INITIATIVE

VOLUNTEERING AROUND THE WORLD:

THE JAMAICAN EXPERIENCE…

P

articipating in an international voluntary project is an amazing opportunity for any dental student or dentist as it provides the opportunity to use clinical skills to help improve the lives of others across the world. It can be a life-changing experience and an awakening for many. Brush Up Jamaica and The Jamaica Association of Dental Surgery Students, along with the Jamaica Association of Public Dental Surgeons, hosted the Caribbean’s first International Dental Student Voluntary Project August 12th – 26th, 2013. Ninety (90%) of Jamaicans have little or no access to dental care and in some rural areas, the dentist to patient

ratio can be around 1:100,000. Jamaica was proud to bring dental students and young dentists from all over the world to join together to help provide persons in need with the dental care that they deserve. Sixteen (16) dental students and young dentists (from countries such as Romania, Slovenia, Poland, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, and Croatia) united to collaborate with 50 local dental students for Jamaica’s first IADS International Voluntary Project. Week 1 (Kingston, the capital of Jamaica) involved a lecture series focusing on Implantology, Atraumatic

IADS Magazine

Restorative Technique, Topics in Oral Surgery and Medical Emergencies, Dentistry in Jamaica, and Training Sessions for the outreach projects. Although the first week involved a lot of information, it could not be all work and no play. After every day of lecture, the team was rewarded with an excursion. Bob Marley is synonymous with Jamaica. His music is known globally and is recognized as one of the greatest’s musicians of all time. We had to make a trip to the Bob Marley Museum.

6

INITIATIVE The team visited a local craft market to get all their souvenirs to bring back for themselves and their families and friends. They also experienced the night life of Kingston (every night there was excitement!). On the last full day in Kingston, the enjoyed surfing at the beach and enjoying the cool island breeze.

At the end of the first week, we travelled three and a half hours to the island’s second largest city, Montego Bay. This is usually where all the tourists visit! The team stayed at Sunset Resort and Spa, all-inclusive resort with beach and waterpark access and all the food, drinks, and entertainment they could ever imagine! While enjoying the weekend before the long week of hard work, some accomplished climbing world’s famous Dunn’s River Falls in Ocho Rios. While others, relaxed at the hotel on the beach: kayaking, snorkelling, water sports and eating and drink their heart’s desires. The team was in heaven! Generously hosted by the Catherine Hall Stadium, the team performed free dental procedures for Jamaicans in the surrounding communities including cleanings, extractions, and ARTs.

After a long hard day at work everyday the team excitedly returned to Sunset Resort to relax on the beach, play volleyball, tennis and various sports, and enjoy the warmth of the beautiful island. After four days of creating many more smiles on the island, the team treated 465 patient including 147 extractions, 319 cleanings, 35 ARTs. IVP Jamaica is a great opportunity to unite persons from all over the world with the same cause to improve oral health access and care to those in need.

IADS Magazine

The following day, the team visited Devon House Great House, one of the country’s most celebrated historical landmark. It dates back to the mid-seventeenth century, when Jamaica was still a British Colony. Devon House is also known for its ice-cream, listed by the National Geographic Food Journey as the “Fourth Best Place in the World to Eat Ice Cream”. It is a must have when visiting Jamaica!

We are so excited to host IVP Jamaica 2014 – August/ September 2014!

CONGRESS

ISTANBUL 2013

IADS Magazine

THE 60TH IADS & YDW ANNUAL WORLD DENTAL CONGRESS

I

always loved organizing things. That’s why SimCity and strategy games like Rise of Nations were my favourites. That day was an ordinary summer day, I was surfing through the web when I got a call from the President of Turkish Dental Association Students Council (TURKDENTSIC), Mehmet Yildiz, proposing me the chairwoman position of an international students congress: 60th IADS & YDW 2013 Annual Meeting in Istanbul. Well, I had organized voluntary projects, meetings, a dental students ball and some parties before, but this was a whole new level of organization. Anyway, without hesitation I jumped onto it with excitement and therefore, the year of emotional rise and falls, sleeplessness and arguments with friends has officially started. I was the President of Istanbul Dental Chamber Students’ Association and the authorization of forming a Local

