The work consists of five songs to be performed attacca.
Accents og sfz
> = subtle accent
> sƒz = clear accent
>> sƒƒz = powerful accent
>>> sƒƒƒz = extreme accent (only occurs once)
Accents on notes with a tie or a slur from the previous note, should be sung with stomach pressure.
Trills
Trills are notated ”tr”. The note to trill to is marked in parenthesis. The trill applies to entire duration of the note.
Piano notation
Sustain pedal: Change pedals only where specifically notated.
Damper pedal: Each song is marked either UNA CORDA SEMPRE or TUTTE LE CORDE SEMPRE, which applies to the whole song.
Split stems are used only to make room for all the notes in a chord. The notes should be played simultaniously.
The singing voice
The amount of vibrato should depend how much the sound of the piano reverberates.
The more the piano reverberates, the more vibrato should be used.
Parts of songs III and IV are to be sung falsetto. Those parts are notated in the treble clef.

>> sƒƒz = voldsom betoning
>>> sƒƒƒz = ekstrem betoning (forekommer kun en gang)
Accenter på toner, der er bundet over fra den forrige tone, skal synges som et mavetryk.
Triller
Triller er noteret med ”tr”. Der står i parentes, hvilken tone man skal trille til. Trillen gælder hele den node, den står over.
Notation i klaveret
Sustainpedal: Der skal kun skiftes pedal, hvor det specifikt er noteret.
Dæmperpedal: I begyndelsen af hver sang er noteret med hhv. UNA CORDA SEMPRE og TUTTE LE CORDE SEMPRE om dæmperpedalen skal bruges; og det gælder for hele den pågældende sang.
Delte nodehalse er udelukkende for at få plads til alle noder i en akkord. Tonerne skal spilles samtidig.
Sangstemmen
Syng med vibrato gradueret efter, hvor meget klaveret runger. Jo mere klaveret runger, des større vibrato.
I sang nr. III og IV går stemmen op i falsetlejet. Falset er noteret i g-nøglen.
