Ready, Rocket, go!

Keywords:

Adventure, imagination, read the pictures

About the book

This is a book that uses childhood’s playful universe to tell a fun story, whose text, book design and illustrations provide the perfect mix of reality and fantasy. This is the story of little Iolanda who, in her backyard, with objects and furniture creates a universe of fantasy and imagination and experiences great adventures.

Ready, Rocket, Go! subtly plays with the idea of accumulation as depicted in Ana Matsusaki’s illustrations, which show how Iolanda piles up objects one on top of the other to give life to a rocket. The book’s special touch lies in the representation of reality X fantasy: reality is portrayed by “real images” and “children’s drawings” in the daily illustrations, while fantasy is shown in the night pictures.

Two Islands

Keywords:

Family, friendship, environment

About the book

João, a 10-year-old boy, lives on the volcanic Green Island. His parents (Sophia, a biologist, and Fernando, an aviator) and his friend Mr. Alberto, a 90-year-old gardener, encourage him to respect and to love nature, so much so that his best friend is the Green Volcano. One day, his father disappears while flying. João is shaken up inside, and a slight tremor announces that the volcano has woken up. What a mystery! In this book, the nuanced observation of João’s inner world is portrayed in harmony and contrast with the outside world. The poetic text is wonderfully rendered by Zansky’s illustrations, which are realistic and dreamlike at the same time, presenting the Green Island in all its splendor. Geography, geology, environment, self-knowledge, friendship and family — all these themes underline, in a symbolic and subtle way, the love and the power that exist within João. Two Islands was a finalist in 3 prestigious prizes for manuscripts in Brazil, and the author Guilherme Semionato has books published in 8 countries.

About the book

Daniel Munduruku compiles and retells ten tales about indigenous people who live in Brazil. The author invited people of different ethnicities to choose the stories and transcribe them as they were originally told. Some tribes chose tales of creation; others, fables; and others try to pass on their traditions. Each indigenous group is depicted with beautiful photos to bring a little of their culture to life. There are also landscapes that show the geographic diversity of the territory where the indigenous peoples live in Brazil. Romeo and Juliet: a Graphic Novel Adaptation

About the book

The famous love story between young people from rival families gets an exquisite comic books version. Ivan Jaf’s script preserves the essence of the original text and Shakespeare’s literary spirit — a mix of drama, comedy and social criticism — while Tainan Rocha’s illustrations add color, light and even more action to the narrative. Agile dialogues and illustrations that preserve the original characterization in the settings and characters, with a contemporary design, give robustness to the adaptation of this universal classic. One of the differentials of the book stands out: an afterword written by a renowned Shakespeare scholar in Brazil, who guides the young reader in diving into Romeo and Juliet

About the book

More than ever, environmental issues have taken over news headlines, conversation circles and classrooms. It is a reality that we must face, and we must think of behaviors that can revert the damage caused by human’s intervention on the environment. Mapinguari, which focuses on contemporary issues such as sustainable development and the preservation of the environment, gives young readers an opportunity to reflect upon this subject. This is a fiction story in the form of a comic book, in which the graphic design and illustrations interact with the text in a very creative way. The main character of the story is José, a young man who is faced with a dilemma when he finds out that his job threatens the community where he grew up. As he rediscovers his village, the main character discovers the history of his family and the many local values that are at risk-folklore, the rubber workers movement, indigenous culture, and the wealth of the forest.

The Odyssey: a Graphic Novel Adaptation

Keywords:

Adventure, history and miths

About the book

One of the greatest classics of humanity in comic strips. In this story, the hero is Odysseus, who lives a saga to go home after a long absence, while his son Telemachus tries to discover his father’s whereabouts. Besides this, Penelope, Odysseus’s wife, resists the onslaughts of pretenders to her hand and the throne. Homer’s oral poem is retold in its entirety, with an adaptation that preserves the essence of the original text and vibrant illustrations. Jefferson Costa signs the visual script for these comic strips. His illustrations are full of movement and have a very present light and shadow work. The composition of the pages offers a fluid and dynamic reading experience. The presence of simple and overlapping frames and images result in interactions, in a harmonious way, between scenarios and paintings.

About the book

First published in 1891, Philosopher or Dog? is the first adaptation to comic strips of the Machado de Assis novel “Quincas Borba”. The book recounts life in the Brazilian Court at the end of the XIX century, and the story revolves around a love and selfseeking triangle. Adapted by Luiz Antonio Aguiar, the text becomes tridimensional in settings and characters illustrated by Verônica Berta with different perspectives. Lines, colors, lights, and shadows give birth to a perfect and original version of this Brazilian literature classic.
