CITY & BEACH

ENGLISH

alicante city & beach Alicante is a medium-sized city on the east coast of Spain, bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, and capital of the wellknown Costa Blanca, where internationally renowned towns such as Benidorm, Calpe, Jávea and Altea among others are located. Being a Mediterranean city bestows Alicante with its own character and climatic characteristics which, combined with its beaches and its natural treasures and historical heritage, have turned it into one of the main tourist destinations in Spain, and even Europe. It enjoys an average annual temperature of more than 18ºC and more than 3,000 hours of sun per year, with mild winters and hot summers that entice visitors to enjoy the sea and the city´s beaches.

Alicante is connected to the rest of the world via modern transport infrastructures. The Alicante-Elche International Airport connects with different Spanish cities, among which the most oustanding are Barcelona, Bilbao, Tenerife, Ibiza, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, Santiago de Compostela and Seville, as well as European cities such as Amsterdam, Belfast, Berlin, Birmingham, Bristol, Brussels, Copenhagen, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Edinburgh, Stockholm, Frankfurt, Geneva, Helsinki, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Milan, Moscow, Newcastle, Oslo and Paris, among others.

networks constantly bring new visitors. The city also has a large port that offers sports moorings.

Likewise, its bus station and High Speed train station, and its motorways and road

Alicante has always been able to adapt to changing times. An example of this is the

In its current location, Alicante’s roots go back to the era of Arab rule when, for reasons of defence, the town moved from the area known as Tossal de Manises, located 3 kilometres to the north of the city, to the area of Mount Benacantil, at the top of which the Santa Bárbara Castle was built. First of all, Vila Vella (Old Town) developed on the mountainside, and after the Christian conquest in 1247, it became Vila Nova (New Town).

fact that it has become the headquarters of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) . It boasts a comprehensive and varied selection of hotels, a wide variety of beaches and promenades, a vast range of options for shopping and enjoying outdoor sports and leisure, such as sailing and golf, as well as internationally renowned traditional dishes and festivities. Not to mention its strong tradition as a university city. Its present and its promising future blend with a past of intense history, which has left a perfectly visible mark in the numerous archaeological sites and in the museums dedicated to keeping this memory alive.

HOW TO GET TO ALICANTE The city of Alicante can be accessed by land, sea and air. Motorways, dual carriageways and roads connect it to the main cities of Spain and Europe. The city has a new bus terminal located beside the marina. The Alicante – Elche International Airport situated 10 minutes from the city centre, is one of the main means of accessing the city for visitors

arriving into Alicante, from both Spain and abroad. The train is another comfortable form of travelling to the capital of the Costa Blanca. The station is situated in the very heart of the city. There is also a highspeed connection -AVE- linking Madrid and Alicante in 2 hours. PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN THE CITY AND FROM ALICANTE Visiting the city by foot is comfortable and practical,

since the distances are short and it is easy to walk from one end of the city to the other. Nevertheless, Alicante has a modern public transport network: buses connecting the most important places of interest in the city and to the main towns in the province, as well as trams getting to San Juan beach, its metropolitan area, the University of Alicante and the main towns along the north coast of the province, such as Campello, Benidorm,

Altea and Dénia among others. The city also has a tourist bus service (Turibus) that follows a route with stops at the places of interest. Passengers can get on and off the bus as many times as they wish over the course of a day. There is a multilingual audio system equipped with digital sound in 6 languages and it also has an access platform for people with reduced mobility.

This gothic temple was built on the site of the Great Mosque, it has a single nave, without a cross shape, with side chapels located between the buttresses and a total of six bays. This building houses a highly valuable collection of documents and art, its oldest pieces being an incunabulum from the 13th century and a Valencian baroque organ from 1653. At the foot of the building’s main staircase is the so-called “Cota Cero”, the reference point from which the altitude of Spain’s various cities is measured in metres above sea level. On the ground floor of these municipal premises (building next to the Ayuntamiento), visitors can view the interesting archaeological remains on display under the heading of “Alicante, la ciudad descubierta” or “Alicante, the city unveiled”.

santa bárbara castle

Located on the top of the Mount Benacantil, at a height of 166 meters, is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain, with unbeatable views over the Bay of Alicante. The fortress is of Arabic origin, although hardly any original features from this period remain today. Nearly all of the city’s historical events have been directly linked with the castle and its defensive position, therefore making it the most important construction in the city. It was also used in more recent times as a prison during the Spanish Civil War. According to popular belief, Santa Bárbara Castle is so named because it was reconquered from the Moors on 4th December 1247, the feast day of Santa Bárbara, by

the then prince who was later to be King Alfonso X, ‘the Wise’.

