The Breast Thing To Do

Terrie with Jospeh Wilson
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month,
lets salute the people of this great game who are doing the “Best Thing” they can to raise tons of dough and awareness through their celeb status. There are literally thousands of golf events hosted every week during the month of October as fundraisers for research and awareness raisers. Having a celebrity name attached to the event always brings muscle. Morgan Pressel, Christie Kerr, and Michelle Wie are all active in bringing the best front and centered. Brittany Lincicome is also one of the many LPGA stars to support the Birdies for Breast Cancer event. These women prefer to focus and remain passionate on the selfless pursuit to fight and eradicate breast cancer. Heroes come along at the best moments, when you need to elevate things, need a little lift, support for the message, just like padding and underwire, it was a perfect fit. Meet Trish Hare and Joseph Wilson our newest support teammates. Trish Hare here. I was very fortunate to grow up in a family that had many adventures while traveling. We would go white water rafting, dude ranching, snow skiing, cruising and of course golfing. As I was finishing my college days at the University of Pittsburgh, my home town, I picked up the game of golf. I would help organize tournaments at family reunions. I met my hubby Kevin, when I accidentally (wink, wink) hit into his foursome and I had to apologize at the 19th hole. We married and moved to Central Florida in 1987. We went on to raise two sons in Tuscawilla Country Club, who have ended up loving the game of golf. It didn’t start that way when they would have to play every Mother’s Day and it was usually hot as heck! They were 8 and 9 and now are 27 and 28. Oh my! I’ve always been in sales; insurance with my father, Tupperware, Keiron PartnersRaymond James, and now Golf Central Magazine and Turf Life. I’ve known Terrie for many years and we have become close in the last couple. I am really excited to help her spread the Turf Life Brand. Well, that’s my short turf life story, what’s yours? Joseph Wilson is a graduate of The Golf Academy of America and a true Turf Life head. After graduating from the Golf Academy of America, he helped launch the golf app scan4beer in Florida, Alabama, New York, Georgia, and Arizona. He has made cocktails for Arnold Palmer and delivered them with a big smile and shaky hands. He spends plenty of time on the turf as a caddy at The Ritz Carlton Grande Lakes, The Arnold Palmer Invitational, Diamond Resorts Invitational, and local golf events. Joseph recently took on the role of Adidas Golf Merchandise Coordinator of Orlando and works charity golf events for Dixon Golf. His 6-year old daughter, Emma Jolee Wilson, is a young Turf Lifer whose name was inspired by the dynamic course designing duo Joe Lee and Dick Wilson. He looks forward to spreading the Turf Life seeds and watching them grow around the world! All anyone needs is a little added support, my cups runneth over!

A Great Day for a Greater Cause On Sunday, August 27, Jennifer Lary of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida discovered how many friends that she really has -- some of whom she had never met until that special day. On that Sunday morning in late August, 84 golfers (21 foursomes) from near and far gathered to take a stand and raise a few thousand dollars for Jennifer who has been
diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer. The setting for this fundraiser was the Atlantis Country Club (190 Atlantis Blvd, Lake Worth, Florida), one of the most well maintained golf courses in Palm Beach County. The organizers of this 8:00 am shotgun golf outing were her professional colleagues at Schwed Law, a law firm of personal injury attorneys in
nearby Palm Beach Gardens. The financial recipients of this fundraiser were Jennifer and her 11-year-old son Jacob. Jennifer is a single mom. By the day of the tournament, which was her 42nd birthday, Jennifer had already started an aggressive round of chemotherapy. Additional treatments will be decided at a later date. The timing of this fundraiser could not have been any better. All credit must be given to Schwed Law, which covered all the expenses associated with this golf tournament, so every penny of all funds raised by this tournament were given to Jennifer and her son as they both begin the biggest battle of their lives.

“I strongly believe the greatest happiness comes from knowing you’re loved,” said Stephen Schwed, partner, Schwed Law. “And we wanted to show Jen how much everyone loves her and her son, Jake.” In addition to covering the expenses of the tournament, Schwed Law committed to providing more support for one of their own. “For every dollar we raised, Schwed Law matched that total with an additional donation,” said tournament organizer, friend, and professional colleague Mindy Hinson Berrios. “So, for every dollar we raised, Jennifer was really receiving two (dollars). I am excited to say that this golf event raised almost $30,000 plus the firm’s match of 100%.” After golf that day, a lavish lunch – attended by golfers and non-golfers -- was held at the nearby Atlantic Grill & Bar, where a number of raffle gifts and tournament prizes were distributed. To add some excitement and energy to the event, this fundraiser featured a variety of competitions and contests: Golf Central • Volume 18, Issue 5
hole-in-one, putting, closest to the pin, and longest drive. To generate more revenue and excitement for the tournament, mulligans for sold for $5 apiece. Since the tournament coincided with Jennifer’s birthday, two birthday cakes were made and enjoyed by the golfers, sponsors, and friends/family of Jennifer. Schwed Law also produced and distributed first-class tee prizes for each participant in the tournament. It included a water bottle with a customized label: “Thank you for supporting Jen in her fight against cancer!” Not surprisingly, Jennifer has been overwhelmed by the level of support she has received from her employer and fellow co-workers. “It’s amazing what has been done for
me,” commented Jennifer. “Schwed Law has been so supportive, very accommodating, and understanding. Within three days of my diagnosis, this golf tournament was being organized.” Even though the tournament has been held, the cause endures. Anybody interested in supporting Jennifer Lary (and her son Jake) with an additional donation can do so by contacting Mindy Hinson Berrios at mberrios@schwedlawfirm.com or a check can be mailed to this address: Schwed, Adams, Sobel & McGinley Trust Account f/b/o Jennifer Lary; 7111 Fairway Drive, Suite 105; Palm Beach Gardens, Florida 33418. Makes Major Donation to Support Children’s Hospital Sacred Heart Health System
and professional golfer Bubba Watson announced a $1.6 million donation to The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart today. It was also announced that Watson will serve as an ambassador for the Children’s Hospital. To recognize the support and ongoing relationship with Watson, Sacred Heart will name the entrance road to the new Children’s Hospital (under construction) as Bubba Watson Drive. The announcements were made Friday afternoon during a ceremony at the hospital’s campus on 9th Avenue in Pensacola. “I always felt like this community helped shape me as a golfer and a

Angie, Dakota, Bubba, and Caleb Watson person,” Watson said. “When I moved back to Pensacola I asked myself how I can make a difference, how I can help build something for generations to come. Our children are the world’s next leaders, and every kid deserves a chance to grow up healthy.
Being involved in our local children’s hospital is the perfect way to do that.” Sacred Heart is part of Ascension, the largest non-profit health system in the U.S. and the world’s largest Catholic health system. The Children’s Hospital began in

1969 and is currently in the process of expanding its facilities and services across the Florida Panhandle and South Alabama. Construction began earlier this year on a new four-story Children’s Hospital made possible by funding from Ascension with help from major donors such as the Watsons and Pensacola philanthropists Quint and Rishy Studer. Expected to be complete in spring 2019, the new Children’s Hospital will be connected to the front of the existing children’s hospital. As a result of the planned naming of the entrance road, the address of the new building will be 1 Bubba Watson Drive. Watson, who was born at Sacred Heart Hospital, made the contribution as part of his family’s ongoing support for the Children’s Hospital. On Aug. 27, he announced a separate donation of $500,000 to The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart

as a result of winning the MetLife MatchUp, an online voting contest associated with the PGA Tour. “We are just overwhelmed by the generous spirit of the Watsons and their love for the children who need our care, not only today but for generations to come,” said Susan Davis, the president and CEO of Sacred Heart Health System. “Their amazing gift to our community will help to ensure that all sick or injured children in our region will have access to the best possible care. We are truly blessed.” Watson added: “My hope in giving back is that others would be inspired to do the same, but in their own way and for causes that they care for deeply.” For more information about the services available at The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart, visit www.sacredheart.org/childrenshospital.

