A LEAGUE OF HER OWN

Barbara moved with her husband to Ave Maria, but lost him to cancer a little over a year ago. “He was the golfer. I’d just ride along and caddy. But I started to play, and then I started a league.” She is the leader of the Ladies Wednesday Golf League at Panther Run. “It started with four of us who wanted to play together. It’s grown to about 140. We really have a great time. You don’t have to have a handicap, just a good attitude. Everyone is very supportive.”

Getting out there with friends and making new ones is part of life in Ave Maria— A Big Kind of Small Town.

STYLE FOR MILES —

CHOOSING THE MECCA COURSE THAT SUITS YOUR STYLE OF PLAY

When you play golf in Gaylord, you’ve got options – options to choose the style of course that you want to play.

At Gaylord Golf Club alone, you can challenge yourself from the black tees at over 6,500 yards or you can blast away from the orange tees at 3,600 yards. The par-5 17th hole, for example, plays anywhere from 505 to just 241 yards, with blue, white and green tees in between!

Now, multiply that diversity by all 17 Gaylord Golf Mecca courses –including some with gold, red, yellow and silver tees, too – and there’s fun for everyone, from bogey golfers and beginners all the way up to scratch players and pros. As you book places to stay and play in the Gaylord Golf Mecca this upcoming season, here’s a rundown of courses to help you choose which ones are best for you:

The Showstoppers

For the ultimate mix of challenging golf and northern Michigan scenery, make a tee time at Black Lake Golf Club north of Gaylord in Onaway. The tree-lined course owned by the United Auto

Black Lake Golf Club
Gaylord Golf Club

Workers and designed by renowned golf architect Rees Jones has been ranked by Golf Digest among the top 100 public courses in the country, and among the top 10 in Michigan. It’s also one of the top 50 courses in America for women.

Next on our list is the Jones Masterpiece at Treetops Resort, which has one of the most difficult slope ratings in the entire Midwest. The magnificent course overlooking the scenic Pigeon River Valley was built by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Jones, who designed many courses that have hosted major professional championships and Ryder Cups, came up with the Masterpiece

and called it his crowning glory.

The woods and elevation changes on the Masterpiece make it the resort’s most challenging course, and also perhaps its most scenic. The view from the par-3 sixth hole, which drops some 120 feet from tee to green, is what inspired the Treetops name.

Equally as stunning as Black Lake and the Masterpiece is The Tribute at Otsego Resort, designed by PGA Tour winner and longtime golf announcer Gary Koch. With viewpoints where you can see for miles high above the Sturgeon River Valley, The Tribute really showcases Gaylord’s overall elevation, which is the highest of any region in the Lower Peninsula. The Tribute is carved through the forest and plays as long as 7,347 yards from the black tees, making it the longest in the Gaylord Golf Mecca.

The Resort Courses

While the Jones Masterpiece should be on every golfer’s must-play list, Treetops also has three more great 18-hole courses to experience plus the iconic Threetops 9-hole par-3 course. Both the Signature (designed by Rick Smith) and the Premier  (designed by Tom Fazio) are plenty challenging yet forgiving at the same time. The Signature has wide, tree-lined fairways with tricky greens and beautiful views, and the Premier has bigger greens and even wider fairways that offer a bit more margin for error. Meanwhile, the Tradition (by Smith) is more of an old-school, walkable links course with wooden pins, pennant flags and not nearly as many places

Monarch at Garland Lodge and Golf Resort
The Tribute at Otsego Resort

to hit your ball into trouble.

Garland Lodge & Golf Resort offers diversity, too, with four different courses including Swampfire, with water visible on 16 holes, and Monarch, which is the second-longest course in the Gaylord Golf Mecca at more than 7,200 yards from the tips. Fountains and Reflections, the resort’s shortest course, each have an unusual layout with six par-fives, six par-fours and six par-threes. Another amazing resort in the Gaylord Golf Mecca, Otsego Resort, also has nice variety right on site. After playing The Tribute you can enjoy The Classic, a walkable parkland design that’s one of the original courses in Gaylord and still a fine illustration

of the Mecca’s varied terrain and excellent conditions.

Walkable Courses

In addition to The Classic and Tradition at Treetops, there are a few other courses in the Gaylord Golf Mecca where you can walk instead of taking a cart, if you prefer. Lakes of the North Golf Course in Mancelona features two nines with different personalities, one a traditional links style and the other an “Up North” feel with woods and water. Another is Indian River Golf Club, which recently marked its 100th anniversary with a layout that combines an open prairie with Northwoods splendor.

Both Michaywé – The Pines and Gaylord Golf Club also

permit walking at certain times of the week. The Pines is another one of the original Gaylord Golf Mecca courses. Challenging enough to have hosted the Michigan Amateur championship multiple times, The Pines also offers yellow discs in the fairway where kids and lessexperienced adults can tee off and play at a shorter distance. Rounding out the 17 courses is Black Bear Golf, a new addition to the Mecca for 2025. Under new ownership, this Scottish links-style course is blended with traditional tree-lined holes and large green-scapes. Variety. Quality. Quantity. Endless options set the Gaylord Golf Mecca apart to offer the ultimate golf destination, 38 years strong!

It was supposed to be the usual frolicking hit and giggle, postseason and pre-Christmas family-oriented gathering at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, but as we know, competitive sports are unpredictable.

The 2024 PNC Championship would end with a dramatic playoff between Bernhard & Jason Langer versus Tiger & Charlie Woods after each team fired a record low 36-hole total of 28 under par.

Bernhard watched Tiger, Charlie and his own 24-year-old son miss their eagle attempts before delivering one of his own to capture a record sixth PNC Championship title, while Jason claimed his fourth.

“It was a special day. I mean, what a treat to play with Tiger and Charlie. Charlie is an awesome player. You know, amazing to witness that hole-in-one on 4. A real honor for me to play with Tiger,” said Jason. “It was tight all day. We were within a shot either way from the very beginning, and he (Dad) really played well. I put a little bit of pressure on him in certain spots, and he made a bunch

Langer Tames Tiger Resurgence at Orlando’s PNC Championship

of putts and was so consistent. It was a special day, won’t forget it.”

It was an amazing performance by the 67-year-old two-time Masters winner, and it earned a tip of the cap from Tiger.

“It’s incredible, right? The driver he hit out of the bunker on 14, that was one of the best shots I’ve ever seen,” said Woods.

There were not one, but two holes-in-one in the final round.  Charlie Woods got his on the

par-3, 4th hole with a 7-iron from 176 yards for his first ace.

“It was awesome having Dad there. That was so much fun. It was just a perfect 7-iron, little cut in there. Of course, never got to see it go in, so that sucks. But that’s all right,” said Charlie.

About a half an hour after Charlie’s good fortune, Paddy Harrington, son of two-time British Open champion Padraig, made an ace. It came on the

par-3, eighth hole from 185 yards and with a 6 iron before quite a celebration on the tee box.

