LETTER FROM THETEXT EDITOR HERE TEXT HERE

Photographer: Michael Vegas

Greetings my friends,

Edibles Magazine Issue 32

It’s National Woman's Month and we have some amazing stories to share this issue. If you're in the Las Vegas area March 26-28th our Founder and CEO, B Le Grand, will be speaking about CBD Infusions and cooking with cannabis at the Night Club & Bar Cannabis Expo. California is entering our third month of adult use recreational legalization - and it’s weird. There are new laws that will be requiring us to list the licensee numbers of advertisers moving forward, so look for that to start happening next month. Also - we got together with Buck Angel, Rebekka Armstrong and Leon Mostovoy for a really cool rooftop photo shoot and interview in downtown Los Angeles and here it is: Welcome to The Humanity Issue!

10

I really can’t say enough about how cool it was to work with these three, they're like rock stars. I was only twelve years old when Rebekka Armstrong appeared in Playboy as Miss September 1986 and I remember that! Buck Angel actually came out to the iO West Comedy Club in 2012 and performed in our Improv + Storytelling show “Glory Stories.” April Flores did too and coincidentally she’s a guest Issue No. 43 I Page 10

writer/reviewer in this issue and told us everything you need to know about Quim Rock Infused lubricant. Speaking of iO West, it was just shut down permanently so don’t accidentally try to see a show there - it’s gone and the obituary is in this very magazine. Sad facts but they need to be shared. We’ve got more cool stuff in this issue, including the news, reviews, interviews and recipes you keep coming back for, as well as contributions from Army Veteran and Animaniacs Alum Colin Wells, and a super stoney Black Panther movie review by DJ Reid 420. All the details you need about Operation Candy Crush are here, so is a brand new event guide that already features some very exciting things to plan on doing for 4/20. As always, smile at your budtender, tip your delivery driver, and know your dose. “Truth is not obliged to stick to the possibilities.”

US NEWS TEXT HERE Operation Candy Crush: CBD Case Dropped in Tennessee B. Le Grand On February 12, 2018 the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office raided 23 head shops, liquor stores and vape stores seizing CBD infused products, (gummies, vape cartridges, cash and more). Deputies padlocked their doors, forcing them to remain closed for four days. How did this all happen? A teenager brought home CBD infused edibles and his father, who was a member of law enforcement used his connections to incite Operation Candy Crush. It was an extremely calculated, highly organized sting raiding 23 stores simultaneously. The District Attorney’s office filed petitions to declare the businesses public nuisances and attempted to have them closed permanently. Additionally, Officials charged 21 store owners with felony drug charges. Tennessee has its own Schedule of Controlled Substances where in addition to cannabis qualifying as Schedule I Federally, it is categorized as Schedule VI in the state. Originally, Tennessee District Attorney Jennings J. Jones expressed great confidence in the case, stating in a press conference after the raids, “If you possess this without a prescription, you have broken the law... If you are selling this without a prescription or if you’re not a pharmacy selling it to someone with a prescription for it, you have broken the law.” Judge Royce Taylor dissolved the order to temporarily shut down the businesses, citing that industrial hemp falls under a different statute of classification and that the CBD products needed to be tested to determine if they were made from marijuana. In the end, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) was unable to prove the source of the cannabidiol, whether it came from industrial hemp or marijuana. Under a state pilot program, farmers can legally grow hemp in Tennessee. On February 28th, DA Jones announced the decision to drop all charges, in part blaming the limitation of the TBI forensic lab capabilities. Now there is confusion between the DA’s offices and the TBI as to who was responsible for the accusations of selling illegal CBD products. In a statement, Jones said his case was based on lab reports from the TBI, that were not “written properly." He now admits findings were not as conclusive as he once believed.

Edibles Magazine Issue 43

In response, the TBI insisted the limitation of their lab’s reports were always made clear to the DA and that any action he took after receiving them was of his own volition.

