According to the National Eye Institute, “Studies in the early 1970s showed that marijuana, when smoked, lowered the intraocular pressure (IOP) in people with normal pressure to those with glaucoma.” 2) REVERSE THE CARCINOGENIC EFFECTS OF TOBACCO In January 2012, there was a study that was published in the American Medical Association that found smoking marijuana did not harm lung function, and even improved lung capacity. 3) EPILEPTIC SEIZURES Tetrahydrocannabinol, more commonly known as THC, binds to the brain cells responsible for controlling excitability and regulating relaxation resulting in the control of epileptic seizures. You can read more of these findings at the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. 4) DRAVET’S SYNDROME Dravet’s syndrome results in severe developmental delays and seizures. A recorded forty plus children, in Florida, are being treated with marijuana that is high in cannabidiol and low in THC. The most extreme case reported a dramatic decrease in her seizures from 300 a week to 1.

Benefits of Cannabis 12) ARTHRITIS Some of the main healing properties of marijuana are pain management, anti-inflammatory, and sleep aide. All of which are aliments of people who suffer from arthritis. 13) METABOLISM AND BALANCED WEIGHT Recently the American Journal of Medicine released an article suggesting that pot smokers are, on a whole, skinner and have a healthier metabolism than the average person. 14) LUPUS Lupus is roughly defined as when the body starts attacking itself for no reason. Marijuana has been related to having a positive effect on the body’s immune system. Some studies even go as far as to suggest that the same properties can also be related to the affects it has on pain and anti-nausea. 15) SPURS OF CREATIVITY IN THE BRAIN Several studies have gone underway to understand the brain when under the effects of marijuana. Studies have found that people get better at coming up with new ideas and have far greater concept relevance. 16) CROHN’S DISEASE A recent study in Israel has recently come to the conclusion that smoking marijuana significantly reduces the symptoms of Crohn’s disease.

5) STOPS CANCER FROM SPREADING Researchers at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco reported back in 2007, that CBD may stop the spread of cancer. Some researchers are even suggesting that some properties in cannabis could even kill cancer.

17) PARKINSON’S DISEASE Medical marijuana not only improves the sleep of Parkinson’s disease sufferers, but it also reduces pain and tremors significantly.

6) DECREASES ANXIETY Marijuana acts as an efficient mood stabilizer, especially for patients that suffer from social or panic disorders. With the proper dose it can alleviate anxiety.

18) POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD) THC possesses major sleep aide properties in addition to relaxation assistance. Recently, the Department of Health and Human Services had recently approved the treatment of medical marijuana to treat military veterans.

7) ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE A study lead by Kim Janda of the Scripps Research Institute suggests that marijuana may slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Amyloid plaques kill brain cells and cause Alzheimer’s. THC slows the formation of said Amyloid plaques. 8) MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS In May 2014, the Canadian Medical Association Journal published a study with results that varied, however majority of participants showed significant improvement. 9) OTHER MUSCLE SPASMS Smoking marijuana is almost always able to alleviate spasms, if not immediately, a short time after having smoked the cannabis.

19) POST STROKE PROTECTION Some researchers suggest, from the University of Nottingham, that cannabis can possibly reduce the affect area of the brain affected by a stroke. 20) CONCUSSION & TRAUMA BRAIN PROTECTION Although no human testing has occurred as of yet, some evidence suggests, in mice, that marijuana can actually heal the brain after a traumatic injury and /or concussion. 21) ELIMATE NIGHTMARES The reason why marijuana is such a good sleep aide is because how it affects the later stages of the sleep cycle also known as REM sleep.

10) HEPATITIS C TREATMENT OPTIONS A 2006 study in the European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology found that 86% of patients using marijuana successfully completed their Hepatitis C therapy, while only 29% of non-smokers completed their treatment, possibly because the marijuana helps to lessen the treatments of said side effects.