“I’ve never been so excited in my life. It was a great shot, which is nice. You know, I know my first holein-one wasn’t a spectacularly good shot. That was perfect swing, perfect shot, and when it went in, I’ve never experienced anything like it, the

joy of it. Because obviously you can win tournaments and do that, and that’s a different sort of pressure and excitement,” said Paddy.

Team Harrington finished in a tie for third place at 23-underpar along with the dynamic duos of Vijay and Qass Singh and David and Brady Duval.

2024 marked the 13th year that

PNC has served as title sponsor and early in tournament week announced it was extending its support until 2032. The event, while PGA TOUR sanctioned, is jointly owned by IMG and NBC Sports and is a marketing vehicle for the host resort and others associated with it. Now in its 27th year of existance, it has evolved from the original father and son event. Each qualifying player must have won a major championship or The Players Championship to be eligible for an invitation to participate with a family member.

T h e Y E A R !

From Fairways to Fashion: How NGA is Changing the Rules of the Game

Step aside, traditional, boring fashion — No Girls Allowed (NGA) is here to revolutionize golf fashion and fair play in one bold move. Founded by the fearless and forward-thinking Holly Steele, NGA is not just a clothing line; it is a movement.

The brand’s tagline, “Redefining rules. Redefining style,” perfectly captures its mission to promote fairness and equality in traditionally male-dominated sports while delivering bold, edgy, and functional designs tailored for today’s modern woman.

The inspiration for NGA’s journey is as striking as its apparel. Holly Steele, a trailblazing entrepreneur, found herself face-to-face with an outdated status quo at a private golf and tennis club. When she was turned away from a “men’sonly” bar while on the course, the inconvenience sparked more than frustration — it ignited a call to action. Holly was not interested in invading or tearing down men’s spaces, but she saw a glaring need for women’s spaces to offer equal amenities and comfort. Why should women settle for less when they deserve the VIP treatment, too?

Fueled by this realization, Holly created No Girls Allowed, a brand that empowers women through clothing designed with their needs and style in mind. The name is cheeky and intentionally provocative, a playful nod to the

Holly Steele

exclusionary attitudes women have faced in sports like golf and tennis. But it’s also a clever reference to the signs often made by little boys for their clubhouse doors, declaring “no girls allowed.” By reclaiming this phrase, NGA is flipping the script and creating a brand that invites everyone to rethink outdated norms and join the movement to help rewrite the rules.

This commitment to equality is matched by NGA’s commitment to style. The brand’s upcoming collection, premiering at the PGA Show in Orlando this January, is a game-changer. Expect fresh, modern takes on golf and tennis attire — from vibrant, pattern-forward polos to versatile skirts and dresses. The NGA line introduces innovative pieces like “Unders” shorts and “Ta-Tas” bras that seamlessly layer under outfits, offering comfort, style, and a pop of color or pattern. With interchangeable designs, one skirt can transform into multiple looks, letting women express their individuality both on and off the course.

What makes NGA stand out is not just the eye-catching designs or the functionality of its apparel, it is the underlying message: women belong here, and they deserve nothing but the best. Holly has taken what could have been a moment of discouragement and turned it into a platform for empowerment — one that blends advocacy with aesthetics.

As NGA prepares to debut at the PGA Show, excitement is in the air. Holly’s vision for the brand is clear: “We’re not here to fight the old; we’re here to elevate the new. Our goal is to create spaces, both in sports and beyond, where everyone feels celebrated, confident, and stylish.”

With its bold mission and boundary-pushing designs, NGA is making noise — and looking fabulous while doing it! Ready to join the movement? Head to www. NGAStyle.com to learn more and get your hands on the collection that is redefining golf fashion. Let’s redefine rules, redefine style, and have a little fun along the way. After all, this Diamond is a girl’s best friend.

Where did you grow up?

In Orlando, Fl with my mother, father ,and three older brothers. I was definitely not a girly-girl growing up. I spent a lot of time at Disney as my mom worked there, so it felt like my backyard playground.

Which group of people did you associate most with in high school?

I was friends with everyone in high school. Never really clung to any one group.

Do you enjoy playing golf? Are there any golfers in your family?

I try and play golf once a week, time permitting. My husband is a golfer as well as our two-year old son. He golf’s all day everyday. It’s the most amazing thing to watch.

What do you feel makes this club special?

Southern Dunes is one of the most visited courses in Central Florida. The greens are stunning and so beautifully maintained. Who wouldn’t want to golf here!

If you weren’t a cart girl, what would you be doing?

I have my real estate license and enjoy helping families find their perfect homes in my spare time.

What is the funniest thing you’ve ever seen on the golf course?

I’d have to say it was while golfing with my husband and I accidentally hit my tee shot off the toe and hit him in the back. Luckily, he was not injured. He laughed.

What type of music do you prefer?

I absolutely love music from the 70,80’s it’s what I grew up on and am not a fan of new music. My favorite would have to be the eagles.

What hobbies do you enjoy?

I love crafting and building. I grew up doing home renovations and love to build tables and renovate kitchens. The design part is probably the most enjoyable but I also love doing the hard labor part as well.

Favorite comedian?

Favorite charity to support?

My husband I raise money for Tee it up for the troops which has been helping disabled veterans for twenty years. We go out on golf courses a few times a week and host a par three challenge game. I personally enjoy participating in this as my husband is an army veteran.

The Pro

The Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida was the site for a unique and exciting professional golf tournament. Everyone playing was a professional in sport, but not golf.

Superstars from the MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL competed for bragging rights, and if you thought there was trash-talking going on (all in good faith) between the competitors, you are correct. Some of your sports heroes from yesteryear were playing in a match play competition on the famed Copperhead Course.

Major League Baseball All-Stars, Cy Young Award Winners, and National Baseball Hall of Famers were in attendance – John Smoltz, Joe Carter, Brian McCann, and Vince Coleman were just a few of the big names contributing to their team’s success.

Team NFL included Jerome Bettis, Mark Rypien, Ryan Succop, and Brett Kern, among other NFL superstars.

The National Hockey League

team was comprised of Stanley Cup Champions and Hockey Hall of Famers like Jeremy Roenick, Brett Hull, Joe Pavelski, and Brad May.

Team NBA, NBA Champs, Hall of Famers, and some of the tallest golfers on the course included Danny Ainge, Toni Kukoc, Ray Allen, and Nick Van Exel.

The (3) three-day tournament included Scramble, Shamble, and Match Play formats. The first day

was a 2 vs 2 Scramble Format, Day 2 was a 2 vs 2 Shamble Format, and Day 3 was 1 on 1 Match Play Format. The Tournament generated charitable funds supporting CFY.

Established in 1972, CFY proudly supports youth athletics programs and organizations, with an emphasis on skill-building activities, reaching over 15,000 Pinellas County children annually and expanding.

Team Baseball dominated the competition and was crowned Champions of this first-ever Pro Cup.

Ballin’ in Brunswick Isles, NC

In passing conversation, the Brunswick Islands of North Carolina often gets misconstrued as being part of Myrtle Beach, otherwise known as “The Grand Strand” or “The Dirty Myrty.” Let’s be clear: If you’re in search of strip clubs, collegiate keg parties, late night clubbing and heavy doses of commercialism, you can certainly

explore those endeavors across

the border in the Palmetto State, a mere 30 minutes south from the Brunswick Isles.

