Free Autumn/Winter Catalogue 2013/14

WINTER RIDING: IT’S A BLAST As we write this introduction to our Autumn/Winter catalogue, we are into the second week of October. After one of the warmest summers on record it’s a wee shock to check the weather forecast and hear the first seasonal warning of possible snow on the A9’s Drumochter Pass. However, we believe that riding bikes is a yearround pleasure and that a few small adjustments help ensure that winter riding can be a blast too. Natty 3/4s might make way for full-length longs and full-fingered gloves replace fingerless track mitts. Cosy merino can complement the wicking polyester base layer. Consider changing your summer tyres for grippier treads. Get back into the habit of carrying a set of lights. You are now prepared for the cooler end of the year.

Same goes for our shops which are now moving into winter mode. This involves poring over the new 2014 ranges and selecting the bicycles and equipment that we believe will be of genuine interest and value to you, our customers. This 2014 equipment is flooding into our shops right now, so we thought the least we could do is create a catalogue to introduce you to the highlights. These include a new generation of LED lights, particularly dedicated to getting you seen in town, and a new category of ‘gravel grinder’ commuter road bikes that won’t be put off by challenging conditions - all in the interest of persuading more and more folk that it really is a blast to get out on the bike when the weather turns ‘a bit fresher’, as we say up here in the North.

giant revolt 2 £799

giant invite 2 w £849

DON’T PUT UP WITH LESS VERSATILE ROAD BIKES. REVOLT!

GIANT’S NEW ROAD BIKE INVITES YOU TO EXPLORE FARTHER

The Giant Aluxx-SL double butted 6011 frame with its tight rear triangle ensure a sprightly ride on road, as does the lightweight carbon fork. The bike’s mudguard compatibility and Giant’s own P-RX2 puncture-resistant 700x35 tyres ensure the Revolt 2 is equally fit for gravel tracks. Its SRAM BB5 disc brakes can be operated from either the Shimano Claris STI drop bar levers or the Tektro bar-top levers.

The Invite, like the Giant Revolt, is built on an exquisite lightweight Aluxx-SL frame with a carbon Composite fork. However Giant believe in conceiving their women’s bikes from scratch, rather than simply taking a gents’ bike and ‘shrinking and pinking’ it. That's why they equip the Invite 2 with better quality, wider-range Shimano Sora 3x9 gears; narrower bars for a more comfortable hand hold and 70x32 tyres that roll that bit faster.

BLASTING ALONG THE ROAD. HEART RACING. CHASING DOWN THE CAR IN FRONT. WILLING THE LIGHTS TO STAY GREEN. SOD THIS. TIME FOR AN OFF-ROAD DETOUR. The notion that great minds think alike gains credence when you see three of our favourite bike brands independently releasing a new style of road bike. Specialized call theirs an endurance road bike. Whyte suggest disc road bike. Our vote goes to Giant who use the term, gravel grinder, in their 2014 catalogue. What unites all these bicycles is that they are fundamentally fast road bikes, made more practical for real world use where you have to or choose to take the rough roads with the smooth, hence the wider-treaded gravel-capable 700c tyres

on every model. If you’re a mountain biker used to disc brake performance and low maintenance reliability, you’ll be delighted to see all our gravel grinders are disc equipped. If you’re a road biker looking for a winter commuter, you’ll appreciate the bikes’ familiar drop bars and their mudguard eyelets. If you want just one bike that will do near-anything, whilst retaining a bit of zip, you’ll enjoy these bikes so much, you’ll find yourself pedaling along singing the Nick Lowe classic, True Love Travels on a Gravel Road.

THEIR DEBUT ROAD DISC BIKE IS ANOTHER WHYTE WINNER

SPECIALIZED’S BEST COBBLE-BASHING SECTEUR TO DATE

Famed for their obsession with getting their frame geometry just right, it’s significant that Whyte’s debut RD (road disc) hydroformed alloy frame is built with the 72-73˚ head / 73-74.5˚ seat tube angles of a classic road bike. Equipped with a Shimano Tiagra 2x10 transmission and Maxxis Detonator 700x28 tyres, the happy result is a bike with the fast-steering agility and acceleration potential of a proper road bike.

A departure from previous Specialized Secteurs that came with 700x25 tyres and caliper brakes, this all new model comes with 700x30 tyres and Avid BB5 disc brakes, along with more familiar Specialized ‘endurance road’ bike features such as Zertz carbon forks and Compliance Plus seatstays. It’s fitting that Specialized named this bike after the cobble stone secteurs of Paris-Roubaix: Europe’s most punishing one-day road race.

SPECIALIZED TRICROSS TRIPLE £750

GIANT TCX 2 £999

SPECIALIZED’S PIONEERING COMMUTER ROAD BIKE

BUILT ON AN ALL-NEW CYCLO-CROSS RACE-READY FRAME

The name of this bike, plus its internal cable routing and flattened top tube to facilitate shouldering, inform you that this bike was inspired by cyclo-cross. Specialized use the term freeroad to evoke the fact that the Tricross is a fast road bike that gives you the freedom to roam farther, courtesy of its wider, more rugged 700x32 tyres and its mudguard and rack compatibility.

