Thanks, Winner, TikTok

More than 25 years ago, we started producing a golf and turf-related publication. An essential part of our publishing vision was recognizing the PEOPLE who worked, played, and lived for the turf grass experience. Thanks to the GCSAA, the tenth of September is International “Thank a Golf Course Superintendent Day” of course we celebrated the day of, but every individual in the turf industry deserves a daily dose of gratitude!

This included professional and amateur turf-sports enthusiasts, and workers who made it their mission to maintain turf grass, and the employees of companies who provide the equipment for this maintenance. In total, it amounts to thousands and thousands of people who share the passion of working, playing, and living for turf grass. There is a wonderful symbiotic respect between those who enjoy turf grass sports and those who maintain the same turf grass daily.

Golf Central Magazine, with over 200,000 readers, is an ongoing testament to our love for the people in this wonderful industry. From the start, we felt a strong connection to everyone we were writing about. We’ve developed unique features in every issue to acknowledge the many hands that have built up the game, and monthly giveaways to our subscribers for their loyal readership. Which brings me to congratulate our winner, Gary Pagel! We know you’ll love the Central Florida Golf Cards provided by The Golf Insiders!

These connections turned into a desire to find a mechanism for recognizing the men and women in turf. So, in 2013, we created the trademarked brand “Turf Life.” Our Turf Life team began selling branded apparel to turf grass professionals and players who believed that Turf Life was an important cultural concept to be conveyed to others.

We’ve recently acquired a business advisor, Jim Para, who utilized the new cultural phenomenon happening today called “AI.” By only entering the term “Turf Life” into an AI Bot, it Instantly returned the following: “Turf Life refers to the culture and lifestyle associated with maintaining and enjoying turfgrass, typically found on lawns, golf courses, sports fields, and other green spaces. This lifestyle often includes activities such as lawn care, landscaping, gardening, and sports that take place on grass surfaces. People who embrace Turf Life are usually passionate about the aesthetics and health of their grass, often investing time and resources into keeping their turf in top condition.” So, there you go. Our team and the AI bot agree. It is all about recognizing and appreciating these Turf Life people!

Additionally, Turf Life embraces sports beyond golf, including football, baseball, soccer, rugby, lacrosse, field hockey, and many equestrian sports. Which will be displayed first on our new TikTok account, spearheaded by our own Ty Fulgum (TikTok Ty)! Be on the lookout for more information on this new push in future issues of Golf Central Magazine. And don’t forget to get out there and enjoy the Turf Life.

Guests can also indulge in unrivaled dining by celebrity chefs Marcus Samuelsson and Daniel Boulud, and more than 45 restaurants, bars and lounges, over 30 affluent etail outlets, a marine sanctuary, a private island, a stunning selection of tropical pools and a pristine white-sand beach overlooking brilliant turquoise water.

Baha Mar curates authentic, unforgettable experiences for travelers from romantic getaways and family vacations, to large conventions and intimate celebrations.

Baha Mar’s Royal Blue Golf Course is ranked #1 in The Bahamas by Golfweek’s Best 2022 list and Top 20 of top golf courses in Mexico, the Caribbean, the Atlantic islands and Central America. The award-winning course’s pros offer lessons, data analysis lessons, skill assessment, and playing lessons to resort guests and non-guests.

Two Courses in One

Golfers looking to hit the green can tee off on the Royal Blue Golf Course, which was designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus. The most acclaimed golf course in Nassau, Royal Blue, features 18-holes unfolding over a gorgeous, naturally evolving landscape. Uniquely designed as two courses

in one, the course begins with a front-nine featuring dramatic views of undulating fairways and rolling white-sand dunes, brackish ponds and glimpses of a turquoise Atlantic Ocean. Players are then transported to a back-nine that challenges them to navigate stunning limestone “moonscapes” and elevation changes through dense jungle and steep downhill terrain to get to the island green on the 16th hole, which precariously borders Lake Cunningham, making for a memorable island golf experience that is majestic to see and thrilling to play.

Freeform Teeing

Royal Blue also features a unique, single set of tees, course set up, ensuring a unique experience each time guests play. Each day the Royal Blue grounds crew places tee locations on the course according to the changing Nassau weather and playing conditions, to create a new and optimal golfing xperience for

guests. With freeform teeing areas rather than traditional tee pods, any one hole can change by as much as 100 yards each day. This also allows for guests to play multiple variations of the course throughout their stay, while maintaining a similar overall yardage.

“Better Than Your Own” x PING Golf Clubs

Golfers can also take advantage of Baha Mar’s world-class “Better Than Your Own” golf club rental program in partnership with PING and enjoy an epic round at Royal Blue with a set of carefully curated PING Golf Clubs. PING provides a variety of full bag options from its latest product lineup, including the company’s flgship g430 Drivers, Fairways Hybrids and Irons, and the popular iCrossover, made for long-iron performance through faster speed and further shots. Royal Blue’s “Better Than Your Own” club rental program further

creates the rare opportunity for players to test some of the world’s finest lubs in unmatched playing conditions – as opposed to on the range or in a simulator. Each set of PING rentals are carefully chosen by Royal Blue’s professionals with a player’s skill set and preferences in mind. From forgiveness and advanced workability to distance and dispersion, each set takes personalized performance and fun to the extreme.

18-hole reservations start at $220 per person, which includes green fee and shared golf cart with GPS.

Baha Mar is a breathtaking location with dynamic programming, activities, and guest offerings in one of the most beautiful places in the world – The Bahamas.

A Father and Son Journey to Playing College Golf

Fast-growing college golf camp company connects junior golfers / aspiring collegiate golfers with college coaches

It’s difficult to explain the thoughts that go through your head as a father when you see your son standing on the practice range, being coached by a man who has won 14 NCAA Championships.

It was an early and chilly Saturday morning at Mission Resort + Club in Howey in the Hills, FL, during the first dy of a College Golf Experience (CGX) Boys Exposure Camp. My son Brady and I were there to see how his skills stacked up against the other juniors and to go behind the scenes with college coaches. He was always a baseball player who dabbled in golf but started to take the game more seriously four years ago.

CGX has not been on the scene long, but the popularity and growth of its engaging camps now include Tournament Prep Camps, Prospect Camps, and Exposure Camps (CGX Top25 Camps, Ivy Golf Institute Camps, DIII Camps, and International Camps). The educational camp model, which is all led by college coaches, has spread rapidly nationwide, inspiring our family and Brady to check out one of their DIII Exposure Camps. And we were not disappointed.

The camps bring junior golfers, parents, and college coaches together to learn from each other,

gain exposure, and educate young men and women on the college golf landscape and the road to get there through transformational events. These events help players and parents understand the journey to finding their ideal fit and ogram. This includes learning about the unique recruiting pathway, Q&A sessions, simulated college golf practice and tournament rounds, and on-course management and strategy sessions.

By mid-morning, Brady, a 17-year-old high school junior, had already worked on bunker shots with Emory coach John Sjoberg and had moved to the full-swing portion of the skills sessions. That’s when Methodist College legend Steve Conley rolled up to Brady and started a conversation.

(Full disclosure: I have talked with Conley at least a dozen times in a previous life where my job was to write previews and recaps of the

Division III season. But we hadn’t been in touch in probably 15 years.)

Conley diffused any nervousness with Brady by being playful and telling jokes, as he’s prone to do. Brady had been battling a right miss off the tee, so he hit a couple drives to show the coach, who got to work to diagnose the problem. Within ve minutes Conley had Brady hitting beautiful draws unlike anything I had ever seen him hit. It was wonderful to see, knowing that Brady knew Conley was a big deal in college golf circles but was unaware of his unrivaled resume, which includes nine NCAA titles in a 10-year span in the 1990s and his 13th title coming just two years ago.

“This is my first xperience with the camp,” Conley said. “I really like it for a lot of reasons. You can interact here vs. a regular tournament, where typically you can’t speak to a kid. You get to

see their skill level, they get some idea about how you coach and teach, you can share philosophies, work on course management and you still get to see them play in a competitive environment.”