The spoken word from return visitors has the Brunswick Isles delivering on all levels from affordability to accessibility in a refined coastal setting for family and friends to unpack and unwind. With mild temperatures yearround and close proximity to the beaches, this southernmost

southeast section of NC guarantees some of the most scenic and budget friendly golf you can find anywhere on the edge of the all mighty Atlantic. With 45 miles of pristine coastline offering six different beaches and 540 holes of golf, it’s obvious why many refer to this region as “North Carolina’s Golf Coast.” A golfing gateway of up to 30 golf courses, and even better, 12 of the 30 are consolidated in a 20-mile stretch (from Calabash to Bolivia) making the daily golf commute super convenient. What’s also intriguing, is eight of those 30 facilities feature 27 holes (or more) putting a premium on variety, pace of play and of course — extra golf.

The Brunswick Plantation & Golf Resort (Calabash, NC) has been a long-standing favorite because it can fulfill all your needs from golf, lodging to dining without leaving the gated premises. The resort has over 100 1-2 bedroom villas with bright living spaces fully equipped with balconies overlooking the golf course. There are tennis courts, walking trails, two pools, a jacuzzi and two restaurants, including the all new Hickory Bistro. A pretty 27-hole setting (Dogwood, Azalea, Magnolia) designed by Byrd-Johnston, each nine is interchangeable allowing three separate 18-hole combinations.

Rivers Edge is a signature Arnold Palmer design

The resort is constantly offering incredible values on stay and play packages year-round and the pro staff will assist in coordinating other courses off campus during your stay. The plantation style clubhouse is a direct indication the property owners are committed to the ideals of southern hospitality. The entire grounds at Brunswick Plantation (1,750 acres) are in fact gardenesque as stated on the facade: “Caw Caw Land Corporation, Developer of Brunswick Plantation, has given in perpetuity, to the Smokey Mountain National Land Trust, Inc., a Conversation Easement on all of the land that comprises the 27 holes of Brunswick Plantation. The purpose of the Conservation Easement is to preserve and protect the many native species of trees, shrubs, herbs and the many species of wildlife located in the area. Another purpose is to preserve the scenic views of the creeks and open vistas associated with the golf course.”

The Pearl Golf Links (Calabash, NC) sits on 900 acres quietly positioned on the coastal banks of the Brunswick Marshland in the center of Calabash. This 1987 Dan Maples design is another 27-hole facility that will broaden your scope while you get in on great savings.

The East, West and North nines

are distinctly different from one another, yet comprise three unique 18-hole combinations on Mini Verde Bermuda greens. The East nine places an emphasis on accuracy off the tee while the North nine allows more generous landing zones. The West nine is a mixture of both, but what they all have in common is being cut through a wooded forest on gently sloping terrain void of real estate. Make no doubt about it, the

Pearl is a gem and you should book it each and every time.

Carolina National Golf Club (Bolivia, NC) a 1999 Fred Couples signature design is clearly at first glance one of the premier places to peg it in all of Brunswick County. An exceptional 27-hole experience alongside the Lockwood Folly River will at times command your attention to admire the live time beauty of actual surroundings

Carolina National Golf Club is one of the premier places to play in the Brunswick Isles.
Brunswick County has 45 miles of pristine coastline.

sealed amongst mature pines. Each nine is named after an indigenous bird (Egret, Heron, Ibis) often encountered during a casual round. Same 27-hole scenario at Carolina National applies like The Pearl and Brunswick Plantation – each nine is as good as the next and can be played in any particular fashion. With six sets of tees tipping out over 7,000 yards, Carolina National has been rated one the best on the eastern seaboard. As a semi–private club that offers advanced daily tee times to the public, you can bank on consistent conditions evidenced by some of the purest Champion Bermuda putting surfaces you can find in the area. Other clubs in Brunswick with more than 18 holes are: Sandpiper Bay Golf & CC (27), Thistle Golf Club (27) and Sea Trail Golf Resort & Convention Center (54 holes) all located in Sunset Beach. Ocean Ridge Plantation in Ocean Isle Beach trumps them all with four courses at 72 holes.

“The mark of a great golf course is how many holes can you remember a week or two after you played it the first time,” says Chris Jennings, a local low handicapper who frequents Carolina National on annual trips. “There’s a handful of par 3s out here that look like a painting you can put on a wall. Most every time my group and I come out here, we play all 27 holes. We play 18 in the morning, break for lunch and

drinks then head back out on the third nine and play a Skins game in the afternoon. It has never failed us.”

Rivers Edge Golf Club (Shallotte, NC) is as bold and full of character much like its legendary designer -- the late great Arnold Palmer. Any product Mr. Palmer attaches his name to is generally topflight and well thought out. Framed out along the Shallotte River, Rivers Edge is perhaps the most stunning layout in terms of continual ebb and flow scenery in the entire Brunswick area. Voted the 2023 golf course of the year by the Myrtle Beach Golf Course Owners Association, River’s Edge is also arguably the sternest

test in the area as 12 of its 18 holes contain some kind of water hazard so select the correct tees ranging from 6033-6909 yards. Many of the greens are bulkheaded requiring precise approach shots time and again. Anyone who can navigate Rivers Edge without rinsing one ball has really achieved something remarkable. It is also here in which “Arnie’s Revenge” the infamous par 5 9th hole resides and can easily ruin a good round if you get careless. The club just finished modernizing its clubhouse and is also in the midst of completing a robust bulkhead project in preparation for the upcoming 2025 season.

Crow Creek Golf Club (Calabash, NC) established in 2000 designed by Rick Robbins holds the distinction as being the only 18-hole public course in Brunswick to showcase V8 bentgrass greens. The course is both well-conditioned and underrated providing players of all abilities an entertaining time especially on the back 9 where shot making intensifies into some severely sloped greens. Right in the center of the Calabash fishing village, Crow Creek is a cool spot to play before or after you hit the beach.

There are numerous water sport activities from fishing to kayaking to crabbing and wonderful seafood dining options up and down Rte. 17.  Oyster Rock Waterfront Seafood in Calabash is a can’t miss must for local fresh caught fish. For more information on the Brunswick Isles or those interested in booking a beach house during your stay go to ncbrunswick.com.

PGA TOUR Studios Rings in 2025 By Going Live

The PGA TOUR is redefining how it creates and distributes content with its new PGA TOUR Studios, a state-of-the-art multi-media, three-level production facility located adjacent to headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

It’s a 165,000-square-foot building broke ground in 2022 and was really put to the test with telecasts this past fall. The TOUR’s leadership says this is a pivotal next step of golf content production in a constantly changing media landscape.

“With PGA TOUR Studios now live, our team can deliver for fans new, dynamic productions that chronicle the incredible stories of our athletes in a new era of golf media,” said Rick Anderson, PGA TOUR Chief Commercial Officer. “This production studio will help usher in the next chapter for the PGA TOUR as fans around the world further guide our decision-making through their valuable feedback to our Fan Forward initiative.”