These constructions respond to the new arts of war.

Currently there are four enclosures on different levels and from three different periods: Firstly, the highest part of the castle, known as El Macho. This is where the oldest remains of the castle can be found, since this was the site of the first settlement during medieval times.

Such is its significance that during the 20th century it was declared a Monument of Historic and Artistic Importance and a Site of Cultural Interest.

Further down we find the middle and the ancient fortification. The main outbuildings of the castle are located in these two areas. They were reformed and developed during the Modern Age, under the orders of King Felipe II. The fourth precinct contains the remains of the 18th century, located on the northern slope of the mount.

Here we can also find one of the most characteristic images of the city, a rock formation resembling a man’s profile on the south western slope, known as the Moor’s Face, which is best viewed from Postiguet Beach. Nowadays, the castle is the most visited monument in the city, thanks to the amount of institutional and cultural celebrations that are held here, and also due to the attraction of the stunning panoramic views that can be seen from all corners of the castle.

tabarca

The Island of Tabarca, situated 11 nautical miles from the city of Alicante, sets the standard among Alicante’s beaches. It is the only inhabited island in the Region of Valencia. The town is surrounded by walls which have been officially declared an Asset of Cultural Interest. The Island’s waters have been officially declared a Mediterranean Marine Reserve for their excellent quality and for the biodiversity of their flora and fauna. The Island of Tabarca is 1,800 metres long and measures up to 400 metres across. In the past, its shores were a refuge for Berber pirates and, in the 18th century, King Carlos III ordered a town to be built to house several Genoese families who had been rescued from the Tunisian city of Tabarka.

As well as its beach and the crystal clear waters of its coves, visitors can enjoy a unique choice of local dishes such as the well known Caldero, a type of fish soup, and also visit the island’s museum. GETTING THERE The trip to Tabarca Island can be made by the boats that leave regularly from the Alicante marina, opposite the Explanada de España promenade. sport The pleasant climate of Alicante welcomes you to practice a wide variety of physical activities all year round. It just depends on your hobbies and preferences.

You can visit the local attractions by bicycle, as the city has an extensive cycle path that runs through it from north to south. You can discover in a dynamic and fun way the most emblematic monuments, museums, beaches, the old town and the city centre. Undoubtedly, one of the most relevant events held in Alicante

in recent years is the Ocean Race competition, recognised as the most important sailing race in the world. Alicante was the start point in the last 4 editions, and the city has been chosen once again to be the departure port for the next two. These departures will take place in 2021 and 2025. If running is your favourite sport, Alicante is the best option. Being conceived as a tourist city, it has many pedestrian areas, large promenades and avenues both in the city centre and on the beaches.

parks and gardens Thanks to the city´s pleasant climate, visitors and locals alike can enjoy open air areas at any time of the year. Throughout the year there are workshops, entertainment, children’s theatre, puppet shows, etc. predominantly aimed at children and families.

LA ERETA PARK This park is located on the slopes of Mount Benacantil at the foot of the Santa Bárbara Castle, opposite El Postiguet beach. From here you can enjoy unbeatable views of the city and follow an interesting route from the summit down to the city’s old quarter.

EXPLANADA DE ESPAÑA This is one of the city’s emblems. It runs parallel to one of the port wharfs and is lined on both sides with rows of palm trees. The floor is decorated with 6,600,000 tricolour marble tiles forming a design with a characteristic wave effect mosaic.

EL PALMERAL PARK This is one of the most spectacular parks in the city, formed by a wooded area containing palm trees, ponds, lakes and artificial streams. It contains sports facilities and a cross-country cycling track,

as well as a pavilion where a regular programme of events is scheduled including activities, children’s theatre, puppet shows, etc. CANALEJAS It is one of the most traditional open spaces in Alicante. It has spectacular lush vegetation including several hundred-year old rubber plants measuring 20 metres high.

