Continental Drift, Hop, and Horton Hears a Who; “action/ adventure” movies like Interstellar, Eagle Eye, and three of the Fast and Furious series; and “dramatic” films like The Pursuit of Happyness and Dolphin Tale. Andrew has contributed to more than a dozen TV series, including Star Trek: Enterprise, JAG, King of the Hill, and Once Upon a Time. In addition to his work as an orchestrator, Andrew composes original works for the concert hall that have been performed across the U.S. His most recent project is a commission for the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras’ 50th Anniversary Celebration Concert in 2016. Previously, he was commissioned by ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Ohio to compose Space Exploration: The Dream and the Endeavor; by the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra to compose Origins; and by the Illinois Music Educators Association to compose The Mystic Trumpeter: A Celebration of Music. His orchestral overture The Carnival was written for conductor David Becker, and has been performed by eight different orchestras since 1996. His orchestral tone poem Macbeth has received multiple performances as well, and Sonata for solo piano has been recorded by pianists Tomoko Deguchi and Kris Carlisle.

DANIEL J. O’CONNELL EAA Athletic Hall of Fame Dan is a partner and vice president at Astar/ Cardinal Capital Management, with four decades of experience in the development, construction and management of commercial real estate and affordable housing projects. He previously served as director of Bank One Trust Real Estate, and before that was a risk management officer for 16 years at WHEDA

working with the Wisconsin Housing Preservation Trust. Dan has served on the Edgewood Athletic Association Board for a decade and a half, and has enthusiastically helped to host the annual EAA Raffle, selling tickets, making personal phone calls to parents inviting them to attend, and working at the event. He was also especially involved with Edgewood Hockey when his boys played on the team. Dan has shown substantial support for the Edgewood athletic program as a lifetime member of the E Club and continues to contribute to athletics and Edgewood, making him a member of the Gold Court of donors. He was involved in the fundraising campaign for the renovation of the Sister Kathleen O’Connell Auditorium in memory of his aunt. In addition to his outstanding support of the Edgewood Crusaders athletic program, Dan serves on the Edgewood Business and Finance Committee and has been a member of the Investment Committee. He has volunteered as a coach for area high schools and youth programs in a range of sports. Dan is founder and president of Madison Ice, Inc., the nonprofit organiza-tion that owns and operates Madison Ice Arena and Hartmeyer Ice Arena, providing quality ice skating facilities and programs to youth hockey organizations, figure skating clubs, high school teams, adult leagues, Learn-to-Skate programs and the greater Madison Area community. In that role, he was influential in obtaining access to the Madison Ice Arena for the Crusaders.

Additional 2016 Inductees to EAA Hall of Fame At a separate recognition ceremony held in September at Breitenbach field in association with a Crusader football game, the Edgewood Athletic Association also inducted another five honorees to the Hall of Fame.

LEO J. COOPER, JR. ’39 (posthumous)

EAA Athletic Hall of Fame Leo Cooper earned seven varsity letters playing football and basketball in his high school career. He started all four years on the football team, was a member of the undefeated 1937 team and was captain of the team in the 1938 season. In basketball, he was a starter in his junior and senior years. He formed a lifelong friendship with Coach Earl Wilke, with “Coach” watching out for Leo throughout his continued on page 12

Your gift will be matched dollar for dollar by a $60,000 challenge from an anonymous donor! Funds raised help keep an Edgewood education more affordable by covering an $1,800 subsidy this year for every student and provides additional need-based tuition assistance for those least able to pay. Most importantly, we need to increase our participation percentage. Funding agencies want to see the commitment by those closest to us, so please give a gift of whatever size you can in order to help us raise the number of contributions Edgewood receives from current parents and alumni.

The other experience that stands out was when a young girl in a very short skirt came up to them and asked them to measure her skirt. “She said that her mom always told her about how the nuns measured the girls’ skirts to make sure their skirts were long enough to touch the floor when they knelt down. Of course, after the nuns had measured their skirts and they had passed inspections, they would go into the bathroom, unbutton their skirts and roll the waist band up so their skirts were shorter!”

The Sisters also take their mission seriously, however and have spread joy to others through appearances at numerous events. “McFarland Lionesses invited us to come and be the surprise entertainment for their Christmas Party in December. We have made two appearances now at Bright Star entertaining the residents with song and dance. On our first visit we sang songs from The Sound Of Music and we sang Christmas Carols on the second visit. We also sang carols at Sauk Gardens and Attic Angels Nursing Home and recently attended Lily’s Luau fundraiser for epilepsy research.

The Sisters of Chryst say they will continue their mission as long as they can and trademark laws will allow them.

Musings: Good In Deed Dennis R. McKinley ’63 Evangelization!

