Cover STORY:

Start Low & Go Slow CO Edibles Billboards

At an intersection in Denver, CO, a billboard has been erected in which passerby’s are confronted with a woman sitting on the edge of her bed in a bleak hotel room with her hands on her head, seeming to be in a mental and physical crisis. The ad states “Don’t let a candy bar ruin your vacation,” and the tip “With edibles, start low and go slow” below. Helping to bring awareness to the public is part of the marijuana activist organization Marijuana Policy Project, and is intended to warn those who choose to consume marijuana edibles to ingest the appropriate dosage and take it slowly. The scene depicted takes one back to New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd’s recently infamous retelling of her less than favorable experivence of ingesting too much of an edible, causing her to “lay curled up in a hallucinatory state for the next eight hours.” Her story went instantly viral and, not surprisingly, struck up debate for safe consumption and the dangers of not having the adequate amount of knowledge. “We don’t want adults to be over-consuming marijuana, just like we don’t want them to be over-consuming alcohol. We need to be encouraging them to be responsible, and giving them the information they need to do that,” stated Marijuana Policy Project spokesman Mason Tvert. Colorado state regulators are discussing ways to provide patients and consumers with more detailed packaging and labeling, and stricter regulations on the amount of THC dosage allowed in each product. Mr.Tvert went on to say, “The problem is that people have just not really been educated about the actual effects of marijuana and marijuana products. They’ve simply been told never to use it, and that they’re stupid if they do. And that’s not a very useful education effort.” For some, this billboard may be a questionable way to advocate for marijuana reform, but it certainly shows signs of educating users of marijuana for medical and recreational use becoming more widely accepted into mainstream culture.

B. LE GRAND EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Where are you originally from? Far East of Russia, the city of Vladivostok. Did you know you wanted to be a model / actress growing up? I was a very shy and introverted person. Many strangers picked on me and teased me for my physical features, which brought me much pain and misunderstanding. I wanted to be accepted and loved. Modeling gave me that chance to be comfortable in my own skin, become confident and free from opinion of others. I learned who I was and learned to love and appreciate myself the way I am, inside and out. I am grateful to my friend Natalia who brought me to a fashion theater when I were 13, so I could have a chance to become who I am today. How did you first discover you had a talent for performing? Once I felt comfortable in my own skin, I became fearless and happy to say “Yes” to life and all it had to offer. Very soon I was on local television advertising local businesses, clothes, events, and was hosting a popular TV show. I appeared on the covers of major magazines in my town and was one of the few models that made a good name for themselves. What brought you to America? I came to the US on a H1B visa to work as a model. My mom found City Model agency in San Francisco, that loved me and sponsored my visa to come to this amazing country. What has been your most memorable job so far? Every time I am on a runway, in front of a camera, or on a set, I am the most grateful and happy. I simply love to be present in the moment and “be me.” The most recent and incredible memory I have from doing promo work is with Arsenal ad agency in Culver City, for the 4th season of “American Horror Story: The Freak Show.” It was beautiful and scary. I had to scream a lot, out loud. 10

ANIA SPIERING

It was great. Being beautiful is exhausting, being real and powerful gives me the most pleasure. That is what I am after. Who has been your favorite to work with so far? (Tell me about Chris Cornell!!) Luis Miguel, Anna Lenox, Fusha, Oscar de la Renta, Robert De Niro, Ben Affleck, Josh Stolberg, Doug Hutchinson... the list goes on and on. Every job is my favorite, seriously. I loved playing a “Mystery Woman” in the theme song “You Know My Name” by Chris Cornell to the 2006 James Bond film, Casino Royale. I always wanted to play a Bond’s girl. Got that close. What are your thoughts on cannabis? Cannabis is a naturally grown, has medicinal benefits which help many sick people to get and feel better. It should be legalized and treated with care and respect. How are you / your circle of friends involved in the medical marijuana community? Many people I know use marijuana as medicine and as a recreational drug. I support their choice, even though I do not use it recreationally myself. In Hollywood, how do you see the influence of cannabis? Is it everywhere? More people use it than one can see or hear about. It is still a “big secret” many live with. I think it has to be legalized, and everyone should have a choice to use it and not be punished for it. The Government should not be in charge of nature. Do you feel more celebrities should come out and openly support/endorse the cannabis movement? Many more celebrities should speak up. I hear so many stories about how cannabis changes lives for the better. People with influence should use their power to change lives of many for the better, for sure. Do you prefer to smoke cannabis or eat edibles? I’ve tried both. I am very sensitive and marijuana affects me greatly...