The first afternoonwas spent with coaches rotating holes to make sure that they got a look at each camp participant for at least a couple holes. The star-studded coaching lineup on the men’s side included Conley, Sjoberg, 2023 NCAA champion coach Dan Rodgers from Carnegie Mellon, 2019 and 2021 NCAA champion coach Jim Ott from Illinois Wesleyan, Christopher Newport’s Jamie Coleman, Wittenberg’s David Wetterich and University of Redlands’ Jamie Zantua. Each coach was informative and helpful, while keeping the round as light as they could.

Brady worked through a situation with Conley where he, of course, wanted to go for the green in two on a par 5, his ball sitting just into the light rough 230 yards away from a back pin. Conley let Brady pull the trigger but didn’t question his decision or club selection. Brady thinned it, left the ball way short, findingwater.

Conley calmly asked Brady which club he used. And here is the conversation:

Brady: 4-iron

Conley: How far do you hit that?

Brady: 225 yards

Conley: How far was it to carry the water?

Brady: 180 yards

Conley: Which club would you use that would easily carry 180 yards?

Brady: 6-iron

Nothing else needed to be said.

“It was a great weekend, and the coaches were so helpful,” Brady said. “I left there knowing what I need to work on to get better, starting with course management.”

Sunday included a competitive 18-hole round where coaches again acted like they would during a regular round for their own squad during a tournament. They were involved, helping players through club selection, judging wind directions and providing overall

strategy. This time though, there were nervy moments because a score was being recorded.

“I would pass on a player that might be better statistically than someone that I know would fit better that has potential,” Carnegie Mellon’s Rodgers said. “That kid may pull others up, may be a great teammate or a great encourager. That’s where I’ve found that these camps are great for that.”

“Generally, I’m trying to see if I can be in the van with them for four years,” Rodgers continued. “That’s a big deal. I think we don’t talk about that enough. I plan to be there a long time. So this new person is coming in to be part of

do not want to see in an email. What sort of events do they expect you to play? What type of grades do you need? When is a good time for a campus visit? When do they typically finalize their team rosters for the next year? The pros and cons of social media. No questions were off limits. In fact, one coach specificaly gave Brady incredible advice on how to communicate with the coach of a school that he had been wanting to contact.

Illinois Wesleyan’s Ott, when explaining the benefits of laying Division III golf, had one of the best lines of the night. He’s passionate about his school, he’s

our extended golf family. How do they fitwith us? It’s not us fitting with them. That’s a bad move.”

The most eye-opening portion of the weekend, however, came Saturday after dinner. Parents were on their own when the campers had dinner with the coaches but afterward there was a question-and-answer period where everyone could attend. Most were tired from a long day with an early start, but each coach was so helpful and answered question after question with great depth and sincerity. It was refreshing.

College athletics is such a cutthroat business, but the coaches who have won each of the last ve NCAA Championships, among the others, had no problem answering openly and honestly. What do they look for in an email? What they

passionate about his team and he’s passionate about students finding a place to play that fits them He knows Division I is the top dog and he’s well aware of the aura that surrounds playing for one of those schools. His pitch however: why go to a Division I program and struggle to get playing time if you can go to a top Division III program, play more often, and participate in “meaningful golf.”

With those two words, a lightbulb came on in Conley’s head. He’s been coaching his Monarchs since 1987 and hadn’t heard this explained quite that way.

“Meaningful golf,” he said. “I’m writing that one down.”

IMAGINE…

A Tropical Caribbean Island… sitting off the Southeast coast of Florida, with a culture and heritage more diverse than anywhere else on earth… that the people refer to themselves as “Boricua.” Boricua would be considered a spirit, a flvor, and a rhythm that you truly can find in one place on earth – Puerto Rico. Boricua (bȯ-ree-kwa) -- A person from Puerto Rico by birth or descent.

The overall culture of Puerto Rico is a colorful tapestry of old and new. Mixing Indigenous Taínos, Spanish, and African traditions and you’ll find xpressions of that culture mix, throughout the entire island. Art museums… vibrant

murals… or join in a Bomba dance lessons, or even lively festivals that fi l the streets. Look, listen, or join right in. You can truly immerse yourself in the welcoming and unique culture of Puerto Rico.

CONSIDER… Being so close to cultural phenomenon that when you delve deeper into what it means to ‘Live Boricua’ as our vibrant culture invites you in. And the best part… NO PASSPORT NEEDED. Puerto Rico is a Territory of the United States, so catching a flight to this topical paradise is as simple as showing your driver’s license, state ID, and your ticket at the gate… and you are on your way.

BUT DON’T FORGET TO BRING YOUR CLUBS… to Puerto Rico. Our golf clubs hate it when we leave them at home… and they know we have gone off to an island for the weekend.

There are 18 golf courses located throughout Puerto Rico. 11 of those courses are in or near the

San Juan region on the North “Metro” region of the island. 10 of those courses are part of an extended amenities package at some very exclusive resorts.

The courses are diverse yet complementary, offering a variety of choices depending on your preferences.

Trophy courses? Check.

Non-resort courses that illuminate municipality’s goal to promote golf outside San Juan? Check.

Courses where college and professional players compete? Check.

With different terrain types… open… tight… (LOL) very tight… ocean views… mountain views… price points, or more -- there are options for everyone playing golf.

WHO IS THE MOST POPULAR PUERTO RICO GOLFER EVER…?

I know you’ve got this answer… Juan Antonio Rodriguez… or as his fans called him… “Chi-Chi.”

Castillo San Felipe del Morro (also known as “El Morro”) – Courtesy of Discover Puerto Rico
Boricua is alive and well in Puerto Rico –Courtesy of Discover Puerto Rico
Boricua is alive and well in Puerto Rico –Courtesy of Discover Puerto Rico

Chi-Chi was one of the “great showmen” in sports history. His career spanned four decades.

Chi-Chi won 22 Senior PGA Tour events, 8 regular PGA Tour events, and during his career earned over $7 million.

Juan Antonio “Chi-Chi” Rodriguez. The Puerto Rican golf legend. October 23, 1935 - August 8, 2024. He is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Before the game entered the mainstream and attracted the corporate dollar the entertainers played a big part in getting fans through the gates and into the game. Chi-Chi will be remembered as golf’s great entertainer.

Chi-Chi Rodriguez won his first PGA Tour event, The Denver Open in 1963. After that tournament, Chi-Chi explained that it was his “biggest thrill in golf.” Now keep in mind with PGA Purses today passing the $20 Million mark… the Denver Open posted a whopping… $35,000 purse for the players.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR OUR NEXT VISIT…

Our next visit to Puerto Rico will

be more to the adventurous side of life. The El Yunque is the only tropical Rainforest in the US Forest Service. Don’t forget this is still a US Territory… so, yes… the US Forest Service. I have seen pictures of a beautiful waterfall to visit via a walking trail inside the Rainforest.

I have heard from reliable sources… that the walk is one mile from the parking area and downhill . . . which means a one mile walk back uphill (think about that before your adventure). We are all-in for this adventure.

Puerto Rico has the brightest Bioluminescent Bay in the world. There are only ve Bioluminescent Bays in the world and three of them are in Puerto Rico.

GETTING TO PUERTO RICO…

Puerto Rico has 3 commercial airports, with Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) being the largest and most accessible. More than 20 commercial airlines y in and out of the city every day.

What about a Cruise line? Check your itinerary. Cruise ships dock in port minutes away

from the Old San Juan Region, where you are just steps away from this unique culture, and incredible shopping experiences.

SO WHY WAIT…

Discover Puerto Rico

If you haven’t been… it is a perfect time to start planning. And if it a return trip… well…, what have you been waiting for… a special invitation? Okay… You’ve got it… because there is “No Passport needed.”

MANIFEST WAS FOUNDED ON THE PRINCIPLE THAT a great vision can only be achieved through unity. Individual talents and abilities are integral to our success, but the sum is always greater than the individual parts.

This founding principle revealed itself naturally when establishing our team, comprised of David Cohen, Scott Kennelly, Trey Mills and Tom Johnson. The individual journeys of these four gentlemen led them together to form what is now Manifest.