This is a word that most Catholics were not schooled in during their upbringing, even though it is part of what we take on through the Sacrament of Baptism. Those of certain ages will associate the word with Oral Roberts or Jim Baker on television. Others will associate it with people going door to door carrying pamphlets and wanting to engage you in conversation. Some will even associate it with the former Edgefest Follies when the group “Is the Pope Catholic?” sang the parody, “Mama, don’t let your babies grow up to be evangelists!” Interestingly enough, that’s exactly what we’re called to do—be evangelists. Let me tell you about two examples of evangelization that I have experienced even though the “evangelists” didn’t realize it at the time.

I was talking with a man about his experiences in the US Army. He happened to have served during the Korean War years, although he never had to go to Korea itself.

He fought the war stationed in a remote outpost in the then Territory of Alaska.

Having experienced a Catholic upbringing in a small Wisconsin town, he brought with him a sense of morals and values that did not necessarily coincide with those with whom he was serving. He told me about how some of the men would go into the nearest village on their days off and avail themselves of some of the local women. He would be teased about not participating, even to the point that some of the others offered to “pay his way” if he would go with them. He declined, choosing to adhere to what he knew was morally correct and what he needed to do to live up to his faith and his upbringing.

Jumping ahead almost a half century, I encountered another man. He and his wife had been married for a long time, raised a family and enjoyed the grace of seeing their grandchildren born and starting to grow up.

While they were lovingly devoted to each other, they also had their own paths in life to which they gave their best efforts, one as a business person, the other as a volunteer.

Both gave freely of their time, talent and treasure to help make this a better world. A few years ago, the wife passed away after an

extended illness. I attended her funeral where her husband, children and grandchildren greeted people before the Mass and then, as would be expected, they sat in the first pews to mourn, celebrate and pray for this woman they loved. Late that same afternoon, I visited a wake for another deceased person on the opposite side of town. As I was driving out of the parking lot, I saw this man who had just buried his wife that morning walk into the wake to help comfort another family.

These are but two examples of being witness to Jesus’ teaching that I have been fortunate to have in my life; the first having the courage to live the Gospel message even under adverse circumstances, and the other to live out the Corporal Work of Mercy to “Bury the Dead” and live the virtue of compassion even when one is suffering.

There are many, many more that could be cited, but the point is that we evangelize by the way we choose to live our lives. It’s not necessarily the big things we say or do, but, rather, the small things, the choices we make, the way we live our day-to-day lives that can be our greatest means of evangelizing others. Even little things can make a difference. For example, do you choose to send Christmas cards that reflect the message of Christ coming into the world or do you opt for celebrating a secular version of the holiday? For Christmas card postage, do you choose the religious stamp or the Santa Claus stamp? Do sympathy cards you send reflect a message of prayer or just condolences? Do you take the time to welcome the stranger into your midst or just greet the people you know? How about letting the person behind you in the grocery checkout line who has only a few items go ahead of you and your full cart of groceries?

And while you’re at it, take time to thank the checkout clerk and the person who bagged your groceries!

Almost every action or decision we make during the day can become a moment of evangelization if for no other reason than to “re-evangelize” ourselves. We’re choosing to live either as Jesus taught or as the world teaches.

So how is this connected to Edgewood High School? While not revealing their names or violating their privacy, I will mention that one of the men mentioned above was an EHS teacher, and the other is an EHS parent of alumni and a current grandparent!

Living the Mission continued from page 7 teen years, providing advice and steering him through good times and bad. Leo began attending the University of WisconsinMadison and was a member of the football team in fall 1939, but illness forced him to withdraw from school.

Throughout his life, Leo remained active in sports, including more than three decades of pitching fast-pitch softball and bowling.

He was the CYO boys’ coach at St. James Parish in the 1960s and was a manager for women’s fast-pitch softball from the mid-70s to mid-80s. It was his life of beyond the athletic arena, however, that truly distinguished Leo. In addition to being a railroad switchman for 40 years, he had a long and distinguished career dedicated to public service. Leo served on the Board of Estimates, the Madison Redevelopment Authority, the Madison Housing Authority, the Housing Relocation and Welfare Study, the Madison Police and Fire Commission and the Governor’s Steering Committee for the State Office Building. He was also on the Board of Directors of the Bayview Foundation, which sponsored low-income housing units. He was active at St. James Church and was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus. Leo served as a member of the Madison City Council from 1963 to 1971, and during his eight years introduced and co-sponsored more legislation than any other city official in Madison history, and saw 97% of it passed.

DANIEL R. HUBER ’54 EAA Athletic Hall of Fame Dan Huber was an outstanding student and three-sport athlete who excelled at football and track, but stood out for his basketball skills. In his senior year, Dan led the 1953-54 basketball team on an 18-game winning streak, finishing the regular season with an 18-1 record and the entire season at 21-2.