A true cyclo-cross race bike (the only bike in this hybrid section that won’t take full mudguards), the TCX SLR’s fast, lively feel comes courtesy of its all-new triple butted frame’s 20% thinner tube walls, yet it boasts the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any Giant aluminium frame, ever. Shimano 105 2x10 gear shifting and TRP’s amazing new Spyre disc brakes (with cable-actuated hydraulic calipers!) complete one awesome package.

FOCUS MARES AX 5.0 DISC £999

GENESIS CROIX DE FER £1,149

BEST FOCUS CROSS AT BIKE TO WORK-FRIENDLY PRICE

DESERVEDLY, GENESIS MOST POPULAR BICYCLE

A grand would not be an unrealistic price to pay for a bike with triple butted alloy frame, carbon fork, Shimano Deore disc brakes and Tiagra 2x10 transmission. The fact that this Focus also comes with full mudguards and an advanced lighting system, pairing a dynohub-powered Axa Pico 30 lumen front light (free front lighting for ever!) and a Fi’zi:k battery-powered rear LED, makes the Mares AX 5.0 an especially commuter-friendly bargain.

Genesis are a British company so its fitting that this frame is built with lightweight, resilient Reynolds 725 heat-treated butted CrMo steel tubing. Launched five years ago, the Croix de Fer is a bike that inspires adventure, such as Vin Cox’s fastest ride round the world in 176 days in 2010. This year’s spec highlights include Shimano Tiagra 2x10 shifting, while its Hayes rear disc brake is inboard mounted to facilitate fitting a pannier rack.

CHARGE PLUG 5 £1,599

GENESIS CROIX DE FER 931 £1,999

BRITISH DESIGN + JAPANESE TUBING + SRAM HYDRAULICS

STAINLESS STEEL FRAME CREATES A MORE POLISHED RIDE

Charge are a British company with a great knack for producing truly different bikes. The Charge Plug’s frame is built with Japan’s finest Tange Prestige double butted CrMo steel tubing. SRAM’s new HRD700/Rival groupset twins positive 2x10 shifting with the indisputable benefits of hydraulic disc brakes (control, stopping power and low maintenance). Suddenly, that rare creature, a road bike with hydraulic disc brakes, has become more accessible.

Carbon, titanium, aluminium? Who needs them? The exotic frame material for 2014 is Reynolds 931 stainless steel: polished, not painted. Stainless steel was once deemed too heavy for bike frame production. Reynolds new hardening process enabled them to make the tube walls as thin as 0.4mm to create a beautifully light, lively frame (pro tested by Team Madison/Genesis on their Volare race bikes) so you can be confident it will hold up.

Windproof on the back, our comfortable low-bulk gloves help guarantee warm hands, even on daring December downhills, yet they are light enough to not overheat your hands on warm autumnal afternoons. Revolution silicone star & tyre icons on the palms and fingers ensure a non-slip grip.

This is the best bar/stem mounted phone holder we have seen. You can opt for an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy-specific model or a Universal mount. The mount is guaranteed not to eject your phone, even if you ride Danny MacAskill style. Its silicone skin protects the phone from water and shock, yet it doesn’t prevent you scrolling or taking pics on the move.

Most of our gravel grinder / cross / commuter bikes take full mudguards. However, if you hate the idea of encumbering your new lightweight bike with a 600-700g set of fenders, attaching this 14g mud flap to your saddle rails goes some way to saving your sorry ass from a soaking when you ride wet roads. he Cycle to Work Scheme is a legal tax-efficient incentive that enables you to enjoy serious savings off the price of a new bicycle (plus related safety equipment such as a helmet and a set of lights). Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op’s own scheme is called Bike to Work. We have nine year’s experience offering our Scheme to the staff of more than 1,000 organisations, ranging from the smallest businesses to the largest local councils and universities. Employers appreciate our streamlined process because it means staff get their bikes with minimal delay. Employees also appreciate our scheme because staff are entitled to take full advantage of any sales, discounts or special offers available from Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op when they order the bike.

NO BIKE TO WORK SCHEME AT YOUR WORKPLACE? WHAT TO DO NEXT. The Bike to Work Scheme is a unique staff benefit in that it also saves employers money. Urge your employer to visit edinburghbicycle.com/biketowork where they will discover how easy it is to introduce a Bike to Work Scheme at your workplace. Alternatively, you can go on the website yourself and request our Bike to Work Scheme brochure for you to pass on to your employer. If you have any specific queries, feel free to email our dedicated Bike to Work team any time at: biketowork@edinburghbicycle.com

WE ALSO TAKE CYCLESCHEME CERTIFICATES Many employers operate their Cycle to Work Scheme via an agency called Cyclescheme. If that’s the case at your workplace, you can redeem Cyclescheme Certificates at any branch of Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op. If there is no Bike Co-op branch near you (yet) you can still order your Cyclescheme bike from us if you phone our online team on 0845 257 0808 or 0131 331 5010.

CLOTHING & ACCESSORIES You can also make serious savings on cycle clothing and accessories (and spread the cost) whether or not you order a new bike on the scheme. Any item purchased through the scheme must be ‘cycle safety equipment’. In practice, this category takes in a very broad range of cycle equipment and includes any clothing with reflective trim, panniers, racks, bungees, pumps, tools, child seats, helmets, bells, lights, mudguards, mirrors and locks.

