TRAX Towel
Frogger Golf, the leader in innovative, high performance, functional and fun golf accessories, has unveiled the next generation of golf towels with the debut of the TRAX Towel. The first golf towel to feature Catch Latch magnetic fastening technology, TRAX offers ultimate absorbency with a convenient system to quickly connect and disconnect the towel to a golf bag. TRAX, a 20” x 24” premium microfiber towel, is the ideal size, featuring a waffle design that is strong enough to clean clubs, but safe enough to wipe eye glasses, thanks to its gentle, non-abrasive and highly absorbent polyester material. What sets the TRAX Towel apart from other products in the golf marketplace is Catch Latch technology. While most golfers hang their towels on their bag, this typically provides little security from it falling off, and is less convenient when transporting the towel around the course. With Catch Latch, the TRAX Towel simply attaches and detaches via a dongle and receiver clamp that affixes to the top of any golf bag. The magnets in the dongle and receiver attract and self-align to quickly and securely connect. To detach the TRAX Towel and take it anywhere, simply pull the dongle straight out for access to the towel anywhere on the course. The TRAX towel comes in six bold colors, and features Frogger’s trademark frog in a dual TRAX pattern. TRAX has a suggested retail 8

One Man’s Trash Is Another Man’s Golf Course With a résumé that includes a magical transformation of an unsightly Boston landfill into the spectacular awardwinning Granite Links golf course, golf architect John Sanford has duplicated that feat with the completion of the long awaited Ferry Point golf course on the East River, in the Bronx, in New York City. The links-style course brings new life to a former landfill that has been an eyesore and dumping ground along the river since the 1960s. The vision and proposals for building a golf course

The formal name of the facility is the Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point. “Our experience at Granite Links put us in a nice position to get the Ferry Point project,” said Sanford, who also served as project manager. After a final inspection of the site with Mr. Nicklaus and Mr. Trump said “Jack and Donald were elated with the final product. We walked the entire golf course, start to finish, and I’m happy to say everyone was very pleased with not only with the design, but also with the conditioning.” Sanford said, “Jack was great to work with and Donald is very excited about the

Sanford also coordinated the work of seven consultants, engineers, landscape architects, and surveyors among others on the project. “It certainly has been challenging,” Sanford said of the Ferry Point project. “It’s been a marathon of high hurdles, but well worth it. The course is phenomenal, a true team effort.” Nicklaus and Sanford’s work on Ferry Point was honored by the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) with one of six 2013 Design Excellence Recognition awards. In addition to Ferry Point, Sanford Golf Design is busy working on renovations at The Naples Beach Resort , Banyan Cay Golf Resort and recently completed work at Kona Country Club on the Big Island in Hawaii; Kosaido CC outside Sapporo, Japan; and layout. New Life to Lost Courses When not renovating courses, the Places get as far away from golf as possible. Here they are near the Ngoragora Crater in Tanzania, May 2016
A golf club closed for two years
with 6 feet tall weeds growing over 170 acres – who wants that? Enter Bill Place and Su Lee, married owners of Ace Golf in Tampa, Florida. Now renovating their fourth failed golf club since 2005, the couple see opportunity, not demise, in the golf industry. Four-star Golf Digest Plantation Palms Golf Club in Land O’ Lakes closed in May 2014 following several years ownership by three American Indian partners, culminating with them fist fighting in the clubhouse. A perennial favorite Dave Harmon-designed Tampa Bay Golf course was shuttered, greens left to die, and vandals moved in. After many failed potential buyers, Plantation Pam’s HOA struck a deal with Place. The community would purchase a social membership for every one of their 821 homes for the next 5 years, amounting in a $625,000 investment to get their club and property values back. Place bought the club and is now renovating it with a re-open date in November. Bill Place and Su Lee don’t play golf. They met while working corporate jobs at GTE (now part of Verizon). Bill left his job in 1991 and two years later started their first Ace Golf driving range while Su kept the paycheck 12
and benefits coming. They both work together now, Su on Accounting/Finance and Bill on Marketing/Operations, about 10 feet apart in their Tampa home. In 2005, the couple bought Pebble Creek Golf Club, invested almost $2 million in renovations and returned the club to profitability. In 2010 and 2011, they did the same with Wentworth Golf Club and Crescent Oaks Country Club in Tarpon Springs. “Golf isn’t dying”, according to Place, “it’s just in need of a new paradigm”. We buy clubs cheap, invest heavily
in renovations, and add services to make them community centers with broader appeal. At Plantation Palms, for example, Place and Lee are building a miniature golf course, lighting and expanding the golf range, building a new 3,000 square foot wedding and events center, and adding a Mulligans Irish Pub (a concept they developed and now have at 2 of their other 3 clubs). “We start the kids in mini-golf, migrate them to junior golf lessons, and make them into golfers on the big course”, adds Place, “Life is Good!”

