4 The Sesc_Videobrasil collection of publications includes different formats, each one appropriate to a specific manner of approaching problems identified as crucially important for the contemporary debate. Among them are the catalogs of the Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil, which feature curatorial cross-sections of art production of the geopolitical South; catalogs of solo shows by crucial artists of the contemporary art circuit; and Cadernos Sesc_Videobrasil, a publication dedicated to a reflective intersection between texts and artworks.

As of the 19th Festival, this collection was expanded with the Readings series, a compilation of essays targeting the vectors explored by the artists and developed by the curators of each edition of the Festival.

Thus, Readings: 20th Contemporary Art Festival Sesc_Videobrasil seeks to probe deeper into the guiding principles of this Festival, highlighting ancestral worldviews, non-hegemonic forms of building knowledge and their respective decolonization tactics, all conducive to an alternative interaction with history and the contradictions of present times. Therefore, Readings affords a more profound dialog between visual arts and other idioms, as well as other fields of knowledge.

The transversality inherent in this mode of addressing issues proves capable of generating resonances among distinct cultural indexes, providing perspectives which are more often than not surprising. Sesc understands that facing incongruities inherited from the colonial past and renewed by the peripheral geopolitical condition requires permanent efforts to foster education, cultural practices, research, and, ultimately, critical thinking. Alongside other initiatives and publications produced in partnership with Associação Cultural Videobrasil, this book contributes to incorporate essential debates into the open and possibility-rich field of contemporary art.

5 A coleção de publicações Sesc_Videobrasil é composta por diferentes formatos, cada qual propício a um viés específico de abordagem de problemáticas identificadas como cruciais para o debate contemporâneo. Entre eles, arrolam-se os catálogos do Festival de Arte Contemporânea Sesc_ Videobrasil, que apresentam recortes curatoriais da produção artística do Sul geopolítico; os catálogos das exposições individuais de artistas-chave do circuito artístico contemporâneo; e os Cadernos Sesc_Videobrasil, produção editorial dedicada a reflexões textuais em interseção com trabalhos de arte.

A esse conjunto veio somar-se, a partir do 19º Festival, a série Leituras, coletânea de ensaios cujas investidas se articulam aos vetores explorados pelos artistas e trabalhados pela curadoria a cada edição do Festival. Assim, Leituras: 20º Festival de Arte Contemporânea Sesc_ Videobrasil procura adensar o pensamento em torno dos aspectos norteadores do presente Festival. Destacam-se aí as cosmovisões ancestrais, as formas não hegemônicas de construção de conhecimento e suas respectivas táticas de descolonização, todas elas afeitas a uma lida alternativa com a história e as contradições do presente. Dessa forma, Leituras possibilita aprofundar o diálogo das artes visuais com outras linguagens e, ainda, com outros campos do saber.

A transversalidade inerente a esse modo de tratar as questões mostra-se capaz de ensejar ressonâncias entre índices culturais distintos, proporcionando perspectivas não raro surpreendentes. O Sesc entende que o enfrentamento das incongruências herdadas do passado colonial e atualizadas pela condição geopolítica periférica exige esforços permanentes em prol da educação, das práticas culturais, da pesquisa e, em última instância, do pensamento crítico. Combinando-se às demais ações e publicações realizadas em parceria com a Associação Cultural Videobrasil, este livro contribui para incorporar importantes discussões ao campo aberto e pleno de possibilidades da arte contemporânea.

14 Viewpoints emerging from the global South have always been the main focus of the research which guides the activities of Videobrasil. Long before the term even existed, the contemporary art festival we organize in partnership with Sesc São Paulo has been a privileged venue of speech: by researching, gathering, and exhibiting every two years a new set of works by artists from these regions, it unveils a profusion of intriguing narratives about our reality, our world, and our history, revealing not only the issues that mobilize them but also the connections they suggest, the choices they conceive, the solutions they descry.

The Readings series was created as an outlet for the reverberations of this valuable, and still insufficiently appreciated, contribution to thought. The first volume, released in 2016, discussed the meaning of the very concept of global South in the field of art production. Entrusted to the Portuguese curator João Laia, who was a member of the curatorial commission of the 20th Festival (2017) alongside Brazilian curators Ana Pato, Diego Matos, and Beatriz Lemos, this book exemplifies in various ways the power of a thought that reorganizes forms of knowledge and challenges interdicts—encroaching on watertight divisions between art and science, between man and nature, between dream and reality—to reach original critical views.

Visual or written, ironic or poetic, dense or deceptively light, the contributions concur in not acquiescing to entrenched conventions, whether those that irrevocably separate fields of knowledge or those that determine who the winners and losers of history are; in many ways, by retrieving views of the future anticipated in the past, probing into roots shared by art and activism, or evoking traditional myths to shed light on urgent realities, they embody and extend the spirit of the Festival’s works, seen in the images that open and close this book.