12

“It is inaccurate for the local stakeholders in these cases to assert they made decisions in this case unaware of the limits of our forensic work,” TBI spokesperson Josh DeVine said in an email Thursday. He continued, “In the midst of this process, we clearly explained – in detail – the limitations of our analysis to all stakeholders. We did so to ensure they fully knew that, though we could identify CBD, we were not able to identify its origin. During the recent news conference on these cases, General Jones acknowledged himself that a substance being identified as a particular schedule does not make

it inherently illegal. The circumstances of the possession or transfer – as determined by the local law enforcement agency and interpreted by the District Attorney General – make something ‘illegal’. Again, to be clear: TBI lab reports objectively determine the compound present, but in no way are statements of compound origin, circumstances of possession, or guilt or innocence. Though we identified the substance and the relevant schedule, we made no determination about the legality of the substance or the circumstance in Rutherford County. That was a decision solely made — as in all cases — by the local agency and District Attorney General.” The motion to dismiss the indictments clearing the store owners’ records, doesn’t compensate for the damage and loss of business incurred by the unlawful raids. Kevin Latta, the attorney for the owner of Vapesboro, the store that served as the backdrop for the announcement of Candy Crush, says this all could have been avoided instead of sending officers in with masks, guns, and padlocks. “There has been some wisdom in neighboring judicial districts where attorney generals have done things like communication instead of intimidation and they have received one hundred percent compliance for the cost of a postage stamp for the untold tens of thousands of dollars here in Rutherford County was unable to accomplish at the end of Candy Crush,” said Latta. Enchanted Planet owner Lewis Berbert says, “We’ve been here in Middle Tennessee for more than 25 years.” All of a sudden his eclectic store was raided, padlocked, and he was thrown in jail. A thief broke into the Last Stop Market during the time it was under order to remain closed. Store clerk Jacklyn Ryder told a local TV news station she was working when the store was raided. Deputies denied her request to set the store’s alarm before they left, she says. “Our store was left unalarmed for four days while we were closed down because of this,” said Ryder. The thief stole more than $600 from a change machine and some beer, forcefully breaking in through the store’s back door. The store received extensive damage in the break-in. Ryder said the store’s owner may file suit, a sentiment she agrees with. “I feel not only him. I feel like every store that suffered should file a lawsuit because they have families too,” Ryder said. “I went four days, that’s about $400 out of my check that I don’t have because of some allegation that’s not true.” Other store owners say that they are also planning a civil suit in response to the raids and store closures. Throughout their ordeal, the businesspeople have stuck together, pledging not to plea bargain. “This has caused an enormous cost to all the store owners,” store owner Stacey Hamilton said. “I don’t think they’ll apologize in nearly as public a way as they condemned us as drug dealers.”

We here at Edibles List Magazine were recently fortunate enough to get together with three of the most extraordinary people working in the cannabis and hemp infused product industry: Buck Angel, Rebekka Armstrong and Leon Mostovoy. They met with us in downtown Los Angeles along with photographer Michael Vegas for a fully infused afternoon of interviews, photographs and fun. Thank you for joining us for “The Humanity Issue."

Buck Angel is a transsexual adult film performer, who is also a producer and motivational speaker as well as a cannabis entrepreneur and advocate. He is the founder of Buck Angel Entertainment, a media production company. A female-to-male trans man, Buck received the 2007 AVN Award for Transsexual Performer of the Year. He now works as an advocate, educator, lecturer and writer. In 2012, Angel began to transition from the porn industry to sex education and also began touring the world speaking about human sexuality. He coined the phrase "it's not what's between your legs that defines you." Angel originally began to produce and star in his own line of adult-erotica themed films under the new studio name, Buck Angel Entertainment. At this time he already identified as male and always presented himself that way, but had not had any bottom genital surgery and still had a vulva, so he promoted these films titling himself, "The Dude With a Pussy."

struggling for years with hard drugs and alcohol it was enlightening for Buck to realize that he had even more to teach and share, and that using cannabis could help him help others a great deal. Rebekka Armstrong

Rebekka Lynn Armstrong is an American HIV/AIDs activist and former model and pro bodybuilder. She was Playboy Playmate of the Month for September 1986. Eight years later, she was the first Playmate to publicly announce that she is HIVpositive. On September 27th of 2017, Hugh Hefner passed away at the age of 91. A controversial person during

the majority of his career, at the time of his death there weren’t a lot of women coming out in public and saying positive things about Hefner, but Armstrong was.

