ntroducing Shakeel and Tash Toefy, aged 20 and 18 respectively, who are both currently studying in Cape Town at UCT. One may have the impression that they are both studying the same thing, however (just like their personalities ,as Shakeel sees it) they are studying in two different fields. Shakeel is in his second year as a Business Science student majoring in economics while Tash is a first year BA student majoring in ‘Film & Media’ and English. Another difference that Shakeel makes note of is their looks. Contrary to popular belief they are not twins as many people think, Shakeel says that he cannot see how people could think that. However, the paradox of the combination of the difference in and similarity, to one another, is what is key to their success. Both of them love fashion and intend to make a statement through their choice of clothing.

Their company Half & Halve has officially been in operation for 7 months yet it has been a long term goal of theirs since last year. Fortunately, these two young men had the support of both of their parents to start their own brand. They had the inspiration and encouragement from their mother as well as the skills of their father (who is a sports photographer/journalist/ guru). They combined their new found love for a DSLR with their love for fashion to start ‘Half & Halve’. The meaning behind the name depicts the pairing of brothers Shakeel and Tash Toefy. Much like the words ‘half and ‘halve’, they share similar interests but are two completely different facets both playing a crucial role in the brand. As brothers, they learnt to use their strengths to complement one another with a vision to share

their creative stories and create a platform to solidify their position in the industry. In addition to learning from their father, one of the most important aspects that they have learnt through the industry is the importance of networking and projecting yourself and your brand in a manner that people admire. Without forming these relationships, growth would be stagnant and the probability for success would decrease. “If you want to go far, go together.” Along with the lines of networking, they have worked with several reputable brands and creatives over the past few months while also trying to focus on a few of their own projects. They have worked with brands/designers such as Sissy Boy Jeans, Spree, Jenevieve Lyons and have covered various fashion weeks around the country.

hey have also been putting together some of their own projects such as ‘5 women, 5 questions’ with their focus on empowering women in the industry. They are currently working on ideas to take their brand further in the New Year but they don’t want to let the cat out of the bag just yet. As mentioned previously they have been attending a few fashion weeks, South African Menswear Week is definitely their favourite event of the year as it was the first event they have ever been granted media accreditation for. They have grown to know most of the staff and the rest of the photography crew which adds to the experience as well as the array of talented designers which never seem to disappoint. Although they are young, they do have some wise words to share, advice if you will. They suggest that you should not rush. Often you have these overwhelming ideas of what you want to do, where you want to work and who you’d like to work with, but it’s sometimes better to take things step by step and set realistic goals on a regular basis. They have always believed that slow progress is better than no progress. Don’t try and do too much, rather do as much as you’re able to and do it well. Ask for help. Don’t be scared to ask for advice or to find a mentor, as it always helps to have someone to talk to about issues you might encounter along the way. However, you may be wondering what motivates them and how have they become so successful. Shakeel and Tash believe that since they have both grown up not having everything handed to them on a silver platter, they have realized from a young age that they would need to work for what they want. This doesn’t necessarily mean that their parents and family weren’t there for them because it was, in fact, the complete opposite. Their family were and still are behind them every step of the way regardless of the outcome. Their motivation to be successful stems from numerous different facets of their life as they grew up being taught that hard work breeds success. Their hunger for success is simply for their family and their own personal growth.

ave you ever thought what your life would be like if you had no photographs? How difficult it would be to recollect the past? Imagine you had not a single picture of your childhood, imagine your 21st birthday party or if you are married, imagine your wedding without it! That’s a world we are very much, and thankfully so, unacquainted with. Photographs are one of the single most fantastic inventions. What’s even greater are the people who can wield a camera so that they capture what no one else can, capture us at the right angles with the right amount of light to compliment our features, the list obviously goes on and on. If you have such a friend, take a moment to appreciate their craft, it is, even though you haven’t thought about it, so much more than just pointing it in the right direction and pushing a button, though cameras can do a lot, they can’t do everything. I’d like to take a moment to introduce such a man, a photographer who is making a name for himself but taking good photos, pictures that people actually want to look at. You can always tell a good photographer from a mediocre one by what their photos tell you. If they are just photos of what is in front of them or if, when you look at it, you get more than just a picture, you see a story unfold, as though the picture is alive, it isn’t, but thanks to them, it is teeming with imagination, you can almost feel what the photographer felt, think what they thought, or think a host of new things you have never thought before.

