LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Greetings my friends,
420Nurses). It was an amazing time and we saw the most creative costumes you could ever imagine. We also went to Utah Cann which was a bit of a culture shock but we did meet some wonderful people there as well and were able to breathe some incredibly clean mountain air for a few days.

Fall is fully on us now. Halloween is over and the time for an infused Thanksgiving is coming up, and this our 50th issue of Edibles! We’re celebrating by focusing on Visionaries, in art, technology, entertainment and cannabis of course. There’s features on Elon Musk, Kristen Bell, Las Vegas, Malaysia and more. The painting of Elon by artist Richard Bell on the front cover was debuted at the Los Angeles Comic Con this year where we had an Edibles Magazine booth and panel for the second year in a row. We were very honored to be invited back and really want to thank everyone who dropped by our booth to say hi or came to our Cannabis and Pop Culture panel featuring Rob Van Dam and ChaCha Vavoom (of the
Here in Los Angeles we continue to wait to hear about the decisions on licensing and aren’t sure how long it will be before those companies who’ve applied will be able to be operational and doing business. By the time you read this, voting time will be over so I wonder what will happen. The Fran Drescher Master Class Health Summit we attended in downtown Los Angeles was illuminating. It was a little like listening to Doomsday prophets but everyone was optimistic enough that we were left feeling hopeful but cautious. I’m somewhat terrified of Gluten and Fluoride now and have switched to an all natural citrus toothpaste and a completely wheat-free diet. Fran was really sweet and it was great seeing her flourishing in her element and doing work she’s so passionate about. November means it time for MJ Biz Con in Las Vegas and that’s always a good time.

the artwork by Richard Bell on the cover of this month’s issue, it’s available on our website. Tesla is also the stock we’ve highlighted in the Stocked Pots and Pot Stocks section since it gained so much attention after Elon’s blunt smoking adventure on the Joe Rogan Experience. You can also read Richard’s story in this issue, as well as all the great news, reviews and recipes you expect. Speaking of recipes, they’re gluten-free this month, mostly thanks to the Health Summit. Still infused so give them a chance - it’s just an experiment and we hope you enjoy them. If you finish the Canna Crossword in the back, post a pic of the finished puzzle to Instagram and tag us - the first person who does wins an awesome prize. As always, smile at your budtender, tip your delivery driver, and know your dose. “Truth is not obliged to stick to possibilities.”

POT STOCKS & STOCKED POTS: TESLA & BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP B. Le Grand
September 27th, the US Securities and Exchange Commission filed a lawsuit against Tesla alleging that Elon Musk made “false and misleading statements” as the head of a public company in his series of August tweets about considering taking Tesla private. September 30th Elon Musk settled the lawsuit, with a fine of $20million dollars allowing him to remain the CEO of Tesla, but resign as the Chairman of the Board. He recently made comments that he is now “The Nothing of Tesla,” removing any mention of his association with Tesla in his online bios.
Tesla reported Quarter III profits that sent their stock price surging to a $346 (at the time of writing this article). What’s interesting about Tesla is that if you had invested $1,000 in Tesla in 2010 you would have had $22,327 as of August 7, 2018. With Tesla having accomplished its original mission of making electric vehicles the norm and widely accepted as cool or elite, it’s future projections of earnings with their electric trucks show great promise. With the leaps and bounds Tesla has made since it’s start, we think Tesla's on track to be the next Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A - a Warren Buffet Company), which is trading at $323,935.00 per share, as of November 2018), especially since Elon Musk announced he has reduced his workweeks from 120 hour to 90 hours a week. In Honour of Elon Musk's Roots, We Present a South African Butternut Squash Soup Recipe Ingredients: 7 cups butternut squash 2 large brown onions, finely chopped 3 small garlic cloves, finely chopped or 1 elephant EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com
garlic clove 2 ½ cup chicken stock 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 1/16 cup water 3 small strong green chilies or 1 large jalapeno, no pips, finely chopped 1 tablespoon melted canna butter 1 1/16 cup fresh pouring cream Directions: Peel and pip the butternuts, and cut it into about 5cm square chunks. Peel and chop the onions quite finely. Chop the garlic very finely, or push through a garlic press. Halve the Jalapeno pepper or green chillies and scrape out all the pips. Chop the green flesh very finely. Put the onions, garlic and chillies into the melted canna butter in a saucepan on a moderate heat and cook until the onions are soft and transparent. Add the lemon juice and chicken stock and stir until well mixed. Add the water and the cubes of butternut, and simmer until the soup is thick and all the ingredients are well blended together, about 1 hour. Liquidise with a food processor. Serve hot. Swirl a tablespoon or two of fresh cream into the centre of each bowl of soup just before serving.

This issue’s pot stock isn’t really a cannabis stock, moreover that Tesla’s CEO was seen smoking weed online. August 7th, then CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk, announced he was taking Tesla private, on Twitter, at $420 a share. We thought it a bit ironic he chose that number, and the stock closed at a 6 months high at $379 a share. Exactly a month later on September 7th, Elon Musk smoked a blunt on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, live streamed for the world on Youtube. The stock price fell to $263 its lowest recorded low since April.

My uncle, Raymond Howell, was the artist of the family. I remember helping him set up at shows, going to gallery events, and visiting his work in museums. At this point in my life, I never even considered drawing let alone painting a picture. My creative outlet was music. I started playing piano at the age of three by ear. By the time I was in high school, I was playing for different groups and in jazz bands. I took piano lessons on and off throughout my childhood, but never could grasp the concept of reading music. I didn’t find out until later in life that having dyslexia was the reason I couldn’t make out the notes on the paper.