She confided, “Hugh Hefner saved my life." During our interview she went on to tell us, “Hugh Hefner offered me an amazing opportunity to appear on the pages of Playboy and I became Miss September 1986. In 1989, I was diagnosed with HIV and soon after went public with having an AIDS diagnosis, Hef, Cindy Rakowitz and the Playboy Foundation helped me form a tour of Colleges and universities "Playboy's Sex On Campus" to educate the younger sexually active generation. and helped me in the fight against AIDS! After becoming very ill with AIDS related complications I became very focused on how the virus affected my body. I was determined to fight even harder! I began bodybuilding as a safety net against wasting away and competed around the country and yes, Hef and Playboy supported me again! Thank you so much Hef for giving me a voice. You are truly an amazing man. I will always remember all that you did and mean to me.” In September of 1994, The Advocate (The National Gay and Lesbian News Magazine) published a cover story titled, "Portrait of an HIV Positive Lesbian Centerfold: The Naked Truth about Playboy Playmate Rebekka Armstrong." It’s now been over twenty years since that story ran and when asked if she’d like to elaborate at all on where she now feels she is with her sexuality, she responded: “I'm a sexual human being. I've been in relationships with men, women and trans. It's not an issue for me. I feel very strongly that if you are attracted to someone or are in love with someone it doesn't matter what sex or gender they are. I'm very happily married to my best

When her physical suffering was at the absolute worst, close friends of hers told her to go to the park in West Hollywood and look for “The Marijuana Man." She didn’t know who she was supposed to be looking for, but was told he would find her, so she went to the park and waited and waited. Rebekka wasn’t sure if she was in the right place and wanted to leave but no longer had the strength and it was then that he appeared: “The Marijuana Man." He gave her brownies and flower, then rolled her some joints. He gave her a small pipe and showed her everything she needed to know so she could self-medicate and helped walk her home. The cannabis made her body and mind feel better almost immediately. She ate, she slept, she smoked more and repeated all of the above for the first time in a long time. Now clean and sober, Armstrong doesn’t currently feel the need to medicate with cannabis, but said that if she ever did she wouldn’t hesitate and feels like it’s by far the healthiest treatment you can use for that type of pain, nausea and discomfort. She now has her own line of CBD topical treatments called “Bekki’s Botanicals” and is helping others to treat their own pain.

VETERANS CORNER

Veterans Walk & Talk with Cannabis Colin Wells

Had I not found what cannabis can do for my pain and PTSD, I very likely would have ended up a statistic. I couldn’t stand the terrible side effects my VA prescriptions were causing, so in 2015, I completely shut myself off from the world. I nearly lost everything. But with the help of cannabis and nature I was able to go from homeless and alienated, to thriving and happy. I did the work and soon learned to accept myself through sharing my experiences with others. Talking seemed to lift the burden. Now...I am a cannabis success story. As soon as my mind came back to me, my first thought was to share my love of cannabis and the outdoors with any veteran that would join me. In early 2017, I founded @VeteransWalkAndTalk. My goal was to form a universal gathering of loving veterans who would walk and talk once a week. Cannabis has helped me handle my PTSD and pain. It has done the same for every single veteran that has walked with us. Cannabis is our catalyst, it is not everything, it is our way back to everything. Cannabis and a walk in the woods amongst your brothers and sisters is among the best therapy any veteran can have. We now hike every Sunday all around Southern California with anywhere from four to twelve veterans; many of which live in transitional housing. We also do community outreach several times a month and plan on becoming a non profit in the next 6 months. Canndescent, Buddha Co., Beard Bros, Fatty’s Prerolls, 99 High Tide and Too Stoned HiCal are the chief sponsors of @ Veteranswalkandtalk. Place drained chickpeas in a blender and add red peppers, tahini, lemon juice, garlic, cumin, paprika and canna olive oil. Process until smooth. Season, to taste, with salt and black pepper. Transfer to a serving bowl and top with parsley. Place pita triangles on a large baking sheet, greasing the surface first. Season the pita triangles with garlic salt before baking. Bake 6 to 8 minutes, until golden brown and crisp. Serve toasted pita triangles alongside hummus. Garnish with parsley, paprika and top with canna olive oil. Alternatives to recipe include leaving out the tahini sauce for sesame allergies and replacing with more canna olive oil, or serve pita triangles untoasted for a softer palette. 420 Cold Press Coffee