Capturing a moment in such a way that it draws people to grandeur, is the work of a true photographer. Henry Marsh is a young photographer who, funny enough, is on the verge of completing his degree in industrial engineering from the University of Pretoria, who has pivotally been arrested by taking pictures. We asked him, “When you think about photography, what stirs in you”? And he said this, “ Every moment I have a camera in my hands I am a happy person”. His satisfaction lies in just being able to capture moments and with a very photojournalistic approach, “ I try my best to capture a moment as it happens”. Whilst keeping his ‘coaching’ during shoots to a minimum. How Henry started out as a photographer is a fantastic story. Henry was kicked out of university for a while, sadly, he never did tell us

“ Every moment I have a camera in my hands I am a happy person “ HENRY MARSH

why. During this time, to occupy his time he figured, “How about I take photos?” Needless to say, he liked it, he was then coaxed into further pursuing this new found skill and passion with a group called Drop Your Drink, they were probably his biggest supporters in the early days of his craft. Had it not been for his involvement with Drop Your Drink, he may never have picked up a camera again, the world would have been at a loss really. Since then he has been influenced by some of the big names in photography like Ett Venter, Dani Diamond, Tim Hulme, Ingrid Alice, Kyle van der Schyff, Gavin O’Neill, Garreth Barclay and Charlemagne Olivier and has even had the opportunity to work Bernard Brandt who has not only helped him to improve on his craft but has also become a very good friend.

“Being able to actually create something that at the end of the day may become quite tangible means a lot to me”. Naturally enjoying the thrill of creating something is one of the main things that drives Henry to take more pictures and another is the desire not to miss the beauty around us, how often we do that, we would walk right through something beautiful and take no note of it because we are enthralled by some or other device of darkness, a veil drawn over our eyes. Beautiful things, I mean really spectacular things, has taken a bit of a back seat and there are those, like Henry who are fighting to get it back in the place it deserves. He loves working with the two most beautiful aspects of life, nature and people, especially bands and concerts, he actually feels that being

“ I am a firm believer that the best camera you have is the camera you have with you. “ HENRY MARSH

EDITÉUR PLUS / THE SIXTH ISSUE

among a massive crowd and the stage is his favourite place to be. Henry says: “ I am a firm believer that the best camera you have is the camera you have with you.” Henry uses a Canon 6D and shoots mostly with a 50mm prime lens coupled, wisely, with off camera flash for all his paid photoshoots and for postproduction, the obvious choice is Adobe’s Lightroom and Photoshop combination. Henry’s favourite items are as you would have guessed, his 6D and the 50mm F1.4 lens, he is also fond of using a Tamron 70-200 F2.8 Lens and of course, a Wacom small tablet. If you’re an aspiring photographer, “Just go out and shoot”. It’s the trial and error of actually taking pictures that form your photos into good ones, there is no better way to learn what works and what doesn’t.

“No amount of reading will make you a better photographer,” says Henry. Since it is such a practical skill, you can learn what you need by practising, you can obviously learn from the experiences of others, but nothing trumps personal experience. And if you can’t see which pictures will look good and which ones won’t don’t worry, you can learn that too by, you guessed it, practice. And when you ‘make it’, don’t forget the people that were there for you when you weren’t as great, you can always make time for them, the people in your life are always more important than the things in your life.

“I think the first advice would be, having a passion and the patience”, says Özlem Akiki who started Maiax Blog in April this year and in her own words “luckily it was no joke”. Humour is scattered throughout the pages of her fashion and lifestyle blog, as Özlem brings practicality to the beauty and elegance we all long to acquire and maintain in our own lives. From fashion, fitness, interior, DIY, food and travel, Maiax blog is user-friendly, quick and fun to read. The blog is written in both English and Turkish and is currently streamed from the beautiful Cape Town; under the travel tab of the blog, there are great suggestions of what Cape Town has to offer. We chatted to Özlem and she gave some great insights into the ins and outs of blogging and how

“ I have the intention of turning my passion into a full-time job “ ÖZLEM AKIKI

visual storytelling is so important in gaining and maintaining a following, in the blogging industry. Özlem Akiki was born in Turkey in a small city called Aydin. After studying at university she went on to become an air hostess for Emirates in Dubai. Her training comes through when you see photos of her in the fashion section of her blog. She carries herself with confidence and greets you with her warm smile. She thoroughly enjoyed her time travelling the world and this was when digital marketing began to appeal to her. She decided to complete her Master’s degree in digital marketing and joined a digital agency in Dubai. She then met the love of her life. Her husband and she now have a two and half-year-old daughter, which takes up most of Özlem’s time.

ut the skills she developed at the digital agency gave her the confidence to start her own blog. It all began with a friend taking a photo of her daughter, capturing a moment, a detailed story in one single image. So Özlem bought herself a camera and began to discover photography. She followed many fashion and lifestyle bloggers and one day decided why not blog and share her inspiration especially her new inspiration in South Africa; because who wouldn’t. She then got started and designed her own website. She patiently began with the basics of photography and suggests when starting your own blog to do the same, for example investing in post editing software like Lightroom and Photoshop. She decided, however, that with her Fashion looks, she prefers to work with a professional photographer “as their creative spin can certainly leverage your blog’s visual journey”. For her Maiax Blog, she is currently working with photographer Angelika Kollin. Özlem loves to use visually interesting locations to generate her content and through that she develops a relationship by spreading the word of the location and vice versa. She hasn’t done much collaboration or had paid or sponsored content yet but she says, “I have the intention of turning my passion into a full-time job” and in that will look to develop relationships with brands that link with her own personal brand; another aspect of blogging she found to be important. “Better to be original”, says Özlem. She believes it is important to have an authentic voice that brings something different. It makes the stories you share, your own. There are so many online resources for creating your own website, learning how to get noticed and how to beat social media algorithms. It just takes research and dedication. But any disciplined person can do that. It’s the unique voice that produces the following.

