LETTER FROM THETEXT EDITOR HERE TEXT HERE Greetings my friends,
Edibles Magazine Issue 32
June is here and it’s officially Summertime. Summer means quite a few things: swimming, beaches, barbecue and so much more - including PRIDE! It’s been nearly 48 years since the Stonewall Riots took place on June 28, 1969 in the Greenwich Village section of Manhattan, NYC. One year later in 1970, the first annual Pride parades were held commemorating the anniversary in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Chicago. To celebrate Pride, we reviewed PRIDE Brand Cannabis vapes by Buck Angel and Leon Mostovoy, and Scout Durwood visited LaGanja Estranja’s Dance Class in North Hollywood.

Q&A: WITH DR. MIKE
SUMMERTIME HIGHS Dr. Michael Heller, mjwooly.com Q: Hey Dr. Mike, I’m having a BBQ, how can I infuse my food? A: You can add some infused cannabutter or cannaoil into BBQ sauce or buffalo sauce to create medicated meat. You can also brush some infused cannabutter on your buns for infused burgers and dogs. Q: How do I get infused cannabutter or cannaoil? A: You can buy it at your local dispensary. Companies like Clarified Confections out of Oakland is an example of one company making infused clarified butter for patients to use in recipes. Q: What if I want to make infused cannabutter? A: Here is a simple recipe for infused butter. Recipe: Add to a crockpot: 1 oz. of ground cannabis flower, 1 cup of water and 4 sticks of butter. Simmer on low (temperature between 200 and 220 F) for 12-24 hours, stirring every couple hours. Strain out cannabis using a cheesecloth, I recommend allowing the crock pot to cool just enough so that you don’t get burned but make sure the butter doesn’t harden up. Once filtered, let the infused cannabis butter and water cool until a layer of butter hardens on the top. Remove the infused cannabutter layer and place in the fridge. The strength of your cannabutter will vary depending on the type of cannabis used, the temperature of the crock pot, and how long it is allowed to simmer. Q: I’m going camping, what are some infused snacks I can bring? A: Try making cannabis s'mores! Get some infused chocolate, marshmallows and graham crackers. Toast those mallows to perfection, sandwich it with chocolate and graham crackers...enjoy. Q: I’m having a party, how can I make cannabis cocktails? A: Proceed with caution, it is always dicey mixing cannabis and alcohol. I’ve known far too many people that have gotten the spins from this combo. However, alcohol is one of the best solvents for cannabinoids. Recipe: 750 ml bottle of high proof (151+) alcohol, placed in freezer overnight. 1/8th ground cannabis flower, evenly placed on baking sheet, baked at 240° F for 1 hour for decarbing. Place decarbed cannabis in 1 liter mason jar, add the bottle of chilled alcohol, put lid on and shake for 3-5 minutes. Remove lid, filter out cannabis by putting cheese cloth over the mouth of the mason jar and strain back into liquor bottle using funnel. The resulting alcohol will be between 10 and 30 mg of THC per 1 oz of alcohol, depending on the cannabis and alcohol used. Use to make cocktails, drink responsibly! Q: What is the easiest edible I can make for a shindig? A: Firecrackers! Take a bowls worth of ground cannabis flower, mix evenly into a tablespoon of peanut butter, and then place on a Ritz cracker. Then bake at 300° F for 10 minutes or until peanut butter begins to crisp. Have some questions that you want answered? Email: hi@mjwooly. com to get them answered by Dr. Mike! Issue No. 36 I Page 14

The Mystery Baking Company is Delicious: Case Closed! The Mystery Baking Company is bringing innovative, new and infused ideas to classic treats and delicious dishes, and takes a certain amount of creative inspiration from the mildly psychedelic cartoon “Scooby-Doo, Where are You!” which originally debuted in 1969. That makes sense, being that the creator and owner goes by “Scooby” and has since before he can remember. Scooby wasn’t always a creator of cannabis infused edibles - once upon a time he was producing music events and hip-hop concerts, and doing fun runs wearing a full size Scooby-Doo costume. When he decided to begin producing edibles way back in 2010, it seemed natural enough at the time to start by making “Scooby Snacks,” which were marshmallow and cocoa puff treats infused with canna-butter.
California and making and selling Scooby Snacks to dispensaries. As the years went by and the industry continued to change and evolve, he noticed certain trends come and go. There seemed to be a lot of “edibles” but a lack of “spreadables.” Patients seemed just as interested in getting the butter fueling the Scooby Snacks as they were in the actual products, and if people wanted the butter, there was a really good chance they’d want even more. After carefully considering all the different spreadable options he had to choose from, Scooby settled on producing a line of four Things went well, and Scooby continued infused spreadable products: producing events throughout Southern Butter, Peanut Butter, Honey, EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com

