Your Presence is your Present

As we get swept into the excitement of the holiday season, presents come to mind and lots of holiday functions that require my presence this year. The gift of all the beautiful people in my life is enough for me….But some champagne, dark chocolate and Georgia nuts would be nice. We’ve had the gift of working with incredible folks over the years that have supported us by helping make our presence known, I am forever grateful! This industry has a powerful presence in so many different communities, networks through charitable tournaments that support the less fortunate and the men and women who serve our country.

To those who have made your presence known in our pages, we thank you for being a part of our publication and for the gift of great content that benefit all of us! Like the feature article on pages 1012. Shout out Jen Jolly and Gary Player for making me aware of The Blue Zones. If you don’t see our digital issue in your inbox, we would love your presence on our subscribers list. Sign up now for a chance to win a Shot Scope V5! All of our online subscribers are included in our monthly giveaways!

As we look ahead, we are excited to enhance our digital presence with Turf Life’s brand-new website www.turflifeclub.com! We are filled with the grooviest gratitude for this community that has supported us, making this new chapter possible. We couldn’t have done it without your continued presence and engagement, and we hope the new site will serve as a stronger connection point for all of us. Respect the Turf!!

Turf Life was born out of love for the turf industry—a love that began during my summers in Tennessee on my grandparents’ farm and grew into a lifelong respect for the people and stories behind growing stuff. It has been a dream of mine to create products that respect all turf champions, athletes and agronomists. Products that represent their pride and passion while also creating a community that understands the journey that turf life leads us down. Help us grow our presence and engage with our digital version and all the social media platforms. (TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn)

As we move into this fun festive season, let’s not only celebrate the things we give and receive but also take the time to be present. Recognize the efforts of those who are making a difference in the industry, and support each other in ways that matter most. Our collective presence is the greatest gift .

RIP Jeff Babineau (Babs) for enhancing our lives with your presence.

LEGENDARY LIVING AT

With over 20 years in the private club sector, my absolute favorite thing about country clubs continues to be its people. The people I work with every day, the people I serve every day, the people who educate, inspire and light my way. In some cases, these people are the same and in others that ever so important sense of belonging that creates community and camaraderie comes from the most surprising places.

Boca Grove, located in Boca Raton, Florida, is one of those places and will be my final club. I say this partially due to my age but mostly because it is the Club I want to leave my legacy with. It is a club rich in history and tradition that continually reinvents itself while staying true to its past. It is truly a very special place.

We highlight our beginnings as a 330-acre Honeybell plantation, the site of the prestigious Boca Grove Quadel Seniors Classic and our claim to fame as Gary Player’s

first American home. When I began at Boca Grove in 2018 as their Director of Marketing, these things – as well as our storied history with professional tennis –became my focus as I was tasked to breathe new life into a 35+ year old community. Where I suppose

it may have seemed daunting to some as this was the norm at that time with golf clubs, it inspired me to make a concentrated effort to get to know the people and history of Boca Grove. I have met the most extraordinary individuals through this process,

The “Blue Zones” in the world are regions identified as having a high concentration of people living exceptionally long lives, typically attributed to a combination of healthy lifestyle factors like diet, exercise, strong social networks, and low stress levels; the five primary Blue Zones are: Okinawa (Japan), Ikaria (Greece), Loma Linda (California, USA), Sardinia (Italy), and Nicoya Peninsula (Costa Rica). www.bluezones.com

many of whom I call friend today.

One of those is Gary Player himself! I still remember the first time I called the number I was given for him. I never expected he would answer, I assumed it would be an assistant of some sort, but it was him! Gary Player not only answers his own phone calls, he returns every single message the same day personally! He is a class act from start to finish!!

His connection to Boca Grove continues to this day and we are all the better for it. Gary represents all that is the American Dream, the grit and fight for a better life ... his mum died of cancer when he was only 8, his father worked in the coal mines of South Africa and took out a loan to get Gary his first set of clubs. In his own words “A full life is a gift. A career in golf is a privilege. Having my story told is a humbling honour. My heart is full … full of love for the people who made the journey so extraordinary. You start out just wanting to win that first tournament. Then one day, you look back and realize the journey of a champion became something far greater than trophies or titles. This is my story… of how a young boy from Africa dared to conquer the world.”

Gary’s spirit forever lives at Boca Grove. It is part of our very fiber, from the roots of our Honeybell trees to our Vision 2029 plans to be the first private country club

The Curve Health & Wellness Center at Boca Grove

community to be a designated Blue Zone. It’s a lofty goal but one that continues to be achievable as we mirror the man himself. Gary is clearly the winningest man in the history of golf, but he is also an avid and dedicated health and fitness advocate.

Gary credits his brother Ian as he learned the importance of a strong fitness regime at the young age of nine. His brother, who was eight years older than him, left for war at 17 and gave Gary a set of weights and made him promise to look after his body and ‘treat it like a holy temple’ for the rest of his life. Gary has kept to his word as at the young age of 89, he still spends 90 minutes a day in the gym pushing 300 pounds with his legs, running the treadmill, doing 200 sit-ups and exercising his fingers to help ward off arthritis.

He was the perfect person to cut the ribbon on Boca Grove’s brand new Sports & Wellness Center called The Curve in 2021 and his mantra in life is 100% in sync with the attributes of our Vision to create that Blue Zone we are so interested in:

Eat half as much as you do right now; Exercise twice as much as you do right now;

· Laugh three times as much as you do; and

· Have unmeasured love in your heart.

What better legacy for me to leave with Boca Grove then to emulate and carry on one that is lived to its fullest by one of our first and most cherished members? I am honored to call this man my friend, but I am blessed to have him in my heart as an inspiration for a better Boca Grove for all.

Stay tuned next issue for a look into the TurfLife world of racing thoroughbreds that I also share with Gary Player!

SW Florida’s Most Unique Golf Community

Sarasota is an amazing city on the West Coast of Florida. It burst onto the national map when the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus moved its winter home to the sleepy Gulf-side city in 1927.

Since that time Sarasota has become known as a nature lovers paradise, as well as a beautiful downtown area that is a hive of cultural activity. It has a year-round array of live theater and music shows, art galleries, museums and bustling restaurant and nightlife spots.

Further east, suburban sprawl has taken place recently – with malls, shopping centers, large resort-style developments and

many more restaurants. This sprawl has grown rapidly east of I-75 and through the ultra-modern communities of Lakewood Ranch.

Then the world changes… completely.

Old Florida reappears, with acres and acres of sprawling cattle and horse ranches. The landscape is more like America’s Wild West. It is hard to believe that this is only 35 miles from the bikini-filled beaches of Sarasota’s Siesta Key.

