How-To Talk Cannabis With Your Parents & Grandparents Instead of the birds and the bees, we're talking CBD & trees…

As cannabis is no longer condemned to the shadows, more and more people are beginning to understand the true medical benefits it possesses. However, the stigma of “reefer madness” still remains in the minds of baby boomers. The younger generations are much more open to using cannabis and are now wondering how to get their parents and grandparents on board. Below we have offered up some helpful tips to bring up the cannabis conversation with your family.

Step 1: Choose an appropriate situation to bring it up Before just blurting out statements about cannabis in a family situation, gauge how they feel about cannabis. If you have never had the discussion begin by asking about their feelings or experiences with cannabis. You might be surprised by their opinions or stories! If they are against the idea then this will help to decide how to approach it with them.

Step 2: Know the facts and be receptive to what they have to say Though we live in a society where information about cannabis is readily available, this has not always 8

WWW.EDIBLESMAGAZINE.COM | ISSUE NO. 24

been the case. Previously there has been so much misinformation released surrounding the plant that older generations have been forcefed throughout their entire lives.

Step 4: Introduce them to cannabis infused topicals

Instead of trying to make them understand your point of view, try to understand theirs. If they are against the idea of the use of cannabis listen to their perspective and then hit them with the facts. No matter what the response from your family surrounding cannabis, the one thing that cannot be argued is the truth. Explain the history behind cannabis prohibition and the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937. Show them the trials done prior to that, and explain the true benefits of hemp and cannabis. DO YOUR RESEARCH, and demystify the fallacies.

The easiest way to bring someone into cannabis is through the use of topicals. Since everyone experiences pain as they get older, offer your family members cannabis infused topicals. There are balms, salves, lotions, patches, you name it there is something on the market that can help everyone. If your family is not comfortable with THC infused lotions, even after explaining that topicals do not get you ‘high’ - you may want to try a CBD topical instead. This will still provide the desired healing effects.

Step 3: Explain everything. Explain the differences between Medical MJ and Adult Use Explain what the endocannabinoid sytem is and how cannabinoids interact with your body. Explain the differences between THC and all other medicinal properties that cannabis possesses. Explain that you can indeed use cannabis without getting high. Explain the natural medicinal benefits the plant possesses. Show them success stories. Explain how cannabis has bettered your life.

Step 5: Keep them informed and make it personal The cannabis conversation will not likely be one conversation. It may be a process to get them to come around to the idea. Make sure you keep them informed. Send them information about how marijuana helps specific ailments that may afflict them and others they know, and try to send articles from reputable sources like the National Institute of Health. Show them the irrefutable proof, make it easy for them to relate and keep the channels of communication open. Be there to answer questions and never make them feel silly about asking questions. Good luck!

MEDICAL MARIJUANA & PALLIATIVE CARE IN HOSPICE

Currently, cannabis is often turned to only when all other traditional options have failed to work. Many times it is too late to actually help turn things around for the patient; it does give way to a much higher quality of life. Many people feel that in states where medical marijuana is legal, it should be used in place of harmful pharmaceuticals to comfort dying patients. In fact, Namaste Hospice in Colorado offers their patients, with qualifying medical symptoms, cannabis free of charge. In 2014, the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) issued an official statement on the use of medical marijuana. After citing the support of medical marijuana

HPNA urges hospice and palliative nurses to be informed about what illnesses cannabis is actually known to benefit. Additionally, they insist that nurses must inform patients and their families about cannabis and its effects, as well as synthetic versions as a secondary option. HPNA calls for nurses to strictly abide by their state’s cannabis laws. Hospice and palliative nurses may not prescribe

baked bros

cannabis and can only administer it under the guidance of a doctor. HPNA supports the American College of Physicians, American Medical Association, and the Institute of Medicine in calling for the creation of a research grade of cannabis to allow further research on the evaluation of the therapeutic effects of marijuana. Medical marijuana is an antiinflammatory, initiates key CB2 receptors in the epidermis of a patient's skin, produces the effects of an appetite stimulant and overall can relax these patients. If there is anyone who would benefit from this alternative treatment option, it would be the hospice patients.

CANNABIS AND ITS ANTI-AGING

PROPERTIES

Though hemp has been used in cosmetics for ages, more and more companies are integrating THC (delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol) into their skincare lines. The Federation of American Societies of Experimental Biology found that cannabinoids are responsible for lipid production and, therefore, for regulating conditions such as dry skin or acne. "Our preclinical data encourage one to explore whether endocannabinoid systemacting agents can be exploited in the management of common skin disorders," said Tam谩s Bir贸, a scientist on the team. In addition to being an anti-inflammatory, cannabis has been more recently noted as an antioxidant. Some studies have shown that THC itself possesses more anti-aging qualities than cannabidiol. The antioxidants assist in neutralizing the damaging effects of free radical oxygen particles. The balance between detrimental and defensive biological processes, such as oxidative stress and anti-oxidation, determines the ageing process. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that the endocannabinoid system (ECS) has a fundamental role to play in various aspects of the aging process, both mental and somatic. On a cellular level, the ECS regulates expression of the important neurotransmitter, brain-derived neurotropic factor, an important protein responsible for the development and maintenance of healthy neurons, which underlies its ability to assist in neurogenesis (growth of new neurons). It is now known that the endocannabinoid system is involved in the maintenance of healthy skin in various ways. Cannabis topicals may also be used to treat inflammatory skin diseases. Dermatologists note that smoking cannabis is not the healthiest form of consumption for your skin. If you are a cannabis user, oral consumption is the best method for protecting your skin. Smoking cannabis has the same effects on skin as smoking cigarettes would. Doctors urge that if you insist in smoking you have a heavy-duty moisturizer on, but if you insist on smoking, use a vaporizer. 17

California Will Likely See Recreational Weed on Nov. Ballot: What AUMA means for CA Cannabis It has been officially announced that the Adult Use of Marijuana Act (AUMA) successfully collected more than 600,000 signatures, more than enough to qualify for the Nov. 8 ballot. Now that it seems AUMA is going to be the initiative Californians vote on, we felt it was important to help the public understand truly what AUMA is all about. Please see below for the main points of AUMA and make your own informed decision about whether or not this would be what the best for California's marijuana programs. PURPOSE OF AUMA The Adult Use of Marijuana Act sets up a comprehensive system governing marijuana businesses at the state level and safeguards local control, allowing local governments to regulate marijuana-related activities, to subject marijuana businesses to zoning and requirements, and to ban marijuana businesses by a vote of the people within a locality. The Adult Use of Marijuana Act will create strict environmental regulations to ensure that the marijuana is grown efficiently and legally, to regulate the use of pesticides, to prevent wasting water, and to minimize water usage. The Adult Use of Marijuana Act creates a comprehensive regulatory structure in which every marijuana business is overseen by a specialized agency with relevant expertise. The Bureau of Marijuana Control, housed in the Department of Consumer Affairs, will oversee the whole system and ensure a smooth transition to the legal market, with licenses issued beginning in 2018. MARIJUANA TAXES - AUMA will tax at both the cultivation and retail levels - As of Jan. 1, 2018 a 15% excise tax will be applied to all non-medical cannabis sales - The CA sales tax of 7.5% will also be applied - A cultivation tax will also be applied - $9.25 per ounce for flower and $2.75 per ounce for cannabis leaves - Individual counties may establish their own taxes on marijuana - Changes in tax rates due to inflation would happen as of 2020 ESTABLISHING A REGULATION ADMINISTRATION - The Department of Consumer Affairs will license and oversee marijuana retailers, distributors, and microbusinesses - The Department of Food and Agriculture will license and oversee marijuana cultivation, ensuring it is environmentally safe - The Department of Public Health will license and oversee manufacturing and testing, ensuring consumers receive a safe product - The State Board of Equalization will collect the special marijuana taxes, and the Controller will allocate the revenue to administer the new law and provide the funds to critical investments - A track and trace system will expand into seed to sale tracking ANTI-MONOPOLY PROVISIONS - The Adult Use of Marijuana Act ensures the nonmedical marijuana industry in California will be built around small and medium sized businesses by prohibiting large-scale cultivation licenses for the first five years PACKAGING - This requires that non-medical marijuana sold by licensed businesses must be packaged in child-resistant containers and be labeled so that consumers are fully informed about potency and 20