22) CHEMO SIDE EFFECT TREATMENT The FDA has multiple approvals on drugs that use THC and/ or CBD because there is actual validity in the healing properties of medical marijuana. It is the most common and sought after healing properties in marijuana and these same healing properties are appetite stimulation, pain treatment, decreasing of nausea, and finally sleep aide. All of which are important if not necessary to a person being treated with chemotherapy.

11) INFLAMMATORY BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS) IBS symptom alleviation from cannabis is due to the THC properties. The THC increases permeability in the intestines allowing bacteria to penetrate.

23) HELP DRINKERS TO CUT BACK Alcoholism involves the disruptions of the Endocannabinoid system. Proven to be the lesser of two evils, CBD and THC helps drinkers cut back and reduces the side effects of alcohol. 5

B. LE GRAND EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Most people would think that consuming cannabis would adversely affect an athlete, especially a former professional runner, but Chris Barnicle rejects that theory and states that cannabis actually helped him become a better athlete. A Massachusetts native, Chris was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease when he was 19 years old, while going to school in Fayetteville, Arkansas. It affected him so adversely it he was hospitalized after his first marathon. His gastrointestinal disorder led him to find his own way of medically controlling his symptoms with cannabis infused peanut butter sandwiches. Being a long distance runner, Chris didn’t like the idea of the carcinogens taken in when smoking cannabis. He says, “there are so many other ways to medicate.” Chris was a three time all American in track and field, while attending undergraduate school at University of Arkansas and graduate school at the University of New Mexico. His specialty was running the 5K and 10K. He then ran professionally post collegiately, and was sponsored by Asics and New Balance, he also qualified for the Olympic trials. His running took him all over Europe and he even traveled to Kenya to train with the world’s best. Chris and his business partners Micky Corbin and Dan Lacava (also long distance professional runners), had to avoid the standard drug testing procedures for athletes. Chris recalls putting his body through extreme stress, cleaning out and sweating out the remnants of THC in his system from smoking one celebratory joint after his first win. Together they have won 40 national championships as coaches and two while in school. While many sport authority 10

agencies are lowering their testing threshold for cannabis, Chris believes they shouldn’t even be testing for marijuana. He said, “the fact that cannabis is being scheduled as a street drug with heroin, methamphetamine, and cocaine, when there are many medical benefits to cannabis, I believe this is absurd. This is what really needs to change. There are many former NFL players that are coming out saying that cannabis has helped them with their concussions. That’s a serious problem in the NFL, where you have suicides and violence related to concussions, and if cannabis can be a start to change that, then I think the NFL should be trying to use it, and let their players medicate if they choose. I’d like to see more athletes and people ‘coming out of this closet of cannabis’.” Chris goes on, “It’s an openness that needs to be accepted. But I think there needs to be people like myself need to come out and say, “Yes, I use cannabis. It is just a flower. And I use it. So what?” In April 2014, Chris ran his last race. When he got back he found out he had a stress fracture on his tibia, which was his fourth stress fracture. The sport of running had taken him many places, but he didn’t want to risk a fifth stress fracture and put his body through the possibility of permanent damage which could cripple him. He wanted to try something new with his life, and his other passion besides running had always been cannabis. Instead of going out on a Friday nights to the bars, Chris and his teammates would have an edible in the evening, using it as a way to replenish their bodies from running 100 miles per week. When practice time came everyone else would show up hung over from the bars and they would be fine. Chris, Micky and Dan have turned the nostalgia of their competing days into a cannabis energy bar, called Zip Organics. Made from all organic

ingredients, infused with gourmet espresso beans and cannabis coconut hash oil. It was designed to be equivalent to a cup of coffee, giving a perky effect, unlike most edibles that a sedative effect. Each bar contains 25 mg of THC per bar, 8 grams of protein, and 250 Calories per bar. Chris says it’s great for yoga, and lifting weights, running or hiking. The Zip bars are available in two flavors, Sweet Potato Date and Pumpkin Cherry. “Having just a couple bites, I feel like I’m able to get a little more zip into my work out,” which is where the name came from.