The team finished in third place in the Catholic State Tournament and Dan was selected to be a member of the Catholic AllState Basketball First Team. He was also named to the Capital Times “All-City Five” First Team. Dan’s teammates chose him for the honor of Most Valuable Player. Dan served as captain of the track team and also won the E Club Award for the person who had done the most for the organization during the previous year. After college and military service, Dan joined Cargill, Inc. He

progressed up the ranks, spending most of his career in grain merchandising/trading in the U.S. and abroad, before being named president of the Commodity Division in 1980, then president of Cargill International in 1985 and president of the Worldwide Agricultural Sector in 1990. Dan moved to Singapore as president of Cargill Asia Pacific in 1995 to oversee Cargill’s development and operations in 16 countries throughout the region. He has earned the Distinguished Business Award from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Business School and the “Significant Sig” Award from Sigma Chi. In his retirement, Dan has raised cattle and buffalo. He continues to enjoy outdoor activities, coaching, watching Badger games and serving as a lector at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church.

DAVID J. BRAUN ’98 EAA Athletic Hall of Fame As a three-sport, nineletter athlete, David has an outstanding record of performance on the football field, the basketball court and the track. As a football player at Edgewood, he earned All-City and AllConference First Team honors in 1996 and 1997 as a wide receiver and defensive back.

He also landed a position on the AP All-State Second Team in 1997 as a wide receiver and was named the All-Area Large Schools Player of the Year. In his senior year he was the choice for Back of the Year by the WFCA and was selected to play in the 1998 Annual Shrine All Star Football Bowl Game. Over his career, David earned more than 1,000 yards in 80 receptions with just 11 interceptions and also picked up 700 yards returning the ball. He took the ball into the end zone for 17 touchdowns. Equally impressive on the basketball court, David was a First Team pick for All-City in 1997 and 1998, All-Area and All-State Fourth Team in 1998, and was a WBCA All Star Game selection. With more than 1,000 career points, he also made it into the Wisconsin State Journal’s Top 20 leading scorers. He was chosen All-State, Fourth Team in his senior year. As a runner, David was a member of two relay teams that set school records in the 4x400 meter and the 4x800 meter. David joined the UW Badger football squad and proved his ability to perform in the classroom as well as on the field by earning Academic All-Big Ten recognition in both 1999 and 2001 and as the recipient of the John Jardine Memorial Scholarship in 2000, 2001 and 2002. He had

the added distinction of being named UW Offensive Player of the Game in the September 2002 match-up versus Northern.

After graduating from UW, David progressed through a series of banking positions and is currently a senior vice president for FirstMerit Bank in Madison. David participates in marathons, half-Ironman triathlons, the Crazylegs Run (consistently finishing in the Top 25), was a Boston Marathon qualifier in 2010, and a Wisconsin Ironman finisher in 2011 and 2012.

GARY THORNTON EAA Athletic Hall of Fame Few coaches in Edgewood history can match Gary Thornton’s record of longevity and dedication to his athletes.

In addition to his career as a physical education teacher at St. James School in Madison since 1974, Gary has been a coach of track and cross country teams for nearly four decades.

He began coaching the EHS Boys Track team in 1981. Two years later, he also took on the Girls Track and Cross Country teams, which he still coaches, though he has not coached the boys since 2008. In the years Edgewood competed in WISAA Division 1, 1983–2000, girls won 40 individual championships in track and cross country. Among his notable runners were previous EAA Hall of Famers Molly McClimon Watcke ’89 and Lisa Junck MacDonald ’91, both of whom were named Wisconsin Female Track Athlete of the Year

by Gatorade Circle of Champions/Scholastic Coach Magazine. The Edgewood girls have been represented in every State Track Meet since joining the WIAA and sent individuals to the State Cross Country meet in 2004 and 2005, with entire teams attending in the years 2010 through 2013. In total, the girls have earned seven Division 2 State individual titles and one State relay team championship since joining the WIAA. In 1998, the Wisconsin Track Coaches Association named Gary District 8 Coach of the Year. The Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association recognized him for leadership of Conference Championship awards in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014. The WCCCA also named Gary Division 2 Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2013 after his runners earned Conference, Sectional and State Champion titles. The Madison Sports Hall of Fame has twice cited Gary and his teams for Special Achievement: for the 2002 Girls Track State Team Championship and the 2013 Girls Cross Country State Team Championship.

1990-1991 EDGEWOOD VARSITY BOYS HOCKEY WISAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM EAA Athletic Hall of Fame There was promise in the air as the Boys Hockey season started in Fall 1990. The solid core of eight senior skaters who headed the team had played on WISAA Championship teams of the three previous years and were hungry for an unprecedented fourth consecutive title. They were backed by a strong squad of ten juniors with eleven sophomores with three freshmen ready to move into the ranks.