AWARD WINNING BICYCLES

Britain’s most popular monthly cycling magazine, Cycling Plus, took the 40 road bikes that had impressed them the most in 2013 and tested them head to head to select their Bike of The Year. For the second time in five years, they chose a Giant - the Defy Advanced 2. No other bike company has won this accolade more than once. Their 5/5 verdict: ‘Giant’s designers have pulled off some sort of alchemy, as the Defy perfectly balances comfort with excitement.... We’d go as far as to say that the Defy Advanced is the finest sportive/ endurance frameset ever created.’

This February, Cycling Plus repeated the test but limited it to endurance road bikes below £1,000. They selected the Giant Defy 1, hailing it as ‘the best riding bike we know of at this price point…its superb chassis creates a responsive but flowing ride backed up by balanced handling and excellent components’. Our own experience of the Defy (and the women’s equivalent Avail) is that every one of the 20 bikes that comprise these ranges, starting at £499, is a strong contender for best buy at its price point.

5.3kg focus launch THEIR lightest bike EVER When Focus unveiled the 5.3kg Izalco Max 0.0 at Eurobike in August 2013, our buyers checked the claimed weight on their own digital scales. The result was the same. To put a 5.3kg (11.7lb) bike in context, that’s half the weight most of us would consider lightweight.

In the past we’ve seen the odd one-off, 5-figure, super-light bicycle. That’s not the Focus way. The Izalco Max 0.0 is a production bike you can order from our shops and website, safe in the knowledge that its 760g frame & 295g fork will be identical to the ones that helped power Focus AG2R to second team place in this year’s Tour de France. What’s special about Focus is that they maintain this philosophy of making world class bikes more accessible throughout their range.

For instance, every Focus bicycle in both their Izalco Team SL and their Cayo Evo road bike ranges (right down to the £1,399 105-equipped model) is built on a UCI-registered Grand Tour-proven carbon frame. Specialized have an unerring knack of producing the very best bikes and equipment. Then once their pro-quality S-Works technology is proven at the highest level by the likes of Mark Cavendish, they concentrate their considerable focus on making more affordable versions for us mere mortals. The great thing about Specialized is that their more accessibly-priced bikes and equipment retain the key benefits of the crazy-expensive originals. engineered to be the world’s fastest and lightest bikes Cervélo Cycles was launched in 1995 by two engineers working from a garage. Their mission? To create the world’s fastest, lightest road race and time trial frames. Cervélo has since grown into a bike company where the number of CAD /FEA analysts and aerodynamics engineers they employ outnumber the number of bike frames in their catalogue. In 2003 Cervélo forged a partnership with CSC/Saxobank

which culminated in Carlos Sastre’s Tour victory in 2008. Cervélo’s reputation continued to grow with the creation of their own Test Team in 2009 which morphed into Garmin-Cervélo in 2011 - the year their rider, Johan Van Summeren won Paris-Roubaix. Cervélo are renowned for producing one product group - the fastest and lightest frames for the top pros. Cervélo don’t do entry level.

The hot news for 2014 is that Cervélo will, for the first time, be building complete bikes for the general public - each one assembled by a pro mechanic at their state-of-the-art facility in the Netherlands. Even more mouth watering is the fact that complete Cervélo bikes will be competitively priced, and available to order from us.

GREAT PRICE FOR A CANNONDALE ENDURANCE ROAD BIKE

ZERTZ ALLOY STAYS & CARBON FORK = EXTRA COMFORT

Cannondale created the Synapse Alu so you could enjoy a bike that came close to offering the speed and comfort of their Synapse carbon bikes, but be spared the 4-figure price. It’s a bike that will encourage you to take more scenic routes home on the daily commute. Or you can take it on charity rides, confident in the knowledge that its wide (50/34 x 11-32) range Shimano Claris STI 2x8 gearing will help ensure you will arrive at the finish in fine fettle.

The sportive-friendly Dolce has deservedly been our best selling women’s road bike over the past 10 years. This is the first bike in this year’s Dolce range where both fork and seatstays are inlaid with Zertz shock absorbers - usually reserved for Specialized’s £1,300+ Ruby range. To celebrate its 10th birthday this Dolce comes equipped with a pair of bottle cages and a seatpack, both colour coordinated with the plush gel-padded Roubaix bar tape.

ITALIAN RACING HERITAGE MADE MORE AFFORDABLE

BEST BUY FULL CARBON FRAME & FORK ULTEGRA-EQUIPPED

This pure road bike boasts fundamentally the same full carbon monocoque Wilier Izoard XP frame, proven in major Tours by Team Lampre. The frame & fork alone retailed for £1,100 last year. Today, you can get the complete bike, very respectably equipped with Shimano 105 / Tiagra 2x10 gearing and Shimano R501 wheels, for little more. The Wilier Izoard XP 105 is clearly one of this year’s indisputable best buys in carbon road bikes.

Being the biggest bicycle company in the world has it’s advantages in that it enables Giant to create a full carbon Defy frame and fork, and equip it with Shimano’s fab new Ultegra 2x11 shifters at this price. The result in Giant’s own words is a bike that ‘performs, climbs, descends and sprints - all day long. With its longer wheelbase and taller head tube, the Defy Composite’s lightweight smooth riding feel makes the road disappear.’

focus izalco team sl 4.0 cp £2,499

WILL INSPIRE YOU TO RIDE THE ROADS OF THE GRAND TOURS

UCI-REGISTERED FRAME & FORK + SRAM FORCE 22 GRUPPO

Given that the Gran Turismo (GTR) started at £3,000 (and the frame alone set you back £1,500) when Wilier launched this line in 2011, this GTR is another contender for best buy in carbon road bikes. Its classic road (not compact) geometry creates a bike built for speed and comfort over the long 150-200km stages of a Grand Tour or etape. The frame’s ‘pencil’ seatstays go a long way to taking the edge off when the roads get less than smooth.