Near Myakka City (which is little more than a crossroad with a gas station), suddenly there is another drastic change … thanks to the vision of the developers, the fast work of the Heritage

Links construction company, plus the design excellence of Hall of Famer Nick Price. Soleta, a low density/high luxury community with an eye-popping but naturally designed golf course, stands out like an emerald in the wilderness.

And it did so just 11 months after the first shovel was put into the ground in January of 2024. The end-result, both in terms of quality and speed of construction, is nothing short of amazing.

“We had a great team and we had the right amount of equipment,” explains Price, without any hesitation. “We have sand here, no rock. That is normally the big thing that stops people from completing on time. Plus, all of the materials that we got were from on-sight. All of the sand was here. If you are in a clay area and you need sand, you have to wait for them to bring that in. I don’t want to say it was simple but it was a seamless construction for us.”

That seamless construction will continue with the addition of all of the amenities that are expected at a top-notch private country club. Foremost among them is a 30-acre worldclass golf practice and training facility designed by renowned teacher David Leadbetter.

Then comes the construction of a low density/high luxury community with only 93 total homesites, sharing an expansive 530 acres of unspoiled property with the golf course. The golf course will be on one part of the property and the homesites on another section.

“This club will be a private, gated community,” explained Managing Partner David Turner. “In total there will be 275 memberships, with another 100 national memberships.

Each home will be required to be a member.”

Renowned teacher David Leadbetter has been placed in charge of the Soleta Golf Academy. The driving range already is in place. Additional training and practice enhancements are coming soon.

Also, Soleta will be a family club, with a pool, clubhouse, pickleball and tennis courts. But it is the golf course – a pure, core-golf course – that will attract members.

The natural beauty of the old horse and cattle ranch impressed the developers and the golf course architect right from the start. Price was determined to construct a minimalist, low-profile golf course that blended into the natural surroundings. Less than 1 million cubic yards of soil were moved in the construction of Soleta – a low total by modern course standards.

The course winds naturally through the sand dunes throughout the property. There are 10 lakes that were constructed on the course but they sit alongside some of the holes and none of them come directly into play. They cascade down from the top of the property to the exit, near the Myakka River.

“There are no forced carries on the entire golf course,” explained Price. “There are two ways to play golf, in the air and on the ground. Unfortunately, especially in America, too much emphasis was placed on playing golf in the air. This course was constructed to be hard and fast and allow the golfer the opportunity to bounce the ball onto the green, if that is the shot they chose.”

The final design is the perfect members course. The fairways are generous. The greens are not artificially pushed up in the air. The undulations on the absolutely perfect tifdwarf putting surfaces are subtle and require some thought, especially since the greens average 8,000 square feet in size.

Despite a course that stretches to more than 7,400 yards, elasticity was built into the design so that members of all levels could enjoy playing there.

“We want people to come out and have fun,” stresses Price. “I encourage them to stop thinking about playing a particular tee or distance. We designed some of the tees to be 120 yards long. Members should experiment with playing from different spots on every tee. Move the ball around and play a different course every day. I know I don’t want to play the same golf course every day.”

With the open nature of the course at Soleta – many trees were taken out or moved – wind always will be a factor. That is another reason the course will play differently every day. Also, the lack of trees allows for amazing vistas – from hole to hole, across the wetlands and alongside the lakes. Stopping play to take in the views is a natural occurrence of a round of golf at Soleta.

“We are very proud of the final product with regard to the golf course here,” says Turner. “It sets as high standard for us as we move into the phase of construction of the amenities and the housing. But it’s a standard that we are holding through the development of this property. People will be talking about Soleta for years to come.”

Admittedly, those who got a first look at the golf course after the ribbon-cutting on December 10, 2024 couldn’t stop talking about it. That leads to a heightened sense of anticipation for what is to come.

Witch Way Ball Marker

The ball marker that made headlines at the Valspar Championship is now available just in time for the holidays. Witch Way, designed by proven golf innovator Rick Reimers, is a new, rotating ball marker on a spike with a line on top to achieve perfect aim on the green. Witch Way can shave strokes off your score and boost your putting confidence. Witch Way is USGA conforming and available for $9.99 as a single and $29.99 in a five-pack with a handy carry case. Check it out at https://www. finnscooters.com/pages/witchway.

A hint of the value of Witch Way was seen when Kevin Streelman put a prototype into play at the Valspar Championship and had 10 consecutive one-putts on his way to a 7-under 64. Afterwards, Streelman said, “It’s not rocket science, but it makes sense. You try and get the lines down close to where you want to roll it, and then you use the line to try and match ‘em up.”

What was then a prototype is now available to the public as either a single ball marker or in a handy five-pack.

Witch Way inventor Rick Reimers explained, “If you want to aim something accurately, you need to be able to see what you are aiming and the target at the same time. One degree error at 10 feet is 2 inches. One degree of adjustment of your marker might be only one half of one blade of grass!

Where were you born? Did you grow up there? I was born in Atlanta, GA. Grew up in a small town just outside of Atlanta called Conyers, GA.

Is “acting your age” overrated? One Hundred Percent. I’ve always believed that age is just a number and although the body does age, it’s your spirit that keeps you youthful.

What do you do for a living? I’ve been an actor for the last thirty years of my life. I’ve appeared in over seventy-five projects and now am getting into the directing and producing side of the business.

What golf apparel do you like to wear? I recently became a brand ambassador for Bad Birdie and really enjoy their clothing and hats. The brand is current with today’s trends and really a great product.

Whom do you most admire for their inner and outer beauty? Oh, that’s a tough one. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet a lot of influential people in my profession and in doing so, it’s taught me to find the beauty in everyone, even if it doesn’t resonate right away.

Steak, chicken, or seafood? Steak or sushi. Depends on the steakhouse and also the sushi joint. Bones Steakhouse in Atlanta, GA is one of the best. Sushi Park in Los Angeles is hard to beat.

Name the three most important things to you in this world. Kindness, Creativity and Love

What three people would you most like to play with in your fantasy golf foursome? First would be my brother who passed away many years ago. Second would be Tiger Woods. Third would be Arnold Palmer.

What are some of your great accomplishments? Keeping a positive attitude and the dream alive even through the most difficult times of my life.

Favorite charity to support? St. Jude. I’m fortunate enough to get to play in their celebrity golf tournaments that have a huge turnout in raising money for the Hospital.

What else would you like for us to know about you? I have been single for quite some time now. Still looking for that special gal.

What would you like to do for a living? I’d love to bring “Ghost Town in the Sky” back to life—the abandoned amusement park on top of a mountain in NC! Picture this: a park designed and run by roller coaster enthusiasts aged 10 and 12, who are already plotting epic virtual layouts and cliff side coasters! Family fun is literally the business plan!

