Air and key sound. No pitch. Blow through the instrument while making noice sounds with the keys in a continuous tempo.

Air sound with a “glissando” between the two notes. Should anyway result in a sudden change in the dynamics at the last note.

Luftlyd med en dynamisk subito-effekt til slut. Kan i mange tilfælde skabes naturligt ved dette glissando.

Only for the flute! Close your lips around the mouth-piece and blow fast through the instrument. This creates a windy like glissando. The angle to the enbrouchure-hole can change the sound a lot. How ever the result should in this case be as aggressive as possible resulting in a natural crescendo towards the upper note.

Gælder kun fløjten! Dæk mundstykket med læberne og blæs gennem instrumentet. Dette skal resultere i et luftigt glissando med et naturligt medfølgende crescendo. Vinklen til hullet kan i denne sammenhæng være af afgørende betydning for den endelige lyds karakter. Det foretrækkes at lyden får så meget tilføjet energi og retning frem for reel tonehøjde. Kan anses som en slags percussiv effekt.

Tongue-ram or pizzicato effect is a percussive or pizzicato like sound with a clear attack and some how well defined pitch. It is produced by completely covering the embouchure hole with the mouth and forcibly sealing it with the tongue. The result is a pitch sounding a major seventh lower than the fingered note. The upper note indicates the fingering and the lower the actual pitch. The preferable sound for this piece is to achieve a clear attack rather than a perfect pitch!

Tongue-ram eller pizzicato-effekt. Lyder som en slagtøjseffekt eller et slags pizzicato. Effekten kan skabes på flere måder. En måde er at dække læbepladen med læberne og ”slå” tungen mod hullet. Den komprimerede luftstrøm skaber en kort dump luftlyd med en tonehøjde, der klinger en stor septim under det anvendte greb. Øverste tone indikerer derfor grebet og underste tonen. Effekten og dermed luftstrømmen kan skabes på flere måder. Den optimale lyd for dette stykke er at skabe så meget attack på lyden som muligt!


Flutter-tongue is a tremolo effect rolling the tongue while playing the indicated note. If the dynamic is extremely low (ppp) the result should be a more noisy sound. (Air + pitch + flutter)

Flattertunge er et slags tremolo skabt ved at lade tungen rulle mens man spiller. Ved meget svage dynamikker (ppp) er lyden mest støjpræget eller snurrende.

Lontano indicates that the tone sounds distant and vague.

Lontano betyder at det skal lyde som om tonen kommer langt væk fra.

Only for the clarinet! Lay your tongue against a lot of the reed. Gently push upward so that the tip and rail of the reed is closed. Get rid of as much air in the oral cavity as you can and seal off the lip so that you have an airtight fit. The tongue is quickly released in a downward motion. When you release the tongue downward, you also drop your jaw and open your mouth in a “popping” motion.

Gælder kun klarinetten! Dæk så meget af mundstykket med tungespidsen og skab et undertryk i munden ved at frigive luft fra mundhulen. Slip tungen hurtigt i en nedadgående bevægelse samtidig med at du åbner munden lidt (taber kæben). Dette skulle resultere i en perkussiv poppende lyd.

Gælder kun klarinetten!

Play a multiphonic glissando from the indicated fundamental. In this case the low e. The sound shouldn’t be too rough.

Udfør et multifonglissando ud fra den angivne grundtone. I dette tilfælde lille e. Glissandoet gælder altså den høje tone i multifonen. Klangen skulle helst ikke være for grov.

Air sound. Create a fuzzy unstable tone. Partly air partly tone. Unclear pitch. In this case with a small flutter effect if possible.

Dette er delvis en luftlyd og delsvis en svag tone. Stabil og “gennemsigtig” i dens karakter. I dette tilfælde med flattertunge. Giver en dyb knurrende lyd.


Explanations for the piano

Forklaringsliste til klaveret

Use a sponge from the kitchen or something like that with a fairly rough surface. Scratch on the deepest string inside the piano.

Anvend en skurresvamp fra køkkenet eller lignende til at skrubbe på den dybeste streng.

Press down the keys silently while you have pressed down the sustain pedal. When you slip the pedal it should activate the strings and make them ring.

Hold tonerne nede stumt, mens du også holder pedalen nede. Slip pedalen pludseligt så det aktiverer strengene. Resultatet er at strengene klinger dog meget svagt og at, der kommer et klart attak fra pedalen.

The sound of the notes is very weak and distant and the sound of the pedal is like a percussive effect.