During his track days he was in the closet about his cannabis use, to avoid losing his scholarship. But to those that say “Oh, you’re an athlete, you can’t use cannabis,” Chris rebuttals with, “No, it’s an herb.” He has always been a supporter of cannabis, and Chris was quick to add that he had his mothers support, and she influenced him with making edibles when he was in high school. Never letting cannabis slow him down, Chris feels like it has always helped rejuvenate his body, in addition to helping with his lack of hunger being an athlete. On his journey of connecting fitness with cannabis, Chris believes that the next step of legalization, is dispelling the labels of stoners and potheads. “People from all walks of life use cannabis.” They also hope to launch a topical pain cream line for athletes to help rejuvenate physical injuries.

NFL: Relaxing

it’s Marijuana Testing Policies

NIKOLE GRANGER STAFF EDITOR Le’Veon Bell, running back for the Steelers, was arrested in August with the suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana. Wes Welker, Denver Broncos, and Josh Gordon, Cleveland Browns, are also suspended from the game due to the current policy in place. Medicinal Marijuana is being cast in a negative light for far too long. Currently there is a large number of professional ball players who are on suspension and/or involved in a drug abuse program. If all goes right and the drug policy is reformed than some of these players can avoid suspension all together. “Instead of punishing players for marijuana use, the NFL might be better off figuring out how pot’s medicinal benefits can help players deal with pain,” writes Dan Graziano in an ESPN NFL article. It does not make logical sense to hold certain people to separate standards. The state may have legalized medicinal marijuana and still holding players to a backwards and outdated way of thinking. People sometimes fail to remember that change is progress. When things change, i.e. environment, thought process, and even tolerance levels, people grow as individuals and in return inspire others to grow. It has been proven that even second hand marijuana smoke can cause a player to test positive. This is partly because marijuana today is far more potent that it was, even just 20 years ago. The new policy will allow NFL players to have a higher ng/mL maximum. All one can do is wait and see if the NFL and Player Association can come to an agreement about marijuana. Currently there is no set deadline for an agreement to come to a conclusion. Right now it

is progress for the discussion to be underway; A true sign of the times. The current NFL policy states that the maximum nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) are 15 for marijuana. Currently airline pilots have a maximum threshold of 50 ng/mL. Far more shocking is the World Doping Agency for the Olympics has a maximum threshold of 150 ng/ mL. Here is a small list of NFL players who have been suspended for Marijuana or a Marijuana related offense.

Philadelphia Decriminalizing Marijuana

Drops F-Bomb & Quits on Air

DAN CAPENER STAFF EDITOR On October 20, 2014 the “City of Brotherly Love” will also take the Crown as the largest city in the Country to decriminalize marijuana. Councilman James Kelley’s decriminalization law passed the city council with a 13-3 vote, which was enough votes to override a potential mayoral veto. However Mayor Michael Nutter signed the bill September 8th, with the support of Philly cops, community organizations, African Americans, and council members. The bill was introduced in May 2014 by councilman Jim Kenney in Philadelphia. Philadelphia’s laws originally state that a $200 fine and a three hour drug abuse course were the appropriate consequences for non-violent marijuana offenders as long as the possession amount did not exceed that of one ounce. The newly passed bill will allow people with no more than thirty grams (just under an ounce) to walk away with a $25 fine. This is comparable to that of a parking ticket on your record. As for public consumption the fine is $100 or complete 9 hours of community service. Mayor Michael Nutter received an enormous amount of pressure to sign the bill from the youth in Philadelphia, the majority of which coming from the African American community. This is a huge stepping stone for Philadelphia and all Americans who are high on the love Philly has show towards decriminalizing marijuana. On October 20th, 2014, Not only is this making history for all Americans, but it becomes a trial run example for other large cities. Given that this bill affects roughly a 1.6 million population Mayor Nutter requires a three month trial period before this bill truly takes effect. One must also keep in mind that this bill is not in compliant with violent marijuana crimes. Upon further research into this bill it also has no affect on previously convicted and/or otherwise incarcerated individuals for similar marijuana crimes. Annually the tax payers spend approximately $350 million enforcing marijuana laws. It seems this may be a cost effective way for large cities to remain solvent in these tough financial times. 12

