THE WONDROUS KINGDOM During 21st-26th September 2015, exclusively at the 62nd IADS congress, we were not only accompanied by the Young Dentist Forum but also the FDI World Dental Federation congress. Delegates and participants could attend the lectures from renowned speakers all over the world, and the expo consisted of more than 250 companies for them to explore. 6

CONGRESS

he aim of IADS meetings is always has been to gather representatives and delegates of IADS members, partners of IADS and people interested in the association together to exchange ideas, update, brainstorm and work together. This year we arranged the General Assembly, committee meetings, scientific research contest, workshops, dental Olympics, training sessions, cultural exchange fair. The delegates stayed at the five-star Grand Fourwings Convention Hotel Bangkok and the convention hall is nearby with an area over 50,000 square meters which showcase IADS FDI and YDW congress altogether. Delegates also enjoyed the beautiful city tours. We have visited the old part of Bangkok along the Rachadamnoen road where unique architectures were observed. Located here is the Democracy Monument, which was constructed by the order of

King Rama V. We also visited Wat Phra Kaew which is regarded as the most sacred Buddhist temple (wat) in Thailand. The Emerald Buddha housed in the temple is a potent religio-political symbol and the palladium of Thai society. We also had fun at the River Cruise, Ayutthaya (the former capital of Thailand) in pre-congress tour and enjoyed travelling to Pattaya, Chonburi in post congress tour. Lastly we, the local organizing committee of the 62nd Thailand IADS congress are thankful to all the delegates for spending time with us and keeping the IADS tradition going for the promising future of the association. Along with a fascinating history and a unique culture that includes delectable Thai food and massage, Thailand features a modern capital city, and friendly people who epitomize Thailand’s “land of smiles” reputation. As the president of local organizing committee, it was a great pleasure welcoming all of our friends and colleagues to the 62nd International association of dental student congress in Thailand.

EXCHANGE

IADS CLINICAL EXCHANGE

C  IADS Magazine

linical exchange has always been a major component of our association’s activities. Since its inception, officials within the IADS family have been striving to create and maintain a network of member countries that are hosting dental students from around the world. Each year, hundreds of dental students from around 60 IADS member countries are given the life changing opportunity to visit foreign a country and experience dentistry in a whole other way. As technology around us is evolving and we start to live in a world that stresses immediacy, where everything we need is more often than not only a few keywords and a push of a button away, we have come to realize that in order to grow and evolve the IADS clinical exchange program to include even more hosting countries and a bigger number of exchangees each season, we need to embrace the technological advances that are available to us. This is why we have endeavored since the beginning of the 2015/2016 IADS term, to develop and prepare the IADS Exchange Portal. In brief, it is a website that would make an already functional and effective way of handling the IADS exchange applications, into a streamlined process which guides both students and our member countries’ exchange officer into making sure the exchange experience is the best that can

8

be, by limiting the hassles of paperwork, encouraging transparency and easing access to information about our members’ exchange programs. We are hoping that starting this year, dental students from around the world will be able to login to their IADS Exchange Portal account and easily look for clinical internships offered by our member countries. They will also have the opportunity to simply follow the guidelines towards applying to any clinical internship that interests them and track their application status. Eventually, the goal is to make the IADS Exchange Portal a central database where all of the different aspects of our exchange programs are handled: from contract signing between our member officials, to students applying, going into exchange and reporting back on their experience. Ultimately, our goal is to make it easier and more accessible for all dental students worldwide to experience the joy and thrill of visiting foreign countries and living dentistry as their hosting colleagues do. And we are betting on the Internet, as an instrument of growth, to reach our target.

On the first of March 2016 the Dental Project officially started. We all came together from all over the world in Kathmandu, the bustling capital of Nepal. The very next day our journey to Chitwan began. An Opening ceremony brought us together as a group. Additionally, it introduced us to the incredible Nepalese dentists who oversaw our work and shared their experience. Three days of dental camp followed. Extractions, Restoration and Scaling as well as thankful smiles were what our days consisted of. 1200 patients were treated in this short amount of time, all of which wouldn’t have been

ight in between of two of the world’s biggest countries lies Nepal, a small country known best for being the host to Mt. Everest. Even though Nepal is famous for its share of the Himalaya there is much more to it than what meets the eye at first glance. The country is filled to the brim with cultural and religious diversity, wonderful architecture, diverse landscapes and a vast history. The real gem of Nepal, however, is its people. Their kindness and hospitality surpasses many. Looking at the smiling face of a Nepali is like looking at the rising sun. So naturally, 23 dental students and dentists from all over the world travelled to Nepal to make their smiles even more beautiful. And I was very happy to be one of them.