Whenever I had free time, or a break between classes, I would continue to draw in charcoal. But I still didn’t take drawing as seriously as my coursework. While looking into which medical schools I might want to attend, I found out quickly that the cost was absolutely prohibitive. I still had to make a living, so I segued into IT work.
I feel like I could not have made a better career decision. I started out as a field technician for Rockwell International. I had to work in the bay area for about a year. During that time I would spend the evenings with my uncle Raymond painting. He did an excellent job at mentoring me. My life changed abruptly on November 10, 2002, when I rolled my fancy sports car off a freeway ramp onto a transition road, and hitting a big rig before rolling to a stop. I knew right away that I had broken my neck. I was rushed to USC hospital, flatlined twice, and was put on lifesupport for three months. They successfully replaced my cervical 6 vertebrate during surgery. After three months, I was transferred to Rancho Los Amigos Rehabilitation Center in Downey California. I really couldn’t move anything so my rehab was more social and educational. I was released to a new apartment with my wife three months later. Together we continue to try to figure out how to maneuver in the medical system to get the help I need. The social aspect of my therapy was the most impactful. I would watch other quadriplegics do amazing things, and would say there’s nothing to stop me from doing the same. They sent me home with a smorgasbord of meditations. I could not function cognitively.
Rancho Los Amigos has an annual art show. A friend of mine asked me to attend. I really didn’t want to go because I didn’t want to see any work done by disabled people. I figured it would be an applause festival for mediocre work. Boy was I wrong. That show was one of the best I had seen. The art was absolutely incredible. That night, my friend told me he wanted to see my work in the next show. That certainly lit a fire under my ass. I went out and bought a bunch of painting supplies. Then I had to figure out how to use them. Not having any hand dexterity was an issue. I quickly learned that shoving the brush into my wheelchair gloves would work the same as if I had working hands. That first show was liberating. From there I met other artists outside of the community who came to appreciate my work. They would tell me about other art shows in the area. I eventually applied for the Beverly Hills Art Show and got in. My third time attending that show, I won 3rd place in the painting category. My art career has flourished. I was granted a fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center. I am now in a couple of galleries in Los Angeles. And I do differentshowsthroughouttheyear.Istill continue to do the Art of Rancho show. My creative mind was completely shut down. I quit taking medications one at a time. The last hold out was Lyrica. My spinal cord injury causes me to live in excruciating pain. I was terrified of quitting that meditation. I found that Cannabis would replace everything I was on. Now, I smoke flower, use a CBD tincture, and eat edibles at night. That is the winning combination for me. Over the years I became very active in the disabled community. I even founded a nonprofit with a few buddies of mine called the Pushrim Foundation. We did a series of podcasts interviewing different individuals in the community that were doing extraordinary things and medical professionals .

1. CANNABIS USERS ARE 4. IT IS POSSIBLE TO OVERDOSE ON LAZY AND UNMOTIVATED? Scientists at Florida International University published a study in 2017 following the motivation levels of regular cannabis users. They concluded that “no significant differences were observed between regular and light users on any motivation index.” Their findings did not support any link between motivation and cannabis use. Yay for science.
CANNABIS? The Drug Enforcement Agency’s website's Drug Fact Sheet on Marijuana, states that, "No death from overdose of marijuana has ever been reported." Also, The Drug and Alcohol Fact Sheet on The National Institute of Health (NIH) site says, "No, you cannot overdose and die from marijuana." Thanks DEA. The experts have spoken.

CANNABIS USE LOWERS SPERM COUNT? In March of 2018, a study conducted by Boston University, and reported and published in The Boston Medical Journal, found that, “The influence of marijuana use on human fertility had little overall to no association on fecundability.” Fecundability is the probability of being pregnant in a single menstrual cycle. Meaning, cannabis doesn’t lower sperm count after all.

CANNABIS IS A GATEWAY DRUG? The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reported that, “The majority of people who use marijuana do not go on to use other, ‘harder’ substances. Alcohol and nicotine are more likely to prime the brain for a heightened response to other drugsandaretypicallyusedbefore a person progresses to other, more harmful substances.” Take that Gene Simmons.

CANNABIS IS ADDICTIVE? Cannabis is the most widely used drug in the USA and by their 20s, over 56% of Americans have tried it, but only 16% of patients in addiction treatment report it as being their primary drug of choice. Dr. Carl Hart, associate professor of clinical neuroscience at Columbia University, says “Marijuana withdrawal is annoying, but it isn’t life threatening.”
SMOKING CANNABIS CAN CAUSE LUNG CANCER? Dr. Donald Tashkin, emeritus professor of medicine at UCLA in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, says “There’s no apparent carcinogenic effect on the lung or upper airway and no apparent effect with regard to the risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary lung disease”. COPD is the 3rd leading cause of death in America.

CANNABIS LEADS TO PSYCHOSIS OR SCHIZOPHRENIA? A study published in The Journal of Nature Neuroscience made new discoveries about the relationship between cannabis use and schizophrenia. California legalization Prop 64 is supposed to earn the state millions of dollars each year in cannabis excise and sales taxes, with a portion allocated to anti-cannabis ads aimed at youth. “These initial reports confirm that legalizing and regulating cannabis doesn’t increase youth marijuana use, but rather it has the opposite effect,” said Ellen Komp, deputy director of California NORML. “The fact that the biggest drop in reported use came from younger age groups is a particularly encouraging indicator of the success of regulation.” “It’s time to stop trying to ‘send a message’ to young people about drugs and instead implement sound, science-based policies that best protect our children and public safety, along with our privacy and human rights,” concluded Komp.

Trump Administration Admits to a “Secret” Cannabis Committee... But for the Sole Purpose of Reporting Negative Statistics About Cannabis B. Le Grand
implications of such trends.”
In late August, BuzzFeed News reported that The White House has secretly amassed a committee of federal agencies from across the government to combat public support for cannabis and cast state legalization measures in a negative light, while attempting to portray the drug as a national threat. The interviews with agency staff and procured documents obtained were conducted by BuzzFeed News.
The White House at one point said “more pot enforcement would be forthcoming,” however President Trump has never personally said he was onboard with that agenda. On his campaign trail prior to his election, Trump stated he “basically supports medical use of cannabis.” This summer, in June, he announced that he "really supports new bipartisan legislation in Congress that would let state marijuana legalization thrive.”
The Marijuana Policy Coordination Committee, as it’s named in White Housememosandemails, instructed 14 federal agencies and the Drug Enforcement Administration to submit “data demonstrating the most significant negative trends” about marijuana and the “threats” it poses to the country.
Several states have approved laws allowing adults to use and purchase cannabis. Critics have touted that over-acceptance of marijuana will promote drug abuse, particularly among youth, and they have pressed for a federal crackdown.
All documents indicate that officials are seeking data that show marijuana consumption or legalization laws, which have been approved in eight states, do not serve any public benefit or do a better job of reducing drug abuse.
The Marijuana Policy Coordination Committee’s hardline agenda and deep bench suggest an extraordinarily far-reaching effort to reverse public attitudes and scrutinize the states with cannabis laws. Its reports are to be used in a briefing for Trump “on marijuana threats.”
The committee met on July 27 with many of the largest agencies in the federal government, including the departments of Justice, Homeland Security, Health and Human Services, and State. The meeting was coordinated by White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.
“The prevailing marijuana narrative in the U.S. is partial, one-sided, and inaccurate,” says a summary of a July 27 meeting of the White House and nine departments. In a follow-up memo, which provided guidance for responses from federal agencies, White House officials told department officials, “Departments should provide the most significant data demonstrating negative trends, with a statement describing the
“There is an urgent need to message the facts about the negative impacts of marijuana.” “Staff believe that if the administration is to turn the tide on increasing marijuana use there is an urgent need to message the facts about the negative impacts of marijuana use, production, and trafficking on national health, safety, and security,” says the meeting summary. The White House declined to discuss the committee's process, EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com
Lindsay Walters, Deputy White House Press Secretary, told BuzzFeed News, “The Trump Administration’s policy coordination process is an internal, deliberative process to craft the President’s policies on a number of important issues facing the American people, and ensure consistency with the President’s agenda."
An unclassified summary of the meeting, obtained by BuzzFeed News, says the memo is “predecisional and requires a close hold.” It also says the notes were not to be distributed externally. The White House followed up the following week by sending agencies and other departments, including but not limited to the departments of Defense, Education, Transportation and Veterans Affairs, as well as the Environmental Protection Agency, instructions to submit two-page, bulleted fact sheets that identify Continued on Page 65