Aside from golf, what do you prefer for fun and relaxation? Dog beach with my pup Obi-Wan, outdoor adventures, concerts & music, spontaneous road trips, rollercoasters and impromptu sunset stops at the beach. Oh, and skydiving—nothing like a freefall to realign your perspective!

Steak, chicken, or seafood? Pittsburgh-style prime ribeye, medium rare, with au poivre on the side!

Tell us something about yourself that only your closest friends know. In third grade, I invented a T-shirt folding gadget. Fast-forward, and now you can buy it for $19.99 at Bed Bath & Beyond.

What three things would you need to survive on a deserted island? Sunblock for my Irish skin, Obi (my dog and co-pilot in life), and my bible.

What do you find to be the most annoying habit people demonstrate on the golf course? Yelling at fox squirrels for stealing snacks from golf carts—like, come on, you left your granola bar in full squirrel view! Maybe rethink your snack strategy next time you tee off, Nature’s just doing its thing!

What three people would you most like to play with in your fantasy golf foursome? My three sisters—because nothing brings a family together like a shared struggle, right? Who’s your favorite comedian? Denny Corby!

Benefitting the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit

AdventHealth Waterman Foundation swung into action on November 11, 2024 for their 30th annual golf tournament, held once again at the stunning Bella Collina Golf Club in Montverde, Florida. Nestled near Lake Apopka and Bella Collina’s spring-fed Lake Siena, the championship course provided players with a challenging and scenic experience, featuring dramatic elevation changes and undulating greens. Beyond the picturesque setting, the event offered a day filled with friendly competition

and fun. Participants enjoyed a variety of contests, including the thrilling ball launcher and a putting challenge that tested their precision on the green. All proceeds from the tournament benefitted a worthy cause – the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit at AdventHealth Waterman. This vital unit provides critical care and support for patients recovering from strokes, injuries, and other debilitating conditions. The tournament wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of presenting

sponsor, Robins & Morton. Their commitment to the event played a significant role in its success. Players also had the opportunity to participate in a silent auction, expertly curated by Auctions by Design. With a wide array of attractive items up for grabs, the auction added an exciting element to the day.

Looking Forward to Teeing Off Again Next Year

The AdventHealth Waterman Foundation extends its gratitude to all the players, sponsors, volunteers, and everyone who contributed to making the annual golf tournament a resounding success. If you’re interested in joining the fun and supporting this important cause next year, contact Joan Ordazzo at the AdventHealth Waterman Foundation at 352.253.3270 or joan.ordazzo@AdventHealth.com. CHOOSE

A LAWN THAT FEELS AS GREAT AS IT LOOKS

Grass can be soft to the touch, resistant to weeds & bugs and also stand up to daily wear & drought.

EMPIRE IS THAT GRASS

Just Breathe!

G Most golfers overlook this essential element of the golf swing

olf is a sport of precision, requiring a delicate balance of physical skill and mental fortitude. While golfers often focus on perfecting their swing or choosing the right clubs, one essential element is often overlooked: the breath.

A Yoga & Tai Chi instructor, business leader and a star athlete, Roberto Suarez, CEO of el Happy-

Breath, helps individuals find peace and balance through the power of breath. With decades of experience in the practice of holistic wellness and training with some of the leading breathwork practitioners and pioneers, Suarez has led over 50,000 people in breathwork events around the world including Cuba, Mexico and Australia.

An avid golfer, Suarez, based in Stuart, FL, works with professionals and everyday golfers to improve their performance. The importance of developing proper, conscious breathing techniques is essential during an 18-hole round in terms of

managing and controlling the mental game. Learning how to breathe properly can provide that extra edge: better focus, less tension, and increased ability in the present moment.

On a recent podcast with Oxygen Advantage, former world number one and four time- major champion, Rory McIlroy, commented, “One of the things I think about (in competition) is keeping my mouth closed and breathing through my nose, especially in pressure situations. It’s a simple way to center yourself.”

Developing a simple yet powerful breathing technique, can be your

secret weapon on the course, even more so to get that “W” in your club championship, win the Calcutta in your member guest or capture bragging rights in your annual family tournament.

It’s designed to quickly and effectively calm your nervous system, sharpen your focus, and enhance your overall well-being. By incorporating el HappyBreath into your pre-shot routine, between shots, or as a post-round cool-down, you can tap into a state of flow and elevate your game to new heights.

Benefits of breathwork:

• Stress Reduction: Golf can be a high-pressure game. el HappyBreath activates your parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety.

• Enhanced Focus: The rhythmic pattern of el HappyBreath anchors you in the present moment, allowing you to concentrate fully on your shot.

• Increased Energy: By optimizing oxygen intake, el HappyBreath provides a natural energy boost, helping you stay focused and energized throughout your round.

• Mind-Body Connection: The mind and body work together in golf. el HappyBreath strengthens this connection, promoting smoother swings and more accurate shots.

How to develop an effective breathwork practice:

1. Four Sets of Five Breaths: This technique consists of four sets, each containing five breaths. Take four short breaths followed by one long breath.

2. Short Breaths: Focus on making these breaths smooth and continuous. The goal is to connect the inhale and exhale into seamless circles, emphasizing the flow of your breath. You can breathe in and out of either your nose or mouth.

3. Long Breath: After each set of four short breaths, take a long, deep breath. On the inhale, expand your lungs fully, and on the exhale, release all the air completely.

4. Repeat: Continue this pattern –four short breaths and one long breath – for a total of four sets without pausing.

The exercise above combines short and long breaths. To maximize your practice. Short breaths promote a sense of calm and focus, helping you stay present in the moment. Long breaths revitalize your body with oxygen, energizing you and enhancing your stamina.

While seeming too simple for complicated minds, most of us do not breathe properly. Whether we breathe too shallow, too fast, or even hold our breath, learning to breath consciously is not only good for your mind and your health, but it’s one of the key performance tools for playing stress free golf and executing the shots that count when it matters most.

My friends are always envious of my “stay-and-play” travel opportunities that I enjoy as a writer for Golf Central Magazine, but this trip made them turn the color of the deftly manicured greens on the Nicklaus Par Three Experience at Riviera Maya.   I’m glad some pictures accompany this story because in this case, a picture is worth a thousand words...but I will do my best to give my trip contextual validity.

