This winter’s Brand highlights CO-OP MEMBER TOM’S FOCUS FACTORY TOUR

RIDE LIKE A PRO ON A UCI RACE-READY FRAME

‘This Autumn I was invited to the Focus factory where this German bicycle company produces an impressive 2,500 complete bikes every day.

This April, Cycling Plus magazine hailed the Focus Izalco Pro 3.0 as their Bike of the Year 2012. This award was based upon testing the bike against 24 other models, nominated by their biggest competitors.

First stop was their testing department where I witnessed handlebars, forks, seatpins and even frames being flexed to breaking point. Complete bikes were mounted on machines that inflicted the equivalent of 5 years riding abuse in a matter of a couple of days. Focus don’t just torture test their own bikes and parts. They make the same checks on components sourced from other manufacturers to ensure these parts exceed EU standards too, and are therefore fit to grace Focus bicycles.

What impressed Cycling Plus most was the fact that this £2,100 bike came with the same UCI-registered carbon frame that adorns the Focus Team bikes ridden by the pro riders of Teams Katusha and Acqua & Sapone on the major Tours. That’s significant because it’s common practice for sub-4 grand carbon frames to be woven from less exotic Toray filament, which won’t offer quite the same strength-to-lightness ratio. This autumn, Focus are taking this ‘best value without compromise’ commitment to the next level with their Evo 6.0. The carbon frame is 100% pro-quality UCI-compliant, yet the complete 105-equipped bike will retail at an unprecedented low £1,375. If you’ve been holding off from getting yourself a nice road bike because you’ve been waiting on carbon becoming more affordable, ‘13 could be your lucky year.

Next we were taken to a huge room where every frame is checked for accuracy and truth. The frame is then hooked to a ceiling-mounted track to commence its 1,000 metre journey through the paint shop to undergo the high temperature electrostatic process we know and love as Focus’s super-hard powder coat finish.

Next came the wheel-building shop. Having built wheels myself it was amazing to see how quickly Focus could create 5,000 perfect wheels to fulfil their daily bike quota. The wheels are machine built from lacing, to tensioning to truing. Each wheel is then hand finished to ensure it meets the Focus true-to-0.3- millimetre control standard (which is 3 times more rigorous than the generally accepted industry standard). With the tyre and tube fitted and inflated in under a minute, the wheel is now ready to go to the assembly plant and fitted to its bike. All in all this factory trip was a fantastic insight into modern bicycle production. It gave me a newfound respect for Focus having witnessed the care and effort they devote to creating every single bike.’

Once stickered and lacquered the frame goes to the assembly plant where an army of mechanics fit the parts to the frames and create complete bikes. What really struck me about the whole factory was how clean and organised it was. Everything had a place and everything was in its place.

IZALCO PRO 3.0

CYCLING PLUS BIKE OF THE YEAR 2012 FOCUS IZALCO PRO 3.0 £2,098.99 ‘When you want to step up and push hard, the Izalco responds instantly, but sit back and cruise and it’s couch comfortable. On climbs, it’s even more impressive still; its light response and smooth riding making it one that we kept coming back to, to ride. Creating a bike that’s able to match you whether you want to ride hard or cruise along in comfort is a superb trick and one we’ve only really encountered on bikes at twice the price. And that’s really the crux of the Izalco’s triumph. For the price, you are getting exactly the same frame as the £5,799 team bike, so the Izalco can be upgraded to your heart’s content. Trek, Cannondale and Giant all offer lower grade carbon versions of their flagship designs, while Focus offer its best, making its value for money soar.’ Cycling Plus. ‘PROBABLY, MY NEXT BIKE’ ANDY (Bike Co-op buying manager)

T-129 S 29er £1,999.99 One sure way to brighten up your winter would be to get your hands on a winter-proof Whyte bicycle. Whyte mountain bikes are famed for their extra tyre clearance to cope with the most claggy conditions. Their Quad-Link suspension system barely bobs on the climbs yet is utterly responsive when required. As far as we know, Whyte remains the only bike company to offer a lifetime warranty on their suspension pivot bearings. If you prefer a lightweight hardtail, Whyte are equally inventive with details such as adjustable dropouts on their 905 and 929 models, which effectively lengthen or shorten the chainstays. Opt for longer and lower chainstays for a more relaxed ride. Alternatively shorter and higher chainstays increase ground clearance and delivers sharper handling. Whilst they made their name with MTBs, over the past half dozen years Whyte have devoted as much attention to creating extraordinary urban bikes with, for instance, all-weather hydraulic disc brakes on every model. The new Whyte Montpelier must be a contender for the title: prettiest hybrid ever.

WHYTE REDESIGN MAKE BIG WHEELS VIABLE

Developing a new 4-bar link version of their Quad-Link suspension system ensures Whyte’s debut 120mm-travel 29er matches the grip, control and agility that has made their trail bikes legendary, whilst introducing an extra burst of speed potential. Whyte achieve this extraordinary feat by producing a 29er with shorter chainstays than the benchmark 26”-wheel Whyte 146.

ALUMINIUM EXPERTISE Cannondale produced their first bike in 1983 - an aluminium framed touring bike. Two years later they launched their first road bikes and MTBs at the Eurobike Show when they were the first major bike company to take the giant step of producing a complete range where every frame was built with oversized 6061 T6 aluminium tubing. The result was a lighter weight bike that was torsionally stiffer so it could accelerate faster with less effort than competing steel-framed bikes. We were immediately smitten, and Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op became one of the first shops in Europe where you could buy one of these aluminium masterpieces. Over the years, we have watched Cannondale develop and diversify with, for instance, their jaw-dropping carbon composite Synapse and Scalpels over the past decade. For all that, we will always look upon Cannondale as (to recall their old slogan) the experts in aluminium. Today near-every better quality bike from most bicycle companies (including our own Revolution bikes) is built with an oversized aluminium alloy frame. We have a hunch that Cannondale still do it best. Our Cannondale CAAD8 review explains why.

04

CANNONDALE CAAD8 2300 £599.99 Sizes: 48, 51, 54, 56, 58, 61cm. Colour: Black. Web Ref: 15468 CAAD8 refers to this being the 8th generation Cannondale Advanced Aluminium Design road frame. There is no better guarantee that this frame will be optimised to the nth degree. The oversized bottom bracket, aided and abetted by the asymmetric chain stays, beefed up on the drive side, help you power uphills. The more svelte left-hand chainstays save weight. So does the externally machined head tube. Although this head tube is slightly taller than you’ll find

on the more expensive CAAD10 models, the CAAD8 frame retains true race geometry. Cannondale complement this thoroughbred frame with a carbon bladed fork, while Shimano 2300 Dual Control 2x8 STI shifters, mechs and compact 34/50 chainset look after the gear changes. This bike hadn’t arrived in stock at the time of going to press but we are confident that the CAAD8 2300 will be among the lightest road bikes available at this kind of price.

THE BEST LOOKING BIKE TO HIT THE STREETS THIS YEAR WHYTE MONTPELLIER CARBON £1,599.99 WHYTE CARBON FRAME & FORK BRINGS ROAD BIKE-LIKE SPEED, POWER, COMFORT AND GRACE TO THE COMMUTER/HYBRID BIKE

Who said, urban bikes have to look utilitarian? Whyte designer, Ian Alexander’s, aim with the Montpellier (and Whyte’s other R7 Fast Urban Series models) was to combine the best elements of the urban MTB bike with the immediate power delivery of a road bike and the design flair of a single speed. The Montpellier’s composite monocoque frame delivers the speed, the power, the comfort and the grace of the best carbon road bikes. Moreover, from its Hope Evo hubs to its all-new SRAM Via GT groupset with urban-optimised gear ratios (48/32 chainrings & 11-32 cogs) and hydraulic disc brakes, the Montpellier’s components match its classy carbon chassis.

SO GOOD THEY DIDN’T CHANGE IT When Cycling Plus magazine reviewed the Giant Defy 1 this March, they hailed it as ‘the best riding bike we know of at this price point... its superb chassis creates a responsive but flowing ride backed up by balanced handling and excellent components’. Such glowing reviews have their influence. The bike sold out within days throughout the land. If you wanted a Giant Defy 1, you had to wait months for fresh supplies to arrive from Taiwan. This rave review was also a vivid endorsement of what Giant are all about. Their technical processes (described in our Defy 1 review below) and their economies of scale make a Giant bicycle a contender for best buy at every price point.

GIANT DEFY 1 £998.99 The 2012 Defy 1 was so well received, Giant have had the good sense to leave it unchanged. (This ain’t always the case. We’ve witnessed many frustrating examples of bicycle companies prematurely retiring classic equipment.) The Giant Defy 1 2013 is still built with their trademark Fluid Formed Aluxx SL frame that the Cycling Plus reviewers loved so much. Shimano 105 STI shifters and mechs guarantee slick gear changes. Giant’s own P-R2 wheels with sealed bearings and DT double butted spokes are as good as you’ll get at this price - which sums up what we have come to expect from this big friendly Giant bicycle company.

ROAD BIKES ENDURANCE / COMFORT I

n 2004, Specialized launched the Roubaix - a road bike with comfort elements factored in. Zertz ‘solid jelly’ implanted forks and stays took the sting out of the frame & fork’s stiff carbon layup. A taller head tube and longer wheelbase made the ride more forgiving over the distance. Specialized coined the term ‘endurance road’ to describe the geometry of a bike, fit for Europe’s hardest road race - Paris Roubaix. The fact that riders on Roubaix have won 4 of these races speaks volumes. The Roubaix was revolutionary in 2004 because most ‘experts’ then took the view that the road bike was a specialist machine for the young and lean, who could ride flat-backed on handlebars set 12cm lower than the saddle. The Specialized Roubaix made road bikes accessible to a new demographic that wasn’t necessarily slim or youthful. Other progressive companies such as Giant and Cannondale saw the light and produced their own endurance road bikes. Specialized brought out the endurance geometry aluminiumframed mudguard-compatible Secteur for riders not on a 4-figure carbon budget. Expanding the options available meant that road bikes were no longer niche. For the first time since the early ‘80s, they are outselling mountain bikes in our shops. We believe this resurgence is, in part, due to people now having the opportunity to experience speed, acceleration and exhilaration in comfort on bikes like these.