Ironically, in one particular memo, the committee complained that the narrative around cannabis is unfairly biased in favor of the drug. Randy’s neighbor Joe grows Purple Skunky Kush and Super Hindu Haze while the Marsh family cultivates Green Willy Stranger and Catatonic ‘Tegridy Bud. Towelie even shows back up, now working as a Colorado State Agricultural Inspector and tester, where he uses his unique set of skills to make sure the cannabis produced is pure and safe. Meanwhile, back on the playground and the other side of the equation, vaping has become a schoolyard epidemic that has even infested the kindergarteners who recommend Gummy Bear Surprise flavored nicotine. Ike Broflovski is even using a vape and his dealer is Butters, who’s partnered with Cartman, of course. It’s hilarious and much more effective at covering the topic than the unfunny and tone deaf ‘Truth’ commercials featuring not endearing puppets that were airing constantly on Comedy Central during the commercial breaks. The Vape Rep from the big vape company visits Randy telling him he’d like to put ‘Tegridy Bud into his product and the issues finally tie together. The Colorado State Health Department praised the FDA’s plan on targeting underage vaping and called it an epidemic. In the cannabis space we’ve seen a number of different vape controversies come up, from propylene glycol and vegetable or coconut oil fillers, popcorn lung, EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com
underground butane extraction labs catching fire or blowing up, pesticides getting vaporized in post processing, batteries going on/ off in people’s pockets, moisture and vape molecules in the lungs, lipid pneumonia, foreign unsafe terpenes with no allergen warning or information, a general lack of labsafe testing and some other stuff too. Some people love to vape and I’m a fan myself, as long as it’s safe, clean, tested and organic product made by experts from quality flower. There are only a couple of brands I’ll use unless it’s for a product review or something I’m testing. We still don’t know what the long term effects are of any of the newer technologies but at its simplest, vaping shouldn’t be much different than old school hash oil. Anyway, Randy sends the vape rep away and the real drama begins. I’ll stop with the spoilers but I do believe this is one of the best episodes of South Park ever made. It’s amazing they have managed to stay so relevant for so long and how they can hit such a bullseye lampooning an industry the rest of the entertainment world has failed to successfully highlight in a meaningful, believable or relevant way. I’d recommend watching high and while medicating. Vape if you like but be sure to choose a high quality and safe brand, or enjoy organic flower smoked old school Randy Marsh style. The recent South Park episode, “Tegridy’ Farms” the 4th ep in season 22, is one of the most accurate depictions of the regulated cannabis industry I’ve ever watched on television. I caught the show in a hotel in Utah while there for a conference and it was shown at the end of a block of South Park so I didn’t even realize it was brand new at the time. Having just visited an organic, sungrown cannabis farm run by a small family in Colorado, Pharm Aid Pharms, I was particularly receptive to Stan’s dad Randy Marsh’s new business. After getting fed up with the big city problems of living in the small mountain town of South Park, Randy immediately moves the family to an all natural cannabis and hemp farm deep in the Rocky mountains. ‘Tegridy Farms is what he names it and he quickly gets busy farming hemp and unique and potent strains of cannabis as well as making and wearing hemp clothing and feeding the family hemp cereal with hemp milk and hemp oil and vinegar bruschetta with some hemp-seed tabouli. He creates a special new hemp fiber stocking hat for his son that plays the Spin Doctors whenever you wear it and begins speaking in an accent that sounds like the Pepperidge Farms farmer in addition to singing a song during his farming montage, “On a Colorado Farm”, that pretty much sounds like an homage to “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” “City folks are fightin' and I don't give

We were somewhere on the edge of Main Street near the Las Vegas Paiute Tribal Smoke Shop when we started noticing the signs. NuWu Cannabis Marketplace was getting closer and we were going there to drop off magazines. It turns out, NuWu Cannabis Marketplace is the largest cannabis dispensary in the world at 16,000 sq ft and it’s open 24 hours a day. All you need to shop there is a valid state ID, driver’s license or passport proving you’re at least 21 years old and you’re all good. And to top it off there’s a drive thru and the drive thru runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as well. Yes you read that correctly, a drive thru window for cannabis. So far there are only a handful of legal cannabis drive through windows in the world. In addition to NuWu there’s also Tumbleweed in Parachute, Colorado and Joint Rivers in Auburn, Washington, but NuWu is the the only one that never sleeps and stays open all night.
24
After dropping off the latest issue inside the shop, we drove around the building following the signs and very easily found the drive thru. The attendant asked if we’d placed an online order, which she explained they prefer you do to keep things smooth and easy. We told her we hadn’t and that our visit was pretty spontaneous so we’d keep things simple and just pick up a nice pre roll. She was courteous and after telling us the available strains
and prices we quickly settled on a $15 Tangie Joint. We didn’t have a compliant exit bag so we bought a NuWu branded one for a dollar and the joint was delivered to us inside it, along with our returned IDs and change. All in all the entire exchange only took a few minutes and would have been even faster if we hadn’t been conducting an impromptu interview, and faster still had we pre-ordered. It was honestly the fastest purchase I’ve ever been involved with in the world of retail cannabis and was at least as fast and efficient as any other drive thru service window I’ve ever been to and one can’t help but think this just might be the future of something. If delivery services and drive through windows can be done correctly it really does seem like it could be a transformative time in a very good way. The Tangie joint was great by the way - it smoked and tasted exactly like you’d want it too. Light and citrus flavored with aromatic terpenes dancing around the senses and filling us with a renewed energy to continue our brief working visit to the city of sin. There were more magazines to deliver before our return to the city of angels. So once again we were on the move, and just stoned enough to be totally confident. Visit www.nuwucannabis.com to place an order before your visit.