PGA TOUR Studios will soon deliver a previously announced new World Feed, produced and

created exclusively for international media rights holders and their viewers with a customized graphics package and specific cameras focused on international golfers.

This live broadcast will feature weekly on-site reporters and include up to six dedicated cameras at select FedEx Cup events, all providing increased coverage of international players, which also allows the TOUR to curate and distribute enhanced content across

its social and digital platforms.

Following its debut at THE PLAYERS in March, the World Feed will be produced for all remaining events on the 2025 schedule. The TOUR sees this as a step toward producing localized live feeds to specific countries in their native language to improve the international consumer experience.

The former PGA TOUR Entertainment facility in St. Augustine was the home for TOUR

productions since November 1997, and with the growth in popularity of professional golf came the increasing need for more technical resources to deliver a better overall experience here in the United States.

“PGA TOUR Studios is a landmark step in golf media, signaling a tangible investment to more deeply connect with our fans through energetic, compelling content that brings them further inside the ropes and closer to their favorite stars,” said PGA TOUR

Commissioner Jay Monahan. “Every new technology and forwardthinking innovation we introduce is about serving our fans and meeting them where they are, and the creative capabilities of PGA TOUR Studios will help us further that mission while showcasing the beauty of our sport.”

The brand-new facility now houses all media operations, including live production of PGA TOUR Champions, Korn Ferry Tour, more than 5,000 hours of PGA TOUR LIVE on ESPN+, as

well as an expansive roster of more than 50 original, social and digital media platforms.

PGA TOUR Studios is also home to the largest library of golf content in the world, featuring more than 170,000 videos totaling 223,000 hours of content, with the earliest being a film transfer dating back nearly a century from 1920.

With hardware and ample space to accommodate both current and future standards, PGA TOUR Studios enables the TOUR to produce creative content – even beyond the world of golf – while giving its creators freedom to experiment with the latest cutting-edge technologies.

At launch, PGA TOUR Studios features eight production rooms, eight audio control rooms and seven LED-outfitted studios, including a 270-degree LED display in Studio 1A. The studios are capable of monitoring and displaying thousands of video and audio feeds, all capturing action from up to 144 cameras or live feeds.

The completion of the campus helped the TOUR achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) BD+C Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council due to its sustainable design and operation with specific approaches to energy conservation, water use reduction and enhanced indoor air quality.

Golf the Pura Vida in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is one of the most environmentally conscious countries in the world, dedicating more than 25% of its land mass to parks, marine reserves and wildlife refuges. No wonder they have adopted the motto “Pura Vida,” which translates to “Good Life.”

Costa Rica offers temperatures

that hover between 70 and 80 degrees all year round—perfect weather for golf. There are two main seasons - the ‘dry season’ and the ‘green season,’ which starts mid-May and lasts until mid-November. Either way, you can always get in a morning round, as it only rains like clockwork

in the afternoon. There are 11 golf courses to test you, and my favourite four courses are listed below in ascending order.

#4 Valle del Sol Golf Course is an Audubon International certified course set on a plateau almost 3,000 feet above sea level with outstanding views of the surrounding Cordillera Central Mountain that form the Continental Divide. The topography is relatively flat with some fairway mounding, but beware, water comes into play on almost every hole, and the big undulations on oversized Bermuda greens can make for some dastardly pin placements. The 18th hole is the longest in the country and one of the best finishing holes you will find anywhere. Green fees are US$75 + 13% tax.

#3 Cariara Country Club is a George Fazio design. When completed in 1973, it became the first 18-hole golf course ever built in Central America. This mature parkland layout offers very tight tree-lined fairways. I’d call it “target golf on steroids,” after playing some of the toughest par-4s you will find anywhere. Cariara is a private course, but visitors

Los Suenos Marriott Ocean & Golf Resort
Valle del Sol Golf Course

can play if they book through www.teetimescostarica.com

#2 Reserva Conchal is a Robert Trent Jones II par-71 parkland design that offers great elevation changes, multiple lakes and three holes that feature ocean views. The fairways are generous off the tee, but your approach shots are much more demanding, with many being uphill to well-protected

greens. Green fees range from $155 to $175 for resort guests only.

#1 La Iguana Golf Course boasts more than 150 species of birds and monkeys on their 1,100-acre property. In 2018, they reseeded the golf course with ‘Zoyia,’ which requires much less water and half the all-natural fertilizer. The first 9 holes traverse through a rainforest valley, whereas holes 10 and 15

through 18 are open and out of the jungle. The course is tight but not as punishing as Cariari Country Club. 2025 rates are $199. What is truly impressive is that the entire 201-room Los Sueños Marriott Ocean & Golf Resort is carbon negative, which means they actually remove more carbon CO2 from the atmosphere than they are responsible for creating. It is indeed a mighty feat and one that could be replicated around the world.

Costa Rica is proud of its biodiversity and commitment to sustainability. Come live and play the ‘Pura Vita’ way.

Hills Recognized by Golf Inc. With Clubhouse of the Year and Golden Fork Honors

Historic Denver

Golf

Club continues to celebrate the opening of its new

Cherry Hills, one of America’s most historic and revered golf clubs and site of Arnold Palmer’s lone U.S. Open victory in 1960, continues to celebrate the opening of its newly renovated clubhouse by being recognized by Golf Inc. with Clubhouse of the Year and Golden Fork honors in 2024.

The historic clubhouse, originally constructed in 1923 by local Denver architects Merrill and Burnham Hoyt, was recently recognized among the Best New Clubhouses of the Year in the November/ December 2024 issue. Cherry Hills joins other top facilities, including Promontory Club in Utah and Desert Mountain in Arizona.

Golf Inc. annually recognizes The Best New Clubhouse of the Year, including private, public, and the best new renovation.

“The golf course clubhouse is the central hub around which everything revolves. It’s a home away from home, some would say. The winners for this year’s Clubhouse of the Year awards truly exemplify that sentiment, said Golf Inc. “Cherry Hills Country Club has created a unique, family friendly clubhouse that takes advantage of the mountain views

and is easy to navigate. The club has a food-centric culture, so it also has several dining options for members to enjoy.”

The stately English Tudor-style clubhouse created was timeless in its design and use of space. The building—which featured halftimber construction of wood and brick, pitched gable roof lines, and ornamental windows — offered magnificent views of Colorado’s Front Range, from Pikes Peak to the south to Longs Peak to the north.

“We are proud to be recognized among Golf Inc.’s Best New Clubhouses of the Year honorees, alongside other distinguished, deserving clubs and facilities,” said Lance Sabella, Cherry Hills Chief Operating Officer (COO).

“Since the clubhouse unveiling last year - following the significant

clubhouse

investment of time, resources, and dedication from our membership to ensure that this project was done in a first-class manner, it has been rewarding to see how quickly the Members have acclimated and enjoy the new experiences it provides. All of the exceptional new amenities, comfortable gathering spaces, and scenic Rocky Mountain views make this clubhouse incredibly special.”

