EDITOR’S LETTER Greetings and a very warm welcome to the first issue of Editéur Plus Online Magazine. We couldn’t be more excited to have made it to this point. Editéur Plus is a minimalist online magazine that features African artists and fashionistas alike. Please give yourself sometime to get to know the layout of the magazine. Categories featured are fashion, lifestyle and travel. When we set out to create an online magazine, it was mostly going to be about fashion. During the development of Editéur Plus, we thought about our audience and many things came about: they were minimalists, fashionistas, travel enthusiasts and foodies alike. The main aim of this magazine is to feature African artists in all fields, as well as their successes. We are very excited to be collaborating with some influential individuals around us. Through lots of prayer and perseverance we are honoured to share this creative initiative with you. Also feel free to connect with us on Social Media. You can find our details on the Staff page. Welcome to Editéur Plus “L’inspiration à travers la vision.”

DROP YOUR DRINK A Pretoria-based music and photography blog with an interesting beginning and unusual future.

BY YETU DADA PHOTOGR APHERS DROP YOUR DRINK CREW

THE JOURNEY I am going to describe the journey that Drop Your Drink is on and give you some bits of advice that I learnt along the way. Sometime during my third year in my mechanical engineering degree I had reached a bit of a stand-still. I didn’t like my degree but couldn’t see myself doing anything else. I even went as far as to check in with career guidance. The lady there told me to remember things what I loved at the time I had started my degree. There was one thing that stood out for me; writing. Through my writing I started a blog called ‘Erase Nothing’ and it’s still on the internet somewhere. I wrote about nothing and everything: recipes, random bits of advice, saving the environment and my love for the growing electronic music scene in Pretoria. After about a month of this I realised that the content combination on the blog didn’t make sense and this cluster of crazy information is now the content of Drop Your Drink.

EVOLUTION OF DYD Drop Your Drink took the party out of Erase Nothing and made it a more serious blog in December 2011. In Drop Your Drink we found a niche.

W

e cover the alternative music scenes in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town and New York with event and concert photography. We like art and fashion too. The team is made up of 10 writers and photographers in those cities. We have a growing readership and social media following and we’ve got many exciting plans ahead. It took a lot of time, discussions in a Facebook group and effort from an incredible team to make Drop Your Drink happen. If I’ve learnt anything on this journey, it’s that if you want to go fast you’ll go alone but if you want to go far you’ll go in a team. Trust your intuition when selecting a team to work with you on your idea because it’s always right. We’ve made a culture out of being a family and being true to ourselves. I want to go into some of the strengths of Drop Your Drink. We do social media really well. You know that they say that you become an expert at something when you have practised it for 10000 hours? A few members of the team have more than 10000 hours of social media time behind them. This has allowed us to create a big social media presence for such a young blog. We like original content. This is where that whole honesty thing comes in. We don’t hide the truth in our pieces but at the same time we don’t go out of our way to be nasty. Our readers really appreciate this.

One of the biggest sacrifices for growth in any field is time and hard work. How much time and hard work are you willing to put into making your ideas come to light? I can tell you that when it’s 3am, you’re writing an exam in 5 hours and you’re busy drafting interview questions for some local act that you don’t know then you have to consider that cost. You also have to make sure that you have a solid foundation that can remind you why you started your project in the first place. I’ve watched many good ideas fail because of this. People just gave up and the dream dies with them. We keep persevering as a blog and it’s allowed us to keep gaining traction and become better at what we do.

Drop Your Drink is moving into a new phase. We have a new editor, Deji Dada, and I’m stepping back into strategic planning role. With the team we’re changing our focus to Africa, rebranding and crafting our social impact. We believe that you can have fun and do good things. It’s a bit of a weird combination but we’re trying to make things like recycling and climate change as cool as watching Crystal Fighters live. We want to become an active part in changing the social narrative in South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria. You’ll be able to witness the changes in the next few months. Look out for the new website and join us on our new journey.®®