Kristen Bell says “Weed Rules” On WTF Podcast with Marc Maron

Edibles Magazine™ Issue 50
WTF with Marc Maron, a weekly podcast and radio show hosted by stand-up comedian Marc Maron, recently featured actress Kristen Bell as a guest where she spoke openly on the show about her cannabis use and her husband Dax Shepard’s sobriety. “I like my vape pen quite a bit and I smoke around my husband. It doesn’t seem to bother him… Weed rules.” She made it clear that she’s not an alldaywakeandbaker, mostlybecause she’s way too busy being a mom to stay high all day. She told Maron, “Once a week, if I am exhausted and we are about to sit down and watch ’60 Minutes,' why not?”

Kristen Bell is best known for playing teenage television detective Veronica Mars as well as Princess Anna of Arendelle in the animated movie “Frozen”. She earned some solid stoner street cred when she starred as Mary Lane in “Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical”, the 2005 made-for-television musical comedy film adaptation of the musical of the same name, itself based on the 1936 exploitation film also of the same title. When asked if there was a problem
getting high in front of a partner who feels unable to indulge, she stated, “He doesn’t have a problem with anyone else partaking in anything, provided within reason, that they’re not acting like a complete schmuck”. Her husband Shepard recently celebrated 14 years of being sober. Back before he married Bell, Dax had said that he “loved to get fucked up -- drinking, cocaine, opiates, marijuana, diet pills, pain pills, everything.” Far more serious and damaging drug use than his wife’s occasional use of cannabis. Bell went on to say, “He lost his privilege with them because he can’t handle it… His brain doesn’t have the chemistry to handle it.” Some Twitter users seemed to have a major problem with Bell admitting she uses cannabis at home, with her children in the house and in front of a spouse who has been in recovery for 14 years, calling her “inconsiderate”. One tweeter wrote: “Give up the weed for your kids sake.”, while another tweeted, “Oh man I love her so much but drugs, really?”. It’s actually much more toned down behavior than her character in the “Bad Moms” movie series, where she

openly gets crazy wild drunk with her friends at the mall on a school night. It feels like people expect “moms” to relax with red wine and prescription pills but not cannabis and that seems very unfair. The stigma attached to cannabis has been hanging over our heads for far too long. If Kristen Bell, who is a relatively family friendly and mainstream tv and movie star wants to hit a vape pen once a week while watching 60 Minutes, the world really should support her, or at the very least leave her alone. She’s a popular Disney Princess and role model who also holds her own in raunchy comedies alongside guys like Jonah Hill and Jason Segel and still comes across as a very cool person and a great parent to two daughters. She’s even currently starring in the award winning show, “The Good Place” alongside Ted Danson. If Kristen’s husband Dax Shepard supports her cannabis use after he’s had 14 years of sober living, who is anyone else to judge? You’re right Kristen, weed does rule indeed! Check out her appearance on WTF: http://www.wtfpod.com/ podcast/episode-951-kristen-bell.

FDA Says: CBD Should Not Be a Controlled Substance Paul Pot
The Federal Drug Administration has recently released a 27-page memo stating that CBD should not be a controlled substance but treaties require it. The FDA has clearly said that cannabidiol, or CBD, should not be listed as a controlled substance but there are international treaties that require the US to regard it as such. Dr. Brett Giroir, assistant secretary for the US Health and Human Services Department tells us that "CBD has negligible potential for abuse", according to recent reporting in Marijuana Business Daily. While THC remains a Schedule One drug, Giroir states that CBD "doesn't even meet the standards for a Schedule Five drug", which is the least restricted class. In other words, almost like over the counter. He does point out that if those treaties were changed, then Congressional action could be taken right away to change CBD's status. It is still regarded as a cannabis extract. Giroir's comments were contained in a letter to the DEA about how to handle the classification of CBD. It has always been included in Class One but last May the DEA announced that if a product had no more than 0.1% THC, then it could be classified as a Schedule Five. A product testing more than that remains on Schedule One.The letter was only recently made public. However they have so far only extended that re-classification to one synthetic version called Epidiolex. It is manufactured by a London-based operation called GW Pharmaceuticals. Many critics are saying this is still a glacially slow response to acceptance of both CBD and THC use in society. It could also be argued that the government and big business want to be financially in on anything being legally sold. If one looks behind the Controlled Substance Act, there is no mention of CBD. Therefore, is it even under the purview of the FDA to begin with? A recent story in the Portland Mercury paints a confusing picture of the dilemma, stating that "the FDA says CBD oil is a new drug while in the same breath saying it can't be sold either as a drug or a health supplement. What on earth?" The Hemp Industries Association has recently sent a letter to the FDA saying the use of hemp as a food and dietary supplement has been used for ages, long before someone at the FDA called it a "new drug". In a practical note, use of the CBD compound itself won't result in a failed drug test but sometimes it can contain trace amounts of THC and that could, in some cases register in a drug test. Word to the wise.
28
The solution to moving the use and acceptance of CBD, THC and related products forward lies with Congressional action. People who want to advance that agenda should focus efforts there. Issue 50 I Page 28

In a bowl, mix together spices and sprinkle generously over the hens, being sure to season the inside cavity as well. Place the hens on top of the bed of vegetables. Run your fingers under the skin to loosen it. Place a pat of cannabis butter under the skin of each hen. Tie the legs together with kitchen string or foil paper. Canna Cornmeal Pancakes with Cran Compote Vegan & Gluten-Free Instructions: Add cornmeal, oat flour, cane sugar, baking powder and sea salt to a medium to large mixing bowl and whisk to combine. Measure out almond milk in a large liquid measuring cup, then add melted cannabis butter (or substitute cannabis oil) and whisk to combine. Add wet to the dry ingredients and gently, slowly stir until just combined. You may not use all of the liquid - you're looking for a semi-thick batter (see photo). Small lumps are fine - try not to overmix. Let it set for 10 minutes.

Make Compote next. Add cranberries, orange juice and maple syrup to small to medium skillet or saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Then lower heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring frequently, or until cranberries are soft. Transfer to a food processor and blend until smooth. Add a little water or more orange juice to thin into a spreadable sauce. Taste and adjust sweetness as needed, adding more maple syrup or stevia extract to taste. Return back to skillet/saucepan and keep warm over low heat until serving.