UCI-registered means this is a pure road bike, built on exactly the same Izalco Team SL frame and fork that Focus AG2R rode to 2nd place in the Team Classification in the 2013 Tour. That’s significant because it’s common practice for bike companies to reserve their best carbon for their £4,000+ race frames and use a less exotic Toray filament, which won’t offer quite the same strength-tolightness ratio, for their entry-level carbon bikes.

AERO ROAD BIKES PUNCHING INTO A HEADWIND. LEGS BURNING WITH EVERY CRANK TURN. IT’S TOUGH AT THE FRONT. TIME TO CONSIDER AERO.

giant propel advanCed 3 £1,999

Cervélo s2 105 £1,899

WANT A BIKE THAT WILL PROPEL YOU TO GREATER SPEEDS?

CERVéLO’S PIONEERING CARBON AERO ROAD BIKE

The 7-grand Giant Propel Advanced SL was hailed by Velo News in August 2013 as the fastest and most aerodynamic bike they had ever tested in both wind tunnel and lab. This comparatively modestly priced Giant Propel Advanced 3 retains its key features. Its Advanced Grade Composite frame tubes are AeroSystem shaped to maximise aerodynamic efficiency. Its brakes nestle behind the fork and seatstays to smooth airflow.

There was a time when aero/time trial/triathlon bikes, with their aero bars and full disc wheels, were totally specialist bikes you dared not ride in a cross wind. The great thing about the bikes on these pages, pioneered by the Cervélo S2, is that they are all UCI-compliant, made to be ridden by any rider who appreciates a bike, which Bicycling described as ‘so fast on flat terrain it routinely entices you to throw out your plans for an easy spin’.

THE FUTURE IS AERODYNAMIC

T

he factors that slow you down most on any ride are gravity and wind resistance. Cervélo, who have San Diego Air & Space Center’s wind tunnel testing facilities at their disposal, calculated that aero drag is the cyclist’s most significant speed inhibitor 80-90% of the time (exception being on inclines steeper than 5%). They also found that while the bicycle accounts for 20% of this resistance, the rider accounts for 80%. In other words, the body of the most finely honed cyclist is - to put it in aerodynamic

terminology - a wind-catching blob. The benefits of aero bikes are therefore two-fold. First, the bike will slip through the air with less resistance. Second, it encourages the rider to adopt a position that makes him or her more streamlined and less like Mr or Mrs Blobby. This drag factor becomes more significant the faster you ride so it’s tempting to assume that aero bikes are only of interest to elite pros who can maintain a steady 40km/h and thus gain maximum benefit from the bike’s aerodynamic efficiency.

Cervélo’s testing has shown that even club riders can benefit from being more aero. Cyclists on standard road bikes, who averaged 30km/h (18MPH) on a 20km time trial, could drop their time from 40 minutes to 38:13 if they switched to aero bikes and wore aero helmets. (And yes, the test riders were power monitored for constant Watt output on both bikes.) An analogy that comes to mind is that just as tennis pros refer to their unreturnable serves as ‘free points’, an aero bike rewards the rider with ‘free miles’.

specialized venge elite £2,300

Cervélo s3 ultEGRA £3,299

IF IT’S GOOD ENOUGH FOR MARK CAVENDISH

CERVéLO’S FASTEST AERO ROAD BIKE WITH ULTEGRA 2x11

The Venge fuses elements of Specialized’s Tour-wining Tarmac with their Shiv time trial/triathlon design to create a bike that achieves an optimal balance of light weight, stiffness and aerodynamics. The clever thing about the Venge is that its aerodynamic advantage doesn’t just come into play when riding into a headwind. You will still experience its benefits when the wind’s coming at you from a typical 30 degree angle.

Cervélo’s unique asymmetric BBRight bottom bracket shell, oversized on the non drive side to maximises power output from the cold forged Rotor 3DF 52/36 crankset, helps Cervélo create their stiffest, fastest aero road bike. Comfort is retained, courtesy of the even thinner seat stays, which help keep the frame weight around the magic 1,000g mark. The airfoil-like seat tube helps shields the spinning rear wheel from the wind.

YOU WOULDN’T RIDE A BIKE THAT WAS MORE THAN 50% YOUR WEIGHT. WE BELIEVE KIDS SHOULDN’T HAVE TO EITHER.

introducing frog bikes Frog is a British bicycle company with a mission to create the best kids’ bikes they can. The couple who created Frog bikes are parents of young cyclists themselves. Being cycling enthusiasts, they know that if a bike is to delight, a good place to start is to make sure it’s as light as possible and that it fits properly. This is even more true for children than it is for adults. Growing kids are going to have problems if asked to pedal and manoeuvre bikes that are more than half their weight (sadly this happens). That’s why we are proud to introduce a company that is committed to one goal - making cycling a pleasure from the start. The Frog range covers every children’s age group from toddlers to youth. To read more about Frog and view our full Frog range, visit edinburghbicycle.com.