Vidanta started as one hotel in Mazatlán back in 1974 and has grown and evolved to span seven different destinations—with one more on the way—and home to the only resident Cirque du Soleil show in Mexico, the world’s first luxury theme park, the PGA TOUR Mexico Open at VidantaWorld, and so much more.  I can remember turning 50, and it was nothing like the celebration Vidanta has been enjoying throughout 2024.   I was invited to enjoy Vidanta Rivera

Maya in Cancun, Mexico, where I competed in the Anniversary Golf Tournament, one of five competitions being held across their outstanding destination properties.  But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, because that’s only “part” of this fantastic story. When we arrived in Cancun we were greeted by very professional and personable representatives from the resort.  During the drive, we were engaged with a historical review of the Vidanta properties located throughout

Hole 7

Mexico and the unique nature of the Vidanta Riviera Maya.  Nothing they shared prepared us for the “royaltylike” treatment and amenities we were to enjoy during our visit.

Named as one of the Top 5 hotels in Eastern Mexico by Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards, Vidanta Riviera Maya is an experience like no other. Guests can explore over 1,000 acres of paradise, dotted with pristine pools and bordered by magnificent beaches.

You know things are going to go well when you are greeted with a glass of champagne and staff whose sole goal is to make you feel welcome and comfortable at check-in.  And that they did.

We were ushered to our room, which is a misnomer - it was an impressive luxury suite.

The One Bedroom Deluxxe features one bedroom with a king-size bed and in-room TV, a gourmet kitchen with breakfast bar, an attached dining room with a formal dining table and sideboard, a living room with two sleeper -sofas and a TV, two bathrooms and one Jacuzzi tub, and a private terrace, complete with outdoor lounge furniture.

If we didn’t have to return to the “real world”, we could have been convinced to move in.

As if the accommodations weren’t enough, our room boasted the following welcome “spread”: Margarita ingredients - tequila, Cointreau, and lime juice, Cheese & Bread tray, Fruit Bowl, Tea tray with lemons and honey, Vidanta-branded duffle bag, golf hats, towel and wedge (yes, I said wedge).

Our edible goodies were replenished during our stay with a tasty macaroon plate and a chocolate golf ball dessert. Nice touches included a rose on her side of the bed, personalized stationery

and notepad, and his/her toiletry kits. If we never left the room, we would have lived La Vita Loca, and left spoiled and 5 pounds heavier.  Instead, we enjoyed many of the resort’s amenities and still left 5 pounds heavier.

Our first night included an openair welcome to the Golf Tournament, complete with a delectable tapas-style buffet and plenty of beverages. The entertainment for the evening was watching the golf participants compete in a putting contest.  There were 3 putts of varying lengths - 8 feet, 20 feet, and 36 feet.  If you made the first, you kept going until you qualified for the grand prize, by making all 3. Very few made the first putt.  You guessed it, I was one of the last to putt, after watching the nuance of the break in the putt, I stepped up and nailed it.  After prancing around like a proud peacock, I proceeded to miss the second putt and went back to enjoying the beverages being served. Saturday, I competed in the Anniversary Golf Tournament, playing the Nicklaus Par Three Experience course, where the nearly 3,000-yardlong course has holes ranging from 69 to 276 yards long.  Fortunately, the tees we were playing tapped out at 214 yards on the 13th hole.  My playing partners were excellent company, much better than the game I played that day. LOL

After golf, we were treated to a very holistic-feeling couples massage at Brio

Spa. Every one of our senses was engaged in the experience. From the soothing sounds of our therapist’s voices, to the head-to-toe relaxation of a professional massage.  We could’ve taken a lengthy nap and probably missed dinner.

Speaking of dinner, Dining at Vidanta Riviera Maya is an adventure in the jungle, allowing guests to experience fantastic cuisine from all around the world. Snack on ceviche, savor a juicy gourmet burger or enjoy a perfectly cooked steak and signature cocktails at one of nearly 20 restaurants and lounges.

We chose to eat near the beach, with our feet in the sand and hands on a delicious beverage.

Inspired by the beach huts, food stalls, and open-air restaurants of Tulum, the bohemian village, brought traditional foods, authentic flavors, and casual refreshments to a beautiful moon-lit evening.

Sunday started with a delicious buffet breakfast at the Del Lago Restaurante, which featured one of the most extensive menus I’ve ever seen.

After an enjoyable breakfast, we decided to try to burn some calories with a walk around the property, checking in on the alligator preserve, and flamingo sanctuary, sharing the walkway with a variety of number of iguanas, who were comfortable letting you take their picture, as they were making their way through the mangroves.

After a quick change into our swimsuits and a short jaunt to the exclusive Beach Club, we couldn’t believe our eyes when we were escorted to our poolside oasis, where two lounge chairs, our entry to the pool, and professional and non-intrusive service personnel were ready to make our day unforgettable.  After enjoying a tasty lunch, a brief nap in the sun, and a lazy float in the pool, we retreated to our room to get ready for our final night’s dinner.

We had so many choices, it was difficult to make a decision, when everywhere you turn there’s, excellent cuisine waiting to meet your tastebuds.  After careful deliberation, we chose Robayaki Grill and Sushi, where Mexican cuisine seamlessly blends with Japanese classics like sushi and hibachi.

As we traveled back to our room for our final night in the jungle, we were so thankful to have been allowed to celebrate Vidanta’s 50th Anniversary in such a casual and intimate way.  The staff made our stay exemplary and the accommodations our experience luxurious.

The stable of Vidanta resorts offers some of Mexico’s most luxurious and unique destinations.  For more information about Riviera Maya, or any of the Vidanta properties, visit www.vidanta.com, or call 1-800292-9446. Buenos Noches.

The Verb Kind 2nd Swing Golf Classic

It was a perfect day for golf, and the air was filled with the excited chatter of participants and the gentle clink of clubs. But this wasn’t just any golf tournament. It was a special event hosted by The Verb Kind (TVK), a charity dedicated to inspiring and engaging people to change the trajectory of incarcerated youth.

The Verb Kind was born from a simple idea: to make a difference in the lives of young people confined to juvenile detention centers. A small group of individuals, moved by the potential of these young souls, began visiting the Orlando Juvenile Detention Center every Monday night. They brought laughter, fun, and hope, transforming the dreary routine of detention into something to look forward to.

Inspired by the positive impact of their efforts, TVK expanded its mission to reach more young people across Florida and beyond. The golf tournament was one of many initiatives aimed at raising funds and awareness for their cause. The event brought

together golfers of all skill levels, corporate sponsors, and community members who shared a passion for making a difference. The Verb Kind’s2nd Swing Golf Tournament was more than just a sporting event; it was a celebration of hope, resilience, and the power of human connection. By raising funds and awareness, the tournament helped to ensure that TVK’s mission would continue to thrive, inspiring and engaging people to change the trajectory of incarcerated

youth, one life at a time. Omni Orlando Resort at Champions Gate was the host golf course for the event, and also highlighted their Eagles Edge at Champions Gate. Just steps away from our main building immerse yourself with 30 stateof-the-art hitting bays featuring Toptracer technology. The Pretournament party was a great success and included some very cool silent auction items. For information on the golf event, please visit- TheVerbKind.com.