To be excited about living and to chase a dream is every young man and women’s dream. It started out as a faint and in the air discussion between two young men who come from completely different backgrounds, doing what they need to do to get food on the table and money in their pockets to get by. Hailing from the friendly city of Port Elizabeth Jason Syce and Andre Kohler had come up with an idea not only to change a perspective of an industry but to also chase a dream that could possibly change their lives and change the way the people of this world see South Africa. Jason (25) being a man of many talents has excelled mostly in the sporting industry. Having obtained his diploma in sports management, he thought the world was his oyster in the sport regime. But little did he know…. As a very competitive young man, always striving to create and progress in life. His goal has always been on one path and he has never been derailed from that vision “SUCCESS”, may it be on the sports field, his business journey or his person life. Jason will not strive for anything less than a masterpiece. His drive, ambition and ridicules work ethic shines through not only in a physical light but in his spirituality too. This is a leader that lives by kingdom values, that right there is what we as human beings call the X factor. When Jason and I decided to take on this venture, I immediately knew I had partnered up with a gold mine busting at the seams, in this case the precious metal being his marketing genius.

“ No matter which avenue I venture into I will be successful “ JASON SYCE

EDITÉUR PLUS / ISSUE ONE

Now partner up that marketing prowess with a burning passion that knows nothing else than success, now to add to that pot this is a man that has represented South African hockey at a junior level so being on top is what his lives for. Jason has held a few different jobs, but he is what I call “a jack of all trades and a master of many”, in his own words “No matter which avenue I venture into I will be successful” with much humbleness in his voice this had immediately allowed me to see that this was from a place of true confidence. The lucky ones that know him, would have met the other half of him. The MC “Syce, Jason Syce”, he has a voice that calms and connects people.

16 EDITÉUR PLUS

Im not talking about an MC that makes jokes and reads through a program here. He has a way of projecting the event on hand in a way the organisers didn’t even know could be possible. Nothing is too big or too small, he will make you feel like you were just at the Oscars or Milan fashion week. Rather than just being a master of ceremonies and presenting an event to you. He takes you on a tour into the directive and vision of the purpose on a comfortable level that your best friend would. Jasons in a nutshell “Your biggest challenges are Rudimental”. Andre (29) has always had a keen eye for fashion, he had completed two years in his studies and due to an incident he could not complete his diploma. He has never been one to settle in one place and before the age of 16 he has travelled to a few

“ THERE IS NO BOX “ ANDRE KOHLER

countries on his own. These include Germany, France, Bulgaria, England and many more thereafter. He projects a lifestyle of one that is driven, ambitious and passionate. By exploring into different countries he has set a new level for the bar he wants to set in his mind. Andre in one word could be best described as “complete”, this would be in context of that he has achieved more in his life than many has ever thought about doing. Besides the travelling and besides the fashion industry, he has a relentless drive to create the box rather than to think outside of it. When asked what his “box” was he would say “there is no box”. His limitless lifestyle shows that no matter what he does or what is done for him he usually poses one question “is it my best”.

17 EDITÉUR PLUS

Andre comes from a very diverse family and the history behind it is a story on its own but this has taught him to never judge but always ask. His desire to learn and inspire is what has drawn many to him and this has made him a pioneer in his future ventures. He’s no stranger to camera and cat walk. Taking part in many a fashion shows and photoshoots for different clothing labels, Andre has now settled to take his creative genius and turn it into an assailing expedition. Now for the reason behind why the two had partnered up. This is making waves locally in their city but they don’t want to stop right there. The explosive duo have started a label Known as EGRESS. A simple name but with so many relatable aspects to every

individual who buys into the lifestyle rather than the clothing. Egress had come from a simple question from Andre to Jason “Why do you want to do this?” Jason replied “I want a way a way out” and EGRESS was birthed. By definition Egress means “exitway out/ the action of going out of or leaving a place”. This concept has been a driving force for the 2 on a daily basis, chasing their way out and using each other as an inspiration to feed from. Egress is a label for casual, formal and semi-formal clothing, custom designs and tailor fitted to you and only you as an individual. The launch of their first line is known as “ INSURGENTUM”, meaning a liberal power and overtaking of revival of a revolutionary movement. This has been their niche for the concept EGRESS, wanting to introduce the label in such a fashion to cause an indifference from society’s commercial thinking. The vision Who are you? We are born, we grow, we endure education, we get a job and we work, all for the nature of society’s way of doing things. Egress is far more than just a fashion house or business. We want to establish a bigger purpose and move beyond being labelled. Egress is a way out, a full expression about chasing your dreams and living the life you choose to live. Not what the worlds order dictates to you.We are a brand of lifestyle that knows no boundaries. We want to motivate and inspire people across this beautiful nation and ensure we strive to live our true way out. By doing so we express the true extension of who we are as people and that we are limitless. This is never going to be based on circumstances or people’s opinions, rather because we want to do it. Why not look good doing it. Believe in the lifestyle and become it...wear it! Now…Who are you?

