THE THREE MUSKETEERS

Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870) was born near Paris. Dumas experienced racial discrimination all his life, because his father, a general in the French army, was the son of a French man and a black Haitian woman.

In 1822 he got a job as secretary to the Duke of Orléans (who later became King Louis-Philippe). Dumas started to write plays, which were successful, but he soon began to write novels as well. His books, including The Three Musketeers which was published in 1844, were immediately popular, and translated into many languages. Dumas wrote a lot (often with the help of other writers) and made a lot of money from his writing, but he spent a lot and was sometimes in financial difficulty. He also had problems with the French government, and lived in Belgium for several years, and then Russia and Italy. He died in France in 1870.

Chapter one To paris

Goodbye Father!

Goodbye Mother! Thank you for the medicine!

It was April, 1625. D’Artagnan, a young man, was leaving his home in the south of France to go to Paris. In his pocket he was carrying a letter and a bottle of medicine.

Goodbye my son! Please remember to give my le er to Mr. Tréville. Then you can learn to be a musketeer!

A few days later, d’Artagnan arrived in the town of Meung. There, he met a man with a scar on his face.

What is that in your pocket?

The man took the letter. Then he turned and spoke to a beautiful lady.

A le er to Mr. Tréville from my father.

Did Mr. Tréville send you to kill me? Here – give the le er to me!

Cardinal Richelieu wants you to go to England today. You must watch the Duke of Buckingham carefully, and tell me when he leaves London.

D’Artagnan rode on to Paris, where he found a room to live in from a man called Mr. Bonacieux. Then he hurried off to visit Mr. Tréville, the head of the King’s musketeers.

Who was this man?

Mr. Tréville, my father wrote a letter to you, but a man took it from me in Meung.

He had a scar on his face, and he was with a beautiful woman, sir.

D’Artagnan ran out of Mr. Tréville’s home, but by accident he ran into one of the musketeers. His name was Athos.

Ow! That’s my bad shoulder. Right, meet me in the Luxembourg Gardens at 12 o’clock. We must have a duel!

Oh, but look! There he is, in the street!

What are you doing? Are you sick? Right, meet me for a duel at 1 o’clock.

Then d’Artagnan tried to run by another musketeer. His name was Porthos.

Next d’Artagnan saw a handkerchief on the road. It was near Aramis, a tall musketeer, so d’Artagnan gave him the handkerchief.

D’Artagnan did not find the strange man with the scar. But, at 12 o’clock, he went to meet Athos for the duel.

Why are you giving me a handkerchief?

Do you want people to laugh at me and say that I’m a woman? Right! Meet me at Luxembourg at 2 o’clock – for a duel!

Right, let’s do this quickly! My shoulder is hurting.

Please, try this medicine that my mother gave me. It can help you, I think.

The three musketeers were getting ready for their duels with d’Artagnan. But suddenly they heard Cardinal Richelieu’s guards!

That feels much better. Thank you, young man.

Are you fighting with us or with them, boy?

We are arresting you all for dueling!

With you musketeers, of course!

Chapter two Constance

The next day, Mr. Bonacieux, came to see d’Artagnan.

D’Artagnan, sir, I am happy that you are living in my rooms. I hear you are a brave man. My wife, Constance, is the Queen’s maid. A man wants to take her away. I need your help!

Who is this man? What does he look like?

I agree. We must help Constance

He has brown hair and a scar on his face.

I know this man! I met him in Meung!

We must save the Queen’s maid, Constance Bonacieux. Cardinal Richelieu does not like Queen Anne – or her maid. This is because the Queen is in love with the Duke of Buckingham – an Englishman!

D’Artagnan went to see the three musketeers.

Bonacieux!

Some of Cardinal Richelieu’s guards were waiting outside Mr. Bonacieux’s house. They wanted to take Constance away when she came home. D’Artagnan and the musketeers were hiding inside.

After a short time, d’Artagnan heard a noise. It was Constance Bonacieux coming into the house, and the guards were holding her arms!

The guards left, and the musketeers followed them. D’Artagnan and Constance Bonacieux were alone.

Who wanted to take you away?

What are you doing? Can’t you see that this is Constance Bonacieux?