Members of the NFLPA joined many of the teams during the day.

Golf with a Silver Lining (Surf & Turf Portugal) Top 3 Golf Courses on the Silver Coast of Portugal

If you are looking for perfect year round weather, delicious food, incredible wines, and an inexpensive winter getaway, look no further than Centro Portugal. Also known as the ‘Silver Coast’, it is most famous for having some of the best surfing beaches in the world and more than a few excellent courses to test your game. Here are my favourite three: Probably the most visually appealing of the seven courses I played, Praia D’El Rey Golf Course is a perennial favourite for visitors, and it’s less than an hour’s drive from Lisbon. The layout combines wide-open ocean links and tight, well-forested parkland style. In fact, over half the holes are either on the ocean or have magnificent sea views.

There are few fairway bunkers to contend with, and while I found the rough cut short, wander even a bit further astray, there is deep fescue, making it difficult to find your errant shots.

West Cliffs Golf Links is only 3kms away and one of the most anticipated courses I have had the privilege to play. It is currently ranked #2 in Portugal and was designed by Cynthia Dye, the niece of legendary architect Pete Dye. If she is anything like this course, I would say she is feisty and mischievous with a great sense of humour, but it takes you a little time to get to know her.

Most holes have forced carries

World Renowned Surfing in Peniche at Baleal Beach
Royal Óbidos 18th Green

over no man’s land, and the enormous greens have crazy undulations. This course is not for the faint of heart, so expect to lose a few balls along the way. I highly suggest you check your ego at the door and play from a more forward tee block to get the most enjoyment from your round.

Public tee times for either course range from US$125 to $180 + $50 for a shared power cart.

For good reason, Royal Óbidos has been host to The Portugal Open, part of the European Challenge Tour, since September 2020. Step into the clubhouse, and you’ll immediately come faceto-face with the fighting spirit of legendary, five-time Major Champion Seve Ballesteros and know you are in for a memorable encounter. Ballesteros designed this modern resort-style layout to take full advantage of the property’s proximity to the sea. The par-4s are long, the par-5s are very strategic, and the par3s are incredibly challenging. I can guarantee that this course

will test every club in your bag. Ballesteros imagined a tough but fair course, but even though he died before work on the course was completed, his vision lives on.

Public green fees range from US$100 to $150 + $50 for a shared cart.

Portugal remains one of

Western Europe’s least expensive travel destinations, but it is still rich in history, culture, and local hospitality. All three courses are within striking distance of each other and offer affordable Stay’N’Play packages in 5* accommodations.

Sky Valley:  The Heart-and-Soul of the Rabun County Experience

If you are passionate about enjoying The Great Outdoors, you would be hard pressed to find a more appealing and fun-filled destination in the southeast than Sky Valley, Georgia, which is located in Rabun County.  Perched in the extreme northeastern section of Georgia, Sky Valley has been correctly labeled as Georgia’s “Highest and Coolest City,” because of its 3,500-foot altitude in the southern section of the North Georgia Mountains.  Located two hours north of Atlanta, Sky Valley and Rabun County, as a whole, are so appealing that many tourists who visit this part of Georgia on a vacation eventually return to buy a house and stay.  Very few destinations in the U.S. have that kind of year-round attraction.

The true appeal of Sky Valley and the rest of Rabun County

is the seemingly endless list of things to do, try, buy, sample, and visit.  There’s a good reason why locals in Rabun County will tell you that “This is where you want to be.  Let us tell you why.  Your next chapter starts here.”  Rabun County may well be the true home of Southern Hospitality.

The heart and soul of Sky Valley is actually the Sky Valley Country Club, which is also a member of the Georgia Golf Trail.  In addition to access to its 18-hole championship golf course -- which is open to the public -- residents and visitors are playing tennis, pickleball, and enjoying miles of hiking trails which are dotted with a number of scenic waterfalls.  And, there’s croquet, too, in Sky Valley, which is only available to members, but the existence of croquet is another example of

the social and recreational appeal of life in Sky Valley.  Visiting Sky Valley is such a heart-string tugging experience that many couples utilize the Alpineinspired interdenominational chapel on-site for exchanging their wedding vows.

As far as accommodations are concerned, many visitors to Sky Valley utilize AirBnB and Vrbo to secure a place to stay.  Another appealing overnight destination is The Dillard House in nearby Dillard, Georgia.  There are many hotel-like rooms for overnight visitors at The Dillard House.  And, it’s a good idea to come with an appetite if you choose the family style dining at The Dillard House.

For a change of pace, many residents and visitors to Sky Valley enjoy visiting other parts of Rabun County where you can

shop and have lunch in the historic downtown of Clayton, Georgia; enjoy fishing at Andy’s Trout Farm; try fly fishing at Blackhawk Fly Fishing; go horseback riding at the Dillard Riding Stables; have a picnic at Black Rock Mountain State Park; explore the two-mile long Tallulah Gorge where you can also walk across the suspension bridge which hangs 80 feet above the waterfalls; and sample the wine at area wineries.

If you drive into nearby Highlands, North Carolina, you can explore the mountainous terrain on a zipline or mountain swings at the Highlands Aerial Park.  Another fun option is to go whitewater rafting on the Chattooga River – where parts of the movie Deliverance were filmed – on the outskirts of Cashiers, North Carolina.  There are also some great hiking and waterfall sight-seeing options in the greater Highlands area, too.

The Great Outdoors of Rabun County (www.explorerabun.com) and the fun of Sky Valley (www. VisitSkyValleyGA.com) await your arrival.  For more information about the Georgia Golf Trail, check out www.GeorgiaGolfandTravel.com.

Rumbling Bald Joins Forces with Lake Lure Cleanup Efforts and Welcomes Members and Guests Back for the Holidays

Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure is proud to announce its collaboration with the Town of Lake Lure, FEMA, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in ongoing efforts to restore Lake Lure following Hurricane Helene. Rumbling Bald is actively contributing to this cherished community resource’s swift and effective cleanup by designating its shoreline as a key extraction point for debris removal.

The lake, a centerpiece for residents and visitors alike, sustained significant damage, with debris affecting its navigability and overall functionality. Recognizing the urgency of restoring the lake, Rumbling Bald has opened its shoreline to aid in safely and efficiently removing debris.

This effort underscores the community’s shared commitment to recovery and resilience.

“We’re honored to support this initiative as a good neighbor and steward of our local environment,” said Mark Eades, Marketing Director at Rumbling Bald. “While this temporary effort may impact member and guest access to our beach area, we believe it’s vital to ensure Lake Lure is restored as quickly as possible for everyone to enjoy.”