And it mandates that marijuana and marijuana products cannot be advertised or marketed towards children - All infused products must be scored out to 10 milligrams per serving pieces - Infused products may not resemble mainstream items that would lead to confusion LICENSING/LICENSEES - This Act will require licensed non-medical marijuana businesses to follow strict environmental and product safety standards as a condition of maintaining their license - It prohibits the sale of non-medical marijuana by businesses that also sell alcohol or tobacco - This strictly prohibits extracting without a license - Licenses will begin being issued by Jan. 1, 2018 - The existing medical marijuana operators in compliance with the Compassionate Use Act of 1996, will get priority in commercial licensing until 2020 - Felonies exclude you from obtaining a license – convictions from drug cases that were based on something that is now legal will not solely exclude someone - Licensing fees will be set up on a scaled basis depending on the size of the business and variable costs - The State Water Resources Control Board and the Department of Fish and Wildlife - among other agencies - will be allowed to establish fees to cover the cost of their marijuana regulatory programs - There are 12 different license categories – a total of 19 classes of licenses will be offered - Licenses must be renewed annually - Non-medical licenses are separate of MedMJ - Licensees may hold several licenses with the exception of testing facilities – licensees with a testing facility may not have interest in any other class of license - All licensees must be located at least 600 ft from a school - Licensees must be California residents as of Jan. 1, 2015 – this requirement ends Dec. 31, 2019 ADVERTISING/MARKETING - This Act prohibits the marketing and advertising of non-medical marijuana to persons younger than 21 years old or near schools or other places where children are present - All advertising shall accurately identify the licensee - Licensees may only advertise in outlets that targets at least 71.6% people over age of 21 - Web ads will require age verification - No misleading information or scientific claims that cannot be proven - No advertising on billboards on highways that cross state lines - No cartoon characters - No advertising within 1000 ft of where children play - There will be absolutely no giveaways of marijuana or infused products MEDICAL MARIJUANA PATIENTS - This Act will strengthen the state’s existing medical marijuana system by requiring patients to obtain by January 1, 2018, a new recommendation from their physician that meets the strict standards signed into law by the Governor in 2015, and by providing new privacy protections for patients who obtain medical marijuana identification cards as set forth in this Act - This will not supersede the Compassionate Use Act of 1996 - Child custody rights for MJMed patients are protected - All medical marijuana patients will need to apply

KUSH TACOS

Kush Tacos, a California company specializes in taco truck style infused tacos at cannabis events. They offer a new spin on savory cannabis infused foods that no one else is doing! They offer both chicken and carne asada street tacos made with corn tortillas. The part that is actually infused is the salsa, You can choose between red hot salsa and salsa verde. These tacos are as yummy as they come, and they give you a nice mild high that makes any cannabis event much more enjoyable and relaxing. Check out www.KushTacos.com or look for them at the next cannabis event you attend. If you are not going to a 420 event anytime soon you can even hire Kush Tacos to come cater your own private event!

In light of Cinco de Mayo, we found a south-of-the-border favorite that has been infused with cannabis, introducing the Dabchelada. Dabchelada is an infused version of a michelada. Armando Rodriguez, who actually once did marketing for one of the major michelada mix companies in LA, created Dabchelada.

DABCHELADA

When you buy a Dabchelada, you receive an empty Styrofoam cup wrapped in a brightly colored Dabchelada sticker, with the top dipped in medicated chili salt mix and covered in plastic. The instructions are simply placed on the front of the sticker “Just add your favorite beer or juice!” I decided to add a Tecate in light of it being a michelada. It was pretty delicious! Dabchelada is made using 200mg of indica dominant "real shatter" that you do not taste, but you can definitely feel it! They are potent and effective. I felt euphoric and happy after drinking it. Dabcheladas definitely add a kick to an otherwise boring beer or juice! You can use lemonade or different juices as well. Man, Dabchelada y’all know how to do it! Well done, this stuff is delicious!

UTOPIA FARMS

Utopia Farms is an award-winning cannabis company based in Santa Cruz, California. As stated on their packaging, Utopia specializes in ‘artisan flowers, refined extracts & nutritious edibles’ which are all pesticide free! Here at Edibles Magazine we were lucky enough to get to try one of each of the previously stated items. From Utopia Farms we received samples of the award-winning Chiquita Banana flower, Chiquita Banana concentrate, and raspberry and chocolate macaroons. First off, the flower is stunning. It is impeccably well-trimmed and dripping in crystals. The packaging is a simple glass jar with a very clean looking label. I very much appreciate the fact that they print their test results from SC Labs directly on the jar with a QR code that takes you to the actual results. The sativa dominant hybrid sure is effective, as it should be since hits approximately 30%! After one hit, I immediately felt a head change, yet still felt productive. This is 100% my kind of bud! It has a swift onset, and is long lasting but does not render you useless. I appreciate that I was able to be super productive after use. Now, the same cannot be said for the Chiquita Banana concentrate. Holy cheeseballs Utopia, this seriously knocked me on my you know what! Weighing in at close to 90% THC, this concentrate is one that is perfect for right before bed. I took three hits of out my Dabsolute Concentrate Pen and I was out. Within 20 minutes I was comatose for the rest of the evening. I just could not help myself the flavor is outstanding. Even the smell of it is tantalizing. P.S. They even put a batch number on the label, so if anything were to be awry with your concentrate they could track it back and fix the problem!

Lastly, I have to admit the packaging is on point for the macaroons. The opaque back is white with specific colored stripes -colors dependent on the flavor - on the top on bottom of the bag. They include all the pertinent information you would want on there and even let you know with icons on the front of the bag that they are gluten free, vegan, paleo and raw; they are even kosher! I love coconut, so I was super stoked that they were traditional macaroons. The bag contains 4 two-bite macaroons with 25mg THC each. The raspberry ones were my favorite, though I might be a little bias since chocolate is not really my thing - I know, don’t hate me! Upon first biting into it, there is an ever-so-slight taste of cannabis, but it fades as you eat it. The high is very clean and smooth, more like the flower than the concentrate. All in all, A+ Utopia Farms, A+! WWW.EDIBLESMAGAZINE.COM | ISSUE NO. 24

UNCLE RONNIE'S INC.