Today, as members and guests enter the new clubhouse, they are greeted by a massive open hallway that flows toward large picture windows with familiar views of the Rocky Mountain vistas. The clubhouse architect, Mark Finlay, was trusted with completing a grand space that appropriately honors a club and membership that has hosted three United States Opens, two PGA Championships, three United States Amateurs, and a host of prestigious men’s and women’s national championships.

“Having the recognition of Golf Inc. and its readership is an honor,” said Finlay, President and CEO of Mark P. Finlay Architects, AIA. “Cherry Hills Country Club was a privilege to design, and its feature in two Golf Inc. award

categories means a great deal to our entire team, in addition to the overwhelming satisfaction of the membership with the final product.”

Earlier this year, the new Cherry Hills clubhouse was also awarded first place in Golf Inc’s Golden Fork Awards. “The ninth annual award recognizes the top golf facilities leading the way in dining at golf courses and clubs. Whether casual or elegant, modern, or traditional, this year’s Golden Fork honorees have two things in common: happy members and guests and strong F&B revenue growth,” Golf Inc. said. “This design feels warm but also very relevant in today’s design world,” the judges said,

referring to Cherry Hills. “The open pizza kitchen, wine wall, and inside/outside connection speak for themselves with this entry’s growth in volume.”

The impressive 97,000-square-foot clubhouse features an expansive dining area named “22” in honor of the clubhouse’s original debut. It features folding doors that retract to allow for the next best thing to an al fresco culinary experience. Touches like the design of “22” exemplifies the club’s commitment to fostering a more contemporary feel for its membership.

Elsewhere, Arnie’s, a nod to golfing legend Arnold Palmer, a former honorary member, (who became

inextricably connected to Cherry Hills with his heroic victory there at the 1960 U.S. Open), is a boutique adult dining facility featuring indoor and outdoor terrace seating, all the while paying thoughtful homage to showcasing the iconic figure Palmer came to be. The Palmer memorabilia and artwork displayed was carefully curated to highlight multiple facets of The King’s life and career. The outdoor patio offers a 180-degree view spanning the eighteenth hole to the south and the tenth hole to the north. Finally, three centrally located and vertically connected kitchens allow for improved functionality and output.

“It has been rewarding to see the genuine look of ‘Wow!’ on members’ faces,” said Sabella. “This is now a much more well-rounded clubhouse as it relates to amenities. Our two new restaurants with distinct menus provide variety in that they can experience a more casual family experience or dine in a more adult-oriented, upscale environment when entertaining friends or business associates.” For

USGA Delivers on Inclusion and Sustainability Efforts in 2024

Junior golfer development, turfgrass innovation and inclusion programs support overall strength of the golf industry

As 2024 draws to a close, the United States Golf Association (USGA) celebrates advancements made by the USGA Green Section and U.S. National Development Program as well as organizational investments in national junior golf programs and career development that helped propel golf forward.

Capitalizing on the incredible growth and momentum the game is experiencing and an appetite for innovation across the industry, the USGA proactively addressed issues important to golf’s future, with a focus on driving sustainability, accessibility and inclusion.

“This has been a landmark year for both the USGA and the game, as we’ve seen continued growth in the number of people who play, excitement for our national

championships, investments in golf course venues and a renewed commitment to ensuring the future is even stronger than our past,” said Mike Whan, USGA CEO.

“From developmental pipelines that help shape tomorrow’s leaders – both on the course and in the boardroom – to serving as the industry’s trusted advisor on water and sustainability, to making the game more accessible and diverse, the efforts put forth by the USGA and those that support us have achieved levels we’ve never reached before.”

With 45 million people who play golf in the U.S., and millions more who are involved with the game through employment, volunteerism and fandom, the work put forth by the USGA impacts nearly every individual connected to the game, helping to ensure its vitality.

Key highlights from 2024 include:

Launch of U.S. National Development Program (USNDP) to expand access for top talent:

• 72 athletes and their families received 2024 grants through USNDP, totaling more than $650,000.

• An 18-player U.S. National Junior Team was established in March 2024, representing the country’s elite junior golf talent and providing them financial support and resources to reach the highest levels of the sport.

• With our Allied Golf Associations and the PGA of America, announced the State Junior Team Program to provide a pathway for athletes within each state to compete at higher levels of the game.

Leading the Way on Golf Course

Sustainability and Innovation:

• With 47 projects in the pipeline focused on water conservation and sustainability, the USGA Green Section is proactively addressing golf’s usage of water, designed to arm golf courses with additional ways to manage resources more effectively.

• Named for the former USGA CEO, the Mike Davis Program for Advancing Golf Course Management develops and supports independent research for a healthier environment, community and playing conditions for the game of golf. Over $50 million has been invested across 800+ projects since 1983, with $1.6 million directed toward 88 current projects in 2024.

• Continued rollout and adoption of GS3, the Smartest Ball in Golf, giving superintendents more robust data to improve playing conditions by measuring putting green speed, trueness, smoothness and firmness through one easy-to-use device.

Expanding career opportunities as a pipeline to foster greater inclusion and diversity in the game:

• Buoyed by community engagement support at the 2024 U.S. Open Championship, the second cohort of the Greenkeeper Apprenticeship Program wrapped up in late December with 14 new graduates earning their Journey Worker Cards. Also, a graduate of last year’s inaugural cohort, aspiring actor turned assistant in training at Pinehurst No. 2 Erik

“Locksley” Blanchard continued his career development in golf course maintenance.

• More than 338 individuals from a broad range of academic areas of study and backgrounds pursued USGAsupported internships this year, including the Pathways Internship Program, P.J. Boatwright Jr. Internship Program and supporting championship, merchandising and other USGA functions.

Continued investment in national junior golf programs to grow the game:

• USGA IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility) Grant funding helped 28 First Tee chapters break down barriers of entry into the game within their communities, including individuals like John Long, a coach at First Tee – South Dakota doing door-to-door outreach on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

• LPGA*USGA Girls Golf celebrated a year with more women and girls in the game than ever, surpassing the milestone of one million girls impacted by the program and the global expansion of program sites.

Adaptive Golf inspires accessibility across the game:

• Spurred by the success of the U.S. Adaptive Open, seven states now offer a state championship for elite adaptive players.

• With the increased awareness of golf being accessible to players of all abilities, more First Tee chapters and Allied Golf Associations are offering recreational clinics as an

entry point, including First Tee chapters in Ohio, Virginia and Kansas who used IDEA grant funding to do so.

• To support these efforts, Allied Golf Associations have hired full-time staff and interns dedicated to launching adaptive programs, including Tyler Cashman at the Golf Association of Philadelphia and Max Togisala at the Utah Golf Association– both of whom were competitors in the 2024 U.S. Adaptive Open.

A mission-driven, nonprofit organization, the USGA invests 100 percent of its revenue back into golf. A record-setting U.S. Open Championship at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in June helped bolster the financial gain that helps fuel efforts impacting every golfer.