These are the first words that come to mind when I think of horses. Any horse. Here in the United States horses represent our beginnings, our pioneering spirit, what truly made America great. Rogers Brings Quail West into 21st Century The Preserve Course
here at Quail West Golf & Country Club will reopen early in the new year following a major renovation authored by architect Drew Rogers, who will take a short breather before inaugurating a similar overhaul of the club’s second 18, The Lakes Course, in the spring of 2017. In a way, Rogers’ work at The Preserve was standard fare: a complete
green and bunker renovation, irrigation replacement, conversion to Celebration Hybrid Bermudagrass, practice facility expansion and tee realignment. In another way, however, it’s a case study in how courses built during the development boom (1990-2005) are now being renovated and otherwise fine-tuned to address agronomic and playability issues specific to south Florida. “The wooden retaining wall, for example -- that familiar feature providing the hard edge between greens, tees and water hazards at so many south Florida courses -- is a good way to understand what happens to these courses over time,” Rogers says. “Putting surfaces are typically designed to be flush with the top of those walls, but 25-30 years of sand and thatch accumulation have raised up the greens and tees. In a region where top-dressing is a year-round discipline, a putting surface can rise a half-inch every 12 months.” According to Rogers, the former ultradwarf putting surfaces on The Preserve Course sat some 13 inches higher than the day the course opened for play, in 1992. For the golfer, the difference can be too gradual and subtle to notice, “perhaps until the 18
moment his or her ball rolls back off a green into the drink,” he says. Accordingly, Rogers completely overhauled all 18 green complexes at The Preserve. He also replaced those timber retaining walls with stacked capstone and reinstated the seamless relationship between putting surfaces, collars and hazards. As putting surfaces rise, the impact and drama of outlying green contours tend to be diminished -- so the architect pumped new life into these surrounds. Rogers understands the Florida golf scene as well as any architect working today. It one reason he’s so
busy here (his Toledo, Ohio-based JDR Design Group [www.jdrewrogers.com] is currently directing comprehensive renovation programs at The Club at Mirasol, Royal Poinciana GC, Miromar Lakes Beach and Golf Club, Wyndemere CC and Audubon CC). Both 18s at Quail West are credited to architect Arthur Hills, whose firm Rogers joined in 1992. Rogers subsequently oversaw design and construction of the Lakes Course. “You cringe a bit when you see consider how Florida courses were designed and built at that time,” said Rogers, who formed his own firm in 2010. “In the 1990s, for example, the style was to bring that rough right up to the green edge. The penalty for missing was severe. At the same time, folks who joined this club in the ‘90s are a little older today. This is the demographic movement taking place today at Quail West and so many other clubs in Florida. These greens today cannot feature so many penal edges, so many forced carries. They also need bailout areas with closely mowed chipping areas to allow more of a variety of flopping, chipping and putting recoveries.”