When asked what she sees as her unique drive to being successful Özlem Akiki responded with, “I see success as a journey, as a progress, if you are moving forward even if it’s a little step then it’s a road full of success for me”. But she doesn’t stop there; success, for Özlem in blogging, is about authentically standing out across many social media platforms. She aims for her blog to start conversations and to have content that is both aspirational and attainable. One of Özlem’s dreams is to attend the Milan Fashion Week and what an incredibly vibrant, beautiful and fun blog post that would be. We look forward to reading it one day and so would you.

A mix of summertime sun, breathtaking beaches, daring dreams, and fantastic fun brought entrepreneurs Adam and Josh to the place they are today, this place being Granadilla Swim. Originating in the beautiful city of Cape Town, these two decided they would like to found a company based on personability, originality, locality, and at its base, being unique. The idea behind Granadilla Swim became a reality in the summer of 2014, while the two sat on the beach, contemplating the idea of having a pair of swim shorts which could last for years, whilst also containing a unique and homey style. At that time, they sported pairs of French swim shorts, but, regrettably, could not afford to

have a new pair each season. This predicament produced an idea, this idea bringing forth the speciality brand, Granadilla Swim. Adam and Josh have been frequently asked what makes this brand so much more exclusive than other swimwear brands, and their answer is essentially what has made this company so successful in such a short time. The difference is in the dream, this being that Granadilla Swim desires to make unique patterns with quality material, while at the same time, benefitting the surrounding infrastructure, and creating a personal feel, giving locals and tourists the ability to connect with the atmosphere around them.

The differing patterns available on each of the swim shorts are sent to a company in South Africa to be printed on the material, but they are not mass produced, because of the fact that differentiation among design creates an even further sense of personability. Only a selected amount of designs are printed, and the designs are changed regularly. All the designs, however, are inspired by locations which are recognisable to those, especially in the Cape areas. This not only produces exclusivity, but also seasonal variety, allowing those who regularly enjoy the beach to display a new selection as each summer comes along. A large conviction held by Adam and Josh is the fact that local businesses should be influential in the local society. In everything that

is being done, whether it be materials used or proceeds given, the regional areas are being significantly affected for the better. Granadilla Swim as a company realises that in order to bring forth a more successful business, giving is just as important as receiving. They give a portion of their proceeds to other local businesses, encouraging them to grow and to do the same, and all the expenses Granadilla Swim has to pay for, they pay to local factories. Their heart shows for the people, and whether rich or poor, Adam and Josh see an opportunity to give to each an opportunity to enjoy the beach life in style.

Granadilla Swim is growing, and it is growing fast. Just recently opening up a store in the brand new Menlyn Maine, Granadilla Swim is looking to expand beyond its Cape surroundings, and they are doing so quite successfully. They want to bring the ability for quality variety to as many places as possible, whilst still keeping the local feel. Shops have also opened up in Europe, and the response of the customers is overwhelmingly positive. Being able to bring attention to South Africa, especially its beautiful beachfront has been positive both for the company and for the country. The dream is much bigger than

swimwear; it is about switching and revolutionising the business culture in South Africa. While their goal is far from complete, Adam and Josh have high hopes and low stress. There are so many aspects of running one’s own company, but the main focus for these two business partners and friends continues to remain on enjoying the lifestyle which gave them the dream in the first place. They know, above all, to appreciate the carefree lifestyle of reclining on the white beaches on a sunny day, in a pair of well-made swim shorts, in a country of both potential and essential quality.

“Like handbags, watches are highly visual symbols of status, association and identity. Just think about the businessman you see wearing a Rolex versus the hipster you see with the Casio gold digital watch — each one says something about the wearer, intentionally or not.” -The Huffington Post Despite the digital age is replacing many things in this world, it has not been successful in eradicating the power of the wrist watch. In a survey taken by yahoo in over 40 countries, it was said that more than half of people claimed that they use the watch according to their clothing style and their attitude. “It makes it clear that above the timepiece the watches have made an unbeatable place in the body components.” Wrist watches will always have a place in fashion. Elan Time co is a company ran by Elan Schnider, a South African creative based in Cape Town. He has roots in the fashion photography and film industry. Although he is an app designer by trade his project are directed by his attraction to design and style. His company aims to link the space between expensive retail prices and luxury pieces. The story behind Elan Time Co begins with Elan’s desire to grow his fashion accessory collection, without the heavy costs that often go along with it. After looking around he was put off by the heavy retail prices he began doing some research into what goes into a watch. He then developed a style in his mind and thought of all the aspects that could go into it.

For those interested in doing something along these lines such as starting their own brand/fashion line Elan suggests, “Spend more time on your samples before going all in. Get feedback from people in the industry.