Among the USGA’s revenuedriving areas, the USGA Foundation and Members Program deepened engagement with key stakeholders to drive their support toward initiatives that advance sustainability and playing opportunities.

On Dec. 22, 2024, the USGA will celebrate the 130th anniversary of its founding – the latest milestone in an organization that was established to provide a common set of rules, conduct national championships, and provide a long-term, unbiased perspective for an even better future for our game – a common purpose that still guides our mission today.

The USGA will celebrate additional 2024 milestones and share its 2025 strategic initiatives at its Annual Meeting on March 1, 2025, in the Village of Pinehurst, N.C.

The Inaugural North Florida PGA HOPE Cup –

A Day of Camaraderie, Competition, and Triumph

On December 12, 2024, St. Johns Golf Club in Elkton, FL, in collaboration with the North Florida PGA, hosted the inaugural North Florida PGA HOPE Cup; a five-person Scramble tournament. This event marked a historic moment for veterans and the game of golf in the region as it brought together seven teams from PGA HOPE site locations across North Florida.

Each of the seven teams represented a unique PGA HOPE site in North Florida. Teams came from cities including Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Orlando, Melbourne, and Tampa. The atmosphere at St. Johns Golf Club was electric, filled with the buzz of friendly competition and the laughter of teammates reconnecting.

After an intense and spirited competition, the team from Jax Beach emerged victorious, claiming the inaugural North Florida PGA HOPE Cup. Their triumph was a testament to their skill, dedication, and the strong bond they shared as a team.

Jack Aschenbach, PGA Professional and team captain of the Jax Beach winning team, shared his gratitude: “The inaugural North Florida PGA HOPE

Cup was truly a grand and great experience. From the moment of check-in to our sit-down dinner together, to the final farewell, the men and women of our armed services enjoyed an exceptional experience and a day of friendly competitive golf. My team and others thanked me to no end for the support of the PGA HOPE Program and our troops. The PGA HOPE program has created new friendships that could last a lifetime, and I am honored to be a PGA HOPE Instructor.”

The day wasn’t just about crowning a champion. Veterans from all teams took the opportunity to connect, share stories, and build lasting friendships. Steve Walton, a PGA HOPE graduate and a member of the World Golf Village team, reflected on the impact of the program: “The PGA HOPE program exposed me to new and exciting opportunities. It allowed me to meet new friends of all backgrounds based on the love of golf. Because of PGA HOPE, I am officially a golf fanatic, having played over 150 rounds this year. Heck, I even got a job at a golf course to always be around the game. Thank you, PGA HOPE!”

The North Florida PGA HOPE Cup was a celebration of resilience, camaraderie, and the shared experiences of those who have served our nation. Wes Tucker, PGA, Director of Golf at St. Johns Golf Club, expressed pride in the event. “We at St. Johns Golf Club are honored to host the inaugural North Florida PGA HOPE Cup, bringing together coaches and program participants. Tommy Aycock and I took the inaugural training some years back at Jacksonville Beach Golf Club along with other Northern Chapter professionals. We found the training very inspirational. After the first session, we were convinced of the benefits and completely bought into the program. It has been an honor and privilege to be part of the program and to host the inaugural North Florida PGA HOPE Cup.”

The success of the inaugural North Florida PGA HOPE Cup is sure to pave the way for future graduate events, further strengthening the community of veterans and golfers in the region. As the program continues to grow, so will the opportunities for veterans to experience the benefits of the game we love.

South Florida PGA Professionals Shine in 2024: A History Making Year Full of Major Accomplishments

As a PGA of America Golf Professional, playing in competitive events is considered a luxury and a significant benefit of becoming a PGA Member.

The South Florida PGA administers more than 20 Section events annually, each offering a professional purse and, in special cases, an opportunity to qualify for a National or PGA TOUR event. With over 2,000 PGA Members and Associates, the SFPGA ranks second amongst the 41 PGA Sections in its number of Members and is often regarded as the Section with the best players in the country.

If that statement was ever in doubt, the accomplishments made during the 2024 calendar year are

a true testament to the amount of talent SFPGA Professionals possess.

Each year, PGA of America administers three National Championships, which PGA Members qualify for through their respective Sections. In 2024, the SFPGA Professionals claimed two of the three titles.

In late September, Alan Morin, of The Club at Ibis, won the Senior PGA Professional Championship by two shots at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Oregon. With the win, the 2021 SFPGA Hall of Fame inductee earned entry into the 2025 Senior PGA Professional Championship,

his fifth straight year qualifying for the Major Championship.

Two months later, Domenico Geminiani, of Old Corkscrew Golf Club, ran away with the National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship at PGA Golf Club, winning his second title in three years by three shots. Geminiani was well accompanied at the top of the leaderboard as four other Members finished in the top 10, including Evan Bowser (T4), Michael Kartrude (T4), Morin (T8), and Dakun Chang (T10).

Of the three National Championships, the PGA Professional Championship is considered the premiere event for PGA of America Golf Professionals as the top 20 finishers advance to the PGA Championship.

Tyler Collet, PGA of John’s Island Club, Jeremy Wells, PGA of Cypress Lake Golf Club, and Bowser of LaPlaya Golf Club all finished in the top 10, making it the first time three SFPGA Members qualified for a PGA Championship.

While making a Major Championship start is already an incredible accomplishment, Wells, who was making his second consecutive PGA Championship appearance, had his eyes set on making more Section history— advancing to the weekend.

After rounds of 69-71, the Director of Instruction at Cypress Lake Golf Club had successfully

made the cut, becoming the first SFPGA Professional to advance to the weekend at a PGA Championship in Section history. The PGA Championship was not the only Major including an SFPGA Professional, as David Ladd of Champions Club at Summerfield and Morin competed in the Senior PGA Championship. Additionally, Susan Bond Philo of PGA Magazine qualified for and competed in the U.S. Senior Women’s Open, while Mark Brown of The Yacht and Country Club competed in the U.S. Senior Open, bringing the total to seven SFPGA Professionals competing in a 2024 Major Championship.

Similar to the Ryder Cup, the PGA hosts “The PGA Cup,” a biennial contest between PGA Professionals from the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland and the PGA of America. Each team consists of 10 players, determined through a two-year point system. Wells, Matt Cahill of Seminole Golf Club, and Collet all qualified for the team, filling three of the 10 roster spots for the first time in Section history while playing key roles in an American victory.

Outside of Major participation, SFPGA Professionals have the opportunity to qualify for PGA TOUR events throughout the Section season. In 2024 alone, four Members competed in three PGA TOUR events.

After winning the 2023 South Florida PGA Rolex Player of the Year,

Collet got 2024 started by making his second consecutive start in the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches. After narrowly missing the cut, Collet traveled to Puerto Rico the following week to compete alongside Geminiani in the Puerto Rico Open on the PGA TOUR. Given his recent strong performances,

Collet broke through, made his first cut, and became the first SFPGA Member to make a cut on the PGA TOUR since 2008. A month later, SFPGA was back on TOUR as Hicks made his second consecutive Corales Puntacana Championship.

