Letter Editor A
from the
Scoop of the century (not)
While I was driving one day recently I couldn’t help but notice a sizable gathering of people, (not exactly a crowd) standing under the railway bridge. Now I am quite a curious person by nature and I could not help but wonder what they were waiting for. I imagined they had inside information or knowledge of someone important visiting the area and I was disgusted with myself for not knowing. Perhaps some event had escaped my diary and our competition publications were stealing a march on us? Was it a famous celebrity promoting something special, an important politician opening a new facility or maybe a member of the Royal family bestowing an honour on someone who had done something worthy?
December 2014 Issue 14
Why were they standing beside the road? Was it possibly a demonstration passing by; a TV personality doing a bed-push; or even a Tour-de-Staffordshire type road race? Any minute now hundreds of gleaming cycles with brightly coloured riders were sure to come into view accompanied by an entourage of leader cars and television cameras. I was racking my brains to think of what could attract people to stand and wait. I could not control my curiosity any longer so I pulled my car over and grabbed my camera from the glove compartment. I spilled out onto the pavement and ran (walked fast, I don’t do running) the hundred yards or so back and then under the railway bridge. My heart was pounding and I must admit to a combination of being a little frightened and excited at what I might learn from the people standing in the half-light. As I approached I noticed the assembled throng were all ages which gave me no idea as to what they might all have in common – what could it be? On reaching the first of the people under the bridge I grabbed an old couple by the arm. “What are you all waiting for?” I screamed (as the traffic sounded deafening under there). The old lady cupped her hand to her ear “What’s that son?” I was nearly suicidal at this point and I bellowed “WHAT ARE YOU ALL WAITING FOR?” Which at a rare moment of quiet echoed around every girder and pillar of the aging structure sending pigeons flying. Everyone turned and stared with mouths open. “We’re waiting for it to stop raining mate!” her husband replied. Not the scoop I was hoping for. Yours truly, Paul Oakley

With the dark mornings and the nights drawing in, now really is the time to think about children’s safety. It’s great that we’re able to help young children be seen on the streets when walking to and from school. We hope that it will give parents and teachers peace of mind.” Specsavers is a co-sponsor of Road Safety Week (17-23 November). "Hidden Hearing is a company with decades of expertise"
Dr. Hilary Jones has been a trusted medical advisor to Hidden Hearing since 2012 and is a strong advocate of getting hearing checked in order to improve quality of life. Hidden Hearing has 80 plus practices across the UK.
A
s a GP, Dr Hilary knows how hearing loss can affect daily life, sometimes leading to inconvenience, social stigma, depression, paranoia and isolation: "I jumped at the chance of becoming Medical Advisor to Hidden Hearing for several reasons. As a GP I am all too aware of how common hearing loss is across all age groups and reminded on a daily basis of the inconvenience, social stigma, depression paranoia and isolation it can often cause. With 10 million people in the UK currently experiencing hearing loss and as many as 4 million of them still un-diagnosed and reluctant to seek help, it is a hugely neglected condition crying out for attention. Yet they are suffering not so much in silence as in muffled confusion. It no longer needs to be like that. Early detection with single, quick diagnostic testing and huge advances in sophisticated,