Giant go further than any other company to oversee the quality control processes that make for a better bike. The Defy 4 frame is built with premium lightweight AluxX aluminium tubes produced in Giant’s own forging facility. No strangers to extruding aluminium, Giant are the only bike company we know of who manufacture their own rims to create their own wheels, which are shod with their own tyres.

The Secteur is like a more affordable aluminiumframe version of the Specialized Roubaix - the carbon-frame bike that defined the endurance geometry road bike category. The Secteur’s shaped tubes (check the skinny seat stays), its more heads-up geometry, its shock-absorbing Zertz-implanted carbon fork and its 3x9 transmission create a true road bike that doesn’t ignore your comfort needs.

Like every bicycle in this section, the Synapse is a lightweight speed machine with a taller head tube and longer wheelbase for all-day comfort. Its carbon SAVE (Synapse Active Vibration Elimination) forks live up to their name. Its SAVE aluminium seat stays curve to meet the rear dropouts to damp potential shock from ill-kept roads. Its triple-chainset Shimano Sora 3x9 gearing is fit for near-any gradient.

The Defy 3 is built with the same fluid-formed AluxX frame and carbon bladed fork with OverDrive steerer as the Giant Defy 4. Then it is upgraded with new Shimano Sora 2x9 shifters (now with Shimano 105-like paddle-style levers) and gear mechs. Note that this compact drivetrain with its 34/50 chainset offers an alternative to the Specialized Secteur and Cannondale Synapse triple chainset models.

In a world dominated by bike frames built with oversized aluminium or carbon tubing there is something head-turning about a road bike like this. The Equilibrium is built with comparatively skinny Reynolds butted steel tubes, as most racing bikes were up till the late 1980s. You can be confident that the unique light sprung feel of this Genesis butted steel frame and CrMo fork (with mudguard eyelets) will uplift every ride.

This is the first ever Specialized road bike with disc brakes. We are delighted to note that Specialized have spec’d our favourite cableoperated disc brakes - Avid BB-5 - so named because the callipers move on ball bearings for smooth operation and release. This is the bike for you if you have crossed over from MTBs and you have found road bike brakes somewhat underpowered and their maintenance fiddly.

his double-page spread introduces you to the sub-10 kilo category of road bikes where aluminium and steel frames make way for titanium and carbon. Riding a bike this light truly is a revelation. It seems to neutralise gravity. Hills what hills? Factor in the comfort features of endurance geometry such as a taller head tube and a longer wheelbase and you achieve the holy grail of a performance bike that doesn’t ignore your comfort need. Just as important these are comfortable bikes that do not compromise your natural craving to ride as fast as you can, as proven by triple Paris-Roubaix winner, Tom Boonen. (You would never confuse his Specialized Roubaix for a comfort hybrid/commuter bike.) CARBON ROAD BIKE BARGAIN OF THE YEAR

100% CARBON + SRAM APEX 2x10 = PURE JOY

THE ROUBAIX WITH TIAGRA 2X10 UPGRADES

Last year’s entry-level Roubaix cost £1,600. Switching from Shimano Tiagra 2x10 to Shimano Sora 2x9 gearing, this year’s standard Roubaix has dropped one rear cog. And £400. Yet you still get the essential Paris-Roubaix-proven full carbon monocoque frame and fork with shock dissipating Zertz that made the Roubaix the first name in endurance geometry road bikes.

Giant have more than 25 years experience building carbon fibre frames. The only fibre Giant use is Toray filament, which other manufacturers reserve for their best frames. It takes 13 days to build each Giant carbon frame. Giant build carbon frames for smaller companies such as Trek and Pinarello. If you are thinking of a carbon road bike, consider one from the world experts.

This is the Specialized Roubaix elevated to Shimano 2x10 Tiagra level to deliver even smoother gear changes. The Roubaix Sport also boasts real Shimano Tiagra brakes. (The standard Roubaix comes with Axis DC 1.0 dual pivot brakes.) The Body Geometry saddle is the curiously named, minimal but very comfortable Specialized Toupé RBX (over the BG Riva).

A titanium tube weighs half as much as a steel tube of identical dimensions, yet it doesn’t have to be as oversized as aluminium or carbon to be as stiff and strong. Titanium is also the most weatherproof metal, so the frame builder doesn’t have to paint it. This saves more weight and, to our eyes, adds beauty. It also makes the titanium bike, probably, the ideal all-weather all-year round bike. Van Nicholas bikes come from the Netherlands - the land of the bicycle. Titanium is the only frame material they use. They build bikes in sufficient volume to make this exotic frame material more affordable. Give it a try and you might well find that, like a growing number of our staff, you agree that a titanium bike is the most comfortable and engaging ride you can get.

ROAD BIKES RACING W

hilst endurance/comfort road bikes have done a fantastic job of making fast exciting bicycles more accessible for more people, the traditional ‘head down/arse up’ style of road bike remains the only choice for many riders. Fans of classic road geometry passionately believe that the committed rider can train to gain the fitness and flexibility required to ride comfortably in the ‘aero tuck’ position. What’s more, once the rider attains that level of fitness, he or she will find riding flat backed more comfortable than sitting more upright. They make the point that the endurance road bike formula of lengthening the head tube eliminates the potential to lower your position once your flexibility improves. The benefit of classic road geometry is that if you find it too challenging at first, you can fit a higher stem, perhaps as a temporary measure, then refit the original once you’ve trained up to ride with lower bars. Many of our staff buy into this philosophy and ride pure road bikes like the ones described on the next 4 pages. Some of us prefer endurance geometry. As ever, we offer a great selection of both styles so you can make your own informed choice.

anufacturers such as Specialized and Giant now have 2 decades experience working with carbon. They know exactly how to extract every advantage from this material by creating shapes that would be challenging or impossible when working in metal. Carbon fabrication has made possible innovations such as tapered head tubes and steerers, oversized bottom brackets and asymmetrical stays, which combine to deliver new levels of lateral stiffness and rigidity. Rigidity here is a good thing because it makes it so much easier to pick up speed. You get from A to B 25% faster and the ride is 100% more enjoyable. We feature 4 of our best buys in carbon on the next page while, below, we showcase the new Wilier Cento 1SR, simply because our buyers agreed that it was the best-looking road bike at this year’s Eurobike show. WILIER CENTO 1SR ATHENA £3,498.99 PROBABLY THE BEST LOOKING BIKE OF THE YEAR

You might have seen Alessandro Petacchi riding this bike on the Tour. The focus of this all-new version of the Cento is about maximising aerodynamic advantage, hence the Kammtail-profile fork and integrated seatpost. The frame is made from a 60-ton carbon fibre with zinc oxide mixed into the resin to increase its structural integrity. Huge asymmetrical chainstays combined with a new BB386Evo bottom bracket with an 86.5mm

shell ensure zero power loss on the sprints. Attention to detail is exquisite. The cable guides are embedded under the bottom bracket so they don’t protrude, and to ensure the cable takes the shortest path to the derailleur. The Campagnolo Athena 11-speed gruppo sets the frame off perfectly. While optimising a bike’s aerodynamics usually means putting on the pounds, Wilier tell us they have kept this Italian head turner down to a mere 7.4kg/16.3lbs. Bellissimo.

Astonishingly for such a comparatively affordable bicycle, this Giant TCR shares a similar DNA to the bikes ridden on the major Tours by the Team Rabobank pros. Giant’s Modified Monocoque Construction technique, where the main frame is joined to the rear triangle, enables them to eliminate the outer woven layer and save weight without compromising strength.

FOCUS CAYO EVO 6.0 £1,374.99 GENUINE UCI-APPROVED FRAME

Focus are the only company we know who grace their entry-level carbon race bike with exactly the same frame their pro riders (Team Acqua & Sapone) ride on, for instance, Milan-San Remo - Europe’s longest one-day pro race. Yet this bike’s gear shifting is Shimano 105 at a price where less exotic Shimano Sora and Tiagra shifting prevails.

FOCUS CAYO EVO 4.0 £1,898.99 ULTEGRA-EQUIPPED UCI-APPROVED FRAME

Focus told us they see themselves as the German bicycling equivalent of Audi or Mercedes cars. To continue the automobile comparison, offering a UCI-approved frame at this kind of price is the bicycling equivalent of delivering a Formula 1 car on a family saloon budget. As well as upgrading to Ultegra shifting, the Evo 4.0’s full carbon fork is the lighter weight T4 model.

ROAD BIKES WOMEN’S T

urn up at a sportive such as the Etape Caledonia and one thing that strikes you is the growing number of women taking part, especially when compared with the number of women who participated in cycling events as recently as 10 years ago. This healthy trend is no doubt encouraged by the friendly, informal and welcoming vibe surrounding most sportives. Women’s-only events such as Cycletta and Sky Breeze Rides are also a growing attraction. Sisters who prefer to do it themselves tell us that as well as experiencing an enjoyable workout, ‘the chat’ is often better on women’s-only rides. Another pleasing trend is the growing range of bikes available to meet the needs of women. This double page spread covers a few of our favourite women’s-specific bikes and the equipment to go with them. You’ll see more if you visit www.edinburghbicycle.com/rwwc12

CANNONDALE SYNAPSE WOMEN’S £599.99 CANNONDALE’S WOMEN’S-SPECIFIC ENDURANCE/COMFORT ROAD BIKE

This Synapse is Cannondale’s women’s-specific take on the endurance/comfort road bike. With its butted aluminium frame and carbon fork, you can be confident this will be among the lightest, brightest bikes around this price. Its shorter top tube and taller head tube (compared with the men’s equivalent model) ensure a safer, more comfortable ride. Its carbon SAVE (Synapse Active Vibration Elimination) forks and shaped alloy seat stays offer an element of shock-damping suspension which (unlike hybrid or mountain bike suspension) comes without any weight penalty

SPECIALIZED DOLCE £649.99 THE DOLCE GUARANTEES A GOOD LIFE ON A SPECIALIZED WOMEN’S BIKE

Now in its ninth season, the Specialized Dolce lives up to its reputation for being one of the most fully integrated female-friendly road bikes you can lay your hands on. It’s built on a women’s compact frame (available in five sizes to fit near-any woman from 4’ 6” to 5’ 10”) to bring the shallow drop bars within comfortable reach. To quote Specialized. ‘Every key component of the Dolce was specifically selected for the female rider looking to tackle everything from the weekend workout to the upcoming century ride. The Dolce has an A1 alloy frame with women’s endurance geometry, carbon forks and Zertz inserts for a responsive, yet forgiving ride.’