As perspectivas que emergem do Sul global sempre foram o foco central da pesquisa que norteia as ações do Videobrasil. Desde muito antes de a expressão existir, o festival de arte contemporânea que realizamos em parceria com o Sesc São Paulo configura-se como um privilegiado lugar de fala: ao prospectar, reunir e apresentar, a cada dois anos, um novo conjunto de trabalhos de artistas dessas regiões, descortina uma profusão de narrativas instigantes sobre nossa realidade, nosso mundo e nossa história, revelando não só as questões que os mobilizam, mas também as conexões que sugerem, os partidos que concebem, as saídas que divisam.

A série Leituras foi criada para dar vazão às reverberações dessa contribuição valiosa, e ainda insuficientemente apreciada, no plano do pensamento. O primeiro volume, lançado em 2016, discutia o sentido do próprio conceito de Sul global no âmbito da produção artística. Confiado ao curador português João Laia, que integrou a comissão curatorial do 20º Festival (2017) ao lado dos brasileiros Ana Pato, Diego Matos e Beatriz Lemos, este volume exemplifica, de formas diversas, a potência de um pensamento que rearticula saberes e questiona interditos – avançando sobre separações estanques entre arte e ciência, entre homem e natureza, entre sonho e realidade – para ganhar perspectivas críticas originais.

Visuais ou textuais, irônicas ou poéticas, densas ou enganosamente ligeiras, as contribuições têm em comum o fato de não condescender diante de convenções arraigadas, sejam aquelas que separam irrevogavelmente os campos do conhecimento, sejam as que determinam quem são os vencedores e quem são os perdedores da história; de muitas formas, ao voltar aos futuros antevistos no passado, mergulhar em busca das raízes compartilhadas por arte e ativismo ou evocar mitos tradicionais para iluminar realidades urgentes, encarnam e dão continuidade ao espírito das obras do Festival, entrevistas nas imagens que abrem e fecham este livro.

We are experiencing a critical moment of intense reconfiguration. Global dynamics sweep across the planet, challenging organizational forms previously deemed stable, while revealing the interpenetration of areas often represented in isolation, such as the mutual relations between economy, ecology, and politics. We are witnesses to a return of positions that privilege the individual, translated into conservative and nationalist measures, frequently associated with a limited conception of religion. From Brazil to India, from Russia to the United Kingdom, from Turkey to Australia, from Egypt to Angola, through the Middle East, Poland, and the United States, a generalized wave of a regressive nature seems to mark our present and near future. Advances we deemed safeguarded are being questioned, and social and geopolitical conflicts have reemerged with renewed force. We find ourselves facing a complex period which seems to represent the end of an era of widespread development of our societies.

The 2008 financial crisis is often pinpointed as the trigger behind the accelerations of such trends. Southern Europe was perhaps the most visible initial facet of its impact, with the collapse of countries such as Greece and Portugal. But the shock waves were also felt in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. The referendum that ended with the withdrawal of the UK from the European Union, known as Brexit, or the election of Donald Trump are easy examples, both products of a populism that exploits hard times to spread fear and seize power. This reconfiguration also has profound consequences in the symbolic context

Vivemos um momento crítico, de intensas reconfigurações. Uma dinâmica global percorre nosso planeta, questionando formas de organização que considerávamos estáveis, enquanto, ao mesmo tempo, demonstra a interpenetração de áreas muitas vezes representadas isoladamente – como as relações mútuas entre economia, ecologia e política. Somos testemunhas de um regresso de posições que privilegiam o indivíduo, traduzidas em medidas conservadoras e nacionalistas, muitas vezes associadas a uma concepção limitada de religião. Do Brasil à Índia, da Rússia ao Reino Unido, da Turquia à Austrália, do Egito a Angola, passando pelo Oriente Médio, a Polônia e os Estados Unidos, uma onda generalizada de caráter regressivo parece marcar nosso presente e futuro próximo. Avanços que julgávamos seguros estão sendo postos em xeque, e conflitos sociais e geopolíticos reaparecem com força renovada. Encontramo-nos num período complexo, que parece representar o final de uma época de desenvolvimento generalizado das nossas sociedades.

A crise financeira de 2008 é apontada, muitas vezes, como o gatilho para a aceleração dessas tendências. Num primeiro momento, o Sul da Europa foi talvez a face mais visível de seu impacto, com o colapso de países como Grécia e Portugal. Mas as ondas de choque também se fizeram sentir em territórios como os Estados Unidos e a Grã-Bretanha. O referendo que deu a vitória à saída do país da União Europeia, conhecido como Brexit, ou a eleição de Donald Trump são exemplos fáceis, ambos produto de um populismo que aproveita a situação difícil para semear o medo

The rising trend of the BRICS countries has been challenged, not only by the economic slowdown in China, Russia, and India but also by the political upheavals and financial maneuvers that have marked, for example, the Brazilian setting. More recently, countries such as Turkey have been at the core of intense conflicts that have also destabilized their position in the world setting.