Use a plastic card like a credit card to slide on the keys. In this case only the black keys. The difference between the sound of the black and white keys is huge. The black keys are more like a guiro and they make more noise. The white keys are less noisy (dull). Therefor it takes more energy from player to create an audible guiro like sound.

Anvend at plastikkort så som et kreditkort til at spille et glissando på tangenterne. I dette tilfælde er det kun på de sorte tangenter. Den lydlige forskel mellem de sorte og hvide tangenter er ret stor. Det er lettere at opnå en grov støjende guiro-agtig lyd på de sorte, mens det kræver mere kraft for at frembringe en hørbar lyd på de hvide.

Cluster sound played very gently with the palm of the hand.

Kluster skabt med håndfladen. Gerne med en blanding af sorte og hvide tangenter. Lyden er ret blød.

Cluster sound played with the fist. Hit the keys as hard as possible as high on the piano as possible. Only on the white keys (to avoid any damage of the hand). Also used on the deepest keys.

Lav et kluster ved at slå med knyttet hånd så højt på tangenterne som muligt, så hårdt som muligt. Ram kun de hvide tangenter for ikke at skade hånden. Det samme er gældende på de dybeste tangenter.


Cluster sound played with the fist of the left hand and then quickly followed by a glissando by the right hand. The beginning point of the glissando should be as close to the cluster as possible.

Lav et kluster ved at slå med venstre hånd knyttet hånd dybt som muligt efterfulgt af et glissando med højre hånd. Dette glissandos begyndelsespunkt skulle gerne være så tæt på klusteret som muligt.

Scrape two pieces of styrofoam against each other in the indicated rythm.

Skrab to stykker flamingo mod hinanden i den noterede rytmiske figur.

Create a tremolo with the sandpaper (also used for the styrofoam).

Lav en tremoloeffekt med sandpapiret. Notationen gælder også for flamingo.

The notation is used for metal instruments such as the bike wheel, cowbell and cymbal. It indicates that the result of the sound should be a screaming-like / distorted sound that clealy involves multiple pithes. This is achieved by a hard pressure either by the bow or a stick against the metal surface.

Denne notation anvendes til metal instrumenterne så som cykelhjul, koklokke og bækkener. Den betyder at man skal frembringe en lidt rusten halvskrigende lyd med tydelige og flere samklingende overtoner. Dette opnås ved at man stryger eller skraber hårdt mod instrumentets overflade.

For the cowbell: Play on the bell (bottom of the instrument). Choose a suitable size of instrument where this effect works on.

På koklokken spilles der på mundingen (den underste del) af instrumentet. Vælg koklokkens størrelse efter denne effekts virkning.

This is the key-signal for the bike wheel. It’s a drawing of the bike wheel with the hub as the top circle, the spokes as the two crossing lines and the rim as the half circle at the buttom. The notes are therefor placed at the actual point of playing. If the note is placed on the upper staff line of the system, the point of the bow should be just at the crosspoint of the spokes. In general the pitches are high behind and near the crosspoint as well as near the rim. At the very middle of the spokes the tone is more like a rusty old pond.

Dette er “nøglen” til cykelhjulet. Det er en grafisk afbildning af hjulet med narvet øverst, egerne er de to krydsende streger og fælgen den underste halvcirkel. Dermed er tonernes placering i systemet lig med hvor på hjulet man skal spille. Generelt er tonerne høje bagved og tæt på egernes krydsfelt samt tæt på fælgen. I mellem krydsfeltet og fælgen har tonerne mere karakter af en gammel rusten havelåge.

Sul pont / Al pont

Means not, as in conventional classical interpretation, near the bridge but actually on the bridge. To avoid any misunderstanding the term “on the bridge” is used instead and “al pont” when the bowing is near the bridge.

Denne betegnelse betyder ikke som i klassisk musik tæt på broen men rent faktisk på stolen. Derfor anvendes den engelske term i stedet for når der skal spilles på stolen mens tæt på stolen er udtrykt ved “al pont”.

Are the indications for the specific strings.

Er betegnelserne for de enkelte strenge.

Total dampening. Dampen the strings with the left hand near the playing point.

Fuld dæmpning. Dæmp de angivne strenge så der ikke klinger nogen specifik tone ved at dæmpe tæt på spillepunktet.

Bow pressure. Produces a scratch tone but with a more screaming character.

Buepres. Giver en skrabe eller skrigeagtig tone.

Maximum bow pressure. Produces a noisy scratch / scraping sound with a very reduced overtone spectre.

Det kraftigst mulige buepres. Skaber en meget mørk og overtonefattig støjlyd.