If you like jerky you will love Uncle Ronnie’s beef jerky!! Its founders paid tribute to their Uncle Ronnie by creating Uncle Ronnie’s Inc. Uncle Ronnie was a California native and Vietnam Vet that received a Purple Heart. He passed away in February 2011 and since then Uncle Ronnie’s Inc. has provided quality medicine to California patients. Uncle Ronnie’s Inc. offers a full product line including flowers, beef jerky, tinctures, pre-rolls and concentrates. Their Uncle Ronnie’s Reserve is a heavy OG and they pride themselves on the consistency of their genetics. The beef jerky comes in four flavors: Fuego (Fire) OG, Honey Pepper OG, Teriyaki OG and BBQ OG. Each bag contains 175mg of THC and uses 1.25 oz CO2 oil to infuse the jerky. The product comes in a gold pouch with a full window in the front. A large sticker covers the window with a fun drawing of Uncle Ronnie wearing a bucket hat and sunglasses at the beach, sporting a very fine white beard. The back of the packaging includes all of the nutrition facts, ingredients and legal disclaimers. The product itself is delicious! I really like the BBQ OG and Fuego OG together for a little sweet and spicy! You can definitely taste the oil, but the flavor of the jerky does a very good job of hiding them. The effects are swift and heavy. Unfortunately, the jerky is so good I could not stop myself from eating them. About a bag and a half, and 30 minutes later I was stoned. I would warn anyone who wants to try this that they do it when they do not have to worry about doing anything after, as it is a very heavy high. All in all, Uncle Ronnie’s really does the trick!

Habit was named Best New Drink 2016 by High Times and now we understand why! The premium carbonated beverages come in Strawberry, Kiwi, Lemon, Grape and Peach. Each soda comes in a 12 oz glass bottle with only 154 calories and 100mg THC. The company also makes elixirs in Strawberry, Peach, Raspberry and Grapefruit.

HABIT EDIBLES

My favorite flavor was the Sparkling Peach. They make it using real fruit and natural flavors with absolutely no high fructose corn syrup. The packaging is clean and frankly very pretty to look at. The flavoring is very well done and tasted just like a sparkling peach. I enjoy this because I really like carbonated drinks. There is a touch of cannabis flavor, but it does not overwhelm your senses. I also enjoyed the Kiwi flavor. It is refreshing and actually tastes like a kiwi. The other flavors are great as well. People ask us about Habit drinks all of the time and now we know why! If you have not tried one yet, we urge you test out these drinks from Vista, California. Cheers!

NECTAR STICK

The Nectar Stick line by Elevated Medibles is definitely one to watch if you are an extract company! Nectar Sticks are premium quality vape pens, cartridges, refills and disposables made with award-winning solvent free nectar. They offer multiple strains and we reviewed the King Tangie and Birthday Cake 600mg cartridges and the Nectar Stick Refill Dispenser, which contained 1.5g of premium grade Pineapple Nectar herbal extract. The King Tangie is absolutely delicious! It tastes just like Tangie and it made me a little giddy. Please note that Tangie is my favorite strain, so much so that I could not help but suck on it until I emptied it. There was no burn and it did not make me cough, all I could do was smile. That is the kind of high I enjoy. It was smooth and delicious; they really knocked it out of the park with this one. I would have to give this one a 10! The Birthday Cake cartridge was pretty good. However, there was a slight burn and the aftertaste of the actual oil that I was not so excited about, but the flavor was absolutely perfect. It really tasted like I was sucking on a birthday cake! They have absolutely got their flavor profiles down. This one I’d have to give an 8.0 because of the slight burn. The Pineapple Nectar smells just like a fresh pineapple! It absolutely does not have that gross artificial pineapple smell or taste. Instead it really does smell like the ripest, juiciest, REAL pineapple is sitting right in front of you, it even tastes like it too! Wow, honestly the Nectar Stick folks know what they are doing. The products are effective and delicious and they might honestly turn this flower girl over to a vape girl! 9.5 for the Pineapple Nectar!! WWW.EDIBLESMAGAZINE.COM | EDIBLES MAGAZINE | MAY 2016

PAYROLL :–TO PAY OR NOT TO PAY? Like rent, payroll processing is a task that produces no revenue, though it is a necessary evil for business owners who wish to stay in business. Time spent processing payroll is time not available to add to the bottom line, whether that might be increasing sales, collecting receivables, developing new products or even taking some time to relax and recharge the batteries. All of these things are more productive than payroll processing which can only create risk for the owner as well as cost time and money.

BREAK THEM IN WITH TOPICALS APOTHECANNA REVIEW

What’s the risk? Every single paycheck includes at least five required tax deductions in each state which then must be added to other employer taxes and voluntary deductions, and every one of these items is an opportunity for a problem to occur. The late or incorrect deposit of these tax liabilities can result in costly penalties and interest for a business owner. A payroll service provider shoulders both the workload and the liability of the payroll processing and the business owner can now focus on bottom line - running and growing their business. The employer maintains complete control over when and how the payroll is processed, wages, raises, reviews, hiring, and benefits. Access to information is also not a valid consideration as business owners have complete access to all reports, history, personnel data as well as report writing capability with our web based service. Since there are no "contracts" in payroll, no employer is ever forced to stay with a service they find unsatisfactory for any length of time. All payroll services can be terminated with a simple letter or phone call. The biggest benefit of tax filing service is that if ever a notice arrives from the IRS or EDD, a client simply faxes that to their service provider to be handled. These notices often result from a mistake by the IRS or EDD and are cleared up very quickly – all without any effort from the business once that fax is sent. The employer who does it himself (for "free") will spend many hours responding to such notices, hours away from the business that can never be replaced. Outsourcing your payroll function, by the way, does not relieve you from your tax responsibilities, but it does put the liability on the shoulders of your contracted Payroll provider, not you! The cannabis industry is no different than any other industry when it comes to basic business expenses. If you’re not already processing with a payroll provider and need help getting your cannabis business legit contact us at KCBusiness-Solutions.com. 818-618-2474 | Karin Clarke | karin@karinclarkebiz.com

AN OVERVIEW OF CALIFORNIA’S NEW

(AND IMPROVED) MEDICAL MARIJUANA LAWS

This past Friday I chaired a “Medical and Recreational Marijuana in Southern California” seminar in Santa Monica. During the seminar, Governor Brown signed into law the three bills that comprise the California Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act (MMRSA). Needless to say, this was big news for all of us at the seminar. This is also, of course, big news for California and especially for its medical marijuana operators. These bills mean California will soon be moving away from an unregulated gray marijuana marketplace to a state-law-regulated medical marijuana regime. These bills mean that California will be getting the “robust regulations” the federal government requires from the states for the Department of Justice to be even minimally disengaged from what goes on with cannabis within the state. These bills also mean that California will be entering a new era where the Department of Justice (hopefully) finally cools its heels in the Golden State.