Beyond the state, other agents have progressively imposed their presence at the global level to the point of questioning the role of the former as the primary source of power in the current geopolitical context. This is not new in the case of multinational corporations and terrorist organizations. However, both have increased the scope and scale of their activities.

The exponential development of mobile communication through portable computers, cell phones, and tablets, and the widespread dissemination of the Internet have opened up a whole new field of action with long-lasting effects and encouraged the creation of networks which, despite their geographical dispersion, are permanently linked. The power of corporations such as Alphabet (which includes Google) and Apple, and the emergence of groups like Al-Qaeda and the self-proclaimed Islamic State (a.k.a. ISIS or Daesh) are some of the most visible signs of this movement, which gives rise to speculation on the relationship between the phenomenon of terrorism and the process of neoliberal globalization.

Parallel to this, the recent exponential growth of migration movements is another indicator of the repercussion of this type of agency that transcends the state. Today, due to some factors, such displacements are particularly directed towards Europe, largely resulting from armed conflicts and economic conditions of exploitation. To this case may be added similar examples such as the flight of Rohingya Muslim communities in Myanmar (a.k.a. Burma), the ongoing population exodus in Venezuela, and the tension between Mexico and the United States. The imminence of an ecological catastrophe is another continuous and overwhelming transnational issue, with new records of average global warming registered between 2013 and 2015.

Events such as the Fukushima nuclear meltdown or the Gulf of Mexico oil spill show how urgent it is to rethink the economic model centered on the harmful and dangerous energy patterns of today. One may also mention the correlation between the ecological and economic situation and the migration movements. If global warming is not stopped or, ideally, reversed, the rising sea level will have enormous effects on densely populated areas of the planet, causing the relocation of several population centers. The ensuing change in predominant systems of production and circulation of wealth would cause unprecedented pressure on remaining habitable areas, potentially igniting new conflicts for the control of said areas.

If we adopt a broad conception of ecosystem, which includes not only the relationship of humanity to nature but also an entire network of interdependencies between ecological, economic, and social structures, the impacts of the current situation become evident. The planet is being

e obter poder. Também no contexto simbólico do chamado Sul global, essa reconfiguração tem consequências profundas. A dinâmica de ascensão dos chamados BRICS foi desafiada, não só pela desaceleração do crescimento econômico chinês, indiano e russo, mas também pelas convulsões políticas e articulações econômicas que têm marcado, por exemplo, o contexto brasileiro. Mais recentemente, países como a Turquia foram cenário de intensos conflitos, que também desestabilizaram sua posição no palco internacional.

Para além do Estado, outros agentes têm vindo progressivamente afirmar sua presença em nível global, sendo plausível questionar se essa figura coletiva ainda é a fonte primária de poder no contexto geopolítico de hoje. O caso das empresas multinacionais não é novidade, assim como a ação de organizações terroristas. No entanto, ambos têm aumentado o âmbito e a escala de suas atividades. O desenvolvimento exponencial da comunicação móvel, por meio de computadores portáteis, celulares e tablets, associado à disseminação generalizada da internet, abriu todo um novo território de atuação, com impactos duradouros, e estimulou a criação de redes que, embora dispersas geograficamente, se encontram em contato permanente. O poder de empresas como Alphabet (que inclui a Google) e Apple, e a emergência de grupos como a Al-Qaeda ou o autoproclamado Estado Islâmico (também conhecido como Isis ou Daesh) são alguns dos sinais mais visíveis desse movimento, o que abre espaço para uma especulação sobre a relação entre o fenômeno terrorista e o processo de globalização neoliberal.

Em paralelo, o recente crescimento exponencial dos movimentos migratórios é outro indicador da repercussão desse tipo de agências que transcendem o Estado. Hoje, em função de uma série de fatores, esses deslocamentos estão particularmente orientados em direção à Europa, resultando, em grande parte, de conflitos armados e condições econômicas de exploração. A esse caso podem ser acrescentados exemplos próximos, como a fuga da etnia muçulmana rohingya, em Mianmar (também conhecido como Birmânia), o êxodo populacional em curso na Venezuela e a tensão entre México e Estados Unidos. A iminência de uma catástrofe ecológica é outra questão transnacional que continua a exacerbar-se, com novos recordes de aquecimento médio em nível global registrados entre 2013 e 2015. Eventos como o desastre nuclear de Fukushima ou o derramamento de petróleo do Golfo do México assinalam a urgência de repensar o modelo econômico centrado em padrões energéticos nefastos e perigosos que define os dias de hoje. Pode-se ainda mencionar a correlação entre contexto ecológico e econômico, e movimentos migratórios. Se o aquecimento global não for interrompido ou, idealmente, revertido, a subida progressiva do nível do mar terá enormes efeitos em áreas densamente habitadas do planeta, provocando transferências de vários núcleos populacionais. À consequente mudança dos sistemas de produção e circulação de riqueza predominantes, corresponderia uma pressão inédita sobre as áreas habitáveis que perdurarem, possibilitando o acender de novos conflitos pelo controle dessas áreas.