8

Organizing Committee was given to me by TDA. First, I chose my “wingman”, a.k.a the Coordinator of the LOC, Sina Saygili. Then together we formed 5 committees: Public Relations, Registration, Social, Finance and Technical. Each committee consisted of 2 people. Plus, we had 2 officers helping in communication. After some debations, we managed to pick 12 people. In our first meeting in January 2013, I told them everything about IADS meetings, social programme, invitation letters, registrations and some other things which even I didn’t know how to handle. IADS & YDW 2013 Annual Meeting in Istanbul was unique, as it was integrated with FDI 101st Annual Meeting and took place at the same time, in the same venue.

CONGRESS After our first meeting, we gathered in every 3 weeks and got things done step by step. The hardest part was to deal with finances. We set the registration fee as 320 Euro, but we had to pay 70 Euro to FDI for each student so that leaves us 250 Euro. This price included 4 nights accomodation, all the meals, social program and other expenses. The hotel fees skyrocketed because of the FDI Meeting with an expectation of 10,000 participants. We solved this problem by lowering our accomodation standards. We didn’t hire a 4 or 5 star hotel, but a guesthouse of Istanbul Technical University. But that brought us a more genuine environment, where people had after parties in their rooms after the social program, or spent some time together in the study room. We were getting more excited as the time passed by, and it flown very quickly. There we were, on 27th of August 2013, waiting for our guests at the airport. We had 70 international, 50 Turkish participants. Thanks to our skilled team we managed to get everyone safe and sound at the guesthouse. Each LOC member had walkie talkies and these gadgets saved our lives for real. We didn’t have to call or text each other all the time. On the first night we went to a restaurant called Ficcin in Taksim, the most famous area of İstanbul. There we had a nice dinner, our guests tasted samples from Turkish cuisine. After that, we went to a pub, where people met and got to know each other. 28th August was the first day of the congress, our participants had their free time to attend the FDI Meetings. FDI Congress

in Istanbul was taking place in a huge venue called Istanbul Congress Center (ICC). There were 3 floors full of meeting rooms and conference halls in various sizes. A lot of speakings, conferences, meetings were taking place at the same time. Also, there was a huge dental fair on the ground floor. Hundreds of dental companies participated in that dental fair. Once you went in, you got off with a thousand of samples in your hands. At first, LOC distributed everyone’s FDI badges, because if you didn’t have a badget, you couldn’t get into some halls. We met in front of ICC at 12:30 for lunch. Our lunch place was in a walking distance from there, however it was so hot that we were exhausted when we arrived. I realized now, that I literally couldn’t have any lunch, nor a proper dinner during the congress. It was like universe playing with us, creating a challenge in every step. Our lunch challenge was this: the owner of the restaurant weren’t accepting the deal we had. Yes, we had signed an official agreement with the manager of the restaurant. However the manager quit the job a few days ago, and now the owner was refusing the agreement, threatening us to not to serve anyone that day. We could go to the court and win the case, however we couldn’t do that with 120 hungry participants waiting. We agreed to pay some extra money, and finally the lunch was served. On the afternoon we had the SCORE Meeting, where ex-ISO Tatiana Vorovchenko and some LSOs and NSOs attended. At 16:30, we went back to the Guesthouse to change, and then 1 bus returned to ICC to attend the Opening Ceremony, and the other to the Secret Garden, where we would have Exchange Fair. We traveled by private tour buses during the congress. We had 3 buses, with the support of Sisli Municipality. One of the buses tire had a blowout when it was taking us back to the hotel. Yet again, it was another challenge but we managed to overcome it somehow. Exchange Fair is a traditional IADS event, where all the country delegates bring their national food and drinks and share them together. We had a table for each country. But Saudi Arabia didn’t need a table, they put their carpet on the floor and set up an Arabic corner. Northern Cyprus was giving away pens and notebooks alongside the drinks, Iran had a very nice

he purpose of making a joint meeting with FDI is to bridge young students and experienced dentists together, letting them learn from each other. Participants got to spend half of their 3 days in FDI Meetings, and the rest in IADS & YDW Meetings. There were, of course, some downsides. People may have not concentrated on FDI enough. In our first proposal we offered a 1-weekprogram which participants would have lots of time for both, however the congress was split in 2 and the second part took place in Italy so we only had 4 days.

