A girl and her mom are eating lunch at home. The girl says,

“ Mom, I ’ m learning about legends at school. What ’ s your favorite legend? ”

“ My favorite legend? Robin Hood! ” says Mom.

“ Really? Who ’ s Robin Hood? ” asks the girl.

“ Robin Hood is famous! ”

“ Is he from America? ”

“ No, he ’ s not! He ’ s from England, but he ’ s famous around the world. Many boys and girls love Robin Hood. ”

“ Tell me the legend, Mom! ”

“ OK! The year is 1175… I think... ”

“ You think? ”

“ Robin Hood is a legend. There are many questions about his life. But… do you know about the king of England in 1175? ”

“ No… ”

Eat your lunch and I can tell you. ”

King Richard is the king of England. He is a good king and he says, “ England needs help! I need to go and defend my country. ”

King Richard has a younger brother, John. King Richard says, “ John, be England ’ s new king for now. But I ’ m coming home one day, and then I can be king again. ”

King John is a very bad king. He says, “ I want everybody ’ s money! ”

King John talks to the Sheriff, “ Help me. Get everybody ’ s money. ” The Sheriff is a very bad man and he is happy to help a bad king.

People are poor and sad. They need food. Families can ’ t feed their children!

5

Sherwood Forest is a big forest in the center of England. Some poor people say, “ There are many animals in Sherwood Forest. Let ’ s hunt them and eat them! "

But King John says, “ You may not hunt my animals! This is my forest! ”

Robin Hood is a little boy, and his father goes to Sherwood Forest and hunts a deer for dinner. The Sheriff sees him and says, “ You may not be here! Now, King John can take all your money and your house! ”

Then, the Sheriff’s men kill Robin Hood’s father! Robin Hood, his mother, his brothers, and his sisters are very sad – and very poor.

6

Twenty years go by. Robin Hood is now a man, and he is living in Sherwood Forest. King John says that he can ’ t live there – it ’ s the King ’ s forest – but Robin Hood can run fast, he has a bow and arrow, and he is very smart.

Robin Hood has friends in the forest, the Merry Men. “ We live in a dangerous place, ” he tells them. “ King John can kill us here, but we can help the poor people of England. Poor people need our help. We can take money from rich people and give it to them. King John is a bad king and people need food. ”

7

One day, Robin Hood is walking in the forest and he meets a very big man. The two men want to cross a river.

“ Wait for me! ” says Robin Hood.

“ No! ” says the big man. “ You wait for me! I can fight you. ” He has a big stick.

Robin Hood gets a stick and says, “ I can fight you, too! ” He uses his stick and fights the big man. The two men fight for a long time and then Robin Hood falls in the water!

The men laugh. It is funny. They are not angry. Robin Hood says, “ You ’ re a very good fighter! ”

8

“ What ’ s your name? ” Robin Hood asks.

“ John Little, ” says the big man. “ I love King Richard, but he ’ s not in England now, and I don ’ t like King John. He ’ s a bad king! I ’ m looking for Robin Hood. He helps poor people. ”

“ I am Robin Hood. ”

“ You are? Can I help you, Robin Hood? ”

“ Yes. Now your name is not John Little. It ’ s Little John, and you ’ re my friend. Let ’ s go meet my other friends, the Merry Men. ”

Robin Hood and Little John are very happy. The Merry Men meet Little John and they like him, too.

9

One day, Robin Hood goes to the river and sees a stranger there. The stranger is wearing brown clothes and he is fishing.

“ You can ’ t fish here! ” says Robin Hood. “ This is our river! ”

I can fish here,” says the stranger. “And you can’t stop me!”

OK, ” says Robin Hood. “ Carry me across the river and you can fish here! ”

“ No, ” says the stranger. “ You carry me across the river! ”

The stranger is big and heavy. “ You can ’ t carry me across the river, ” he says to Robin Hood. “ You ’ re very small! ” He laughs.

Now Robin Hood is angry. He says, “ You ’ re heavy, but I can carry you! ” and he carries the man across the river.