As we near the end of 2024, SFPGA Professionals are already preparing for another record-breaking 2025.

Thus far, the SFPGA will send the most Members in history to the PGA Professional Championship with 18. Hicks will make his third straight trip to the Corales Puntacana Championship and his sixth trip to PGA National for a PGA TOUR event but his first time at the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches. Andrew Filbert, PGA, will make a start at the Puerto Rico Open. On the Major side, Morin and Cantwell qualified for the 2025 Senior PGA Championship, and Heather Angell, PGA of Heritage Palm Golf and Country Club, will compete in the 2025 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

As we reflect on an incredible 2024 playing season, it is amazing to see the commitment to one’s full-time job and to representing the Section and their respective facility to the highest level throughout all the accomplishments.

A Turf Pirate's Journal

$ A Turf Pirate's Guide to Goal Setting (part one) $

Greetings Turf Pirates and welcome to the New Year! Have you plotted the course for this year’s amazing adventures yet? No worries I have a spin this month that just may help you jump the shark in 2025. Over the years Superintendents, as proven agronomic, financial, and environmental managers, have developed some unique processes that can easily guide you to personal and professional success. If you are bold and committed let’s talk a bit about goal setting or as noted in the rules (more like suggestions) of the Ancient and Honorable Tribe of Turf Pirates, you should “always have a plan.”

First, we need a basic understanding of goal setting. You are probably familiar with the SMART method of goal setting; SMART is an acronym for the basic steps for successful goal setting. They are S – Specific, M – Measurable, A – Attainable, R – Realistic and T – Timed (has a deadline). These are proven ways to guide your goal setting success and provide an excellent foundation but there is another method used by some of the most accomplished green industry professionals that you might not be familiar with. You need to establish GREEN Goals for you, your team and property. Whether

you manage a micro green space or a 400+ acre world famous green space this strategy can take you from good to great. GREEN is an acronym for G – Generational, R – Relevant, E – Easy to Start, E – Environomic and N – Networkable goals. I have used GREEN goal setting throughout my career at some amazing golf properties, but I have used it just as effectively in residential and community applications. Time to go to the next level.

First, GREEN Goals should be (G) Generational. They should have a connection beyond the present day. For example, plant an Heirloom tree, start a greens renovation with the latest turf variety, do an ROI for a full irrigation renovation, start a 40-year plan that is designed to be passed on to the next generation. This first step in establishing a GREEN goal should make you think in a larger multi-dimensional way.

GREEN Goals should be (R) Relevant. In today’s world with everything from the pandemic hangover to the economy to consider relevance is more important than ever. Are you up to speed in the latest technology? Remember the first moisture meter, advanced chemistry, and alternative fuel mower you brought to the course. Relevance and innovation are connected, help shape the future.

GREEN Goals should be (E) Easy to start. The problem with most goals or New Year’s resolutions is that while we often intend to do them, they seldom get off the ground must less sustained, so it is important that a GREEN goal be easy to start and progress smoothly. You must reverse engineer the project or process to find logical and easy to start first steps that can align to craft synergy as the process goes forward. The journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step, in the right direction.

GREEN Goals should be (E) Environomic. What is Environomics, you may ask. This is a term that I coined back in the early 1980’s that simply means that you blend your environmental plans into your financial plans to create synergy in both. GREEN goals should certainly contain a heavy dose of Environomics, for example, starting that home or farm to table garden or earning an environmental certification for the club are all good for the environment and makes economic sense as well. You should be able to quantify a value or Return on Investment with these GREEN projects/goals.

GREEN Goals should be (N) Networkable. This is sometimes hard for the introverted but to truly maximize the GREEN goal process you should make sure that your goals and projects are networkable. You should be able to share results and data with other professionals (Turf Pirates) or the community (perhaps through social media). This article is part of one of my GREEN Goals for this year. You could even, depending on the size and scope of your projects, generate GREEN public relations by having your work featured in newspapers or industry publications. I hope this information on SMART and GREEN goals will help you make 2025 your best year yet and avoid the rocks and temptation to dwell in mediocrity. Look to shape your own future Turf Pirates and let’s help each other along the way. Speaking of the future, don’t miss next month’s exciting edition of A Turf Pirates Journal where we take goal keeping even farther with LINKED goals!

Honoring Heroes with a Beautiful Landscape:

EMPIRE® Zoysia at the South Florida National Cemetery

The South Florida National Cemetery has expanded its grounds and EMPIRE® Zoysia now plays a central role in enhancing the landscape. Known for its ability to withstand heat and drought while maintaining a lush, vibrant appearance, EMPIRE Zoysia is wellsuited to South Florida’s climate. Its soft texture and resilience make it an ideal choice for such an important place of remembrance.

“We have various varieties of sod out here but EMPIRE holds up and looks a lot better. It kind of hides any imperfections in the fields,” shared Gabriel Vigil, the project

superintendent at the cemetery. “When we’re laying the sod, you’ll see roots coming out of the bottom within maybe about a week.”

The South Florida National Cemetery has expanded to include new sections such as a flag assembly area, a committal shelter, in-ground cremains, burial sections, two columbariums and several ponds. Vigil, who has been overseeing landscaping projects at the site for the past six years, said he’s worked with Celebration® Bermuda, EMPIRE and St. Augustine.

Now, they’re maintaining around 10 acres of EMPIRE Zoysia. He observes this variety as a nice,

steady, slow-growing grass. He shared that the most rewarding part of his job is creating a serene and lasting tribute for veterans. “I take great pride in creating national cemeteries for our fallen veterans who gave their lives for the country.”

“The Greatest Green Ever Played!” at Walt Disney World® Golf

It’s “The Greatest Green Ever Played!”

At least that’s what they are calling the recently introduced 18-hole putting course at Disney’s Magnolia, Palm and Oak Trail Clubhouse.

Rather than a largely flat surface, the layout has been graded to give the area new contours and elevation changes providing a more realistic and challenging putting experience. The lush Bermuda grass surface will require the right combination of skill and luck as you navigate the course.

“Our vision was to create something unique and enjoyable, and our guests are as pleased as we are with ‘The Greatest Green Ever Played!’,” said Bruce Gerlander, PGA, General Manager, Walt Disney World® Golf operated by Arnold Palmer Golf Management.

“The Greatest Green Ever Played!” pays homage to the biographical sports film, “The Greatest Game Ever Played,” released by Walt Disney Pictures, based on the early life of amateur golfer Francis Ouimet and his surprise victory at the 1913 U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, MA. Directed by Bill Paxton, this film starred Shia LaBeouf as the caddie-turnedchampion.

The family-friendly course at Walt Disney World® is open to all golfers who bring their own putters and balls, and you do not need a reservation to putt! It’s located just outside the back the pro shop and adjacent to the first hole of Disney’s Magnolia Golf

Course. Scorecards and pencils are conveniently available to track your score, and engage in some spirited competition.

The hole locations are changed almost weekly to provide for ongoing challenges, while the lengths of the holes and their level of difficulty are varies daily by adjusting the starting positions.