Peanut butter, honey and butter are some of the easiest ways for folks to infuse their own breakfasts and snacks, and hazelnut butter is quickly gaining popularity in the states. Keeping it simple by adding any of these potently delicious products to toast or bagels is easy enough. For the more confident or adventurous chefs out there, it’s an absolutely perfect way to infuse homemade crepes or muffins. If you’re interested in making your own strawberry and banana crepes infused with The Mystery Baking Company Budtella, see our recipe in this very issue. The MBC Canna-Butter melts perfectly and is ideal for making a cannabis powered grilled cheese sandwich or to pour over fresh popped popcorn to enjoy on the couch with a movie. For fans of peanut butter and jelly or peanut butter and honey sandwiches, Mystery Baking Co has what you need to make both and the combination tastes wonderful. Hyperbaric Chamber Vitaeris 320 Hyperbaric Chamber and God’s Gift
Patrick Ian Moore
“Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is the medical use of oxygen in a pressurized environment. Increased pressure allows for oxygen to dissolve and saturate the blood plasma, which yields a broad variety of positive physiological, biochemical and cellular effects. This non-invasive therapy is the most trusted way to increase oxygen levels to all organs of the body. In 1662, the first chamber
was built and operated by British clergyman Nathaniel Henshaw, called the Domicilium. Hyperbaric chambers were developed by the military in the 1940’s to treat deep-sea divers who suffered from decompression sickness, also known as generalized barotrauma or the bends.” It’s a fascinating science. My time with the Vitaeris was a spontaneous experience and I was already testing out W Vapes’ “God’s Gift” vape pen so I was feeling nicely medicated and blissful when i went inside. It felt a lot like being in a soft and serene inflatable coffin filled with ambient white noise and furnished with a nice window to keep things from getting too claustrophobic. When I exited the chamber I felt absolutely great and at least a few years younger! It was like suddenly feeling incredibly well rested and well stretched. I also felt like I’d taken hundreds of healthy deep breaths all at once. For information on getting your own hyperbaric chamber call 253.549.1270, and to see where you can get W Vapes products go to wvapes.com.

I dropped by the W Vapes offices in Studio City to get a new 420 mg disposable all-inone Indica vape pen with a dual viewing window, and was pleasantly surprised to discover they were testing out a Vitaeris 320 Hyperbaric Chamber that day. I was immediately excited to climb inside and try it out for a few reasons. For one thing, I recently discovered a love of sensory deprivation tanks and this somehow seemed similar. I guess both kind of made me think of an astronaut training program. It also looked a lot like the chamber they put Wade Wilson into in the Deadpool movie when his mutation finally manifests, and it reminded me of those stories of Michael Jackson sleeping in an oxygen tent. Pride Cannabis Skywalker OG Vape Cartridges
Milcah Halili and April Flores
We taste tested the Pride Cannabis Skywalker OG vaporizer cartridge while interviewing Buck Angel and Leon Mostovoy for Edibles List and were both incredibly pleased with both the taste and the feeling provided by this sweet new vape pen. The cannabis oil is medical grade, indica dominant hybrid, 100% solvent free, strain specific concentrate and it’s a nice and steady 67% THC. These sleek little golden colored cartridges are a full gram with a 510 thread and the tips are nice and round. The effects of the Skywalker OG were nice and mellow and left our bodies relaxed and our minds drifting in the best of ways. They even have their own direct inhale batteries with a stylus tip that come in a variety of colors. Pride Cannabis is also more than just a great product, it’s also a great story. “Pride Cannabis was founded by two Transmen, Buck Angel and Leon Mostovoy. Pride was created to promote natural alternatives to prescribed narcotics, as well as supporting general community health and well-being. Both founders, like many in the community, have struggled with anxiety, depression, addiction, and insomnia. One US dollar from each product sold will go to the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Senior Services.” Check them out online at: pridecannabis.com Issue No. 36 I Page 22