SALOMI PRINSLOO Artist And Art Educator

20 EDITÉUR PLUS

Salomi Prinsloo is an artist working and living in Pretoria South Africa who regards art as living and living according to her, necessitates and awakens art making. It is her firm belief that art heals or has the potential to bring about some form of healing. This concept that art heals, beautifies and enriches lives has kept her productive for more than 35 years. She regularly explores this wonder world in her painting process which she calls her secret garden, a place of spirituality and retreat. The creative process is her way of celebrating the beauty of being alive and it allows her an opportunity to be energized by natural and artistic beauty. For her, the act of painting is a form of artistic breathing, because she takes and she gives. During the painting process she takes from the magical moments of artistic expression and spontaneity to feed her soul, and then she gives the outcome of the process and shares artistic beauty, as a catalyst for change, healing, growth and joy. Everyday scenes and objects are changed into something the viewer has never experienced before: a world of wonder and awe. Salomi’s work captures transformed reflections of her surroundings, the world she lives in, founded in internal and external awareness. Her work becomes a visual voice luring the viewer into a wonder world of colour, shape, texture and design. She brings emotions and thoughts into the visible world on the picture plane where they become a display for contemplation and healing. Her purpose is to create art which can communicate powerfully emotionally and she aims to trigger an array of feelings by employing formal technical qualities and combining them skilfully with the complexities of her chosen themes. She wants to create, and focus on artistic beauty, thus allowing perceived artistic beauty to exist as a form of knowledge and restoration. Her work refers to things that already exist but

she seeks to portray it in a beautified and transformed manner, to allow the viewer to see the ordinary in a brand new light. Salomi was born in Standerton and raised on a farm in the Orange Free State called Daeraad, and obtained the BA (Fine Arts) degree at the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Pretoria. She has conducted various workshops in South Africa and abroad and established the Salomi Prinsloo Visual Art Centre in Pretoria, where she presents art courses to adults. She exhibits regularly nationally and abroad. Her painting “Butchered Rainbow” was exhibited in the Florence Biennale in 2009. Being raised on a farm had a profound influence on her connection and respect for nature as it shaped her value system to a great extent and it still echoes in her art making currently. She believes this pastoral connection is pulsating passionately through her works and should not be seen as a static reality. Her work is not so much concerned with the external features but is rather infused with hidden meanings and impulses.

r Pieter Pienaar describes Salomi’s artistic development over the last decade as follows:

“From the heat of the blazing sun into the whispers of the cool morning light” is how I would summarize the change I can detect in Salomi’s work over the course of a decade. The bright ochre oranges and strong purples, applied with forceful large brushstrokes, defining dominant large masculine “earthbound shapes”, were gradually replaced by a rainbow of colours applied with lighter and smaller featherly strokes, mystically “caressing” the more floral and feminine shapes on the canvas. The latter works in her repertoire reveal a splendid range of subtleties with regards to texture and shade. Nuances of an ethereal nature became more prominent as the new body of work gained thematic strength. The issues she addresses point to the realm of human responsibility and she awakens a social consciousness beautifully with her mature skill.” Salomi’s mission as an artist is to evoke awe, associated with curiosity and a desire to explore the picture plane through extreme skilful use of her media, embedded in complexities pertaining to her art process and themes. Her purpose is to unashamedly beautify, enrich and colour her viewer’s perception with joy and a sense of rich experience. Her chosen focus for her future works is to “rainbow” the colours of her works even more, deliberately endeavouring to transform her viewers’ perceptions even more in an amicable way, in order to facilitate greater change. She will continue to enrich the lives of others through her teaching and workshops and she plans to launch a distance learning drawing course soon, which will enable anyone desiring to ma ster the skill of drawing, to do so conveniently at home.