Throughout the seminar on Friday, attendees wanted to know how the MMRSA would operate, what local power would look like now, how licensing and any “priority” would work, and how some of the ambiguities in the bills would be sorted out moving forward. I was lucky enough as chair to have California Assembly Member Reginald JonesSawyer as a speaker, especially since he played a large part in crafting the language that now makes up a solid majority of the MMRSA. Assembly Member Jones-Sawyer gave attendees valuable insight into how this legislation came to be and what most concerned state lawmakers. It should be no surprise that the legislature’s biggest concerns were edibles, youth access to cannabis, and the impact marijuana businesses would have on their communities. It’s important to recognize that the MMRSA is made up of three bills–Assembly Bill 266, Assembly Bill 243, and Senate Bill 643, with each bill having a different function, while at the same time containing overlapping, identical language regarding certain aspects of medical marijuana control. I examine each of these three bills below: AB 266: AB 266 focuses on MMRSA’s overall regulatory and licensing set up by specifically doing the following: Legalizing all “commercial cannabis activity” undertaken pursuant to a state medical marijuana operational license (and pursuant to a local license or permit, if required by your city or county). Where California’s medical marijuana economy is currently made up of non-profit mutual benefit corporations or non-profit cooperatives, AB 266 allows for-profit businesses to obtain operational medical marijuana licenses from the state. Establishing the Bureau of Medical Marijuana Regulation (BMMR), which will be part of the Department of Consumer Affairs, under the supervision and control of the Director of Consumer 32

Affairs. The BMMR is vested with the power and authority to develop and implement any and all rules necessary to enforce the MMRSA.

Giving The Department of Consumer Affairs, the Department of Food and Agriculture, and the State Department of Public Health the power to promulgate and pass any rules necessary to implement the MMRSA. Setting up 17 different kinds of medical marijuana operational license types and prohibiting vertical integration (barring one exception below). A licensee may only hold a state license in up to two separate license categories out of the 17 and the state only permits certain combinations of licenses. Moreover, for growers, regardless of license combination, the state only allows up to 4 acres of total canopy to be cultivated while the license or license combination is valid. Providing for one difficult to attain carve-out for vertical integration. If your city or county has an ordinance that requires or permits vertical integration and your business was vertically integrated before July 1, 2015, and you’ve been continuously operating and registered with the Board of Equalization, you get to stay vertically integrated in the new licensing system until January 1, 2026, when that privilege will be repealed. Permitting cities and counties to regulate medical marijuana businesses beyond the requirements set forth under the MMRSA and the BMMR’s rules. The bill also allows cities and counties to ban medical marijuana businesses within their borders. Mandating local approval of your marijuana business by providing that “[a] licensee shall not commence activity under the authority of a state license until the applicant has obtained, in addition to the state license, a license or permit from the local jurisdiction in which he or she proposes to operate, following the requirements of the applicable local ordinance.” Note that the revocation of your local permit or license means you cannot operate in that city or county even if you still have your state license. Giving local jurisdictions the power to tax and assess fees against medical marijuana businesses. Setting forth the requirements for marijuana deliveries in California. Delivery of marijuana by a dispensary to qualifying patients or designated primary care givers will be licensed by the state only if it is also allowed in the local jurisdiction in which the dispensary licensee operates. Prioritizing licensing for certain medical marijuana businesses. In issuing licenses, the state must prioritize any facility or entity that can demonstrate to the state’s “satisfaction” that it was “in operation and in good standing with [its] local jurisdiction by January 1, 2016.” In addition, an MMJ business that is operating in compliance with local zoning ordinances and other state and local requirements on or before January 1, 2018, may continue its operations until its application for licensure is

approved or denied. So in other words, if you can get your cannabis business up and running by the end of this year with local approval where required, you will likely have priority when it comes to licensing under the MMRSA. I and my firm’s other Californialicensed cannabis lawyers are already getting calls and emails from existing and new clients seeking help on this. Providing the following special carve-out for the City of Los Angeles, with its long embattled local marijuana laws: Issuance of a state license or a determination of compliance with local law by the [state] shall in no way limit the ability of the City of Los Angeles to prosecute any person or entity for a violation of, or otherwise enforce, Proposition D, approved by the voters of the City of Los Angeles on the May 21, 2013, ballot for the city, or the city’s zoning laws. Nor may issuance of a license or determination of compliance with local law by the [state] be deemed to establish, or be relied upon, in determining satisfaction with the immunity requirements of Proposition D or local zoning law, in court or in any other context or forum. AB 243: AB 243 focuses on regulating marijuana cultivation for medical use and on California’s environmental concerns regarding marijuana cultivation. This bill: Gives the California Department of Food and Agriculture the power to promulgate any and all rules necessary to accomplish the regulation of medical marijuana cultivators. The Department of Food and Agriculture will also be the one issuing and overseeing all cultivators licenses. Tasks the California Department of Pesticide Regulation, in consultation with the California Department of Food and Agriculture, with dealing with pesticide usage and safety as those relate to marijuana cultivation. Calls for the California Department of Food and Agriculture to work with the Department of Fish and Wildlife and the State Water Resources Control Board to ensure that “individual and cumulative effects of water diversion and discharge associated with cultivation do not affect the instream flows needed for fish spawning, migration, and rearing, and the flows needed to maintain natural flow variability.” Provides for the same standards set forth in AB 266 regarding local control and licensing and permitting to apply in AB 243. Nonetheless, “[i]f a city, county, or city and county does not have land use regulations or ordinances regulating or prohibiting the cultivation of marijuana, either expressly or otherwise under principles of permissive zoning, or chooses not to administer a conditional permit program pursuant to this section, then commencing March 1, 2016, the [state] shall be the sole licensing authority for medical marijuana cultivation applicants in that city, county, or city and county.” Does not apply to qualifying patients engaged in

personal cultivation if the cultivation area does not exceed 100 square feet and if the qualifying patient does not sell, distribute, donate, or provide marijuana to any other person or entity. It also does not apply to designated primary care givers growing for qualifying patients if the cultivation area does not exceed 500 square feet, he or she cultivates marijuana exclusively for the personal medical use of no more than five specified qualified patients for whom he or she is the primary caregiver, and he or she does not receive remuneration for these activities, except for compensation provided in full compliance with Section 11362.765(c) of the California Health and Safety Code. Calls for the California State Department of Public Health to develop standards for producing and labeling all edible medical cannabis products. The Department of Public Health will also almost certainly be in charge of regulating the edible potencies as well. SB 643: Just like its companion bills, SB 643 contributes to the regulatory and oversight structure of the MMRSA. It also specifically sets forth standards for licensed medical physicians and doctors of osteopathy (“physicians”) who recommend marijuana for medical use and it delves into the criminal background standards for applicants. The main points of this bill are the following: Tasks the California Medical Board with prioritizing investigations of physicians who excessively recommend cannabis for medical use, fail to have a bona-fide patient relationship with those persons for whom they recommend cannabis, or fail to adhere to sufficient record keeping regarding their cannabis recommendations. Makes it a misdemeanor for a physician to recommend medical cannabis to a patient and then to accept, solicit, or offer any form of remuneration from or to a state-licensed medical marijuana business if the physician or his or her immediate family have a “financial interest” in that business. Mandates that applicants for any medical marijuana license must submit fingerprints to the Department of Justice for a criminal background check. The state can deny a license application if “[t] he applicant or licensee has been convicted of an offense that is substantially related to the qualifications, functions, or duties of the business