Like most better kids’ bikes, every Frog bike has an aluminium frame and wheel rims. What makes Frog stand out is that their forks, hubs, bars, stems, seatposts, V-brakes & levers are all alloy too. This makes Frog bikes kilos lighter. To make them easier to get up to speed, the Frogs on this page roll on 1.5”-wide hybrid tyres rather than 2” MTB knobblies. To keep ‘em clean they come supplied with mudguards.

MEASURE UP THE FROG WAY With any bike, adult or kids, specification is important but fit is everything. A factor that endeared us to Frog is that their bikes are sized by leg length rather than more crude measures such as wheel size or age. This real-world sizing takes into account that a 20” wheel bike that fits a 6 year old comfortably might be too big for a cousin or friend who’s the same age. That’s why Frog (uniquely we believe) offer two 20”-wheel kids’ hybrid bikes: the Frog 52 and the Frog 55. One offers 52cm standover height, the other, 55. To find out your kid’s Frog size bring him/her along to one of our shops to try out our fun Frog Sizer, or check our edinburghbicycle.com online Frog Size Guide.

Special Edition Pudsey colour scheme In the Model T Ford-like world of single colour kids’ bikes, Frog stand out for offering a choice of at least 4 colourways for each of the 4 models shown below. Choose the Pudsey colour scheme and your Frog will boast a special edition head badge of the cheeky chap himself. Better still, £25 will go to Children in Need for every Frog Pudsey bike sold.

WHEEL

CHOICE

When choosing a mountain bike today, you might stick with a 26”- wheeler because they’ve served you well in the past. Or you might be swayed by Specialized’s XC team riders who swooped round their one hour XC test loop in 58 minutes when they switched from 26” wheel MTBs to 29ers. Or you might agree with Whyte and Giant and discover that 27.5” wheels are the perfect halfway house.

THE ORIGINAL

THE BIG GUNS

THE NEW KID ON THE BLOCK

It’s commonly accepted that the modern mountain bike was born in the 1970s when Californian cyclists such as Charlie Kelly, Joe Breeze and Gary Fisher, looking for new thrills, started organising downhill races on Mount Tamalpais trails on single-speed Schwinn cruiser bikes. These Schwinn klunkers rolled on 26x2” ballooner tyres. This size of tyre worked fine on dirt, especially when tyre makers created knobbly versions, so 26” became established as the standard for MTB tyres for the next 30 years.

A few MTB innovators, such as England’s Geoff Apps, argued that, like many international standards, the 26” MTB tyre evolved by accident. They suggested that if you were to design a mountain bike from scratch, you might discover that larger wheels roll faster once they get up to speed. Bigger tyres also offer more traction and can roll over gaps that might stall smaller wheels. Over the past 10 years many bicycle companies have reached the same conclusion and are offering 29” wheelers as a valid alternative.

While 29”wheels offer some advantages, many riders prefer 26” wheelers, which are lighter weight and whose frames & forks flex less - especially on 125mm-plus full sus bikes. Hence the evolution of 27.5” wheels. Lighter than 29ers, 27.5 wheels accelerate faster from a standing start and they are more agile on tight switchback. Larger than 26” tyres, 27.5s roll quicker and their larger contact patch delivers improved traction and obstacle ‘rollover’ so they’re the perfect compromise for many riders.

cyclists can be hard to See

F

ront bike lights have two functions - to see and to be seen. The high powered torches featured on P.35 give you a floodlit view of the road or trail ahead. They will also get you seen by traffic approaching from the other direction. However, many mega-lumen bike lights can be near invisible when viewed from the sides. For urban use, you will actually get spotted sooner from all sides with one of the less powerful but wider-angled ‘be seen’ lights featured on this page. If you would like the best of all worlds, we featuring a new generation of front lights from Moon (P.33) and Cat Eye (P.34) which balance the benefits of high power illumination with the desirability of ensuring you’ll get seen from every angle.

Every Moon light on this page has genuinely useful features such as robust rubber strap attachment, which extends your fitting options beyond bar and seatpost to bags, belts and racks. Also, the LiPo (lithium ion polymer) battery built into every Moon lamp on this page can be recharged in just 2 hours from a PC or Mac, courtesy of its lightweight, portable, plug-in USB cable.

The lens of this little Gem is only 3cm wide but its 3 LEDs pack quite a punch, shining a decent beam in front of the wheel. Side windows get you seen by traffic approaching broadside. The robust rubber ‘laddered’ strap makes it especially easy to switch the Moon Gem 2.0 between bikes.

This lamp features Chips on Board or COB. Its 10 micro-LED chips are clustered to create a long slim lighting panel, like a mini strip light. This makes for one of the most conspicuous lights we have ever had the pleasure to offer when it comes to getting you seen from every angle.

Cycling Weekly rated the Meteor front light 5/5:‘Moon is fast becoming one of our favourite bike light brands, and the Meteor only cements this further.’ Cycling Plus rated the Comet 5/5: ‘a powerful rear light that gives great visibility’.

CAT EYE VOLT 300 | VOLT 50 LED LIGHTSET £89.99 The Volt 300 lumen front lamp will tempt you to ride beyond the city limits in the confident knowledge that you will be able to ‘read’ the road or path ahead and steer clear of looming potholes after dark. The Volt 50 is ten times brighter than most rear bike lights. Its seat rail clamp is out of the way but ever available another example of Cat Eye’s design genius. Lamp casing cutaways reveal the side lenses of both Volt lamps to bestow 180˚ visibility. Either lamp is also sold individually: £49.99 each. Front: 3h/300 lumen, 8h/112Lm. Rear: 8h constant, 20h flash. Li-ion 6-hour USB rechargeable.