CONGRESS table where you could taste beautiful food, everyone became a fan of Tunisia’s little hats, Indonesia had really interesting exotic food and keychains, Russia had some caviar and –of course- vodka, Rabee from Palestine was giving scarves, Poland’s enthusiastic delegate dear Magda painted her face in their country flag’s colours, Kazakhstan’s delegate Yana was looking pretty in her national dress, Czech girls took the level so high with tooth-shaped cookies and their drinking challenge called “3some”. As Turkish LOC, we all wore red-white outfits, matching with our flag. We had a great barbecue buffet during the Exchange Fair, and a nice view of Bosphorus. As the night went on, we played the summer hits and Turkish songs, during which we performed traditional Turkish dances with our friends from all over the world. After we returned to the guesthouse, we didn’t sleep until the after party ended.

IADS Magazine

29th of August started with the 9th IADS Lecture Contest&Poster Session. We had 4 jury members, 10 oral presentations, 7 posters. 5 participants presented their work on the first half. During the coffee break, the jury members assessed the posters, asked questions. On the second half, the other 5 participant made their presentations. Finally, before the lunch break the Jury announced the 1st, 2nd and 3rd

place of Oral Presentations and the winner of Poster Session. Presenters Murad Alrashdi, Camelia Dewi Hartanto and Magdalena Wilczak won a pair of dental loupes from UKLoupes and Ewalina Mielko won the Poster Session.

A

fter the lunch break, it was time for Young Dentists’ Worldwide Forum where 8 respectful dentists from all over the world gave lectures while Dr. Ingmar Dobberstein took the Moderator duty. The night program was really cool, and its not because we organized it, but the place is said to be the best nightclub of the country. Reina is located right next to Bosphorus, with an amazing view of Istanbul. First we had traditional Turkish kebabs at a restaurant and then, we offered 2 programs for our participants. The ones didn’t like night clubs enjoyed their shishas in Ortaköy, and the rest danced the night away at Reina. Meanwhile, we didn’t reveal anything to our participants, but we were very anxious about the next days big event: 1st IADS Dental Olympics. It was the first time that it has ever been organized, and its permanency relied on our success. But of course, we had another challenge! We ordered

30th of August was the big day: 1st Dental Olympics was taking place. Dental Olympics is a friendly competition which gave the possibility to dental students to compete in teams on the basis of their dental clinical skills. 8 teams composed of 3 dental students each competed in 6 rounds. 1st round was: Radiography Interpretation. 10 radiographic images reflected on the wall, the competitors were asked 10 questions about them. 2nd round was: suturing on a chicken skin, in which 1 competitor from each team tried to put decent stitches on the chicken skin. 3rd round was: soap modelling. 1 competitor from each team modelled an upper canine out of soap. 4th round was: orthodontic wire bending. 1 competitor bended the wire in a star shape. 5th and 6th rounds were performed on DentSim. Competitors opened a cavity and prepared a tooth for crown. All the works were evaluated by the Jury, and the winners were announced: 1st place-Northern Cyprus, 2nd Place-shared by 2 Turkish teams, 3rd Place-Iran. The winners received their gifts from 3M, a big box contained a lot of dental materials. On the afternoon, we took our guests to the old city center, Sultanahmet. There, our guests got to see the Topkapı Palace, Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Basilica Cistern and Grand Bazaar.

