Having just turned 59, I thought I knew it all, learned all the lessons of life (the hard way) and would have by now realized my purpose in life. A few years after starting Golf Central Magazine I joined Tuscawilla Country Club (or TCC as we call it in “the hood”). As luck would have it, this is also how I met the brilliant 95-year-old Dr. Frank D. Rohter, a.k.a. “Ironman Rohter.” Dr. Rohter is a Professor Emeritus and charter faculty member at the University of Central Florida (UCF) where he taught from 1968 to 2006. He also taught at the University of California- Santa Barbara (UCSB) and Florida State University (FSU). Years ago, we did a feature on Dr. Rohter and his brother Norm. The

boys from Chicago were regular fixtures at the club. Sadly, Norm passed a few years ago, and his charming, quick-witted and fun-loving ways are sorely missed.

Dr. Rohter was introduced to Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics in 1953.

Since then he has been interpreting and sharing these ethical studies. I was privileged to enjoy one-on-one “date nights” at the club where we discussed his work and joked about being mistaken for Anna Nicole Smith and her husband. Dr. Rohter shared Aristotle’s hard to comprehend concepts in his first book, “Happiness and Aristotle’s Truisms” and boiled them down to three areas: 1) The purpose of life; 2) The pursuit of happiness and; 3) Virtues and free will. For those of us who enjoy golf, our happiness is being on the course. For some it’s teaching golf, for others it’s lowering their score, and those with true purpose maintaining the course. For me it’s been publishing Golf Central and living the turf, travel, and philanthropy lifestyle. People need a purpose in life and having direction gives meaningfulness to their being. I am currently reading Dr. Rohter’s second book, “Aging with Happiness”. Let’s see how this sh$t turns out. Making Memorable Moments (and Putts) in the Mountains The latest golf club to join the Georgia Golf Trail is the Chestatee Golf Club. Located in Dawsonville, Georgia, the Chestatee GC (777 Dogwood Way, Dawsonville; www.chestategolfclub. com; 706-216-7386) is situated among the north Georgia mountains and sits along the shore of Lake Sidney Lanier, one of the most beautiful lakes in the southeastern U.S. While Chestatee is surrounded by the north Georgia mountains, the club is less than a 30-minute drive north of the Atlanta suburb of Alpharetta. The Chestatee GC is a semi-private club and is the first planned golf community along Lake Lanier. The homes are inspired by turn-of-the-20th Century architectural styles found in

the South and along the East Coast. At Chestatee, golfers enjoy access to a beautiful and very well-maintained 18-hole championship golf course, which features some well-designed holes influenced by water and the mountain-like terrain. Designed by award-winning golf course architect Denis Griffiths, the Chestatee Golf Club is one of the South’s most picturesque golfing destinations. This 18-hole, par-71 golf course has been given a 4 ½ star rating in Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play.” With access to five different tees, Chestatee plays as short as 4,947 yards from the red tees and as far as 6,877 yards from the black tees. At 6,065 yards, the white tees are an attractive option for most players, especially if you like short par fours,

as there are five of them on the card. “The Chestatee Golf Club is a peaceful place in a par-loving piece of paradise,” said Doug Hollandsworth, Founder, Georgia Golf Trail. Three of the more intriguing holes at Chestatee GC are the 1st, 8th, and 17th. The tee shot on the 1st – a leftto-right dogleg par five -- is struck from an elevated tee to a spacious landing area. A solid drive will give some players a chance to reach the green in two, which brings eagle into the equation. The par-four 8th plays more than 400 yards from four of the five tees, so pars are a cherished commodity at the 8th. The ‘Signature Hole’ at Chestatee is the par-three 17th hole. From the tee, the 17th provides golfers with a spectacular view of the Chestatee River.

Chestatee Golf Club hole 16 According to head pro Todd Gilgrist, Chestatee is a joy to play and every round finishes on a high note. “Chestatee is a great mixture of holes that never is boring,” stated Gilgrist, “I love standing in the 18th fairway and looking uphill to the multi-tiered green and seeing the clubhouse and the American flag in the distance.” Keeping the Chestatee GC in great shape takes a commitment to excellence by the superintendent and his crew. “I feel that you must have the ability to adapt to whatever Mother Nature throws at us is most crucial,” said Jeff Losee, superintendent, Chestatee Golf Club. “No spring, summer, fall, or winter are ever exactly the same. The weather in Georgia can vary so greatly, from tropical storm systems from the Gulf (of Mexico) to extreme heat and drought conditions, sometimes within a month of each other. I also must say that I’ve been extremely lucky to have had a great crew of employees that take pride in the job they do and, without their hard work, our course conditions would not be what they are today.” Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 4