A Moment With The King... Arnold Palmer needs no introduction and his legacy will live forever in the golf world, no doubt. His list of philanthropic work is longer than St. Nick’s on Christmas Eve, I’ve checked it twice. The man laid the blueprint for what is now “Athlete Marketing” which is iconic! But, it was how he connected to the common person at eye level that is regarded as his secret sauce to success and I’d like to share one of those stories.
By Joseph Wilson
While working at Bay Hill, I had the pleasure of taking care of Mr. Palmer many times, and the star struck feeling never faded. He sat at table 65 facing south every day. His table and seat were positioned so that any member or guest passing could see him to say, “hello” and he greeted everyone equally. There was one particular

and Mr. Palmer’s 3 minute egg. Mr. Palmer was having a tough day and was obviously uncomfortable. He playfully yelled at me from across the room to turn the AC off because he didn’t want to pay the bill. There were probably only 5 tables in the restaurant and they all chuckled. One of the tables was a member hosting her grandmother’s 90th birthday that day.
Me on the left
She was an itty bitty lady who used to sing, act and dance on Broadway. She even had a picture of herself performing on stage, how cool! The member asked if I would segue the introduction of the birthday girl to Mr. Palmer which was a pleasure. I walked this beautiful, confident, and jovial Broadway performer towards The King’s table and she began to fill with nerves. We were within a makeable birdie putt distance from the back of Mr. Palmer’s chair and she froze; she covered her face, and turned to walk away. Enter The King. With perfect timing, Mr. Palmer nonchalantly turned around to the frazzled 90 year old Broadway star and said, “Come here young lady, I hear it’s your birthday.” He grabbed her by the hand with astute charm, sat her on his lap and they began Golf Central • Volume 18, Issue 5
to talk as if they were lifelong friends. She lit up with joy as did the entire restaurant watching this exchange with The King unfold. I will never forget this. It was one of those “aha” moments that changed my perspective of the human experience. Here’s a man whose attention is beckoned nearly every five minutes he was awake. He was cold, sick, and tired. Nevertheless, he went out of his way to make this one person feel so special. He didn’t have to do this, but he did every time anyone asked anything of him. It instantly made me want be more kind and receptive of others. Selfless, humble, and bold. He taught countless young men, like myself, how to be a better person inside and I’m very thankful to have shared a moment with The King. 15

Maurice Allen – King of the Long Drive Maurice Allen, professional long drive competitor, is now the No. 1 Long Drive competitor in the World. His championship at the Catawba Classic, Catawba CC, Hickory, N.C. was his second win in as many events and moved him from No. 4 to No. 1 in the rankings. Three wins on the season has put Allen in prime position for the Volvik World Long Drive Championship. Allen hit a monster drive of 395 yards with a Krank driver in a Rev shaft and Volvik Divot XT ball, in the final match to beat Trent Scruggs putting him back on the podium. This is Allen’s first time as the No. 1 competitor in the World Long Drive rankings. He moved quickly through the rankings this past month with a win at the Mile High Showdown in July, followed by his victory at the Catawba Classic this week. This was also Allen’s third victory of the season,

cart girl
What is the funniest thing you’ve ever seen on the golf course? Shh. Don’t ask don’t tell. C’mon are golfers really that funny? Who are we kidding? ;p What type of music do you prefer? All genres…A good 80’s hair band is always a good options, though. What hobbies do you enjoy? International travel as well as domestic, going to the beach, cooking and spending time with my boyfriend Michael and my sweet little Yorkie, Brady.
Shaunessy Giddings Where did you grow up? Finger Lakes, New York….A small town called Lyons Which group of people did you associate most with in high school? All groups… from the jocks to the nerds What is your favorite sport to play? Favorite to watch? Love(d) playing softball but college football (Notre Dame), is without a doubt my favorite to watch. Go Irish! Do you enjoy playing golf? Are they’re any golfers in your family? I do enjoy playing golf and grew up around it as a member of a small country club in upstate NY (Wayne Hills). Both my father and brother are golfers and actually my brother Michael was also a club pro and teaching instructor years ago at a nearby course to Reunion here in Central FL.
What is your idea of “the perfect date”? A nice dinner at a quality restaurant, some good wine and home to bed before midnight before I turn into a pumpkin. Relaxed evening at home, or nightclub and cocktails? Well…I love cocktails or (wine) to be more specific but I’d rather be relaxed at home cooking and sipping on some wine. No night clubs for this girl. Favorite comedian? Jeff Ross… he will roast your tail and make you laugh. Promise! Favorite type of movie? Dramas…love stories…Yes I’m a sap Favorite charity to support? Make a Wish foundation or Give Kids the World. Both incredibly moving! What else would you like for us to know about you? I’m just a simple girl with a big heart who enjoys life. Never stops moving and rarely stops talking…when I was a kid I would get report cards that said I was a bit too much of a social butterfly. They obviously didn’t know I’d spend years making money off it as a cart girl. Guess I showed them.
What do you feel makes this club special? The people… the members and my co-workers. It’s a feeling of belonging and sense of family when you work for Reunion. And a little shameless plug…I have the best two bosses in the world…. Kevin and Tully…you guys rock! What is your favorite part of being a cart girl? What is your least favorite part? I love just about everything this job entails. From the people I work with to the guests and members to being outside in a stunningly beautiful environment. I don’t like inane or rhetorical questions from guests.Don’t ask me if I’m coming back around at 10am. Of course I am! :p If you weren’t a cart girl, what would you be doing? Teaching school or something with kids I suspect. But honestly can’t see myself doing anything else. I put myself through graduate school and paid cash for my masters degree in education working on a Bev cart…Only to teach school for a bit, work in the corporate world and then come back years later to what I love most….driving in circles on the golf course and interacting with people from all over. What is your memorable moment working as a cart girl? Every time Tee it Up for the Troops comes to Reunion for an outing is equally memorable and humbling. Without these people I wouldn’t be able to enjoy my life the way I do. Nor would anyone. Truly specials souls with hears of gold. Do you think the cart girls should be able to dress differently? How you prefer dress if you were given a choice? Keep it tasteful and classy. If you can’t incorporate these elements and get the job done effectively, you’re doing it wrong. 18