CONGRESS

On the 31st of August, it was time to leave. Not only for the participants, but me, Sina and Mehmet. We said goodbye to our guests and left for our flight to the Italian Part of 60th IADS & YDW Annual Congress. When I saw Gaetano –chairman of the Italian Part- in Bari, I thought my part has finished while his part was just starting and wished him good luck. 60th IADS & YDW Annual Congress was a milestone for me, I learned so much, gained skills and experience, met a lot of new friends and with the help of that experience, I was elected as the IADS International Scientific Officer in General Assembly in Italy. Of course there were some mistakes we did, but thanks to our tolerant guests, I think we made them up. I would like to thank everyone supported us throughout this journey, our dear participants, IADS & YDW ExCos, my beloved LOC, Sina, Mehmet, TDA Officials and my family and friends. From now on, IADS Meetings are a family gathering for me rather than a congress. I am looking forward for IADS MYM Tunisia, and wish good luck to the LOC. Don’t forget, the universe is preparing a few challenges for you :)

2 DentSim simulators with the support of our sponsor. The simulators were like dental phantom heads we use in preclinics, but had an electronic system so it could evaluate the work itself. 2 categories of Dental Olympics would be performed on them, however we got a call, telling us that our DentSims were stuck in customs. After some efforts put by Turkish Dental Association officials it was pulled out from customs and was on its way from Ankara to Istanbul, but there was a 5 hours delay! That means we may not have enough time for the set up. This would be a disaster, so we crossed our fingers and waited. Thankfully, it arrived at night and managed to be set up very early in the next morning.

We kept the best social night for last. It was the night for Bosphorus Trip. Istanbul is the meeting point of 2 continents: Asia and Europe, so has a strait in the middle. 2 continents are connected with 2 bridges. Bosphorus offers a great view on the day, but a greater one at nights. With all the colour-changing lights on the bridges, it amazed not only our guests but us. We had a private boat, which took us on a 4 hours long trip. After the nice dinner we went upstairs, to open air. I gave a speech and expressed my sincere thanks to IADS ExCo, YDW President and LOC members. After that we cut our cake and the music has started. There was a belly dancer show, unlimited drinks and a great atmosphere surrounded by friends, and I couldn’t have asked for more. At 12:00 the boat dropped us back at the shore but we continued the night at Supper Club. As the end of the night getting closer, I realized that my dream, 8 months of work is coming to an end. I was sad, an experience that one can live once in a lifetime has become to an end. Also I was happy, all that stress finished and the whole congress came out well.

RESEARCH

A MONTH OF RESEARCH INTERENSHIP IN RUSSIA

A

fter one month of research internship in the country of snow weather, Russia. I’m back again in the country of deserts whether, Saudi Arabia. It was a great month full of adventure, new experience, socialization, science, research and clinical training. On One hand, I had a chance to train and practice dentistry works in a different horizon other than my country of citizenship. It is completely different in all the way of estimation; not only the works, but it is different in the infrastructure of the hospital and university, system of work, behavior of doctor and patient toward each other and the facilities of hospital in regards to the material and equipment. On the other hand, I had a chance to see the real Russia not like what we are hearing on media. I have stayed with Russian Homestay family during my internship; they were awesome family and so friendly, they like foreign students and introducing me traditional Russian food every day, which is actually very delicious!

IADS Magazine

On the social part, I had a chance to visit many popular cities in Russia like Moscow, Saint–Petersburg and the Islamic republic, Kazan City. During my stay, Russian medical and dental intern were surrounding me all the time and trying to make my stay more comfortable. From the bottom of my heart, thanks to all of them. A special thank goes to Russian Association of Dental Students and Young Dentist, for the high care that they are taking while I was in all the different cities. You guys are really wonderful and thanks for the moment that gathered me with you. My Best Regards, Murad Alrsheedi

he 60th IADS & YDW Annual Dental Congress took place on the 4th of September in Giovinazzo(Italy), the global event organized by the IADS – International Association of Dental Student and the YDW Young Dentist Worldwide, the international federations that comprise national dental student and yound dentists organizatinos. An united Italian Organizing Committee that has seen an efficient cooperation between the AISO local associations throughout Italy, especially Catholic Rome, Naples and Foggia, resulted in a congress with 40 participating nations and 200 delegates from all over the world! The main topics dealt with all areas of dentistry, from studies of stem cells contained in the pulp, implantology and orthodontics. Particular attention was also given to prophylaxis activities, elementary school children participated in a program which taught a proper oral hygiene.