or profession for which the application is made. . .” In determining which offenses are “substantially related to the qualifications, functions, or duties of the business or profession for which the application is made,” the state will take into account the following: felony convictions for the illegal possession for sale, sale, manufacture, transportation, or cultivation of a controlled substance violent felony convictions serious felony convictions, felony convictions involving fraud, deceit, or embezzlement. Allows for the denial of a license application if the applicant has any history of local sanctions, fines, or penalties for violations of local ordinances, including those related to medical marijuana commercial activity, and for any revocation of a local license within the three years prior to the application for a state license. Requires applicants to “[p]rovide evidence of the legal right to occupy and use the proposed location.” Applicants for a cultivator, distributor, manufacturing, or dispensary license must also provide the state with “a statement from the owner of real property or their agent where the cultivation, distribution, manufacturing, or dispensing commercial medical cannabis activities will occur, as proof to demonstrate the landowner has acknowledged and consented to permit cultivation, distribution, manufacturing, or dispensary activities to be conducted on the property by the tenant applicant.” Compels applicants for a cultivator or a dispensary license to provide the state with “evidence” that their proposed location is at least 600 feet from a school. “School” has not yet been defined. Mandates that applicants with twenty or more employees provide the state with a “statement” that the applicant will enter into, or demonstrate that it has already entered into, and abide by the terms of a labor peace agreement. Requires that those seeking to cultivate, distribute, or manufacture medical cannabis must submit a detailed operational plan disclosing to the state their plans for cultivation, their extraction and infusion methods, their transportation processes, and their inventory and quality control procedures. Tasks the state with developing an “organic certified” standard for medical marijuana in California by January 1, 2020, “if permitted [to do so] under federal

law and the National Organic Program.” All of the bills also mandate that various state agencies set up rules and systems for the following: Tracing cannabis product, Record keeping, Antidiversion systems for transporting cannabis product, Quality assurance testing standards, Robust labeling and packaging, Safe product handling, Security requirements We will need to see how the various California state agencies use their rule making authority to fill in the blanks left by the three bills. For example, licensing and renewal fees have yet to be set, we don’t yet know exactly how edibles and infused products will be regulated under the bills, residency requirements (if any) and investment regulations need to be set, and none of the bills directly discuss how medical marijuana businesses will (or will not) be able to advertise their products and services. These issues, and more, will be addressed through state agency rule making that will take place until at least January 2018. In our practice at Canna Law, we’ve handled licensing applications for all kinds of complicated and heavily regulated state licensing regimes with comprehensive and complicated barriers to entry, including in New York, Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Florida, Nevada, Minnesota, Maryland, and Illinois. It is obvious to us that in crafting its own three medical cannabis bills, California borrowed language from already existing laws and regulations in many of these states. It is also clear to us that California is going to have one of the most comprehensive and complicated medical marijuana licensing regimes in the country. Consequently, California medical marijuana businesses should start preparing now for this future of extremely robust regulation. Though California probably will not issue licenses until well after January 1, 2018, it is never too early to prepare your business for the radical changes this new and massive regulatory system will bring. ______________________________________________

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH INFUSED EDIBLES

As we drove through the desert on a seemingly never-ending road, I wondered what the hell we had gotten ourselves into when we decided to do this story. I suddenly realized that I was no longer in my safe place – that is Downtown LA – anymore. We were in Desert Hot Springs getting ready to walk into the Infused Edibles factory. The dashing co-owner Chris immediately welcomed us upon arriving. As we entered, we were greeted by the sounds of infectious laughter and music. The space had been set up previously as a dispensary, so it was the perfect location for a cannabis candy company! There were three ladies and one gentleman having the time of their lives gabbing and working away, bagging and tagging all types of gummies – bears, belts and worms, oh my was It was a magical site! Chris introduced us to his team – Miss Sue (Chris’s mom & co-owner), Miss Vicky, Miss Linda and Mister Dave. Aside from Chris who is 31 years old, everyone on his team qualifies for the senior discount at the movie theater. However, despite the fact that they are not 25, they can pump out thousands of bags of candy a week! The co-owner affectionately spoke about his rowdy team, “Everyday is like a social gathering. Everyday we come together and talk about our lives, we care about one another, and we laugh and cry together. We care about what we’re doing and the patients we help,” Chris lovingly expressed. Chris who was a chef by trade and his mother Sue began the company almost three years ago. Sue’s background was in accounting and was working with a dispensary helping them with bookkeeping in Santa Cruz. Chris was managing the same dispensary therefore; they would see all of the edibles that came through the door. They saw all of the wasted products that would be tossed out and thought there had to be a better way. After starting out with toffee in a jar and spices mixed with kief, they moved into gummies because the shelf life was longer and frankly all of the gummies they had tried tasted horrible. We discussed his reasoning behind hiring aging Americans instead of younger people, “Imagine 36

someone who has gone through cancer three times and they have had both their breasts removed and they are in the hospital cheering up other people. That says something about them. Then you hear they are also raising their grandchild and taking care of their elderly mother simultaneously, what do you do? You give them a job, because that is a strength we can all draw from” Chris said with tears welling in his eyes, speaking of Miss Vicki.

the moms trying to help their kids and those will serious illnesses all turning to cannabis to improve the quality of their lives. In happy tears, she recalled how far the business has come in almost three years. She told us story after story about their products helping people and how she wishes others she knows would stop being adverse to cannabis and try it. We discussed how the stigma against cannabis is still prevalent even among her friends.

The truth is that with older people comes a strength and wisdom that only comes from being on the Earth for many years and making it out alive through several situations. Though with age also comes with some limitations. Chris joked about how sometimes the team will make mistakes here and there, like putting THC edibles into CBD edible bags. He also explained that with an aging staff comes a set of limitations that you would not normally face i.e. vision, weight lifting, etc., but he would not trade his team for anything.

Miss Linda and Mister Dave are a wonderful pair who have been with Infused for a couple of years now. Miss Linda is quite the animated person meanwhile Mr. Dave is a bit more reserved. They met Chris through a mutual friend and ultimately came to work for the Infused brand. They both use cannabis products for arthritis and other symptoms. Miss Linda was taking 30 lactate pills a day just to be comfortably eat cereal, as she suffers from serious stomach issues. Now, she takes CBD oil three times a day and it provides the same relief. Neither of them ever thought they would end up in this industry, but they both feel as though cannabis has changed their lives for the better. Linda was also diagnosed with breast cancer and used cannabis to help get through the radiation treatments.

The Team Behind Infused Edibles Miss Vicky began working with Infused Edibles after meeting Miss Linda at the Palm Desert Regional Hospital during the latter part of her chemo treatments. Their appointments were back to back, so they eventually got to know each other. Miss Linda had an Infused topical, which is made using industrial hemp CBD and a hypoallergenic, fragrance free, medical grade lotion which she introduced Miss Vicky to. She began using the product for the burns she had from radiation. She also began taking CBD edibles in lieu of her highly addictive medications she was prescribed to. She was diagnosed with stage III HER-2 breast cancer. It was very aggressive and had spread to her lymph nodes as well. Miss Vicky has been an avid cannabis user since the age of 16. Miss Vicky had us in stitches throughout the entire interview. Miss Sue with a 25-year background in accounting for mainstream industries never thought she would be in this industry. Her company laid her off and it was then that a dispensary in Santa Cruz ended up hiring her to help them become legal i.e. set up the business license, bank accounts, etc. She explained how there were kids just going to the dispensary to get stoned, but there were also the real patients – the elderly people,

We had such a great time chatting with the lovely ladies and gentlemen behind the gummy sensation – Infused Edibles. We even got the low-down on which products are their favorites: Miss Vicky - Turkey Jerky, Cranberries, Mangos and Cashews Miss Sue - Trail Mix Miss Linda - Strawberry-Banana Belts Mister Dave - Strawberry Tubes and Turkey Jerky Chris - Take-N-Bake Brownies and Turkey Jerky The Infused Edibles team is a family. They are a family that cares about what they are doing and who they are helping. Infused Edibles offers a wide array of products that not only taste good, but are extremely effective. They are not the typical company found in the cannabis industry. They do not have large backers and have built their company from the ground up. There is not a doubt in our minds that Infused Edibles will make it through. Though this company may be small in comparison to others, it is mighty!