Rumbling Bald Welcomes Guests Back for the Holidays

Despite its role in the lake cleanup efforts, Rumbling Bald is pleased to announce that its

On Tuesday, of The ANNIKA driven by Gainbridge at Pelican… 39year old Brittany Lincicome announced via social media that she was ending her long career as a full-time player on the LPGA Tour that began in 2005.

Lincicome came into the LPGA as a very strong Amateur… with a lot of promise to make it big on the Ladies Tour.

Let’s take a quick look at some of the amazing highlights of 20-years on the LPGA Tour

Personal:

5’9”

Started playing golf at the age of 9.

Credits her parents and two brothers, Hunter and Bryan Vickers, as the individuals most influencing her career.

Qualified for the Tour on her first attempt.

Amateur:

She took part in more than 100 amateur events, winning 60 percent of the time.

Lincicome was a star on the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) circuit, winning three events.

In 2004, she won the Harder Hall Invitational and advanced to the round of 16 at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship.

Lincicome competed in the 2004 U.S. Women’s Open and led after the first round before finishing 55th.  She also played in the State Farm Classic in 2004 as an amateur, finishing in a tie for 66th.

2004:

Turned professional in December; tied for 20th at the LPGA

Final Qualifying Tournament to earn exempt status for the 2005 LPGA season.

2005:

Recorded a season-best finish at the ShopRite LPGA Classic, where she tied for 18th.

Led the Tour with a 270.3-yard driving-distance average.

2007:

Came from four strokes back to earn her second career LPGA victory at the Ginn OPEN. (Remember this fact) In Short… Everyone knew Brittany had what it took to be a Super Star on the Tour.

Brittany didn’t have enough points to qualify for The ANNIKA driven by Gainbridge outright, so she began a letter writing campaign to the powers to be at Pelican, explaining her retirement plans and her hope to receive a “Sponsor’s Exemption” to play The ANNIKA in front of the “Hometown” crowd and her family one more time. When she received the email from the club that they had excepted her request… the tears began to flow, and she

Beverly Wise

knew she had to be ready to play this special moment.

Her husband, Dewald Gouws, caddied for her this week. Her comment was, “He is never on my bag… this was strange enough.”

But, with her 2 young girls coming on Sunday Dewald gave up the bag to her normal caddie to make the loop for the final day. All the family were following Brittany. Then it all happened on the 18th tee.

Excitement was waiting for her on the 18th tee on Sunday… her finally round. Her caddie scurried off the 17th quite quickly, Brittany mentioned. When she got to the 18th green… there was her dad… ‘Inside the Ropes’ with the Caddie apron on… ready to go up the 18th hole for the final time.

Brittany explained after the final putt was made… “I wanted to make a birdie for dad on the 18th to end my career, but it just didn’t happen.” “He was with me on the bag at most of my amateur events and he helped me start my career by looping for me. He was even on the bag when I won my first event

in 2006.” Lincicome explained, “there was a point walking up the 18th fairway… neither of us could look at each other… or we would both start crying again.”

It is truly special to be so

close to the action and see this all happening… taking this bittersweet moment of a retirement walk for the final time, and sharing it with the ones that got it all started 30-years ago.

Team England Wins The Spirit International Amateur Golf Combined Championship

Team England captured gold at

The Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship at the topranked Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas. England finished with a record 44-under par score in the three-day event. Korea and Spain tied for the silver at 39-under, surpassing the 54hole scoring record of 38-under set by the United States in 2015.   This is the third overall Combined Team Championship for England. They also won the gold in 2005 and 2007.

Captained by Stephen Burnett, Team England was led by Alabama junior Dominic Clemons, LSU junior Matthew Dodd-Berry, Ohio State freshman Nellie Ong and Arizona State sophomore Patience Rhodes. The men shot 28-under par and the women finished at

16-under for the tournament.

“44-under sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? It’s just a great week,” said Burnett. “That’s the score you need to have to win an event like this. They were awesome, absolutely awesome and we are honored to win this wonderful event. We look forward to being back in two years to defend our championship.”

England’s men’s team also shared first place in the Men’s Team Competition with Mexico, which was led by UCLA senior Omar Morales and University of Arkansas freshman Gerardo Gomez, who had a sizzling six birdies and an eagle in the final round. Team Australia finished in third place.

Denmark’s women, North Carolina State freshman Marie Madsen and New Mexico State junior Emma Bunch, captured a two-stroke victory over Spain. Madsen had three birdies and an eagle in her last five holes

to spur the winning effort.

Team USA finished 8th in the combined team competition with a final score of 32-under. The men, led by Tommy Morrison, a junior at The University of Texas, and University of North Carolina senior David Ford, finished in fourth place and the women, featuring University of Southern California freshman Jasmine Koo and 15-year-old Asterisk Talley, tied for 13th in the 20-team field. Threetime Spirit gold medalist Nathan Smith was Team USA’s captain.   The 11th edition of The Spirit brought together 20 countries consisting of teams of two males and two females. The teams play a 54-hole four-ball stroke play competition with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals presented to the top three finishers in each competition. The event was founded in 2011 by Corby Robertson Jr., owner of Whispering Pines, as a celebration of goodwill through the game of golf.

Kentucky’s Kelly WIlliams Honored as PGA of America Executive of the Year

Kelly Williams, the 2024 PGA of America Golf Executive of the Year, has been a driving force behind the transformation of Greenbrier Golf & Country Club in Lexington, Kentucky. Having worked at the club in various roles since he was just seventeen years old, Williams has been instrumental in evolving the facility from a small golf-only venue into one of the premier private clubs in the region. Under his leadership, Greenbrier’s membership grew from 275 to 600, and the club saw significant improvements, including a renovated clubhouse, a rejuvenated 18-hole championship golf course, an expanded swimming complex,

and the recent addition of a 16,000-square-foot lifestyle center.

Williams attributes much of the club’s success to careful planning, communication, and a strong team. “The secret to our capital improvements is that our ownership group has been extremely conservative over the years and entered into every capital project from a position of financial health and strength,” Williams explains. By ensuring low-risk investments and involving members in decision-making, he helped complete these projects without burdening the membership with major assessments. Williams’ career has paralleled

the growth of Greenbrier. He credits the club’s owners, Morrie and Larry Hart, for recognizing his work ethic and helping him develop his management skills. His rise from managing golf cars to becoming the club’s General Manager reflects his dedication and passion.

Despite his accolades, Williams is quick to share the credit with his team. “The award may have my name on it, but it takes a dedicated team to accomplish what we have at Greenbrier,” he says. Recognizing the support of his staff and family, Williams’ leadership continues to guide Greenbrier toward a bright future, making him a standout in the golf industry.