SHIMANO 105-EQUIPPED GREAT-FITTING GIANT

REJOICE! RUBIES ARE NOW 25% MORE AFFORDABLE

SHIMANO 105-EQUIPPED WOMEN’S ERGORIDE

Like every Giant women’s bike, the Avail 1 conforms to their 3F commitment to balance the three factors critical in bike design: fit, form & function. The Avail’s frame geometry and the brake lever reach are shorter and the handlebars less wide so the bike will fit most women better than the gents’ Giant Defy. Building the frame with arguably the highest grade alloy tubing available (AluxX) guarantees a bike that looks as graceful as it functions.

Boasting Specialized’s legendary shock-damping ‘solid jelly’ Zertz implanted in the otherwise full carbon frame and fork, the Ruby is the women’s version of the Roubaix - the bicycle that defined the ergonomic endurance road bike concept, and proved that making your ride smoother can also make it faster. As with its big brother, the entry fee for owning a Ruby has tumbled by a full £400 from last year’s £1,600.

Donna offers the lightweight excitement that made the Focus Izalco the Cycling Plus Bike of the Year 2012, but with a more femalefriendly shorter reach to the slightly higher handlebars. Donna is therefore one of the new wave of endurance road bikes that offers an exhilarating ride without compromising your comfort requirements. As is the Focus way, you can opt to have this bike either compact double or triple chainset equipped.

GETTING THE RIGHT FIT A FEW SMALL TWEAKS CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE If you’re into cycling one of the saddest sights is seeing a novice rider struggling up a hill - not because they’re unfit or in too high a gear - but simply because their saddle is too low. You feel like stopping to offer a word of advice. But you decide that wouldn’t be very British, so you let them ride on in blissful ignorance. The trouble with minding your own business in situations like this is that the poor rider ends up coming to the conclusion that cycling is too much like hard work so they pack it in, perhaps for ever. That’s why this ‘getting the right fit’ double-page spread, where we pass on tips we have picked up over the years, is perhaps the most important section of this catalogue. Our main thrust here is to encourage you not to be shy about making alterations. A few small tweaks can make all the difference when it comes to feeling right on the bike. And that begins with having a suitable saddle and positioning it correctly.

SADDLES If you never notice your saddle: great. You are in the happy state of being content with what you’ve got. If you are painfully aware of your saddle, check out the vast range of alternatives at edinburghbicycle/ sadwc12 such as the Specialized BG (Body Geometry), pictured below, famed for its clinically-proven pressure-eradicating cutaway middle.

BIG ISN’T ALWAYS BEST If your saddle is unyielding, it’s tempting to replace it with a wider softer seat. While a soft saddle can feel nice at first, its very squishiness creates movement and friction, which becomes annoyingly uncomfortable on any significant bike ride. If the saddle’s too wide, your thighs will rub against it. That’s why most riders get on better with a more streamlined saddle such as our BG example, which even comes in a choice of 3 widths to correspond with your sit bones’.

ON THE LEVEL If the saddle nose points down, it can feel like you’re sliding off it. If the saddle points up, it can put pressure where you least want it. Most cyclists get on best with a saddle that’s dead level. Check yours by placing a flat edge, such as a hardback book, on top of the saddle and checking it’s parallel with the ground. You can correct the tilt of most saddles by undoing the seatpost clamp’s Allen bolt.

SADDLE HEIGHT A correctly positioned saddle allows you to extend your legs and maximise pedalling efficiency. A too-low saddle inhibits how far you would naturally stretch your legs, with the result that your quads tire and your knees hurt. The traditional method of setting saddle height by raising it till it feels right is flawed because a saddle that’s slightly too low can still feel fine. Our best tip is to raise the saddle slightly too high, so you have to rock the hips and point the toes down to reach the pedal at the bottom of each stroke. This feels intuitively wrong, so you correct it by lowering the saddle in 5mm steps. You’ll know you’ve got it right when the foot can sit level on the pedal with the leg extended.

HANDLEBARS & STEMS The diagram below depicts the ideal position a fit youthful rider might adopt on a road bike. The cyclist is in an efficient aerodynamic ‘tuck’ position, so he or she can ride faster with the least expenditure of effort. Riding in this position is a formula that works whether you’re Bradley on Tour or madly trying to get to work on time. Bear in mind that this ‘correct’ riding position is not an ideal for everyone. If you haven’t trained yourself to ride in the classic flat-back position, you will probably feel more comfortable sitting more upright. Higher bars can reduce the weight and hence the pressure on your wrists. Riding with your back at a 45˚ angle,

or higher, rather than at zero degrees can relieve lower back pain and/or neck strain. Handlebar reach is also an issue. Stretching too far to the bars locks out the arms so you’ll feel every bump. Too short a reach can feel constricting. The solution to all these ailments is often a simple matter of changing the bar (or more often its stem) to achieve a longer, shorter, higher or lower reach. Most of us have been through this stemswapping process with our own bikes. If you think you might benefit from a change in riding position, pop round to any of our shops with your bike and we will be delighted to advise you on its setup.

GET THE KOPS! KOPS (knee over pedal spindle) is the ergonomically correct riding position where the front of the knee bone, the ball of the foot and the pedal spindle are in line when the pedal is at 3 o’clock. You achieve KOPS by moving the saddle forwards or back. Riding with cleated shoes (or toeclips) helps maintain this knee/pedal alignment. While KOPS is a good place to start, it doesn’t work for everyone. Some riders feel they can exert more power when the saddle is positioned further back, especially on seated climbs. As always, experiment and keep an open mind until you feel right on the bike.

BRIGHTEN UP YOUR TRAINING THIS WINTER ‘Faced with the demands of busy lives, families and long lists of jobs-to-do my riding buddy and I have developed a system to make sure we get out and ride on winter Sunday mornings. It’s simple: we set the alarm for six and peer out of the window. If it’s raining or icy we climb back into bed and we dedicate the day to our loved ones. But if it’s dry, even if very cold, we scoff our muesli and meet on the corner at six-thirty. No hurried phone calls or limp excuses are allowed, if it’s dry we have to be there. And two or three hours later we arrive back home, hot and breathless but invigorated for the rest of the day. It works for us.’ Bike Co-op customer Mike Adams If you feel inspired to follow Mike’s example and keep in training over the winter you might want to prepare yourself by kitting yourself with clobber that will beat the chill. You’ll need a light for pre-dawn rides and you might want to consider a computer to monitor your progress. Alternatively, you can you can follow the example of most pro riders by maintaining fitness on a home trainer. Check online to see our complete range at www.edinburghbicycle.com/trainers

COMMUTER | HYBRID COMFORT | SPEED A TRIBE CALLED HYBRID Commuter/hybrid is a catch-all term that we use to describe any bicycle that is neither a full-on road racing bike or a mountain bike. Hybrids therefore come in more varieties than Heinz. COMFORT HYBRIDS are defined by their wide smooth tyres and for their upright riding position, courtesy of their long head tubes and their tall adjustable-rise stems. Taking the 2 bikes featured below, both the Specializeds’ 700x45 tyres and the Ridgeback’s 700x37 tyres will offer more cushioning than a road bike’s tyres, yet will run more smoothly than knobbly MTB tyres on tarmac. You can read about many more bikes of this style at www.edinburghbicycle.com/hcomwc12

SPEED HYBRIDS are more road bike-like in terms of geometry and light weight. Their handlebars are set lower to promote a more sporty posture. Slimmer 700c tyres (between 25 and 32mm wide) ensure faster acceleration. Speed hybrids are often described as ‘road bikes with flat bars’. SPECIALIZED CROSSROADS SPORT £349.99

ridgeback meteor £349.99

RETURN OF THE DADDY OF HYBRID BIKES (AND HIS MISSUS)

UP FOR BRITISH COMMUTING. DOWN IN PRICE

Ever the innovators, Specialized launched their first hybrid bike in 1989. This was long before most other bicycle companies had thought of producing versatile ‘inbetweener’ flat bar bikes that coped equally well on roads and towpaths. Specialized called that bike the Crossroads and it proved itself incredibly popular with our customers for more than 15 years. As is the way of these things, Specialized ‘refreshed’ the bike with a name-change (to Globe) in 2006. Our customers still clamoured for Crossroads, based on their friends’ recommendations. Happily, Specialized listened and resumed production.

Like the Specialized Crossroads Sport, the Meteor is built with a lightweight alloy frame equipped with a Shimano Altus 3x8 transmission, 700c wheels and alloy V-brakes. Perhaps as a nod to British weather, the Ridgeback Meteor comes ready equipped with mudguards. It also comes with a pannier rack. These additions potentially save you around £50 compared with equipping a bare bike with guards and rack. Talking of 50 quid, that’s how much less the Ridgeback Meteor ‘13 costs compared with last year’s version.

specialized vita £399.99

Charge grater £399.99

SPECIALIZED ROAD BIKE WITH FLAT BARS

DOLCE-LIKE RIDE BUT WITH FLAT BAR COMFORT

A BIKE THAT GLORIES IN ITS GREAT SIMPLICITY

Whilst a hybrid such as the Specialized Crossroads could be described as half mountain bike / half road bike, the Sirrus is 90% road bike. The Sirrus’s A1 Premium Aluminium frame is thinner walled and lighter weight. Its Specialized Flak Jacket puncture resistant tyres are 700x32, not 70x45, so they’re lighter weight and faster too, but they’ll still cope with unsmooth roads and paths. Only the Sirrus’s handlebars, V-brakes and Shimano Altus 3x8 EZ Fire gearing are MTB-derived.

The Vita shares the Specialized Sirrus’s spec and design, but in a more female-friendly form. The top tube is lower and shorter to offer more clearance and less of a reach to the bars. The Vita is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a quick-handling road bike like the Specialized Dolce (P.14) but you’re more comfortable with flat bars equipped with mountain bike-style brake levers and EZ Fire gear shifters, over drop bars and road bike levers.