What three people would you most like to play with in your fantasy golf foursome? My Dad (who is an excellent player as well), Payne Stewart (a player who won the US Open in 91 and 99, but was my dad’s and my favorite golfer when I was growing up) and my best friend, Nate. What are some of your great accomplishments? I won the Wisconsin State Junior Tournament when I was 17, which was a big accomplishment. But I have such a fond memory of it because it was a 3-hour drive home before cell phones and I
Where were you born? Did you grow up there? Muskego Wisconsin, 20 minutes south west of Milwaukee. Grew up there and went to School there, all the way through Marquette University in Downtown Milwaukee What do you do for a living? I am a Master Certified Leadbetter Golf Instructor for the Leadbetter Golf Academy located at PGA National Resort & Spa What would you like to do for a living? I know it sounds cheesy, but exactly what I am doing. Being a golf instructor lets me do my two favorite things: being involved in golf and helping people. Aside from golf; what do you prefer for fun and relaxation? I play music. I’ve played guitar since high school for fun. This last year, however, I’ve started playing out “gigs.” I play country music with a very talented singer named Billy Craver. Steak, chicken, or seafood? I never order a steak at a restaurant because I like to grill my own. I would say Seafood; I really love all the great seafood that we have here in the Palm Beaches What do you find to be the most annoying habit people demonstrate on the golf course? I would say bragging about their game. I’m not talking about playful banter amongst friends. I’ve played with a ton of guys that say they can hit it 330 yards, then talk your ear off when they’re shooting a million about “I don’t know the problem is, you should see me on a good day.” I’ve seen enough golf to know what kind of player you are without you having to tell me what kind of player you are. And the truth is I don’t mind playing with less experienced players as long as it’s light hearted and fun! 20
Matt Hilton couldn’t wait to see the look on my folks face when I told them, so that was special. Also, in 2009 I successfully set up a Leadbetter location in my home state of Wisconsin which I owned and operated for five seasons. Last book you read? Technically the last book I read was David Leadbetter’s “The A Swing,” but more casual reading, which isn’t too often for me, but I read “Open” the autobiography of Andre Agassi, and it was incredible. Favorite charity to support? Military related charities are important, Wounded Warrior Project, prevention of Soldier Suicide, etc. Also, anything related to Blue Lives Matter is close to my heart.

BOSTON, Mass. – Military facilities around the world provide great options for recreation, fun and fitness at very affordable prices. Golf courses on military bases provide one of the best recreational values of all. Most military courses include everything a golfer needs: equipment rental, a driving range, putting greens, pro shop, and lessons. Military courses have to be self-sustaining and with the number of rounds declining, many courses are now offering Fling-Golf as a way to increase play, recreation and revenue. FlingGolf is a dynamic new sport where players fling a golf ball off the tee and down the fairway with a lacrosse-type FlingStick. It’s fun, inexpensive, non-intimidating and easy to learn making it an ideal game for active military personnel and their family members. As former Commander of the Jacksonville Naval Air Station, Admiral (Ret.) Mark Boensel became an expert on fulfilling soldiers’ health, welfare and recreation needs. Boensel serves on FlingGolf’s Advisory Board and has been instrumental in introducing the benefits of FlingGolf to the military. The NAS Jacksonville has a 27-hole golf course that rents and sells FlingSticks. “Rounds are down at our military courses and we need to fill them,“ said Boensel. “There are no downsides to FlingGolf – its affordable, easy to learn, requires no modifications, doesn’t tear up the course, and provides an entree to conventional golf. It’s a great way to infuse energy back into the game.” FlingGolf uses a lightweight, durable carbon fiber stick with a “head” or basket designed with a channel to hold the golf ball. There are three basic swing techniques: Sidearm/Baseball, Overhand/Lacrosse and Flop shot. On the green, putting becomes a pushing stroke with the ball nestled into the notch on the side of the FlingStick head and one hand down the shaft. “The military is looking to get young recruits active and outdoors while on break, away from their video games, smart phones and other electronics,” continued Boensel. “With FlingGolf you only need one stick that weighs less than a pound – even onboard a ship a sailor can find a place to put it.” A standard FlingGolf shot will travel 150-200 yards or more and par on a course is the same as par for traditional golf. If the ball lands in a bunker or water hazard or out-of-bounds, a FlingGolfer must take a one-stroke penalty. The ball is put back in play by removing the ball from the bunker or hazard along the line of flight and taking the next shot. FlingGolfers learn the basics of the game and the rules quickly and without the expense and learning curve that comes with traditional golf. Jon Fine, PGA Professional and Golf Course Manager at Windy Harbor Golf Club at Mayport Naval Station in Mayport, FL recently ordered Flingsticks. “We are introducing FlingGolf in our Sports Challenge Cup competition this month – a quarterly event that involves 30-50 active duty participants,“ said Fine. “Fling is fun, cool and fast-paced. I really see the potential.” Other military courses that offer FlingGolf include: Keesler AFB, Miss.; Fort Lee, Va.; Hickam AFB, Hawaii; Mayport NAS, Florida, and Oceana NAS in Virginia. “FlingGolf is becoming a stand alone hybrid sport that is growing rapidly across the United States and around the world,” says Golf Central • Volume 18, Issue 5
Alex Van Alen, CEO and Founder of FlingGolf. “A few weeks ago we got an order of 24 sticks from Camp Walker in South Korea and we’ve got courses going strong in Australia and New Zealand.” With more than 320 courses worldwide, FlingGolf is not only growing in popularity within the military but juniors, millennials, non-golfers and golfers alike are finding FlingGolf a fun and addicting sport – just like traditional golf. FlingGolf is also a great alternative for wounded combat veterans who are going through rehabilitation and want to learn how to play golf or transition back into the game. “FlingGolf salutes our military and we currently manufacture a specially designed patriotic stick wrapped in the red, white and blue,” said Van Alen. “In honor of Veterans Day, FlingGolf is offering a 15 percent discount on our Patriot FlingStick.” Getting started with FlingGolf is easy and fun for all ages. Savannah: The Real Deal – Always Has Been
The city of Savannah, Georgia is a wonderful destination for golfers and it’s one of the few locations in the U.S. where the appeal of the city is as attractive as the area’s golf courses. Savannah’s top three main golf resorts, all members of the Georgia Golf Trail, are The Club at Savannah Harbor, Wilmington Island Club, and The Landings. Each of those courses represents a good reason to visit Savannah. The presence of all three resorts in the same area is almost too good to be true.
“The appeal of the golf courses and

the allure of the city’s many Southern cuisine restaurants, riverboat cruises along the Savannah River, architectural tours, spectacular art galleries, Civil War re-enactments, and the city’s number one attraction -- the Savannah Historic Theatre, established in 1818. Of course, any visit to Savannah would be incomplete without a stroll along River Street or a visit to the Historic District of Savannah which is the home of the City Market. Both River Street and the City Market are brimming with antique shops, classy boutiques, fabulous restaurants, oneof-a-kind nightspots, and locally owned and operated inns, hotels, and B & B’s. The City Market is located in a fourblock area downtown and is the heart of Savannah’s entertainment district.