Why do people choose Hidden Hearing? • State-of-the-art facilities
• Full range of hearing aid accessories available – including landline & mobile phones, batteries and more
almost invisible modern hearing aid technology means that remedies for all severities of hearing loss are readily available, cosmetically acceptable and perhaps most importantly of all, dramatically effective. Meals on Wheels Feeding the Doggies & Moggies of Burntwood
elivering direct to over 300 customers in the Lichfield & Burntwood area Nutritional Advisor Jane Adams from Lichfield has just celebrated her 3rd birthday as owner of the Lichfield franchise of OSCAR Pet Foods. Jane is regularly seen at local shows including this year’s successful Paws in The Park event at The Lichfield Bower; which saw hundreds of dogs taking part in the ‘Scruffs’ dog show and Agility demonstrations. As an independent family business established in 1990 Oscar Pet Food is the UK market leader in pet food home delivery with a reliable reputation for quality and service. OSCAR pet foods are competitively priced, highly nutritious and tasty, and made from the finest human grade wholesome ingredients which are traceable and, for the most part, locally sourced. Made in Britain its 100% honest label policy provides, at a glance, the exact ingredients, giving customers confidence and reassurance in knowing that they are feeding their pets a healthy and balanced diet. Quality and nutritional content is the priority and advice is available from a team of 90 nationwide Nutritional Advisors. Aside from the high quality pet food it’s the convenience for most people that really make the home delivery service stand out. Jane explains: “Once you've started feeding OSCAR we make sure that you never need to think about pet food again. I keep in touch with my customers and arrange timely free of charge deliveries at their convenience. We keep our products away from shops and supermarkets which means we can stay competitive and offer a better service by delivering straight to their door. There’s no need to be home - we’ll leave it in a safe place and some of my customers have it delivered to their place of work. No more struggling with large bags of dog food or running out & having to do a quick dash to the pet shop late at night! We take care of everything and get to know our customers and their pets. Sometimes I meet new customers with specific health requirements eg if a dog is overweight I take my scales to the customer and weigh it periodically, along with the right food and portion size we can get the dog back to the correct weight. I also see many dogs with itchy skin problems and this can be helped by a change in diet or a natural supplement.” During the summer months Jane has been working with the fundraising team of the Border Collie Trust GB Rescue centre at Colton, Rugeley.Together they have sold the OSCAR Cat & Dog Food £5 Trial Packs to new customers and all proceeds have been donated to the charity: “The volunteer team do many events & work tirelessly at weekends and during holidays to highlight the plight of some of the collies. The conditions that they find when they rescue collies of all ages including pregnant bitches and very young puppies can be very distressing. They really need the money they raise from the general public to keep the kennels at Colton running. As a local dog rescue centre it’s been a pleasure to support the team at some of the shows we’ve attended this year and to donate the money from our great value Trial Packs, which at the same time gives pet owners the chance to try our food and give to a local dog charity. We’re all winners.” The work of The Border Collie Trust GB charity Rescue centre is being featured on BBC1 Countryfile Sunday 23rd November 2014. If you would like to buy an OSCAR Trial Pack for your cat or dog contact Jane Adams on Lichfield 01543 302130 / 07930987166 or visit www.oscars.co.uk All proceeds from the sale go to the Border Collie Trust GB.
Do you need a free flu jab?
R
esidents living in Cannock Chase District are being advised to have the seasonal flu vaccination as part of Public Health England’s ‘Flu Kills’ campaign. Flu occurs every year, and is a highly infectious disease with symptoms that come on very quickly. The most common symptoms of flu are fever, chills, headache, aches and pains in the joints and muscles, and extreme tiredness. It's important that people who are at increased risk from flu have their flu vaccination every year. This includes the elderly, the very young and people with underlying medical conditions. The flu vaccination cannot give a person the flu. It is impossible to get flu from having the flu jab because the vaccine does not contain live viruses. A very small number of people experience side effects such as aching muscles, but this is simply their immune system responding to the vaccine. These mild symptoms are not to be confused with the actual flu virus where symptoms include a high temperature, excessive tiredness and aching muscles. The flu jab is free for people who meet a number of criteria including those who are 65 years of age or over, or are pregnant, have asthma or lung disease, have chronic heart disease, are diabetic, have a chronic kidney condition, have a chronic liver condition, have had a stroke, have an illness or are taking medicines that lower your natural defences, are living in a long-stay residential care home or other long-stay care facility, receive a carer's allowance, or are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill or are a healthcare worker with direct patient contact or a social care worker. For more information about the flu vaccination, visitwww.nhs.uk/livewell/winterhealth

Janos Toth to stand as Cannock Chase Parliamentary Candidate
L
ong standing Councillor Janos Toth is not to re-stand for Cannock Chase Council in order to concentrate on winning the Cannock Chase Parliamentary seat back for Labour. Janos has been a Councillor representing people across Cannock Chase since 1992. He has served on Cannock Chase District Council (from 1992 to 2008 and from 2011 to the present day), Staffordshire County Council (from 1993 to 2001 and from 2003 to 2009), Stoke-on-Trent & Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Authority (from 2005 to 2009) and Staffordshire Police Authority (from 1993 to 1994/5), plus the Parish Councils of Bridgtown, Heath Hayes and Wimblebury and Norton Canes. The constituency is a major target for the Labour Party. Janos Toth commented: “I have represented people across Cannock Chase for 23 years as a Councillor. I won’t be re-standing for Cannock Chase Council next year as the fight is on for the MP race and I want to make sure that we beat the Tories and ensure a Labour victory. If elected I would be a full time MP serving residents across Cannock Chase.” “My top priority is supporting the NHS which is under a massive attack from this Tory-led government. The A&E hours at Stafford Hospital and the hours at Cannock minor injuries unit have both been slashed. People in Cannock Chase are being short changed by not having the same money spent on NHS services. I pledge to fight for residents in our constituency to get the best NHS services. I have lived here for over 25 years, that is why local services and getting the best deal for local people is so important to me." Janos Toth, Labour's Parliamentary Candidate for Cannock Chase can be contacted on 01543 279654 or on 07944 726877. Page 16 www.chasegazette.co.uk

James and Jake pass national tests
James Rudman and Labrador Jake Environmental Health Officer James Rudman, from Great Haywood, has raised two-year-old Jake (bred from a working line of Field Trail Champions) since he was a puppy. Jake is training to become an airscenting search dog. He will detect the strongest human scent in the air and track it and will then indicate a 'find' by barking to alert the handler and medical team to the casualty. Rescue dogs can search fifty acres of woodland, farmland and heathland in ninety minutes. James and Jake have undergone a demanding training programme to be registered with the National Search and Rescue Dog Association (NSARDA). They have passed obedience tests to demonstrate control off lead, emergency stop at a distance, speak and recall commands and sheep stock tests to prove that the dog can work undistracted off the lead around livestock. Why do people go missing? Many have experienced the breakdown of a relationship, financial difficulties or homelessness. Deteriorating mental health is also a common cause of missing person cases attended by the rescue team. The skilled searchers are commonly called upon to locate adults experiencing dementia-related conditions, which can lead to wandering behaviour and the associated risk of harm while missing. James commented: “It is going to be a demanding journey but once Jake is qualified we will work closely with the police to help find missing children and adults in the local area. We will search for lost loved ones who may be injured and require life-saving skills and medical attention quickly.” Jake will be joining an established search dog section at the rescue team, including Staffordshire first graded handler Dave Barely and border collie ‘Red’. Handler Rob Messenger and border collie ‘Penny’ are also in training. To find out more about the rescue team or to donate please visit www.ssart.org

