World Oral Health Day – WOHD – is celebrated every year on the 20th

of March worldwide. It is an international day to celebrate the benefits of a healthy mouth and to promote worldwide awareness of the issues about oral health and the importance of looking after oral hygiene to all ages. It is a day for people to have fun; a day full of activities that would make us laugh, sing and smile. The aim of WOHD is to raise awareness and encourage individuals, families, communities and governments to take action and help reduce the global burden of oral disease.

Why is WOHD important?

WOHD is important because 90% of the world’s population will suffer from oral diseases in their lifetime. Many of them can be avoided with increased governmental, health association and society support and funding for awareness, prevention, detection and treatment programs. In addition, World Oral Health Day offers the dental and oral health community a platform for action to help reduce the global oral disease burden.

What is the theme for WOHD 2014?

The theme is “World Oral Health Day 2014, Celebrating Healthy Smiles”because having a healthy mouth is a cause for celebration! Our efforts will be on protecting the worldwide population’s teeth and mouth throughout life, from childhood to adulthood. International prophylaxis Officer: Dr.Murad Alrsheedi

IADS booklet on World Oral Health Day World Oral Health Day is truly emerging as the indispensable means to communicate messages about good oral health to decision makers and to practitioners of other medical disciplines. Most importantly, and despite constant advertising of oral health products on TV and the internet in many countries, members of the general public frequently see maintaining oral health as an option rather than an absolute necessity. World Oral Health Day provides an excellent opportunity to emphasise the importance of oral health and the crucial role it plays in general health. In 2014, World Oral Health Day was celebrated in 106 countries, a huge leap from 37 in 2013. Proportionally, the jump in student activities was about the same, from 12 in 2013 to 29 this year. Of course, that should be no surprise. World Oral Health Day is above all an opportunity to have fun ‘celebrating healthy smiles’. Oral health is a serious subject but being entertaining is sometimes a better way to communicate serious messages. Lectures and workshops have a role to play, of course, but are a less efficient way to raise awareness among the public! A brief read through this booklet will impress the reader with the wide variety of events organized by the world’s dental students on 20 March 2014, demonstrating both creativity and imagination as well as an evident strong sense of duty to better inform the public. Judging by the number of free dental check-ups and awareness raising booths set up, the special day also provided an important opportunity for students to supplement their studies with real-life experience close to the general public, not only those who visit the dentist frequently but also those who rarely do. I am particularly happy to read about the number of events targeting children: good oral health habits learned early in life are an excellent investment in a trouble-free future for teeth and can yield dividends later on by avoiding costly reconstructive work. Children also communicate their enthusiasm back to their families and can play an important role in educating their parents and siblings about the importance of a healthy mouth. It is also impressive to see how students themselves have taken full advantage of the media to publicize their events locally and nationally and get as many people as possible involved. Oral health promotion on local and national television is a very powerful communication tool. In addition, the younger generation of dentists is also very much educated about the huge potential of social media both to bring people to an event and to report it afterwards. So, in this brief message I would like to thank you, dental students of the world, for your commitment to World Oral Health Day 2014 and the time and effort your have invested in ensuring its success. I very much look forward to World Oral Health Day 2015, which promises to be even bigger!

Dear Colleagues, The oral health worldwide is in our hands today, as it is up to us and our actions to improve it. It is in the hands of the doctors who teach at the University, work in clinics and of students as well, as even though we are just climbing on the dentistry profession steps, we too can make a difference. This is the reason the International Association of Dental Students was glad to join for the second consecutive year the great initiative of FDI World Dental Federation, to celebrate World Oral Health Day on March 20th. Students around the world have gathered together, went to schools, public squares, orphanages, remote areas within their region and celebrated the betterment of Oral Health through prophylaxis activities designed to educate and advice the population. From Jamaica to Indonesia, from Italy to Saudi Arabia, many IADS member countries around the world have joined the initiative in 2014. Through their actions, they have set up an example and took the leadership in the student led prophylaxis activities to improve oral health. We would like to express our immense gratitude towards the participating organizations and towards FDI World Dental Federation for the great cooperation. Together, for a better oral health!

World Oral Health Day 2014: giving the gift of prevention Prevention is better than cure! Here at the prophylaxis committee, we are working toward the benefit of the community through awareness and prevention for better health. For the second time, International Association of Dental Students, in collaboration with FDI, participated in World Oral Health Day (WOHD) 2014. WOHD is a day that helps increase dental health through advocating prevention to the public, whereby dental care provider and students share their time, instruments and knowledge with local communities. This year, 27 countries from 4 different continents were present, including Sudan, Egypt, Oman, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Italy, Serbia, Jamaica, Palestine, Chile, Turkey, Hungary, Montenegro, Czech Republic, Armenia, Slovenia, India, Libya, Nepal, Tunis, UAE, Romania, Bulgaria, Iran, Mexico and Russia. In each of these countries, dental students worked with communities to educate the public on good oral health and to distribute dentifrices. Moreover, two competitions were organized for the purpose of supporting the country activities in this day: the first one was best WOHD photo, and the second one was the best dental student organization activities. These two competitions were sponsored by FDI. The 2014 WOHD was a huge success. According to FDI statistics, 106 countries celebrated that day, and nearly third of their celebration were led by student organization 27 of them are students’ organization. We are thrilled that students are playing such an important role in the society. This event was the result of hard work and collaboration. I would like to thank FDI for their tremendous support to IADS, a partnership has lasted for long time in order to raise oral health in the world. A word of thanks goes to my team in 27 countries “ the national prophylaxis officers ‘’ who worked all together from different places to make this day possible. I couldn’t have do it without them. I am looking forward to extending this collaboration for WOHD 2015 and involving the entire IADS country members.