The Georgia Golf Trail Presented by While the Chestatee Golf Club provides golfers with a place to play golf, there are also places for visitors to sleep and eat. Overnight guests can sleep at the Nightfire Lodge and can dine at the Heron Grille. Besides golf, there are also facilities for swimming, tennis, hiking, and biking. One of the appealing aspects of playing the Chestatee Golf Club is that there are other Georgia Golf Trail courses in the greater north Georgia moun-

tains for you to play, as well. Some of those other north Georgia courses and resorts to visit include Brasstown Valley Resort and Spa, Innsbruck Resort and Golf Club, Sky Valley Country Club, Old Toccoa Farm, Amicola Falls State Park Lodge, and the Unicoi State Park Lodge. Grammy Award Nominated Artist Jonathan Butler On Favorite Golf Courses Around the World

®

L.A. based Grammy® AwardNominated Global Recording Artist and Avid Golfer Jonathan Butler is releasing the new single, “Do You Know The Way To San Jose” from his latest album Close To You, which marks the South African singer/songwriter’s 23rd album. The single was the most added track last week at the Smooth Jazz format.

With an accomplished career, awards, accolades, and musical firsts that took the singer/songwriter from South Africa to America, building a worldwide audience along the way, Jonathan found renewed fulfillment when he recast his perspective and welcomed a renewed sense of adventure and more time for his biggest passion: golfing. Butler’s blossoming love affair with golf caught him by surprise. He’s only been playing slightly more than a year, but he’s smitten and plays almost daily, often with other musicians as he tours around the world. “I’m not sure how golf took over, but it attached itself to me. I can go out on the golf course in any part of the world and have ‘guy time.’ I’m completely taken over by this little white ball. I’m so at peace and calm when I’m out there and so relaxed after playing, which I never thought would be the case since I’ve never been a sports guy. I wasn’t trying to find another passion, but it actually found me. Golf has become my saving grace and has given me a look inside me. It’s amazing how much it’s given me,” said Butler, who would love to share his top 5-10 courses and what makes them so unique with your readers.

Butler’s new album Close To You is a tribute to the hallowed pop canon of Burt Bacharach (music) and Hal David (lyrics). The 11-song project features 10 Bacharach/David gemstones from the mid-60s to early 70s (including vocal versions of “The Look Of Love,” “Walk On By,” “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again,” “This Guy’s In Love With You” the first single “What The World Needs Now Is Love,” plus instrumental versions of “Do You Know The Way To San Jose” and his new smooth jazz single “I Say A Little Prayer,” as well as one original composition, the ebulliently autobiographical “Cape Town.” The title track, “Close To You” is a family affair featuring the touching violin introduction of Jonathan’s new wife Nadira Kimberly (Hidden Figures, The Voice) and the return of daughter Jodie Butler on vocals.

In Praise of

Ireland’s Parkland Courses In the past few years

while the cost of playing the great links courses of Ireland has risen dramatically, it hasn’t caused there to be more tee times available – in fact, it seems to be just the opposite. Tee times at the highest rated links courses have become harder to obtain and require trip planning further out. After The Open Championship returns this month to Royal Portrush and Northern Ireland and with the successful Irish Open at Lahinch earlier in July in the Republic of Ireland you can expect this trend to continue. While a trip across the Pond to play the linksland is a bucket list item for many avid golfers don’t dismiss the experience of adding parkland courses to your itinerary. Not only are the layouts worthy of your time, the warm Irish welcomes, flowing Guinness and Craic you also came to enjoy on your journey are especially genuine at these Clubs. And your wallet will appreciate the savings. On a recent trip to Ireland I was excited to visit a handful of parkland courses that had long been on

If you’re heading north from Dublin airport, Killeen Castle GC host venue to the 2011 Solheim Cup is a great day out and a short ride from the airport. This Jack Nicklaus-signature design course is a long test of challenging holes that plays around the storybook Castle. Situated in County Westmeath, about the middle of Ireland, Glasson Country House Hotel and Golf Club is a perfect stop on day of arrival or before

departing – either from Shannon or Dublin airports. It is one of my favorite new discoveries, not long but with a collection of memorable, challenging holes that feature panoramic views over Lough Ree. Family-owned there is loving pride in every detail of the course, hotel and especially the restaurant, where you’ll enjoy one of the best gourmet quality meals of your journey. The charming town of Westport in County Mayo on Clew Bay is a great place to tuck into as a base to explore some of the well-known links courses,