Every night, you should be able to find a live, local band producing a toe-tappin’ sound for visitors and locals, alike. And, if you want to visit the beach while in Savannah, nearby Tybee Island will be your go-to destination. Tybee Island, officially known as Savannah’s Beach, has five miles of public beach along the Atlantic Ocean. T-Shirts, shorts, and flip flops are considered the ‘official’ clothing of Tybee Island. As for the golf at The Club at Savannah Harbor, Wilmington Island Club, and The Landings, their merits as golf destinations speak for themselves. The Club at Savannah Harbor – westinsavannah.com -- hosted the Legends of Golf event on the Champions Tour from 2003-2013. If it’s good enough for the Champions Tour, you will enjoy it as well. Golf Magazine refers to this course as “Savannah’s Golf Centerpiece.” If you stay on-site at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa, you receive complimentary water ferry service to River Street. The Wilmington Island Club – wilmingtonislandclub.com -- is a Donald Ross design and is open to the public. That, alone, is a good enough reason to play this course. This par 71-layout is as fun to play now as it was when it first opened for business decades ago. Everybody who plays the Wilmington Island Club is chomping at the bit to play this course again, soon after they play it for the first time. The Landings – thelandings.com -- is private. If you want a great place to move to in Savannah, you should call The Landings for a tour of the homes and lots while visiting Savannah. The Landings is the number one place to live in Savannah. Its amenities are secondto-none: six private golf courses, 32 tennis courts, and access to a year-round facility which features aquatics, fitness classes, and a wellness spa – all located on the 6,300-acre Skidaway Island. Before booking your trip to Georgia’s First City, check out the website for Visit Savannah – www.visitsavannah. com -- where you’ll find more reasons to travel to Savannah and possibly move there. You won’t be the first one or the last one to make such a decision. Golf Central • Volume 18, Issue 5

“You Drive for Show but Putt for Dough” So many have heard the quote and have used the statement on the golf course with playing partners, but few ever knew who the originator was... until now. Arthur D’Arcy “Bobby” Locke was the man that made this quote famous. Locke was born in Germiston, South Africa, November 20, 1917. We tend to celebrate special milestones with big numbers. Bobby would be

100 years old in November. Bobby Locke’s life has been known best for his ability to putt with “Trusty Rusty,” – his faithful putter that made this Professional Golfer famous. It was obvious from the stories of a workshop behind his home, Bobby tinkered with all his golf clubs, especially his favorite putter. He just wasn’t satisfied with just taking the typical club and playing with it. He had to refine the look… add lead weight here and there… and if the grip started to wear out, he would just add additional grip material to that original, and he adjusted it to be comfortable just for him. Bobby Locke’s story runs very deep in golf history. In 1935, playing as an amateur, he won the South African Open. The first of his nine South African Open Championships. He played his first Open Championship in 1936, at the age of eighteen, finishing a low amateur in the prestigious event. In March of 1938, at the age of 20, Bobby turned professional and started win-

ning tournament after tournament. In 1949, Locke won his first of four Open Championships. What was the common thread through all his victories over the years… “Trusty Rusty.” Locke trusty putter that never left his side. It has been said, that at the end of the day, Locke would leave the course, leaving his clubs to be stored for the next day, but “Trusty Rusty” went with him to the hotel or wherever he was staying. PGA golfer Lloyd Mangrum said of Bobby’s ability to putt with “Trusty Rusty” – “the Son of a B*#&*could make a 60-foot putt over peanut brittle.” It was also said that if Bobby felt that he had hit the right putt, he would just start walking toward the hole and waving to the patrons around the green… as if to say… start cheering… it’s going to go in… and it usually did. So, what is the biggest mystery around Bobby Locke’s life in golf? No, it isn’t the fact that he had accumulated major wealth if his life, buying properties to generate revenue after his golf career was complete, only to end up in financial ruin, later in life. No, it wasn’t the fact that the Professional Golf Association of America banned Bobby against playing in America for making commitments to play on our tour only to back out on those commitments to defend a title in Europe. While many players complained that he was “Just too Good.” Locke’s ban was lifted in 1951, but Bobby chose to not to return to competition in the America after that. The biggest mystery that still sur-

rounded Bobby Locke’s golf career was “Where is Trusty Rusty?” Until now! About 2 years ago, Dr. Stephen Pyles in Ocala, Florida received an email from a prominent auction company, that they had a wooden shafted putter that had gone through their auction house and received a “No Bid.” The message explained the club and asked if Pyles was interested in the club. Pyles, an avid collector of “Masters” memorabilia, stated to me, “he wasn’t interested in collecting clubs, but something about this club just sparked a nerve for what this club really was.” Pyles proposed a number and that he would be interested in acquiring the putter, and as the old statement goes… “the rest is history.” Dr. Pyles went to work researching the original owner (Bobby Locke) of the putter to at least see where the rabbit trail would lead him. Only to hear story after story that the club was missing and no-one knew where the original was. After countless communications with

historians in South Africa, golf club authenticators in America, although there are “countless” replicas, that Bobby himself would give people stating “this is the putter that I won my first Open Championship with in 1949. The “Original” REAL “Trusty Rusty” has been found. Having been given the opportunity to see, touch and swing this amazing putter, it is this writer’s gratitude to historians and collectors around the world, to keep the game alive on the history of golf. Authenticate the obvious… and let us all share in the moment. Closing note! Dr. Stephen Pyles, is a Pain Management Doctor in Ocala, Florida. He is an avid collector of “Masters” Memorabilia.

2017 UF/IFAS North Central Florida Turfgrass Field Day Dr. Jason Kruse
Each year, the University of Florida – Turfgrass Science Center, located in Citra, Florida, holds its annual Turfgrass Field Day for Turfgrass growers, Golf Course Superintendents as well as Park and Recreation Specialists to share the current research projects and findings that continue on campus. The event headed by Dr. Jason Kruse, the UF Staff and students roll out the Red Carpet, so to speak… but in this case it’s more like Green Grass to share their research, answer questions and highlight some of the Master Students and Graduate Students in the programs. This event was partially sponsored by the Seven Rivers Golf Course Superintendents Association. This group of dedicated individuals have given in excess of a million dollars over the past 25 years for Turfgrass research. Much of the funding going to the University of Florida to support their 3-campus location in the State of Florida. Many other sponsors were in attendance, providing an excellent opportunity to share information to more than 200 in attendance.