Ingredients: 1 cup (4 ounces / 113 grams) whole coffee beans 4 cups water 3 tablespoons cannabis infused coconut oil Steviol Glycosides (see GLG LifeTech's Ad on Page 61) Special Equipment: Coffee or spice grinder 1 1/2 quart (or larger) glass, ceramic, or plastic container (I use a 2-quart canning jar) Small strainer Cheesecloth or cotton flour sack cloth Bottle or mason jar, for storing your cold-brew Instructions:

Grind the coffee beans on the coarsest setting on your grinder, or in short 1-second pulses in a spice grinder. The grounds should look like coarse cornmeal, not fine powder. You should have just under 1 cup of grounds. Transfer the coffee grounds to the container you're using to make the cold brew. Pour the water over top, then add the canna coconut oil. Stir gently with a long-handled spoon to make sure the grounds are thoroughly saturated with water. Cover the jar with a lid or a small plate to protect it from dust and bugs. Let the coffee steep for about 12 hours. The coffee can be left on the counter or refrigerated; steeping time is the same. Line a small strainer with cheesecloth or flour sack cloth and place over a large measuring cup or bowl. Pour the coffee through the strainer. Transfer the coffee to a small bottle or jar and store in the fridge for up to a week. Dilute the coffee with as much water or milk as you prefer. Serve over ice or warm for a few minutes in the microwave. If you normally have your coffee ground when you buy it, ask for it to be ground on a coarse setting. You'll need a scant cup (or 4 ounces) for this recipe. You can also make cold-brew coffee in a French press. Steep the coffee overnight, then press to separate the grounds from the coffee. Transfer the coffee to a bottle or jar for longer storage.

Easy & Potent Canna-Coconut Oil Ingredients: 64 oz.coconut oil 1 oz. of lightly ground cannabis bud, or trim Special equipment: Container with lid, Twine, Glass or ceramic bowl, refrigerator and heat safe, CrockPot or any brand slow cooker, Spatula Knife, Cheesecloth, Baking sheet or oven pan Instructions: Preheat oven to 215 degrees Fahrenheit. Buds should be in small pieces. Spread evenly over the surface of the pan and cover with aluminum foil. Bake for 15-20 minutes. This is a preliminary step called decarboxylation: heating the cannabis to release active natural substances, making it much stronger.

The cannabis will be light brown, dried out, and the active ingredients will be concentrated. Pour the coconut oil and then decarboxylated cannabis into the CrockPot. For a lower dose canna infusion, add less cannabis to get a less potent ratio of cannabis to butter. Keep the mixture simmering on low for 7 hours stirring occasionally. Make sure it doesn’t reach a boil. Then remove from heat and let it cool enough to safely touch. Strain out plant material with cheesecloth. Tie your cheesecloth with twine to make a lid covering your glass or ceramic bowl or other container. Carefully pour the hot mixture into your bowl while straining it with the cheese cloth to remove all plant substance. You can also use a permanent coffee filter or mesh for straining. Remove the cheesecloth. Cover the mixture and place it in the refrigerator for hardening.

If you’re looking for something tasty and potent to medicate you during the work week and into the weekend, look no further than Yi-Lo products. Their baked goods, including a pumpkin cream cheese cupcake and a delicious cheesecake bite are not vegan at all, nor are they gluten free, but they are possibly some of the most delicious tasting medicated edibles I’ve ever put into my mouth. With barely a hint of any cannabis flavor at all, these treats are moist, flavorful, and felt infused with more than just THC and CBD magic, but possibly with that something extra that only products made with love can be.

For an afternoon pick me up that will make your mid day work anxieties melt away, I’d reach for one of these delectable morsels right around 3pm to pair with my mid day coffee break. When the weekend rolls around however, and it’s time to make my sweetie something special to go with our #SelfCareSunday brunch, I’ll reach for one of YiLo’s tasty fruit juice cocktails or “potions." These come in a variety of flavors including blueberry, orange, and mango, and are full of vitamins and nutrients. Be aware though, these can contain up to 280 mg of THC in a single serving--so be sure to read the label and check the color of the cap before dosing, otherwise your Sunday could turn into a very unproductive nap day--which may be just what the doctor ordered depending on how your work week went. Bottom line, Yi-Lo products are out of this world delicious, super potent and effective. To find out even more, visit their website at www.yilo.com.

