Health Habits for a Healthier You
At any age, there are lifestyle habits we can adopt to help maintain or even potentially improve our health. These habits may also help to keep our brains healthy as we age and possibly delay the onset of cognitive decline. To help people age well, the Alzheimer’s Association® is offering this workshop that covers four areas of lifestyle habits that are associated with healthy aging:
• Cognitive activity • Physical health and exercise • Diet and nutrition • Social engagement
Note: this program is not intended for individuals already involved in caregiving for someone with dementia or for someone with a diagnosis of dementia – it is designed for the general public. Alzheimer’s: Understanding and Responding to DementiaRelated Behavior
During the middle stage of dementia, the person with the disease often starts to exhibit new behaviors that can be confusing for a caregiver. These behaviors are a form of communication, and are essential to understanding the needs of the person with dementia. To help caregivers decipher behaviors and determine how best to respond, the Alzheimer’s Association offers this program. By the end of the session, attendees will be able to identify common triggers for behaviors associated with dementia, explain the process for assessing and identifying challenging behaviors, and list strategies to address some common dementia-related behaviors. Treat yourself! De-stress from your week with a yoga class focused on gentle movement and relaxation. Restorative yoga facilitates a deep relaxation of the body, nervous system, and mind. Gentle warm-up stretches reduce muscle tension, and yoga poses are held for 3 minutes or more, fully supported by cushions, blankets, and blocks. During this process, the body and mind slow down, release stress, and enter a state of deep relaxation. The props allow your body to open through passive stretching, leaving you feeling refreshed and restored, nurtured and balanced. The class will incorporate deep breathing, relaxation techniques, mindfulness practices, and visualization. Restorative yoga offers a welcome respite from the fast pace and stresses of daily life. It provides rejuvenation and healing for body, mind, and spirit, and can be very helpful for those recovering from illness and injury. Bring a bed pillow and a blanket. During deep relaxation, all the organ systems of the body are benefited. A few of the measurable results of deep relaxation are reduced blood pressure, serum triglycerides and blood sugar levels, reduced muscle tension, increased levels of “good cholesterol,” and improvement in digestion, fertility, elimination, insomnia and fatigue. Instructor Wendy Anderson. 5023-WS01 13 Sessions - $143 Saturdays, Jan 9 - Apr 2 10:45am-12:00pm Edina Community Center Studio 335 5023-WS02 9 Sessions - $99 Saturdays, Apr 9 - Jun 4 10:45am-12:00pm Edina Community Center Studio 335