The Deep South Turf Expo– Bringing it Back to Biloxi in 2016! In the second year since inception, the Deep South Turf Expo is really coalescing. Last year was a great start, but the DSTE Board worked hard to listen to feedback from 2015’s attendees and vendors, and it reaped great dividends. Buddy Williams, with BWI Companies, exhibitor and sponsor reported, “The people I spoke with, vendors and patrons alike, thought it was very well organized and a worthy event at a good value. As a vendor I especially liked the format compared to last year. The golf tournament preparations (banners, signage, drink tickets and lunch) exceeded my expectations, but more importantly my managers were very impressed.” The Deep South comes together around the kernel of a great education program. Planning for this year’s educational program began back in 2015 with an education committee devoted to excellence. “From the get go, the board and educational advisors have worked together to make this a great show - but most important, we’ve tried to make it educational,” says Jay McCurdy, Ph.D. Assistant Professor and Turfgrass Extension Specialist at Mississippi State. “Scott McElroy (Auburn University), Bryan Unruh (University of Florida), and I sat down and hammered out a rough schedule more than a year ago. Different iterations were bounced around with our university colleagues to help determine what expertise best fit the topics we wanted to discuss, as well as what would optimize our workload. Tricia Roberts and Melanie
20
at the Biloxi Shuckers game Bonds have been tremendously helpful in optimizing time and topics. This year there were 20 speakers and more than 30 hours of education. We added two new breakout sessions - sod production and landscape. Both were well attended and strengthened the event. A great advantage of the combined efforts across state lines has been the ability to attract outside speakers with expertise beyond that of our local university faculty. Future events can only be successful with attendee feedback, so I encourage attendees and exhibitors to take the time to respond to online surveys - these are absolutely instrumental in
planning for next year’s Expo.” Following classes and lunch sponsored by Ladd’s and Ventrac at the Mississippi Coast Convention Center, the tradeshow opened. The Deep South Turf Expo tradeshow filled the exhibit hall and gave companies that provide services specifically for the Turfgrass industry an opportunity to feature products and services. Attendees were excited about the opportunity to view the extensive array of equipment and products. Everything from mowers, chemicals, irrigation parts and even a drone, to consultants and contractors was all present for one stop shopping. A series of “Tradeshow Talks” were offered in the afternoon at the rear of the Convention space. Dr. Scott McElroy kicked things off with a talk on “Hacking Putting Green Speed.” We also had Dr. Beth Guertal speak on “How Much Light is Your Turf Receiving” and “New Turfgrass Varieties by Dr. Wayne Philley. Jerry Pate Turf and Irrigation hosted the Grand Opening Reception of the tradeshow again this year and a silent auction offered the opportunity for some great deals and competitive bidding. While our first class education program and our trade show are the heart and soul of the DSTE, the extracurricular activities provide the opportunity to network and relax. Nearly 120 golfers teed off at the Preserve on Tuesday, October 11th. The Preserve staff did a great job of accommodating everyone and running the event smoothly. It was a fine day for golf on the beautiful course which is integrated within an 1,800 acre nature preserve. We are especially grateful to BWI Companies for sponsoring the tournament this year. Also, congratulations are in order for first place winners—the “Dream Team”, led by our host, Stephen Miles, CGCS and including Gib Fox, Tim Orton and Simon Parkin, CGCS. Other activities were held simultaneously on the opening Tuesday. DSTE President, Mr. Ken Edwards, CSFM, again hosted a sports field tour of Biloxi. Mr. Edwards included the Gulfport Sports Complex, Jones Park and the MGM Park, home of the Biloxi Shuckers, in the tour. Ken retired this year as Sports Field Manager for the Gulfport Sportsplex, a large municipal multi-use sports complex that he has been an integral part of since its construction in 1999. The Sportsplex is fortunate that Ken has trained as a replacement his son, Keaire Edwards. We hate to lose Ken, but after long service in the US Army and with the City of Gulfport, his retirement is well deserved. And Ken assures us that we can find him, “Cruisin the Coast,” and that he plans to be a part of the Deep South scene for many years to come! trols for sponsoring the event. Congratulations to the winners: Randy Mangnum, Justin Murray, and Jon Strauss. There was also a Past Presidents’ Reception for all the hosting organizations which include the Alabama GCSA, the Alabama Turfgrass Association, the Gulf Coast GCSA, the Louisiana/Mississippi GCSA and the Mississippi Turfgrass Association. The reception is hosted by Beard/Greenville Turf and Tractor. To cap off a wonderful day the event dinner, sponsored by Bayer and Harrells, Inc., was held at the MGM Park’s Shuckers Stadium, right across the street from our host hotel, the Beau Rivage. With a band and food stations there was plenty of fun, but most of the excitement was concentrated on the field. Aqua-Aid and Regal sponsored two teams of our members who played 4 innings of a softball game to provide entertainment. Aqua-Aid were the victors, but this could shape up into a grudge match in coming years. After the softball game there was a homerun derby, won by Toby Thornton, with runners up, Jeremy Stevens and L. J. Robinson Everyone wanted a shot at batting in the professional setting. It was remarked that many of the participants were as excited as a “bunch of kids!” Thanks to everyone who supported this event and made it a success. South Florida PGA Section/PGA Professional Championship Alan Morin
picked the perfect way to clinch his ninth South Florida PGA Player of the Year honors by winning the Section Championship. Morin shot a 4-under 68 Wednesday to win the South Florida PGA Section Championship for a record fifth time. The PGA Assistant Professional at The Falls Club of the Palm Beaches in Lake Worth won by three shots at 10-under 206 at Wyndemere Country Club (Green/White courses). The victory also clinched Player of the Year honors for the 47-year-old Morin, who had to finish in front of Chris Kaufman, PGA Teaching Professional at BallenIsles Country Club and Lee Rinker, PGA Director of Golf at Emerald Dunes Golf Club to do so. “It’s humbling and very selfgratifying to win both the Section Championship and Player of the Year honors,” said Morin, who earned spots in next year’s Honda Classic and the Puerto Rico Open on the PGA Tour. “There’s a lot of great players in the section — former Tour players.” Morin started the day in a fiveway tie for the lead and maintained a share of the lead with Andrew Filbert after both shot 33s on the front nine. Filbert, the PGA Assistant Professional at Bonita National Golf & Country Club in Bonita Springs, birdied the 10th to take the lead, but bogeyed the next two holes to fall two back after Morin made a birdie at No. 12. Morin finished with six pars, but wasn’t sure he won until he saw the scoreboard. “I couldn’t believe I won by three shots,” he said. “I thought for sure somebody would make a run on the back nine.” Andrew Filbert, PGA Assistant Golf Professional at Bonita National Golf and Country Club finished second at 7-under 209 after a 71. Kaufman of Coral Springs was another shot back, alone in third place, with a 69. Rinker (71-218) tied for 25th at with his sister, Laurie, PGA Life Member (74-218). Gene Fieger, PGA Assistant Golf Professional The Club at Pelican Bay (74) and Joe Allinder, PGA Head Golf Professional at Imperial Golf Club (70) tied for fourth at 4-under 212. Morgan Jewell, PGA Head Professional 26
Alan Morin - Section Champion at the Floridian, shared the day’s best round with Rushi Orza, PGA Assistant Golf Professional at Jonathan’s Landing Golf Club at Old Trail – a 67 – and finished in a sixth-place tie with Kyle Sanders, PGA Head Golf Professional at The Fox Club in Palm City (68). North Florida vs South Florida Challenge Cup! Our team retained The Cup with a 13 ½ - 10 ½ victory over South Florida at Boca Rio Golf Club. It was our first back to back victory in many years! Congratulations to our team and we’re proud of their effort! Well Played Rod Perry, David Hronek, Jon Mansfield, Dan Olsen, Greg Koch, David Damesworth, Ryan Hritz, Chris DeBusk, Nick Frontero, Kevin Crawford, Charles Raulerson and Tim Peterson! A special thank you to our Partner, Chase54 for outfitting the team! South Florid did an exceptional job of hosting. Now we’re thinking Three Peat! Troops comprised of North Florida PGA Members, family and friends rallied around a great cause with a Birdie A Thon for Arnie’s Army Charitable Foundation in conjunction with the Annual North Florida vs South Florida Challenge Cup Matches. Pledges for birdies for players and teams raised $100,000! The North Florida Section solicited the entire Membership to get involved and raise valuable funds that will help children and families in need. The players also went to their members, families and friends to get pledges for support as well. The matches started out on a sunny morning yet ironically a rainbow appeared for a few minutes prior to the start! Arnie was watching! Players wore pink shirts on the final day to honor Mr. Palmer.
The Senior Challenge Cup Matches were hosted by South Florida at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie. The Matches were all tied going into the Singles Matches! North Florida dominated the singles winning 7 of the first 8 matches to wrestle the Romanoff/ Kennedy Cup away from South Florida. Our Senior Cup Team was: Mike Keymont, Keith Kulzer, Gerry James, Charles Raulerson, Jeff Leonard, Jeff Anderson, Brad Rollinson, Bill Shriver, Jim Slattery, John O’Leary, Bob Dickson and Bob Irving. Again, thank you to Chase54 for outfitting the team! We were the best dressed again! North Florida now has both Cups in the house! Again, thank you South Florida for hosting. The goal was to have fun and that was accomplished! The Seniors always look forward to getting together to share stories and rekindle old friendships 28
The Northern Chapter now holds the Jerry Porter Cup! The Jerry Porter Cup Chapter Challenge is in honor of retired Executive Director, Jerry Porter. The annual matches feature the 10 best players from each of the 4 Chapters in a round robin match play format. Each Chapter plays each other and the Chapter who wins the most points hoists the cup! The Northern Chapter slept on a comfortable lead, but faced the Southwest Chapter in the final matches who rallied and almost tied it all up! It came down to the final match to determine this year’s champions, the Northern Chapter! Well played Charles Raulerson, Sean McGauley, Mike Keymont
Dan Olsen, Gerry James, Cary Splane, Bob Wallace, John Duckworth, Spencer Brown, Tim Peterson & Brad Rollinson. As our tournament season is now concluded, our NFPGA Players of the Year have been determined. Congratulations to Rod Perry, Crane Lakes Golf & CC on winning another Player of the Year title which also earned him an exemption into the PGA TOUR Valspar Championship. Mike Keymont, Stoneybrook East is our NFPGA Senior Player of the Year. It was a great season of tournament golf and thank you to all of our members for making the time to compete and share that passion as PGA Members.