SUPERSpotlight:
Ryan Gordon GCSAA Class A Superintendent
Sometimes black bears roam the golf course at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge in Washington state, so it’s imperative to be alert. GCSAA Class A superintendent Ryan Gordon has more reason than most to be keenly aware of his surroundings. “I was born with a 90-percent profound hearing loss which, in other words, is deaf,” says Gordon, a 13-year GCSAA member. Gordon, 35, has learned to use his residual hearing with the help of hearing aids. He can hear sounds and noises within a certain range, but not with clarity. “I cannot distinguish between different sounds of speech, mainly consonants such as ‘s’, ‘ch,’ ‘th,’ and so on,” he says. “Vowels are fairly easy for me to pick up on because they are lower sounds.” He is fluent in sign language and has all but mastered lip reading, with one caveat. “I need to be able to see the face of the person that I am speaking to, and from there, it is like putting together a puzzle,” Gordon says. “I will catch maybe 60 to 70 percent of what a person says, and the rest is combining context, body language, and common-sense guesswork to fill in the blanks.” Born in Colorado Springs, Colo., Gordon credits his parents, Craig and Belinda, for their guidance and devotion. “So many of the decisions that they made gave me the tools that I need to navigate my way through society today,” says Gordon. “They found me speech therapists, teachers of the deaf, and didn’t shield me from the hearing world. I was put in mainstream classrooms during my entire schooling years, did well, built a social network, and had what I would consider a normal upbringing. “That is not to say there haven’t been moments of uncertainty, frustration or simply isolation. So much of our world relies on the auditory sense, and there are times that not even the best lipreading skills, sign-language interpreters or hearing aids can overcome the lack of access to information. There are always things like a dimly lit room, making it difficult to lip read or being around someone who tells a joke and you don’t catch the whole thing until everyone else is done laughing. It’s not so funny after that.” Gordon earned his turfgrass management degree from Oregon State University. He started as an assistant at Snoqualmie Ridge in July 2006 and became 32
superintendent five years ago. Snoqualmie Ridge assistant superintendent Cory Fadenrecht can count the ways in which Gordon impresses him. “He’s very detailed and he’s always thinking two steps ahead. He’s very involved with the crew, always wants us involved, makes sure everybody is in the know,” says Fadenrecht, a seven-year GCSAA member. Snoqualmie Ridge is the only Jack Nicklaus Signature course in Washington. Gordon’s work there is admired by Paul Ramsdell, executive director of the Western Washington GCSA.
“Not all Nicklaus courses are superintendent-friendly, but he does a good job making sure it’s well maintained,” says Ramsdell, adding that Gordon is a regular at chapter meetings. “He’s very social. I see him networking with six or eight people, in there with them and communicating.” Gordon and his wife, Liz, have a son named Knox and a busy life away from Snoqualmie Ridge. Obviously, Gordon has built quite a following. “I’ve learned that nothing can stand in your way. No obstacle is too big,” Fadenrecht says. Golf Central • Volume 18, Issue 5

A Pure Golf Experience The Osprey Point Golf Course (12551 Glades Road, Boca Raton, Florida) is officially categorized and listed as a public golf course, but the comparisons to a public golf course stop there. While this course is owned and operated by the Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation Department, the commitment to excellence displayed by the maintenance team at Osprey Point is what separates this course from the competition – public and private. Very few golf courses – private, semi-private, or public -- are consistently maintained at such a high level of excellence as Osprey Point is by its maintenance team. Whether it’s January, June or any date in between, Osprey Point is always in spectacular shape – tees, fairways, rough, bunkers, and greens. In reality, Osprey Point, which has only been open since November 2010, is a golf course that is maintained like a private country club. This 27-hole layout, which is based in the Bert Aaronson South County Regional Park in western Boca Raton, deserves all the editorial praise that one can imagine.
All three courses are blessed with remarkable soil and well maintained turf so the entire property is nearly always in tournament-ready shape. At Osprey Point, the putting surfaces rival any golf course in south Florida; the fairways always provide a consistent lie on the Platinum Paspalum turf; the sand bunkers are penal, but not punishing; the tee boxes are slightly raised and as level as a pool table; the lines separating the fairways from the rough are crisp; and each hole from tee to green is appealing to the eye. “The great course conditions can be contributed greatly to the resilient grass, but it’s an overall team effort,” says Ben Derauf, golf course manager, Osprey Point Golf Course. “Even with the best grass, it cannot be maintained to this level without all individuals involved striving to reach the goal of providing a great golf experience for golfers of all levels.” The three courses at Osprey Point, all of which are par-36 layouts, are named after birds of prey – Raven, Hawk, and Falcon. It’s appropriate for this course’s three nine-hole layouts to have wildlife-like names because
Osprey Point is an Audubon International Certified Classic Sanctuary. Each course has five tees to choose from – silver, white, blue, gold, and black – so it should be quite easy finding your tee-box comfort zone at Osprey Point. The mix of par threes, par fours, and par fives is very well conceived. The best batch of holes at Osprey Point is when you play 7-9 at the Hawk. The 7th is a classic short par four to a raised green which is guarded by sand traps; the 8th is a brilliant par three over Sunset Lake to a raised green which is wide, yet narrow; and the 9th hole is an alluring left-to-right dogleg par five where water comes into play along the entire right side of the fairway from tee to green. On each hole, a birdie is definitely a possibility, but so is a double-bogey or worse. One day, you might birdie each hole and on the following day, you might easily finish with three bogeys. “Osprey Point is unlike any other golf facility in South Florida,” adds Derauf. “There are no homes seen from anywhere on the course, you’re out in deep nature, and the wildlife #9 Hawk
34

is abundant. It’s the only course in the area that has a completely natural feel.” Another aspect of Osprey Point which separates it from any golf course in Florida is the size of its driving range and practice area. There’s plenty of green space to practice every shot – from hitting drivers to practicing three-foot putts. And, there’s another plus to Osprey Point. It is the home of the Don Law Golf Academy, so expert instruction is available as well. For those who have played Osprey Point, it’s no surprise that the course was ranked in the top 50 public courses in Florida by Golf Digest in 2015. And in 2016, Osprey Point also won the World’s Best Eco Friendly Golf Facility by World Golf Awards. Those who play Osprey Point, designed by course architects Roy Case and Jeff Grossman, always walk away impressed. “Osprey Point is a fair, fun and challenging layout set in wonderfully natural surroundings,” says Neil Hodding of England, who played the course in July of 2016. “The holes are well separated from each other and there

is not a house or condo in sight. It is just you, the golf course and the wetlands. I thoroughly enjoyed it.” “Osprey Point is one of my favorite golf courses in south Florida,” says Marlo Garcia Perez of Weston, Florida. “It’s a fun and fair test of golf. It’s always in great shape and the greens
are fast and true. I love Osprey Point.” On your next trip to south Florida, check out the images of Osprey Point online at www.pbcgolf.com. Then make a tee time. WORKING FOR ME
STORY #115
David is a General Manager. GCSAA has had the biggest impact on my career in golf club management. I earned CGCS designation in 1991 and have leveraged this accomplishment to move up into the General Manager role that I have been in for the past 20 years.
David Gourlay, CGCS General Manager – Boca Grove Plantation, Boca Raton, FL

Retired PGA Section CEO forms Cloud Ten! Purchases Golf Courses Rich Smith, PGA, recently retired CEO from the North Florida Section of the PGA of America has purchased his first course under his management company, Cloud Ten! Marketing Group, LLC. His first purchase, Bobcat Trail Golf Club in North Port, Florida, is the club he was working at when he was recruited to helm the fourth largest Section of the PGA of America. Shortly after purchase, Smith invested over 2 Million in a full restoration of the golf course and clubhouse, in addition to renaming the facility Charlotte Harbor National Golf Club. Smith stated “The golf course layout at Bobcat is phenomenal, probably one of the best on the Suncoast, but
needed some TLC in addition to some cultural changes. With the things we are doing, which would not be considered industry normal, we are investing in the game, and it is already paying dividends. Our core tenant is to provide a fun, and exceptional place to play, with service superior to the rest of the market, which has been scaling back at many facilities over the last decade.” Smith seems to have the magic touch. Members and customers at the semiprivate facility are absolutely enamored with what Smith has accomplished already. Currently Smith and his company Cloud Ten! are not only looking at other facilities to purchase, but as word of this renaissance has been sweeping the Suncoast, in fact, other golf facilities have reached out to Smith for guidance, suggestions, as well as management and/or purchase. Smith also stated, “we are excited about focusing on the game and the people that play it, that is where it all starts, but it is not just facilities, ownership, or management. We are in the process of something very exciting and very big on a global scale that will make golf more fun for everybody.” With over 32 years’ experience in the golf industry, Smith has his sights set rather high, not only in golf, but in entertainment. Cloud Ten! has projects developing in Professional Basketball, Running Events, and General Entertainment. “One step at a time, right now we are 100% focused on Charlotte Harbor National Golf Club. All of our other plans have separate project managers who will drive those other areas of our business under my guidance.” Stated Smith.