Mina felt guilty for not trying it sooner, but she was now on a mission. everything there was about cultivating, cannabinoids, extraction, infusion, and more - and Baron’s Confections was created. From seed-to-table they’re making organic, gourmet, elegant and infused edibles that are among the absolutely most beautiful and delicious you’ll find anywhere in the industry. Baron’s was at the Best of Edibles List Awards in February and took home six trophies in a variety of categories. They are clean-green certified and use an all holistic approach to growing and the edibles they make are infused with pure pressed fresh rosin from their own grown flowers. They make a variety of THC and CBD options and also have vegan treats to choose from too. I had the opportunity to sit with Kristina on their beautiful deck on the Baron's Southern California Farm while we medicated together using a special blend of Grand Daddy Purple Indica Cannabis oil her mother makes especially for her. Kristina wanted to make sure everyone knows that she feels great, she’s happy and she loves life! She loves animals, especially dogs and some of her favorite things to do are write poetry and read the works of William Shakespeare. Edibles and vaping are her favorite ways to medicate, and she has yet to try a kind of cannabis she doesn’t enjoy. Kristina said using cannabis helps her relax around other people and to feel more comfortable as well as liberated. I had an incredible time hanging out with this wonderful family and learning all about them and the great things they are doing with medical marijuana. Baron's Confections is truly doing innovative things and transforming expectations when it comes to the healing power of edibles. Check them out online at: baronsconfections.com

Kristina Smith b eca m e ill mysteriously when she was only 6 years old. After she spent six months in a coma, Kristina woke up and was diagnosed with Encephalopathy Etiology Unknown, meaning brain damage with an unknown cause. This meant Kristina now suffered from frequent seizures, ataxia (shaking), as well as a decrease in motor and speech skills. Physicians prescribed a plethora of prescription medications that did little to actually improve how she felt. Her doctor recommended using cannabis as a holistic approach to healing but Kristina’s mother Mina had strong reservations. The portrayal of marijuana in the mainstream media made her nervous about the risk of addiction and potentially harming her child with dangerous drugs. Nearly 15 years after first being suggested, Kristina decided for herself that she wanted to try using cannabis and told her mother. Now convinced that it was an idea at least worth trying, Mina got some cannabis buds from a dispensary and used them to infuse a homemade dish of chicken alfredo, Kristina’s favorite meal. Kristina finished her dinner and went to lay down early that night. 30 minutes later she got up and was walking and talking comfortably for the first time since age six. Mina was awestruck as she heard her daughter say: “Mom, I LOVE Cannabis. It makes me feel normal, it makes me feel free!”

LaGanja Estranja's Dance School
Scout Durwood
Monday night. 8:30pm. Time. To. Boogie. I showed up for LaGanja Estranja’s dance class at Basement of NoHo early and quickly spotted her picking up a pair of wigs from a fellow performer on the street. They hugged goodbye as I got out of my car and LaGanja trotted away around a corner in a midriff-bearing track suit and hat with a jacket tied around her waist. I followed her through an alley and down a flight of stairs into Basement of NoHo where she teaches a weekly dance class for LaGanja’s Dance School.

The crowd was super diverse, with outfits ranging from shredded leggings and heels to low key sweatpants and kicks. As we waited in the lobby for the class ahead of us to get out, I walked up to LaGanja who was perched on the armrest of a faded leather couch, a wig in each hand and introduced myself.

and a laid back energy all around. LaGanja started the class by announcing that she wouldn’t be wearing heels tonight because she is starting a second “Introduction to heels” class downtown, so this would be more about dancing and choreography while the other class would focus more on technique in heels. Then she added, “My feet hurt today. I’m not wearing heels,” and slipped on a pair of high tops. We started with deep, dynamic stretching, somewhere in between a follow-along modern dance and yoga. It was a longer stretch than I was expecting, and I was pleased towards the end when we got deep into our “death drop” muscles around our hip joints. Despite the class having a very “chill” feel overall, the stretch was challenging and fun, taking on an almost meditative quality at times. LaGanja gave instructions in a loud but mellow voice, less about the cardio and more about the flow.

