Learn. Serve. Connect. Thrive. It’s all about involving you. Based on our surveys, talking with current program participants, and researching other successful adult community education programs, we are enhancing how we involve and support adult learners in our community. LEARN. SERVE. CONNECT. It’s our new vision for adult programming here in Edina Community Education. Our Community Involvement Team brings together resources designed to support adult learners as they strive to stay engaged, sharpen their skills, and meet the evolving challenges and opportunities of our modern and thriving community. LEARN Our programming meets the needs of adult learners with opportunities ranging from adult basic education, cooking and fitness to global languages, 21st century technology, and career exploration. Take some time to read through this catalog and find a class or opportunity that speaks to you. SERVE The use of community volunteers in our schools has been identified as a crucial strategy in our efforts to create the next generation of Edina Public Schools. We are expanding our volunteer program to include more options for community members to make a difference for our students. CONNECT The Edina Resource Center connects residents to community information, resources and services. Our goal is to increase awareness and utilization of the resources available, and help all residents feel welcome in our community. A definition of community that really resonates with me is this: “Community is where they know your name, and miss you when you’re not there.” Our programs—and our community—aren’t complete without you! Please stop by and introduce yourself.

Our Advisory Councils have long been a crucial asset in helping us assess community needs and evaluate our programming. These councils have traditionally met monthly, in person, here in the Edina Community Center. This winter, we’re piloting a new kind of advisory council, one that we think will allow us to involve more voices, include more diverse perspectives, and provide more timely and frequent feedback as we develop and evaluate our programming. We’re calling it our “Just-In Time Advisory Council,” and we hope you will be a part of it! Here’s what you can expect: as a member of our Just-In-Time Advisory Council, you won’t be coming to a lot of meetings. Instead, two or three times a month you can expect a message via email, asking you to complete a quick (5 minute or less) survey on topics ranging from “Which cover photo do you think best tells our story?” to “Do you think this course proposal would fill a need for your friends and family?” to “What is a class that you would most like to take this winter?” That’s it! You can make a real difference for our program even while you’re wearing your pajamas! To join this pilot group, you can register online (click to edina.thatscommunityed. com and search for “advisory council”), or call 952-848-3952.

Employee Fraud Prevention for Small Businesses

Pump Up Your Presentations: PowerPoint Boot Camp

Writing to Engage and Inform

 Many small businesses are vulnerable to fraud because they lack properly segregated accounting functions. However, small businesses can reduce their fraud risk by implementing the practical fraud prevention techniques you will learn in this course.

 Are your PowerPoint presentations weak? Want to learn how to incorporate animation, video, and audio—and really engage your audience? By the end of this class, you’ll know how to build strong presentations that you’ll be less likely to read to your audience—the number one PowerPoint mistake. Start 2014 with new skills, a PowerPoint easy reference guide, and some key presentation tips.

 Does your blog lack focus? Is your web content disorganized? Do you hate producing reports at work? Technical and professional writing is the prose we use most. Increase your facility in explaining the whys and how-tos of your business to customers and colleagues. Learn to build an argument, move a piece forward, and hone your word count. Apply the tricks of the writing trade to your trade, develop a writing rhythm, and share editing with your classmates. Bring a pen and a piece of writing that you enjoy from your field and genre.

The mission of Edina Public Schools is to educate lifelong learners with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing, culturally diverse, global society. Edina Community Education offers opportunities for families and individuals to explore global culture right here in the Edina Community Center. Of course, you won’t get to know a complex country with just one class. But we think that if you make time to telescope down and explore one small element of a country— from Bollywood film to Women in Islam, from Crime and Punishment to Spanish language classes, from chutneys and piroshkies to kettlebells, yoga and tai chi—you can continue to develop your own kaleidoscopic understanding of our endlessly fascinating, colorfully connected world.

Global Introduction to Bollywood Film

Chinese New Year Movie Night: Go Grandriders!  Bring a bag of popcorn and celebrate Chinese New Year with us as we watch Hua Tien-hao’s acclaimed documentary, “Go Grandriders.” This uplifting film—voted best documentary by the audience at this year’s Asian American International Film Festival (AAIFF) in New York, and winner of the Balinale International Film Festival— chronicles a thirteen day, 730-mile motorcycle journey around Taiwan undertaken by seventeen elders whose average age is 81. In addition to glimpses of the countryside, you’ll learn a little bit about Chinese culture through the group, whose members include a former kamikaze pilot instructor, a widower who devotedly makes pilgrimages to his wife’s grave and asks her permission to take part in the ride, a calligraphy expert, military veterans who fought on opposite sides during World War II, and a cancer survivor who undertakes the journey as a second honeymoon with her husband. Will you still dare to dream this big when you are 80?

 Hindi-language cinema (informally known as Bollywood) is the largest segment of Indian cinema, which in turn is the most-watched cinema in the world. In 2013, Bollywood celebrated its 100th year in existence. Bollywood films are known for their handsome heroes and gorgeous heroines dressed in a rainbow of colors and lights, a stunning lack of violence and blood, their stories drawn from a history 5000 years in the making, and wonderful music that dares you not to dance along with the actors. Relish the crazy mash-ups that happen when Indian traditional culture mixes with western popculture, for Bollywood, like all art forms, is a marvelous reflection of how a culture grapples with the issues of tradition and progress, change and identity, reality and fantasy, love and despair. This big-screen genre is a great way to introduce yourself to the rich and complex history and culture of one of Earth’s most populous countries. Join us as we dive into this eminently watchable world!