PRODUCT REVIEW GUMMIES, DRIED FRUIT, SNACKS & MORE

Infused Edibles offers a myriad of gummies, fruit & nuts, savory & spicy, tinctures and take-nbake items, all made with either THC and CBD. The gummies are what put Infused on the map. Unlike many of their competitors they do not spray CO2 or use BHO in their infusion process. They have a proprietary process that allows them to individually infuse each product.

20-25 minutes. The cake is a basic yellow cake with sprinkles in it. To turn this cake into your own work of art, you can add all of your favorite ingredients and icings.

Although Infused Edibles offers an array of award winning gummies, we decided to review some of the more nontraditional items on the menu. We tried the 300mg dried mangos, 300mg grapefruit gummies,300mg dried cranberries and the 400mg take-n-bake birthday cake.

I thoroughly enjoyed the mango slices. Roughly six pieces come in the package and they taste amazing. There is definitely a cannabis taste, but it is not overwhelming. The ingredients are simple: dried mangos and marijuana extract. There are no crazy chemicals you cannot pronounce or preservatives. They are vegan and gluten free. I tried to stop myself, but I ended up eating all of them in one sitting. Shortly thereafter, my eyes started to get heavy and I felt that very familiar head change and was out. These things are incredibly potent, and work quickly and effectively. Next came the grapefruit gummies. These are different than the typical gummy worms and sour patch kids that we see in the market. These were not quite as healthy as the mangos, but are quite delicious nonetheless. They are gummies shaped like slices of grapefruit coated in sugar. The THC is much less detectable in these. Unfortunately, once more I could not keep from eating almost all of them. I would take a nibble and put it down then take another nibble and set it down. Eventually I repeated it enough times that the package was empty!

Moving on to the dried cranberries… These things are another awesome healthy choice. The taste of cannabis is prevalent when you first put them in your mouth, but eventually the taste subsides. The dried cranberries are the perfect choice for daytime medicating. They are discreet and 300mg is dispersed throughout the entire bag. This means you only have to eat a couple of them to achieve the desired effects.

Last but not least, the take-n-bake birthday cake weighing in at 400mg. Their line of revolutionary just-add-water products includes cakes, cookies, brownies and even mac n’ cheese! The mix comes in a simple black pouch marked with ingredients and pertinent information. When you open the package you find cake mix, a small package of multicolored sprinkles and a cake dish. The only additional items you need are: ¼ cup water, an oven and a cookie sheet. The process is fairly simple. Pre-heat your oven to 325°F. Mix the ingredients together, add water and pour the batter into the cake dish. Place the cake dish on a cookie sheet and bake for

We covered our cake in chocolate frosting and split it between two of us. The cake was surprisingly moist and super delicious. There were bits of hash visible though the taste was not at all overwhelming. The high from it was wonderful. A feeling of calm immediately fell over me. I was happy and giggly although not very productive. It was a very happy high. I suggest this be eaten on a weekend or a night that you do not have much to do after consumption.

Infused Edibles are truly in a league of their own! Please be warned, I ate these products and just kept eating. I didn't realize I was high until all of the sudden I was definitely high. I conked out and was out cold for the reminder of the night. Check out the full Infused Edibles menu at: www. InfusedEdibles.org

MEDITHRIVE: NEW & IMPROVED IN SF

B. LE GRAND EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Having lived in San Francisco for 8 years, I am well acquainted with Northern California’s dispensaries. What I love about NorCal shops, is that they do not have to deal with raids or shut downs from local law enforcement, and San Francisco has certainly led the way in the passing of California’s Compassionate Use Act. The inspiration behind creating Edibles List and Edibles Magazine sparked when I noticed the severe difference between NorCal and SoCal edibles and dispensaries. I wanted to create a way to tie the state together, and gather the nation’s edible vendors together into one central portal. Even today, it seems that San Francisco’s dispensaries are leading the way in California. Medithrive is a prime example of the new way of cannabis. They first opened their doors in 2009, with 3 partners and a city-issued license to operate. In 2011, Federal interference temporarily succeeded, as U.S. Attorneys in California sent out thousands of letters to landlords threatening forfeiture of their property and exorbitant fines, if they did not evict any businesses relating to the sale of medical marijuana. Medithrive voluntarily shut their doors due to the proximity to a school. For the last few years, they operated a delivery service, called Medithrive Direct, out of the back door of another brick and mortar storefront in downtown San Francisco. Even though the federal government attempted to disrupt with medical cannabis in California for the last 5 years, cannabis is winning the war on drugs. Medithrive re-opened their storefront in 2016, after the Department of Justice made amendments to the law in 2014 and the 2015 defunding the DEA preventing them from interfering with states that have medical marijuana laws. Additionally, San Francisco made amendments to their cannabis zoning regulations which allowed Medithrive’s location to be compliant. It also helps that since Medithrive’s original closure, four states and D.C. have legalized the adult use of cannabis. Located at 1933 Mission Street, the decor of Medithrive is quite the juxtaposition from what you would expect when walking in off Mission St. The shop is just blocks from the 16th and 38

Mission BART station. While going through the re-opening process, they brought on new investors and hired a “regular business world CEO,” to take their dispensary to the next level.

They spent the time to tour both medical and recreational dispensaries in Colorado and Washington for inspiraton their new and improved look. When you walk into Medithrive, it resembles an Apple store, with exposed concrete walls, backlit and glass displays and 4K resolution flatscreens enhancing the view of the trichomes on bud. You will notice there are no formal lines, no bulletproof glass windows and no formal cash registers. They wanted to an inviting design, rather than treating patients like they are criminals. Medithrive boasts an elegant edible display that allows you to see the edibles out of their packaging, unlike any other shop I have seen in California. It is a very creative and efficient way to handle the opaque packaging regulations set into place by the city.

When they opened back up, they received overwhelming support from the school nearby that was the original reason for having to close.Having security and surveillance cameras cleaned up the streets, making it safer for children going to school and walking home in the neighborhood. No longer are there heroin or crack addicts using that part of the street for shelter or drug deals.

In addition to the beautiful edibles display, their bud flowers are uniquely showcased in well-lit glass dome enclosures placed throughout the lobby floor. A knowledgeable budtender greets you to and takes you to a viewing counter, (which is an artsy poured glass molded surface), where you can checkout the selection and ask questions. Their bud flower is all top quality medicine, and they offer a wide range of options for every price point. Medithrive’s goal was to be able to supply high quality medicine, without sacrificing quality for price. They want to give every patient the best they can get. For example, even if a patient only has $10, they can still get a top-shelf pre-roll and be able to medicate without smoking shwag weed. They also boast an extensive selection of edibles including Kiva Bars, Mediroons, Om Edibles, Infused Creations and more. They even carry 3 exclusive flavors from Strictly Edibles and they have the widest selection of concentrates I have ever seen a dispensary carry, which adds to the reason they were able to gain marketshare in San Francisco. Medithrive’s buyer says the key to their success is giving the patient what they want, offering them multiple options in each sub genre of products, and carrying excellent medical cannabis selections. They still operate their delivery service in San Francisco as well, with a 2-hour delivery window, you can get anything they have in-store, delivered to your door. The best part to know if you are a patient in San Francisco, is that they have the best referral program, get a free eighth when you refer a friend. Of course, there are some stipulations, the free eighth comes on your second visit, after you’ve both spent $30 on donations. They also have a generous “First Time Patient” goodie bag that comes with a Medi-Mix Pre-Roll, HempWick, stickers, a storage tin and coupon for a free gram on your next visit. If you are new to medical cannabis or need your medical card renewed, a recommending doctor’s office is conveniently located across the street. We highly recommend checking out this amazing shop setup in San Francisco. They are located at 1933 Mission Street. Visit www.Medithrive.com for more information.