Cat Eye’s Japanese quality-controlled lights are among the most reliable cycling equipment we’ve had the pleasure to offer over the past 30 years. Having said that, lighting innovations from newer companies such as Lezyne have made Cat Eye’s offer look a tad dated in recent years. It is with pleasant surprise then that we can reveal that some of the most exciting new lights for 2013/14, offering industry-leading power output per £, come courtesy of Cat Eye.

WINTER CLOTHING Photo courtesy of Bike Co-op Customer: Robbie Jones

BLASTING through puddles, brakes squeAling. water exploding in every direction. for those who embrace the elements, HERE’S MUD IN YOUR EYE. Cycle clothing has come a long way since the days when all you needed for a grand day out on two wheels was a trusty tweed suit: its pockets stuffed with an ounce of your favourite tobacco and a large lump of cheese. Today’s winter clothing is all about enabling you to ride through winter in maximum comfort, warmth and style.

36

On the page opposite, we introduce you to the most advanced pro-endorsed cycling jersey we have ever had the pleasure to offer. If your needs are more modest, turn to pages 38 and 39, where our own hardy staff reveal what they wear to keep covered, head to toe.

AS WORN BY THE PROS The Gabba WS was conceived when Cervélo rider Gabriel Rasch, nicknamed Gabba, approached his team’s clothing sponsor, Castelli, to create a better jersey for the cold, wet conditions that typify the early part of the season. Gabba dreamed of a jersey that was as comfortable and form-fitting as his Castelli top, but wind and water resistant so he wouldn’t have to slow down to pull on a rain cape before long descents. Castelli delivered with the Gabba top. It worked so well, even rival riders now wear it in Spring Classics with the scorpion logo taped over so as not to offend their sponsors.

Web Ref: 16494

castelli gabba ws jersey £184.99

‘It looks pretty badass. It feels amazing and you actually have a clear performance advantage, so for a racer it’s the best thing we’ve got.’

The unique Castelli Gabba WS Jersey is made in Gore’s latest wind and waterproof 4-way-stretch Windstopper X-Lite Plus fabric. More breathable than, say, a Gore Windstopper softshell top, the Gabba WS Jersey is designed not to overheat when you ride hard on a warm day. Castelli tell us that Gabba’s optimal temperature range is up to 18 degrees centigrade. There will be few days in this country when it’s not the perfect option. Nanoflex fabric insert underarms help guarantee freedom of movement. If you need any more proof of Castelli’s attention to detail, check Gabba’s three rear pockets, eyeletted at the bottom to let rain water run out if necessary.

Whilst some water did end up getting at my feet, thanks to a puddle the size of a lake, they never got cold at any point. As a result, I still enjoyed the ride despite Armageddon weather conditions.’

‘To start with, these gloves are a very snug fit and put up a bit of a fight to get them on. Once on they are very comfortable and come the winter frosts/rain they are always my go-to glove. Thick enough to keep you warm yet not so thick as to impede you when using STI’s, a must when on the road bike! Don’t leave home without them.’

the right kit keeps out the s*!t Going out on the bike when the weather is less than fair is far less daunting when you and your bike are properly prepared. If you’ve previously put up with wheel spray whenever the ground is wet, mudguards are a revelation. Do your treads have as much grip as a politician on the skids? It’s time to switch to more puncture-resistant non-slip tyres. Suffer cold feet? Then overshoes are as essential as gloves. Just a few wee adjustments and you will discover that, properly attired, you’ll never tire of riding. Whatever the weather.

WE PUT 3 WINTER TYRES TO THE TEST

As a cyclist, it is easy to get seduced by shiny upgrades such as a more polished gear mech, so it’s easy to forget a fundamental fact about bikes. Nothing influences the riding characteristics of a bicycle more than its tyres. This eternal truth becomes even more pertinent in winter when wet weather grip becomes an issue, and when wet treads are more likely to pick up pesky penetrative objects such as glass and thorns. We thought you might therefore be interested in a test report on a selection of three of our most winter-wise tyres conducted by 3 Co-op workers.

SEE OUR FULL TYRE RANGE AT: EDINBURGHBICYCLE.COM

IAN - SHEFFIELD SPECIALIZED STORM CONTROL 2BR 26x2.0” SPEED GRIP/CONTROL PUNCTURE RESISTANCE The tyres rolled fast compared to the bigger tyres I am used to and were noticeably lighter too. They gripped the wet rocks /roots really well, even on off-camber sections. The wide spacing of the knobs meant that the tyres shed even the cloggiest of mud easily, meaning the tyre could grip better but also the bike wasn’t weighed down with the mud. On the loose corners it was easy enough to get the tyres to break grip but it was controlled and predictable, making it good fun session-ing a few flat corners. Overall, I’ve enjoyed the tyres. It’s always reassuring having mud-specific tyres. It makes riding more enjoyable when you’re not dragging mud clogged tyres round. The width of the tyre lets it down a little bit for the type of riding I do, and I would prefer something a little meatier, even just a 2.2”. The width does however mean the tyre can get right down through the mud and into the grippy stuff underneath rather than just sliding around on top. If you’ve never used mud tyres before, do yourself a favour this winter. They’re guaranteed to increase the enjoyment of your ride.