The Crusader force was led by coaches Ken Keryluk and Steve Rothering. Hopes and confidence continued to grow as the Crusaders repeatedly and decisively vanquished opponents by margins of five or more goals. The team’s only loss in a 27-1 season came late in regular season competition when Middleton skated off the ice with the win in a 3-2 heartbreaker. There were plenty of other highlights to celebrate however, including double defeats of Madison

West and a pair of wins over Sun Prairie, one of which earned the Crusaders the Blue Line Championship. In the Midwest Tournament, the Crusaders continued their conquests, narrowly taking down Marist High School of Chicago in a 6-5 nail biter and then fending off another Illinois opponent, Mt. Carmel High School, 2-0 to capture the tournament title. They also brought back the title of IHSHL Champions. At the WISAA State Tournament, the Crusaders reasserted their authority and left Marquette out in the cold by turning in a definitive 5-2 win to take the Championship for the fourth time in as many years. Goal achieved, and then some. That wasn’t the end of the glory, though. The 1991 Crusaders were named Wisconsin’s top-ranked high school team and then shot into the National Sports News Service national rankings at the #4 position, the only Wisconsin team to make the Top 20. Of the team’s members, 11 went on to play college hockey, including three of them at Division 1 schools. It was a memorable season capped with distinguished recognition, and a true moment of pride for all in the Edgewood High School community.

Play Day on the Turf!

On October 18, EHS families and neighbors took advantage of an invitation to visit the recently completed Irwin and Robert Goodman Athletic Complex. They took pictures, ran around on the astroturf and gave the track a try.

The high-tech surfaces are unique among area schools and the boys’ junior varsity football and soccer teams were among the first to use the field for competition, while a range of teams will use the facility for practice. Still in the works are final surfacing of the track and additional landscaping.

Archives at the Sinsinawa Mound: History Comes to Life

in support of Edgewood High School and the fine arts The annual Trivia Night in November was an evening of silly costumes, plenty of food and drink, and great brainteasing questions. This year featured a live music round by EHS teacher/pianist Hikari Maekawa and a rotating panel of emcees: Katrina Brunner, Serina Jolivette, Pamela Hanson-Stewart, Carrie Backman, Diane Mertens and Dennis McKinley, with Mark Thering taking photographs throughout the night.

New competitive bidding was added, and all in all, guests had a great time and are revving up to return next fall. Join them! Check the EHS website calendar this summer for the finalized date in early November.

Why do the Archives at The Mound exist in the first place?

Father Samuel Mazzuchelli wrote a Dominican Rule for the newly emerging Sinsinawa Sisters in 1860 in which he stated that “the Practice of recording in a book the Acts of a Religious Community concerning its own members has wisely been established by our Order [of Preachers].”

We have detailed records kept by Father Samuel in his hand dating back to 1827: correspondence, account books, sermon diaries, sacramental records. The Sisters have kept annals of each convent since 1847 that detail the life and work of the mission. The Archives contain an almost unbounded series of stories told by eye-witnesses. The fun is in discovering and linking the details found in these stories, giving life and color to an event from years past. Often, in searching for one thing, another pops up which might have initially seemed unrelated.

What are some of the more important items in the collection?

Much of Father Samuel Mazzuchelli’s papers and records are contained in the Archives. This material was very important in the writing of the Positio, the document required which “posited” the reasons why he should be considered for sainthood within the Catholic Church. This was accomplished in 1993. Without these records, the case would have been much more difficult to establish.

Of course, there is an exhibit for Father Mazzuchelli, which is open to the public. It includes some of his personal items as well as scientific instruments used in the 1850s to teach the girls. These instruments came from New York and predated the use of similar

equipment by instructors at the University of Wisconsin.

Documents originating in 1864 related to St. Clara Academy students, Academy account books, catalogs and the The Young Eagle publications provide rich, informative historical sources and photographs for the relatives of these students. Our database, which outlines studies and degrees of each sister in the Congregation, is an amazing and powerful document in itself, based on the accumulated files of professed sisters.

We also have a valuable resource collection of books on the Tri-State area. Many of these volumes are out of print and unavailable, yet provide marvelous information regarding the three states well before statehood. The Archives houses the complete collection of the Catholic Directory, first published in 1822 and issued every year since, except one year during the Civil War. The Directory is a listing of each and every church in every diocese, school, hospital, etc. across the United States.

Paintings, sculptures, weavings, graphics and music compositions of our sister-artists are also displayed. They are crowned by the beautiful Queen of the Rosary chapel, with windows created by Sister Teresita Kelly OP, who taught at Edgewood and created the St. Joseph mural in the College’s chapel.

Who is allowed access to the Archives?

The Sinsinawa Dominican Archives is a private collection. This means the materials are not open and accessible to the public as you might expect at the National Archives, but requests are accepted. Frequently sought

items include photographs, mission histories of sisters, obituaries and gravesite locations, all of which are routinely available. Genealogy information in the individual files of deceased sisters can be provided upon request and is a rich source for families. Each request for information received in the Archives is evaluated and answered as fully as we can or think appropriate. Confidential materials like medical records, educational records, personal correspondence, etc., are not available.

What kinds of requests are made?

Questions regarding the Sinsinawa Post Office (established in 1835 and continuously operating) are very interesting. Requests for sacramental records, which often contain family members “lost” to families yet listed as sponsors or witnesses, are also interesting.