The Grater is the latest Charge bike named after a prosaic object, you’re more likely to find in the kitchen. (Previous Charge bikes include the Scourer, the Juicer, the Plug and Lazy Susan.) The Grater also upholds Charge’s great tradition of producing bikes that are head turning yet understated. Its 6061 aluminium round-tube frame and CrMo steel straight-blade fork keep things light. Shimano Altus 8-speed shifter & mech keep the single-chainring gearing simple.

WHYTE R7: FAST URBAN SERIES

VICTORIA

For their R7 bikes, Whyte took some of the best elements of their UK-proof MTBs and created a range of agile city bikes, especially fit for UK urban conditions. Every R7 frame here is built with custom butted aluminium tubing, guaranteed to be thinner walled and lighter weight than stock 6061 tubing. The frames’ curvy rear seatstays help damp shock. Their 69˚ head angles and long wheelbases ensure stability at speed. Their short stems and wide MTB bars enable slow-speed manoeuvrability. Their Maxxis Detonator 700x28 tyres combine puncture protection with speed. Low-maintenance confidence-inspiring hydraulic disc brakes are another welcome MTB-derived feature found on every Whyte R7. To enable this, Whyte created a custom dropout that positions the brake calliper inside the rear triangle so it doesn’t preclude fitting a standard mudguard or rack. Genius or what?

This debut R7 bike for women is built with the same hydroformed frame that graces the £999.99 Whyte Stirling. Hydraulic disc brakes and Shimano Sora 2x9 gearing helps you enjoy the full potential of this gorgeous frame.

giant rapid 3 £598.99

focus planet tr 3.0 £798.99

QUICK BY NAME, COMFORTABLE BY NATURE.

THE MOST ROAD BIKE-LIKE BIKE IN THIS SECTION

ONE OF THE STEALTHIEST BIKES ON THE PLANET

The Quick 4 features ‘Rider Tailored Geometry’ which delivers a sporty yet comfortable riding position. Cannondale’s proven SAVE (Synapse Active Vibration Elimination) alloy stays and carbon forks smooth the roads that this bike’s exciting Element C3 wheels are made to speed along. Shimano Acera 3x8 Rapidfire shifters control the Alivio rear and Acera front mechs.

To ensure the most authentic road bike feel, the Rapid’s top tube is longer than the Giant Defy’s (P.7). When you reach for the bars, your position exactly mirrors what it would be on that Giant road bike. The mini bar ends offer a secondary hand position, similar to a road bike’s brake hoods. The dual pivot brakes would be at home on any endurance road bike. The 700x25 tyres are the skinniest and fastest on these pages.

Focus are so well regarded in their native Germany, their compatriots, Continental, produce a special all-black edition of their 70x35 Urban tyres to match the Planet TR’s triple-butted alloy frame’s ‘Magicblack’ finish. The Tektro HDC300 hydraulic disc brakes, the Shimano 3x9 Deore shifters and the Shimano LX mechs carry through this bike’s all-black high performance / low-key vibe.

ome lucky riders with plenty storage space own a selection of bikes. If you only have the budget, space or inclination to own just one bike, and want one that works well over the widest spectrum of conditions, the rugged hybrids on this double-page spread are well worth considering. The general adoption of hydraulic disc brakes, suspension forks and 700x35-45 tyres make these bikes intrinsically more off-road capable than, say, cross bikes or comfort commuter/hybrids. A reasonably skilled rider could take one of these rugged hybrids round a trail centre blue route. (Their 700c wheel size means it is no surprise that these bikes are often mistaken for 29er MTBs.) The fact that the fork travel can usually be locked out preps these bikes for town use. Pannier rack and mudguard compatibility boost their versatility. When people come to our shops looking for a bike capable of near anything (ruling out full-on mountain biking and road racing) the Crosstrail Sport Disc, and its twin sister, the Ariel, are the first bikes they turn to. Given Specialized’s frame-building fame, it is no surprise that these bikes’ A1 butted aluminium frames inspire confidence. 60mm-travel SunTour Nexi forks (with lockout) make these bikes fit for entry-level mountain

biking or everyday cobble-bashing. Tektro hydraulic disc brakes deliver car-like consistent braking performance. Shimano Acera 3x9 Rapidfire gearing underlines the Crosstrail and Ariel’s ride-anywhere ambition. Specialized Trigger Sport 700x38c tyres on double-wall alloy rims ensure sound performance on road and off. With so much going for them, it’s little wonder that these are our best-selling bikes.

A FEW OF OUR FAVOURITE winter ESSENTIALS

These standard versions of the Crosstrail and Ariel retain the A1 frame and 700x38 tyres that helped make the Crosstrail Sport Disc (P.24) our best selling bike. Specialized then save money by spec’ing similar SunTour 60mm forks, but without lockout; Shimano 3x8 gearing rather than 3x9; and by opting for V-brakes instead of disc brakes.

COMMUTER | HYBRID CROSS C

ross bikes are inspired by cyclo-cross - a century-old sport pioneered by road riders who fitted wider, more knobbly tyres (but not as wide or knobbly as a mountain bike’s) to their road bikes so they could race cross-country in winter. Built with sufficient clearance to fit full mudguards and a rack, a cross bike can be the perfect year-round bicycle if you’re looking for a fast, engaging drop-bar road bike that can happily cope with a light snowy road ride or a muddy off-road excursion As with any type of bicycle, cross bikes are defined by their tyres, which are generally 700x35 and mildly knobbly. Any of these bikes could comfortably take a smoother, slimmer tyre, down to 700x25. A quick tyre swap can therefore transform any cross bike into a fast sportive/touring/commuting bike, or even an entry-level racing/triathlon bike. here’s nothing like the acquisition of a new bike to renew your enthusiasm for cycling. Especially if the bicycle is of a style you don’t already own. Singlespeed/fixie and hub gear bikes require far less maintenance than bicycles with multiple sprockets and exposed derailleur gears, so they’re a wise choice for winter riding. Riding a singlespeed/fixie builds fitness and strength because it obliges you to use leg power rather than gears to get up hills If you own a decent quality road or mountain bike, riding a derailleur-less bike saves you wasting your posh bike’s transmission. If you are looking for a fabulous all-weather bicycle, never forget that the Reynolds steel frame touring bike has been the first choice of millions of informed bicyclists since the 1930s. If you sometimes literally tire of cycling, an electric bike gives you the means to enjoy cycling in the fresh air, but it takes far less out of you, energy-wise. These are just a few of the non-mainstream options available at the Bike Co-op. If you’re looking for more inspiration, visit www.edinburghbicycle.com.

When you do that, you can make the Plug even more stripped-down by removing the rear brake and its old-school clip-on cable guides.

This is no surprise if you consider that if you switched the bars and levers from drop bars to MTB riser bars or flats, the Voyage would look like, and offer a ride similar to, the Ridgeback Meteor (P.20).

UNIQUE ALFINE HUB GEAR / AVID BB-EQUIPPED DROP BAR HYBRID

With its triple butted aluminium frame and 700x35 Continental tyres, the Focus Planet TR 1.0 is a speed-hybrid, but with subtle twists. It’s gear change mechanisms are protected from the elements inside Shimano’s smoothest, best-sealed Alfine 8-speed hub gear. Continuing this bike’s low-maintenance theme, instead of a chain, this transmission features a non-stretch Gates carbon drive belt, so you’ll never have to oil it. Tektro hydraulic disc brakes are the perfect finishing touch on a bike that’s as easy to care for as it is to ride.

Genesis bikes are the creation of Shimano’s UK importer, Madison, so they usually have first dibs on the latest Shimano innovations. That’s why the Day 01 is one of the few production bikes that matches Shimano’s disc brake-compatible Alfine 8-speed hub with Shimano Virsa STI Dual Control levers for drop handlebars. (Alfine levers were previously exclusively made for flat bars.) If you’re looking for a drop-bar chromoly steel commuter bike with all-weather hub gears and Avid BB5 disc brake reliability, Day 01 is your number one choice.

ROSY CHEEKS, GLISTENING COBWEBS AND HOT CHOCOLATE. Judging by how the cyclepaths we ride are less used in winter, it’s obvious that many riders hang up their bikes round about the time the clocks go back. That’s a shame because one of the pleasures of cycling is that it’s a wonderful way to experience the changes of the seasons. Winter might be cooler but the air can be fresher, the mornings brighter and you often get those less-used cyclepaths and trail centres to yourself. Just a few adjustments to your wardrobe and your bike can set you up for enjoying winter. Properly equipped you’ll look upon cycling as a daily opportunity to get in touch with the real world. This 2-page spread features a dozen favourite items of clothing and equipment, designed to see you safely through winter. Check edinburghbicycle.com to view hundreds more.

LIT UP LIKE A

CHRISTMAS TREE A

s well as helping you get seen, riding with fully operating bike lights is a legal requirement after dark. Self-preservation aside, riding with lights helps counter the tedious cliché that cyclists are all outlaws. Using lights helps win the argument that cycling deserves respect (and infrastructure funding). Thanks to the LED revolution we are in the happy position of being able to offer you a more economical and more impressive range of lights than ever before. Alternatively, some of our customers offer their own original lighting solutions. Thanks to Ron Smith for his fairy-lit Dawes pic and to Craig Bradley for his similarly-themed quote.

Altura had been a well-respected cycle clothing and bag manufacturer for many years. Then, in 2004, they had a stroke of genius. They created the Night Vision Jacket, featuring retro-reflective chevrons and logos on near-every square inch of the jacket that a car light might shine upon. Cycling Plus gave it a perfect 10, concluding: ‘Well done Altura, you’ve just shown everyone how to make a commuter jacket properly.’ Since then, the Night Vision range has evolved. The best-selling Evo proves that a jacket doesn’t have to be yellow to get you seen. Its softmesh lining makes it cosy and wearable - even when worn over just a base layer. Altura then brought out equally waterproof Night Vision Bags, Overshoes, and Pannier Covers, followed by Night Vision wind-cheating tights and gloves. Other companies such as Met and Polaris also saw the light and brought the same glow-in-the-dark vibe to their respective lids and slap straps. Reflective clothing and kit make sense. It’s more noticeable by day than a bike light. It’s lighter weight (no batteries required). It helps ensure you never suffer a SMIDSY (‘Sorry mate I didn’t see you’) altercation. To view our complete range of reflectives go to www.edinburghbicycle.com/nightvision

“I commute by bike everyday all year round. When the days get shorter and my commute gets darker between South Queensferry and Fife I wrap some battery operated fairy lights around my body. It helps me to be seen on the road but adds a little magic to the ride. The best part is I often get a lot of waves and smiles from drivers who give me extra room on the road and the kids in the back of the car love it when passing me. Anything that makes me safer and drivers smile at a cyclist instead of getting irritated is fantastic in my book... Plus it’s like a little bit of Christmas all through the winter.”.