PRODUCT REVIEWS Honey Tree Medicinals THC Oil Syringe Keiko Beatie
Recently, I had the pleasure to have a packaged syringe of Honey Tree Medicinal THC Oil given to me to use. In researching the product and company, I found a true passion directed to the patients were an imperative focus, as Honey Tree Medicinal were first patients themselves. The company was first developed from a friend’s kitchen in Orange County, California. They had medical issues and once they found results, it seemed they had to share these products with others in need of relief. Now their products are available throughout the state of California with glowing results.
drop under the tongue and had great results within just a few minutes. Very clean and taste was palatable as well. Later, I had a drop that fell which I used on a rolling paper to infuse a joint which I enjoyed very much. It had a light feeling while inhaling and the effects were completely relaxing and any stress points were relieved from pain.
The syringe is premium THC oil and can be used for dabbing, easily infused into edibles, or taken orally. Because of the syringe delivery, it seems to be a simple and clean method to measure out doses for when necessary. This particular oil strain was tested at a 90% THC and a .44% CBD. Honey Tree Medicinal has been providing highquality, pure medicine to Southern California since 2006. Honey Tree Medicinal products can be found many dispensaries and deliveries throughout California. For more information please visit: instagram.com/honeytreemedicinal
I understand that Honey Tree Medicinal utilizes all organic and health conscious materials in their products. The concentrates are extracted from pure, food grade alcohol, then put through a series of polished filters, and finally purged for 24 hours to remove the remaining alcohol. This process allows them to naturally capture both polar and nonpolar properties of cannabis, which leaves all the desired cannabinoids and terpenes in the oil.

Infused Edibles has developed a solid reputation in the cannabis industry as one of the leaders when it comes to making medicated gummies, nuts, and trail mix. What you may not yet be aware of is that they also now make Hemp CBD Vaporizer cartridges. These cartridges are a full milliliter in size and contain 60 mg of hemp based cannabidiol. Since the Infused vape carts are filled with hemp derived CBD and have zero THC, they’re 100% non-psychoactive. So not only are they safe to cross state lines, you don’t need a doctor’s recommendation to obtain, and you don’t even need to be concerned about operating heavy
machinery or not while using the product, because you don’t get high from it. That may not sound like it’s for everyone, but it’s exactly what many people are looking for when shopping for medicine. Hemp CBD can help with pain, stress, and tension management as well as insomnia and working to generally help better with relaxation. These cartridges have a 510 thread, meaning they’ll work with the majority of rechargeable batteries you’ll find. There are a variety of flavors to choose from - the one we tested for this review was “Pear”, and it was sweet and delicious like fruit flavored candy. Many people are also finding that Hemp CBD vapes can help a great deal with quitting smoking cigarettes and even to assist in giving up their dependence on nicotine vaporizers. Infused Edibles CBD vapes are well worth your attention, and very affordable. Check out Infused Edibles online to see more at infusededibles.org.

Grandma's Goodies Caramels & Ginger Snaps Tanganyika
A caramel is a caramel is a caramel right….that’s what I thought at first. Then I tried Granny B Goods Caramels, and I could tell they were trying to separate themselves from the rest. The smoothness of caramel could be felt initially when you put it into your mouth and then all of the sudden this smoky nut flavor invades your space. It travels up your nose and down your throat simultaneously. I squished it between my tongue and the top of my mouth and felt this bumpy texture that made me immediately grab the box to read the ingredients. When I see that they have walnuts in it, I relax and enjoy the remainder of this experience. The packaging is incredible, they include the 150 mg lab results, and it’s convenient to enjoy on the go. Please avoid if you have a nut (walnut) allergy,
but all others, definitely grab a box near you. Granny B Goods Cannabis Ginger cookies taste just like you can pick them up at your local grocery right now. They are great microdose options that you can take anywhere you go. Each morsel is around 10 mg apiece made with GLUTEN-FREE organic flour, so almost everyone can enjoy. They are made with cannabis oil extract so the potency is there. The packaging had subtle hints of cannabis, so I would definitely put this in my cabinet at home. What I also loved about the company is that they give 10% of their profits would go to support local charities. At a time when compassion is needed most this is a great gesture with an amazing product that we should support. Tell your local dispensary to get them today.