Southwest Florida’s independent, luxury property, Naples Grande Beach Resort, has completed an $8 million project to its golf club, the Naples Grande Golf Club. The grand makeover includes a brand new clubhouse, which is the first formal building of its kind for the club, as well as a complete regrass of the golf course with celebration Bermuda grass and leveling and expanding tees. Bridging the gap between modern and traditional design, the new clubhouse offers a grill and bar area, men’s and women’s locker rooms, meeting space, retail space, as well as more functional outdoor space, sight lines, and more. Highly-acclaimed and designed by Rees Jones, the 18-hole, 6,955-yard, par 72 course is located just minutes from Naples Grande Beach Resort and is set among a lush landscape of native Florida pine hammocks, live oak, grand cypress trees, and brilliant water. ClubDesign Associates from Fort Worth, Texas were the team behind the design and aesthetic elements. The overall design scheme can be described as coastal contemporary. Starting
from the inside out, a blue/green color scheme was chosen to bring the outside indoors by enhancing the views of the lake and golf course. The light and medium colors selected for the fabrics, carpets and artwork pop against the warm neutral background and preserve the airy coastal feel. Imagine playing Pinecrest Golf Course in Avon Park. Built in 1926 by legendary architect, Donald Ross, this track exemplifies the use of gentle rolling land and the infamous “False Front” greens. Although a lot has changed of the years, the mystic playing Pinecrest is amazing. Golf on “The Rock” You can go to Heaven if you want. I’d rather stay in Bermuda.” — Mark Twain
Bermudians affectionately refer to their island paradise as “The Rock.” This small British Island Territory sticks out of the Atlantic only 850 miles from the North Carolina coast as a welcoming beacon to sailors and golfers alike, with its unique blend of mainly British, but also African and American cultural influences. In keeping with its British Heritage, sports are an important part of the culture; in fact, it is the only country in the world that celebrates an annual sporting event – Cup Match, a two-day cricket match – with a national holiday. Yachting is another passion of Bermudians and next year will see the world’s sailing eyes firmly on the island nation as the prestigious America’s Cup races will be contended there in June of 2017. The six contenders from the US, UK, Sweden, Japan, New Zealand and France will all be practicing this winter around Bermuda and you can see the boats from many vantage points on island – even from the golf courses!
Fairmont Southhampton and Turtle Hill Golf Club
Port Royal Golf Club Bermuda is also a year-round golf oasis in the middle of the Atlantic, packing in a variety of world-class golf for beginners and pros with magnificent views on its small 21-square mile territory. The island’s small size also ensures that you can indulge in your golf passion without sacrificing being able to sample all the island has to offer off the course – pristine pink sand beaches and scenic coves, fascinating historical sites, active water sports, the finest gourmet cuisine, and of course relaxing with the island’s two most famous libations – The Rum Swizzle and the national drink of Bermuda, The Dark N’Stormy – both made with local Gosling’s Rum.
FAIRMONT SOUTHAMPTON & THE TURTLE HILL GOLF COURSE For fabulous views and exceptional service, staying at the wonderful pink palace on the hill, otherwise known, as the Fairmont Southampton is the choice for many returning and first-time visiting golfers. The Resort also offers a private beach club, water taxi shuttles to the capital city of Hamilton, awardwinning dining and the world-class Willow Stream Spa among other amenities. The Fairmont Southampton is also the site of Turtle Hill GC, one of the 42
World’s “Top 5 Par 3 Courses in the World,” as recognized by GOLF Magazine and among Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play.” Which in turn is host venue to the annual Grey Goose® World Par 3 Championship. Make no mistake this is no pitch and putt, push over layout. Even the touring pros struggled in last year’s Grey Goose® World Par 3 Championship event to post under par rounds on the challenging, dramatically hilly, consistently windy and distractingly scenic course. With well-positioned bunkers, two ball-eating water hazards, three tee offerings and well-defined green complexes – it is a consistent challenge for pros and novices alike. If you don’t think your game is good enough or your wallet deep enough to play with the pros at say the At & T Pebble Beach Pro Am, you should give serious thought to participating in next spring’s Grey Goose® World Par 3 Championship, March 17-19, 2017. Amateur golfers, both men and women, with a wide range of handicaps compete alongside the pros in a wonderful event hosted by The Golf Channel’s own Charlie Rymer. It’s a relaxed two-day event that draws participants and future golf friends from around the world. Southern Golf Central • Volume 17, Issue 5