Is a graphical key representing a string instrument. On top is the tail piece (the small rectangle), below that is the bridge (the small horisontal line), under that again is the fingerboard (large rectangle) starting from the top line of the system.

Er en grafisk nøgle der viser et strygeinstrument. Øverst er strengeholderen (lille firkant), under er stolen (den lille vandrette linje) og under den er gribebrættet (stor firkant) som begynder på øverste linje af systemet.

The notes are therefore also marking the point of playing.

Nodernes placering fortæller dermed hvor på instrumentet der skal spilles.

Play on the tail piece with the bow (not on any string). The result is a fuzzy tone.

Stryg på strengeholderen (ikke på strengene). Dette resulterer i en uklar tone.

Play a battuto (on 2. and 3. string) approximately at the normal bowing point while you dampen the two strings. Gives a more percussive sound.

Spil et battuto (2. og 3. streng) cirka på det normale punkt mellem stol og gribebræt samtidig med at hånden dæmper de to strenge. Giver en percussiv lyd.


Move the bow “vertically” between the two positions on the two dampened middle strings. Gives a scraping white noise like sound.

Bevæg buen “vertikalt” mellem de to angivne positioner og dæmp strengene. Dette resulterer i en skrabe lyd som har lidt karakter af hvid støj.

Same type of tecnique but now with more bow pressure. This should result in a scratchy or creaking sound. Use the hair near the frog of the bow (down bow).

Samme slags teknik bare med mere buepres. Dette giver en grov skrabende eller knirkende lyd. Det anbefales at anvende buen ved frocheenden (nedstrøg).

Play with as much bow pressure as possible between the bridge and the tail piece. In this case on the first string. Results in an aggressive quasi screaming like sound.

Spil med så meget buepres som muligt. I dette tilfælde på et punkt mellem strengeholderen og stolen på første streng. Giver en lettere skrigende/skrabende lyd.

Play / knock with the wood side of the bow on bridge.

Spil / “slå” med bagsiden af buen på stolen.

Bow with the hair on the bridge. It is preferable if the strings are avoided (therefor make sure you damp the strings). This makes an air like sound.

Spil med buen på stolen. Det skal så videst muligt undgås at strengene klinger med. Derfor bør de dæmpes med hånden. Dette resulterer i en luftagtig lyd.

Play a very fragile crescendo on the first string between the bridge and the tail piece ending with a small but sudden gesture. Sounds a little bit like the tone has been interrupted.

Spil et meget porøst og svagt crescendo på den første streng mellem strengeholder og stol. Dette ender med en lille kort gestik der får det til at lyde som om tonen pludselig e blevet afbrudt.

Bow at the side og the instrument. Results in a air-like sound.

Stryg på siden af instrumentet i den udskårede runding ved f-hullet. Giver en luftig støjlyd.

Is a classic Bartok pizzicato. Exaggerated pizz, where the string hits the finger board and gives a percussive sound. In this case followed by a quick dampening of the string.

Er betegnelsen for et klassisk Bartok pizzicato. Dette er skabt ved at man hiver i strengen så den rammer gribebrættet og giver en smækkende slagtøjsagtig støjlyd. I dette tilfælde er strengen, hurtigt efter smækket, dæmpet så den ikke klinger.


Play an extremely soft and fragile glissando. As less focused on the pitch as possible (more noisy).

Spil et ekstremt svagt og skrøbeligt glissando med så lidt fokus på tonens kvalitet som muligt (støjpræget).

Play a “jumping-bow” with the wood side of the bow. Results in a more dry and wood-like sound.

Anvend bagsiden af buen og spil et spiccato. Giver en mere tør og træagtig lyd.

Play a glissando on the indicated harmonics. Makes a transparent sound of harmonics in this case from the e5 (1st string).

Spil et glissando mellem de noterede flageoletter med samme lette fingertryk. Giver en gennemsigtig overtone klang ud fra grundtonen e2 (1. streng).

Play a fast vertical movement on the strings with the bow. Now indicated rythm. The sound should gradually change from white noise-like sound to become more rough and creaky.

Bevæg buen “vertikalt” mellem de to angivne positioner så hurtigt som muligt og dæmp samtidig strengene. Lyden skulle gerne gradvist ændre sig fra hvid støj til en mere skrabeagtig lyd.

Play an extremely fast and tight tremolo. The sound is more noisy or buzzing.

Lav et meget hurtigt og tæt tremolo. Resultatet skulle gerne være mere støjende eller summende end klassiske tremolo-effekter.