The South Florida PGA Foundation presented a check in the amount of $127,500 to Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida on Tuesday, December 10th. This contribution, raised during the inaugural West Coast Play Yellow Birdie Bash, will help support local children’s healthcare initiatives and ensure critical resources for families in Southwest Florida.

The ceremony brought together South Florida PGA Foundation Board Members, hospital representatives, patient families, and event participants to celebrate the impact of the successful event held on October 21st at The Glades Golf & Country Club.

Alba, a Golisano Children’s Hospital patient who spoke at the Birdie Bash, was among those in attendance. Just four days after sharing her inspiring story at the event, Alba rang the hospital’s bell, signifying her victory over cancer. Thanks to the care received at Golisano Children’s Hospital and the support of events like the Birdie Bash, children like Alba can overcome unimaginable challenges.

“Golf is the more charitable sport in the world, and today is a great example of why that is the case, it is due to the philanthropy done at the grassroots level, by PGA Professionals nationwide. We look forward to many more days

like today, being able to support our local community through golf, and change the lives of those facing medical hardship,” Tom Wildenhaus, PGA - South Florida PGA Foundation President.

During the Play Yellow Birdie Bash, 36 PGA of America Professionals participated in an 81-hole team challenge, with each birdie supported by donor pledges. The event raised over $250,000 to benefit Golisano Children’s Hospital and the South Florida PGA Foundation.

Since its inception, the Play Yellow initiative, spearheaded by Jack and Barbara Nicklaus in partnership with Children’s

A Turf Pirate's Journal $down by the water's edge $

Greetings Turf Pirates and welcome back to the mystical shores of the Galactic Headquarters of the Ancient and Honorable Tribe of Turf Pirates. December is a great month to be a Turf Pirate, and it is a time of reflection as we all think back on the years and post yet another season of success within the golf/turf industry, especially for the Bentgrass guys in the south. If you are a faithful reader then you are aware that we have relocated from Texas back to North Georgia, literally down by the river. Our new base of operations is on the North Oconee River, just northeast of Athens for those are not familiar with the area. Water big or small makes turf and Turf Pirates better, inside, and out. There will be a few campfires on the sand bars and stories will be told and memories made. This month’s photo is from a great waterside project we did in Dallas flying a dredge boat across 14 CWV!

This month’s spin is about the journey from novice to elder in this golf and turf industry and it revolves around my most recent move back to the river. I started my love of turf on our family farm in Indian Creek, Georgia literally on the creek. I had always hoped to finish my career living on a creek or river and am blessed that it has come to pass. It has been a journey through the last 39 years serving as head Greenkeeper at four clubs (three in Georgia, one in Texas) but I have traveled to many countries in my various green roles and now serving as a Regional Vice President of Agronomy for Invited Clubs travel is a large part of my job but returning to a riverside home in Georgia was always the aspiration.

You see Turf Pirates, the long green line of our lives and careers can sometimes be overwhelming and many who are called to purpose let loose the vision and give up. It is after all a narrow way. I want to encourage you to always reverse-engineer your life, especially your career. Faith is a powerful thing. I did not see the many turns that would come nor the times that help arrived just as I needed it, but I always believed things would work out. I believed the course would improve, the business would be profitable, and I would one day stand in a place that I had only seen in my mind, down by the river. We were actively seeking this last home of ours for more than a year. We looked at many places and almost settled for something much less, but fate stepped in (shout out to my boss, Jay Abbott for keeping me in the right frame of mind). We bought the property having never seen it personally, I reached out to an old friend (John Grist) accomplished Turf and Tree Pirate to meet our realtor and see of this was indeed the place. It was

and the network of Turf Pirates proved its salt again, thank you John and Emily Grist and our most excellent realtor Greg Goad. Now to the heart of things. Life is precious and our industry is sometimes tough and to navigate the waters we must be deliberate and full of detailed vision. Where are you now in your life and career Turf Pirates? Reflect and plan to be exactly where you choose to be, do not drift. Know that there will be moments of doubt and a bit of fear but carry on, work hard, ask for help, and see the details of your perfect world coming together and build it and help others build theirs. There is a synergy created when all the elements come together, and my hope is you find happiness and peace on your long green journey. If you need me, I will be touring golf courses and helping Turf Pirates reach their goals and dreams. There will also be plenty of hickory arrow shafts flying and campfires burning across the North Oconee. Until our paths cross again Turf Pirates, Merry Christmas, safe travels, and God Speed.

Dennis D. Lyon, CGCS Retired,

has been selected to receive the 2024 Leo Feser Award from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). Now in its 47th year, the award is presented annually to the author of the best superintendentwritten article published in Golf Course Management, the association’s flagship publication, during the previous year.

Lyon, who served as GCSAA president in 1989 and is a 51-year member of the association, was superintendent/manager of golf for the city of Aurora, Colo., for 37 years before he retired in 2010. He won GCSAA’s Col. John Morley Award in 2013 and the USGA Green Section Award in 2011.

Lyon’s article, “Reflections of a veteran golf course superintendent,” appeared in the May 2024 issue of GCM. In it, he shared some of the lessons he had learned from nearly 40 years in the business.

“I did hear from some people who used to work with me,” Lyon said. “Four or five texted and said, ‘Great article.’ I’m just glad some people found it interesting or useful.”

Lyon’s story imparted his take on leadership, communication and life. He drew on his 37-year career with Aurora Golf — which during his tenure grew from one course to seven — and cautioned, “This experience, although successful, included many mistakes, miscalculations and questionable decisions.”

Lyon will officially receive the award during the 2025 GCSAA Conference and Trade Show in San Diego. He will also have his name engraved on a plaque that is permanently displayed at GCSAA headquarters in Lawrence, Kan.

“Throughout his more than half a century in the association, Dennis has been a consummate leader,” GCSAA CEO Rhett Evans said. “Even in his retirement, he’s continuing to show his dedication to GCSAA and his fellow superintendents by sharing his wisdom in his article.

Congratulations to Dennis on winning the Leo Feser Award. It’s a well-deserved addition to your long list of honors.”

The Leo Feser Award honors the late Leo Feser, a pioneering golf course superintendent and a charter member of GCSAA. Feser is credited with keeping the association’s official publication alive during the Great Depression. For three years, 1933-36, he wrote, edited, assembled and published each issue of The Greenkeepers’ Report — as the association’s magazine was known then — from his home in Wayzata, Minn. The award was first presented in 1956 and has been given annually since 1977. Members of GCSAA’s GCM Editorial Board Task Group select the winner of the award each year.