Manifest celebrates the best of what American craftsmanship has to offer, from the American-made distillation equipment to the grains sourced from a network of co-ops throughout the North America. Our distillation is influenced by training from famed brew school the Siebel Institute, researching and shadowing master distillers throughout Kentucky and elsewhere along with a resilient desire to never stop learning, growing and chasing our best selves.

The “All in the Family” Golf Destination

One of the largest familyowned golf resorts in the country has been building a legacy for more than 60 years

A wildly popular Southwestern Michigan golf destination came about because of one man’s vision. A superintendent at nearby Gull Lake Country Club in Richland, Michigan, for 25 years, Darl Scott decided to tap into his entrepreneurial spirit in the early 1960s. He and his wife, who already owned and operated a nearby motel, set out to build the Gull Lake View West golf course in 1962 on adjacent land. Little did the couple know that the small motel and golf course business

would lead the couple to become pioneers in destination golf.

Today, this stay-and-play lake country golf destination is one of the largest family-owned golf resorts in the country. One that offers an affordable value proposition not commonly found with larger multi-course golf resorts. Gull Lake View’s six championship courses offer a special experience for golfers, all

while not breaking the bank. Imagine, for the price of one round at Pebble Beach or Bandon Dunes, golfers could experience a three-day, twonight golf package and play up to three or four rounds of golf.

The original Gull Lake View West is depicted by fields ravines, hills, woods, ponds, and domed greens. In the early 1970s, the couple sold the motel and built Gull Lake View East – which features hilly scenic terrain, lots of unique water hazards, and demands good shot placement. Alongside the East course, Darl built villa-style condos for golf groups to stay in, which was a new experience at the time.

During the late 1980s and 1990s golf course boom, the Scotts’ son Charlie, who had built golf courses for Wadsworth Construction for seven years before coming home to build the East course, designed and built Stonehedge South nearby in 1988. The golf course is set on dramatic, rolling wooded countryside reminiscent of the Carolinas. Then, in 1995, Charlie and his son Jon built Stonehedge North, which showcases dramatic elevation changes and plays roughly ve shots easier than the South. At the same time, the family bought and refurbished nearby Bedford Valley Country Club, a local course that had hosted multiple Michigan

Stoatin Brae Bunker Halfway House

Opens but fell into disrepair.

“Darl (who passed away in 1999) liked to buy land, and in that spirit, Jon and I looked at the land next to the South course, and it had an Irish-Scottish feel to it with a lot of movement,” recalls Bill Johnson, CEO of Gull Lake View who was the company’s vice president back then. “And that’s how Stoatin Brae came about, which opened in 2017. We were playing at Pacific Dunes at Bandon Dunes and talked about getting in touch with architect Tom Doak. Within a couple of days, he was here to look at the plans with us.”

Due to a project conflict Doak handed the Stoatin Brae job to his Renaissance Golf A-Team of designers Eric Iverson, Brian Schneider, Don Placek, and Brian Slawnik. They were responsible for the layout and critical shaping, bringing the Scottish influences alve. They created a minimalist classic links style with architectural elements from golf’s golden design era of the 1920s and 1930s to create a stunning and memorable golf experience.

Stoatin Brae is only the second course of the six that is not designed by the talented family with landscape architecture backgrounds. And now, the course is ranked in the state’s top 5. Unlike anything else in Michigan, it’s located on one of the highest points in Kalamazoo County and commands sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It’s a special course with a dramatic design that inspires golfers to play their best.

“Most of our guests will spend a whole day at Stonehedge during one of their days visiting, playing the North and South,” says Johnson. “They like to play the East and West together, as well. And then Stoatin Brae, which we’ve done a lot of work on to make it more playable. It’s mature now and it’s beautiful. The views are great, and it’s totally different than any of the other golf courses. And Bedford Valley gives you that old country club feel. And it’s a big golf course that we can stretch to way over 7,000 yards if need be. These six courses have withstood the test of time. They’re just good-quality golf courses. And everybody knows when they come here, they’re gonna get great conditions.”

“We pride ourselves on country club conditions,” continues Johnson. “We’re all about golf, and we have the amenities, restaurants, snack bars, and condos that people love. We’re located right in the middle of Detroit and Chicago, an easy drive from both or from up north and Wisconsin. It’s really grown in popularity.”

For people in the Detroit-toChicago corridor, it’s a much shorter drive than going to Northern Michigan, and the golf quality is equally good. What’s really special about all six courses is that they’re playable for all skill levels. Golf has become more about fun, relaxation, and hanging out with friends.

That’s what Gull Lake View emanates. You don’t have to be a great player to enjoy your stay.

As popular as Gull Lake View has become—particularly since the pandemic—ownership is reinvesting roughly $2 million per year into improving the course conditions, irrigation, accommodations, and infrastructure in an effort to keep everything top-notch. They really care about the overall experience. Golfers will likely see that spill over into more rooms available in the near future, as well.

“We’re definitey at lodging capacity a lot,” says Johnson. “In fact, we work with a lot of host hotels, the biggest one being the Radisson in Kalamazoo, that we fil up for weekends because we’re just full. So, by having the six courses, we can spread guests around. As for more golf courses, you never know. I wouldn’t rule that out. We’re always looking at land and continuing Darl Scott’s spirit,” says Johnson. Going on the fourth generation of ownership since the early 1960s, this simple yet charming golf resort is a fun and rewarding experience for everyday golfers. It is the ultimate destination where buddies can have the same experience and camaraderie without breaking the bank or traveling great distances to highend or oceanfront destinations that often receive all the attention.

The Rebirth of Stoneybrook West

Rocky Hodge didn’t start playing golf until he was 19 years old. He never had a lesson. He didn’t spend much time on a driving range. It was a late start.

Hodge, who is Canadian, grew up in a small town in Labrador City Newfoundland. Like most kids in Canada, he grew up playing hockey. Golf wasn’t a cool sport back then and the local golf course had a relatively short season, June 1st-Sept 30th.

College at Halifax Business Academy changed all that. Halifax is home to more than 400,000 people, multiple golf courses and a much better climate. His buddies would go play golf on the weekend and that’s when Hodge got hooked.

Today, Hodge is a scratch golfer and the man in charge at Stoneybrook West Golf Club which is celebrating its one-year, grand re-opening this month.

Over the past 30 years, Hodge became a successful entrepreneur and owner of multiple businesses. As he traveled and played golf in different parts of the world, his love and passion for the game grew. However, the thought of owning a golf course was

never quite on his radar.

“People kept telling me owning a golf course was not profitble,” said Hodge. “But I never did the numbers.”

After spending winter vacations in Florida, Hodge moved his family to Windemere permanently in 2015. He became a member of Stoneybrook West Golf Club, joined the men’s league (which he runs today) and befriended 40-50 golfers who lived in the adjacent community. Until December 2018, when after years of turmoil and mismanagement, the course abruptly shut down, much to the surprise and anguish of the homeowners.

to repay the city through a special assessment.

Hodge was invested in the golf course, emotionally, both as a businessman and as a player. He was determined to keep the course public and warned the community that if it was leased to a golf management company and potentially turned into a private club, the residents would be unable to afford to play golf, let alone have access to the amenities.

Originally developed by US Home, Stoneybrook West opened in 2000 – it is a 1200-home, master planned golf community with an 18-hole public golf course designed by Arthur Hills. Two years past the 2018 closure, the course was slowly turning into an eyesore for West Orange County. In March 2021, a deal was approved for the city of Winter Garden to purchase the golf course for $2 million, allowing the HOA to take it over, and giving the homeowners 20 years

He met with the residents in person and pitched his vision for the property which was to reinvent Stoneybrook West with an “old school,” grassroots, hands on, single owner/operator mentality.

“They needed to know what was really going on and to see my passion and commitment,” said Hodge. “That I was going to be an owner that cared, who was going to be seen on the property, as well as being part of the

community - that they would be included in that process and have that pride and feeling of ownership.”

In March 2022, The Stoneybrook West HOA, after considering a half dozen proposals, accepted Hodge’s bid to lease the golf course. Renovations to the golf course, the 10,000 sq. ft. clubhouse, pro shop and restaurant were completed last summer and Stoneybrook West reopened on September 1, 2023, after nearly ve years.