Preheat your griddle or cast iron skillet over medium/medium-low heat. You want it warm but not screaming hot. Oil should not smoke when added to the pan. Once hot, drizzle the surface with oil or vegan butter and use a paper towel to wipe away excess - you don't want any pools of oil/butter. Then scoop scant 1/4 cup measurements onto the griddle or pan. Cook until bubbles appear and the sides are beginning to dry - about 3-4 minutes. Cook for another 2-4 more minutes on the other side. Place pancakes on a large plate and keep warm in a 200 degree F (93 C) oven until ready for serving - should have 6 pancakes total. Top with cranberry-orange compote and a drizzle of warm maple syrup. Add more melted cannabis butter if you desire and enjoy an infused brunch at any time of day. PRODUCT REVIEWS BB-8 Herb Grinder
CannaPunch Pineapple Mango Delight

Daisy Dahlia
Edibles Magazine™ Issue 50
This is the Droid you’re looking for -- The BB-8 Bud Grinder is a perfect looking Star Wars Droid-Weed Grinder with a Kief Catcher that is 2" tall , made from top quality and extra durable zinc and comes in 3 sturdy Pieces. This grinder is exactly the right size to blend right in with the rest of your action figures and collectibles.
44
BB-8 was first introduced in “Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens” as the astromech droid of the Resistance X-wing fighter pilot Poe Dameron and is voiced by Bill Hader, who played Private Miller in the black and white opening scene from “Pineapple Express”. These grinders were featured this year at The Edibles Magazine booth at The LA Comic Con and they were a big hit. Often times, the cuter or more of a novelty a piece is, the less likely it is to work well in a practical fashion. Not the case here, these work great and grind everything just the right size for rolling proper blunts and joints. The kief it collects in the bottom is nice and fine, perfect for dusting the micro crops. If you’re looking to roll a super mega size hitter, you’ll probably need the droid to do at least 2 rounds but it’s ideal for regular sized wraps. BB-8 also comes with a solid black box carrying case to keep it safe. These grinders make great gifts for any Ganja Geek who loves smoking, seshes and Sci-Fi. Order one at BuyEdiblesNow,com, and May the Force be with You!
CannaPunch is a non-carbonated, cannabisinfused beverage that’s 100% all-natural and vegan, as well as being gluten-free, soyfree, and corn syrup free and made from the highest quality Nevada or Colorado cannabis with the concentrate produced using only the choicest full flower whole buds. CannaPunch tastes like regular high quality fruit punch. Less natural tasting than fresh juice for sure, but still seems more organic and better than soda or cola. The cannabis is infused using tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentrate and Maltodextrin as the emulsifier using NXT NanoExtractions Technology so you feel it faster. The taste of marijuana is undetectable so if you’ve got a sweet tooth it’s easy to drink the whole bottle which is 10 recommended servings. There’s an AccuCup™ measuring cup that comes over the lid of the bottle for accuracy. The bottle says “Regular Strength”, and from what I remember about this brand that means 100mg THC total in ten 10mg doses. The flavor is sweet, tart and smooth with a good creeper effect that comes on slow and steady and stays for a long time. It’s a full body and head high that is intensely mellow. You could actually cut it a bit with cold water and ice if you find the taste a bit strong although it’s pretty delicious and a little bit like liquid candy in a bottle. Available in Nevada and Colorado, check CannaPunch. com to see where the closest dispensaries to you might be. Remember, dinks pass through the digestive tract faster than edibles and will hit much sooner so be careful and sip safely.

NXTLVL 500mg Vape Oil Cartridges Tommy Knowledge
NXTLVL is a new brand of vape cartridge that will soon be available in California. NXTLVL is produced by Jeff the 710 Rocket Surgeon and Amber Lee Abbott, and they happen to be my personal favorite when it comes to creating top quality cannabis oil. They started out making RELM, then went on and created both W Vapes and Apollon Formularies where they continued perfecting the art of extraction. Now they’re making NXTLVL cartridges the best yet. Each cartridge is 500mg of supercritical Co2 extracted strain specific cannabis oil with all of the flower’s native terpenes reintroduced in post processing for extra flavor, aroma and effect. This particular strain was lemon haze and tastes silky smooth just like you remember the buds smelling. Top quality stainless steel and glass wickless cartridges with a central pole are used in manufacturing so you know the hardware is good enough to go with the product and like usual it’s a 5/10 thread so they work with most any normal size battery. The feeling produced by the high is outstanding. Delicious to continue puffing on and completely natural tasting, there’s no PG, VG or non native terps added and the flower used is all organic and nug run. It’s a light, heady effect and you’ll find it easy to relax after just a couple of puffs. Nice natural clouds are produced perfect for blowing those smoke rings we all love without annoying any non-smokers who might be nearby. The new website is gonxtlvl.com, so you should be able to find them at California shops very soon. The Visionary Issue

The Piecemaker Kube™ Silicone Dab Rig Jack Paradise
Edibles Magazine™ Issue 50
Piecemaker™ has been one of our top favorite manufacturers of smoking equipment since we first met them a couple of years ago at The Big Show in LA. They’re the best in the business when it comes to Silicone and making indestructible pipes, bongs and reusable blunt crutches, and now they’ve made a Dab Rig - meet The Kube™, a unique cannabis concentrate dabbing device that just might last you forever. Like all Piecemaker products, The Kube is made to an exacting standard, using FDA-approved, food-safe silicone with a stainless steel base and a quality quartz crystal banger for the nail. The Dimensions are 3.5" x 3.5" x 3" and it’s available in a variety of cool color combinations, including Glow-in-the-Dark.
46
Our official introduction to The Kube™ was at a mansion in the Hollywood Hills when the Piecemaker representative dropped it off with a bunch of other pieces for Ta Smallz’ “420 Roll-Up” video shoot. The Kube comes with all of it’s pieces stored inside of it: the Exclusive Quartz Banger with Piecemaker Logo, the Ergonomic Silicone Mouthpiece, L-Shaped, Diffused Downstem Silicone Storage Jar
and Silicone Tipped Tool all fit neatly inside the box shaped central chamber. In fact, we weren’t completely sure what we were looking at when we first got it and thought it might be the Lament Configuration, the LeMarchand box from Clive Barker's "Hellraiser" series, and might have been at risk of summoning Pinhead or some silicone Cenobites. Not really, but it was something of a puzzle to figure out but that’s only because we didn’t have any instructions and didn’t bother looking any up. Once we had it assembled it was a thing of beauty to behold. It looks awesome, like a piece of machinery from a cartoon based on a Dr. Seuss story. Using cool water in the box works best and The Kube pairs perfectly with the Original Jack Herer™ Sauce we’ve been enjoying so much lately and it stores nicely in the little jar provided. I’ve seen too many glass dab rigs fall to their deaths in my day and I’m glad I’ll never have to witness the destruction of a Piecemaker Kube ™. The quartz banger heats up quick and glows red hot like a fire poker at the peak and is easy to keep clean with a little extra attention from your torch. You can get one for yourself and be doing indestructible dabs in no time by ordering at piecemakergear.com.