accomplished by us if it had not been for all the helping hands of our Nepalese assistants. We also visited a school to talk to the pupils about oral hygiene and taught them how to brush their teeth. We were greeted with flowers and curious gazes. Our stay at the school consisted of games and questions. After all children are the same all over the world, quick to smile, eager to learn. Then we travelled to Sauraha a town right next to the Chitwan National Park. There are many places to explore. First we did a boat tour on the Rapti River passing motionless crocodiles on the banks and rhinos

The Dental Project of Nepal in 2016 took place from the first of March until the 15th. Because of its poor dental care in rural areas Sairam Dental and the IADS set up this program. Three days of dental camp and one day of education on oral hygiene were scheduled. The rest of our time in Nepal was downright filled with adventures.

relaxing in the cooling water to the starting point of our hike through the National Park. We walked through part of the jungle and open terrain all while being on the lookout for wild animals. On our way we even spotted monkeys, elephants and rhinos and the odd imprint of tiger paws in the sand. In the evening we were lucky enough to celebrate Shiva’s birthday, a national Hindu holiday, with the locals bringing all of us a little closer to the Nepali culture. Our days after that were all about elephants. We got to see an elephant breeding centre where two month old elephant babies were chasing each other under the watchfull eye of their mother. Moreover, we went to an elephant bath. During that we mounted the elephant and she then sprayed us with her trunk, effectively showering us in river water. An elephant safari was scheduled as well. The dental seminar that was held for us was very informative. Some of the dentists gave lectures on their work. Dr Ajay Neupane, who founded Sairam Dental with his wife Dr Saru Tapa, presented the extensive volunteer work their organization has done so far in Nepal. The doctors also taught us suturing and root canal techniques. That same day the closing ceremony was held. It concluded our dental project. The day after we travelled to Pokhara. There our last days in Nepal were filled with white water rafting, Paragliding and the hike up to a Bhuddist stupa. Soon we had to take the bus back

10

to Kathmandu. We arrived late on the 13th of March, but were able to squeeze in some shopping in the tourist district of the capital, Thamel. The narrow streets were busy with people selling pashmina scarfs and trekking stores. The whole next day was dedicated to sightseeing. First we visited Swayambhudnath, an extensive Bhuddist temple complex atop a hill overlooking the capital. Then we went to Patan Durbar Square, a historical part of Lalitpur consisting of for example temles and the palast square. It is famous for its rich cultural heritage. Even though we would have liked to stay in Nepal indefinitely, of course we had to leave at some point. We arrived in Nepal hoping to help people in need. We thought we would give them our time and knowledge. But we didn’t anticipate that we would receive so much more in return. I believe that our stay in Nepal will be forever ingrained in our memory. The experience we gained will not be forgotten. We return to our homes not only with a lighter heart but also with friends not only from Nepal, but from all-around the world.

New additions to the committee for WOHD 2017: Hosam Eldeen Tarek, president of DSSA, has suggested to join the World Cancer Day WCD 2016 with WOHD since dental students’ aim to raise awareness in regard of oral cancer among our target patients and citizens in general. He already contacted WCD Team about the possibility of joining that day as dental students and they welcomed the idea. WOHD will use an online platform next year in which it will facilitate the following: 1. Communication between NPOs and IPO 2. Communication between IADS and students worldwide 3. Archives system that work automatically by saving previous editions 4. Interactive map of participants that ease viewing of Action plans, Reports and contacts. World Oral Health Day deserves a SnapStory on March 20th & hopefully there will be arrangements in that regard

TRAINING We were 11 trainees whom really gained a lot from this experience, we all empowered with that unique TNT spirit, we learnt how to communicate and present effectively, how to listen carefully, how to lead, how to work in team and manage our conflicts wisely, how to facilitate as well. We learnt about cultures differences and how to deal with and accept these differences, our trainers motivate us and helped us to believe in ourselves and love them the way they are, we meditate, flew with our souls, gained that boost of self-confidence, in order to spread that confidence among people in our society. I would