Lofty’s Bar is an institution at Westport GC but be sure and take time to play its own course – Westport GC. It plays under the watchful eye of Croagh Patrick, a famous mountain known for its pilgrimages and has views across the Carrow Beg River to town. Famous for its music don’t leave town without popping into a few of the numerous pubs to sample the sounds – maybe even sing along! Along with golf, Craic, Guinness and music – the Irish also do fresh seafood better than anywhere and some of the most amazing seafood chowder and mussels I’ve had the privilege of sampling are found at Cronin’s Sheebeen Pub in Westport. Celebrated in many of those famous Irish songs, the city of Galway is home to a wonderful seaside parkland course – Galway GC. With stunning views over Galway Bay and dotted with gorse

bushes, you might think on arrival you are going to play a links layout. Even though it features parkland turf, you won’t be disappointed and with the ever-present wind and multiple hazards it will challenge every level of golfer. In Northern Ireland, I had always heard that Concra Wood Golf & Country Club was well worth the visit and it is highly rated among Ireland’s best layouts. Now I know why. I knew it played around a lough but what I Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 4

Concra Wood is surrounded on 3 sides by Loch Muckno

The first 5 holes at Ballycastle play around Bonamargy Friary ruins didn’t realize is that the course is on a peninsula with the waters of Lough Muckno surrounding it on three sides. The greatest surprise was the elevation on the peninsula affording the clubhouse some of the most magnificent views over the lough and providing challenges throughout the routing. Not too far away, PGA National Slieve Russell GC offers a 7,000-yard championship quality routing around over 50 acres of loughs in a pastoral setting. It is one of only eight designated PGA National Courses in the world. A bit of a split personality, Ballycastle GC has a start of five parkland holes around the ancient ruins of Bonamargy Friary before it crosses back across

the road and climbs up and down a steep hillside with thirteen linksland holes. “Hidden Gem” is a much over used idiom but in this case it holds true. It is located just on the outskirts of Ballycastle and is a perfect compliment to its more famous neighbors, Royal Portrush, Portstewart and Castlerock links. Game of Thrones fans will especially appreciate the scenery.

The point is while there are several dozen “must play” links around the Ireland coastline, there are scores of lesser known parkland gems with distinctive charms all their own. While you’ll no doubt remember each and every shot, good or bad, the memories you’ll truly cherish on return are those of the Irish people you met that became lifelong friends. Members at these clubs are likely to invite you for a game and a pint and share captivating stories and a laugh along the way. This is truly the definition of “Craic” the Irish way. I hope on your next or first visit to the Emerald Isle wherever you visit you sample at least one parkland treasure. Please visit Ireland.com for all the places to play on and off the course.

Capital City Country Club is located in the City of Tallahassee in Leon County. In 1913, George B. Perkins organized the Florida Hills Country Club, on land he owned in the southwest portion of Tallahassee. Perkins had secured the services of Herbert H. Barker, a professional golf expert to lay out new golf links. Barker was a noted golfer from England who had won several amateur

golf tournaments, including the Irish Amateur Open in 1906. He moved to

America where he served as head professional at Garden City (New York) Golf Club from 1908 to 1911. Barker is credited with several original golf course designs in the United States.

The 9-hole golf course was com-

pleted in 1914 and received much local, state and national acclaim. In 1924, the Tallahassee Country Club was incorporated, and purchased the golf course property from George Perkins. The Tallahassee Country Club remained a 9-hole golf course for nearly two decades.

In 1935, the Tallahassee Country

Club gave the property to the City of Tallahassee, with the provision that course ownership would revert back to the original members of the Tallahassee Country Club, should the City become unable to maintain it. That same year, the City of Tallahassee applied for and received a federal WPA grant for the expansion of the golf course to 18 holes.

Albert W. Tillinghast, one of Ameri-

ca’s most renowned golf course architects, stopped in Tallahassee later that year, to inspect the golf course as part of his work with the PGA. Tillinghast reviewed and commented on plans for 26

The River Golf Club in N. Augusta –

A Memorable Golf Experience

Set along the banks of the Savannah River, The River Golf Club in North Augusta, SC is a semi-private facility that opened for play in 1998. The facility is conveniently located across from downtown Augusta, GA, just across the Savannah River. Shortly after the course opened, Golf Digest named it a top five new course nationally. Ever since that time, The River Golf Club has continued to enhance its reputation with improvements to the club. In 2002 they hosted a US Open qualifier and were the host site of the mini tour championship in 1999 and 2000. As you make your way around the course, you’ll see the evidence that the property was once an old rail yard as tracks and trestles dot the landscape. The layout winds its way around several lakes with plenty of wetlands, water hazards and, of course, gators. The River Golf Club was designed by internationally acclaimed golf course architect Jim Fazio and features lush fairways, great bunkering and terrific Mini-Verde Ultradwarf Bermuda greens with plenty of subtle slopes and lots 28