What are your thoughts on legalization? Marijuana should be regulated and taxed. Yes, legalized. People are going to do it anyway, and if they are not hurting anyone else by doing so, they should be free to use it without fear. It’s worth noting that there has been no increase in crime or any other negative effects in the states where marijuana was legalized just recently. By taxing it and treating it as a personal choice, just like alcohol, many problems would be solved and tax dollars could be used for education and other things that would have a very positive effect. Also it would give law enforcement much needed time to focus on violent crimes instead of arresting and tying up the courts with non-violent offenders. Many horrible things happen when people get drunk but when they get high they just seem to get happy, listen to music and eat pizza! Was cannabis or hashish readily available growing up in Russia? I grew up in the Far East of Russia. My family tells me stories about how marijuana plants were growing wildly all over the place and nobody used it in any way for they had no idea about the power of the plant. Nowadays, it’s all controlled by the government. Another interesting fact is, there is an indigenous Arctic ethnic group from a very remote area that uses opium as their main medicine to treat any kind of illness till this very day. That is all they use. Their life span is about 35 years though... Do you believe medical marijuana should be viewed as a medicine and not a drug? Marijuana should be viewed as both, a medicine and a recreational drug, because it is used as both. As long as there is clarity and understanding, there should be no problem in taking the responsibility for one’s actions. Where do you hope to see cannabis in 10 years? As any medicine, I wish to see cannabis, in a drug store with proper information on its usage and its side effects.

Washington D.C. & Oregon Legalize

Crowdfunding Platform

Launches New Cannabis Business

Florida Votes NO

NATHAN FOISY STAFF EDITOR Edibles List 4:20 issue Cover Star, Cheryl Shuman (marijuana millionaire mom), has announced her latest brainchild, CannaDabbaDoo.com, launching the marijuana industry’s very first crowdfunding for the green rush platform. Cheryl’s CannaDabbaDoo.com, (presently in beta), as she put’s it on her new web site, “is a crowdsourcing platform helping people in the Cannabis industry connect, grow businesses and basically make things happen in the world of Cannabis around the world.” Connecting new businesses with investors, allowing for capital funding and business growth. NATHAN FOISY STAFF EDITOR On November 4th, several states voted in accordance with regional guidelines and support on legalizing the recreational or medical use of marijuana. Several State’s initiatives, measures, and amendments showed a major shift in societal perception and cannabis reform. As a result, Washington, D.C. and Oregon both legalized ts recreational use, while Florida did not receive majority vote in favor of legalization. Washington’s Initiative 71 enacted the recreational use of cannabis for Washington’s residents, with 65% in favor. This measure will allow citizens to possess up to 2 ounces of marijuana as well as grow up to six plants in their residence. Oregon’s Measure 91, which allows citizens to grow up to four plants or personal use passed with 54% in favor. Surprisingly, Florida’s proposed Amendment 2, which would allow medical use of marijuana, did not receive enough majority votes to pass. Florida currently allows the medical use of high CBD/low THC oil, and Amendment 2 would have allowed further expansion of cannabis for medical benefits. If passed, Florida would have become the first Southern state to legalize the use of medical marijuana. The recent voting day was a mixed bag with a majority of positive reforms, clearly showing that cannabis advocacy is steadily growing. 12