Malaysian Death Sentence Abolished Due to a Cannabis Crime Patrick Ian Moore
Muhammad Lukman Mohamad, a 29 year old father, received a death sentence in August for selling medicinal cannabis oil to cancer patients in Malaysia. Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia’s new prime minister, called for a review of the death sentence. After the review, the Malaysian government decided not only to repeal Mohamad’s sentence, but to eliminate the death penalty entirely. “All death penalty will be abolished. Full stop,” Malaysia’s minister of law, Liew Vui Keong, told reporters at the Malay Mail. He went on to say, “Our view is that executions should not be carried out. We will inform the Pardons Board to look into the various applications for all the death row inmates to either commute or release them… When commuted, they would have to face life imprisonment because there had been several deaths that were caused by the offender and so they were sentenced to death by the court.” Muhammad Lukman Mohamad was originally convicted of trafficking in cannabis, a crime punishable by death in Malaysia and he was sentenced to death by hanging on Aug. 30th of this year. A Change.org petition garnered over 45,000 signatures and called for amendments to Malaysia's harsh drug laws and for the government to free Muhammad Lukman. In 2016 Malaysia carried out nine executions and imposed 36 death sentences. The country was also reported to have 1042 death row inmates, including 413 foreign nationals. The death penalty for drug trafficking was made mandatory in 1983. Under section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act, those in possession of 200 grams or more cannabis will receive the mandatory death sentence. Liew Vui Keong also added that “All the papers (for the abolishment of the death penalty law) are in the final stage. The Attorney General has also indicated to us that it is ready to be tabled, hopefully in this Parliamentary session.” Thanks to cannabis, Muhammad Lukman Mohamad, and a progressive new kind of government, the death penalty in Malaysia has been abolished. That’s revolutionary. The Visionary Issue

Michigan House Approves Industrial Hemp Bills Paul Pot
The Michigan House of Representatives just took a big step forward in expanding cultivation and sale of industrial hemp in their state by passing three new pieces of legislation. Each one must still be approved by the Michigan Senate before going to the governor. However the house votes were overwhelmingly in favor. Here's how the three bills break down, according to The Tenth Amendment Center.
Edibles Magazine™ Issue 50
House Bill 6331 (HB6331) was introduced by Rep. Steve Johnson. It's purpose was to clarify the definition of industrial hemp. It passed October 4th, 106 to 0.
50
The other two bills HB6330 and HB6380 were introduced by Rep. Dan Lauwers. HB6330 will create a licensing program for industrial hemp growers and those who will process and handle it. It allows a person to handle, process, broker and market, but only if they are licensed under this act. The bill goes on to further define terms like "broker" and "marketing" and how they apply. Bill HB6380 establishes that industrial hemp is not included in the definition of marijuana. It would also position Michigan's Department of Agriculture and
Universities. This really opened the door to research this plant and it's uses. Michigan is one of ten states that currently have similar laws in place.
Rural Development (MOARD) to establish "standards, procedures and requirements for the sale of industrial hemp from a provisional center, to a registered, qualified patient". Both of those bills passed October 18th by 105 to 1. All three bills were drafted in a manner to keep Michigan compliant on the federal level but it does open the door for the state to eventually nullify the prohibition of the hemp plant. States that legalize industrial hemp, usually expand their program once successfully established. Back in January 2015, Michigan governor Rick Snyder signed public acts 547 and 548 2014 which removed the term "industrial hemp" from the state's legal definition of marijuana and more importantly authorized hemp research by Michigan's Ag group (MOARD) and Michigan
EdiblesList.com I EdiblesMagazine.com
Hemp cultivation goes back to the Puritans who brought it to America as a source for fiber. Notably both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson grew hemp for paper. Hemp became villainized as a result of the 1937 Marihuana Tax Act and the ensuing scare tactics. Today modern plant breeding has determined that hemp is cannabis with no more than 0.3% THC while medical cannabis can be 5-30% THC. Hemp does not produce the psychoactive effects and has no basis for abuse. In 2005 a Congressional Service report stated the US was the only developed nation that had not developed an industrial hemp crop for economic uses. Experts suggest there is a $600 million dollar annual market for hemp products annually. They also state there are more than 25,000 uses for industrial hemp. Michigan's House has recognized this potential and taken a big step ahead in bringing the industrial hemp industry to their state.
VETERAN'S CORNER
The Air Is Different Up Here... A Veteran's Farming Story Colin Wells
I am in a tent camping out about 150 yards above the main section of the farm, where there are several hoop tents full of various strains. Woven within the tents are perfectly grown outdoor specimens of cannabis. Blackberry Paka to Larry OG and Mother’s Milk. They are growing several amazing flowers here each one as uniquely special as the last. The plants sit in a valley soaking up the sun and all the nutrients this carefully managed biosphere has created. Each morning when I ride the four wheeler
down from my campsite, I am immediately struck with the powerful smell of expertly grown cannabis. I love coffee, but this smell is the next best thing. For a veteran who has been through the things I have this place does wonders for me. Having a farm like this for veterans to come and heal is my ultimate goal. I want to share the feelings that everyone who works and lives at this farm wakes up with. The sense that cannabis is there to help us. Always. And if we help ourselves we can help others. Rancho Ecomar has attracted some of the best people in the world to come work and learn at their farm. The crew is made up of an amazing cast of cannabis lovers. That’s what this is all about. Love. Love for cannabis. Love for oneself. And love for the world. Where as some farms hide their secrets from outsiders Rancho Ecomar is open and willing to share knowledge with their peers. There is so much to learn and everyone here is eager to experiment. Cannabis is a great unifier of people, as well as the catalyst for so many to get back to the life they deserve. Those of us who have found answers in it need to know that our medicine is being g row n re s p o n s i b ly a n d
with love. The biosphere grown aspect of Rancho Ecomar provides natural pest repellents and several hundred-year-old Oaktrees are still standing where they could easily have been torn down to make room for more plants. Doing this would disrupt the ecosystem in ways that would certainly disrupt the way the cannabis is grown. The owners and managers of this farm will not have that, they see the value in growing cannabis the right way. My love for this farm is c le a r ly v e r y p e r s o n a l . I have never been so passionate about anything as I am about cannabis. It is my great calling. And I have fallen in love with the air here. The air that helps the medicine that helps me be a father. The air that is truly different. This is part one of an ongoing series Colin Wells will be doing on cannabis farming. Colin Wells is an Army Infantry Veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom and the founder of @veteranswalkandtalk, a group of veterans who hike, provide outreach, and advocate for the use of holistic remedies. He sits on the Advocacy Board of the Veterans Cannabis Coalition @ veteranscannacoalition and writes for www.laughterunderfire.org