For those of you familiar with Bermuda and the proximity of Riddell’s Bay GC to the Fairmont Southampton sadly at the time of writing Riddell’s Bay, Bermuda’s oldest course, is still closed for financial reasons. I was fortunate to play one of the last rounds on this memorable layout before if closed in April. There is still some optimism on the island that this local favorite and true gem with input from Seth Raynor and Deveraux Emmett will be saved from development and brought back to life in the near future.

By: Greg Wise Imagine a business and icon of the area turning 100 years old. Imagine being more spectacular now than ever before in its vast history, as this resort enters in to its second century. Is this possible? If you are Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howey in the Hills, Florida, it certainly is. Mission Inn Resort history dates back to 1916, when William J. Howey purchased 60,000 acres of real estate intending to create the largest horticultural empire in the world. Howey banked on investors buying acreage, contracting his company to clear land, plant and harvest citrus trees in the rich soil and ideal climate, then ship the fruit and return profits to the owners. Many might consider this to be the very first Timeshare operations in the country. To enhance sales, in 1917, Mr. Howey commissioned a golf course to be built on

the property to further compliment the Inn. The course was designed by George O’Neil. The result was Florida Chain-o-Lakes Country Club and was quickly acclaimed as Florida’s finest new golf course, boasting a rare 85-foot, tee-to-green elevation change. Towering forests and sparkling spring-fed lakes dotted this tract of land, making this a perfect test of the ability of the player. Most players didn’t measure up to the task. The course was enhanced in the mid1920s, but soon after the stock market crash and the ensuing Great Depression, and an unusual devastating Florida freeze all combined to end of Howey›s dream of a citrus empire. After numerous name changes to the course over the years, Nick Beucher and his family entered the scene in 1964.
Beucher was a husband, father, and successful businessman trading in cattle by-products, meat, and hides. In 1964, he spotted an advertisement in The Wall Street Journal that ultimately led him to purchase the neglected Floridian Country Club. He renovated the golf course and clubhouse in 1969,