STUART - ONLINE CONTINENTAL TOURING PLUS REFLEX 700c SPEED GRIP/CONTROL PUNCTURE RESISTANCE

Web Ref: 10960

£29.99 Sizes: 700*28, 32 or 37.

These were used for daily commuting, for the most part on tarmac, in a variety of wonderful Scottish weather situations. They’re a bit slower rolling than my usual Gatorskins, but not massively so. On the super quiet Revolution Belter they didn’t produce much noise at all. With the nights drawing in, the reflective band on the tyre wall is a reassuring touch. The more aggressive tread pattern became more noticeable on off-tarmac detours. The added grip was confidence inspiring on looser surfaces like gravel, making it feel less likely to step out when changing direction. This tyre is definitely best suited to rides that will see a mix of surfaces, from city to suburbs via canal paths. It would make a good tourer where terrain may include dirt, grit or gravel.

EUAN - BRUNTSFIELD SPECIALIZED ROUBAIX PRO 700x23/25 SPEED GRIP/CONTROL PUNCTURE RESISTANCE

Web Ref: 13436

£24.99 Size: 700*23/25.

I use my flat-bar road bike to commute to and from work. My summer tyre this year was the Specialized Turbo Pro 700x23 - for me it is all about speed and low rolling resistance, so this slick & narrow tyre was perfect. Switching to the Roubaix Pros, the first thing I noticed was that they were barely any heavier, great if you are trying to keep weight down. The difference in ride quality was apparent after the first ride - noticeable was the extra comfort and stable cornering (even in the wet) thanks to the volume of the 25mm tyre and the supple 120tpi casing, but barely noticeable was any increase in rolling resistance - thanks to the 23mm contact patch. These tyres flew along! I was honestly impressed with the speed and agility for what should be a slower tyre. A good winter tyre, but come next summer, you may be tempted to keep them on!

GOPRO HERO3+ BLACK EDITION £359.99 When GoPro released the Hero3 Black Edition at the end of 2012 it was hailed as the go-to compact video/stills camera for cycling - or any other outdoor activity. ‘Head and shoulders the best sports camera on the market today.’ CNet. ‘Impossibly small, impossibly precise, impossibly cool.’ Wired.

The Hero3+ Black Edition improves on the original with new features and new standards of definition, yet the camera is now 20% smaller and 20% lighter weight. Among the new features such as faster WiFi, perhaps the most impressive is GoPro’s new Auto Low Light function. This automatically slows down the frame rate when you shoot in low light environments, so the film output doesn’t go grainy, but remains sharp. The frame rate then speeds up when conditions get brighter to ensure crisp action shots.

FROM VINYL TO DIGITAL The Bike Bo-op began as a tiny wee back-street bicycle repair shop in Edinburgh’s Southside in 1977. We set ourselves up as a workers’ co-op because we believed it to be the fairest and most rational business model available. We had a passion for bicycles and we enjoyed refurbishing them. Adopting the name Recycles Co-operative was one of the easier decisions we agreed at our first co-op meeting. The shop opened with a party. Home brew was on tap. Dress code was informal. Skinny jeans prevailed. Despite the fact that the Sex Pistols, Ramones and Clash dominated the vinyl playlist, some of the founder members and guests had beards - a tradition that is upheld to this day by some of today’s co-op members such as Stu, pictured immediately below at this year’s Great North Bike Ride.

Welcome to bike heaven Mechanics you can trust

In 1979, we moved into a larger shop on Bruntsfield Links. It rapidly evolved from a hire & repair shop to a fully fledged bicycle shop. As the shop grew in size, we took every opportunity to introduce interesting new bicycle, cycle equipment and clothing innovations. Tribute to our open co-operative structure, frequently, these new lines would be introduced following recommendations from our customers. Your feedback helped the shop establish itself as the place to check out the latest cycling kit. The experience gained over 25 years, establishing ourselves in one store, gave us the confidence to branch out and open shops in Aberdeen, Leeds, Newcastle, Manchester and Sheffield. While each of these shops has its own local flavour, the Co-op fundamentals learned in the Bruntsfield shop remain the same. That is to create a nice, welcoming space with a fantastic choice of cycle equipment. Even more important, we are committed to creating bike shops where you can seek advice, knowing you will get an honest, informed answer, whether you are a cycling enthusiast or a complete beginner.

LOOK KEO CLASSIC PEDALS £59.99 (WERE £69.99)

Shimano Deore XT M780 ATB SPD Pedals £64.99 (WERE £74.99)

It was LOOK who originally delivered us from toeclip bondage when they invented ‘clipless’ pedals in 1984. This Cycling Weekly review from last year shows how LOOK remain at the top of their game. ‘They are a really easy pedal to engage and once clipped in the pressure is evenly spread across the foot which makes them very comfortable over long rides. At 268g they are at the lighter end of the test scale and feel noticeably smooth when in action. 4.5/5’.