like to take this opportunity and give them special thanks on behalf of all the trainees through our IADS official Magazine as a kind of appreciation for their efforts, here are our beloved trainers : 1  Ahmed Abaddi from Jordan 2  Alaa Ibrahim 3  Zainab Azhari We had been trained for 30 hours which divided into 3 days. After this intensive training we did spread the word and training spirit by conducting our own sub-regional training sessions for 105 participants it was a mix of fun, benefits and motivation, so it reached our expectations and achieved the proper TNT/ SRT goals. Birth of Dentistry in Lebanon … And the Near East region! In 1910, dental education was first introduced in Lebanon by the American University of Beirut, AUB, to be the first dental school in the entire Near East region. As the United States was making tremendous progress in the art of dentistry, AUB invited Dr. Arthur Dray who was brought up in Beirut, and attained his dental degree in Philadelphia, to bring dental education to Lebanon and organize a dental school at AUB, that can provide adequate dental care to the Near East region. And so, the era

of modern dentistry in Lebanon and the Near East started with Dr. Dray and Dr. Amin Haddad at AUB after it had been practiced by the town barbers who extracted teeth with their clumsy tools. It operated for good 30 years before it closed. Now AUB only provides a postgraduate program in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics which was established in 2001, 61 years after closing the School of Dentistry. Today, Lebanon graduates highly professional dentists and dental specialists from three universities that meet licensing conditions prescribed by the Lebanese Ministries of Health and Education. Beirut Arab University, BAU Saint Joseph University USJ Lebanese University, LU All three of them are concerned about providing oral health care among the Lebanese communities through preventive and therapeutic measures, based on research and evidence. In 1920 Saint Joseph University founded the faculty of dentistry and adopted the five-year curriculum in 1967. In 1988, the faculty began to offer postgraduate studies with 8 specialties. Lebanese University which currently holds 521 dental students, had established the faculty of dentistry since 1983.

In 1995, Beirut Arab University established the faculty of dentistry with a full five-year curriculum, and in 2001 it started the postgraduate program. It currently graduates around 60 dentists each year from the undergraduate program, and has graduated 116 students since 2001 from the postgraduate program. In the IADS Mid-Year Meeting 2015 in Jordan, the Lebanese Association proposed to join the IADS as a full country member representing Lebanon. The IADS General Assembly welcomed the Lebanese Dental students to join the international family and since last year their association is working hard to engage more dental students in the voluntary work and community service. LADS is a non-profit, non-political organization representing Lebanese dental students. Our main goals are to give students a voice in the national and international forum, to create a globally connected student community and to develop and promote international contacts. We also organize different projects including prevention programs, volunteer work programs, training & workshops to research opportunities and many more. LADS proposed to host the IADS MidYear Meeting 2017 in Beirut and the meeting will be hosted by Beirut Arab University with a fruitful scientific conference.

PTTS is an enormous organisation who connects the Polish dental students. It was created in 1997 in Wrocław, beautiful Polish city in western Poland. Fast development took place in 1999. The PTSS is composed of a few departments. There are departments in every Polish city where a medical university is situated, that is: Poznań, Kraków, Zabrze, Lublin, Gdańsk, Łódż, Warsaw – the capital of Poland, Szczecin, Białystok and Wrocław, of course. The PTSS organises multiple conferences, dental trainings and competitions every year. The goal of PTSS is taking care of developping the dental knowledge and abilities and helping dental students to broaden their horizons in that way. The knowledge and skills often outreach the ones gained at universities. Only last year there were six huge conferences that included lectures, training and warming-up parties. There were a lot of dental students from every Polish medical university. Last conference was organised by PTSS Poznań. It is the same city where this year's FDI Congress will take place. The leader of

CONGRESS

THE 2016 FDI ANNUAL W RLD DENTAL CONGRESS IN POZNAN Poznań's PTSS is Ivo Domagała. He is also a member of administration of IADS and also an organisation of dentists that want something more called BE ACTIVE DENTIST. This year he also became the President of whole PTSS. This year's conference of PTSS Poznań left a wonderful impression in students' mind. It was already the 10th edition of the famous series of conferences: "The Dental News: Science!". There were a lot of famous dentists invited. They came from all over the world. Poznań welcomed for example: Dr Octavian Fagaras, PhD, DDS from Romania, Dr Emad Youssef from Germany, prof. Tarek Salah Morsi from Egypt, Dr Achraf Souayah from Tunisia, Dr Armando Lopez, DDS, Msc., Prof. Dr Bentahar Zakaria DMD, MSc, PhD from Maroko, many Polish incredible dentists and also a famous dentist of actors and sportsmen, showman himself Dr Stanley Miguel, board member of Digital Dentistry Society & SENAME, Founder of the “Dentists of Portugal”, Expert provider for Dental XP,White Clinic from Portugal. They gave us extraordinary lectures on which we had the opportunities to learn a lot. There was also a lotery offering winning wonderful and precious dental equipment given us by dental companies thanks to endeavours of members of PTSS Poznań. Obviously, every one who came to the conference was able to sleep in finest hotels of Poznań. The invited guests – famous dentists – said they were delighted to give us the lectures and thankful for warm welcoming and also very happy they finally visited Poznań because nobody had given them the opportunity like this before. Flattered with such a succes we are even more motivated to organise events like this, promoting gaining the knowledge by Polish student in a sharp way, not only basing on the lectures and evercises lead in universities but also widening the knowledge by experiencing of new technologies and methods from all over the world.