MMJ Advocate & Club Owner

B. LE GRAND EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Charlo Greene, an Anchorage KTVA reporter, dropped the F-bomb and quit on air during a KTVA 10pm Sunday newscast September 21st, 2014. She revealed she was the owner of Alaska Cannabis Club, telling viewers she would be using all of her energy to fight for legalizing marijuana in Alaska. Greene reported on the Alaska Cannabis Club, initially without revealing her connection to it. At the end of the report, during a live shot, she announce that she was the club’s owner and resigned on air. “Now everything you’ve heard is why I, the actual owner of the Alaska Cannabis Club, will be dedicating all of my energy toward fighting for freedom and fairness, which begins with legalizing marijuana here in Alaska,” she said. “And as for this job, well, not that I have a choice but, F*** it, I quit.” She then proceeded to walk off camera. When reached post newscast, Greene said KTVA had no idea she was going to quit, or that she was connected to the Alaska Cannabis Club. When commenting on why she quit in such a dramatic way, Greene said, “Because I wanted to draw attention to this issue. And the issue is medical marijuana. Ballot Measure 2 is a way to make medical marijuana real... most patients didn’t know the state didn’t set up the framework to get patients their medicine.” “If I offended anyone, I apologize, but I’m not sorry for the choice that I made,” she said. An opposing group for marijuana legalization stated on its Twitter page, “Big Marijuana. Big Mistake. Vote No on 2 #KTVA reporter covering ballot measure 2 loses her mind, confesses to being an owner of the cannabis club and quits while on the air.” The Alaska Cannabis Club started in April 2014, connecting medical marijuana cardholders with other cardholders who are growing cannabis. They say they hope to increase access to medical marijuana patients, despite operating in a legal gray area within Alaska’s murky medical marijuana laws.

Women Vs. Men: Women Have Higher Marijuana Tolerance Levels Than Men

cover feature:

NIKOLE GRANGER STAFF EDITOR “Marijuana is very different than it was 40 years ago. It’s much higher in THC and lower in Cannabidol, so a little goes a very long way,” said Professor Rebecca Craft, who has spent the last several years compiling her findings to publish. Professor Craft has been able to conduct her research through a grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse and said findings were in fact published in the journal of Drug and Alcohol Dependence. Craft and her research team at Washington State University currently have several research projects underway. All of which involve the differences in behavior under psychoactive drugs. Professor Craft states that right now her primary research goal is to determine how the endocrinological and neurobiological differences between male and females may explain their differential sensitivity to psychoactive drugs. • Intracranial Stimulation -- to examine reinforcing effects of drugs • Drug Discrimination -- to examine interoceptive (subjective) effects of drugs • Swim Test; Sucrose Preference; Novel Object Conditioning -- to examine anti-depressant effects of drugs • Elevated Plus-Maze; Predator Odor Test -- to examine anti-anxiety effects of drugs • Evoked Pain Tests (e.g., Tail Withdrawal, Paw Pressure, von Frey, Hargreaves) -- to examine analgesia against acute & chronic pain • Spontaneous Pain Tests (var. pain-suppressed behaviors such as burrowing, feeding) -- to examine analgesia against chronic pain • Spontaneous Locomotor Activity, Catalepsy Tests -o examine motor-activating and suppressing effects of drugs • Behavioral Observation -- to assess complex behavioral phenomena such as opioid withdrawal

16

Craft expresses several unknowns going into this experiment. For starters, the fact that most, if not all, other research conducted on effects of marijuana have only been done on men. Through studies at numerous laboratories indicate that males and females are affected differently by opioids and cannabinoids. This made me wonder as to why. Why are men the necessary test subjects for effects of marijuana? The reason as to why men are the ideal test subjects is because men have a more stable hormonal profile. Women have a hormonal profile that fluctuates up and down throughout each month.