TGA Premier Golf Expands in Orlando America’s fastest growing
introductory youth golf program, a grassroots effort to bolster the future of golf continues to expand. Dave Seanor, a former sports journalist and owner of TGA North Orlando, has acquired the South Orlando territory. With the consolidation of North and South, TGA of Orlando offers over 30 golf programs at public schools, private schools and community centers. To date, TGA programs in Orlando have impacted more than 5,000 kids through the introductory after-school enrichment programs. “It only made sense to merge the Orlando chapters,” said Seanor. “It brings consistency in programming, marketing and execution of the TGA mission throughout Orange County Public Schools, which is the 11th largest public school system in the United
economic impact on its more than 250 golf course partners nationwide. Once TGA students go through the introductory at-school programs, TGA transitions them and their families to partner golf courses through recreational programs such as camps, leagues and parent-child events. As a result, partner golf facilities gain increased traffic and revenues through green fees, food/beverage, and merchandise sales – as well as a highly visible, turn-key youth golf program. TGA’s (Teach, Grow, Achieve) unique program breaks down the main barriers to golf entry by delivering introductory programs directly at schools and community centers through before- or after-school enrich-
TGA CEOJoshua Jacobs States – and growing.” Seanor believes TGA of Orlando has enormous growth potential and plans to eclipse 50 enrichment programs by the start of Fall 2017. With Orange County comprising 165 public elementary and middle schools, as well as an array of private schools TGA of Orlando could be in 100 locations by 2019. “Consolidating North and South Orlando also helps us complete the TGA Player Pathway through the many golf courses located in the southern part of Orlando,” said Seanor. “We now have more potential partners to host TGA camps, leagues and play days, which are fantastic opportunities for our after-school enrichment students and their parents to take their games to the next level at the golf course.” TGA’s Player Pathway, the first of its kind in the industry, is having a major 40
ment programs. The self-sustaining, no-funding-needed business model puts golf on a level playing field with other mainstream sports and creates a healthy, safe environment for students to learn the game of a lifetime. What differentiates TGA is the station-based
curriculum that includes golf skill progression, education subjects and STEAM Labs, as well as physical fitness and health components. “Orlando, of course, is known as a golf mecca,” said Seanor. “Yet what has struck me since joining TGA is the number of participants’ parents who are not golfers, but have enrolled their children in our programs because they’re familiar with golf’s values and its appeal as lifelong sport.” “Parents appreciate the ease of attending classes at school, the professionalism of TGA coaches, the structure of our curriculum, and the consistency of our communication platform,” said Seanor. “I look forward to expanding that service throughout Orange County, which in turn will help boost golf’s popularity not only among children, but their Gen-X or Millennial parents, as well.” TGA’s golf franchises have now grown to 65 markets in the United States, serving more than 3,300 schools and introducing more than 670,000 youth (ages 5-13) to the game. Ernie Els Signature
This wine, made by cellar master Louis Strydom, is Ernie Els’ vi-
sion to produce an exceptional wine, reflecting their respective commitment to quality. Signature is a ‘classic’ Bordeaux-style blend incorporating all five red varietals grown on the Ernie Els property, reflecting the diversity of the Stellenbosch terroir. Ernie has a particular Bordeaux palate and it was only fitting that the wine should be a natural extension of his character and personal style. The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon really shines in the epic 2012 Stellenbosch vintage. A powerful blend produced from prime vineyards in the Helderberg appellation of Stellenbosch.
WINE NOTES COLOR
Intense purple rim and deep crimson core
AROMA
Nuances of fig jam, cigar box and meat spice slowly arise from the glass, complemented by red cherries and a hint of fine milk chocolate. Impressive concentration and startling depth on the nose.
TASTE
The palate is supported by ultra-fine, layered tannins that are seemingly wrapped in mixed red berry fruits. Pure and elegant, the finish lingers with juicy cassis and a salty, mineral tail.

golf business
What’s Up at Twin Rivers Golf Club is on the rise! On April 13th, 2017 the City of Oviedo purchased the Twin Rivers Golf Club from The Golf Group. Like many area courses the golf business hasn’t been kind to the club and it has been starved for maintenance and upgrades. The City’s goals with the purchase are to preserve the club as a green space amenity for the club’s neighbors and residents of Oviedo. By improving the property to a level that matches the beauty of the surrounding community the City believes that the club has a chance to be successful. With the purchase, the City plans to make investments to the club’s infrastructure to upgrade conditions and attract local golfers to the challenging layout designed by notable course architect Joe Lee. Joe Lee has designed many of the better courses in Central Florida. In September renovations to both the bunkers and irrigation system began. The new bunkers will help playability with new drainage and new sand. Additionally, investments have been made
Alex Tannone with one of his many junior groups in new maintenance equipment and the club will get new golf carts late in 2017. As part of the purchasing process, the City leadership hired Down To Earth Inc. to manage the operations of the golf club. Down To Earth will also preside over the upgrades to both the irrigation system as well as a sand bunker renovation. Down To Earth has a great reputation in Central Florida for maintaining courses to a high level helping to attract new players as well as bring back customers from the past. Many of Down to Earth’s clients are in golf hotbed of The Villages where conditions are always at
a very high level. Down To Earth’s core belief is that you can’t turn a course around unless you improve the quality of playing conditions. The philosophy has proven true in case after case. It is our hope that we can re-establish good relationships with local businesses, UCF and anyone who puts on golf events for their cause or for their employees. Down To Earth was able to retain the vast majority of the existing staff including PGA General Manager Juli Roberts who has been a long time Central Florida Golf Professional as well as an accomplished player and teacher. Also, Head Golf Professional