Nevada to Begin Recreational Cannabis Sales Next Month
Darcy Thompson
Nevada, the 7th state to legalize recreational marijuana, is set to sell recreational cannabis to anyone 21 and older this July. With tourism expected to be over forty million visitors this year, the state could be ready for the height of the season. Nevada’s recreational cannabis industry is projected to pass seven and a half billion dollars within its first seven years, where the law now permits adults to possess up to an ounce of cannabis and/or up to 3.5 grams of con

Cannabis social clubs just passed the Nevada senate last week, helping visitors out of the once restrictive use in only private residences. Currently, there are no other approved public social clubs in any other state. That sounds like a whole lot of fun! Can’t wait to take a tour of these clubs next time I’m in town. Recently, liquor wholesale distributors have filed a motion to stop medical dispensaries from distributing cannabis. The distribution model could be used without current alcohol distributors, but the alcohol distributors are trying to delay the start of what will benefit the whole state, recreational cannabis. Supposedly, the public will be able to comment on the matter. Issue No. 36 I Page 34

HEMPHERE HISTORY TEXT
Hemp History Week June 5th – 11th, 2017 Keiko Beatie
June is a celebration of Hemp History and we have so much to celebrate! Finally our country is turning the tide of prohibition as many states are able to grow hemp once again. If you recall that George Washington, considered the Father of our country, wanted all American farmers to grow hemp. George, being a knowledgeable farmer as well as a top military strategist and statesman, knew the vast potential that this sustainable plant had and the many products it could provide to this fledgling group of 13 states. It was in the 1930’s when the industrialists of our country chose to put the kibosh on hemp production. If this plant flourished, they wouldn’t be able to sell their products such as paper, pharmaceuticals and rope. 2017 makes the 8th year of recognizing Hemp History Week by the grassroots organizations Hemp Industries Association and Vote Hemp.com. This amazing natural plant needs our help, awareness and support in making it accessible to everyone in their daily lives.
Edibles Magazine Issue 36
In 2016 the hemp growth within the United States rose by 25 percent, reaching a market growth of $688 million dollars. Organizers and supporters planned to advocate for full federal legalization of industrial hemp farming this year and Hemp History Week will continue to raise awareness about the environmental sustainability, health benefits, regenerative agriculture potential and new innovative technological applications of industrial hemp. Regrettably the Drug Enforcement Administration recently announced their Final Ruling regarding “Marihuana Extract,” which attempts to give the DEA regulatory control over lawfully cultivated and manufactured cannabinoid products, including CBD products. On February 6, 2017, the Hemp Industries Association filed a lawsuit against the DEA regarding the agency’s illegal attempt to impede interstate commerce of lawfully cultivated hemp food products.
50
Over 1,500 grassroots events and retailer sales are planned for this June in celebration of Hemp History Week, coordinated by organizers, hemp farming advocates, and natural products industry leaders around the country. In Southern California at the Del Mar Fair San Diego and Orange County Fair in June, July and August, I will be presenting cooking with hemp, as I have had the pleasure of educating about this now for over five years. This year, I plan to nudge the awareness even more by adding CBD to the vegan and vegetarian dishes that Fair attendees may sample. It’s exciting, but I’m admittedly a bit apprehensive as I further push the envelope of education and outreach! Hemp is among the fastest-growing products and offers
a wide a variety of categories in the natural foods industry. Hemp seed is a rich source of Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids (EFAs), providing both SDA and GLA, highlydigestible protein, and naturally-occurring vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin E and iron. An excellent source of dietary fiber, hemp seed is also a complete protein—meaning it contains all ten essential amino acids, with no enzyme inhibitors, making it more digestible by the human body. Hemp seed, milk, ice cream, oil, cereals and snacks, as well as hemp protein powder, dietary supplements and body care are increasingly popular and available at natural and conventional grocers everywhere. Consumers are increasingly turning onto the nourishing health benefits of hemp foods and body products. Some of the leading natural product brands known for manufacturing the highest quality hemp products in the United States are: Dr. Bronner’s, Farmer Direct Co-op, Living Harvest TEMPT, Nature’s Path Organic, Nutiva, Pacific Foods, and Plus+CBD Oil. Congratulations and support needs to continue to the 32 states that have legalized industrial hemp farming. The Farm Bill Sec. 7606, that has passed to farm hemp in US states include: Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming. In 2016 Colorado lead the way with having over 5,000 acres devoted to hemp farming, followed by West Virginia with close to 3,000 acres and Oregon just starting with 500 acres. Exciting news as some of the first licenses to farm hemp in California will continue the growth and awareness to provide sustainable hemp to the community for years to come. No more prohibition on the wonderful harvest of hemp! For further information, please visit www. TheHIA.org and www.VoteHemp.com. Come see me if you’re on the West Coast and visit me at the County Fair this summer sharing all about hemp and CBD!