OWNED BY CYCLISTS FOR CYCLISTS Imagine visiting, telephoning or emailing a shop and you know that the person looking after you is either an owner of that business, or on their way to becoming one. You should be pretty confident that the staff dealing with your query will do their all to ensure you have a good experience. And that in a nutshell is the Bike Co-op difference. Every Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op employee is invited to become an equal member of the co-operative after working with us for 12 months. Currently (1 September 2012) out of our 159 employees we have 113 co-op members. The 46 who are not yet members are serving their one-year ‘apprenticeship’ and will in all likelihood become full Co-op Members. Every Co-op member, from our managing director who has been with us since 1996, to the sales assistant who started last July, are equal owners of the Bike Co-op with an equal voting share. We have a hunch that sharing the responsibility of ownership gives our staff a fantastic incentive to try harder to offer the best service we can. That’s how we have strived to run our business since 1977 when three founder members with a passion for bicycles opened a wee repair shop called Recycles Co-op. By 1985 our offer had evolved beyond just repairing bikes. By then we were established as among the most advanced bicycle retailers in the UK. It made sense to rename ourselves more accurately as Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op (see black & white graffiti pic below). Three of the Co-op members from ‘85 are still with us (Mike, George and Ged). The colour pic, taken at Glentress, illustrates our continued dedication to biking, and to doing things co-operatively.

BENEFITS OF SHOPPING WITH THE UK’s ORIGINAL BICYCLE CO-OPERATIVE From our price match promise to supporting grass roots cycling we believe you will notice the difference when you shop online or in-store at Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op.

TRY BEFORE YOU BUY You’ve seen a bicycle in this catalogue. You’ve checked its full spec at edinburghbicycle.com. You think this could be the bike for you. But you’d like to compare it with another bike on the next page. There’s only one way to be sure. Pop down to any of our shops and you will be welcome to take our display bikes out to test ride. One ride and you may well notice the subtle differences that will make one bike better for you than its closest rival.

PROFESSIONALLY-ASSEMBLED BIKES You might find this hard to believe but, unlike the majority of today’s manufactured goods, bicycles are delivered to bike shops in a semiassembled state. It’s therefore the bike shop’s responsibility to ensure the bicycle is fully functional and safe. Bicycle assembly is a responsibilty we take very seriously at Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative. That’s why we devote an average of one hour assembling each bike because that’s how long it takes a trained mechanic to ensure the wheels are trued, brakes and gears adjusted, cables tensioned and nuts and bolts secured. If we have to spend longer, say because the bike’s hydraulic disc brakes need to be bled, we will put in the necessary time to ensure the bike works to its full potential.

Tested in Scotland, this wet lube keeps your chain lubricated in situations where lesser lubes would wash off. Yet its clever German plant-based, petroleum-free formula doesn’t get nearly as gungy as some chain lubes we’ve tried. Reinforced with dry-but-slippery graphite, you can use this chain lube on your cables to ensure they slide sweetly in their housings. Similarly, if you own a sticky lock, a couple of drops of Bio Lube should free it up. To sum up, in any situation where you once searched for the oil can, you can now simply reach for your bottle of Revolution Bio Lube.

REVolution ascent pro £449.99 GENUINE TRAIL-WORTHY MOUNTAIN BIKE

If you want the lightest, strongest frame possible on a sub-£500 MTB, it’s got to be aluminium. When it comes to fork travel, 120mm is the magic number for UK trail park riding. If you can easily lock out the travel for smooth road ascents, all the better. For ultimate control, hydraulic disc brakes and grippy name-brand tyres are a given. With its 7005 aluminium alloy frame, SunTour 120mm LO fork, Tektro hydraulic disc brakes and Conti tyres, the Ascent Pro is built on all we have learned over 2 decades, producing quality own-brand MTBs.

REVOLUTION SPUR XC £249.99

REVOLUTION SPUR XC DISC £299.99

BEST BUY ENTRY-LEVEL WOMEN’S-SPECIFIC MTB

THE SPUR XC WITH THE BEST UPGRADE POSSIBLE

The Revolution Spur XC is a perfect intro to the delights of mountain biking. ‘Women’s-specific’ means that this MTB’s (mountain bike’s) frame has a shorter, lower top tube (crossbar) than the otherwise identically equipped gents’ Ascent XC (P.41). This makes the Spur XC safer (more stepover clearance) and more comfortable (you don’t have to overstretch to reach the handlebars) for the majority of women.

Disc brakes are a fantastic upgrade because moving the brakes from the crud-attracting wheel rims to the relatively clean hubs makes for more predictable stopping power. Disc brake pads are harder and they last longer, so you won’t have to spend as much time adjusting the brakes to compensate for the pads wearing thin. Your wheel rims will also last longer now they are no longer being worn down by the pads.

REVOLUTION ASCENT XC £249.99 GUARANTEED PERFORMANCE - EVEN AT THIS ENTRY-LEVEL PRICE

The Ascent XC is equipped to ensure that even our entry-level Revolution MTB (mountain bike) works a treat. Our lifetime-guaranteed 7005 aluminium frame has been proven on Revolution MTBs for more than a decade. The SunTour 63mm travel fork (which you can lock out for easier uphills), Shimano 3x7 EZ Fire gears and Tektro V-brakes - in fact all the bikes’ major mechanisms - are similarly sound.

LIGHTER WEIGHT AND BETTER EQUIPPED KIDS’ BIKES

GIRLS’ OWN REVOLUTION MOUNTAIN BIKES

With its brushed aluminium frame, 20” alloy wheels, Shimano 6-speed gears and Tektro V-brakes, the Revolution Cairn 20 is a lighter weight and better equipped mountain bike for boys and girls from around 5-6 year old up till they’re 8-10.

From their aluminium alloy frames to their suspension forks, Revolution Skye mountain bikes are the technically equal of the 2 Revolution Cairn bikes. The one differences you’ll notice are the Skye bikes’ extra stepover clearance and their more spangly finish. At around 12 kg for the 20”-wheel version and 13 kg for the 24, both the Skye and the Cairn are as light as you will get at this kind of price.

When they get older (roughly 8-14) children graduate to a bigger frame with 24” wheels and a wider range of 21 gears, hence the Revolution Cairn 24.

REVOLUTION HERITAGE DELUXE £399.99 WERE PROUD OF OUR HERITAGE

Our Heritage Deluxe proves that elegant traditional-styled bikes are a great way to travel in the 21st Century. Its tall handlebars with faux leather grips, its matching sprung saddle and its swoopy unisex frame invite you to step on the pedals and enjoy the ride perhaps with a flask of tea and a bag of buttered scones in the wicker basket. True to its great British biking heritage, it boasts Sturmey Archer hub gears and hub brakes which, along with the bike’s full mudguards, chain guard and kick stand, help make biking a cleaner and more civilized experience.

REVOLUTION PATHFINDER WOMEN’S £299.99

BEST EQUIPPED COMMUTER HYBRID FOR THE MONEY

IF CYCLING IN COMFORT MEANS RIDING TALL IN THE SADDLE YOU’RE ON THE RIGHT PATH WITH THIS BIKE

THE STEP-THROUGH LADIES’ FRAME TAKES PATHFINDER EASY RIDING TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Although it shares the Ascent XC mountain bike’s (P. 41) frame and wheels, the higher handlebars, the 3/4-length chromoplastic mudguards and the zero-maintenance rigid steel fork make the Revolution Trailfinder a more civilised solution for city riding. When you take to the towpaths, you’ll discover that the Trailfinder is the perfect Sustrans route master.

The Revolution Pathfinder is our statement that you don’t have to sacrifice comfort to enjoy a bike ride. The Pathfinder’s defining feature is its high-rise handlebars. Compared with many of today’s performance bicycles, which oblige you to stretch flat-backed to reach the low bars, the Pathfinder lets you sit upright, all the better to take in the view as you ride along.

This version of the Pathfinder comes with the same 50mm-travel suspension fork, identical 26x1.95”semi-smooth tyres and equally reliable Shimano 21-speed EZ Fire gears and Tektro V-brakes as the gents’ model to the left. The difference here is that the Pathfinder Women’s 7005 alloy frame is of the step-through variety, making it even easier to step out on.

Otherwise this Heritage boast the same 7005 alloy unisex frame, alloy wheels, 700x37 tyres, pannier rack, chromoplastic mudguards, and QR (quick release) basket on swept-back bars as its Deluxe sibling.

REVOLUTION COUNTRY EXPLORER £674.99

REVOLUTION COUNTRY PREMIER £799.99

OUR PERENNIAL BEST-SELLING TOURING BIKE

REYNOLDS STEEL TOURING BIKE WITH DISC BRAKES

COMFORT GUARANTEED OVER THE LONG HAUL

Our first ever own-brand bicycle was a best buy in hi-tensile steel touring bikes called the Edinburgh Country. That was in 1985. Since then the Country has been refined and upgraded, so it now features a lighter weight and more stable aluminium frame; Shimano 2203 STI 3x8 Dual Control gear shifters, Tektro cantilever brakes, mudguards and alloy rack. One constant is that it remains a best buy in British touring bikes.

The Explorer is an essay in marrying the best of the old with the new. The frame delivers the bright, comfortable ride that thin-wall Reynolds CrMo steel has long been famed for. Stopping power comes courtesy of the most significant improvement in bicycle technology over the past decade - disc brakes - and not just any old brakes. It comes with Avid BB5s, ball bearing actuated for instant engagement and release.