You are very beautiful and sweet. Please can I see you again?

Ah ha! The man from Meung!

Yes, of course. I work at the palace. You can visit me there.

Good evening, Constance. Where are you going on this warm evening?

Later that night, d’Artagnan saw Constance Bonacieux with a strange man.

Good evening, d’Artagnan. This is the Duke of Buckingham. I am taking him to meet the Queen at the Louvre Palace.

D’Artagnan followed Constance Bonacieux and the Duke of Buckingham to the palace. Then the Queen came into the room and Buckingham took her hand.

My dear Duke of Buckingham. It is wonderful to see you.

Oh, Anne. It is wonderful to see you, too. I love you very much.

And I love you, too. Please take my gift of twelve diamond pins back to England with you. You can wear them and think of me.

No, sir, I do not.

Your wife escaped! Who wanted to take her, do you know?

Late last night, she was with the Duke of Buckingham and the Queen at the palace. The Queen gave Buckingham twelve diamond pins to take back to England.

The Queen loves Buckingham, and that is very bad for the King – and for France.

You must watch your wife at all times. She is helping the Duke to meet the Queen. That is dangerous for us all.

Guard, give this letter to Milady de Winter. She must dance with the Duke of Buckingham in London and bring back two of the diamond pins to France.

Cardinal Richelieu was speaking to Mr. Bonacieux and the Count de Rochefort.

Two weeks later, Cardinal Richelieu got a letter from London. It was from Milady de Winter.

Good!

Milady de Winter danced with the Duke of Buckingham and she has two of the pins. She is bringing them back to France now. I want the King to know about Anne’s love for the Duke. I want him to see that she only has ten pins.

Sir, I have an idea. You must plan a ball for the Queen to show her your love. Ask her to wear your gift of twelve diamond pins to show her love for you.

That is a good idea, Cardinal. The Queen loves dancing and she loves balls!

Cardinal Richelieu went to see the King at the palace.

Thank you, Constance. Please give d’Artagnan this letter and ask him to give it to the Duke.

I’m very worried.

What can I do, Constance? The King wants me to wear the twelve diamond pins to the ball. But I gave them to the Duke of Buckingham and now they are in England.

I can ask d’Artagnan to go to England and get the pins back for you. He is very brave.

Please go to England, d’Artagnan, and give this letter to the Duke of Buckingham. Then bring me the diamond pins he gives you. The Queen needs them.

I am leaving now, Constance. I want to help the Queen because I think that you are beautiful and I love you. Thank you, d’Artagnan.

D’Artagnan went to find Athos, Aramis, and Porthos.

Get your horses ready! We are going to England, my friends!

Chapter three On the Road to England

D’Artagnan now had a servant, a young man called Planchet. The next day, d’Artagnan, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis left for England with their servants. It was dangerous, because the Cardinal’s guards wanted to stop them.

Kill him, Porthos! Then come and nd us.

They rode all morning until they came to an inn. There, Porthos met a man and they started ghting. The man worked for Cardinal Richelieu, but Porthos did not know that.

I hope he is not dead.

There was no time to stop, so d’Artagnan, Athos, and Aramis rode on. That evening, they waited in another inn for Porthos, but he did not come.

Where is Porthos?

The next morning, five of the Cardinal’s guards attacked d’Artagnan, Aramis, and Athos. Aramis was badly hurt.

So d’Artagnan, Athos, and Planchet took Aramis to an inn.

This is not real money! I cannot use it. Pay me with real money!

We’ll take Aramis to this inn. He can stay here, and his servant can help him. We can find him later when he is better.

It is real money. Are you sick? Look at it!

That evening, they arrived at another inn. They ate dinner and drank wine. But the man at the inn did not take Athos’ money and they began to fight.

D’Artagnan and Planchet quickly rode on.

THE THREE MUSKETEERS

D’Artagnan leaves his family and his home in the south of France. He plans to travel to Paris and join the King’s musketeers. He makes some good friends in Paris, but he also finds that it’s easy to make enemies; powerful and cruel enemies.

D’Artagnan soon discovers just how exciting –and dangerous – life can be for a musketeer.