Not unique, but very satisfying: the son of a woman celebrating her 94th birthday called asking if there was any information about his mother when she was a student at St. Clara Academy. His mother never spoke about her experience at the Academy beyond “happy” and “nice.” She had nothing with which to remember her time at the Academy. I located good material and photos of his mother, as well as articles she wrote for The Young Eagle, her grade cards indicating the classes she had taken, and pages from the account books. I scanned the material and sent it on a CD to the son. Christmas Eve afternoon I received a call from him with his mother. He had put the material together into a book for her.

Both were teary about the memories and the conversations elicited by the materials. So happy. I heard again from the son saying his mom had died in January, but had been so delighted with what she received from the Archives.

Philip C. Jordan has moved recently to an independent retirement home in Yorktown, Virginia, where he volunteers at a local food pantry. Before his retirement, Philip worked for Hankscraft/Gerber Products in Reedsburg, Wisconsin.

1957 William J. Arthur is a very active volunteer in his retirement. The Wisconsin State Journal ran a profile of him in their “Know Your Madisonian” column. In addition to continuing to pursue an interest in nature photography he first discovered while attending UW-Madison, he regularly takes photos of events at the Arboretum.

Bill volunteers almost daily at one of many different service agencies and is also the president of the board of Community Services Center Inc., a collaboration of four local organizations. For more and a link to the full story, visit ehsedgewise.blogspot.com!

James F. Flad is a retired wild life photographer.

For the last 12 years he has been the Madison Branch Coordinator and USA Region Coordinator for the Catholic Apostolate for Pro Labore Dei, a non-profit organization with a goal of bringing God’s love and kindness to the poor. Since September 2003 the group has served a weekly Friday meal in downtown Madison to the homeless at Holy Redeemer Church, but the program is in need of a new permanent home.

1966 Timothy C. Sweeney recently celebrated 40 years as an attorney in Madison. In October 2015, he left a long-time position with Sweeney Buye SC and now works for Neider & Boucher SC, continuing to practice in the areas of business, finance, real estate, estate planning and probate.

1982 Edward W. Kinney, senior vice president for commercial lending at Settlers bank, has worked in banking for 31 years. He was one of three Settlers Bank officers honored by the Wisconsin Bankers Association during its Lifetime of Service to the Industry recognition ceremony held in September 2015.

1985 Michael P. O’Malley (center) is among those who are now working with UW Health patients recovering from strokes and other brain injuries and in need of rebuilding their lives as they relearn daily tasks and regain cognitive and neuromotor functions. Michael J. Boberschmidt ’66 and William J. “Willie” Kolb ’66 visited Argentina together, including stops at Perito Moreno and the Upsala glaciers. They have been friends since first grade at Blessed Sacrament and, as Willie said, are “still upright and above the grass. Life can often be very good.”

1977 Tekla Wlodarczyk Núñez started Mother Earth Cleaners in 2009. The eco-friendly green company which offers business and home cleaning services, won an Angie’s List “Super Service Award” in 2014 and a “Best of Madison” award in 2015. See Marriages.

Kevin P. Farley served as an executive producer on a documentary film about the life of his brother, Christopher C. Farley ’82. Created as part of the “I Am …” series that airs on Spike TV, the film incorporated home movie clips, interviews with family members, including Thomas J. Farley, Jr. ’80, and some of the actors who knew Chris.

John J. Sweeney and Elena Imaretska have written a new book, The Innovative Mindset, available at wiley.com. They are members of the Creative Outreach Team at Brave New Workshop Comedy Theatre in Minneapolis. John and his wife, Jenni, live in Wayzata, Minnesota.

1959 Katherine T. “Kitty” Sprague Geier “retired” after 50 years of working as a nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison. As a December 3, 2015, Wisconsin State Journal “Know Your Madisonian” profile made clear, though, she didn’t leave her patients behind.

Kitty continues to share her compassionate care with people as a volunteer who greets and escorts people to their treatments. In addition, she participates in a range of other services, sometimes sitting with dying patients as part of the hospital’s No One Dies Alone program, a welcome presence, especially when family members are not immediately available.

husband, Craig, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this year. They reside in Lodi, Wisconsin, where Craig is enjoying his retirement from American Family Insurance. They spend their free time with good friends and their two dogs, Casey and Bella.

Patrick T. Berigan and his wife, Anita, are living in Muskego, Wisconsin, with their two daughters, Tierney and Hilary. Pat is a senior attorney in the Social Security Administration Office of Disability Adjudication and Review and is also a part-time municipal judge. He is a member of the Pastoral Council at St. Leonard Catholic Church, is a choir member and also serves as cantor. He’s also a member of the Muskego Kickers Soccer Club and serves as a State Board member and local coach for Odyssey of the Mind.