and created a new resort inspired by the Spanish Colonial architecture of which he became so fond during his horseback ride through Mexico in the late 1930’s. We had the opportunity to meet with Donna Line during our visit. Donna is the daughter of Nick Beucher and was
gracious enough to take a few minutes out of her busy schedule to speak with us. Donna recounted the story of traveling to Florida for the very first time in 1964 to see what Nick, her father had purchased, after getting a positive report from his son Bob Buecher. Bob had relied on his great ability to play golf, saw the land and had given his father a report that this land was beautiful, well worth the money, and Florida Golf Central • January 2010 Southern Golf Central • Volume 17, Issue 5

had great potential. Donna explained, “as we turned off I-75 on to State Road 19, and just a few miles down this dirt road, her mother Margaret, while crying, said, Oh Nick… please don’t tell me that you have bought this property already! Nick responded ‘Don’t worry Margaret… we will fix it!” Mission Inn has truly been the fam-

Georgia State Golf Courses Open Houses
Georgia State Parks operates eight golf courses across the state and this fall, two open houses were held to invite the Media, businesses, VIPs, people who maybe don’t know about these great golf courses to come and enjoy of day of great food, great golf and a lot of fun. In October the first one was held at The Creek at Hard Labor Creek State Park near Madison Georgia. The second one was held at Arrowhead Pointe Golf Course in Elberton Georgia at The Richard B. Russell State Park.
The Creek at Hard Labor The Creek at Hard Labor, located in Social Circle, offers 18-holes of golf on a rolling course complete with pristine fairways and challenging, yet fun, obstacles like creeks to play around. On Thursday, Oct. 27, the course opened its doors to over 60 players during an open house. The day’s activities included lunch provided by Sweet Mama’s, located in Bostwick, which fed golfers and media homemade favorites. A raffle was held to thank those who came out to enjoy a day of golfing, fun and good food, with winners receiving items like Bridgestone golf balls, Georgia State Parks hats and backpacks, and shirts provided in honor of legendary golfer, Bobby Jones. Karl Gross, the PGA Golf Course

Professional commented, “There are so many wonderful things, not only the course, but Hard Labor has to offer and this wouldn’t be possible without all of the people working each day to show the public our great facilities.” “The course was in great shape, the lunch and prizes were terrific! Thanks to the staff for a great day” said Johnny Rodgers one of the people who participated during the day. The Creek at Hard Labor also offers a quiet day of playing with the course being out of ear-shot of any vehicles on the road, and the most noise heard during the day’s game was the sound of golfers celebrating putts or perfect drives. The clubhouse offers a new addition, a conference and reception room that can be rented for $150 and hold around 80 guests for work, play or both.
“We are working to tell corporate groups about these Hidden Gems across the state and get them to enjoy a round or two of golf while being able to conduct business meetings,” Doug Hollandsworth Founder of The Georgia Golf Trail that The Creek is apart of stated. “One of the many things that makes this course different from some of the others is the ability to stay overnight in one of the cottages at the park, it makes for a wonderful, one-ofa-kind, experience,” Hollandsworth said. “Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites offers so much more than just pristine golf courses.” For those interested in canyon climbing, walking their dogs or geo-caching, Hard Labor Creek offers these activities as clubs that are available for membership throughout the year.

Arrowhead Pointe Golf Course On November 15th, Arrowhead Pointe Golf Course had a Open House for golfers, VIPS, media and businesses to show them one of Georgia’s Hidden Gems. Head Golf Course Manager, Barry Johnston commented, “The Open House held on Tuesday, November 15th was a complete success. It was great to have our local media and businesses out here to enjoy the day on the golf course. It was our intention to not only show what our course has to offer but to build the relationship between Arrowhead Pointe and our local golfers. We appreciate all
Arrowhead Pointe of the support from our golfers and local businesses and look forward to a very successful future.” Designed back in 2001 this Bob Walker designed masterpiece is nestled in the Northeast Georgia mountains. Located on Richard B. Russell State Park you don’t need to worry about any cars, houses, planes or other distractions. This championship 18-hole golf course is located inside the Georgia state park, with 10 of the 18 holes skirting the shoreline of Lake Richard B. Russell. While much of the water does not come in to play it can assure you both a challenge and some of the best views in the state. The elevation changes, doglegs and well placed bunkers will demand that you use every club in your bag. Our Tifeagle Bermuda greens may not look intimidating but the subtle breaks will make sure you are on your game to score.