With his vast experience in the hospitality, restaurant and beverage industry, Hodge completely reimagined the club’s concept creating a casual, upscale look and feel. Hodge understood that Stoneybrook West had once been the cornerstone of the community and focused his attention to elevate the entire property, from the 18th hole to the 19th hole.

That began with renaming and reinventing the restaurant. SB Prime is a full-service bar and grill that offers specialty cocktails, popular handhelds and appetizers, and a mouth-watering brunch on Sundays. An outdoor bourbon and cigar lounge was added along with big screen TVs to encourage gathering off the course, watch parties, weddings, and other events.

“(Previously) it was more of a golf course restaurant, and now it’s a restaurant that just so happens to have a golf course,” said Hodge. “I wanted this to be a place that people wanted to come to because it’s a great restaurant with great food.”

The golf course restoration was the biggest piece of the project. With its dramatic rolling fairways touched by water on 14 holes, towering berms, and generous bunkering, the course is returning to its reputation as one of Orlando’s best.

One recent review noted, “Tees, fairways and greens are in good shape. Greens roll true and are in excellent condition. They have

put the money in the right place to get the course going again. Staff were excellent.”

Stoneybrook West offers a variety of affordable memberships including family, juniors, couples, singles, and residents. They also offer a corporate membership for two golfers with full access and the ability to have two guests play at any time. All are structured with no extra fees.

“If you want to play seven days a week,” said Hodge, “there are no cart fees or extra charges. When members are here, I want them to feel like they own the place.”

Hodge prides himself on being available 24/7 and inviting his customers to knock on his door with

comments and suggestions. It’s a family affair, with his wife, Carla, and son, Colton, playing a part in the day-to-day operations. He believes the enthusiasm for golf as a pastime is back and total rounds are growing, while his formula for success remains relatively simple:

“If I treat my customers, how I’d want to be treated, that’s enough to be successful.”

Billy Martin Brings His International Coaching Success to Florida

Billy Martin, a 30-year member of the PGA of America, is establishing Billy Martin Golf at the Orlando Golf Academy in Orlando, Florida. Billy’s storied career in the game began as a player and later as a club pro in Florida. While in Florida, Billy spent valuable time caddying for and learning from Mr. Jack Nicklaus before embarking on a successful career developing top juniors and adults throughout Japan, Korea, China and Hong Kong,

“What a journey this has been,” expressed Billy during a phone interview. “I have so many great experiences and developed lifelong friendships during my

time in Asia, but it is time to come back to the States. I am excited to get settled in Orlando and establish Billy Martin Golf here.”

Billy had the good fortune to learn his craft from Hall of Fame instructors Garner Dickenson, Jack Grout, Jim Flick, Mike Malaska, Martin Hall and others before heading off to Japan. At his first stop in Tokyo, Martin replaced Mike Malaska as the Director of Instruction at the Nicklaus Academy facility. Martin spent years as a Director of Instruction, Director of Education, and Academy Director at various locations for the acclaimed Jack Nicklaus Academies during 20+ years in Asia.

“I have continued to refine y craft, as they say, incorporating new information, new technologies, new equipment and new training methods, but it still comes down to ‘can you work yourself around the golf course and shoot a low number’. This is one of many takeaways from my time being on the bag for Mr. Nicklaus. You do not always have your A-Game, so you better learn how to adapt and make the swing you brought to the course that

day work for you. This is what forms much of the philosophy of the BMG Approach; learning how play the game and enjoy your time on the golf course.”

Martin continued, “Fundamentals remain the basis for building a solid, repeatable swing. That can never be understated regardless of age or ability. Accessing the amazing technologies that exist helps me identify both strengths and the player’s weaknesses that need to be addressed. Utilizing the proven drills I have prescribed during my career helps players cement their swing changes. Taking their game to the course and putting their swing and putting stroke under pressure is proof we are on our way to writing down low scores. That is Job Number One.”

For Billy to maintain his personal connection with his students in Asia is accomplished using Golf Live. Billy and his students can easily connect using the Golf Live App that includes real-time video capture and replay. “It is as effective as being side by side on the lesson tee. With both of us on our phones or tablets, I can remotely capture their swing, have the video replay on both of our devices, draw lines, advance the video back and forth, pull up previous swings for side-byside comparisons, even load in my own pre-recorded drills. The entire lesson is saved in the students’ locker for review at their convenience. This is a game changer for my students and my business. Just amazing.” Billy Martin is available for in person lessons at the Hawk’s Landing Golf Course located at the Orlando World Center Marriott Resort.

Bonjour Quebec –Fore Fall Days in Outaouais Canada

Gatineau Quebec – Despite the fact that the days are getting shorter, fall remains my favorite time of year. I love the crispness in the air, the crunch of leaves under my feet and the smell of logs on the fie. Autumn is the perfect time of year to don your sweater and comfortable shoes and get out there and explore.

Outaouais is located in the southwest corner of Quebec and stretches east from Ottawa to the foothills of the Laurentian

Mountains. Fall is the ideal time to explore this region since the autumn colours are spectacular. There are so many amenities to discover including fishing biking, hiking, canoeing and kayaking. However, if golf is more to your liking, there are 13 public golf courses in the region, but I only had a chance to play four of them.

Le Sorcier Golf Club – is only a 15-minute drive from Ottawa/ Gatineau. Built in 2004, it has been ranked in the top 10 public

golf clubs in Quebec and #3 most beautiful. There are plenty of elevations changes and is tucked into a maple syrup producing forest so the fall colours are bountiful. The forward tees avoid forced carries making it fair for all calibers of golfers. Green fees range from US$50 - $55 + taxes including mandatory cart. The nearby Hotel V and Hilton Lac-Leamy also offer Golf and Accommodation packages. Gatineau Golf and Country Club –is in Gatineau. It originally opened in 1929 but was renovated by Canadian Architect Graham Cooke in 2011. The layout weaves in and out of a housing development and is relatively flat so it is easy to walk. Green fees start at US$36 -$51 + taxes. Power Cart is $15

Heritage Golf & Country Club – is about halfway between Montreal and Ottawa. Opened in 1988, the Laurentian Mountains form a stunning backdrop. This 27hole property is well treed with tremendous elevation changes. The fairways are reasonably wide and there are not too many bunkers, so it is fun for all calibers of golfers. 18-hole green fees are US$28 to $31 + $15 for a power cart and taxes

Le Chateau Montebello Golf Club –is about a 50-minute drive but

Le Chateau Montebello Fireplace
Heritage Golf & Country Club

has consistently been ranked in the top 100 golf courses in Canada. This stately par 70 was designed in 1929 by Canada’s legendary architect Stanley Thompson. The narrow heavily treed fairways and dramatic elevation changes offer spectacular vistas of the fall colours. When you travel to Canada you must experience a Stanley Thompson design, and this is no exception. They are majestic masterpieces that still hold their own a century later. 2024 Fall Green fees are US$55 to $63 including cart + taxes. Make sure you stay at their impressive handhewed log lodge that is reportedly the largest in the world. Inside is a massive six-sided stone fieplace that is the focal point. This is the ideal retreat to escape to and enjoy Quebec nature at its finest In fact, Conde Naste has rated the Fairmont Le Chateau Montello as 15th in their Top 20 Resorts in Canada. If you have visited Canada, then you already know. But if you have never traveled across the northern border before, fall is the ideal time to visit. Tourism is down and the US$ is hovering around CA$1.35 so that are great value to be had.

Quebec accounts for 65% of the world’s production of maple syrup so make sure you take home some for you and your friends. Makes an amazing Canadiana gift.

An Unexpected Gem in the Inland Northwest Spokane, Wash. and Northern Idaho are ideal for unique, inspiring golf getaways

Having never played golf in the Inland Northwest I didn’t know what to expect when beginning a trip there in July. And frankly, I was skeptical that the effort required to y across the country would be worthwhile when there are many golf resorts closer to my home in the Southeast. But I was both surprised and astounded by the quality of the golf and the area’s natural beauty.

To reach the area if not driving, y into Spokane International Airport (GEG), located near the border of Washington and Idaho. After a scenic 50-minute drive to Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel, our home for the trip, check into one of the 300 well-appointed rooms plus 24 suites. You’ll feel pampered thanks to the staff’s attention to detail and the resort’s “Welcome Home” philosophy.

