It’s Roman times, nearly 2000 years ago. Pompeii is a busy city. It’s near a mountain called Vesuvius. Vesuvius is a big volcano. It’s the morning of August 24, 79 A.D. As usual, people in Pompeii are shopping, meeting friends, and buying and selling things. Then Vesuvius erupts! Volcanic ash is falling on Pompeii. These people are running away. But the cloud of ash is too hot and fast. They can’t escape. The ash is catching them.
Two thousand years later, these archaeologists are working on the ruins in Pompeii. They have a special method to excavate the buildings.
These are people from that day 2000 years ago. They look like sculptures.
You can visit Pompeii and explore the old city. These people are tourists and they’re sightseeing. Two and a half million tourists visit Pompeii every year.

I’m crazy about big cities. They’re fantastic! There is always something great to do – you can go to amusement parks, museums, street fairs, and shopping malls. There are statues and monuments and there’s usually a lot of history. Here’s a picture of my favorite city: Boston. There are lots of new, interesting places to see, but there are historic buildings and old streets too. There are also lots of tourists. My mother can’t stand them, but I don’t mind. It’s part of living in a cool city.
Big cities? Tall buildings? Lots of tourists? I can’t stand them. I love my town, Franklin. It’s not a historic town, and we don’t have big buildings or cathedrals, but I don’t mind. We have a quiet, interesting Main Street with one Chinese restaurant, a fast food restaurant, and some clothing stores. We have a fantastic sports store. My friends and I go there about once a week.