France Ends Incarceration for Cannabis Users
L.C. Squared
Newly elected French president Emmanuel Macron and his administration will be fulfilling their promise of progressive cannabis reform by implementing a new law by the end of the year that will end prison terms for cannabis users. However, according to spokesperson Christophe Castaner, these changes stop short of outright decriminalizing the plant itself. Castaner explains that it takes a police officer an average of six hours to make a single drug arrest which equates to the same amount of time used by the magistrate’s office in order to carry out the punishment. “Is the system effective? No,” Castaner said. “What is important today is to be efficient and above all to free up time for our police so they can focus more on essential matters.” A member of France’s police officers’ union supports these changes by saying, “It is a good idea that takes into account reality. Most police officers who stop consumers tell them to throw the joint away and then let them go.” While the new law promises to end prison sentences for cannabis use, according to Macron’s statements during his campaign, offenders caught by police may be ticketed up to 100 euros in fines. France is currently one of six countries in the European Union that criminalizes the use of cannabis. Cannabis possession in France carries a sentence of up to one year in jail including a fine of up to 3,750 euros. Cannabis possession remains illegal in the EU as a whole, but a majority of countries have mitigated the severity of punishments. Currently in countries including Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, offenders are either fined or given rehabilitation. Felicitations France! Cognitive Aging in Mice Reversed by THC
L.C. Squared
Edibles Magazine Issue 36
Cannabis is already known for a wide variety of effects it can have, but would you believe that when smoked by elderly patients, it actually makes their minds young again?
56
Researchers at the University of Bonn in west Germany and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel conducted a collaborative study in which they fed a daily low dose of THC to mice over the course of four weeks. The mice were arranged in three different age groups which included two months, twelve months, and eighteen months; the latter two represented mature and old age. The scientists then had the mice perform three different tests in which the mature and old mice treated with THC performed on equal standing to their younger counterparts who were given placebos. Furthermore, the older mice on THC performed better than the younger mice that were also on THC. In one experiment involving a water maze, younger mice under THC performed poorly while their older counterparts fared better, which the scientists confirm that it was in, “good agreement with the known detrimental effects of THC on cognition in young animals and humans.” The study concludes that THC reverses the cognitive deficits—learning and memory losses—that occur with aging.
which increases connectivity throughout their neural system. "With increasing age, the quantity of the cannabinoids naturally formed in the brain reduces," says research leader Professor Andreas Zimmer. "When the activity of the cannabinoid system declines, we find rapid ageing in the brain." When scientists analyzed the brain tissue and genetic markers of the mature and old mice, they found that there were physical changes that indicated cognitive youth. “Together, these results reveal a profound, long-lasting improvement of cognitive performance resulting from a low dose of THC treatment in mature and old animals,” the scientists write.
Their study has been published in the May issue of Nature Magazine which details the entirety of their experiment. http://www. nature.com/nm/journal/vaop/ncurrent/ full/nm.4311.html With these promising results, it may lead to a clinical study which will help determine whether or not a low dose of THC may have the same effect on humans. North Rhine-Westphalia science minister Svenja Schulz expresses her optimism in THC being used to treat neurological disorders, including dementia. As the study declares, “restoration of CB1 signaling in old individuals could be an effective strategy to treat age-related cognitive impairments.” Evidently, THC stimulated the receptors Cannabis may yet be on the verge of giving in the brain of the mature and old mice the elderly their mental youth back. April 420 Sales Reach $45 Million Dollars
Keiko Beatie
Edibles Magazine Issue 36
With more states becoming recreational and medical cannabis supporters, the community celebrated 4/20 as a National Green Holiday! Using the industry’s tech company MJ Freeway’s insight, general estimations are in for a retail market of $45 million dollars for the day of April 20th, within the United States alone. Their estimations and reports were generated from a majority of cannabis retail markets and clearly prove the industry is continuing to produce a rising market of astronomic proportions.
58
Many predictions by specialists and analysts speculated on what the big day would mean to the “Green Market”. The results showed a 20% expansion from 2016’s data for the Four Twenty holiday and a 13% increase of customer traffic raised the need for more product on the shelfs and increased supply for special events and parties.. Inversely the second biggest holiday for consumption is the 4th of July
and New Year’s Eve is the 3rd largest spending day in the cannabis retail market. Consumers purchasing more per order was a pleasant surprise and a spike in purchases of edibles and topicals contributed to the overall rise. This news only solidifies that the path to compliance is paved with green nugs. Nevada’s retail sales are scheduled to begin this year on July 1, 2017 only 3 days before Independence Day and with the reciprocity laws in place, many of the visitors to Sin City will be watching with delight to see what fireworks light up the skies. Overall, cannabis dispensaries in legal marijuana states estimated a 30 to 40 percent spike in sales for April 20th. Some outlets felt that leading up to 420, consumers were prepared and started on 4/19 as “Green Wednesday” and created a pleasantly heightened demand. A dispensary in Colorado opened up its first drive-thru dispensary on 4/20 - talk about a “Happy Meal”!