The scientific part was not the only star of this Congress ! A burning exchange of culture, traditions and without metaphors, tastes, were the key points of each day. In particular, the evening of the 1st September was reserved for a unique and traditional event of this Congress : the fair exchange. Every nation wore the traditional clothing and tables were set up with the typical products of each country (you should try camel milk ! ) It was a trip around the world in five days ! The participants, linked by a deep almost family relationship, once they get to say goodbye, they try what we call the «IADS Flu», a shared sense of nostalgia. A special thank for the one who supported the creation of this Congress, is addressed to the President of the Congress, Prof. Lorenzo Lo Muzio, Director of the Clinical and Experimental

Medicine Department and President of the Degree Course in Dentistry and Dental Implants of “University of Foggia”, Foggia AIO and its President, Prof. Giacomo La Torretta; to the Sponsors for their generous support and for offering their trust in such a youth project.

MEETING

IADS friends: APDSA

“Co-operation comes from friendship, friendship comes from trust, and trust comes from kind-heartedness.” Dalai Lama

F IADS Magazine

or the 40th time, Asia Pacific Dental Students Association (APDSA) organized the Annual meeting and this time University of indonesia became the Congress Committee and made it happen in paradise island, Bali. IADS was invited to renew and improve the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between IADS and APDSA. I was really honored to represent IADS at such great congress like 40th APDSA Meeting. And personally it was my first APDSA meeting that turned into unforgetable experience. Since the arrival at the first day, the Congress Committee worked really hard to manage the transportation for all Participants from the airport. That i realized the number of participants must be Great as always. The participants of the meeting are coming from 10 countries such as South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Philipine, Indonesia, New Zealand, Hongkong, Taiwan, Cambodia and Singapore. Among the hundreds of new faces, i had seen the old friends from previous IADS Congress i met in both India and Romania. The Attendees were not only the students and dental association delegates but also the member of APDSA Alumni members.

APDSA MEETING BALI INDONESIA

The first day was opened by special welcoming dinner with food festival, flag dance and of course beautiful tari kecak performed by the talented local high school students. There were also presentation on how APDSA was formed by the some founder of APDSA. It was really good to take a look at the past that IADS inspired the foundation of APDSA 40 years ago. The better thing to know was that how good APDSA evolved by achieving the goals to unite Asia Pacific dental students by providing the meeting and some programs. The second day was assigned for Scientific Lectures from wellknown speakers coming from Asia region that takes place in every annual meeting of APDSA. This activity helped students update their dental knowledge to be applied in their clinical life. The lectures finished before the lunch break. The day continued to City Tour. All participants went to see the Monkey Forest in Ubud. Some were afraid and some were excited to tease the monkeys and take the picture with them. The next stop was Goa Gajah, a sacred cave whose Hindus Gods sculpture carved on its stone side. This cave amazed everyone by the

masterpiece exposure of nature and human artcraft. Goa Gajah was not the last stop that day. We still had to visit Ubud art and Souvenirs centers and Painting Gallery. The day was about to fall and this time, all participants moved to enjoy the balinese special dinner. After the dinner, we were all going back to the hotel. And some delegates were preparing for general assembly to discuss about developments of APDSA through a year and future plan for the program improvement. General assembly of APDSA was opened by the reports of all EXCO members. The representatives of IDEM Singapore was also attending to promote their leadership program among the delegates. After the IDEM presentation, all delegates welcomed me to perform IADS presentation. I brought the IADS and Dental Students’ Research (DSR) Journal introduction before signing the MoU on behalf of IADS. The main collaboration between IADS-APDSA was particularly on Scientific program partnership in which all APDSA Scientific Research Competition papers can be published by Dental Students Research’ Journal of IADS. At

MEETING The next day was filled with Scientific Research Competition in which the students presented their scientific works by oral presentation and poster. After lunch, everybody got ready for another social program which is Kecak Dance Class. all participants were divided into some groups and would learn together and perform the dance in group that competed to be the best. When all groups finished their dance performance. All participants were enjoying the view of Sunset and Dinner in mesmerizing place, Tanah Lot. After getting back to the hotel, all delegates continued the general assembly and finished the election of the next period of leadership. The day was closed by party and everyone loved it. Here is the new structure of APDSA exco. The last day was designed for an optional tour. Hence all participants could choose where they would love to see and do whether the amazing water sport at Tanjung Benoa, Bali Safari or stunning Bedugul temple. After the