The amenity-rich resort includes

the largest spa in the Inland Northwest (15,000 square feet), live entertainment, shops, restaurants, an 18-hole golf course, and more.

Surrounded by Coeur d’Alene National Forest, the property’s Circling Raven Golf Club, is rated a top 20 casino course in the nation, the No. 1 public course in Idaho, and one of the top resort courses in America.

The course meanders through 620 acres – ve times more acres than the average course worldwide, with the course using less than

one-third of that total. The rest is comprised of glorious, heaving Palouse Region terrain, habitat for moose, eagles, and other wildlife.

As the Creator intended, the Coeur d’Alene people would say. Owned and operated by the Tribe, the course is a testament to their reverence for their ancestral homelands.

Designer Gene Bates authored a design that is filed with ingenious holes. Using what nature provided, Bates, who designed Southwood in Tallahassee with Fred Couples, carved an 18-hole masterpiece that many consider his finest work. He was selected by the Tribe because his vision for the property aligned with their mission; to pay homage to tribal ancestors and honor the land while creating a world-class championship course.

“The land became the course,” said Bates. Mother Nature may steal the show, but Circling Raven – named for a seminal

medicine man-prophet of the Tribe – will steal your heart.

Circling Raven also has an exceptional golf shop that won national honors from the PGA of America in the Resorts Category.

The property’s 60,000 square foot casino floor has 1,200 gaming machines, bars, a food court, and restaurants including the fantastic Chinook Steak, Seafood and Pasta Restaurant.

As wonderful as the resort is singularly – including cultural activities like canoeing area waterways as the Tribe has for time immemorial, Native American themed paint-and-sip sessions, cultural dinners with dance and drum and authentic food dishes, and more – it’s even better used as a golf trip base camp, pairing it with other nearby courses. These include seven operated by Spokane County and Spokane City, where the international airport is located.

Indicative of the area’s great courses is the marvelous Spokane County layout known as Latah Creek. Routed with its namesake creek winding through the course, it unfurls through terraced green terrain and showcases wellbunkered greens, wide fairways, and superb putting surfaces.

Public golf in the Spokane area is historic and considered top-notch by national course-rating pundits. Indian Canyon debuted in 1935 and was designed by E. Chandler Egan, who contributed significanly to Pebble Beach’s design. It swoops through walls of forested canyon and is bisected by courageous fairway contours. There are exciting downhill shots, but the often pitched, elevated greens make the 6,255-yard course play longer.

Spokane County courses include Latah Creek, MeadowWood, and Liberty Lake. The Spokane City courses are Esmerelda,

Downriver, Indian Canyon, and the Creek at Qualchan.

In hindsight, our trip to the Inland Northwest was both memorable and extremely enjoyable. Great golf courses. Low humidity. Stellar vistas. Welcoming hospitality. What more could a traveling player want?

Savannah: Awesome DuringAutumn

On your next trip to Georgia to play golf along the Georgia Golf Trail, set aside some downtime for a day or two or three in the city which is actually Georgia’s first state capital and umber-one tourist destination: Savannah.

“The appeal of Savannah as a vacation destination is what keeps people coming back to this city year after year,” says Doug Hollandsworth, founder, Georgia Golf Trail. Every day, Savannah’s pedestrianfriendly layout enhances the allure of the city and its many ‘attractions’ -- Southern cuisine restaurants, riverboat cruises along the Savannah River, architectural tours, spectacular art galleries, Civil War re-enactments, and the city’s number one attraction: the Savannah Historic Theatre, which was established in 1818.

Of course, any visit to Savannah would be incomplete without a stroll along River Street or a visit to the Historic District of Savannah,

which is the home of the City Market. Both River Street and the City Market are brimming with antique shops, classy boutiques, fabulous restaurants, one-of-akind nightspots, and locally owned and operated inns, hotels, and B & B’s. The City Market is located

in a four-block area downtown and is in the heart of Savannah’s entertainment district. Every night, you should be able to find a lve, local band producing a toe-tappin’ sound for visitors and locals, alike. An ideal place to spend the night in Savannah is the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa. If you stay at the Westin, you’ll also receive complimentary water ferry service to River Street, where you’ll find some of Savannah’s best restaurants, all with a view of the Savannah River. The fall in Savannah is one of the most anticipated times of the year and with it marks the return of a few of the city’s most adored celebrations. Family and friends gather on the river during Plant Riverside District’s Oktoberfest, where live music and authentic German cuisine are delightfully celebrated. Or, come to Savannah to indulge in a season of music with the Savannah Jazz Festival and the Savannah Philharmonic. Or, make plans to wear your bandana and eyepatch during the Tybee Island Pirate Festival (October 10-13). It’s four days of food, live music, entertainment, and possibly a peg leg or two! And, ghost tours are very popular in Savannah, especially as Halloween approaches. Three of the more popular ghost tours are the Spooky Savannah Haunted Pub Crawl, Savannah’s Ghost City “Dead of Night” Walking Night Tour and the Savannah Ghost Trolley Tour With Dinner at the Pirate’s House. If you want some beach time while

in Savannah, nearby Tybee Island is the place to go in order to enjoy the sand and the surf. Tybee Island, officialy known as Savannah’s Beach, has ve miles of public beach along the Atlantic Ocean. T-shirts, shorts, and flip flops e considered the ‘official lothing’ while on Tybee Island. If you spend the night on Tybee Island and want to see a brilliant sunrise, book a room at Hotel Tybee (www.hoteltybee.com).

Also, it’s no surprise that in the 2023 Georgia Golf and Travel Awards, Savannah was selected as the Best City To Visit in Georgia for the sixth straight year (from 2018 – 2023). Savannah’s antique shops, classy boutiques, fabulous restaurants, one-of-a-kind nightspots, locally owned/operated inns/hotels/B & B’s, ghost tours, and the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa await your arrival.

With market indicators reflectin strong growth in the game over the last four years the demand for better golf facilities has followed suit. Sanford Ferris Golf Design (SFGD) is assisting more than a dozen courses across the state of Florida with their improvements, including four in the construction phase this summer. SFGD is based in Jupiter, FL and has been providing comprehensive golf course design, landscape design, and project management services for new courses, renovations, and restorations since 1986.

The East course at Eastpointe Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens is a South Florida hidden gem. The course is undergoing an extensive restoration of the 1974 George Fazio layout. SFGD is overseeing the construction of the greens, tees, bunkers,

fairways, new bulkheads, cart paths, drainage, irrigation and expanded practice facilities. South Florida Golf Renovations is the contractor on the project and Fox Irrigation is installing the sprinkler system.

Ibis Country Club wanted to add color and enhance aesthetics throughout the Legends course. SFGD was commissioned to design plantings with an array of colors and textures. This included a number of new planting beds around the Legends course and working with Nicklaus Design on the Heritage course renovation, which includes the transplanting of 28 large Live Oaks and 270 Sabal palms.

Following the 2023 renovation of the back 9 at Palmetto-Pine Country Club in Cape Coral , Fl. SFGD is now redesigning the front 9 holes. The redesign will add length and dramatically improve all tees , greens , bunkers and fairways. The course will reopen to member play in November. Landirr is the golf course and irrigation contractor.

SFGD started working with The Great Outdoors in Titusville, Fl. back in 2021 on a long range improvement plan. This summer all green and tee complexes are being renovated, including new irrigation, drainage, and cart paths. Six holes of their 18 holes are being completely rebuilt. The renovation will pay homage to golden era classics. South Florida Golf Renovations is the contractor on the project and Winterberry Irrigation is installing the sprinkler system. For

Susie Keane– FSGA runs a first-class organization

The limelight is familiar territory for Susie Keane, who has been in its glow for years. Before her golf career, Keane was a professional tennis player by the age of 16. As a junior, she clinched numerous titles, including ve National singles championships and four National doubles championships, cementing her status as the world’s top junior in 1980. Her notable Grand Slam achievement was reaching the fourth round at the 1984 US Open. Following her retirement from the game of tennis, a new passion would emerge. Upon moving back to Michigan, she joined a golf club to introduce her children to the sport. However, with her kids in school and some extra time on her hands, Keane, like many former athletes, turned to a new hobby. She received a set of golf clubs for her 40th birthday, and as she puts it, the rest was “a perfect storm”. Keane went on, “I just kind of started. At that time, I was just thinking it was something I was doing very socially with the kids and as my dad always said ‘if you’re going to do something, do it well’, so I just kind of, you know, in golf, you get addicted, so I started playing a lot and it just kind of snowballed from there.”