One of the reasons I love Summer; in June we come celebrate LGBTQ Awareness month as Pride Festivals dance across the county. Here within our cannabis community we are fortunate and honored to have some the most passionate individuals focused on growth, education and patient stories. Oh yes, and they just happen to also be members of the LGBTQ Community. At this time we here at The Edibles List would like to highlight some of our “LGBTQ Shining Cannabis Stars” to honor LGBTQ Awareness month.

This series will embrace the rise of the cannabis industry, the growers who are pioneering their way into a new cannaculture generation, and ultimately bring awareness & showcase the craft of what it takes to become a Master Grower. These are the Shining LGBTQ Stars of the Cannabis Community! On a personal note: When I was much younger I wasn’t seeking to find a man, fall in love and get married, but I did feel that if it that was my destiny to be married I should have standards. I prayed that this person be spiritual, kind, caring, intelligent, have goals, funny, vegetarian, 420 friendly, no alcohol and no cigarette smoking. Oh my goodness, we found each other in Santa Cruz and he was all those things But next time I’ll remember to pray that they be heterosexual! We did two things right: we loved each other and we had a son, and even though divorce came our way - I was lucky I married a gay man as he is the best father my son could ever hope for and the experience made me a better woman! My former spouse is still spiritual, kind, intelligent, caring, tries to be funny, and looks like a combination of Richard Gere and Anderson Cooper and he still honors me. So let us celebrate diversity every day, for all of us to be inclusive and have equal balance of mind and spirit to the LGBTQ community. May we continue to assist each other and to shine on and find the light within cannabis lifestyle.