And we have Shimano to thank for popularising a clipless system with the cleats concealed in shoe sole recesses so (unlike LOOK cleats) they barely compromise your ability to walk in your cycling shoes when you get off the bike. If you have never taken the plunge and converted to clipless, trust us. We know of thousands of riders who, once hooked on SPD (Shimano Pedalling Dynamics), have never looked back.

revolution adventure rear panniers 40l £54.99 (WERE £69.99)

teva links mid SHOES £69.99 (WAS £89.99)

RITCHEY WCS CARBON SEATPOST £99.99 (WAS £143.99)

The 35x30x15cm main compartment of each pannier swallows all that most sane riders would ever want to carry on a bike. Large rear pockets are the perfect place to carry tubes and tools. Its easy-on, easy-off fittings are a pleasure to use.

Featuring Teva’s unique PedalLINK soles, designed to mould themselves to flattie pedals for non-slip connection, Links shoes double as exceptional hiking shoes. Unlike some cycling shoes, Teva Links also look the part when you stroll into the pub wearing them.

The WCS (for World Cup Series) is as beautiful a carbon seatpost as you would expect from a company whose president and chief designer is Tom Ritchey, who has been universally acknowledged as one of the finest engineers in cycling for the past 40 years.

WINTER MAINTENANCE

OILY RAGS ON THE WORKBENCH. THE SCENT OF GT85. BLACKENED FINGERS CLASPING A WELL-EARNED CUPPA. THE SATISFACTION OF A JOB WELL DONE. A well-ridden bike can start looking a bit tatty. Especially in winter when roads are likely to be wet, gritted and salted - not the best conditions for keeping delicate mechanisms spick and span. That’s where you come in. Believe it or not, cleaning and maintenance can be part of the pleasure of bike ownership - just like pet owners enjoy grooming their animals. The fact that it’s not too challenging to keep your bike in good nick and maximise its life span sets the bicycle apart in today’s disposable culture. (Try taking an iPod Touch apart and good luck to you.) Visit any Bike Co-op shop, inc. online, and you will be offered a diverse range of maintenance equipment. If you don’t know where to start, just ask. Our staff are always delighted to pass on their experience and expertise.

‘HOW TO’ VIDEOS Not sure how to do it yourself? You could do a lot worse than pick up, say, Haynes Bike Book (web ref: 15024) shown above. We have also filmed a short series of ‘How to’ online videos where our mechanics walk you through the steps they take to, for instance, fix a puncture and adjust gears. http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/blog/tag/video/

A SINGLE CLICK OF THE LEVER AND THE CHAIN SILENTLY SHIFTS UP A GEAR. THE LIGHTEST PULL OF THE LEVER AND THE BRAKE PADS MAKE CONTACT. RIDING A MACHINE IN PEAK CONDITION MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE. If you read our brief history of the Bike Co-op (P. 50) you will know that we started off as a bike repair shop. We never forget our roots. That’s why every one of our shops has its own service centre, dedicated to repairing, servicing and fitting things to your bike. Throughout this year, we have been working hard to improve our repair services by expanding workshop capacity in every store.

So if your bike needs any attention, pop it in to your local Bike Co-op shop. Even if you’re halfway through an attempted repair of your own and you get stuck (we’ve all been there) don’t be shy. Pay us a visit and we will do all we can to get you back on the road - as revealed by the customer reviews below.

service centres REPAIRS If you need a repair or something fitted, simply wheel your bike in (though advance booking is always recommended). No job too big, no job too small. Good, honest, professional service guaranteed.

FREE SAFETY CHECK A trained mechanic will give your bike a free safety inspection, paying particular attention to the brakes, transmission, tyres, wheels and steering. We will recommend the work required to make the bike good and you’ll always get an accurate estimate of the job’s expected cost before a spanner touches the bike

I finally gave up trying to get my bike into a good state of repair, so I booked it in for a £50 standard service. I can honestly say that the difference between it going in and coming out is flabbergasting. I think they literally took the entire gearing system and brakes to pieces, needing on one area to drill bits off as they were seized so much, and sorted it out to such a degree that it seems like a new bike. For only an extra £30 for parts added in, it’s the best £80 I’ve spent in a long time.

Thank you so much to the staff at the Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative Brunstfield Links store. My girlfriend and I were one-third the way through our John o’ Groats to Land’s End trip and had trouble with our pannier racks and panniers. We had fantastic service from three members of staff who sorted us out with alternative panniers, fixed the racks and sorted out new rear cassettes to give us a better range of gears, while we waited. Thanks so much!!!

MAINTENANCE CLASSES Just as owning a good Gore-Tex (or similar) jacket makes you feel better about riding in all weathers, knowing what to do if you suffer ‘a mechanical’ makes you a more self-confident cyclist. The best way to get this hands-on experience is to attend one of our small, friendly, informative classes in cycle maintenance.

WILLIE MARSHALL | BIKE coop customer

I would just like to say that I came in to collect my Giant XTC at the Aberdeen store, it required new brakes, forks and a wee look over. I was made to feel welcome and learned a few do’s and don’ts concerning my bike. (I’m a 44 year old, born again cyclist). The customer service was second to none, Johnny Milton and his team done a great job. The bike advice was brilliant. 10/10.

DONALD | BIKE coop customer

Brought my bike to Edinburgh Bicycle on a Sunday hoping someone could give me some advice on a click, click sound coming from the pedal / crank. The shop was busy. When I explained the issue I was having, the cause and remedy was identified immediately. I needed the bike the next day and the workshop was fully booked. When I explained my situation the workshop manager replaced the part there and then. I really appreciate him going out of his way to accommodate me.