Cheryl is the founder of Beverly Hills Cannabis Club, has profited immensely from the recent marijuana boom (or as she likes to refer to her business - the “Pot Com Boom”). She has gained extensive knowledge and experience in her field. With CannaDabbaDoo.com, “the early adopters and investors that get in now will be the Billionaires of the industry in the very near future,” says Cheryl. “…Our business development division matches entrepreneurs with funding. We are the pioneers blazing the trail.” Cheryl is continuously paving the way for marijuana normalcy by carving out her niche in Beverly Hills, with steadfast motives to allow cannabis to truly be a financially massive addition to the economy, as well as an invaluable medical remedy. The legal marijuana market is expected to rise 64% to $2.34 billion in 2014, up from $1.44 billion. Investors seeking new ventures need look no further, as marijuana’s value is increasing quickly and exponentially. Shuman states, “I’m thrilled to help build these new companies and watch millionaires in the making working with them on their media, branding and political strategies as they go through the crowdfunding process.”

Marijuana Does NOT Lower IQ

on Edibles Fails

NATHAN FOISY STAFF EDITOR

NATHAN FOISY STAFF EDITOR

A recent study conducted by the University College of London contrasts prior claims that marijuana use lowers IQ. The study and its results were presented at the European Conference of Neuropsychopharmacology in Berlin.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s proposed ban on all marijuana edibles except for lozenges and tinctures, was shot down almost immediately during an October meeting of a 22 member panel of experts there to discuss potential changes to marijuana laws.

The study was performed on over 2,000 students, and information was gathered at age 8 and again at age 15. The goal was to determine if cannabis use and/or other substances such as alcohol and drugs do in fact cause a decline in IQ. Results showed “no relationship between cannabis use and lower IQ at age 15,” and a report from The Washington Post stated “even heavy marijuana use wasn’t associated with IQ.”

The proposed ban came about as a call to action to further distinguish regular cookies and candies from their infused counterparts. This meeting was held before Halloween and a story circulated that some Colorado police were worried pot candy will ruin Halloween treats. The proposal also springs from the overdose related instances and misleading appearances. After triggering backlash from marijuana groups and other pot supporters, however, the Health Department is backing away from its proposal. Lobbyists and activists alike were outraged at the counterproductive proposal.

The study did take into account the other socioeconomic factors that exist as part of one’s education and use, stating that “in particular alcohol use was found to be strongly associated with IQ decline,” and there were “no other factors were found to be predictive of IQ change.” According to a recent report from Pew Research Center, “About seven-in-ten (69%) Americans believe alcohol is more harmful to a person’s health than marijuana.” The study should be indicative of a more thorough examination of the many health benefits cannabis carries, and a removal of the outdated stigma that marijuana users are generally less intelligent than non-users. Author of the study Claire Mokrysz mentioned that “this is a potentially important public health message- the belief that cannabis is particularly harmful may detract focus from and awareness of other potentially harmful behaviors.”

16

Colorado’s Proposed Ban

The evidence in this report will hopefully make a big difference in the thinking of governments and organizations that seem to be presently focusing on marijuana use alone, leaving out the other obvious and differing variables that people are faced with throughout their lives. The case is hopefully the first in a positive chain of awareness that will allow society to step back and reevaluate what is actually detrimental to us.

Since 2012, Colorado’s marijuana-legalization has allowed dispensaries and clinics to sell marijuana in any of its various and legal forms. Concerns were continuously being voiced that packaging and labeling was not sufficient, while some saw concerns with THC milligram maximums. The ban also springs from the overdose related instances and misleading appearances. This sort of proposition may have been a healthy question and regulation prior to the legalization and widespread retail acceptance. But by proposing such a measure, there seemed to be little room for reasonable parameters regarding retail pot sales. Though the CDPHE said banning all edibles was not its intention, the proposition would have severely limit companies’ offerings and products. There has, however, been plans for a February 2015 implementation of new policies, such as setting a THC level of 10 milligrams to each edible serving, with a 100 milligram maximum, and addressing the packaging, labeling, and proportioning of edible products. Mason Tvert from the Marijuana Policy Project commented, “It’s unfortunate that so much time is being spent discussing proposed bans, when it could be spent discussing realistic approaches that could actually have the intended effect of preventing accidental and over-consumption.” Here’s to hoping a happy medium will soon be found, so marijuana’s overall positive effects will begin to outshine its false notoriety. 17