Despite her growing enthusiasm for the game, Keane didn’t initially envision herself competing at a high level. However, as time passed and her children grew older, she began to set her focus on senior competitions. Life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 50, but demonstrating her characteristic resilience, Keane would go on to enter a US Senior Women’s Amateur Qualifie. Although she didn’t qualify this time around, it was clear she had caught the golf bug for good.

Despite her successes, Keane still felt out of place. She took this as an opportunity to play some more tournaments and get to know the girls that were competing at her level. Keane stated “It’s still-- it’s very much out of my comfort zone. But it’s a challenge, I mean, golf is hard.” She went on to say “Everyone always asks me, “ Which is harder, golf or tennis?” Keane didn’t hesitate to declare that golf takes the prize for being the tougher sport. “It’s so unforgiving,” she noted.

The humble nature of Keane showed through when she remarked how golf still to this day feels out of her comfort zone. She said, “It’s still relatively new to me and I would feel more comfortable walking on a tennis court right now, even after not playing for probably ve years, but I’m still going to feel more comfortable doing that than I would be walking on a golf course.”

Despite her discomfort, Keane has accomplished several impressive feats. Keane initially qualified for the US Senior Women’s Amateur in 2018 with a score of 76. She achieved this milestone again in 2019 and 2022, and also took part in the US Senior Women’s Open Championship in 2022. Her latest USGA appearance was earlier this month at the 6th U.S. Senior Women’s Open, marking her third overall participation.

However, as many golfers know,

these successes haven’t come without tribulations. Keane’s achievements in tennis were the result of extensive practice, but she finds that her peparation techniques don’t always translate well to golf. She explained, “Sometimes I think it works against me,” she went on “Because I think in golf sometimes you need to step away because the golf swing is such a feeling kind of thing and it’s almost like the harder you work at it, the worse it gets.”

Despite the difference in the two sports, she reiterated “We’re lucky to be doing this, and you kind of get to enjoy the process, and you do the best you can, and accept the results, and, you know, all of that, I think I have a pretty healthy attitude.”

When asked if the FSGA has played a part in helping her golf game and assisting her in getting to the next level, Keane expressed, “Absolutely. I mean, I cannot believe all the opportunities… When I first mved to Florida, I competed in a couple of the One Day events, and it just kind of snowballed into what I’m doing now. But it’s so many opportunities, it’s amazing, and, I mean the FSGA runs a first-lass organization.”

Keane took the time to conduct this interview during a trip to Michigan to celebrate her mother’s 90th birthday. She has a quick turnaround back to Florida to get a few days of practice before the US Senior Women’s Amateur qualifie. But family has always taken precedence, something that Keane is adamant about. She stated “ I don’t have grandkids yet. So it’s like I’m in this kind of little bubble right now where I do have some time that I can focus some extra time on it.”

With the aim of playing a significant ole in her grandchildren’s lives in the future, Keane is savoring her golf game and everything it entails while she can. Nevertheless, she has made a remarkable impact on both tennis

and golf, inspiring countless people around her. It’s clear that Keane, in turn, draws inspiration from those around her, “I love the girls. I have so much respect for all the girls out there doing it. I mean, they inspire me, like at this age. I just look around and people that are even in their 70s that are competing at such a high level. I mean, I think it’s inspiring for me just to be doing something active and challenging and out of my comfort zone at this stage of my life. Like that– I think that’s what I love about it the most.”

Keane offered advice for athletes contemplating a switch to a different sport and those new to golf looking to get started. “First of all, it’s never too late. You can do anything you put your mind to. I mean, absolutely anything. I’ve found that there’s a level for everyone to compete at or to excel at, or to just compete with yourself.” In her closing remarks, Keane expressed, “In anything you do, do better today than you did yesterday.”

Noah & David Kent, PGA: A Father's Pride and a Son's Triumph

Ahead of the 2024 Amateur Championship in Ballyliffen, Ireland, Noah Kent wrote a special Father's Day note to his Dad, David Kent, PGA General Manager at The Golf Club at Crown Colony.

"Thank you for everything you have done for me the past 19 years. You're the best Dad ever and the best role model," Noah wrote. "Hopefully, I can take home the win so wecan go inside the ropes at Augusta! Happy Father's Day!"

While Noah was not able to get the job done in Ireland, his runner-up finish lastweek in the U.S. Amateur Championship will guarantee him a spot in the 2025 U.S. Open Championship at Oakmont Country Club and an invitation to the 2025 Masters.

"For me personally, as his father, it was the greatest golfing xperience of my life," David recalled about the week he spent watching Noah. "It felt like the entire world was pulling for Noah Kent, and I think he could feel it too.”

As special as the opportunity was for Noah and his Dad who make annual appearances in the South Florida PGA Pro-Scratch Championship, the most impactful message from Noah’s letter to David was being named a "role model."

"If I've been any sort of example or role model to Noah that's influenced him toget to where he is, it's one of the greatest gifts that I could ever hear from my son."

A former South Florida Junior Tour Member, Noah, being the son of a PGA Member, was born and raised on the golf course, picking up the club at the age of three.

“As a PGA Professional, it was a blessing that he had access to the facilities that I served at,” expressed David. “We had so much fun on the range and course together.”

David was keen on the fundamentals and etiquette of the game and instilled proper mechanics, encouraging Noah to embrace the challenge the game provides and pushed him to always believe in himself.

When Noah received his first set of US Kids clubs, he loved the 3-wood, wanting to hit it over and over again, recalled David.

“As soon as he struck one pure and perfect, he would look up at me and say, Dad, that's the 3-wood sound!”

From an early age, Noah was obsessed and David knew the potential in his son.

At 11-years-old and sitting in church, Noah wrote a note on a church offering envelope, saying that he would be a winner on the PGA TOUR and win the grand slam before Dustin Johnson, one of his golfing idols

While bold, Noah, now 19 and a sophomore at the University of Iowa, took a step towards that

dream at Hazeltine where he entered the 124th U.S. Amateur Championship as the 561stranked amateur in the world.

Noah carded a 77 in the first round of stroke play, which put him outside the top 200 and well shy of the top 64 which was needed to move on to the match play rounds. As David recalled, Noah stuck to his routine, stayed positive and regrouped for a vital round two.

"You could see when he started his round on Tuesday he brought a level of focus and determination to that round of golf that was not quite like I had seen before," explained David. "He got himself into a zone incredibly early in the round, and as you can see, herode that focus and excellent execution all the way to the finish with a 64 to make match play."

Entering the match play portion, it was game on, and David and all his supporters knew it.

"There was a simple confidence in Noah and al of

us supporting him," said David.

As Noah advanced through the rounds of 64, 32, and 16, his quarterfinal math was the standout moment for David. Noah was facing 64th-seeded Ethan Fang, who was coming off a win against the number one-seeded player. Noah was ready and came out firing

"To start your match, birdie, birdie, birdie, birdie was just sensational, and that was really the difference," said David. "It was like okay; Noah Kent can very well run the table this week."

Next up, the semi-final math, a massive opportunity as all competing and watching are aware of the major championship implications that come with a victory. Noah never trailed, and after a two-up victory, he secured entry into the 2025 U.S. Open Championship and a special invitation to the 2025 Masters.

"It was just a beautiful and magical moment to win and

to know what comes with it," explained David. "It was the most amazing celebration around the game of golf for your son."

Noah had made it to the Championship match and was up against Spain's Jose Luis Ballester, the 10th-ranked amateur in the world coming in. Noah and Jose battled for the next 36 holes, with Luis ultimately coming out on top, but the resiliency and composure Noah showed could not have made David more proud as a father.