With most topicals, cannabinoids can’t breach the bloodstream so even when they contain active THC, they still won’t induce intense feelings of being stoned like one would experience from smoking cannabis or eating edibles. Topicals like Pharma-C Spray Away are most often chosen for treating localized pain relief, inflammation, muscle soreness, and tension as well as a wide spectrum of other benefits, from psoriasis, dermatitis, and itching to headaches and cramping. This spray on topical works extremely well and has been effective every single time I’ve used it treating pains in my neck, back and also relieved aching caused by shoulder subluxations and stress fractures in my legs.

Quim Rock, is a one of a kind intimate oil that helped me achieve a mind blowing orgasm. I'm here to share my experience with you. My partner and I set aside some time to try Quim Rock for ourselves. Having been in the sex industry for a combined 17 years, we've both been exposed to many different types of lubricants and pleasure related products. Only recently have I been thinking about the chemicals and additives contained in products aimed at pleasure. This is the first product I have seen that explicitly prioritizes vaginal health. This intimate oil uses the "natural powers of cannabis and the antiseptic properties of tea tree oil" to deliver a truly unique experience with health benefits as well. We followed the directions and applied the forest green colored oil to my vulva and surrounding areas and put a little inside my vagina. The instructions stated to wait 20 minutes for Quim Rock to take full effect,

so we went along with our usual foreplay routine. The first thing we noticed about Quim Rock is that there are only a few ingredients - all of which I am familiar with, am already using and can actually pronounce. Quim Rock is made with coconut oil, tea tree oil and essential oils which give it a fresh, floral scent that we instantly loved. It smells wonderful. After a few minutes, I noticed a cool feeling that slowly became an intense sensation coming from deep within me. That deep aching inside could only mean one thing… We followed that feeling and before long I was able to have the most explosive, full body orgasm because of Quim Rock. Quim Rock has two formulas to choose from: Curious and Sensitive. I recommend buying both so you are able to customize the ratio to achieve the type of orgasm you want to have. I found my magical combination using equal amounts of both formulas at the same time. I firmly believe that if more people were having more orgasms, the world would be a better place. THC Design Pre-Rolls Siouxsie Q

When departing on a stressful outing, such as meeting your partner’s entire family for the first time--it’s important to be prepared. Lately I’ve been carrying around the super handy and adorable tin cases from THC Design, filled with classic, estate grown prerolls, and I made sure I had at least one with me as my partner and I headed south for Sunday brunch with, you guessed it, his entire family. Some families are more open about cannabis use than others, but regardless, I didn’t want to be flashing my weed around during my very first meet and greet with potential future in-laws. Still, I was not about to do this anxiety inducing relationship step while relying on the support of dacquaris alone. Thankfully, the packaging on these pre-rolls is sturdy, modern, and even reusable. It’s also expensive looking, and discreet enough that one might mistake it for a makeup palette or a box of high end sweets. Before we took the plunge, my partner and I sampled the hybrid flavor of the THC Design pre-roll which was smooth and tasty and left us both feeling bright, confident and chatty, but not too stoned at all--perfect. We linked arms, I touched up my lipstick, and we crossed the threshold into suburban family land. Combined with the dacquaris, two of the hybrid pre-rolls carried us through the intergenerational backyard bar-b-que affair -- I successfully avoided awkward subject matter including politics, religion and what I do for a living, and answered questions about my background with grace and modesty. We made a swift but warm exit just after the meal and made it home in time to avoid traffic, sharing a well deserved, mellow indica version of the pre-roll on the way, which gave us a nice manageable buzz in spite of our very high tolerances. Later that night, my partner’s brother called to confirm from his, non THC Design pre-roll infused perspective, the visit had also gone off without a hitch. Overall, a triumph. Prayers For Sophie Jack Paradise