The Country Premier takes the key features of the Explorer - the Reynolds frame and the Avid BB5 cable-operated disc brakes. Then it’s upgraded with Shimano LX 3x9 STI shifters, rear mech and chainset (with Hollowtech 2 bottom bracket) and Shimano SPD pedals. To ensure maximum comfort, we followed the example of adventure cyclists such as Mark Beaumont, and fitted multi-position ergo bars.

REVOLUTION TRACK £349.99

REVOLUTION CROSS £449.99

REVOLUTION CROSS PRO £849.99

STRIPPED-DOWN SINGLESPEED/FIXIE AESTHETIC

FAST ON GRASS, FLEET ON THE STREET

AUTHENTIC ROAD BIKE W/MUDGUARD CLEARANCE

The Track illustrates what Revolution bikes are all about - to create beautifully executed yet affordable bicycles. The lightweight alloy frame’s track fork ends (AKA drop outs) make it easy to ensure perfect chain tension - a singlespeed essential. The flip-flop rear hub (which spins on cartridge sealed bearings rarely seen on a sub-£1,000 bike) makes it easy to switch between fixed and freewheel modes.

Cross bikes are inspired by cyclo-cross - a century-old winter sport pioneered by roadies who fitted wider, more knobbly tyres to their road bikes to make them fit for cross-country racing. Not surprisingly, a cross bike can be a practical winter training/commute/all-purpose bike which, with its lighter weight alloy road frame and drop bars, offers a faster more exciting ride than a regular hybrid bike.

Upgrading the gears from Shimano 2300 3x8 to Tiagra 2x10, and the fork from steel to carbon, and polishing the 7005 alloy frame instead of painting it makes the Cross Pro, at 10.8kg, more than a kilo lighter than the standard Revolution Cross. This light weight underlines the fact that the Cross pro is like an old-school road bike, but with 700x35 cross tyres (which many riders swap for 700x25 slicks) w/mudguard clearance.

SCINTILLATING ROAD BIKE-LIKE RIDE WITH FLAT BARS

Looking for minimum complication? Consider this singlespeed/fixie which has no gears or shifters and just a single chainring and rear cog. The benefits of this setup include less weight, less to go wrong, less to pay and less maintenance required. Its aluminium alloy frame and hi-ten fork are light and sound as are its CST 700x32 puncture-resistant tyres on its practical, nutted alloy wheels (flip-flop rear).

While singlespeed has its appeal you might be more interested in this version of the Courier which offers all the gearing (Shimano Acera 8-speed) you might require for everyday city cycling. The Revolution Courier Race is a wonderful option if you’re looking for road bike-like speed but prefer flat bars (with familiar mountain bike brake levers and Rapidfire gear shifters) over drop handlebars.

Then the V-brakes make way for Clarks mechanical disc brakes to help ensure better all-weather braking performance thanks to their longer lasting, hence lower-maintenance, pads.

With its wider, more rugged 700x42 tyres, its 75mm-travel SunTour NVX fork with lockout, its Tektro hydraulic disc brakes and its Shimano Acera 3x8 Rapidfire transmission, the Pursuit is designed to be the most versatile Courier bike we have ever produced. MOUNTAIN BIKES £399-£550 THE WINTER IS ALWAYS BRIGHT ON A MOUNTAIN BIKE Probably more than any other type of bicycle, a mountain bike is made for winter. Its chunky tyres can grip snowy roads or muddy trails where slimmer tyres might slither. Owning a mountain bike gives you an incentive to escape at the time of year when you’re least likely to venture outdoors. Mountain biking has so many benefits. Here are 3 of them. 1. The freedom to explore - ‘Ride natural’ and you get time to yourself (or selves), often in a car-free environment. A day or weekend away, perhaps bothy-biking, will take you to places you couldn’t attempt in any other vehicle over distances you wouldn’t contemplate on foot. 2. Versatility - even an hour on a trail centre loop will recharge the batteries after a day at work. 3. Exhilaration - whether you’re negotiating a tricky path without dabbing or flying downhill, mountain biking is pure fun. Any of the mountain bikes on these pages can offer this freedom, versatility and exhilaration. In 2011/12, Specialized’s 29”-wheel MTBs started with the £1,000 Carve. The new Hardrock Sport Disc 29er makes the benefits of bigger wheels more affordable in 2012/13. Bigger tyres offer more traction and more cushioning with the result that the bike can float over roots & rocks that smaller wheels might stutter over. Given the higher speeds this 29er will attain you’ll be pleased to see this Hardrock comes upgraded with hydraulic disc brakes.

One glance at the pic and you get an idea what Cannondale mean when they call this frame ‘Trail Optimised’. It’s oversized and reinforced where most required - hence the 1.5” head tube. Its skinny SAVE (Synapse Active Vibration Elimination) stays help damp shock when the back wheel hits big bumps. Schwalbe Rapid Rob 26x2.1” tyres and Cannondale’s own hydraulic disc brakes (upgraded from last year’s Trail SL 5 with mechanical disc brakes) deliver confidence-inspiring control on the trails.

29” tyres make this Giant Revel even faster on the climbs and more cushioned on the downhills than a 26”-wheel Revel. In the Giant hierarchy, zero is better than 1. This Revel is therefore upgraded with Shimano Acera 3x9 Rapidfire shifters and front mech and a Deore rear mech. The 80mm-travel SunTour fork and the Tektro HDC300 hydraulic disc brakes offer the familiar reliable performance that has made these components the first choice of near-every MTB maker, spec’ing bikes at this price.

cannondale trail sl 3 £749.99 ROCKSHOX AND SHIMANO HYDRAULIC EQUIPPED

The Cannondale Trail SL 3 shares the same superb frame as the Trail SL 5 on the previous page. Given a bit more budget to play with, Cannondale go to town on the spec. From the first name in bicycle suspension, we have RockShox XC30 forks. These coil-sprung forks boast a leg-top TurnKey lockout dial. This lockout features a clever blow-off valve, so the fork retains small-bump compliance should you

48

take an unexpected hit when you’ve locked out the fork for bob-free climbs. Then the hydraulic disc brakes are upgraded to the familiar reliability we have come to expect from a set of Shimano BR-M446s. Similarly the gear shifting is enhanced with Shimano Alivio Rapidfire 3x9 shifters and front mech and a dedicated, low-profile MTB Deore Shadow rear mech. Put it all together and you get a better trail bike.

MOUNTAIN BIKES £999-£3,250 I

f our entry level mountain bikes on previous pages are trail ready, why pay more?

Spending more buys you a bike that’s easier to ride in every way. A bike with a lighter frame is much easier to climb uphill. Especially if its wheels also weigh fewer pounds, and they spin near-friction-free on cartridge bearings. Spending more buys you components, forged from better materials to closer tolerances. Higher spec shifters and mechs give you the confidence that the chain will make it to the required cog or chainring every shift without hesitation. Similarly, quality hydraulic disc brakes are easier to modulate to the level required from light speed scrubbing to emergency stopping power. You’re going to have to spend more if you want the benefits of full suspension - i.e. bump-damping, rock-taming shock absorption that enables you to ride in maximum comfort and/or maximum speed with minimal weight penalty. One final word of advice. Once they get into cycling quite a few of our customers tell us that they wished they had invested in a better bike from the start. Nobody ever says they wish they had bought a worse bike.

specialized stumPjumper FSR COMP evo 26 £2,499.99 LIKE THE LEGENDARY STUMPIE FSR ON STEROIDS

With its 150mm travel, its 26x2.3” Purgatory/Butcher Control tyre combo, its 72cm low-rise bar and its cool, remote handlebar-controlled Specialized Command seat post, the Evo is like a pumped-up version of the legendary Stumpjumper FSR. Specialized’s unique Autosag valve makes it easy to dial in perfect sag with one push of a button on the customised-for-Specialized Fox FLOAT shock. The shock’s genius new CTD damper makes it simple for even first-time mountain bikers to tune the suspension for climbs, trails and descents via

a click of its dial. The RockShox Revelation RC3 fork complements the rear shock perfectly. The EVO climbs better than any 6”/150mm-travel bike has a right to. As for the downhills, we’ll leave it to bikeradar.com to describe. ‘If the Stumpjumper FSR is the epitome of a mildmannered trail all-rounder, the EVO is its wild, slightly unhinged cousin. Those slack angles, extra 15mm (0.7in) of travel and unflinchingly rigid chassis enable enough gravity-fuelled hooliganism to slap a grin on any rider’s face.’

WHYTE 629 29er £999.99 WHYTE’S GLORIOUS 29er DEBUT

Whyte display their signature frame geometry savvy with the 629 - their 29er debut. The shorter head tube compensates for the longer fork legs that 29” wheels require, so the handlebars are no higher than they would be on a 26”-wheel Whyte, so you can still carve it round corners. Similarly, curving the seat tube forward creates the room required for the larger wheel so the 629 retains the quick-handling benefits of a tight rear end.

AFFORDABLE TRAIL-WORTHY FULL SUSPENSION

COMES WITH FRAME FIT FOR £5,250 WHYTE 146S XI

The Giant Trance X3 hits at least 2 sweet spots. 1. Its 120mm travel is just right for UK trails. 2. It’s one of the least expensive trail-worthy full suspension mountain bikes money can buy. Trail-worthy means that, at around 14kg, it’s light enough to get you to the top of the hill. With its highly-evolved Maestro suspension and its AluxX SL-grade aluminium frame, you can be confident that the Trance X3 will always reach the bottom of the hill in one piece.

For 2012/13 Whyte have come even closer to achieving what they originally set out to do with their best-of-the-best 146 model. That is to produce a 146mm-travel trail bike that could climb like the best XC bikes whilst rivalling DH rigs on the downhills. This year’s frame is 11% torsionally stiffer than last year’s version (which we reckoned was close to perfection). Talking of perfection, you owe it to yourself to sample this bike’s latest Fox 34 Float CTD shock and fork.

MOUNTAIN BIKES WOMEN’S whyte 802 £699.99 WHYTE’S FIRST WOMEN’S MOUNTAIN BIKE

It might be their obsession with getting every detail right. It might be their UK-proof designs. It might be their unique aesthetic. It might be their fantastic value for money. It might be a combination of all these good things, but Whyte has been (we think, deservedly) our fastest growing mountain bike and hybrid brand over the past 3 years. So when they announced they were producing their first women’s trail hardtail (based upon the unisex Whyte 801 (P.49) but with a shorter, lower top tube) we had to agree that this was the best news for female mountain bikers this year.