The air is different up here. Something we’ve all said when getting into nature after a long time spent in the city. The air is certainly different at Rancho Ecomar farms where I’ve b e e n s p e n d i n g s eve ra l weeks farming cannabis. The biosphere that they’ve created is nothing short of medicinally miraculous. T h e g e n e ro s i t y o f t h e amazing people is astounding, and they have a l lo w e d m e t o e m b e d myself completely in the harvesting process during the month of October 2018. I have chopped plants down, I have bucked plants into totes, trimmed plants, and I have certainly sampled many of them. For someone as passionate about cannabis as I am this place is paradise…

Son of Kenya's Former Prime Minister Calls for Legalizing Medical Marijuana Paul Pot

The son of Kenya's former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, Jr. has called for the legalization of medical cannabis in his country. This is significant in that marijuana has been demonized for years in Kenya, making Odinga, Jr.'s appeal all the more important. Odinga says he makes this appeal because he believes it could ease the suffering of the Kenyan people who are stricken with HIV/AIDS and other diseases. His position is counter to what his country has legislated in the recent past. Odinga gave a recent interview with KISS FM Kenya and reported in Nairobi News when he stated," It was made illegal in 1994 but before that it was legal. It was used back in history as a pain reliever during childbirth, among other medical purposes. It can be used as a chronic pain reliever for cancer survivors or a stimulant for appetite that does not need to be smoked. This is what we want to push". Odinga also believes it could help ease the HIV/AIDS epidemic that plagues the nation. Among youth, especially those under 24, it is reported that over 300,000 are HIV positive. Medical cannabis has reportedly helped with HIV-related inflammation and can possibly even slow the progress of the disease. To him, he sees that society is evolving and there is a need for open and honest discussion of topics that were once taboo but have had terrible effects on society. Kenyans are not big consumers of marijuana as a society in general. The common terms for cannabis there are "bhang" and "daga". The country's Rastafarian movement, many of who believe The Promised Land is in Ethiopia, have long embraced it for medical and spiritual reasons. Now there is new movement underway to promote medical cannabis because of the economic potential and seeing Canada, parts of the US and other countries starting to create legal markets. In September, Kibra MP Ken Okoth, a government official running for office and campaigning for legalization as well, introduced The Marijuana Control Bill 2018 which would legalize cannabis cultivation in Kenya. He supports it because he also believes it brings agricultural diversity to the country's economic base. He sees the US as one ready market and revenues can be made through cultivation, sale and taxation. When he was challenged about the legality of his proposal he stated that "something could be done under (existing) laws" adding that,"tobacco which is legal in Kenya is no better that weed". He spoke recently on the country's Citizen TV and it was reported also on Kenyans.co.uk in August. South Africa recently legalized cannabis for private use so change is coming, although just a few years ago neighboring Zimbabwe shot down similar proposals. As more countries around the globe awaken to the positive potential for this plant, Odinga sees cannabis as a cash crop for his country's economy and a boon to the medical needs of his people. In a recent interview on standardmedia.co.ke, he said "I have always been liberal in my views. I posted on social media with great feeling that there is a need to legalize marijuana, as it is something that can help Kenya especially sick people who need marijuana in their treatment," he said.

Smoking Cannabis After Surgery: The Pros and Cons Emerald Magazine
Risks and Recovery There are several risks associated with smoking cannabis immediately after surgery. In general, surgeons prefer your body to be substancefree following a procedure so that if something goes wrong it’s easier for them to figure out the cause. A few of the major risks to consider are the risk of infection, decreased blood flow, and slower recovery. Smoking cannabis — or tobacco, for that matter — involves ingesting large numbers of particulates. This process can also damage the immune system and create a potentially unhygienic environment. Additionally, smoking after surgery can cause coughing. This may lead to stitches tearing and cause drains to leak. These
constraints do not apply to someone who wants to take cannabis in some way other than smoking. Cannabis consumed through edibles and oils does not impact the healing process. However, you may still want to be cautious and careful about using cannabis immediately after surgery, especially if you’re on painkillers. Combined, these substances may affect your overall mood and behavior patterns. When is Smoking Safe Again? While different for every procedure, the recovery period for most surgical procedures lasts several weeks. After about a month, when you are able to exercise again, you should be able to be able to start smoking cannabis. Over time, your wounds will heal up and you will also stop taking pain medication. At this point in the recovery process, there are no extra side effects from the use of cannabis to be worried about. The Bottom Line Recovering after surgery can be a lengthy process, and cannabis can play a big role in making this period more bearable. While there are risks associated with smoking shortly after surgery, and you should be sure to listen to your doctor’s advice, you can safely use cannabis in other forms to relieve your pain and help get you back to normal.

There are many reasons why you might want to smoke cannabis after surgery, but the driving one is usually the desire to relieve pain. Cannabis is widely noted as an effective pain reliever that may be preferable to many synthetic or opioidrelated drugs. Studies suggest cannabis is much less addictive, and comes with fewer side effects. People may also want to smoke cannabis in order to return to their pre-surgical lifestyle. If cannabis is a part of your daily routine, you may be eager to get back to your everyday habits. However, there are some precautions to take.

