New Year, New Catalogue! Welcome to our 2019 Children and Young Adults’ catalogue. Besides the new releases, this catalogue has a new structure. The publications are now divided into two macro categories: Frontlist and Backlist. This change made it possible to present more and assorted titles.
In the Picturebooks list, we would like to draw your attention to “My Family Enauenê”, by Rita Carelli and Anabella López. It’s a book about the experience of a white little girl and her family among the Enauenê, an indigenous people that lives in the Amazon Forest. But it goes far beyond that: it puts the women’s empowerment issue in the spotlight. In the beginning of her new life, the white girl finds herself stuck: she wants to swim in the river and play football - activities reserved for the native boys -, but to do so she needs to be considered a boy. The plot humorous and sensitive approach contributes to the very contemporary gender discussion.
Still in the Picturebooks list, we want you to take a closer look to “The Boy with Short Trousers”, by Flavio de Souza, famous children and young adult author, prestigious theater director and screenwriter. This book shows the adventure of a boy who helps his great-grandfather unravel a family mystery: the reason why his grandfather has been holding a grudge against his father since childhood. It has something to do with the disappearance of an child’s slot car toy. A book about the the affections and sorrows that bring the different family generations together.
The highlight of the Young Adults list is “A Fiuh Chewdran’s Cumpazishions” [Few Children’s Compositions], by Millôr Fernandes, a very important name in Brazilian journalism and arts. Multi-talented, he wrote poetry, prose and plays, drew cartoons and translated a range of works from Shakespeare to Arthur Miller. This book features a collection of 52 short texts and illustrations that presents the world through a child’s point of view. Written with the spelling and the syntax of those who are still learning how to write, this fantastic experience will surprise and amuse readers of all ages.
And there is much more! This catalogue will give you access to numerous themes, genres, illustrations and renowned authors that will thrill you. Enjoy it!

Written by the acclaimed author Ana Maria Machado, this story is narrated by two characters, in alternate moments: Andreia and Rodrigo. The two share their discoveries about their own family, “very different people.” To them, everyone has a secret identity: Andreia’s grandmother is a princess; her grandfather, a pirate; her mother, a fairy; and her father can be either a genius or a giant. Andreia and Rodrigo show great familiarity with the universe of children’s literature, referring to Snow White, The Princess and the Pea, Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, and Peter Pan. GULLIVER’S TRAVELS Lemuel Gulliver is a surgeon who loves cruises. Over more than sixteen years, he has several adventures and five of his journeys are incredible: he explores an empire where people never grow to more than six inches tall; a kingdom where the smallest dwarf is nine meters tall; a flying island; an island of sorcerers; a country of civilized horses and wild hominids. In a story narrated in the first person, the main character, Gulliver, talks about his travels in which fantasy predominates, stimulating the reader’s reflection about our own behavior, values and attitudes, not always consistent. A masterpiece by one of the greatest writers of the English language. THE VOICES OF ANCESTORS Daniel Munduruku compiles and retells ten tales about indigenous people who live in Brazil. The author invited Indians of different ethnicities to choose the stories and transcribe them as they were originally told. Some tribes chose tales of creation; others, fables; and others try to pass on their traditions. Each indigenous group is depicted with beautiful photos to bring a little of their culture to life. There are also landscapes that show the geographic diversity of the territory where the indigenous peoples live in Brazil. Wilmar D’Angelis, an indigenous person, linguist and university teacher, pens the afterword. For him, “this book offers the readers a chance to be in touch with other ways of talking about the different realities of the world or teaching these differences to the younger generations.” Text: Daniel Munduruku Afterword: Wilmar D’Angelis Format: 240 x 240 mm Pages: 80 Cover: paperback ISBN: 978-85-96-00546-3 Keywords: Brazilian Indians, Indian culture, multicultural

EVERY DAY IS DOOMSDAY In order to write this book, Rodrigo Lacerda read official reports, mostly from science magazines that present research on pollution and global warming. Some proposals, which he classifies as eccentric, suggest that citizens share equally the damage resulting from environmental problems, instead of trying to eliminate them. Every day is Doomsday uses a peculiar, good-humored voice to introduce a science magazine journalist sent to cover a UN event that discusses the ways in which we can ensure the lives of future generations. The man is shocked with the absurd ideas proposed by scientists. The resignation in the scientists’ views inspires the journalist to reevaluate his way of life on the planet, his choices and his relationships. To conclude, Lacerda invites the reader to think again about the environmental crisis. MACUNAÍMA – THE HERO WITH NO CHARACTER One of the most exciting books in Brazilian literature, Macunaíma (1928) is a kind of “open encyclopedia” of geography, nature, culture and Brazilian people. In the book, we can find out about folk traditions, indigenous people’s cultures, historical events, as well as humor, poetry and stylistic freedom to invent words, for example. According to writer and university professor Noemi Jaffe, who writes the afterword and the book notes, Macunaíma “is certainly not a quick reading. It’s a book that should be read slowly, back and forth, and reread.” This edition includes 697 glossary entries as well as 540 notes that attempt to enlighten, deepen, and bring theoretical context and criticism to the text. Mariana Zanetti’s colorful and anthropophagic illustrations contribute to this original edition of a modern classic of Brazilian literature.