Sudanese Association of Dental Students (SADS)

Sudanese association of dental students celebrated the WOHD14 in a week as one day was not enough. And we wanted to make it a memorable for all Sudan. We worked hard covering a large area and targeting people of different ages and backgrounds. Our team consisted of dedicated dentists and students well trained and aware of the huge responsibility of spreading health education. On 20th of March 2014 the celebration took place in three different areas:

ABC language school:

A whole day was full of educating and applying the right way of brushing, answering the children’s questions and listening to their opinions. The most adorable and existed part was that the children were preparing a models of carving from the incisors to molars, they have learned how to carve it only from YOU TUBE!

Reformatory:

We chose it as it’s closed from the outside community, and teenagers there haven’t any knowledge about oral hygiene and have never been to a dentist before. That’s why we planned to make a free medical day for them. And to break the usual routine for them we had entertainment program as well.

AL-Waha Mall:

AL-Waha mall was a very productive and rewarding activity where we had an opportunity to share dental information with the wonderful Sudanese people who were very eager to learn and know more . There was free dental examination and referring unit that was opened to anyone who wanted his oral health to be checked.

Italian Association of Dental Students (AISO)

“It’s day for people to have fun!” is the slogan of the campaign on oral wealth week, which took place in Capitanata from the 15th to the 23th of March. This event has been strongly supported and sponsored by the University of Foggia in collaboration with the Student Association Area Nuova, AISO (Italian Association of Dental Students) and AIO (Italian Association of Dentists). Its meticulous and detailed organization has presented theoretical and practical work in every single day, a common thread with its cornerstone on the 20th of March, the World Oral Health Day. This fruitful week has highlighted that the 90% of the world population suffers from diseases related to oral cavity. All these diseases are simply avoidable with greater attention on the part of political and health institutions or of private or social individuals for the awareness, prevention and creation of specific programs of treatment, offering a platform for action to help the dissemination of simple concepts, but at the same time valuable for our health. The opening ceremony held on 15th March, was attended by the major representatives at the University of Foggia, including the Director of Dental Clinic, as well as the Director of the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, Prof. Lorenzo Lo Muzio, as well representatives of various associations, such as dr. Pavel Scarlat, President IADS, Carlo Caponio, President AISO Foggia, Victor Luca Palumbo, Foreign Relations Representative National AISO, dr. Giacomo La Torretta, regional President of Puglia AIO, who officially started at the event. In addition, as mentioned earlier, the most beautiful activity of this week was played on Thursday 20th March, when the smiles, the ideas and the ballons of elementary classes of ‘Catalano-Moscati’ and ‘San Giuseppe’ illuminated the dental clinic. For this reason, in accordance with the theme of ‘World

Oral Health Day 2014’, pupils with took part, with Dr. Michael Saad, to a meeting in order to enhance the importance and the right way in brushing our teeth. They highlighted the health of our mouth that at any age, young and old, allows us to eat, smile, kiss or whistle. This campaign has not been only addressed to children but also to all population. On Saturday and Sunday respectively to Foggia and Cerignola teachers and students were in the square with a stand to educate population to oral hygiene. Moreover, they were distributed small gadget for oral hygiene kindly offer by the sponsor. According to the quote of the writer Mordecai Richler ‘it takes seventytwo muscles to do the pout but only twelve to smile’, we don’t let our mouth worries for some pain too. It represents the vehicle between our essence and the outside world.

The Hungarian Association of Dental Students (HADS) 22

Thanks to IADS and FDI on the 20th March 2014, Hungary celebrated the day of healthy smiles for the second time. Our preparations started two months before the big event. Although we had difficulties in the beginning, we managed to find the perfect venue and support for the event. The Hungarian Association of Dental Students, Semmelweis University Faculty of Dentistry, with 40 devoted students made this event possible in Budapest. Together with the Division of Oral Prophylaxis of the Department of Community Dentistry we organized a health day. In addition to that, we organized a street action to bring oral health awareness closer to people. The main aim was to rise attention to oral cancer and the risk factors as Hungary has the highest prevalence of oral cancer worldwide. Because of that we focused on the improvement of oral hygiene, reduction of smoking, and alcohol abuse. We had individual consulting with the people interested, and we tried to answer their questions regarding dentistry, oral hygiene, and other health matters. A month before the event, our association started to gather the enthusiastic students from all years for this event. A week before the event we started the preparations with the students involved. We started WOHD early in the morning with the decoration of the lecture hall of the Department of Community Dentistry. We used transparent and posters drawn by dentistry students. We played a little with the official logo shaping it to our national colors and making the face unhappy with smoking. In the lecture hall from 9 a.m. until 16 p.m we were showing to the people the proper technique of tooth brushing, flossing, cleaning of dentures, and we gave useful information to those who wore braces or had prosthesis. The participants who had