Sophie Ryan was born on October 3rd, 2012, perfectly healthy weighing in at 8 pounds, 7.4 ounces. Her birth had zero complications. On June 20, 2013, Sophie had her first MRI scan after nystagmus, shaking of the eyeball, showed up in her left eye. June 23rd, at eight and a half months old, Sophie was diagnosed with a low grade, Optic Pathway Glioma brain tumor. Since it is a slow growing tumor, chemo was never meant to get rid of it, and doctors said if they saw even minimal shrinkage it would be considered a huge success. After creating a Facebook page called “Prayers for Sophie,” a friend on Facebook put Sophie’s parents, Josh and Tracy Ryan, in touch with Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein, who were filming a documentary about how cannabis oils kill cancer in pediatric patients. They worked hard with the top oil makers and experts in California. Sophie has been on high concentrated THC and CBD cannabis oil since she started chemo in October of 2013. Despite several rounds of chemo, Sophie continued to gain weight and has a great quality of life despite having chemo once a week with short breaks from time to time. Her hair has grown back, she is advancing developmentally, and despite the blood transfusions she has required she is otherwise very happy and healthy. After 13 months of chemo and high doses of cannabis oil, Sophie’s brain tumor was about 85 percent gone, and a massive cyst that had formed was about 90 percent gone. Sophie’s parents were told that Sophie would go blind in her left eye and her right eye would likely be compromised. Because of the shrinkage from the use of cannabis oil, they have saved her vision. After an eye exam her vision was reported to be, “That of a normal two year old.” Through SavingSophie.org, Tracy and Josh hope to pay it forward to those who are now in the same financial troubles they once found themselves in. CannaKids’ Honey Gold extraction process is lead by a team of PhD scientists that specialize in organic chemistry. Purified raw cannabinoids are first collected via a solvent-free process, purified to remove any unwanted plant matter, and are then later infused with a rich terpene blend to create a unique final product. Extremely potent cannabinoid content provides a product with excellent bioavailability, and is free from any unnecessary plant material. The final product is a concentrate that contains a profile similar to that of the flowers of the plant, while remaining free of residual solvents and unwanted contaminants. Inspired by strain profiles with every input monitored for purity and quality, concentrates provided by CannaKids represents cutting edge scientific knowledge and cannabis insight in every package. BLAZED MOVIE REVIEW TEXT HERE

The Black Panther Party: A Blazed Blerd Movie Review DJ Reid 420

Edibles Magazine Issue 43

Wakanda? More like Wakanda weed do you need to smoke before watching Black Panther? Do yourself a favor and watch Black Panther as many times as you can, with as many black people as you can. In fact try to watch this movie with many different kinds of black people. Watch Black Panther with Africans and watch it with African Americans. Watch Black Panther with Black Democrats and if you can find one, watch it with a Black Republican, they need to watch Black Panther more than anybody. I've watched Black Panther twice. First with a white audience after smoking a good indica. For that screening I actually fell asleep during some of the exposition. The second time I watched Black Panther in a predominantly black movie theater, it was like going to the Black Super Bowl. We had a party and I wasn't the only one who stank of good bud.

48

During the screening I couldn't help but keep my eye on the only two white people in the movie theater. A Dad and his sixteen year old son, sat right in front of me. The teenager had an Avengers T-Shirt on, so I imagine he dragged his father to the nearest movie theater not really knowing what they had walked into. The two white gentlemen sat quietly and respectively while the rest of us had some Church of Wakanda. The crowd became so jubilant the white folk were obviously surprised by our enthusiasm. In the film when Martin Freeman asks if Danai Gurira spoke English, her response was "When she wants to." At that point the theater exploded with exclamations of "That's right!" and "You tell him sista'!' That's

when I could clearly hear the older white man say to his son, "They realize this is only movie, right?" Yeah.. It's just a movie, but the themes are real. This movie is obviously a symbolic match up of Barack Obama vs Nelson Mandela. Duh! Chadwick Boseman is T'Challa, Africa's greatest leader fighting against Michael B Jordan who plays Erik Killmonger. Wait a second, check his birth certificate, because Killmonger was born in the Motherland. And now he wants to put weapons in the hands of every black person on Earth. Sean Hannity's worst nightmare. My edible really started to kick in when T'Challa is given the secret herb potion that gives him superpowers and vision. That sounds like the real reason to visit Wakanda. They got the best weed.

