Electricity In 1752, Benjamin Franklin experimented with a kite one stormy night in Philadelphia, proving that lightning was electricity. Years later, Thomas Edison made the light bulb so efficient that it has become available to all of us inexpensively.
The ancient Chinese and Native Americans used smoke signals to send messages across distances, but the invention of written words made sending lasting messages possible. Numbers to keep record of things (how many sheep one had, for example) were invented a long time ago, but it’s believed that written language was created by the Sumerian people, who lived in 2500 BCE in the region that today we call Iraq.

Penicillin The English biologist Alexander Fleming was looking for something to kill bacteria that infected wounds. He went on vacation and forgot his experiments for some days. When he got back, his table had been contaminated by a fungus that killed all bacteria. It became the first antibiotic.
Post-it Coca-Cola No one knows exactly the formula of Coca-Cola. All we know is that John Pemberton mixed lots of ingredients trying to find a headache medicine. This medicine was sold as a tonic for many years before becoming the most famous soda of all times.
Spencer Silver, a scientist from a company called 3M, invented an adhesive that didn’t stick to anything for too long. No one wanted to buy it, though. One day, a friend came up with the idea of using the adhesive to anchor his bookmark in his hymnbook, so he wouldn’t lose it while singing in church. It was a success.
