President's Note Dear Dental Students,
Dentistry is always promoted to be a field that gives treatment action, fixes the problems and focus on practising in the clinic. In any of your professional career dentistry is also a field based on health profession, in which our first aim should be preventing any diseases from first place.
International Association of Dental Students working on this "promotion" of health care all around the world and one of the most important day for us is WOHD. Collaboration with the biggest dental organisation which is called FDI we are reaching as many children, students, people around the world to state the importance of oral hygiene, health care and all disease they might have.
Proper education leads us to proper behaviour, before we care about the treatment we should more focus on our friends, families and everyone who can contact us. Learning by doing is still one of the best ways of acting, so let's do it, teach everyone you can!
See you next year on WOHD!

Dr. Sina Saygılı President IADS
Chairman's Note Students Living Mouth Smart all around the world! Another amazing World Oral Health Day campaign has passed with student associations organizing events all over the world. This WOHD Booklet will give you a chance to read about these amazing events that our friends held in their countries.
The preparations for organizing the WOHD campaign include several steps such as contacting
Ave Põld Prophylaxis Committee Chairman
the FDI WOHD Team, sending out information and motivating our members to participate. But things cannot be done the same way every year- we need to be creative!
The biggest innovation regarding the campaign was done with the huge help from our Editorial Board. At the beginning of the year, they worked out a web platform- the IADS WOHD Portal. This was made to spread information about the WOHD, but also to facilitate uploading various plans, reports and photos by our members. I am looking forward to the Portal growing bigger and who knows, maybe one day becoming the IADS Prophylaxis Portal. Another important development would be to have NPOs (National Prophylaxis Officers) in each national association. This would help to create a stronger, well-structured network to work with in organising future projects.
WOHD is an international event with a good cause and huge global impact.
It is the one day a year when
we join together and campaign to educate people and raise awareness about oral health. Bearing this in mind, we also reached out to dental student organizations that were not members of IADS. As a very positive surprise, lots of countries from the African Dental Students’ Association (AfroDSA) were interested and participated for the first time ever organizing huge screenings and awareness campaigns in their region.
IADS received reports from student associations in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and South America. All together
WOHD events were organised in 28 countries by
dental students starting from one-day awareness
and screening projects and finishing with almost month-long national campaigns. Several of them were held to educate children, some were humanitarian projects (
Boko Haram victims by Nigerian students,
visiting favelas by students from Venezuela, educating
etc.). All of the events were simply amazing and heart-warming to
read about.
The IADS is very proud of all the active dental students who participated in WOHD. Thanks to your hard work and dedication we are moving towards a future with better (oral) health for all.

We decided to celebrate the WOHD by the entire month of March, because we thought that just one day wasn´t enough to raise awareness about oral health. During that time we made multiple activities, such as:
ACTIVITIES 1. Workshop of
Interpretation of a laboratory test. The speaker was an Internist.
2. "Coffee with experts":
a great free outdoor activity about oral health and endodontics. The
speakers were 3 endodontists, professors of our Faculty. This activity consisted of creating a nice ambience at the ground floor of our Faculty. We took this place and put some tables and chairs with a bunch of cups of coffee, a microphone and 3 professors who talk about a specific topic for 15 minutes each, During this time the students, other professors and even patients could ask anything they would like to know. We have this event each month, and everyone at our Faculty is pretty excited to participate, it´s really beautiful!
3. Activities
to bring dental and medical care to the most needed sectors of our city, such as La
Vega and Petare (which is the biggest "favela" of Latin America). We made the activity with the people of "Brigadas Azules" (An NPO) and "SOCIEM" (An association of Medical students). We attended more than 150 patients!

During the day, around 230 healthcare workers including medical students, doctors, residents, dentists, nutritionists, and nurses united to offer free medical services to close to 400 patients, locals and refugees, without any discrimination. Services included screening for diabetes and hypertension, free consultations by specialists, ophthalmology exam, dental checkups, pediatrics checkups, free blood tests, nutritionists’ one-on-one consultations and an awareness campaign against smoking, obesity and antibiotic resistance. Patients were then referred to the primary health care centres of the Ministry for follow up on their cases and receive their blood test results.

They showed correct methods of brushing teeth suitable for each age, played thematic games with children, answered the questions. Moreover, dental students and young dentists delivered educational lectures on oral health in a number of Moscow schools. Children from 9 to 12 years met lecturers with great interest. Thanks to sponsors every person that took part in the celebration of WOHD got pleasant gifts like toothpaste and brushes. Afterwards, the RADSYD initiated the photo contest that becomes a good annual tradition. Participants and volunteers were encouraged to post their photos with a smile in social nets. In the end of the day, a several randomly selected winners got some special presents. As oral health care is a believed concept rather than a routine action, the program targeted the primary school children for part one. Also during this event, we targeted teachers as they are one of the most influential factors for children especially in this age group so they can be a role model for them.
The first event:
was at Al-Khandak School in 15th Mar 2017 from 8a.m. to 12p.m.
The second event:
was in cooperation with Taibah Women Society for Social Development in Al-
Rashid Mega Mall in 24th of Mar 2017 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in order to increase platform of the promotion second part organized in the mall where we can target more variable age groups, socioeconomic status and families.
What makes
Let's Smile
different from other promotion programs? We tried to promote directly and
indirectly concepts that are not usually delivered in promotion programs such as:
general health affect oral health and vice versa dentist treat a patient as a whole, not as a hole explaining why we always emphasise that natural teeth are better than artificial ones educate parents and teachers not just about their oral health but also how they can care about child oral health and emphasis on their role in the oral health promotion as role models for children. 28