Participants, Congress Committee and Graduates Club were all in their national costumes. What captivated me was there were some participants made it to costume play. At the farewell party, the participants must perform something that represent their countries. This performance would be scored and the best one would bring the award home. It was Great night that i felt a time travel performance From traditional dance

and choir performance to Korean Pop Gangnam Dance. The Congress Committee also brought a west-to-East Indonesian performance at the end of the party. The immediate Promotion of APDSA Mid Year Meeting South Korea and Annual Congress Cambodia 2014 was also displayed. I would deliver my gratitude to old and new APDSA Executive Committee members and also all Congress Committee members for welcoming me very warmly and also for an amazing congress i experienced. I left my heart in Bali like every participants did. I would also love to invite everyone to join 61st Annual World Dental Congress of IADS and YDW in Yogyakarta and Bali next Summer. Get ready! Cause we are preparing the awesome programs for all of you here. Indonesia welcomes you next summer.

AN INTERVIEW WITH PROF LOH HONG SAI Introduce yourself and tell me about your APDSA career and how it started and how it has been for you. My name is Dr Loh Hong Sai: Former Dean, Faculty of Dentistry, National University of Singapore and Professor and Head, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Currently, I am a part-time consultant specialist in private practice. My first exposure to APDSA was in 1971, when I was a Final Year student, and was the secretary for the local organizing committee. Singapore hosted its 3rd congress then. It was an enriching and endearing experience for me that lasted 4 decades till today! I immediately followed up with my first overseas congress in 1972 as a fresh graduate to Indonesia in 1972.Ever since, I had attended most of the congresses of APDSA till today. It’s like a family reunion, meeting friends and promising younger generations of students. I have a 42 year history with APDSA!

IADS Magazine

Can you tell me a short introduction of APDSA Alumnus Forum? There is a group of ardent followers of APDSA from previous participation. And they attended our congresses whenever possible, and slowly there is a strong group of us from Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan and Singapore. We formed APAL (APDSA Alumni) – and would gather at APDSA congress or meet in each other’s countries for social and scientific purposes. The most active senior alumnus is Dr Nakajima from Japan, who is from APDSA 1969. At the recent congress in Indonesia (2013), we reformed APAL to APDSA Graduate Club – to inject more vibrant leadership and connectivity amongst ourselves. We hope to have a formal session within the program of APDSA dedicated to the needs of graduates eg. Discussions on clinical cases; postgraduate opportunities etc.

How you collect everyone in APDSA alumnus Forum? Hopefully, with the dynamism of this new group of younger graduates and the current social media available, we are able to connect and communicate more effectively with each other. Also, we wish to be hyper-linked with the APDSA website as well.

We met and talked about IADS a bit. Can you tell me the history between APDSA and IADS in the past? How past IADS meeting inspired APDSA foundation? IADS is an older organization, but with little impact in the Asia Pacific region. It is mostly European based due to the leadership coming from that region. However, I am sure APDSA is keen to collaborate with IADS for forging closer ties and activities. Once in 1986, Singapore hosted both the APDSA and IADS congresses together.

Do you have suggestions or advice for IADS and Young Dentist Worldwide (Alumnus Forum of IADS)? Well, IADS can form 5 regional divisions or regions : 1. North America and Canada 2. South Americas 3. Asia Pacific (APDSA) 4. Europe. 5. Middle East and Africa Then, IADS should make sure that its congresses rotate among these divisions. In that way, students would be internationally exposed. Also, you can link up with the equivalent organizations from FDI or such for support and advice.

INITIATIVE

DRAW A SMILE IN GAZA... Palestinian Association of Dental Students – Gaza local committee The PADS Gaza local committee prophylaxis team had celebrated the oral health awareness in the AL-Amal Institute of Orphans from Gaza on 21-1-2014. On that particular day it organized a prophylaxis course for children aged between 8 to 14 years old. At first the volunteers talked with the boys and girls about oral hygine, and asked them who knows how to brush their teeth, a lot of children being already aware of how to do it and knew it is very imporant. Our focus was centered around explaining to children children how to brush their teeth by showing them the best way to do it on models and also on a video demonstration. Later, the children had to show the technique they use on the models, this way we could correct them in doing it the right way.