PLAZA DE GABRIEL MIRÓ This square honours the Alicante writer of the same name. Just a few metres from the Explanada and the seafront promenade, it has a monument in the form of a fountain and centenary trees with luxuriant foliage, creating a relaxed, pleasant atmosphere. Other parks and gardens worth visiting are: The Paseito Ramiro, the Panteón de Quijano, Portal de Elche or La Marjal in San Juan Beach.

festivals The yearly calendar is marked by numerous festivals. The joy of the city and its people is represented by the great variety of fiestas that leave the visitor with such a lasting impression. The chances are that one of Alicante’s many festivals will coincide with your stay. Hogueras de San Juan, Moors and Christians parades, Carnival, Holy Week, Santa Faz pilgrimage and Christmas are the highlights of the city’s festive calendar. HOGUERAS DE SAN JUAN (20th to 29th june) This is the city’s most important celebration, beginning on the 20th June and lasting until the 24th. It is a festival dedicated to fire, including events such as the proclamation (the Pregón), the setting up of the bonfires (the Plantà), the procession of the effigies (Cabalgata del Ninot), parades and processions in different neighbourhoods of the city and the main event on the 24th June, the feast day of Saint John the Baptist, when large satirical statues made of cardboard and wood are set alight.

Officially declared to be of International Tourist Interest, the Hogueras de San Juan include one of the most important bullfighting events in Spain. Once the main celebrations are over, there is a fireworks competition on Cocó beach at the far end of Postiguet beach, every night until the feast day of Saint Peter on 29th June. HOLY WEEK (March or April. Variable date) The Holy Week Easter celebrations start on Palm Sunday, giving way to a week of processions by around 30 guilds and brotherhoods. One of the most popular and emotive is the procession through the narrow, steep streets of the Santa Cruz neighbourhood on the Wednesday before Easter Sunday.

SANTA FAZ PILGRIMAGE

CRUCES DE MAYO

(March or April- second Thursday after Easter Sunday) On the second Thursday after Maundy Thursday the popular pilgrimage known as La Peregrina to the Santa Faz Monastery takes place. The Monastery is 5 kilometres from the centre of Alicante, and is where, according to tradition, the fabric that Verónica used to dry the face of Christ on the Way of the Cross is kept.

These festivities take place in the Santa Cruz district, which is located on the slopes of Mount Benacantil. Competitions take place where crosses are decorated with flowers and there are street performers, open air dances and games.

MOORS AND CHRISTIANS PARADES These fiestas are celebrated in different neighbourhoods of the city throughout the year. They commemorate, in a festive style, the battles fought between Christians and Muslims back in the 13th century to reconquer the lands of the province. Some of the city´s neighourhoods dedicate a few days to this festival. San Blas district Held during the second week of July Altozano district From 12th to 16th August

Other festivals in Alicante include, for example, the Porrate de San Antón, the festivals of San Roque (declared Traditional Festivals in 2004), the festivals in honour of the female patron saint “The Virgen del Remedio”, the festivals of Tabarca Island and the festival of Raval Roig district, among others.

gastronomy The local cuisine is undoubtedly one of the city’s most renowned tourist attractions. Alicante’s cuisine is typically Mediterranean. The history of Alicante, its geographical location, the climate and the fertility of its lands have provided an enormous richness and variety to the region’s food. “Alicante, Ciudad del Arroz” is the brand that represents the star dish of our gastronomy. Rice, the key ingredient of all of the region’s cuisine, plays a leading role in a huge variety of meals, although a wide range of typical ingredients of the Mediterranean diet are also used in the preparation of traditional recipes. When we mention Alicante´s rice dishes, we should also include ingredients such as the Nyora (sun-dried bell peppers) and garlic along with its characteristic combination of meats (mainly chicken), fish, (tuna, swordfish…) and seafood (prawns, langoustines,

mussels, cuttlefish, squid…). Arroz a banda, a rice dish with seafood, arroz caldoso, a brothy rice dish with seafood and the popular olleta rice dish with meat and vegetables, are also worthy of special mention. El caldero, a seafood stew, is a meal in itself and is the typical dish of Tabarca Island. It consists of rice stewed in a strong fish stock (monkfish, eel, mullet, red gunard…) with the fish then served as a second course and normally accompanied by a rich, fragrant garlic sauce (all i oli). The culinary choices don’t stop at these rice dishes; they continue to spread to other options that are equally appetising. Before sitting down for a meal, appetisers are the best thing to whet your appetite with nothing better than the traditional tapas and montaditos, small rolls with a variety of toppings, typical of this area, which combine meats and salted fish with vegetables and have become popular