10

“ Now it ’ s your turn! ” says Robin Hood. “ You can carry me! ”

The man is carrying Robin Hood and they are in the river. Robin Hood falls in the water. It is very funny and both men laugh. Robin Hood says, “I like you. My name is Robin Hood. What’s your name?”

“ I ’ m Friar Tuck, ” says the stranger. “ Can I help you and the Merry Men? I want to help poor people! ”

Robin Hood is happy. “ And you love God, ” he says, “ and you can tell us about God! Yes, come with us! ”

11

Robin Hood and the Merry Men are very smart. Sometimes, rich people come inside the forest. Robin Hood meets them, and asks, “ Do you want food? Come eat with me and my friends! ”

They eat, and then Robin Hood says, “ Now give us your money! ” Robin Hood and the Merry Men fight the rich people and take their money. Sometimes, Robin Hood and the Merry Men go up in the trees with their bows and arrows. People don ’ t see them, but then they come down and the rich people are scared.

“ Give us all your money! ” they say.

12

Then, Robin Hood and the Merry Men go to poor people ’ s houses.

The people don ’ t have food. “ Do you need food? ” asks Robin Hood. “ We have money. Here! This is a gift for you. ”

The poor people say, “ Thank you, Robin Hood! ” Robin Hood is famous here. All the people love him. He helps them all.

“ King John takes poor people ’ s money, ” Robin Hood tells the Merry Men. “ They don ’ t have bread, meat, vegetables, or fruit. In winter, they ’ re cold, too. We need to give them money and help them. The money is not for us! ”

Robin Hood likes wearing different costumes.

One day, he is walking in the forest, wearing a knight ’ s clothes. He is thinking about Maid Marion. He loves Maid Marion and he wants to marry her. “ Where ’ s my Maid Marion? ” he thinks. “ I want to see her. ”

Then, he sees another knight in the trees in front of him!

“ What are you doing? Where are you going? ” he asks.

The other knight doesn ’ t speak. Robin Hood says, “ You don ’ t speak? Why are you here? Are you doing something bad? ”

Again, the other knight doesn ’ t speak.

“ Then, let ’ s fight! ” says Robin Hood, and he fights the knight for one hour! They are very tired.

They stop, and Robin Hood takes off his helmet. The other knight sees him and says, “ Robin Hood? ” It ’ s a big surprise.

14

The other knight takes off her helmet, too. “ Maid Marion! It ’ s you! ” says Robin Hood.

“Robin Hood, my love, it’s you!” says Maid Marion.

But Maid Marion is sad. She has a problem and she talks to Robin about it. “ My father says, ‘ Marry the Sheriff ’ s friend. ’ But I don ’ t want to. The Sheriff and his friend are bad men! And I love you ! ”

Robin Hood says, “ I love you, too! Marry me now in this forest! ” So they marry and are very happy. Maid Marion likes living in Sherwood Forest with Robin Hood and his friends.

15

King John and the Sheriff are very angry with Robin Hood and the Merry Men. They say to everybody in England, “ Can you find Robin Hood? Find him, and we can give you money! ” It is very dangerous for Robin Hood now!

One day, in Sherwood Forest, Robin Hood meets a butcher with a horse. They are carrying meat. “ Good morning, ” he says, “ I ’ m Robin Hood. May I buy your meat, your clothes, and your horse? ”

The man says, “ Yes, you may. ”

Robin Hood takes the meat, puts on the butcher ’ s clothes, and says, “ Now I can go to the city and sell the meat. Then I can give more money to poor people. ”

16

Everybody in the city buys Robin Hood ’ s meat.

The Sheriff comes to see Robin Hood and says, “ Who are you?

You ’ re new in the city and your meat is very cheap! ”

“ My meat is delicious, ” says Robin Hood, “ and the people need food. There are lots of big animals in Sherwood Forest. Come with me. We can hunt some and sell the meat. ”

“ Yes, ” says the Sheriff. “ Then people can buy more meat here. I want to get richer! ”

“ Come with me to the forest! ” says Robin Hood.