For Black Panther, I would recommend a sativa, but you might be tempted to take another smoke break. I would suggest taking along an edible to eat in the theater during the opening credits. It should start kicking in right after the second trial by combat and you'll be sure to be ready to watch the final act in full on Panther vision. Lastly I want to take a second to thank Reginald Hudlin. Sure everybody is talking about Ryan Coogler as the visionary, but if you read the comics you know that most of the story is based on the writings of film director Reginald Hudlin, who first directed House Party in 1990. Very fitting because if you see this movie in the right headspace, Black Panther will blow the roof off this MF. DJ Reid 420 is a Hollywood based writer and comedian. He’s also the creator of Black Spider-Man, the “Web” series. www.blackspiderman.net

CANNABIS TESTIMONY

How I Used Cannabis to Help Me Quit Lyrica Richard Bell

I went cold turkey after about 5 years using 400mg of Lyrica per day. Lyrica is a medication used to treat nerve and muscle pain, including fibromyalgia and can also treat seizures.I was prescribed Lyrica after my doctor confessed that gabapentin is a garbage drug. Full disclosure, I am a quadriplegic at the C-5/6 level. I was prescribed the drug for neuropathic pain. I decided to quit taking it after I felt like it wasn't helping with the pain any longer. Then conveniently, I forgot to fill my prescription for the weekend and thought fuck it, I'm done. After about two weeks, I felt the wrath of that decision. My spasticity went through the roof. I have to now get straps to tie my legs and waist to my wheelchair or I will flip out of it. Ironically that only lasted about a couple of months. Then about six months after that, they came back just as bad as ever. This time, they started to mess with my heart. I was admitted to the ER with Atrial fibrillation (a-fib) and tachycardia. A-fib is a quivering or irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) that can lead to blood clots. They tried to stop and start my heart to get a regular rhythm back to no avail. During the five days in the Critical Care Unit, they attempted a cardiac ablation, but couldn't do that because of an enormous blood clot in my filter. They sent me home on beta blockers to help with the a-fib, but the pills gave me pneumonia. I then knew I had to go homeopathic. I started taking magnesium and Hawthorn for my heart, and cannabis for everything else. CBD helps a lot to soften the blow from some of the side effects. Like others, I do not sleep. I never really was much of a sleeper even before all of this. I do have the edibles to help me sleep. I'm up to about 70mg of THC at night time. I have to wait a couple of hours still before I can lay down because of spasms. If you are new to edibles, please do not consume any more than 5mg the first time, meaning within the initial 24 hours of consumption - Trust me on that. Over time, you will get a better idea of your tolerance. I also smoke Indica at night, and Sativa during the day. On difficult days I snack on lower dose edibles to keep my spasms under control. Smoking is a more immediate delivery. Eating takes a lot longer to activate, but lasts longer. Even though CBD is another aspect of cannabis, it can be used as an antidote if you accidentally get too high on THC. It's always a good idea to have CBD around as a tincture, or maybe a Vape pen. It's been two years since I went cold turkey, and unfortunately I still suffer from a lot of the same side effects. This has not stopped me from moving on with my life. I'm able to think now. My artwork is much more detailed and vibrant. Even though I may have a bad day, or series of days, my good days are fantastic. Hopefully, my story is a warning to not go cold turkey. Ask DR. MIKE about

OPIOIDS VS. CANNABIS who receive opioids for pain quickly build tolerances to the drugs. People become physically dependent on them due a condition known as opioid induced hypoalgesia, which is nerdy way of saying opioids reduce your pain tolerance. So basically when you take these drugs everything in your body is going to hurt more when you are not on them.

MICHAEL HELLER

Edibles Magazine Issue 43

Q. WHAT ARE OPIOIDS?

54

A. Opioids are either synthetic or natural drugs that bind to your opioid receptors that provide pain relief and euphoria. They were originally derived from the poppy plant and include opium, morphine and heroin. Later synthetic opioids such as OxyContin were created by Big Pharma. Q. WHY ARE OPIOIDS SO BAD? A. Opioids are addictive. Patients

Q. WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF OPIOIDS? A. Opioid induced hypoalgesia (SUPER PAIN SENSITIVITY), dysphoria, irritability, sweating, nausea, rhinorrhea, tremors, vomiting and respiratory depression (REDUCED ABILITY TO BREATH!!). Some serious withdrawal symptoms and mental health side effects occur when painkillers are stopped, depression and insomnia are very common. The most dangerous part of opioids are their drug interactions. When combined with other depressants like alcohol they can be fatal. In 2016 opioids and heroin claimed more lives than firearms or car crashes.