Alex Tannone who has served at Twin Rivers since 2012 and been instrumental in developing a flourishing junior program. Both Alex and Juli love Twin Rivers and are champions for junior golf working tirelessly to develop local juniors who are the future of golf in the area. The rest of the staff remain in place hoping to see the course flourish. In addition to the existing staff, Down to Earth has added two additional veterans to the Management Team. Business Development Manager Nick Dunleavy has over thirty years in the business of golf including local experience since 1991. Course Superintendent Scott Hullinger is also a Central Florida golf veteran with local turf grass experience
since the early 1990s. Together the team has the benefit of both local knowledge and some fresh ideas from their varied experience. The team is highly motivated to see Twin Rivers Golf Club develop back into one of the most popular clubs in the area. 18th Hole at Twin Rivers “This course is one of the best layouts in as well as maintain relationships with the area and the players the local high school teams. We think I have spoken to are thrilled with the that Twin Rivers can really be a hub for new direction of the club. Everyone is community activity“. Nick Dunleavy happy that the City has chosen to make Local HOA President Bob White and the club a focal point for the community his neighbors were active in trying rather than allow it to be developed. The to save the club from development conditions have already been elevated and are looking forward to the combut we can’t wait to get the irrigation ing improvements. “The conditions and bunker improvements completed are much improved on the course so that we can reintroduce Twin Rivers “said longtime member Mr. White, “but in its new upgraded state this fall. We we look forward to the new bunkers are pleased to be involved with the city to put the course over the top visuleadership that has had the vision to ally. It’s pretty exciting to watch”. ensure Twin Rivers remains viable for Everyone involved is hoping the its residents and visitors alike. The City club can draw enough play and be and Down to Earth are betting that the a great example of what asset the local golfers will patronize the club to course can be to the community. support city efforts to make a positive If you haven’t played Twin Rivers community impact. Northwest Cornwall From Poldark to Doc Martin Located between the scenic landmarks of two of the BBC’s most popular shows – Ross Poldark’s ancient mines (Season 3 started October 1 on PBS) and Doc Martin’s Surgery (Season 8 is scheduled to debut early 2018 on PBS)– are 108 holes of challenging and diverse “Atlantic Links” golf for all players; from juniors and beginners to
seasoned pros. Off the course, anyone that has ever viewed either of those shows will also know that the scenery in that corner of the world is spectacular and that celebrity British chefs Rick Stein and Nathan Outlaw have also put it on the map for serious foodies. Too many American golfers look at the back tee yardage to determine the Foodie heaven – Padstow
challenge of a course, and if you go by only that logic you will sadly give a pass to one of the most unique and challenging links courses – Perranporth – even if it is only 6252 yards from the tips for a par of 72. James Braid was not only a five-time champion of the Claret Jug, he was also a prolific golf course architect and Perranporth Golf Course, that he designed in 1927, is one of his most creative layouts utilizing the natural elements of the land, and the ever present wind, to create a masterpiece that has stood the test of time and is virtually unchanged since opening. Just up the coast overlooking stunning Constantine Bay, also loved by surfers, is Trevose Golf and Country Club featuring 36-holes of challenging, pro-quality and diverse golf. There is the 7172-yard par 72 Championship Links; the Short Course, a 9-hole par 3 course – perfect to hone even the most seasoned game and also for beginners, juniors or an emergency nine and the 9-hole, 3031-yard par 35 Headland Course. Lovingly owned and operated, so far, by three generations of the golfing Gammon family since 1941– it is a golf oasis for generations of players and golf industry personnel from across the British Isles and overseas with a very active membership. Members and visiting golfers come for the championship links, originally crafted by H.S. Colt, that is currently undergoing fantastic, well-received improvements by Tom Mackenzie, one of the hottest architects out there. He and St Enodoc’s aptly named “Church” Course

partner Martin Ebert have been involved with the fantastically well-received redesigns of Trump Turnberry’s Ailsa Course, Royal Troon and Royal Portrush to name a few. The changes will elevate Trevose to the upper echelons of every links golf “must play” bucket and Top 100 lists. But they also keep coming back for the relaxed family atmosphere – yes, nice denim is allowed in the clubhouse and welcoming staff – some of whom have been there well over 30 years. There are a variety of top-quality accommodation options that are selfcatering; a local’s favorite restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner; outdoor swimming pool; tennis courts and other amenities on property making it the perfect base from which to explore all of Cornwall and its links for an extended or short stay. With golf literally at your doorstep, it leaves time to explore the magnificent Cornish countryside and its attractions from the natural – Bedruthen Steps, Trevose Head and numerous amazing beaches with Caribbean-colored waters and rocky coves to the manmade – The Eden Project, Cornwall’s mining heritage, the Lost Gardens of Heligan and maps with Poldark and Doc Martin filming locales are readily available. A short five-minute drive from Trevose is the charming village of Padstow that was initially put on the foodie map by Rick Stein and his cooking skills. My first visit to the area was 20 years ago and Stein had only one small restaurant – I can still taste the perfectly prepared Dover sole. However, some of the “not

