My name is Danny Cooper and I ’ m eleven years old. It ’ s the summer vacation now, and I ’ m at home in my parents ’ big house in Maine. But in the semester I stay at a big school near Boston. I don ’ t like it there very much because the boys say bad things about me. They say I ’ m stupid, and I don ’ t have any friends.

My mother is a lawyer and my father is a doctor. They are always working and I don ’ t see them very much. Most of the time when I ’ m home I play computer games in my bedroom, or watch TV.

4

You must understand.

I know that my parents love me, but they have very important jobs. Dad is often in the hospital all night and Mom sometimes travels to other cities or countries.

The problem is, because I stay in Boston a lot of the time, I don ’ t have friends here in Maine. I ’ m very sad about this because it ’ s beautiful here – my parents house is large and it ’ s next to some high cliffs and a long white beach. I want to play on the beach and climb the cliffs, but I don ’ t have any friends to play or climb with. I am very lonely. ’

5

There is one good thing in my life. Her name is Anna and she ’ s our au pair – she helps my mother with jobs around the house and looks after me in the vacations. Anna is from Ireland, and she often tells me funny stories about her family there. She has six sisters and two brothers, and she talks to them every day on the Internet. Anna loves her Irish family, but she also loves living in America. healthy. It s a beautiful day, Danny, she says one Saturday afternoon. “ Don ’ t play games. Go for a walk. ”

Anna doesn ’ t like me watching TV and playing computer games all the time. She thinks it ’ s not “ ’ ”

6

“OK,” I say. I get up and go outside. I walk across the road and stand on the cliff. It is sunny, and I can hear the sea below. There is the sound of a car stopping behind me on the road, then a man shouts, “ We don ’ t want you, you stupid dog! ”

I turn to see a blue car. A man and woman sit in it with angry faces. The man opens his door and the next moment a black dog falls on the road. Then the man drives away.

The dog looks at me with sad eyes and whines. I turn and walk towards the house. Then I look back again. She is limping behind me. No, ” I say. “ I can ’ t take you with me. ”

I start walking away again. I get to the house then turn – and she is there again. “

7

“ What can I do? ” I say to Anna and my parents.

Anna puts her hand on the dog ’ s head. “ She ’ s very cute, ” she says. “ But she ’ s very thin and one of her legs has a bad cut. ” Then she sees a word on the dog ’ s collar. “ Her name is Nuala, ” she says. “ That means ‘ very beautiful ’ in Irish. ”

“ She can ’ t live here, Danny, ” says my mother, and her face is not happy.

“ But Nuala wants to be my friend, ” I say. “ Please Mom and Dad – I want to look after her.

“ No Danny, ” says my father. “ Your mother is right. Anna, please take the dog to the vet tomorrow morning. ”

Your ”

“ She ’ s not healthy, ” says the vet the next morning.

“ That cut on her leg is very bad. ”

“ What can we do? ” I ask.

“ Her leg hurts her a lot, ” the vet says, “ and she doesn ’ t have a home. I ’ m sorry. I can help her sleep now, for a long time. ”

“ No! ” I say. “ No Anna! The vet wants Nuala to die. ”

“ Please Danny… ” says Anna. “ You can ’ t look after Nuala. ”

“ Oh yes I can! ” I say. “ Let ’ s take her home with us. We can put her in one of the old stables behind the house. Mom and Dad never go there. I can give her food and look after her leg. Please Anna. ”

Anna thinks for a moment.

“ OK Danny, ” she says. “ Let ’ s help Nuala. But don ’ t tell your mom or dad. I don ’ t want to lose my job. ”

9

Nuala likes her new home in the stables. She waits for me every morning and I come and give her food and put a clean bandage on her leg. She stops limping and her eyes are happy. She doesn ’ t whine now.

Nuala and I start walking on the beach in the mornings and evenings. My mom and dad are not often at home and they don ’ t see us. Only Anna knows about Nuala.

I ’ m very happy because you are happy, Danny, ” she says. “ I love seeing you outside, walking in the clean air. Your face is healthy. And I ’ m happy because you have a good friend. You ’ re not lonely now, are you? ”

10

“ Why don ’ t you play with your video games? ” Mom says to me one Sunday.

“ They ’ re boring, Mom, ” I say. “ I like walking now. I like going to the cliff and the beach. I like watching the sea. ”

“ That ’ s good, ” she says.

I know, I say. And then I smile. “ Can I go out now? ” I say.

“ Of course. ”

They watch me leave

“ This is great, Danny, ” says Dad. “ Now you need a friend to play with. ” “ ” smile. course. the house with surprise in their faces.

11

It ’ s August now. Nuala is healthy and happy. She loves me and I love her. We run across the cliff and beach every morning and evening. But I am worried, and I know Anna is worried, too. In one month, I go back to my school in Boston.

“ I am looking for a family for Nuala, Danny, ” says Anna.

“ No, Anna! ” I shout. “ I cannot leave her. I cannot leave my friend! I cannot go back to Boston. ” don ’

Danny… ” says Anna. “ This is my job. This is my home. I t want to lose it. ”

“I know,” I say. “But Nuala is my life.”

“ My job is my life, too, ” says Anna.

12

It ’ s September now. In one week I go to my school in Boston. What can I do about Nuala? I do not know and I feel very worried and sad. I leave Nuala in the stable and go for a walk on the cliff. It is boring in the stable, but the weather is stormy and I know she doesn ’ t like the rain and the wind. I walk to the cliff and think about my beautiful friend. There is a strong wind – and then my foot slips. The next moment I am falling. My arms, back, and legs hit plants and small rocks. Four, five seconds pass, and then my body hits a large rock and rests there.

13

The wind and rain hit my head. I can hear the waves move across the beach. The water is very high. I am a meter above it.

I look across at the beach and see a man and a woman.

“ Help me! ” I shout. “ Please, telephone my parents! ” I shout my parents ’ telephone number to them.

I see them talk. Then the man takes a cell phone from his jacket and speaks into it.

“ Your parents are coming! ” he shouts to me. “ The Coast Guard is coming, too. ”

14

Minutes pass. I look down and now the water is coming up. It ’ s thirty centimeters under my feet. A helicopter is in the sky and I see the Coast Guard ’ s boat, but the waves are too high and they cannot help me. A minute later, a police car drives across the beach. Then I hear shouting. I look up to see my parents on the cliff above me.

My feet are in the water now. I am feeling very scared. “ Danny! Danny! ” I hear my mother shout. “ Climb across the cliff! Try to get to the beach. ”

I look up at her, then put my foot on the rock. I try to climb but my foot slips and the next moment I am in the sea.