fashion forward
Hey Ladies! “The 2017 ladies golf collection is a continuation of the simplicity that the ’16 line embodied,” says Danielle Dellios, Antigua women’s designer. “In the new collection, fabrics and colors play a key role versus styling and silhouette. The market was calling for a fresh take on primary color, which was made possible by mixing colors together. Thus, each grouping consists of two
primaries. For example, our new green color, Cypress, is mixed with a bright blue color, Cabana. There are a total of four color combos, each mixing two primary colors. Every printed, striped or colorblocked style within the collection mixes the two colors, instead of using traditional neutral accents like grey or khaki. Combining two complementary primary shades really pops. Prints are as strong as ever in the marketplace, which meant creating unique artwork that could also be used to mix colors and give new life to basic styles.”
Antigua Women’s 2017 Styles One of the new sleeveless styles, Mischief, features an asymmetrical fabric blocking detail using a printed 52
geometric pattern run at an angle across the top of the garment and a solid poly mesh fabric for the bottom half. Not only does the multi-color print allow women to wear multiple different-colored bottoms, the print’s asymmetry perfectly highlights a logo. Another unique style, Sterling, is a long sleeve, half-zip pullover. It features ultra-soft peached jersey fabric, run in solid color for the body, and a space dye pattern for the insets. The space dye fabric incorporates two primary colors along with black and white, and also offers a new type of “heather” effect with the start and stop of the multi colored yarn. Trust features an ultra-light, highstretch woven fabric, along with a few feminine details such as rounded tail bottom and pin-tucks at the top shoulder. “For the first time ever, we’ve introduced a lightweight stretch woven polo,” says Dellios. Trust is a prime example of the big on-and-off-course trend currently going on. A woman can wear this stretch woven polo on the course and also on the weekends. It’s casual enough to don running errands but also sophisticated enough with its

no-stitch self-fabric collar and covered button placket. Haven is one of the line’s more technical styles, combining a few simple details that make it appear more sporty and athletic. Silicone printing has been popular for a while. “But instead of running an all-over print, I used a single line of printed color around the zipper placket and collar,” says Dellios. “The color silicone print is placed on an all-white-bodied garment. The print on the collar gives the illusion of tipping with the tech feel of silicone, while the pointelle mesh pattern insets and sleeves ensure that the garment keeps the golfer cool and dry.” Rogue is the most creative and fun polo style in the ’17 line. It mixes the entire color palette in an all-over linear sublimation print. This style can be worn with any color of our bottoms, along with any white or black bottom that a woman might already have at home. “Since the print is bold, I kept the styling traditional with a button placket and open cuff,” says Dellios. “I also ran the bold print from Rogue in our knit skort called Cinch. We have carried Cinch in solid colors for years, and it’s one of our best-selling bottoms, so it was a given to run it in the print.” Southern Golf Central • Volume 17, Issue 5

Half way around the World… …and still chasing that little white ball! By Greg Wise
View of the Par 5, 12th hole at Emirates Golf Club with the “Marina” area of Dubai in the background. Yes, the small strip of grass is the landing area and the question is, how much to cut off.
April of this year was an exciting time for me. My wife and I had the opportunity to travel to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The first thing I checked was the amount of bags that we were able to check on the plane. “Two checked bags,” is what the online notice said. GREAT… my golf bag was one, and whatever else will fit in the other didn’t matter, as I knew for sure they had stores if I needed additional clothes. Then began the quest for the courses that I wanted to play in the timeframe that I would be in the country and not doing the tourist thing. An interesting story of about how you raise your children. Long ago (as it seems) our youngest son called and needed money very quickly. No hesitation… How much and how can I get it to you? Much like any other story that starts out this way… they are our children, parents are supposed to help in 54

times of need. Fast forwarding to February of this year, my son called and said, my schedule is to be in Dubai from March through July and we are doing much better now. I could write you and mom a check and send it, but you would probably tear it up. So, I have just booked you a flight to come to Dubai and stay with me as a way of “paying you back.” Wow… How can you pass up that type of opportunity? But, he was right; I would have gotten rid of the check. So many courses… So little time. I found a 55+ golf tournament on the day after we arrived at Sharjah Golf and Shooting Range. Okay… the same thing was going through my mind. Golf and Guns! But, this was an absolutely beautiful golf club about 45 minutes north of the Dubai area where we were staying. Watermelon Creek Vineyard
When you think of grapes, usually many think of California, Italy, Spain not Tattnall County in a small community of Tison, GA called Watermelon Creek Vineyard. However in the deep south, down old winding roads, you will find the enchantment, family history and a labor of love for an award winning muscadine winery… www.watermeloncreekvineyard.com. The vineyard is owned by Charles and Deborah Tillman. Charles’ passion for Watermelon Creek is deep rooted in the history of his ancestry dating back to the early 1800’s. Over many years within their family history, Charles, a former chemist and developer in south Georgia, was offered a family house in 2003, which he bought along with 131 adjoining acres from three different relatives. That purchase re-assembled the original home and business site of his family history. Charles said, “we started working on the home place chopping our way through years of overgrown wisteria vines and weeds just to find the 100(+) year old structures on the property.” Sifting through many family documents of the Padgett and Tillman family, Charles and Deborah decided to create and build a winery to tell
the story of the area and the history of nine generations of the land where Watermelon Creek Vineyard now resides. Many of the original buildings still stand on the property today including:The original Padgett one room log cabin which is now their kitchen, the ironing cabin, syrup cabin, women’s outhouse, farm storage shed, smoke/salt house, root cellar, blacksmith shed, tack house, corn crib