There are a few reasons why men and women are affected by marijuana differently. Most common would be that men and women metabolize marijuana differently and at different rates. Other speculations are that women simply approach smoking marijuana differently than men do, which also has an effect on the body. For insistence women tend to first educate themselves on medical marijuana and from their findings they proceed with a sense of caution. Also, women tend to experience more pain over their lifetimes than men do; example, child birth. This could be the reason why women are prone to have a great tolerance level because they have the body designed to deal with a significant amount of pain and continue to operate. Professor Rebecca Craft was unavailable for comment. Through her website at Washington State University you can see, in greater detail, her findings and what research she is currently conducting. Craft states that women are 30% more sensitive to THC than males. In addition, women also develop a tolerance level quicker than males do. Females tend to experience a spike in sensitivity during their ovulation as well. Professor Craft also looked into the “Munchie Effect” which is the need to eat/snack after having smoked or otherwise consumed medical marijuana. Men are far more affected by the “Munchie Effect” than women are; bright side ladies. Another interesting conclusion provided by Craft is the withdrawal symptoms of MMJ (Medicinal Marijuana) and how it affects the sexes differently. The typical withdrawal symptoms include, but are not limited to irritability, sleep deprivation, and loss of appetite. Through Craft’s research she has come to the conclusion that women are more likely to exhibit the withdrawal symptoms of THC than men. In addition, Craft also concludes that women are more likely to relapse when trying to quick. 17

Medible Reviews:

We’ve seen their cool ads that insinuate their edible will punch you in the face (see next page). We are here to tell you that Kushy Punch definitely packs a hit. I’m sure you’ve all been wondering, “what exactly is a Kushy Punch?” Kushy Punch is only 30 calories. It’s fruit chew that contains 70 mg of THC (also available in 200mg THC, and 60mg CBD). It comes strained out in hybrid, indica and sativa, which we absolutely love. Kushy Punch is made from an all organic cannabis infusion, unlike most other edibles out there using butane or C02. The texture and consistency is somewhere between a a gummy and a hard candy. When you take the edible out of the box the Kushy Punch is wrapped in wax paper that recommends cutting the chew into 4 pieces for safe dosing. We recommend consuming Kushy Punch with extreme caution, even if you have a high tolerance to edibles. They use a concentrated cannabis tincture for their infusion, and while it may seem like a small medible, if you consume the entire chew, it will surely hit you all at once later. We found that that this particular edible seems to affect the user about an hour or so after having consumed it, and the effects are long lasting up to 8 hours. Kushy Punch is great for insomnia, pain, daytime pain management (when consumed in small doses), nausea, and mood stabilization. You can also melt a piece of the candy into a drink or tea. If you do happen to consume too much of any edible, eating to slow your metabolism, and sleeping it off are the best ways to combat feeling “too high.” But if there’s anyway you can get a hold of a CBD tincture, a CBD strip, CBD bud flowers, or a CBD edible, CBD is the anecdote for a THC overdose. For more information go to www.KushyPunch.com

Taboo and unusual, Foria has brought to market a cannabis infused female lubricant for women’s health and pleasure needs. Made from coconut oil, THC and CBD oils, If ingested orally, Foria will produce the same effects similar to consuming an edible. The expected effect is heightened sensation leading up to and during orgasm, deep body euphoria and a feeling of deep relaxation. The recommended dosage is 4-8 sprays vaginally. Foria was designed to be applied to the entire vulva. They also recommend waiting approximately 30 minutes before engaging in intimate acts. Menopausal women have been some of their strongest advocates, reporting that for many it helps with dryness, loss of sensation as well as access to orgasm. We had the females on the Edibles List team personally tested the samples via vaginal intercourse. What we found was that it worked very well as a lubricant in general, and it definitely heightened sensation during and after orgasming. All in all we think it’s an extremely unique and forward thinking product. Check more out at www.ForiaPleasure.com