Sizes: XS-M. Colour: White Matt. Web Ref: 15168

HERE COME THE GIRLS ‘I love the challenge of getting up a hill, negotiating tight corners and riding over humps and bumps. Then speeding downhill, flying round corners and over the trail. You are very much in the moment and it is difficult not to end the downhill with a huge smile on your face’ Co-op member and Whyte MTB owner, Sheila. Girls who get into mountain biking often become the sport’s strongest advocates. Take Glentress in the Scottish Borders. Emma and Tracy’s famous Hub Cafe and MTB-skills courses helped earn Glentress Forest its status as a world-class trail centre. The upsurge in women’s mountain biking is, in no small part, thanks to the genius of the bike companies featured on this 2-page spread. Giant, Specialized, Whyte and Cannondale have put years of research (and riding) into developing mountain bikes, whose frame geometries and component selection are carefully tuned to fit the majority (around 85%) of women. The happy result is a choice of MTBs that handle better and allow you to ride faster (or with less effort) and enjoy the whole mountain bike experience without any compromise in performance.

OUR FIRST WOMEN’S-SPECIFIC 29er

THE UNIQUELY SMOOTH RIDE OF A CANNONDALE

FOX FLOAT-EQUIPPED TRANCE-LIKE RIDE

This is our first women’s-specific 29”-wheel mountain bike. The advantage of bigger wheels is that they roll over obstacles easier. What’s more, larger wheels reduce rolling resistance and are less likely to lose momentum when riding over ruts, so they tend to be quicker. Bigger tyres offer a bit more cushioning (AKA free suspension). This version of the Myka also benefits from coming with hydraulic disc brakes which are more powerful and require less maintenance than cable-operated brakes.

When you ask a Cannondale owner what they most like about their bike, the reply you most often hear is that It rides so smoothly. This is no accident. Renowned as the company who first popularised the art of building a bike with oversized aluminium tubing, Cannondale have refined their craft so their Trail SL4’s rear stays are among the skinniest and hence most shock absorbent you’ll find on any mountain bike. Hence that uniquely smooth Cannondale feel you’ll appreciate every ride.

Even the most avid mountain biking advocate will admit that riding rocky downhills transmits shock that can give your body a pummelling. No wonder MTBs sans suspension are called hardtails. Ride the same downhill on a bike like the Giant Trance X2 and the only physical stress you might suffer is the effort to suppress your grin. This bike stands out for coming with our favourite Fox Float suspension front and rear, featuring Fox’s truly useful CTD (climb, trail, descent) easy-click adjustment dial.

We donned the waterproofs and headed down to Glentress and put some of our favourite gear to the test. Never mind Dirty Dancing, we had the time of our lives! One of the joys of mountain biking is that it helps awaken the inner hippopotamus in us all. Fun in the mud is a feeling that’s probably lain dormant since you were 7. Unless you were into rugby. It’s so liberating to have a whale of a time with your mates everyone covered in clay and spray - nobody caring what they look like. Why do you think Glastonbury is so popular? And just as Glasto-goers know to pack their wellies, muddy mountain bikers have learned that GoreTex really is the biz. Then they discover equally wonderful but less well known gems such as SealSkinz socks, which will keep your feet dry through water crossings, or 5 Ten shoes for clambering up muddy inclines. On this double-page spread, the Bike Co-op staff share our first-hand experience of the stuff we wear when the weather’s less than fair. FOR WHYTE MOUNTAIN BIKES, MUD-CLEARANCE IS THE FIRST PRINCIPLE, NOT AN AFTERTHOUGHT We asked Whyte designer Ian Alexander about their obsession with making the most UK-proof mountain bikes on the market. This got Ian waxing about the brown stuff.

‘At Whyte we don’t consciously set out to go mud-testing, we don’t particularly go out of our way to find it, we simply go riding all year round, day in, and day out. The stuff is usually always there, somewhere, lurking around the next bend, waiting on the outside of your favourite apex, enticing you to run wide and get stuck in, or stubbornly refusing to dry up in the bottom of a G-Out, just after the little drop off, giving you no option but to plough through and out the other side. The summer of 2012 has given us the longest extended period of mud testing we’ve known as MTB designers. The interaction of bike and mud, in all its subtly different and varying forms of consistency, viscosity, colour, abrasiveness and general long-term presence means mud is a constant reference point.

We don’t really do anything without a thought to it, and its effect on design and aesthetics can be profound. Of course, mud is a simple formula: Mud = Soil+Water, and this legendary combination has long proved devastating to the off-road bicycle. We try and go one step further by offering a lifetime guarantee on our suspension pivot systems. We push ourselves to try and protect and preserve them from the design stage. Our seat clamp design eradicates the long slot opening at the rear of the seat tube which exposes the frame. We add bosses to the downtube to bolt on Crud Guards rather than having to zip-tie or use O-rings that scrape and scratch the paintwork when the mud is there, and so it goes on... Perhaps the real point of realisation in all of this came when a suspension manufacturer asked us to UPS them some of our legendary British mud for their ‘contamination room’ lab testing...’

A BETTER BALANCE BIKE BY DESIGN

ALLOY FRAME + CARBON PARTS = DREAM MACHINE

SAFE AND SOUND

As with every balance bike, an absence of cranks makes it easier for the youngster to learn how to steer and balance without fear of dunking their ankles on the pedals. Superior spec (birch/marine ply wooden frame, cartridge sealed bearing wheels, faux leather saddle) and innovation (a restricted steering option prevents early learners loosing control by oversteering) make the Early Rider Lite a better balance bike by design.

An alloy-frame alternative to a wooden Early Rider. And what a frame! Its raw aluminium finish truly looks the business. So does the riveted saddle. Forged dropouts ensure wheel security and ease of fitting. These wheels retain the cartridge sealed bearing hubs that make every Early Rider such a smooth ride. Also unique to any bike at this price range, the carbon bars and carbon seatpost help ensure this is the lightest, best-handling balance bike you can gift a child.

Like some of the best bikes in the world, this Ridgeback 12” wheeler for infants and toddlers is built with a sound, heat-treated 6061 aluminium alloy frame. Alloy wheels and V-brakes continue the quality theme. 12x1.75” mini mountain bike tyres promote stability. A large colour-coordinated chainguard totally encloses the chain and its chainset and keeps them out of harm’s way. The stabilisers, which can be useful, are removable once outgrown.

early rider juno £68.99 THE SAFEST INTRODUCTION TO EARLY RIDING

When we saw our first Early Rider balance bike we thought it displayed Dyson-like British design genius. This comparison becomes even more apt when you hear about Juno. Early Rider’s inventor, Andy Loveland, describes his Ride-On-style balance bike as a Spherovelo. Replacing the wheels with balls makes Juno an incredibly stable and confidence-inspiring first ride for kids as young as 1 year old. Once the youngster gains confidence, the Early Rider Juno can be set to ‘safely unstable’ mode. This encourages the child to develop the sense of balance and equilibrium required to keep upright and moving - same as a youngster would on a balance bike or a conventional bicycle. The difference here is that, because it rolls on balls rather than wheels, the Spherovelo is intrinsically more stable, so far less likely to tip the toddler over.

BETTER QUALITY MINI 12” WHEELER FOR GIRLS

LIGHTEST WEIGHT 12” WHEELER

LIGHTEST WEIGHT PINK 12” WHEELER

The Ridgeback Minny is technically identical to the Ridgeback MX12, but with a pink paint job and butterfly decals that some girls adore. Being a Ridgeback (one of the UK’s most admired bike companies) the Minny 12 has some fab features you might not necessarily notice at first glance. For instance, an integrated grab-handle at the back of the saddle gives you (the adult cycle instructor) a hand hold for supporting the bike when teaching your child how to ride.

Being a Specialized, the Hotrock 12 is a fantastic introduction to the pleasures of pedalling. Its frame, fork blades and wheel rims are all lightweight aluminium. In a world where heavy steel kids’ bikes remain the norm, the Hotrock 12 stands out for its noticeably lighter weight. The coaster rear brake is another nice touch. Instead of having to pull a lever (which can be a struggle if you’re 3 years old) the young rider simply has to back pedal to slow down.

Apart from its colour scheme, the Girls’ Hotrock 12 has the same informed aluminium-rich lightweight spec as the standard Blue/White model for boys and girls. Its colour-coordinated chainguard keeps moving parts safely out of harm’s way. The saddle has a grab handle. Stabilisers (though not approved of by every cycling expert) can help youngsters gain confidence on the bike, and they’re easily removable once they are no longer required.

14” WHEELS CAN BE THE HAPPIEST MEDIUM

ALUMINIUM-RICH SPEC CREATES 2 QUALITY BIKES

A BETTER BIKE FROM THE TYRES UP

The 14” wheel kids bike is less common than 12 and 16” sizes. However, the Ridgeback MX14 or the girls’ equivalent, the little Honey, can be the perfect choice for children, starting to outgrow a smaller bike, who can’t quite manage a 16” wheeler. Otherwise, the MX14 and the Honey boast similar quality aluminium alloy frames, wheels and V-brakes that make the MX12 and Minny (P57) such lovely little bikes.

The 6061 aluminium alloy frame and the equally corrosion-resistant aluminium alloy wheels, brake levers and V-brakes (with anti-skid modulators) put the Ridgeback MX16 (and its sweet sister, Melody) firmly in the quality kids’ bike bracket. Grippy 16x2” tyres inspire confidence. The lack of gears give the rider an early taste of the joys of singlespeed simplicity. Removable stabilisers come fitted as standard.

Available in both boys’ and the girls’ versions, the Hotrock 16 boasts an aluminium frame, alloy wheels and removable stabilisers. Then Specialized take it to the next level by making the fork, handlebars and stem all aluminium too (where most of their competitors spec steel). Then, to ensure a smooth-yet-forgiving ride, it’s shod with Rhythm Lite 16x2” rubber from that most illustrious tyre company, Specialized.