REPORT

A JOURNEY INTO THE ITALIAN DENTISTRY

I IADS Magazine

t was September 2013 when I was finding myself in the position of taking the final last exams in the dental school, studying hard and knowing that after my graduation exams a new life commences. A new life which is called carreer and it’s future

success depends on our experiences, our abilities and of our entire vision upon the dentistry field. That’s when I decided to get ready my luggage and depart for a several months new dental experience in the marvelous country of Italy, at the Dentalnarco clinic in Milan.

procedures. After several weeks, I was invited to participate as well in the research clinical studies led by the clinic’s doctors and that meant spending all my free time reading and making analysis of countless articles mainly in the field of implantology.

Upon arrival, I was met by wonderful people who have welcomed me warmly and decided to open their hearts and share their knowledge with this newly bred young doctor who was ready to absorb everything and always. I was lodged nearby the clinic with one of the leading doctors and my Italian dental experience was ready to begin.

My usual day was starting at 9 in the morning and the schedule was decided by the patient’s appointements, and that meant staying in the clinic until 7 or even 8 PM. During some breaks I was grabbing a book or an article, and It was the perfect time for me to put questions and receive an immediate answer from the very experienced doctors of the clinic. The clinical spent hours were an excellent opportunity for me to finally experience the latest prothetic technologies such as the use of disilicate crowns,

The main aim of my presence at the clinic was to learn through assisting, hands-on(s) and being the second hand in all the prosthetic and surgical

total zirconia, veneers, digital impression and how to manage the best esthetic outcome in various regions. Two days a week I was with my entire presence and spirit in the surgery room where implants’ insertion together with all the additional augmentation procedures were performed. I had the chance to be a member of the surgery team which was performing techniques such as computer-guided implantology, different sinus lift methods and vertical/horizontal ridge augmentation.

O

ne of the best experience for me were the hands-on, as I had the opportunity to use and learn the latest rotary endodontic systems and their filling equivalent new techniques. I had the ability to improve my prosthetics skills in preparations for the latest crown types as well as to improve my protocols by adding very useful advices. As I believe esthetics is a prerequisite for the modern dentistry, I had the possibility to get trained in techniques such as wax-up and learning how to do a perfect morphology in basic restaurative procedures, something which oftenly forgotten

My general opinion is that Italy is a great country for dentistry, as in a radius of 200 km you have the chance to learn from the best and worldwide renowned dentists in their field. The

dentistry I had the chance to experience was top level an I consider myself blessed to have had such an opportunity. Therefore I would like to thank very much Dr. Gian Battista Greco, Professor Dr. Danilo Di Stefano, Dr. Francesco Riboli, Dr. Laura Ronchi and Dr. Nunzio Greco for all the patience and support. I had my best several months of my life not only in terms of dentistry, but also due to the best food&wines in the world and the great people I met. At the end of the internship I made my luggage and I found out it being much heavier, and it wasn’t about the souveniers, it was because of all my new experiences, knowledge and interactions which definetly shall help me a lot in the incoming career. Grazie mille, Italia!

by the nowadays dentists. Fortunatly I had the possibility to do the hands-on almost every day, as the clinic itself was providing all the needed materials and support. Also, as part of my internship I was invited to participate at the Congress of the Accademia Italiana di Odontoiatria Protesica in Bologna, where I could listen and learn from renowned prostheticians of the world such as Dr. Sidney Kina, Dr. Ken Malament, Dr. Carlo Monaco, Dr. Mauro Fradeani, which convinced me that Italy is indeed one of the most important worldwide centers when it comes to prosthetics.

Pavel Scarlat is the President of the International Association of Dental Students (IADS) and has been involved in the mangement of dental student projects for the last 5 years. He is a recent graduate of the UMF Craiova, Faculty of Dentistry and is currently starting his career as a Dentist in Romania.