and fodder barn. All have been restored and Charles has all the history to share with any one who will listen. Picking up where C.C. Padgett left off, Charles and Deborah resurrected the buildings into what is known today as an award winning Watermelon Creek Vineyard. The vineyard includes two banquet rooms, the Vineyard store/ tasting room with an upstairs gallery and overlook and with the production Wine Cellar, it is the perfect meeting place to relax with friends and make new ones as Charles tells you about the family history. At Walermelon Creek Vineyard, you will enjoy their delicate muscadine wines and toast life’s affordable pleasures. Wines start at $14.95 plus shipping. The variety of reds, whites and blushes are crafted to give you a range from very dry to very sweet to nuture your palette. Then all you have to do is grip it and sip it. Watermelon Creek is a hidden gem and soon you will fall in love with the history, the daily food offerings, tastings, gift shop featuring products from the vineyard. Plus Watermelon Creek is a great place for private events, business and wedding packages as well as private meeting/banquet facilities. It has been roughly 18 months since David Leadbetter introduced his book on the “A” Swing. I had the opportunity to be at the event at Sawgrass in May of 2015 to see firsthand what the difference was and how it truly effects one’s golf swing. Being a little reluctant to change of the many years I have played, I’ll be honest that I was a little skeptical to the change. But like a trooper… I went to experience it. During the 1 1/2 hour demonstration and lesson... the swing grew on me. During the past 18 months… okay,

let me be realistic, I noticed a difference right away. Over the years of aging. I’ve lost flexibility, distance on my shots… and the motivation to try keep up. Surprise, it seemed to be back. I booked a checkup visit (wow… that sounds like a doctor visit at my age) to the Leadbetter Golf Academy in Orlando at ChampionsGate. Sean Hogan was to work with me to check the swing and make sure I was still on line with the “A Swing.” But this time there was a catch. I took a long a friend to experience what I had experienced 18 months ago, to see if it influenced his game.
explained to Sean… that the knee surgeries and hip issues that he had inhibited his swing, Sean’s response was, “No Worries… we’ll get you fixed up.”
Well… to my surprise, my swing was intact the way that they are teaching and felt very comfortable with a few modifications that Sean had made to my positions.
By the end of our session with Sean, David had a video of the before and after of his swing, which resulted in a follow up video of “This is how to stay on track” with the A Swing.
The real surprise came from David McLeod of Ocala. A good friend… an avid golfer and low handicap guy (don’t ya just hate those kind of people). As David’s issues were
It has made a surprising difference in David’s game at this point, as well as my own experience. Going back to school… I would give it an “A.”

The Castle in Venice The Plantation Golf & Country Club in Venice, Fla., well received for its two challenging golf courses, is also known as a comfortable setting for golfers of all expertise and ages including William Castle, a 93 year-old very active member. William Castle is an inspiration to all at Plantation Golf and Country Club. At the young age of 93, he plays golf three times a week and is a master bridge player. His first set of clubs was purchased by his father for $12 in 1942 while William was attending Notre Dame. He proudly proclaims that he has shot his age or better many times. It was a special day when he remembers shooting an 82 at age 83. Castle, a retired dentist, moved to Florida with his wife, Jean in 1985. He took up residence in Venice in 1999 after she passed away. While Mr. Castle attended Notre Dame, he was involved in the V12 program, similar to ROTC today. After 3 ½ years, the Navy paid for him to attend Marquette Dental School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was here that he met Jean. She was attending college to become a dental hygienist. Castle graduated Marquette in 2 ½ years as a dentist in 1946. He received his diplomas from both schools and the day after graduation he and Jean were married. As a Lt. Junior Grade Officer in the Navy, he was shipped to Guam to work as a dentist for the Army. Shortly after his arrival, he was allowed to send for Jean. They lived in the BOQ’s until his
discharge in 1948. Upon returning to the states, they lived in a San Francisco hotel for over a month with a new baby, while waiting for discharge papers. They moved back to his hometown, Lockport, New York where he established a dental practice and raised seven children. At the age of 57, one of his daughters presented him with a book about running by Dr. Cooper of Texas. Castle was inspired and started running. He competed for many years in various marathons, including running the Boston Marathon three times with the American Medical Joggers Association. He would always say: “The last mile is the easiest because you know you are almost done.” When running the New York Marathon with his son he blew out his knee which ended his hobby of running. He is a loyal and avid “heart breaking” (his words) Notre Dame football fan who enjoys bike riding, golfing, and duplicate bridge.