EARLY RIDER BELTER 16 £229.99 OIL-FREE, CHAIN-FREE, LIGHTEST WEIGHT BRITISH KIDS’ BIKE

Having won us over with their balance bikes, Early Rider’s next trick was to design this extraordinary pedal bike, featuring the clean oil-free Gates Belt Drive transmission, last seen on our £599.99 Belter (P.45). This carbon belt contributes to the Belter 16 coming in at an industry-leading low weight of just 5.6kg. Early Rider’s Andy Loveland revealed what inspired him to develop the Belter 16. ‘Weight is key to get kids riding effortlessly - if you consider the average 5 year old weighs 17kg, picking up and riding a 12kg steel bike is the equivalent of a 80kg man riding a 55kg bike. It just wouldn’t happen. Our bike is quite simply easier for a child to pick up and get moving which will mean they will love riding it.’

AUTHENTIC JUNIOR MTB WITH SR SUSPENSION

THIS ONE’S FOR THE LONG RUN

Once kids hit 5 or 6, they’re usually big enough to handle a 20” wheeler. They’re also ready to tackle terrain where hill-climbing gears and bumpdamping suspension forks become desirable. The Ridgeback MX20 and Harmony make both these upgrades available to the young rider in the shape of user-friendly Shimano twist-shift 6 speed gears and reliable coil-sprung 40mm-travel XCT forks from suspension experts, SR SunTour.

I (the Bike Co-op’s Ged) bought a Hotrock 20 for the grandson when he was 6. He’s now 18 so that bike has been passed on over the years. Now with its 4th happy owner, the Hotrock 20 is still going strong. With its Specialized A1 aluminium frame, SunTour 40mm-travel fork and Shimano 6-speed gear changes, we are confident this 2013 version of the Hotrock 20, in both boys’ and girls’ versions, will be equally good for the long run.

Blank was launched in 2004 in Cheddar, Somerset, when Rob Hill and Andy Bishop of Rupture bikes (P.61) decided to create a second BMX brand. Blank bikes are built upon their years of experience specing, designing and importing some of the best value BMXs available.

‘Blank is another UK-born brand designed to offer simple, quality bikes at reasonable prices.’ Alex.

Truly the BMX pioneers, Mongoose produced their first bike in 1975.

‘Mongoose have been in the game longer than most of us have been breathing. But despite many years of producing solid bikes, they haven’t rested on their laurels and continue designing great bikes with great specs-for-the-money. You’ll even find them sneaking in quality components from Odyssey. Alex.

TOOLS

MAINTENANCE At the Bike Co-op we believe that the bicycle is a classic 19th Century invention that remains more relevant than ever in the 21st century. One of the charms of the bicycle is that it wears its major mechanisms on the outside. This makes a bicycle more fixable than almost anything else made today, and offers further proof of the bicycle’s green credentials. You can fix or finesse even a decadesold bike to work as it should. You can learn to do it yourself, perhaps with the help of a manual or by attending one of our day classes (P.67). Alternatively, you can book your bike in to any of our shop workshops and leave it to our mechanics to look after your bike (P.67).

DRIVETRAIN Along with inflating your tyres , keeping your drivetrain clean and lubricated is the best thing you can do to keep your bike moving sweetly. If the gear mechs, cogs, cables and chain are caked with mud, they’re not going to shift very well, plus they will wear out quicker. Keep these parts clean and lubed, they can last 4 times longer and you’ll save yourself a fortune. You’ll find dozens of bike care products at edinburghbicycle.com/ maintainance. We have been particularly impressed with UK company Fenwick’s innovation in recent years. Their degreaser foams up like shaving cream and lifts the dirt, which can then be sprayed off with minimal scrubbing. Their Stealth Lube (which you drip on with a pipette!) was hailed by Triathlon mag as ‘Simply the best chain lube around, resisting grime brilliantly and staying put for longer.’

CHAIN WEAR Keeping the chain clean and lubricated is all about optimising the performance and longevity of your whole drivetrain. Eventually, however, even the best caredfor chain will begin to ‘stretch’. A stretched chain accelerates wear on everything it touches - the

64

chainrings, the rear cogs and the derailleur pulley wheels. You can save (or at least postpone) the £100+ required to replace these parts by checking your chain with a Park CC-3. Slip this tool onto the chain and it reveals when your chain has stretched 1% - the stage where it requires replacement before it wears out anything else.

There is a cleaning gene, and I can say categorically that I don’t have it. Whenever I go on a ride and get dirty, by the time I get home the last thing on my mind is cleaning bikes. Within 30 minutes of arriving home, I go from shower to sofa with a plate of whatever I can rustle up to refuel. Most of my bikes do make a noise or two, but I think it adds character.

CLEANING Cleaning your bike might be good for the soul, but you don’t want cycle scrubbing to steal too much of your free (riding) time - hence our labour-saving solutions, such as the legendary Muc-Off and the same company’s even more powerful Degreaser. Then we have curiosities such as Purple Harry Bike Floss, which reaches the few parts a Finish Line Brush might not, whilst helping to revive the fortunes of the UK pipe cleaner industry. 5 GREAT REASONS FOR CYCLING TO WORK 1. SAVE MONEY While the Bike to Work Scheme offers a low-cost incentive to take up cycling, the real savings become apparent when you discover how many hundreds (or thousands) of pounds you can save on fuel and fares when you switch to cycling.

2. SAVE YOUR BODY ‘Healthy employees are more efficient, more productive and take less time off work.’ TravelSmart, Australia.

3. SAVE YOUR BRAIN

Make your employers aware of a unique staff benefit that will save them money. Encourage them to visit our website edinburghbicycle.com/biketowork where they can find out all they will need to know about setting up a Bike to Work Scheme. Alternatively you can go on the website yourself and request Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op’s handsome Bike to Work Scheme brochure which you can then forward to your employer.

If you have any specific queries please email our dedicated Bike to Work team at: biketowork@edinburghbicycle.com

BIKE TO WORK SCHEME CUSTOMER FEEDBACK For first-hand accounts of how our Bike to Work Scheme works for our customers, go to our blog.

EDINBURGHBICYCLE.COM/BLOG/BIKE-TO-WORK

Healthy body, healthy mind. The very act of cycling to work ‘switches on’ the brain, making you more alert for the day ahead.

4. SAVE TIME Even in the most congested cities, the cyclist gets from A to B within a predictable time frame. To put it in a nutshell, pedalling makes people more punctual.

5. SAVE YOUR PLANET Burn calories, not petrol. You know it makes sense. Offering a Bike to Work Scheme helps your organisation qualify for Cycle to Work Guarantee status, which gets your workplace listed as an environmentally-friendly employer by the Department for Transport.

66

WE ALSO TAKE CYCLESCHEME CERTIFICATES Many employers operate their Cycle to Work Scheme via an agency called Cyclescheme. If that’s the case at your workplace, we are delighted to report that you can redeem Cyclescheme Certificates at any branch of Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op. If there is no Bike Co-op branch near you (yet) you can still order your Cyclescheme bike from us if you phone our online team on 0845 257 0808 or 0131 331 5010.

0845 257 0808 (lo-call rate) or 0131 331 5010 SERVICE COMMITMENT

FREE SAFETY CHECK

Every Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op shop has its own Service Centre. If you need a repair, service, upgrade or something fitted, simply wheel your bike in (though advance booking is always recommended). No job too big, no job too small. Good, honest, professional service guaranteed.

A trained mechanic will give your bike a free safety inspection, paying particular attention to the brakes, transmission, tyres, wheels and steering. We will then recommend the work required to make the bike good and give you an accurate estimate of the job’s expected cost.

SERVICES BASIC SERVICE £29 Basically, this is a quick checkover, but it might be all a lightly-used bicycle requires. • Check and adjust brakes and gears. • Check and inflate tyres.

STANDARD SERVICE £49

As Standard Service + • Complete strip down and rebuild including headset, bottom bracket and hubs (excludes hydraulic brakes, suspension forks & shocks). • All threads cleaned and chased. • Wheels trued & tensioned.

SUNDRY SERVICES Remember, we will consider any individual job big or small. Here are some of the most popular specific services we can offer.

• Check and adjust hubs, headset and BB. • Replace brake blocks/pads (if required). • Lubricate cables (replace if required). • Lubricate chain and derailleurs. • Check/tighten all nuts and bolts. • Test ride. • 6 month guarantee on all work carried out.

• On-the-spot puncture repair: £5 + the price of the tube. • Drivetrain clean & lube: £15. • Rim brake service: £15. • Disc brake bleeding: £15 per brake (price includes brake fluid). • Chain or cassette fitting: £8. • Hub service: from £15. • Fork fitting: £30. (If the fork costs £200 or more and you purchase it from Edinburgh Bicycle Co-op we will fit it for free.) • Wheel truing: from £10. • Wheel build: from £25. • Bike prep: unpacking, assembling & adjusting a boxed bike - for example, post flight: £40.

DELUXE SERVICE £89

PARTS NOT INCLUDED IN QUOTED PRICES

The Standard Service covers every externallyadjustable moving part of the bike, so it is much more thorough than a Basic Service. Plus the bike is test ridden, so we can confidently back up our Standard Service with a 6 month guarantee that covers all the work carried out on your bicycle. As Basic Service +

To make this service truly deluxe, we strip your bike down to the bare frame. Every part is carefully checked over before it is refitted. Serviceable bearings are regreased. New cables, bearings and brake pads are fitted if required. The drivetrain is thoroughly cleaned. If you ride every day, or you’re contemplating a big ride, or you want your bike to work better than new, we recommend you treat your bike to a Deluxe Service

Please note: prices quoted on this page cover labour charges. An additional charge will be made for any parts fitted at the service, such as brake blocks, cables and bearings, unless otherwise stated (for instance there is no charge for brake fluid when we bleed hydraulic disc brakes).

LEARN TO DO IT YOURSELF HALF-DAY CYCLE MAINTENANCE COURSE FOUNDATION £25 Here you will spend an afternoon learning the very basics - removing the back wheel, mending a puncture and externally adjusting brakes & gears under the supervision of an Edinburgh Bicycle mechanic. Beginners welcome. Maximum class size - 8 people.

FULL-DAY CYCLE MAINTENANCE COURSE INTENSIVE £49 Despite the name, our Intensive Course is a laid-back class in getting to know your bike.