Creation of ‘The Greatest Green Ever Played’ is just one recent example of how Walt Disney World® Golf operated by Arnold Palmer Golf Management has made it a priority to continually upgrade and enhance the facilities available to all golfers at what has come to be known as “The Happiest Place on TURF!”

The four Walt Disney ® World Resort golf courses operated by APGM are:

• Disney’s Palm Golf Course

Picturesque natural beauty featuring shimmering lakes, majestic palm trees and tropical sands make Disney’s Palm Golf Course a pleasure to play and a challenge to conquer. Tee options vary between 5,213 yards (red tees) and 6,870 yards (blue tees). The par-4 18th hole – which features a

well-protected, elevated green – was always one of the most difficult on the PGA TOUR.

• Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course

Designed as a classic Tour style layout by Joe Lee, Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course is the longest of the Walt Disney World® Resort courses, playing at 7,560 yards from the Classic tees during tournaments, 7,141 yards from green tees and 6,684 from the white tees for daily play. The course, which features magnolia trees along the fairways and elevated tees, is undergoing its most extensive redesign ever prior to reopening to the public in 2023. Holes 14 through 17 are being reconfigured and all 18 greens are being substantially enhanced.

• Disney’s Lake Buena Vista Golf Course

Designed in 1972 by Joe Lee, this course near Disney Springs winds through several of the resort properties, including Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa and Disney’s Old Key West Resort. The course, which plays between 5,177 and 6,745 yards, includes a par-3 seventh hole with an island green and a Mickey Mouse-inspired bunker that was added to the rear of the ninth green in 2018.

• Disney’s Oak Trail Golf Course

A nine-hole walking course, Disney’s Oak Trail Golf Course is well-suited for families and casual golfers. This course, originally only six holes and known as “The Wee Course”, was expanded in the 1990s by Ron Garl who designed the fifth, sixth and seventh holes to feature water hazards around a canal and pond. The par-36 layout can be played from junior tees (1,713 yards) or close to 3,000 yards (including a 517-yard par-5) from the white tees.

High Pointe Golf Club makes a point for women in turf

The

Williamsburg, Mich. golf club’s team environment thrives with 30% women on staff

The turf industry is hardly balanced when it comes to its gender makeup. One recent industry study put the estimate of women on grounds crew staff as low as 3%. But at High Pointe Golf Club — a recently restored private club in Williamsburg, Mich. — a third of the staff is female. Eight of the 22 staff members are women.

Golf course superintendent Chris Danbrook says the staff’s gender makeup came to be pretty much by chance, and he’s glad it did.

“The women work harder than guys. It’s incredible,” says Danbrook, a seven-year GCSAA member. “We have some really

good guys, but you get some high school kids that have excuses. The women don’t come with excuses. They come to work happy and ready to go.”

Danbrook says there are other differences that he appreciates in his female team members.

“Their attention to detail is amazing. And they don’t seem to forget what you tell them. They ask more questions, too, than the typical male employee — which I think is great, because they want to get it done right. They’re just detailed hard workers,” he says.

He says he thinks the women on staff have positively

affected the men, too.

“The break rooms in the mornings for meetings … it’s just more alive,” Danbrook says. “It’s not just a bunch of dudes sitting around complaining. The guys have actually cleaned themselves up, their language and stuff like that. They know that they can’t be a typical guy on a guy workforce now that we have eight females working with us.”

After closing as a daily fee course amid the economic downturn of 2008, what was left of High Pointe Golf Club was purchased by an investor. For the past two years, the team led by Danbrook and

Left to right: Jada Ryckman, Kara Crain and Bridget King behind the scenes at High Pointe Golf Club. Photo courtesy of Bridget King

Dan Lucas, the club’s director of agronomy, has grown at High Pointe, working with the course’s original designer Tom Doak. After restoring six of the original holes and building 12 new ones, the private course opened for play in 2024 and has about 150 members so far.

That makes High Pointe GC a rare opportunity for the team members to learn new skills, one that assistant-in-training Bridget King has relished.

“Chris and Dan have given women on the staff opportunities for more responsibility and have given us jobs that we’ve never done before so that we can learn and move up,” King, who is studying turfgrass science at Penn State, says. “They know that I want to become a superintendent, so they’re doing anything they can to build me up and gain that knowledge that I need to become an assistant and a superintendent someday,”

Another assistant-in-training on the team, Jada Ryckman, also plans to become a superintendent

and agrees with King.

“At previous courses, I’ve been vocal that I wanted to learn, and they were like, ‘No, we’re not doing that — you’re going to keep doing what you’re qualified to do,’” Ryckman says. “It’s the stereotypical, ‘You’re a girl, this is heavy machinery, you can’t do this.’ Or, ‘Oh, this is too complicated.’

“At High Pointe, everybody is just eager to teach us anything we might not know. When I started there, I learned three new things just within the first two months. They ask if we’ve done this or that before, and if it’s ‘no,’ then it’s, ‘Well you’re going to learn today,’” she says.

Ryckman says she thinks the source of the difference is simple.

“I think it comes down to there’s more respect, genuinely. I can just feel it, the way they speak to me or are willing to help me learn, as well as all the other women we work with,” Ryckman says. “Chris is always available, and he’s super easy to talk to. You never have to

ask for a one-on-one to talk about something. Everybody is very approachable and eager to help.”

She says she’s felt uncomfortable at other courses she’s worked at, but not at High Pointe.

“I’ve never felt uncomfortable (at High Pointe). I absolutely love every single one of my co-workers. They go out of their way to make it a great environment and a great place to be,” Ryckman says.

For his part, Danbrook says he would recommend other superintendents be proactive about hiring women.

“If there’s someone out there that you’ve maybe been on the fence about, just do it. It’s one of the best things that’s happened to (our team). It just changes the dynamic of the team for the better,” Danbrook says.

“I would suggest in your Indeed ad or wherever you’re advertising, just say, ‘Hiring males and females.’ I think some people might be interested in the job, but they’re scared to apply.”

Audubon International Awarded $25,000 FairWays Foundation Grant for Monarchs In The Rough Program

Audubon International – the environmentally focused nonprofit organization offering members numerous certifications and conservation initiatives to protect the areas where we all live, work, and play – has received a $25,000 grant from The FairWays Foundation to help sustain and grow its popular Monarchs In The Rough program, in which golf courses establish milkweed habitat where the endangered butterflies can lay eggs during their seasonal migration periods. Grant funds will be used to provide regionally appropriate

milkweed seeds and program signs to participating courses.

“We are delighted and honored to receive a grant from FairWays Foundation,” said Audubon International CEO Christine Kane. “Monarchs In The Rough is one of our most popular and vital ongoing conservation initiatives, with participants within and outside the United States. This grant will go a long way in helping golf courses do their part to bolster Monarch populations along their Western Hemisphere migration corridors.” For more information on Monarchs in the Rough and how to join, visit www.monarchsintherough.org

A stand-alone 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established by The Aquatrols Company in 2019, The FairWays Foundation is dedicated to advancing conservation and environmental stewardship worldwide.