a risk of oral cancer were sent to Dr. Prof. Gรกbor Nagy who examined them. There was a wide range of participants in age and social background, which made this day very interesting and colorful for both parties. Thanks to the head of the department Dr. Peter Kivovics associate professor we had a great media attention and we reached awareness of WOHD on a national level in Hungary. We had interviews with television, radio and newspapers. We would like to use this opportunity to thank Dr. Peter Kivovics for supporting our cause, and providing us with the venue. In the afternoon we went out to the streets of the centre of Budapest, and gave oral hygene advice to pedestrians. At first people were a little suspicious about our demonstration, but shortly with our smiles, we convinced them to take part in our mini questionaire, and the brave ones got little gifts from us (dental floss, WOHD bracelets, and toothpastes). We can not put our feelings in words about this day, as we had such an amazing time. We reached 400 persons during this day. Next year we hope to increase the activity by involving all dental schools of Hungary in WOHD. Also we would like to expand our activites by visiting schools, kindergartens and retirement homes too, as we usually do on our prophylaxis events.

Bulgari Dental Students Association (BDSA)

Our goal was to make this day known to everybody, because our oral health is one of the most important things. So it has begun, our members were really well prepared. They talked to the National Dentist Newspaper to write an article about WOHD. Also we talked with 3 schools for permission to educate the young students and explain them the importance of the oral health. We started our campaign early in the morning with the students at 8 am. We had to prepare a short presentation about oral health and the proper brushing of teeth. After the presentation we asked the students, who were very enthusiastic some questions and rewarded the winners. This Happened in 2 schools in Sofia and one school in Troyan, where one of our members wanted to present WOHD to the children in his hometown and his old teacher in high school. In the end of each session we have the students presents, sponsored by Lacalut, which were Tooth paste, toothbrush and a key holder in the form of a tooth. Also The Sofia Dental Meeting association and their members helped us with sponsoring our posters and flyers. And each of the doctors told their patients what day is 20th of March. We are happy to announce that we informed more than 5000 people in Bulgaria that it is WOHD and educated some of them to have their mouth properly taken care of.

We would like to thank FDI for the bracelets that they sent us for our members who participated and IADS .

Early Smiles Campaign - University of Sharjah Dental Students’ Association

As a way to celebrate world oral health day, University of Sharjah Dental Students’ Association held a dental awareness campaign in Rosary Primary School in Sharjah, UAE. The target for this event were children in Grade 2, who are at an age old enough to grasp the concepts of oral health, and young enough to effectively modify their already established habits of oral hygiene.

We arrived to the school early in the morning with a full day planned ahead. The school›s theatre was filled with 150 children, and we presented to them educational videos and slideshows about oral hygiene, brushing techniques, good diet habits and general information about teeth and health. We then held an interactive session, allowing them to ask questions related to oral health. We concentrated on giving them a good impression of dentists, since most of them admitted to be afraid of dentists.

The children were then divided into five classrooms, and we distributed ourselves among them. We used disclosing agents to identify the location of plaque, had a group brushing competition, showed them how to correctly brush their teeth, and gave them pamphlets and brochures to give to their parents so they can make sure their children maintain proper oral hygiene. We designed posters as well to be hung in every classroom and in the hallways of the school. Running parallel with the activities, interns were responsible for providing dental checkups for each child. Using the findings from the dental check ups, we contacted their guardians and advised them on the future dental needs of their children. The event was a great success and lots of fun for the children and our volunteers. We look forward to holding this event on a regular basis, in order to spread and improve dental awareness among the young population.

SSS Craiova

In the morning of 20th of March, SSS Craiova members got together, wish they`re hearts full of joy for the day they we`re going to spend. What they we`re going to do was something you cannot change : to receive nothing but kids smiles and appreciation and understanding from the highschool students. Just a little bit shy in the beginning because they we`re not sure about the kids receiving the surprise and the bigger students understand and apply their advises, they have left to “Nicolae Romanescu” school. But what to see, kids were running in the school yard, smiling and laughing. As soon as they have seen the guests, very kindly saluted and went all together to the ceremony room.

Even if the small ones were curious about the presents packed in the bags, they sat quietly in their desks and waited the presentation. Our colleague, Mihaela, started a discussion about “The Dentist”. Kids reacted in different ways… some of them more scared than the others. Until the end of the presentation they have taught the kids that they have no reason to fear, because “The Dentist” is their friend.