HIGH MOVIE REVIEW (cont'd)
Crazy Rich Asians Continued from PG 55
relate to these scenarios directly, as my mother was an immigrant that came to America to escape a life of martial law and communism where she was from. My grandmother had stories of having to swim through dead bodies in a sea stained red by blood, to get to the boat, filled with more dead bodies, as a 5 year old with her family escaping to Taiwan from the Chinese war. My grandparents immigrated after their children did, so I was lucky enough to have the memories of making dumplings as a family together. My Chinese grandparents didn’t speak any English so I had to learn broken Chinese to communicate with them, and everytime I would speak Chinese they would tell me how American my accent sounded. But even in my own Chinese family, I am half-white, and even being Americanborn like my cousins, I’m still looked at as different. Not only does Crazy Rich Asians accurately tackle Chinese culture, and the guilt and judgment that takes place within their own families, it shatters any stereotype or mold that Hughiearen’t Stonefish Asians marketable in a Romantic Comedy. I actually can’t remember the last time I paid to see a rom-com in the theaters. I usually try to spare my boyfriend and we’ll stream on Amazon or Netflix some rom-com that had been released earlier this year, and we’ll save the movies like superhero films for the big screen. There was something very special about this film, and it was beyond a great cast, good acting, it really had a great storyline that expanded beyond just a boy meets girl, and happy ending. They say the best movies are based on books, and this one comes in a 3 part series. We hope that they will get greenlight for the next two studio releases, and we hope this sets a new precedent on casting with representation. They also say there are no bad actors, just bad casting. Henry Golding plays handsome and charming, so believably well in his first movie role. Constance Wu plays a perfect “banana,” a term used in the film to reference her as “yellow on the outside and white on the inside.” Awkwafina plays the comic relief so well, I feel like everyone has a friend like her in their group they can relate to. I don’t want to give too many spoilers, but its funny, it’s moving, it’s believable and takes place in a modern day setting that feels real to the viewer. It is just one culture tackled, and hopefully so many more to come. It feels like a special time in history for films like Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians to be made. In Crazy Rich Asians, you could replace Asians with black, Greeks, latino, white, etc. and it would still be relatable because the story is about identity, knowing who you are, tradition, approval from your family and following your heart. I read and heard other press interviews about the movie before I saw it, and the best way it’s been put but John Chu the director himself, by the end of the movie you don’t even notice you’re watching a film about Asians, you’re watching a great story. That’s why you should see it, it’s a great film, it’s making history, and you get to see the 1% of the 1% of the opulence in Asia. Issue 50 I Page 58

US NEWS
ULTRASONICS for Cannabis
Two Out of Three Americans Favor Legalizing Cannabis B. Le Grand According to a new Gallup Poll, 66% of Americans now support legalizing cannabis, a new high in Gallup's trend tracking cannabis support over nearly half a century. The latest figure marks the third consecutive year that support on the measure has increased and established a new record. Legalizing the use of cannabis was an unpopular idea when Gallup first polled Americans in 1969, just 12% at that time said it should be made legal. Support grew in the 1970s but stagnated in the 20% range until the new millennium, when momentum for legalization picked up again. Since 2000, support for legalizing cannabis has trended steeply upward, reaching majority support for the first time in 2013, one year after Colorado and Washington voters legalized recreational use of cannabis.

The October 1st-10th Gallup poll was conducted right before Canada enacted their legalization, becoming the second country in the world to legalize the recreational use of cannabis. Support for legalization in the U.S. has continued to grow, even as Attorney General Jeff Sessions has pledged to crack down on cannabis at the federal level. But Sessions' own department has done little to actually carry out his demonstrated opposition to legal marijuana, and states have continued to legalize it since Sessions took on his role. Moreover, President Donald Trump undermined his attorney general's pledged mission over the summer when he indicated he would likely support a bill to allow states to determine their own cannabis policies. Jeff Sessions' opposition to legalization is further Issue 50 I Page 60
US NEWS undercut by shifts in attitudes among his own political party. Gallup found last year that a slim majority of Republicans supported legal marijuana for the first time, and this year's figure, 53%, suggests continued Republican support.
Views that cannabis should be legalized have also reached new peaks this year among Democrats (75%) and independents (71%). Democrats reached majority-level support for legalization in 2009, and independents did so in 2010. An Aging Population Among Americans aged 55 and older, views that cannabis should be legalized now surpass the majority level, with 59% support, up 50% from last year. Meanwhile, solid majorities of younger adults have supported legalization for several years. Support is strongest among adults aged 18 to 34, at 78%, while nearly two in three adults aged 35 to 54 (65%) approve of legalizing cannabis.
In 2009 and 2010, prior to any state legalizing cannabis, support for legalization reached the majority level in only one U.S. region, the West, at 56%. The most dramatic change in attitudes about legalization are recent. As of 2017 and 2018, all regions now favor cannabis legalization with the West, South, and MidWest tied at 65% approval, and the East now leading approval at 67%. Trump Administration Admits to a "Secret"
Committee... But for the Sole Purpose of Reporting Negative Statistics About Cannabis
marijuana threats and issues with the initiatives with a deadline of August 10th. The spokespeople at those agencies declined to comment on the committee itself. Liz Hill, a spokesperson for the Education Department replied to an inquiry if they had submitted their response, “I’m told we did turn it in on time to The White House.” A State Department spokesperson told BuzzFeed News, “The State Department regularly coordinates with ONDCP on a wide range of drug control issues. For specific questions about the Marijuana Policy Coordination Committee, we refer you to ONDCP.” Neither the ONDCP officials or White House press office responded to requests to comment on the committee. Departments were told to “identify marijuana threats; issues created by state marijuana initiatives; and consequences of use, production, and trafficking on national health, safety, and security.” The agencies should also provide an example of a “story, relating an incident or picture, that illustrates one or more the key areas of concern related to use, production, and trafficking of marijuana,” the White House guidance says. The agencies were asked to describe how the drug poses threats to their department and the consequences of marijuana “on national health and security.” “We are asking each agency to
provide information on marijuana,” White House ONDCP staffer Hayley C. Conklin wrote in an email to department leaders on August 1. She cited the guidance document, saying, “it will assist you in providing the appropriate information.” While the vast majority of the 14 federal agencies declined to comment, however not a single department including the DEA, or the White House denied the cannabis committee’s existence. While we’re not surprised at these skewed one-sided data collecting practices, the committee’s agenda betrays Trump’s pledges to protect states from federal intervention. The White House made a statement last year that it expected “greater enforcement” of cannabis in states where it’s legal. President Trump has since suggested he'd support legislation to allow states to legalize cannabis untouched by the Justice Department. The move seemed to jab at Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has relentlessly threatened a cannabis crackdown. As leader of the Justice Department, Jeff Sessions has recited 1980s-style rhetoric about “saying no to marijuana.” Cannabis currently commands overwhelming public support, with two out of three Americans favoring legalization. (See our story on Page 60). It’s hard for us to imagine, with President Trump running for reelection that he would alienate the desires of 66% of the public inevitably losing potential votes.