Susan M. Weber Caldwell has accepted a position as general counsel of Madison National Life. Susan also volunteers her time as a DECA judge and high school mock trial tournament judge. She and her

Chad F. MacKenzie is employed by Brewster Village in Outagamie County, Wisconsin, as the director of nursing services. He earned a BS in nursing from Edgewood College and a certificate in health care administration at UW-Eau Claire.

Chad and his wife, Debra, live in Oshkosh with their children: Hannah, Jensen, Ellie and Fisher.

Karen L. Guelzow Meyer, MEd has recently accepted a full time position as an instructor at Arizona State University in Tempe. She is the iTeach AZ Site Coordinator for the Mesa School District. ASU is the only college in the state and the first in the nation to offer this program which partners with school districts to mentor new teachers and provide them with proven teaching skills. She is married to Jeffrey J. Meyer ’85, who heads up Business Development at SiteWorks LLC, an Arizona company that specializes in large landscape projects, some of which include several Major League ball parks. Karen and Jeff live in Chandler and have two children, Ben and Ellie.

Kathleen E. Burgess moved back to Madison after living elsewhere for 25 years. Kate is now a registered agent and executive producer for Capital Productions, LLC. Anthony W. Zabit co-founded IXC Holdings, Inc. (formerly Telekenex Inc.) in 1994 and serves as its president and COO. He has more than a decade of experience in the telecommunications industry.

Anthony also serves as a Director for the California Association of Competitive Telecommuncations Companies and Telekenex,, Inc. He graduated from Indiana University School of Business and lives in Mill Valley, California.

1990 Dana N. MacKenzie lives in Madison where he works in sales for LIDS Team Sports as a grassroots and tournament specialist. He is also owner and director of Wisconsin Swing Basketball, which helps young athletes gain skills and experience in the sport.

Peter B. Walton II, lives in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, with his wife, Ellen, and their children: Brooke, Brianna and Brittany. Peter has worked for American Family Insurance for 19 years, and is active in Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce, and a number of other volunteer activities, including being a youth sports coach and a 4-H youth leader. He is especially proud of having advanced to the Basketball Final Four in his senior year.

Laura M. Varriale was a competitor on Jeopardy! on September 25, 2015.

A UW-Madison alumna with a degree in business administration followed by a law degree from the University of Minnesota and an MBA from the same institution, she has held a variety of corporate and civic titles. She lives in Madison and since 2013 has been legal counsel at Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and also volunteers at Overture Center for the Arts.

Christopher T. Tierney has been a volunteer for the Merrill Lynch Grand Gala which has raised nearly $4 million in nine years for local non-profit organizations. Chris and his family live in Verona, Wisconsin.

1997 Nicole A. Weimert-Pilch, PharmD, MSCR, BCPS is one of two pediatric/adult abdominal organ transplant clinical specialists at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). She is also an associate member of the faculty in the MUSC College of Graduate Studies and is a clinical assistant professor with the South Carolina College of Pharmacy–MUSC Campus. She earned her PharmD in 2003 at the UW-Madison and, following residencies, completed a fellowship in transplant clinical research and an MS at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Weimert-Pilch has previously lectured on various topics related to transplantation and its associated pharmacotherapy at the local, state and national levels, as well as authoring several textbook chapters, abstracts and articles in peer-reviewed journals. She currently serves on the advisory board of Specialty Pharma Journal.

2005 Sophia M. Minnaert, a Fox Sports Wisconsin sideline reporter for the Milwaukee Brewers and Milwaukee Bucks, received an extensive profile in the Madison Catholic Herald newspaper, where she was an intern in 2005 and 2006. Sophia earned degrees in journalism, literature and Spanish from Marquette in 2009 and has been working in sports journalism since then, covering live-streamed events, working in social media, doing feature stories on athletes and teams, and now appearing as an on screen reporter.

2006 Robert D. Arnold received a BA in communication arts and theatre from UWMadison in 2010. In addition to a full time job at InnerWorkings, a marketing/branding/printing company, he is a freelance actor, director and producer. He manages and assists the operation of two Chicago theatre companies.

Nolan D. Berry lives in San Antonio, Texas, where he is employed by Rackspace Hosting as tactical network operation engineer/Unix systems engineer.

Thomas R. Boyd earned a BA at UW-Madison in 2010 and a JD at Pepperdine University in 2013. He lives in Chicago, Illinois, where he practices law with the Knell O’Connor Danielewicz firm.

As a volunteer, he tutors 7th and 8th graders in math and social studies, and coaches youth basketball for the YMCA of Cook County. In recalling his days at EHS, he said, “Liturgy Wednesdays really exemplified the EHS experience—a community of learning and faith that deserves to be celebrated and appreciated.”

Kelsey A. Donald Cacic is a second lieutenant in the USAF Medical Corps. She will receive an MD from Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2016.

Allison R. Sara lives in Muscatine, Iowa, where she is the owner of Muscatine Yoga Studio, LLC, and is the manager of the local Anytime Fitness workout facility. Before qualifying as a registered yoga instructor and wellness coach, Allison studied journalism and mass communication at the University of Iowa and also pursued studies in equestrian sciences.

