Honeybees live in very organized colonies in beehives or bee nests. In both cases, it is possible to identify their social structure: The queen is responsible for populating the colony; the drone must be ready to fertilize a receptive queen; and worker bees are responsible for tasks such as handling the pollen and nectar brought by other bees to the hive, among others. Honeybees have two stomachs and use their honey stomach to store the nectar collected from the heart of flowers and take it to the honey-makers back in the hive. Then the worker bee passes the nectar to the indoor bees (or honey-makers) from mouth to mouth. This process of transferring nectar from bee to bee changes the nectar to honey. When bees visit a flower, they also rub against the flower’s pollen grains, which stick to their bodies as it travels from flower to flower. This process is known as pollination, and it is important so plants can continue to grow. 32

Bees are fascinating creatures living in very organized colonies – that is why they can do all they do. Bees are also vital for the preservation of ecological balance and biodiversity in nature, indicating when something is wrong. In many different places around the world, bees are in trouble because of habitat losses, their food being exposed to pesticides and the effects of climate change.