"I have always believed in Noah, 100 percent in his ability and how he plays the game,"said David. "It is just incredible pride in your son, and the turning point for him happened this week where his selfbelief just completely blossomed."

As a father and PGA Member, the response heard from peers and supporters was almost indescribable for David, recalling the entire experience as "incredibly humbling."

"From the core of our family to the core of the PGA of America, the staff at the SFPGA, my peers, the members at the club, the team at the club, it's amazing, and you feel incredible pride as the father and as a PGA member for how amazingly the entire group rallied around Noah in staggering numbers and staggering ways so positively every day."

A Turf Pirate's Journal $Art and Soul $

Ahoy Turf Pirates! We are rounding the corner to another Fall season, and we all know that things change a bit when the temperatures are more forgiving, and the rains come in a timelier manner. I have been spending a lot of time lately looking for a new home and as you do when you are a vintage Turf Pirate I have been thinking about the past, present and future and the importance or lack of importance of many things. This month’s stroll brought to mind the use of artificial things for certain purposes. Where do you stand on artificial turf flwers, or trees? Where do you stand on autonomous mowers or Artificial Intelligence? I have touched all of these in the last year, and I have been forced to see that they are coming into our lives, and we will need to be able to find that balance of Art and Soul. I got into the business like most Turf Pirates because I love to grow things, all sorts of things and I have found that there is a true art in Greenkeeping that is generations old. I have also installed some very upscale artificial turf and wers that with a little open mindedness while lacking the growth component did possess a fair amount of art and a splash of soul.

Times and technology are changing all around us Turf Pirates. I was in Kansas City recently and went to lunch with Trevor Reid and his senior Superintendents from KC National and the Bluffs. They are all awesome and indeed Turf Pirates as recorded in the rolls of the Ancient and Honorable Tribe of Turf Pirates. They took me to lunch at a new hot spot near the club. It had all the bells and whistles and in the center of a cluster of buildings full of shops, restaurants and apartments was an enormous, symmetrical but very artificial tee (see this month’s picture). It was, well beautiful in a Wizard of OZ kind of way

(no ying monkeys, we strongly dislike ying monkeys). However, can card carrying Turf Pirates and CertifiedArborists slash Master Greenkeepers be allowed to see the soul in an artificial tee or plant? I think we can. I have come to terms with the notion that while I am still on the fence about some artificial items that jump into our day to day lives, I am convinced that some artificial things lke great statues and carvings require such skill and vision that the makers of the work impart a bit of their soul into the work. This is true of many master craft centered pursuits. The tree in KC reminded me that scale and placement can create a magical image, IYKTYK (if you know then you know).

We as Turf Pirates help sculpt the green assets of our properties into golf courses, tennis courts, natures trails and the like and we use a variety of living and non-living things to make and maintain the vision to exceed our stakeholders’ expectations. I have traveled far and seen a lot and I sense the winds of change blowing harder on our industry than ever before, but I have made a choice to see the Art and Soul in the things around me even if it takes more than a glance to see the deeper beauty. Look fast and deep Turf Pirates for all around us is the stuff that dreams have made both living and not. Make your mark, lads and ladies and tip your cap to a world of wonder and our roles in it.

Celebrating Golf Course Superintendent and Greenkeeper Day

SEPT 10, 2024

SUPERSpotlight: Beau Baker

Grey Oaks Country Club, Naples, Fl

Where were you born?

What was your major in school?

Agribusiness Management (Florida Gateway College)

Did you play any sports?

Sports have been my lifelong passion! From baseball to soccer and now golf, these games weren’t just pastimes—they were essential to shaping who I am today. They taught me teamwork, discipline, and a fierce work ethic. Those lessons in grit and perseverance naturally flowed into my career in golf course management.

What got you interested in turf grass?

My fascination with turf grass started with a simple admiration for its beauty. There’s something incredibly satisfying about seeing a golf course with perfectly manicured greens and lush fairways. I was drawn to the idea of working outdoors and having a hand in crafting these stunning landscapes. Turf management is like a perfect blend of art and science—balancing creative design with technical expertise. The chance to work with nature, emphasize sustainability, do my part in environmental stewardship, and create breathtaking outdoor spaces captivated me. It’s a field where my love for nature and my passion for creating something beautiful truly come together.

How did you get your first job on the golf course?

I landed my first job in golf course management through a bit of serendipity and hard work. I grew up near a golf course that I admired for its design and condition. When the course faced economic difficulties and shut down for two years, I seized the opportunity to help bring it back to life. This experience was a real eyeopener and taught me so much about the intricacies of course maintenance. Although I had to

move to Florida before the course reopened, I’m eager to see how it’s evolved under new management. It was a pivotal moment that sparked my passion for this field. What makes your course outstanding?

Our club is truly something

special! We offer three unique and distinct tracks, but the Palm Course stands out for its quintessential “Florida feel,” characterized by its extensive use of palm trees, native vegetation, and expansive beach waste areas. This design creates a striking contrast between the rugged, natural beach areas and the meticulously maintained turf from tee to green. The course embodies the essence of Southwest Florida and offers a one-of-a-kind golfing experience. The greens are top-notch, maintained to perfection for quality and playability. The Palm Course stands out because it combines breathtaking aesthetics with exceptional play, making every round a memorable experience. What do you enjoy most about your job here?

What I love most about my role is the amazing people I get to work with. Our team is incredibly diverse and passionate, from dedicated crew members and reliable vendors to skilled contractors and fellow agronomists. The collaborative environment here fosters a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect that we share makes every day fulfilling. There’s nothing quite like seeing our collective efforts translate into exceeding our members’ expectations. The pride we take in our work and the pristine outcomes we achieve is truly rewarding!

When did you start working here? I joined the team in August 2020, and it’s been an exciting journey of growth and discovery ever since. This role has been a fantastic opportunity for both personal and professional development. How has the experience here helped to develop your career?

Working here has been a game-changer for my career. With a wealth of training and

development opportunities I have endured, I myself have become an expert operator and a wellrounded instructor along the way. The focus on continuous learning and skill-building has expanded my knowledge and capabilities in turf management. I’ve had the chance to dive into advanced techniques and management practices that have refined my expertise. More importantly, understanding the “why” behind each task has deepened my appreciation for the complexities of the field. This experience has thoroughly prepared me for leadership roles, and I’m excited to bring my skills to new challenges. It’s also strengthened my commitment to mentoring others and helping them achieve their own growth.

Who are your mentors and how do you consider them to be your mentors?

Juan Gutierrez, our Director of Agronomy, has been an incredible mentor. From the moment he recognized my potential, he has guided and inspired me in countless ways. His expertise in

agronomy, combined with his outstanding leadership, has taught me invaluable lessons about management, fairness, and strategic thinking. The wisdom he’s shared about dedication, integrity, and the pursuit of excellence has profoundly impacted me. His mentorship has not only honed my technical skills but also shaped my approach to leadership and teamwork. I’m grateful for his guidance and the opportunity to learn from him. If you were to give advice to someone starting in the field, what would that advice be?

For anyone starting out in turf management, my advice is to embrace the journey with patience and enthusiasm. Start from the ground up, as I did, performing entry-level tasks like raking bunker faces and walk-mowing greens. These foundational roles are crucial for building a solid understanding of the field and for long-term growth. Every task, no matter how small, is a steppingstone to greater responsibilities. Embrace adversity as opportunities for growth; setbacks are valuable

lessons that can accelerate your development. And remember, balancing your professional and personal life is key to maintaining passion and effectiveness in your work. Approach each day with eagerness to learn and grow, and you’ll inspire those around you as you build a successful career. How do you plan to pay it forward with others working in golf course maintenance?

Once I step into a head role, I’m committed to giving back by focusing on the development and training of future professionals. I plan to emphasize job safety, teamwork, and attention to detail. My goal is to create a mentorship program similar to the one I benefited from, providing guidance and support to aspiring leaders in the industry. By sharing the knowledge and lessons I’ve learned, I hope to inspire and equip others to excel in their roles and ultimately achieve their own leadership positions. Investing in the growth of others is my way of contributing to the ongoing advancement of the golf course maintenance profession.