It has been a long time of preparing for the Event – organising the lectures and convenient place for presenting the products of dental companies, preparing the appropriate conditions for deliberation of the Parliament of FDI and for hosting thousands of participants from all over the world. Preparation also requires promoting the Event in different countries by comitted people. Speaking of those, we would like to present the organisation who will be an important participant in the Congress. It is called PTTS. The name can be translated as Polish Society of Dentistry Students.

he Road to India was not merely a volunteer dental convoy but indeed was much more and beyond that as it looked. The glorious 13 days long event, with the 6 candidates from two countries, exploring the cultural diversity and exchanging and learning the new mythology from the masters itself. The events included and covered every minute aspects of dentistry whether it be a continuing education or being a master with hands on and finally delivering your knowledge under the guidance of eminent faculties on the patients. VOLUNTARY

The day began on 10th January 2016, with the 3 candidates each from the Czech Republic and Saudi Arabia respectively landed in the capital city of the country, New Delhi along with many participants from India, setting truly an international standard. The First 3 days were concentrated on developing skills of latest modalities of modern dentistry with the in-depth knowledge of laser and advanced endodontics protocols such as Rotary instrumentations and advancement. We have always been a firm believer of “Tell, show and do “Technique and hence knowledge is incomplete if their implementation is not been covered. Hence, a very well organized Hans-on was carried out at Smile arch Academy on the approved Goat Jaw models. IADS strongly believes in giving back to the society and has been carrying out several programs across the country for the underserved population. As the Arthur Ashe has quoted “From what we get, we can make a living; what we give, however, makes a life.” aligns with our objectives and with this intension and motive, volunteer event commenced from the day 4th to Day 6th with emphasizing on oral examination for tons of people and providing them education and basic oral prophylaxis measures. Further, with the humongous demand support, we stretched our service for restorative, preventive, endodontic treatment. We also took complete precautions and necessary measure for the strict sterilization protocols and measure to completely avoid contamination and with this highly dedicated team, we took a step further and provided extraction for the ones in real need.

As Terry Pratchett has said “Why do you go away? So that you can come back So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving.” With this was the closing ceremony of Denthalon 2016 came to end from where it started and we made sure that all the participants are safely dropped off and we kept updates until they have reached safely. But this isn’t the end, but is a beginning of a new era, it’s going to be bigger and larger every year and every time, the memories and enlightening that we have received will go a long way in our heart.

After the busy schedule, it was time for our guest to visit Golden Triangle circuit comprising of three beautiful and remarkable cities, the first being Agra, situated on the bank of river Yamuna in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. We visited splendid Mughal-era buildings, most notably the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpūr Sikrī, all three of which are UNESCO Sites. From here we continued our journey to Jaipur which is the capital and largest city of the Indian state of Rajasthan in Northern India. It was founded on 18 November 1727 by Maharaja Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amer after whom the city is named. Jaipur is also popularly known as the “Pink City of India”.

VOLUNTARY On 14-11-2015 the registration was opened for dentists and dental students all over the world to share the benefits. we were pleased to be joined by students from different lands including: Slovakia, Jordon, Poland, Lebanon & Czech Republic.

Dental voluntary projects are great to reach people in need and help connecting dentist and dental students with their communities. In this 2016 project, we are targeting a primary oral health care with the goal of providing dental care in isolated and unserved regions, it includes giving dental education starting from simple basic dental facts. They also received clinical dental care they never had before, providing by dentist and supervised dental students, including examination, diagnosis and treatment. Which itself in many situations result in early detection and diagnosis of dental illness and oral cancer cases where early detection makes the whole difference.

At the middle of January of this year was the beginning of the fourth edition of the international convoy and welcoming the participants from all over the world. This followed by several workshops that aimed to orient and prepare all the participants. And by the end of the month, dentists from various sp. In dentistry, newly graduated dentists and dental students, all started their journey of humanity and travelled to sennar and Wight Nile states that far 400 km from the capital Khartoum to provide dental services & care. And all the patients were given free post-operative drugs as a final step of the treatment plan.