ASK DR. MIKE

A. RIP: Elvis, Prince, Heath Ledger, River Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Chris Farley, Janis Joplin, Hank Williams, Sigmund Freud. Q. HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE DIED FROM CANNABIS OVERDOSE? A. 0!!! You can’t overdose on cannabis, YAY! Q. WHY IS THERE AN OPIOID EPIDEMIC TODAY? A. The treatment of chronic pain with opioids is to blame. In 1996 Purdue Pharma Inc. introduced OxyContin and marketed it as a less addictive/safer alternative to previous opioids. Later this company was criminally charged by the federal government for obscuring clinical data and misbranding the drug. Following this, prescribing opioids has become more restrictive and highly regulated. It’s too late however, the damage is already done, people are already addicted. With a reduced supply of pain pills people have turned to black market heroin as a cheaper alternative. Q. CAN CANNABIS SOLVE THIS EPIDEMIC? A. Research says yes! A

study by the Minnesota Department of Health showed that 63 percent of patients using opioids for chronic pain significantly reduced or eliminated their use of these drugs after 6 months of cannabis use. Another study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that opioid overdoses were 25 percent lower in states that had legal cannabis. h t t p s : / / w w w. c a t o . o r g / blog/yet-another-studypoints-potential-cannabisreducing-opioid-use Q. HOW IS CANNABIS USED TO TREAT OPIOID DRUG ADDICTION? A. Harm reduction, a strategy practiced in addiction clinics. The physical withdrawal symptoms from stopping opioids or heroin cold turkey can be very painful, even fatal. Traditionally methadone is used to wean people off of these harder drugs. Some clinics have begun using cannabis as an alternative to wean addicts off of opioids because of its ability relieve withdrawal symptoms. Q. WHY YOU SHOULD USE CANNABIS INSTEAD OF OPIOIDS? A. It treats pain, has benign side effects, it’s non addictive, it’s accessible, it’s safer, it’s tasty!

ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

RIP iO West:

An Obituary for an Infamous Hollywood Comedy Theatre

Patrick Ian Moore

In 1997, a companion theater to the iO Chicago, originally called "Improv Olympic West” opened in Los Angeles. In 2001, The International Olympic Committee legally threatened the theater over its use of the name so it was officially changed to the abbreviated “iO West." On February 13th, 2018, iO Chicago Co-Founder Charna Halpern announced via twitter that the theater would be closing on February 24th, and sadly it did just that. The history of cannabis use in the Hollywood comedy scene is legendary and it flourished at iO West like nowhere else. I took long form improv classes at iO West from 2007 to 2008. In 2009 I was cast on a house improv team, a mainstage sketch show and started working there as one of the technical directors. I also started doing stand up comedy at iO West and began creating my own shows including: Hammerpsace, ComicBook Live and Glory Stories. It was Halloween night 2008 the 1st time I ever got high there and it transformed my relationship to the space. I was with Dr. God’s Sean Cowhig, Cagematch host Joscar Joe Herrera and the dearly departed Bryan Burgess. Sean showed me how best to get high in the lighting booth and I passed the knowledge on to Ken Breese. Often the sessions were referred to as “safety meetings,” especially amongst the interns and staff. I smoked weed there with the late great pro wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper as well as Oscar winner Jordan Peele. It’s where and how I met most of my friends in LA including the Night Cap’s Stacy Rumaker and Black Spider-Man’s Derek Reid. We medicated before, during and after shows. We smoked in the office, the green room and on every stage. During Festival Week we kept special edibles in the refrigerator and if an office manager happened to accidentally throw them away someone fished them out of the trash at midnight. We even got stoned with celebrities who are famous for being clean and sober so I won’t mention them here. So, “Yes, And” Improv comedy will continue in Los Angeles and it will always go great with good cannabis. Some amazingly generous theatres have taken in the orphaned shows and students of Hollywood, so please do what you can to support The Westside Comedy Theater, The PACK and Second City Hollywood. The citizen-sponsored initiative prohibits growing cannabis in residential zones, authorizes and regulates medical marijuana dispensaries, and limits commercial cultivation sites to industrial and manufacturing zones with a permit issued by the city. Opponents said the measure doesn’t do enough to protect the community, while the supporters said Measure U will provide oversight and transparency. La Mesa rejected a similar ballot measure in 2012, and banned the cultivation and manufacturing of medical marijuana, and the operation of dispensaries.