The Sanctuary Golf Club Leads Sanibel Island Toward an Even More Sustainable Future

In a state so rich in natural and ecological variety, Sanibel Island on Florida’s Gulf Coast still manages to distinguish itself as a unique natural environment. With countless species of floa and fauna, a 6,000-acre-plus national wildlife refuge, and one of the region’s most scenic and sustainable golf communities aptly named The Sanctuary, it’s a refuge of wonder and beauty…and, yes, occasionally wild weather. Take the storm that blew through in September 2022. Hurricane Ian was, without question, devastating in its surge of warm Gulf water and 150 mph winds. It threw a Cat 4 curveball at the entire southeast, literally changing Sanibel’s landscape and forcing out nearly all residents, who have since returned to resettle and, in some cases, rebuild.

“The strong survives when it comes to plants, and a lot of people are relandscaping and doing a lot of work,” said longtime Sanctuary

Golf Club staffer and Green and Grounds Director Kyle Sweet.

“Fortunately for us, we had a very slow storm surge on the northeast side of the island. There were no videos or photos of cars on our golf course because the storm surge was closer to the beach. We didn’t have that. It came up and went down, and then a huge wind effect of broken trees and debris. But we opened the golf course about 90 days after the storm. The members wanted somewhere to play golf. So yes, we had a change in landscape, but two years later it’s coming back and getting better every day.”

The entire island is still on the

mend but making tremendous progress to the new normal, however that ends up looking and feeling after many members and other residents rebuild their homes and tourists continue to find theirway back. In any event, Sweet will keep sustainability best practices at the fore. Last year he, his crew and the club’s membership celebrated 20 years ACSP for Golf certification with Audubon International.

“We’re doing things on the golf course to get it back to where it was before the storm. A lot of upgrades to the facilities are ongoing. We’re getting a new IPM/fertilizer storage building. The long-term plan is a bigger renovation to [the course] that includes converting several areas of turf into native planted waste areas and adding more naturalized areas along existing course edges. We have a robust plan to present to our membership in November, hopefully for approval.”

In the meantime, Golf Course Superintendent Josh Czarnecki continues to get his full bearings after nearly ve months on the job. “There’s still lot of rehabilitation of the irrigation system to work on, but I’m really still trying to wrap my head around everything that Kyle’s done with regard to his conservation plans,” he says. “I’m still really just getting my feet on the ground and figuring these things out. The GCSAA [Golf Course Superintendents Association of America] is really pushing BMP programs now at a per-state level, so that helps as well.”

What Sweet and Czarnecki are doing to help their course remain in harmony with its delicate surroundings could

thrive. “We’ve sustained our wildlife population well up here following the storm,” Sweet says. “We were the first toverify that armadillos were still on the island after the storm surge and we have a very robust population of softshell turtles, though many died because the freshwater bodies throughout the island were inundated with saltwater [from the storm surge]. We have a great relationship with the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation and have been involved in a box turtle study that they been working on for about 10 years.”

Over his nearly 30 years working on Sanibel, and as The Sanctuary’s conservation thought-and-action leader, Sweet has turned his hobby of photographing “a few birds here and there” into a quasi-profession. “I’ve had a few exhibits on the islands and sold photography people all over the country. Once I did that, I got into an interesting circle of people. I did the University of Florida Master Naturalist training and really ramped up my outreach and education program. I do 20 to 30 tours a year on the golf course. We print our own tour booklets and do all kinds of activities for members and their guests.”

a small project or a small change in thinking or just rerouting a staff member to do one thing different. And you can hopefully work towards accomplishing those things. Some people don’t think they have the time, but you just need to get that site assessment in and then target one section at a time. That’s how we did it. Our renewal process was, okay, we’re going to do the chemical use and reduction, and then we’re going to start documenting the things that we’re doing with outreach and education. We were consistently working towards the goal.

“It’s doable. It’s important. It’s pertinent. And it’s something that members and guests like to see.”

serve as a model for many a club across the country. More than 70% of the island is preserved and protected, encompassing the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, West Sanibel River Preserve, and other smaller preserves managed by the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation and the City of Sanibel. Within the golf course itself, is the Wulfert Gopher Tortoise Preserve that is home to many gopher tortoises. “There’s no real developments left to do on Sanibel,” Sweet says. “Values are increasing because people are having to rebuild homes where the other homes were knocked down, especially after the storm. They’re not buying virgin land and creating homes. I’m fortunate to know many of the city planners, and they’re making improvements, but there’s not a lot of expansion.”

As the island’s human denizens chart their way forward, their animal cohabitants continue to

That’s music to the ears of Audubon International’s environmental specialists, since every partner certification hines largely on its outreach and education efforts. “It’s also kept my spark going with the program through the times we weren’t keeping track of things as well,” Sweet adds. “Our recertification kind of waned for a while. But what kept me going was the fact that we were always getting members, kids, interns, and guests out to see The Sanctuary and talk about what it is we’re doing, why it is we’re doing it, and showing people that we have a very good golf course that is intertwined with nature and unique to the island and its composition.”

After two decades in the Audubon International family, Sweet is more bullish than ever on the value of certification forboth the short and long haul, no matter what a course’s setting, climate or history.

“My advice would be to do that site assessment, get it all down, and be super honest,” he says. “And if you’re not doing it, it’s okay because it could be just a matter of

Four dynamics in golf are in high gear:

• Golfer participation in America and globally has reached unprecedented levels.

• Golf course owners with cash in hand are in renovation modes with aplomb.

• Developers are riding the wave of the sport’s popularity, building new tracks.

• The foundation of golf course quality dictate golfers playing one course over another.

A Family Affair

From Farmland to Golfer Man,

Rodney Davis’s story started back in West Lafayette, Ohio. River Greens Golf Course North began in a small town on family land which was once a farm for food and livestock. In 1965, part of the land was turned into a 9-hole golf course and the other part of land had been planned to be farmed until they saw how well the golf course was doing. They were then advised against putting more seed down and decided to turn the other land into another 9-holes. Jack Kidwell was the architect that helped them turn this dream into a reality; after Rodney’s brother George Davis approached their father John Davis about wanting to build a golf course. John’s exact words were “what the hell is a golf course?” George’s connections through Farmers of America in Ohio were recently making similar changes to their land. This is how River Greens North came to be in Ohio.

Following graduation from high school in 1969, Rodney ventured his way with his father John and brother George to Avon Park, Florida where they proceeded to purchase an old 9-hole golf course. They found out about the land that would eventually become River Greens South while playing at another local golf course in Avon Park. In December

During the transition, there was an “honor box” that was placed

by the front door that you would pay while the guys were out working. Rodney, with the help of a couple partners, started in the golf course construction business in 1971. In 1974, additional land was purchased which became the 18 holes of River Greens South that everyone knows today. Throughout the years, Rodney’s mother Naomi ran the kitchen while Rodney maintained the outside. In 1976, a young woman named Lisa came to work at River Greens and two years later, she went from kitchen help to Mrs. Davis. Together, they formed the ultimate partnership in business and love. They celebrated 46 years of marriage in January of this year.

For many years, Rodney was on the road building multiple golf courses and sports fields through mostly the eastern seaboard, as well as Puerto Rico. Lisa was busy raising their two

daughters – Tina and Amber and son Clay while running River Greens at home. As the years came and went, Rodney decided it was time to come home off the road.  In 2005, Rodney stepped

into the Course Superintendent role full time while Lisa continued to manage the daily operations inside. Rodney then began training son Clay to take over the dream he had built many years before.

In 2019, River Greens celebrated 50 years in business. It remains the longest running family-owned golf course in Highlands County and has been a cherished place to many throughout the years it has been in business. From the moment you walk through the door, you instantly become family. It’s through the sheer dedication and commitment through hard work that has made this little gem withstand the changes life has brought. Throughout the years, Rodney and Lisa have been met with many blessings but some of their very favorites are their 8 grandchildren. Even today, you’ll find Rodny on a tractor, putting in the work with his crew to keep River Greens beautifully maintained for your golfing leasure.

You’re invited to come and see why River Greens has captured the hearts of many and may you too, leave as family.