Windsor Achieves Audubon International Designation For Commitment To Sustainable Golf Practices

Certification Received On the Heels of Appointing New Director of Agronomy to Continue Praised Environmental Efforts

Windsor, the 472-acre private

sporting and residential community on the barrier island of Vero Beach along Florida’s Treasure Coast, today announced that its 18-hole championship golf course designed by legendary golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr. has been certified an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, joining an elite group of the world’s most sustainable golf clubs. The designation follows a comprehensive evaluation of Windsor’s environmental standards for the golf course and reflects the club’s dedication to enhancing the area’s natural surroundings and strengthening the local wildlife habitat. The course is now one of only 900 courses in the world to hold this certification.

The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program, developed by Audubon International, guides golf courses in protecting the environment and preserving golf’s natural heritage. The path to certification includes a review of environmental planning, wildlife and habitat management, outreach and education, chemical use reduction, water conservation, and water quality management. The club’s accomplishments include expanding native vegetation, removing invasive plant species, providing quality water habitat, and conducting water quality testing.

“We are honored to receive recognition as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary,” said Betsy Hanley, CEO and President of Torwest, Inc., and President of Windsor Real Estate, Inc. “This certification directly aligns with Windsor’s mission to incorporate innovative sustainable practices into our residential community, and we look forward to launching new programming initiatives in line with Audubon International.”

“Windsor Florida has shown a strong commitment to its

environmental program. They are to be commended for their efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife on the golf course property,” said Christine Kane, CEO at Audubon International.

Leading sustainability efforts at the golf course is Windsor’s newly appointed Director of Agronomy, Jared Nemitz. Coming to Windsor from The Ford Field & River Club, Nemitz brings a wealth of experience and a passion for excellence in golf course management. He holds a B.S. and M.S. in Agronomy from Purdue University, and

Windsor’s newly appointed Director of Agronomy, Jared Nemitz

has 25 years of experience at premier courses including St. Andrews Links, the Honors Course, and Chevy Chase Club.

Nemitz has led certification efforts with the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary for Golf designation at several courses, was recognized by the USGA Green Section for putting green management and served as an annual presenter at industry education conferences including the American Society of Agronomy, Georgia Environmental Conference, USGA Regional meetings, GCSAA Golf Industry Show and other state association meetings.

“We are thrilled to welcome Jared Nemitz to our team at Windsor,” said Ryan Skipton, Windsor’s Director of Golf. “With his extensive background and dedication to maintaining top-tier playing conditions, we are confident that he will make significant contributions to the already outstanding golf program at Windsor.”

Windsor’s 18-hole golf course designed by legendary golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr. initially opened in 1991. In 2019, Jones Jr. returned with his team to carry out an extensive renovation of the 120-acre course that recaptured the original

design intent and updated golf holes in concert with today’s game. To reduce the golf club’s carbon footprint, the renovation introduced various environmentally conscious features including a more drought-tolerant variety of Bermuda grass, a reduction in the areas needing mowing, and the installation of a new state-of-theart irrigation system. The Windsor course allows all members to play at their own pace, as golfers enjoy a no-tee time policy.

The storied seaside community of Windsor is also known for its enviable real estate. The club recently launched its final phase of development, the North Village, which will marry Windsor’s beloved Anglo-Caribbean aesthetic with a heightened commitment to sustainability. Stretching 47 acres alongside the Indian River Lagoon, the North Village offers 34 homesites and six row houses and features 26.5 acres of natural area and 9.7 acres of lake and estuary.

George M. Steinbrenner Field Awarded “2024 Florida Celebration® Sports Field of the Year”

George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, the spring training home of the New York Yankees, has been awarded the “2024 Florida Celebration® Sports Field of the Year.” This award is given annually to maintenance professionals who excel in managing Celebration Bermudagrass on golf courses and sports fields.

Sod Solutions presented Ritchie Anderson, Director of Grounds, and his crew with the award at the 2024 Florida Turfgrass Association Conference in December.

George M. Steinbrenner Field was built in 1996 and underwent renovation in 1999. By 2010, Anderson took on the renovations himself, choosing Celebration Bermudagrass after seeing its success at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ facilities. It has been in use ever since.

“It grows fast, so you’ve got to be able to control it. I can speed it up or I can slow it down. Celebration’s got deep roots. It roots well. It’s really a good grass once I’ve learned to perfect my craft at it,” Anderson said.

Anderson oversees the field for Major League Spring Training and

75 home games during the Tampa Tarpons’ Low-A Rookie Ball season. The field also hosts various events, and Anderson ensures it’s always prepared for every occasion.

In 2023, the field underwent a full renovation, including new drainage, new irrigation and moving 6,000 tons of sand.

Celebration Bermudagrass was selected again for its resilience and performance. The turfgrass was contract-grown by Superior Turf, with Sod Solutions Professionals managing the project.

Anderson’s career at George M. Steinbrenner Field began in 1997 as a mechanic. Since mechanic work wasn’t always available, he transitioned to groundskeeping, mowing and raking, until he became the director of grounds.

“Celebration will slow down when it gets cold, so the mowing stops when the temperature changes. It’s got great dark green color and it recovers well up and down the sidelines where we have a lot of stress.”

Anderson and his crew manage all aspects of the field in-house, from laser grading to top dressing, addressing issues immediately.

He explained spectators often praise the grass’s appearance, asking how he stripes it or why it’s so green. “We get a lot of good praise on keeping it in tip-top shape and people seem to like it. They love the Yankees, so I’m proud of what I do. It pays off at the end of the day when we come out here and look at this green heaven, and everything’s good. We love our job,” Anderson added.

Previous winners of this award include Florida Atlantic Softball Stadium, The Country Club of Naples, Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, The Club Pelican Bay in Naples, Admiral’s Cove in Jupiter, Orlando FC’s Exploria Stadium, North Palm Beach Country Club, Harbour Ridge Yacht and Country Club and Country Club of Florida.

Michigan State University, Dorland is an active member of the MSU Turf Club and received the C.E. “Tuck” and Becky Tate Turfgrass Scholarship, administered by the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences. He was also a 2023 GCSAA Scholars Competition Scholars Award winner.

In addition to school, Dorland has served as an irrigation technician at the Kalamazoo (Mich.) Country Club; interned at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y.; and interned at The Club at Seven Canyons in Sedona, Ariz.

“Being awarded the Mendenhall Scholarship is a true honor,” Dorland said. “It’s a very surreal experience, and I could not be more grateful. The scholarship will help immensely when it comes to pursuing my educational goals. I thank GCSAA for giving students an opportunity to be exposed to all aspects of the turf world. There are so many different paths that turf can lead you down, and the GCSAA does a wonderful job providing a platform for everyone to succeed.”

The top award of the GCSAA Scholars Competition is named for the late Chet Mendenhall, who was a charter member of GCSAA, a past president (1948) and recipient of the association’s Distinguished Service Award (1986).