Molly M. Sehloff is a certified veterinary technician with an associate’s degree in the field from Globe University. She lives in Madison and works at Lakeview Veterinary Clinic.

Elizabeth A. Seramur received a BS in medical microbiology from UW-La Crosse and is currently a student at Viterbo College. She is in her fifth year of competing in triathlons, and she volunteers her time serving at the Cheyenne River Youth Project for Lakota children and teens on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota.

Elisabeth H. Sobic earned a BA from Marquette University in 2010 and will receive a JD from there as well in May 2016. Libby says her favorite experience at EHS was going to St. Croix with Joe Zaiman, a science teacher who died in 2004. “He was an incredible mentor, teacher and friend.”

Mariama Martin Morrison has been married to Andrew Martin since June18, 2011. She graduated from UW-Madison and is now working as an industrial engineer at Extreme Engineering Solutions in Middleton, Wisconsin.

2009 Joseph P. Curtin and his business, Bust A Move, received a feature profile in the Wisconsin State Journal.

The company, one part of Chromatic Media Group, provides video feeds of guests at events as they ham it up in front of the camera and then sets the recorded video to music and provides it to the party hosts as a memento of the wedding reception, retirement party or other special occasion. Emma R. DallaGrana earned her BS in supply management from the University of Dayton in 2013. She now lives in Austin, Texas, where she is a supply chain analyst for 3M Corporation.

Alan J. Dellinger is a staff writer for The Daily Dot, an online newspaper that publishes about 50 articles a day covering Internet topics and eSports.

He lives in Madison.

18 • Edgewood High School of the Sacred Heart Carlton R. Dewey is living in Denver, Colorado, where he is employed as a civil engineer for Kraemer North America, LLC. Carl received his degree in civil engineering from the University of Colorado in Boulder in 2013.

Joseph L. Docter is senior accountant for 4C Insights, Inc., in Madison. His BBA in accounting and entrepreneurship is from UW-Madison.

Thomas S. D. Holaday is a mechanical engineer at the GE Jet Engine Plant in Cincinnati, Ohio, where his wife, Laura M. Lang Holaday is a chemical engineer at Kao Products (formerly Jergens). See Marriages.

Katherine S. Jones completed a BS in biology at UW-Madison in 2012 and is now enrolled in the naturopathic doctorate program at the National College of Natural Medicine. She will receive her degree in June 2016.

Bradley M. Keegan earned two degrees while at Wake Forest University: a BS in chemistry in 2013 followed by an MS in biomedical sciences in 2015.

He lives in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he is a co-founder and chief science officer for EncepHeal Therapeutics, Inc. Nathaniel J. Maas graduated from the University of Dayton in 2014 with a BS in electrical engineering. Nate lives in Canton, Ohio, where he works for TimkenSteel Corporation as a steel business associate. He was accepted into the electrical engineering program at Purdue Graduate School in October 2015.

Laura E. Wacek lives in Centennial, Colorado, and is working as the marketing director for Ricca Design Studios, a restaurant interior architecture company that has projects nationwide and globally.

Their services include everything from designing kitchens for efficiency, to creating dining areas that are comfortable and appealing, to logistics of procurement and disposal, offices and even laundry facilities.

Leisa M. Zimbrick recently accepted a position as human resources coordinator for Protiviti Inc, a greater Chicago-based global consulting firm that helps companies solve problems in finance, technology, operations, governance, risk and internal audit. Leisa received her degree from Boston College and previously worked with the Hanover Insurance Group in Massachusetts.

2010 Austin M. Douse is in Brooklyn, New York, living “one-step-above-struggling musician” with his freelance work producing music, playing sessions, and selling some of his compositions.

His recently-formed production company, Good English Recordings (find it on Facebook), is putting out its second record for indie rock group Trochee Trochee, while his own band, Dia Delos, is working on its first extended play release. Additionally, he’s attracted some interest in his music from network television and is pursuing a writing/ publishing deal with a label in New York.

Basil E. Morrison received his BS in computer science and economics from UW-Madison in May 2015. He is employed by Thomson Reuters as a

software test engineer in Eagan, Minnesota, where he now resides.

2011 Scarlet S. Nelson had her film The Grind and her collaborative film entitled The Riddle Monster accepted for the 2015 Montreal Stop Motion Film Festival held in September. After graduating from the Savannah College of Art & Design, Scarlet is now working as an assistant animator at Bix Pix Entertainment in Los Angeles, an animation studio that creates primarily stopmotion projects for television and film. 2012 Austin A. Arians was featured in a sports section lead story for the Wisconsin State Journal. Austin, who is on the UW-Milwaukee men’s Panthers basketball team, sustained a severe high ankle sprain about two weeks before the start of the regular season a year ago and ended up taking a redshirt. This year, however, the junior forward is a commanding presence on the court. (He also participated in the EHS Basketball Alumni games—a definite unfair advantage for the team he played on!). 2014 Evan V. Bondoc is attending UW-Madison where he is a member of Badgers Football Team as a defensive back playing safety. He was named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team for the 2015 season.