Rugeley Reindeer in Get Santa!
Reindeer from Blithbury Reindeer Lodge, Rugeley, are set to become stars of the big screen this Christmas as they feature in a new British film, Get Santa. Seven reindeer worked on the film for several months earlier this year, where they were filmed shopping on Carnaby Street and walking through the centre of Harrogate in disguise. 7 year old ‘Combo’ has the lead reindeer role as ‘Dasher’ and was required to run across Millennium Bridge in London for one of the scenes. Get Santa’s cast includes Jim Broadbent as “Santa”, Rafe Spall, Warwick Davis, Jodie Whittaker, Ewen Bremner and newcomer Kit Connor. Stephen Swinnerton, Owner of Blithbury Reindeer Lodge, said: “Although our herd have worked on film and TV programmes previously, this is the first time our reindeer have been used as characters in a film. We all loved working on Get Santa which boasts an amazing cast and crew, and are thrilled that our reindeer were able to help bring this magical story to life.” Members of the public can visit Combo and his fellow film stars during December at Blithbury Reindeer Lodge, New House Farm, Uttoxeter Road, Blithbury, Rugeley, WS15 3HY. Pension auto-enrolment deadline looms for mid-size businesses
T
he deadline for the next stage of the government’s pension auto-enrolment means that contributory pensions for most employees are on their way. The new laws on workplace pensions that came into force on 30 June 2012 are gradually being rolled out, requiring employers to enrol eligible workers into a pension scheme and make a minimum pension contribution. Many larger employers who employ more than 250 people will already have been required to begin enrolling their employees. However, an increasing number of employees will be enrolled over the next 18 months; as employers with 50 to 249 employees will be required to enrol by April 2015 and those employing less than 50, between 1st June 2015 and 1st April 2017. Employers will be notified by their tax office of their “staging date” by which they are required to enrol their employees and eventually will be required to make a minimum employer contribution of up to three per cent of earnings. Most workers will be eligible to enrol provided they: • ordinarily work in the UK; • are aged between 16 and 75; and • work under a contract of employment or any other contract, whether or not there is a written contract. However, not all job holders will have to be auto-enrolled in a pension scheme. To be eligible for auto-enrolment, a job holder must be aged at least 22 but below state pension age. This is currently age 65 for men and age 60 for women, though it is being incrementally equalised between the sexes. The worker must also earn more than the earnings trigger in a relevant pay reference period (which is the same period used to assess qualifying earnings). The trigger has been set at £10,000 a year in the 2014/15 tax year. Earnings include bonuses, overtime and statutory maternity, paternity or adoption pay. Employers are required to provide specific information in writing to the employee, including their auto enrolment date, details of the scheme and the contributions required. Failure to follow the correct procedure or comply with the rules could see employers faced with enforcement action, notices and a penalty. Ansons’ employment law experts advise both employers and employees about their obligations under the pension auto enrolment scheme to ensure they comply with the new requirements. For further information on workplace pensions or any other employment law problem contact Martin de Ridder in the Ansons Solicitors’ employment law team, on 01543 431186 or email mderidder@ansonsllp.com. peace. This became famously known as the Christmas Truce, and it is still one of the most poignant episodes of WW1. On Christmas Eve, soldiers left their trenches and met in No-Man’s-Land, exchanging cigarettes, food and family photographs. Games of football were played and men settled down around camp fires to sing songs of home and wish each other a merry Christmas. On Saturday 13th December the Staffordshire Regiment Museum is inviting the public to ‘Carols in the Trenches’, a special re-enactment of that Truce, down in their remarkable and extensive WW1 trench system. From 7pm to 8.30pm, visitors will be invited to join museum volunteers in period uniform down in the trench, as they read extracts of soldier’s letters home to their families telling of Christmas at The Front. The choir will be leading the singing of festive carols, and the evening ends with German and British troops meeting in No Man’s Land to shake hands. Visitors are welcome to extend their stay by exploring the museum and its fascinating collections. Pre-booking is essential. As this is an outdoor event, please make sure that you are wearing appropriate clothing. The trench and museum is fully wheelchair accessible. Tickets for Carols in the Trenches are £4 for adults, children and concessions £3 or £9 for a family ticket (2 adults and up to 3 children). Tickets include entry to the main museum and all collections. Please pre-book your ticket by calling 01543 434394 or visiting the Staffordshire Regiment Museum, DSM Whittington, Whittington, Lichfield, WS14 9PY.