to be missed” delicious treats in Cornwall are still pasties, clotted cream and creamy Cornish ice cream. Take home some Cornish sea salt to savor the flavor of your visit throughout the year. Padstow’s picturesque harbor sits protected from the vast Camel Estuary with its shifting sands and just across from the village of Rock – home to storied St Enodoc Golf Club.. If you’re ambitious and fit, you can take the inexpensive passenger ferry across with your clubs and hoof it up the hill on the other side to the Club. Or you can take the more preferable route and drive around the estuary, about a half an hour from Trevose. St Enodoc is as old school as Trevose is progressive. While welcoming to visiting golfers, at specified times – proper attire and etiquette are required at all times when at this true Member’s Club. There are two courses– Church and Holywell – and both are worthy of playing. 49
The luxury lodge accommodations at The Point at Polzeath
Doc Martin’s iconic surgery in charming Port Isaac The Church Course is the championship links and highly-rated amongst the Top 100 Courses of the British Isles. Founded in 1890, the courses still epitomize what we all love in true links golf, there are bumps and hollows, blind shots, huge dunes, uneven lies, fast true greens and best of all stunning views across the Camel Estuary to Padstow. James Braid did most of today’s routing of the Church Course in the early 1900s, while it has been slightly altered and tweaked by the likes of Herbert Fowler, Tom Simpson and more recently, Peter McEvoy it still plays as Braid’s genius intended. The Church Course is renown for two elements – the famous St Enodoc Church and the diabolical Himalaya bunker. The St. Enodoc Church, which parts date back to 12th century, is said to be on the site of the cave where Saint Enodoc lived and was partially covered in sand until the 19th century. Today it occupies a site adjoining the golf course where holes 10 – 14 take a circular route around the classic Norman structure. The other (in)famous element of the Church Course is the 6th hole’s bunker in the “Himalaya” sand dunes that cut through the layout. Only 428 yards from the tips, the challenge comes in that the green is tucked directly behind the huge sand dune, several stories high fronted by an intimidating bunker, and there is no bail out area left if you plan on scoring. Make triple sure you have 50
the correct yardage as you say a silent prayer for your ball to carry the dune and find, if not the dance floor, a decent lie. The next course up is The Point at Polzeath, a parkland hilltop course and member’s club that is being skillfully brought back to life by, Jeremy and Eva Davies, the current owners. The Point at Polzeath is one of the rare true success stories in the golf world through the last decade growing from 50 to over 300 members in less than a decade. The Davies have created and filled a much needed golf niche with a very active local members club, leisure center with indoor pool, first-class opento-the-public restaurants, exceptional five-star self catering accommodations – that you could literally move into, artfully designed honoring the sea and Eva’s Norwegian heritage – and revived a rather neglected golf course, with the consul of golf architect Tim Lobb, that is making great strides to compete with the neighboring links. The Point was recently deservedly honored as England Golf’s 2017 “Golf Club of the Year.” The Point sits on the hill just a short distance from the charming fishing village of St Isaac, home to Doc Martin’s surgery and Restaurant Nathan
Outlaw (a past Stein employee) just named the Best Restaurant in the UK. This corner of Cornwall makes a wonderful addition to the other more well known “Atlantic Links” courses of North Devon –Burnham & Berrow, Royal North Devon (Westward Ho!) and Saunton (East & West) – as well as being a true golf destination in its right. KAY
is on another
mission
I am on another mission…to improve your putting by how you think about putting. by Kay McMahon Putting is NOT a pendulum. It is an equal distance swing. It is NOT a pendulum. The club head should NOT tilt up, flip, or be a pendulum. Contrary to public belief, the fulcrum point is not your wrist. The fulcrum point is your shoulder joint. When discussing putting one has heard all the theories, preferences, stances, set-ups and of course, advice…”follow through”; “don’t move”; “listen for it”; “eyes over the ball”;“left hand low”; the “claw”; “buy a new putter”; and on and on. All that may be valid, but let’s first focus on the most important aspects, the golf ball and the club. Becoming a great putter can make up for a lot of other sins. So let’s start with three basic fundamentals: 1.What must the ball do?. . . ROLL 2.What must the putter do? … Make the ball ROLL 3.What must you do?. . . SWING the putter to ROLL the ball Simple - yes? Let’s first understand what producing “a good roll” of the ball means. To roll, according to Webster, means to revolve or rotate around an axis. The idea of putting then is to create topspin or to roll the bottom of the ball over the top. True roll results in more distance, with less force and keeps the ball better on line and tracking better. The ball rolls farther with less reaction to variables such as grain or slopes and thereby produces more consistent results. 56
Golf Central • Volume 18, Issue 5
When the ball rolls end-over-end it can now fall into the cup from either side, not just the center, and therefore increases the width of the hole by two-thirds. Second, is to understand how to swing the putter and how the putter is used to roll the ball. Often you’ve been told it should swing like a pendulum - yes and no. Swinging like a pendulum simply means to move the putter equal distances on either side according to the distance of the putt. The term releasing the putter simply means to impart some speed or energy to the ball - not to flip at it. Here’s the important part. To roll the ball end-over-end means to keep the putter head square to the intended line and to keep the face as perpendicular to the ground for as long as possible. Third, how do you do that? Your hands operate the putter no matter what type of grip you use, how you stand, or how you see the line. Therefore your hands move the putter and should move approximately the same distance back and through as the putter head. If your hands stop as they approach the ball and the putter head keeps moving to strike the ball, the face angle will change the direction, not only to your intended line, but also the relationship to the ground. This creates sidespin and does not allow the ball to stay on line.
To keep the putter square to the line and square to the ground, your hands must move forward while keeping your wrist position the same or quiet. After learning to roll the ball, distance and direction can then be more easily understood and accomplished. Other factors can then be introduced such as reading greens to determine not only distance (which is 99% of every putt) but also how much break to allow. Operating the putter more effectively and producing a good roll will make you a better putter - I guarantee it! There are a variety of drills that can lead to more effective putting. The “Track Drill” - putting between two clubs on the ground; “Fringe Benefits” - putting from several distances to the fringe; “Round the Clock” - putting around the hole from 3 feet; “The Ladder” - putting 10 balls in a line one foot apart to within three foot circle around the hole. For more details on drills or instruction, visit www.edukaytiongolf.com or call Kay at 518-669-1551.

Breast Cancer Awareness PINK Tour XDream Putter from MLA Golf MLA Golf has developed a patented alignment technology that will revolutionize your putting. This is how it works…we all have internal guides to compare and analyze sensory information that control pace and direction of putts. An alignment system that acts upon multiple line detectors is a key to obtaining veridical motion perception and a perfect in-line stroke surface. When several groups of detectors are activated, these help the brain to make correct judgments. MLA putters are designed to take advantage of these guides. MLA’s patented alignment technology activates the maximum number of coordinated detectors for optimal aiming judgment. The new PINK Tour XDream putter from MLA Golf pushes everything to its limits. A putter performing at this level will make an impact not only on your game but on your putting as a whole. Perfect weight distribution, higher MOI with an interchangeable weight system and MLA Golf’s patented multi-line alignment system will make this putter the most important club in your bag. The Tour XDream is 100% CNC MILLED and is available at www.MLA.golf. 58

Florida Junior Tour Makes Stop in Ocala, Florida October 14-15 was a big day for Gray Albright capturing his first FJT Title in the 13-15 year old Boy’s Division in tremendous fashion. It took back to back birdies on the 17th and 18th holes coming down the stretch at the Ocala Golf Club in Sunday’s final round to force a playoff with Nicholas Gabrelcik of Trinity, Florida. On the first hole of the play-off, Ocala’s Albright closed the door on this victory and assured his spot in the year end Tour Championship. Not to be outdone, The 13-15 Girl’s Division was won by Wyndom Burnett of Citrus Springs, posting an even par two-day total of 144 (69-75) to hold off Chloe Schiavoine from Jacksonville by just one shot. The two young ladies battled it out on every hole, until the final hole when Burnett made a clutch putt to secure the win. Congratulations to both winners and to the entire field of players in this Ocala tour stop.

USGA, ASGCA Collaborate to Advance Public Golf Three Courses to Receive Free Expert Consulting Services
The USGA and the ASGCA have awarded pro-bono consulting services to three golf courses in 2017, providing them with assistance that will help each facility operate more efficiently, offer a better product for their customers and provide increased value to their communities. Last year, a golf course architect and a USGA agronomist made day-long consulting visits to seven facilities. This
year, the following three public-access courses will receive visits: • Rockleigh Golf Course (Rockleigh, N.J.) • Salina Municipal Golf Course (Salina, Kan.) • South Shore Country Club (Hingham, Mass.) “We hope that our involvement with the USGA and the ASGCA will help us come up with a plan to renovate our property to better suit the needs of our residents,” said Tom McGovern, director of golf for Bergen County, N.J., which owns and operates Rockleigh Golf Course. “We hope to learn the most upto-date and effective ways to provide a modern, safe and efficient place for beginners and young children to learn and feel comfortable.” Launched in December 2015, the 62

Stretch and Twist For A Smoother Golf Swing When we watch the PGA and LPGA Tour professionals, we generally see smooth golf swings. Yes, the swings are powerful and consistent, but they are also smooth. One of the reasons is that they are swinging with no restrictions like tightness or a huge lack of flexibility. Let’s face it, if we had personal trainers helping us to warm up and stretch us before and after each round, and physio therapists to work
out any of our muscle tightness, we too would have smooth swings. It is the restrictions, like lack of flexibility and tightness in our muscles that hinder us from being consistent and may even stifle our ability to perform a full swing smoothly. If you don’t currently participate in a consistent workout or exercise routine to help your strength and flexibility, then the following move-