The Romanovs: Reality and Myth Museum of Russian Art  For 400 years, the Romanov family provided tsars for the Russian state and church, while the rest of its family members played vital roles elsewhere in society. Power of Parents, It’s Your Influence  The younger people are when they first become intoxicated, the greater the likelihood they will have alcohol dependence later in life and will engage in other risky behaviors. Modern Board games

Modern Board Games: Overview

I love watching students grow and learn enough to start to become defensive in their play. That’s when it really gets fun!” —Rita Goodmanson

 Board games have a long history, stretching back through centuries. But by the late 20th century, board games had waned in popularity, especially in the United States. Then in 1995, Settlers of Catan burst out of Germany, and the world saw what a modern board game could be. Join us for a broad overview of modern board games. What are they, and what makes them different from Sorry! or Candy Land? Why are they growing so fast in popularity? What 21st century skills can you practice while playing these games? Problem solving? Creativity? Diplomacy? Join us for a chance to try out a few popular modern games that sound interesting to you, your friends and family. Instructor Adam Duffy has provided technical support in the Department of Media and Technology for Edina Public Schools for over 9 years. He is also an avid fan of board and card games, with over 30 games in his personal collection. His favorite games currently include Le Havre, The Castles of Burgundy, and Race for the Galaxy.

Games

Play Mahjong!  Skill, strategy, calculation and a certain degree of luck – that’s the popular Chinese game of Mahjong. This game of “tiles,” rather than modern playing cards, is interesting and fun, social, and can be very competitive! Instructor Rita Goodmanson first learned to play Chinese-style mahjong on a 6-week trip to Australia. Back at home, she began studying American-style mahjong, and has been playing “for quite a while.” She enjoys introducing her students to the strategy of the game. Instructor Kuang-yu Chien is a native Chinese speaker who grew up in Taiwan. Recently she retired from her high-pressure IT career, and now enjoys more fun and relaxing work. Kuangyu feels that Mahjong is not only a fun game, but a great way to stimulate the brain.

Intro to Pilates

Pilates Core Strength

 Have you been curious about Pilates? Have you heard about the amazing benefits of this form of exercise? This is a great place to start. Learn the basics of Pilates movements, exercises and alignment. Bring your brain and body, and prepare to move with intelligence.

 Combine Pilates and core strength exercises for an amazing workout. We begin with a basic Pilates warm-up, move to a strengthening phase for the middle of our workout (weights optional) and end with a strong Pilates finish. You’ll use large balls, bands and weights to maximize your workout.

Instructor Joan Mielke Nimerfroh is an ACE Gold certified fitness instructor and trainer with over 28 years of experience. She attained a complete certification thru STOTT Pilates, and is one of the few Twin Cities instructors trained by Moria Stott Merrithew. She enjoys golf, gardening and functional movement.

Weights and Circuit Training  Develop your all-around muscle strength through circuit training. We use the resistance machines and free weights in the basement of the Edina Community Center (the same ones used by Edina student athletes). Find a routine that meets your needs, and work at your own pace. We end our workout with group exercises focusing on our abs. Join our supportive community of adults committed to healthy living, to each other, and to building community! She played hockey for the University of St. Thomas women’s hockey team, and now plays rugby for a Minnesota women’s league. Looking for a mindful, flowing and creative practice? You’ve found it! Our intermediate-level yoga class is more challenging than a gentle class, but includes modifications of many basic, foundational poses to ensure safety and enjoyment. Learn to listen to your own body as you are guided through a series of asanas (postures), pranayama (breathwork) and meditation. Kripalu yoga uses smooth transitions and proper alignment principles informed by an in-depth understanding of anatomy to learn body awareness.

Yoga from the Very Beginning

Yoga Asanas for Beginners and Advanced Beginners

 Looking for an experiential introduction to the basic principles of Yoga, including asana (postures), pranayama (breathing), and meditation? Geared for people with little to no prior experience with Yoga, those looking for a gentler, more therapeutic practice, or for experienced yogis interested in reconnecting with some of the basics of alignment and Yoga philosophy, this 75-minute class will guide you gently through flowing postures to enhance flexibility, strength, and balance. You will be invited to cultivate compassionate self-awareness and will leave feeling a greater sense of ease in your body, balance of mind and a deeper connection to your true, authentic self.

 This class will give you a thorough understanding of basic asanas (poses) in yoga, taught with careful attention to body alignment. Props such as blocks, straps, and bolsters are used to encourage proper and beneficial practice. The class opens with a short meditation, followed by a fun combination of poses that will heat up the body, increase the heart rate and encourage flexibility. Cooling poses then lead into a relaxation exercise. Continuing yoga students will be given options for deepening and challenging their practice.

Tai Chi Beginning Tai Chi: Meditation and Ruler  Based on ancient Chinese practices, Tai Chi is a set of universal principles that summarize the rules that govern things of change in this world. These rules are a reflection of intimate human experiences and knowledge about human conditions accumulated over the past 5,000 years. Tai Chi exercises were created based on these theories and have been proven to help reduce stress, improve balance, increase energy level and build or recover good health, which ultimately lead to quality life and longevity. Join us for this beginner course designed to build a proper foundation for an enlightening and transforming lifelong practice. An avid supporter of Tai Chi and other integrative medical solutions, Sifu Yang Ye pays close attention to many evidence-based scientific studies of the effects and benefits of Tai Chi and other alternative interventions, in particular those conducted or identified by Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He is constantly thinking of ways to incorporate proven medical research into the practice and theory of Tai Chi, bringing this old mindfulness practice into the 21st century to the greater benefits of all people. 5022-W01 Mondays, Jan 13 - Mar 24 Edina Community Center No Class Jan 20 & Feb 17