The members of the association started the preparations for this event since the early September in 2015 in order to be arranged in most possible and appropriate way to give the best dental services.

The association was very concerned with spreading dental awareness; therefore, the participants were divided into groups to cover all areas of both states with instructions and techniques in order to maintain a good oral hygiene. In addition to that flyers & booklets were

containing basic information about oral cancer and notable oral diseases were given to patients and visitors of the camp. The convoy was not all about learning and raising dental experience, but also the participants had a chance to visit the national museum and historical places in the second day of arrival of the international participants followed by a fun party in the beautiful Nile river, & many other enjoining tours and programs. And after the long hours of working that continued for 8 days, 13 hours in each day, the fourth international convoy ended successfully by treating, drawing smiles and providing services for more than 3000 patients.

TRAINING

TNT IZMIR

IADS Magazine

TRAINING OF NEW TRAINERS Let me explain a little about myself, I am Shayan Darvish from Iran (You can call me Sean) I have been a trainer since 2014 Prague which I graduated there as a trainer after passing my TNT course. Since then I have held local and International training sessions and now I am National Training Officer of Iran. I was informed about Izmir just one week before the program

26

due to some difficulties of the first trainer that was supposed to go there in the first place so I was informed to go instead and boy! how lucky I was to be given a chance to go there. When you become a trainer and try to manage your own training session that needs some work and preparation but when you want to actually train new trainers you have to be professional

T

raining of new trainers (TNT)! Let me guess, you are wondering what a TNT is. Well let me make that easy for you ;) IADS has a training committee which within the training sessions we are trying to make the dental students a professional in every aspect especially about soft skills. These soft skills will make you more confident and successful in your life time carrier and communication. Part of the training committee program is training of new trainers which after attending these sessions newly trainers will join the training family of IADS. So I think now that you have enough brief information about TNTs we can get to the interesting part of Izmir. TNTs are held within many cities in a year but in MAY 2016 it took place in the beautiful city of Izmir.

TRAINING

and master every soft skill and use it not only to teach them but to make them believe in it and see how you are using it as a professional so it was a little hard for me but I am so happy that I went there and that I made it happen. Believe it or not I told the attendants at the last day that I have learned so much more than they did in this event TNT Izmir was for 3 days which I and my friend Ufuk who is an IFMSA trainer both planned to train the attendants about communication skills, presentation skills, fund raising, facilitation, team building and many other topics. It was rough and a little compacted but with energizers and exercises that we both planned it was fun too. We actually tried to mix fun and learning together and showed them that this is the way that they should run their future training sessions. We tried to show them and prepare them for every aspect that they might face during a training session. One of the most important parts of the TNTs is to make the new trainers feel like a family and to try to work together as a family in the future so after TNT sessions in the evenings there were social programs so that everyone could get to know each other better and to feel connected and I have to say Big thanks to the amazing OC (Ayshe, Kemel, Kivanc, Tugce, Deniz, Baris, Izgi and ‌) they made it so easy for everyone to feel at home. After TNT, There was sub regional training (SRT) which somehow is some kind of a test and the new trainers will give their own training session for the very first time. It was running for 2 days and there were 4 SRTs that they were about 4 people in each one and I tried to somehow make them work as a team and lead their group to a successful training session because team building and leadership was one of the most important topics we worked on in TNT days. Since it was my first time training new trainers I was feeling a little nervous about if they are going to do a good job or not but most of them did a great job and some of them really surprised me and I am very proud of them, I mean some of them were too nervous but it’s natural to be nervous on your first time and you should have seen me on my SRT J I was so nervous that kept my hand in my pocket all the time and Adam and Nesrine (my TNT trainers) kept blinking and pointing at me to somehow inform me to take my hand out of my pocket :D

IADS Magazine

To brief it, TNT Izmir was an extra ordinary opportunity not only for me since I learned a lot and made lots of new friends but for IADS too for receiving such talented new trainers. The whole program was a cooperation between IADS and IFMSA which was outstanding and we can expand our relations a lot more in the future. None of this would have happened if it wasn’t for Natalia Savkova the chairman of the training committee and I have to thank her again here for all her hard work and arranging all these programs and making the cooperation with IFMSA work. I can still smell the sea in Izmir Jso if you want to experience an amazing experience in your life; See you guys in the next TNTs. Article by Shayan Darvish