CANNABIS & ARTHRITIS KYMBER WARD STAFF EDITOR Arthritis is an ailment that afflicts 52.5 million adults, and is expected to climb to 67 million by 2030. Currently, there is no cure for the condition and current treatments include pharmaceuticals with severe side effects. Cannabis is a suitable alternative, as it naturally possesses pain relief and anti-inflammatory properties. However, many medical officials are averse to prescribing marijuana for rheumatic disease citing the lack of the data on the efficacy of the plant. Though there may be limited resources on this issue, that does not mean there is nothing on the subject. The Rheumatology journal published a study from Dr. ShengMing Dai of China’s Second Military Medical University found that CB2 receptors are found in unusually high levels in the joint tissue of arthritis patients. The use of cannabis is shown to fight inflammation in the joints by activating the pathways of CB2 receptors. Dr. Jason McDougall, Canadian professor of pharmacology and anesthesia at Dalhousie University in Halifax, has received a grant and backing from the Arthritis Society to commence a new three-year study to examine cannabis and if it is not just dampening the pain in the brain, but also working to fight inflammation and repair the joint itself. In fact, on May 4, the Medical Cannabis Research Roundtable, comprised of high-level physicians, patients, researchers and experts, urged the Canadian federal government to invest $25 million in clinical trials and medical research. The funding will be targeting three main points: • Basic Science – to have a better understanding of the role of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in disease, and to explore how medical cannabis impacts disease progression, physiological function, and how the body processes cannabinoids. • Clinical Science – to include peerreviewed observational and clinical trials with a focus on safety, efficacy,

dosing and administration. • Health Services & Policy – to include the exploration of issues of wider policy concern such as equitable access to medical cannabis, how to manage and market medical cannabis in the context of legalization, knowledge transfer to health care workers and the broader public, social and economic impacts. There are two main forms of Rheumatoid (RA) and Osteoarthritis (OA). RA is caused by a malfunction of the immune system. Instead of fighting off intruders such as bacteria or viruses, the body attacks the synovial membranes, which facilitate the movement of joints, eventually destroying cartilage and eroding bones. Osteoarthritis (OA), or arthritis of the bones, is also found primarily among the elderly, where cartilage has been worn away through many years of use. Arthritis may also manifest as chronic inflammation of the joints as the result of injuries. Arthritis of any type can be an extremely painful and debilitating condition that presents challenges for pain management. The use of cannabis as a treatment for muscloskeletal pain in western medicine dates to the 1700s and as far back as 2000 BC the Chinese called cannabis a treatment that “undoes rheumatism.” The current most effective treatment for arthritis is a pain management regimen comprised of painkillers and aspirin, which often have limited benefits and hazardous side effects. Cannabis is known to have natural analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties with limited side effects. Though cannabis has been shown to help if ingested or inhaled, that is not the only way it can help arthritis sufferers. Cannabis infused topicals can be applied directly to the inflamed area and immediate relief will be seen. For current marijuana patients looking for arthritic relief, look for products (or the flowers themselves) including these strains: Blue Dream, Girl Scout Cookies, Mango Kush, Sour Diesel, Harlequin (High CBD), Blueberry Kush or Agent Orange. meDIBLE rECIPES: Ingredients: 1 cup raw cannabis leaves 1 cup water

How-ToMake Raw Cannabis Juice

Juicing cannabis is a great way to get the nutrients the plant provides without getting high! If cannabis is not heat activated, THC is not produced. When you juice cannabis you end up with predominantly THC-A and CBD, two profiles with known healing benefits.

Instructions: For juicing cannabis we recommend only using organic never-sprayed cannabis. Remove the stems. Take the leaves and rinse, soak and rinse again. Add cannabis leaves into a blender or a masticating juicer (the kind of juicer used for wheat grass). If you use blender, strain the juice before consumption. Store in glass jars, it will stay fresh in refrigerator for up to 2 days. Freeze for delayed consumption.

Canna Chinese Chicken Salad

Ingredients: 4 cups napa cabbage, sliced thin 1 tbsp extra virgin canna olive oil 1 tbsp rice vinegar 1 tsp low-sodium soy sauce 1/2 cup carrots, grated 1 tbsp minced ginger 1 medium clove garlic, pressed 2 tbsp chopped cilantro 1 cup diced bell peppers (your choice of red, yellow, and/or green) Seasame seeds for garnish 4 oz cooked chicken breast, shredded or cut into cubes Instructions: In a bowl mix canna olive oil, rice vinegar, soy sauce, ginger and garlic. Then add cilantro. In another bowl toss cabbage, peppers, carrots and chicken. Mix dressing in. Top off with seasame seeds to garnish and Bon Appetite!

Smokin' Salmon Sandwich Ingredients: 1 salmon fillet 1/4 cup red onion, minced 2 tsp lemon juice 1 tbsp extra-virgin canna olive oil 1/4 tsp freshly ground pepper 4 tbsp reduced-fat cream cheese 4 slices pumpernickel bread, toasted 4 slices tomato
1 large leaf romaine lettuce, cut in half

Instructions: Combine salmon, onion, lemon juice, canna oil and pepper in a medium pan. Cook on medium heat until salmon is flakey. Spread 1/2 tbsp cream cheese on each of 4 slices of bread. Spread 1/2 cup salmon salad over the cream cheese. Top with 2 tomato slices, a piece of lettuce and another slice of bread. 52

Eggs in a Bong Stoney Breakfast Ingredients:

2 tbsp olive oil (use canna olive oil for extra potency) 4 slices bread of your choice 2 tbsp cannabutter 4 large eggs 1/2 tsp sea salt 1/4 tsp black pepper 1/4 tsp paprika

Instructions:

Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees F. Coat four 1-cup ramekins with oil and place on a cookie sheet, you may also use a muffin tin. Butter the bread slices all over, then place each slice of bread inside a ramekin, pressing gently to tuck it inside the ramekin. Break an egg into the middle of each slice. Bake until the egg whites are fully cooked – approximately 20 minutes. Gently remove bread from ramekin. Add salt, pepper and paprika to taste.