throughout the rest of Spain. Cured salted fish is used as the main ingredient for making many types of salazones featuring products such as mojama (dried salted tuna), huevas (roe), ventresca de atún (tuna belly), the tonyina de sorra type of tuna, herring, etc, and which are served as appetisers. Alicante is also renowned for its savoury pastries known as cocas saladas topped with tuna (coca amb tonyina) or sardines, as well as its esmorzaret alacantí made with salted sardines, fried egg and nyora peppers. The Mediterranean Sea provides the freshest, best quality fish and shellfish and are a must for all visitors, such as the red shrimps from Alicante and the king prawns, crayfish, squid, red mullet, and many other types of seafood. For dessert there are more local products to enjoy, including aniseed rolls known as rollitos de anís, la coca

boba sponge cake, dates and dried fruits. Not forgetting the famous ice creams and the turrón de Jijona nougat or the delicious chocolate from the neighbouring town of Villajoyosa. The dinner table would not be complete in Alicante without wine. Dark full bodied reds, rosés and young whites made from grapes of the Monastrell, Vermeta or Garnacha varieties and el Fondillón, a worldfamous aged wine from Alicante. Alicante’s culinary variety is also demonstrated in the selection of different bars and restaurants throughout the city. From the great choice of restaurants on the Muelle de Levante wharf in the Marina and passing by the tapas bars on the famous Rambla de Méndez Núñez, not forgetting the restaurants serving homemade dishes in the Old Quarter, Castaños, San Francisco and surrouding streets, among others.

leisure and shopping

By day, the city’s shops and shopping centres offer a huge selection of goods, and many businesses specialise in different manufactured and handmade products to satisfy everyone’s needs. The main shopping streets can be found in the city centre, in particular Avenida Maisonnave, Avenida Alfonso X el Sabio and their surrounding streets. There are also several shopping centres, with a great selection of shops, spread out over the rest of the city (El Corte Inglés, Puerta de Alicante, Gran Vía, Parque Vistahermosa, Plaza Mar 2, and Torre Golf). There is an even wider choice of goods on offer if we include the fresh produce sold at the Mercado Central, as well as the different local markets which are held on Thursdays and Saturdays in different parts of the city (Benalúa, Babel,

Carolinas and Calle Teulada). The handicraft stalls on the famous Explanada promenade can also be added to this list as well as the popular antiques market held on Sundays in front of the Town Hall and which specialises in antiques and philately. San Francisco and Castaños streets are plenty of entertainment and food locals which are located near the Central Market building. These restaurants and pubs get crowded, especially on Fridays and Saturdays in the afternoon, when people go out for a walk with friends. This phenomenon has been named “Tardeo” and it is becoming very popular because of the warm climate of our city and the friendly character of the Alicante inhabitants. “La marcha alicantina, as Alicante’s nightlife is known, has

become one of the city’s main attractions in itself, as well as being a major contributor to the local economy. The choice of bars, pubs and nightclubs are mostly centred around the old quarter known locally as el Barrio, which includes the historic neighbourhoods of San Roque, Santa Cruz and Carmen and surroundings of Calle Castaños. There are more bars on the Muelle de Levante wharf next to the marina and also an area in Playa San Juan known as the Golf Course: Laseda Gastro Village and the Avenida Costa Blanca area. In addition to the wide choice of shops, Alicante has plenty of cultural offerings too, ranging from a good choice of traditional cinemas (such as the Navas and Ana cinemas) to the larger multiplex cinemas in the shopping centres, as well as

various exhibition centres and rooms with an extensive offer for visitors to enjoy. The Cigarreras cultural centre and the ADDA Auditorium are new additions to the city and are first class cultural venues, with multifunctional rooms to welcome different acts each month to satisfy the demands and tastes of a modern and dynamic city. The tourist bus, known as the Turibus, is very convenient for those who are only staying in the city for a short time and also for those who simply prefer the ease and comfort of such a service. You have many different options to visit Alicante. You can go for a walk, use a bike or make a segway tour. You can also organize a visit with a professional Tourist Guide who will show you the most emblematic places and will tell you the curiosities of our city.