Thomas J. Hellenbrand is studying at the University of Chicago and had the chance to meet with Dean John Boyer, author and dean of the college for more than two decades, at book signing at the campus Barnes & Noble (Boyer’s book is The University of Chicago: A History).

Margaret J. Korb, a former EHS Crusader Singers performer, successfully auditioned to be a member of the University of Alabama Resonance Choir, the university’s “show choir.”

2015 Tess E. Hackworthy was selected as a scholarship recipient of the Lou Warobick Junior Golf Foundation for 2015. Tess currently attends UWMadison and is a member of the Women’s Golf Team.

She also took fourth place at the 2015 Wisconsin Women’s State Golf Association Amateur Championship held in July.

Gwendolyn F. Q. Miller auditioned for and was accepted into the Concert Choir at the University of St. Thomas.

“Gap year” full of life experiences Maximillian L. Wolnak ’15 decided that he didn’t want to head directly to college and instead, with assistance from the EHS Student Services Office, planned a year of fulfilling, experiential learning activities.

In a letter to Nick Burrows, Max shared, “I’m already done with my first program of doing martial arts and studying Mandarin study in China, and I learned so much [including] independence and improving my work habits. When my parents visited me, we went to Henan, in central China, where we were treated like celebrities [and] even got to see Zhang Shi Fu, the program’s head martial arts master, and the quite impressive temple he’s building. It has been hard work, but also a journey to improve many skills, and I already feel so much more prepared for college. I highly recommend the Academic Explorers program to anyone interested in learning Mandarin, Kung Fu and what ever else you might come across.

I had a nice Christmas break between programs: I got to sleep in my own bed and eat American food again, but also did some work trying to look for colleges that fit my interests and have submitted an application to Loras. Right now I’m in Costa Rica learning Spanish in my second program, and this weekend I’m going to a beach to do some surfing and soccer. Jose, the director of this program, is super nice and funny, and he takes very good care of his students and their needs. I’m living with a great host family; lots of humor and though I can’t yet understand all they say, they're a very nice and entertaining bunch. I would very much appreciate it if you would let me ask the colleges to contact you to provide a reference for me once again.

Thank you so much again for everything you've done in helping me plan my year! I definitely would like to come back to Edgewood to share my experience with you as well as other teachers and students.”

FORMER FACULTY & STAFF Sr. Miguel Hearty, OP died on August 7, 2015, at the age of 100. In 1933 she began a lifelong ministry as an educator, including many years on the Edgewood campus. She served as prioress of the Sacred Heart Convent, 1962–1970, was principal at Edgewood Campus School and taught at both Edgewood High School and College.

Sr. Milla Derby, OP died on September 26, 2015, in her home city of Honolulu, Hawaii, where she was an artist-in-residence. Sr. Milla taught art at EHS, 1961–1963.

Michelle C. Hird ’07married Benjamin T. Kohn at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Madison on June 27, 2015. Edgewood was well represented at the wedding, starting with the parents of the bride, Stephen C. Hird ’77 and his wife, Susan.

Stephanie M. Hird ’05 was her sister’s maid of honor and Scott C. Hird ’10 was a groomsman.

Bridesmaids also included lifelong friends Courtney E. McKenna ’07 and Cathryn C. Hall ’07. Michelle and Ben live in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where both are working at Target Headquarters.

Adam J. Kachelski ’07 married Monica Cooley on July 25, 2015 in Mequon, Wisconsin. The couple now resides in Cincinnati, Ohio, where Adam is an attorney with Hoglund, Chwialkowski & Mrozik law firm and she is a student at the University of Cincinnati Medical School.

Kristi A. Ley ’98 married John Longo at St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Mazomanie, Wisconsin. The couple currently lives in Yangon, Myanmar.

Daniel J. Sarbacker ’97 married Lindsay Kruger at the Chippewa Retreat Resort in Monitowish Waters, Wisconsin, on October 10, 2015. Dan’s sister, Jennifer Sarbacker Stiklestad ’00, was one of the bridesmaids and his longtime friend, Wendy L. Neumann Meister ’97, was also a member of the wedding party.

BIRTHS Geralyn A. Daniels DeSalvo ’06 and her husband, Eric, have a son, Vincent David, born on July 29, 2014, the same day of the year as his uncle, Kevin C. Daniels ’14. Vincent is the first grandchild for Jerrald M. ’79 and Rosemary Alderson ’79 Daniels. The DeSalvo family lives in Jacksonville, Florida.

Seen recently Ugly sweaters (and even pajamas) decorated the hallways in advance of Christmas. This year also saw the beginning of a new tradition as a Christmas tree was placed in the circle at the top of the driveway, and a tree lighting was held in conjunction with the evening Christmas concert.