FOOD SCIENCE: RACHEL ZEMSER STAFF EDITOR Everyone wants more protein in their diet and luckily now there are more ways than ever to add protein to your cannabis baked good products. Since everyone has specific protein preferences, it is important to be aware of the proteins available and pick the one that best fits your clientele. The FDA recommends about 50 grams of protein a day, but of course, every individual has different protein needs based on their lifestyle. There have been many diet trends over the years that focus on high protein and low carb meals, including the latest “Paleo” style diet program. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to protein consumption levels and this article is not designed to mandate any specific amount, but more inform edible makers of what types of proteins they can work with and how to incorporate them into food products Proteins are often defined as either “isolates” or “concentrates”. A typical protein concentrate may deliver about 80% protein, while an isolate is usually a powder that has more than 90%. The other 10 to 20% is made up of carbohydrates, sugars and whatever else was derived from the source. Protein powders can be bought in bulk online. It is important to ensure that you only buy unflavored protein powders - to avoid adding unwanted artificial flavor, present in the raw material, into your final product. There are vegetarian plant based proteins that are extracted from soy, pea, potato and lentils. Soy protein is an allergen and should be listed on your ingredient statement. Pea protein can have a “beany” taste that may not work with your edible

FORMULATING WITH PROTEINS creation. There are also rice proteins, which are allergen free and without any of the strong flavors associated with pea. Then of course, there is our favorite protein - the hemp protein. It has a delicious nutty flavor and soft texture. It is fairly easy to find (usually available at markets that sell bulk or organic ingredients). The only big issue with Hemp is the price. Most of it is imported from Canada and can cost $10 to $15 a pound. Dairy based proteins are extracted from milk and include casein, whey, or a combination of the two. A combination may be referred to as “milk protein concentrate”. Always look closely at the ingredients and make sure the information is clearly labeled on your finished product baked good as well. All dairy proteins are considered to be allergens and should be listed on your packaging. Meat based proteins like gelatin and collagen are now being considered as protein boosters in baked goods and snacks. Gelatin and collagen are thought to be very good for the bones, skin and joints. Meat based proteins are obviously not vegetarian and is made from animal by-products, including skin, bones, and connective tissue. Brand new on the market is an 80% chicken protein powder isolate, sold by IDF (http://idf.com/ dehydrated-chicken-protein-powder/). There are various harder to find, having only just come to the market products are typically sold by manufacturers in large quantities i.e. pallets. These include coconut protein (50% protein concentrate), Lentil protein powder (80% protein concentrate) and Potato protein (90% protein isolate) When creating baked goods with proteins you should try a low, medium and high

level of protein in the food product. Too much protein may make your cookies or cakes very chewy or, if you use dairy based proteins, it may give it a sweet “milky” taste. Meat proteins like gelatin can give your finished product an undesirable flavor as well. To understand what this flavor is, go to any store and buy sheets of plain, unflavored gelatin and you can then decide how much of that flavor you want in your finished food product. For smoothies, protein powders do not really “dissolve” they just disperse so if you plan to make a dry protein shake mix, you should either blend it with other ingredients (like a starch or maltodextrin) that will give you a final thick smoothie texture, or suspend the proteins in the aqueous portion of your mix (the water or milk) with a gum like xanthan, guar, or carrageenan. Always weigh out your ingredients carefully and calculate the grams of protein by how much protein was in your starting material. If you begin with an 80% protein concentrate, multiply the grams called for in your recipe by 80%- then divide that amount by the number of total portions made from the recipe. Clients like knowing how many grams of protein will be in their serving. You should mention it on the package as “X grams of protein per serving”. With THC infused edibles the portions are usually quite small so this scenario of delivering 5 to 10 g of protein per serving would make sense if the serving is full sized and dosed appropriately for someone to consume in one sitting. For assistance with all your cannabis food product creations you can contact Rachel directly at Rachel@cannabisculinologist. com or check out the website: www.cannabisculinologist.com

CANNABIS & DIABETES

GLAUCOMA & CANNABIS

Diabetes is something that afflicts almost 10% of the American population. A shocking, 11.8 million people over the age of 65 have it; that means 25.9% of all seniors suffer from this illness. As America’s baby boomers grey, more and more of them are turning to healthier lifestyles, and healthier lifestyles include cannabis. In 2005, research was released by the American Alliance for Medical Cannabis (AAMC), which found that cannabis could benefit those with diabetes in a number of ways. Studies have found cannabis to be helpful in treating type 1 and 2 diabetes. In fact, two additional studies were released in 2013 in the American Journal of Medicine and in the Natural Medicine Journal in 2014, both concluding very definitively that cannabis helps diabetics. The findings showed that cannabis helps control glucose levels. Additionally, users are found less likely to be obese, and have lower BMI with smaller waistlines. Users showed higher levels of HDL – “good cholesterol” - as well as having better fasting insulin and were less insulin resistant. A 2015 study by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, showed that the anti-inflammatory properties in cannabis effectively treat several illnesses including type 2 diabetes. Cannabis is also neuroprotectant meaning it actually helps protect nerves from inflammation. Cannabis also lessens the pain of neuropathy by activating receptors in the body and brain. Some components of cannabis (perhaps cannabidiol) act as anti-spasmodic agents similar to the far more toxic anti-convulsants like Neurontin. This action of cannabis helps relieve diabetic muscle cramps and gastrointestinal tract upsets. There are even more ways cannabis can benefit diabetics! Marijuana also helps to keep blood vessels open improves circulation. It can also reduce blood pressure over time. Though it is not generally categorized as an anti-hypertensive, it does aid in lowering blood pressure. This is something vital in treating diabetes. Additionally, using cannabis in food provides long lasting blood levels of key cannabinoids. Cooking in general allows for overall blood sugar maintenance. Cooking with cannabis can be optimal in this as cannabis butter and oil substitute triple bonded fatty acids for the saturated fats normally contained in these essential cooking products. This substitution will benefit cardiac and arterial health in general. If nighttime hypoglycemia is a problem then a cannabis cookie can be very helpful. Topicals infused with cannabis can be applied directly to hands and feet affected by neuropathic pain and tingling. Cannabis topicals can treat restless leg syndrome – often plaguing diabetics – in a more natural way, versus having to take muscle relaxants. 68

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world. Over 60 million worldwide suffer from glaucoma. It is a complicated disease in which the optic nerve leads to progressive, irreversible vision loss. There are several types of glaucoma including the most common two; primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and angle-closure glaucoma (ACG). Medical marijuana has been used as a treatment for glaucoma by patients for many years in the United States, however due to the stigmas and legalities surrounding cannabis, aging Americans have not widely accepted it as a treatment, yet. Medical marijuana has always been promoted as a treatment for a laundry list of diseases and symptoms including glaucoma. Though the plant is currently classified as a schedule I drug citing that is has no medical benefits to it – this is simply not true. The primary goal in treating glaucoma is to reduce the levels of intraocular pressure (IOP). Currently, the main techniques in accomplishing this are medications and eye drops, laser treatments, and surgery. However, smoking cannabis has been definitively proven to lower IOP as well. The idea that marijuana can be helpful in treating glaucoma dates to the 1970s. Studies conducted then showed that smoking marijuana lowered the IOP of people with glaucoma. Unfortunately, glaucoma needs to be treated 24 hours a day and the effects of cannabis only last 3-4 hours, meaning that one would need to consume cannabis 6-8 times a day. The problem with this is that right now there is very little actual data on how much cannabis must be consumed each time for it to effectively lower IOP levels. Researchers are working to find a more effective method for cannabis to be used in treating glaucoma. In fact, Canasol a cannabis derived eye drop was created in Jamaica by developers including ophthalmologist Dr. Albert Lockhart. As technology improves, no doubt we will see a far more effective method of treating glaucoma using cannabis.