Splendid Isolation
an Elevated Experience in a Sensory Deprivation Tank
The Sensory Deprivation Tank was developed in 1954 by medical practitioner and neuropsychiatrist John C. Lilly at the US National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). Lilly experimented with sensory deprivation, and often would combine floating with psychedelic drugs like LSD and Ketamine in addition to attempting to communicate with both dolphins and extraterrestrials. Sensory Deprivation is the practice of floating weightlessly in an ultra purified, skin temperature solution of dissolved Epsom salt within a light-free and sound resistant isolation floatation system. Isolation tank therapy is used to treat a variety of ailments and disorders, including: muscle tension, chronic pain, hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis and PMS. The first time I ever heard of isolation tanks was when I saw the 1980 movie “Altered States” as a kid, and they were recently featured in “Stranger Things” on Netflix. I personally went floating for two hours in a tank at Float Lab on the Venice Beach boardwalk after eating close to 175mg of top quality THC edibles to see what the effects would be and how the combination might aid in the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Here’s what happened! First I took my medicine - I ate two 50mg Chocolate Brownie Bites by Anakatrina’s Edibles about 30 min before I started and followed that with close to a third of a 300mg Apple Pie Cookie from Strictly Edibles five minutes before it began. I’d also been vaping on a W Vapes Banana Cookie Pen the entire ride there, so when we arrived I was fully medicated and good to go. After meeting “Crash”, the founder and owner of Float Lab, I was escorted to the introduction and prep room. Once I’d been advised of the process I was shown to my own tank room, took off my clothes, put in my ear plugs and took a shower using the organic body wash provided. Next I climbed into the tank, faced and closed the door and laid back into the darkness. My body stayed totally buoyant and thanks to the salt I really was floating on top of the water in what felt like wet and slippery zero gravity. It took a few moments for my body to stop drifting and settle, but when it did the sensation was kind of like sinking into a memory foam mattress made of spongy liquid. I’m pretty tall, just over six feet and have extra long arms too but once I stopped moving and wasn’t in contact with the sides or edges of the
tank the space started to feel infinite. There was no claustrophobic feeling, quite the opposite actually. And it was dark, really, really dark. A few times came when I seriously didn’t know if my eyes were open or closed and I definitely had some colorful visions of dancing light here and there, sometimes taking shapes and sometimes staying abstract. I continued to zone out in different waves and layers thanks to the combined effects of the floating and the edibles. When I did, it was very much like being in a very nice and serene dream. The earplugs and soundproof chamber made it quiet, extremely quiet. Every now and then the extreme quiet was interrupted by a loud and thunderous noise that I realized, over and over again, was the sound of my own rhythmic breathing. There was also a faint sound of singing that sounded tribal but clearly in an imaginary language that would get slightly louder before fading back out. My mind is rarely still, but the isolation let me experience a stillness and sense of serenity that I haven’t known very much, and not for a long time. It was wonderful and I was also acutely aware my own sense of self and what it truly felt like to be completely alone with just my own thoughts. I did a solid two hours and it literally seemed like less than ten minutes. My perception of time has never been so distorted and that’s one of the most interesting aspects of this journey. Floating in an isolation tank on edibles was a lot like getting high and taking a nice warm bath in total darkness while wearing earplugs - yes, it was relaxing but it was also so much more. It felt like going on a walkabout inside my own primal dreamscape. It felt like returning to the womb. It felt like being set adrift in the void of space, if the void of space was warm and wet and felt intensely safe. I’m highly recommending the experience. Please know your dose and don’t try this with too much THC. You may also want to start with just an hour and increase your time as you continue. More investigative research should be done, and I certainly intend to, so keep reading for more updates. I seriously want my own tank one day - it’s now number one on my wish list! Float Lab has a state of the art facility in Westwood to service all of your float therapy and isolation tank needs. Check them out online at: www..floatlab.com

Diversity Lacking in Maryland’s Medical Cannabis Market
Jack Paradise
Circuit Judge Barry Williams ruled that the process of granting medical cannabis cultivation licenses in Maryland be halted until June 2, 2017. The usual anti-marijuana opponents of medicinal cannabis weren’t behind the opposition this time, but it was actually other growers whose reasoning is that the licenses were unfairly issued for reasons that may be revealed to be disturbing and racially based. Of the 15 companies who were granted the preliminary approval to legally be cultivators of medical marijuana, none at all are led by African-Americans. The Cannabis Commission did not choose to rank Alternative Medicine Maryland among the top 15 companies seeking a license to grow. AMM, which is led by an African-American doctor from New York, filed a lawsuit last fall challenging the award process of The Commission. The Legislative Black Caucus, in addition to Alternative Medicine Maryland, claim the process disproportionately excludes owners who are people of color. The Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission awarded preliminary licenses to 15 different companies, all of which have white owners. The commission was required by state law to encourage participation by minorities and to seek to achieve ethnic, geographic and racial diversity when issuing licenses to medical cannabis growers. The commission used geographic diversity as a criteria for selection, but they did not consider or inquire as to the applicant’s ethnic or racial identities. At this time, only one final license has been granted in Maryland, and it was to Forward Gro, which is based in Stevensville. Chief Judge Mary Ellen Barbera ordered a stay on proceedings in Baltimore City Circuit Court. The stay from the Court of Appeals prevents Judge Williams from extending his order. The citizen-sponsored initiative prohibits growing cannabis in residential zones, authorizes and regulates medical marijuana dispensaries, and limits commercial cultivation sites to industrial and manufacturing zones with a permit issued by the city. Opponents said the measure doesn’t do enough to protect the community, while the supporters said Measure U will provide oversight and transparency. La Mesa rejected a similar ballot measure in 2012, and banned the cultivation and manufacturing of medical marijuana, and the operation of dispensaries.