of undulations. They’re as fast as any greens you’ll find in the area. The River Club has several holes that you’ll remember for a while. Number 6 is an interesting hole. From the Blue tees, the hole plays 357 yards. Your tee shot is a short carry over water, and is best played up the right side, avoiding the fairway bunker and trees on the left. A couple of bunkers guard the front side of the green, so you’ll need to carry your approach shot on to it. The green is two-tiered so check your distance and make sure you’re on the right level. With a good tee shot, Number nine is a reachable par 5. At 464 yards from

the Blue tees, the best line off the tee is down the left side, that will take the water on the right side out of play; at least for now. A good drive will leave a long iron or hybrid into the green. Miss the green to the right and you’ll most likely find the water; there’s room left if you want to bail out. Sand also guards the front of the green on both sides. Birdies – or better – are within reach! At 324 yards from the Blue tees, Number 16 is a short par 4. There’s water down the right side and you’ll have to cross it twice on your way to the green. The hole is best played with less than driver off the tee, which sets up

a short pitch shot into a large green set at an angle. It will take two well played shots to have a chance at par or better. The railroad trestle on the right side adds a nice touch. Number 17 is an intimidating par 3 with water all around the green. The hole plays 142 yards from the Blue tees, slightly downhill to an island green that is set at an angle. There’s also a bunker middle right that catches its fair share of balls. Par is a good score here. After your round, be sure to stop by The River Golf Club’s restaurant located inside the clubhouse. Sit back and reminisce with your playing partners about shots that were and shots that could have been. You’ll find a good selection of domestic and imported beers and adult beverages as well as a wide selection of clubhouse food: salads, sandwiches, burgers and wraps. They also make a great Monte Cristo; turkey, ham and Swiss cheese on white bread, that’s dipped in batter and grilled to a golden brown and then dusted with powdered sugar and served with raspberry preserves. It’s absolutely delicious. In addition to a great golf course and full-service restaurant, The River Golf Club also offers accommodations that are second to none. Accommodations at The River Golf Club include three cottages, Cypress, Palmetto and Sweetbay. Cypress and Palmetto have four bedrooms each, with two full beds and a private bathroom and shower in each room. Sweetbay has eight bedrooms, each with one king size bed, a private bathroom and shower. Wireless high speed Internet is available in all cottages along with televisions in each bedroom and the living room and full kitchens. There’s also Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 4

a washer and dryer in each unit in case you packed too light. It’s a short walk to the course, clubhouse and practice facility and the deck and back porch overlook the lake and the eighteenth hole. As a guest at The River Golf Club cottages, you’ll be treated like a member with preferred tee times and complimentary range balls as well as member privileges such as free bottled water and towels and merchandise discounts. The cottages can be booked up to two years in advance, with priority given to returning guests. The River Golf Club offers several membership plans designed to meet the needs of anyone. Junior, Senior, Individual, Family, Out-of-Town and National plans are available. Each membership offers unlimited greens fees, priority tee times, practice range privileges, and complimentary handicap services as well as many other benefits. There are also no minimums or assessments. During Masters week, the River Golf Club is a favorite and hosts guests from all corners of the world. They consistently provide outstanding course conditions and service. One of the most appreciated aspects of The River Golf Club is the pace of play. By scheduling only an appropriate amount of play during this time, they are able to ensure a proper spacing on the course. Your Masters package at the River Golf Club includes green fees, carts, taxes, range balls, tee packages, course yardage book, beverage cart service, breakfast and lunch. The River Golf Club is the perfect place to host a golf event, corporate outing or banquet. Large outings are usually held on Mondays so that the course will remain open for our members. They also

offer banquet packages meeting room rentals, and in-house catering. They also have an upstairs room that is a great spot for business meetings; followed by a round of golf! Whether you’re looking to warm up before your round or spend some quality time on the practice range, The River Golf Club has some pretty impressive practice facilities. They offer a full-length driving range where you can hit every club in the bag. You can practice your short game on the chipping green and putt to your heart’s content on one of two practice putting greens. It seems that a lot of golf courses have given up on trying to compete with the big box retail stores when it comes to golf apparel. But the River Golf Club wants to help you look your best when you step to the first tee. Their pro shop offers golf apparel from classic apparel companies such as FootJoy, Cutter and Buck and Adidas, as well as newer companies like Under Armour and Bald Head Blues, and many more. The River Golf Club combines a spectacular layout with a fun and fantastic setting to create a golf facility that is friendly and enjoyable. With five sets of tees, the course is playable for golfers of all abilities and was designed with golfers in mind. When combines with their cottages, The River Golf Club is a “hidden gem” as far as golf travel packages go and could be the perfect location for either a family stay or corporate retreat. For more information, give them a call at (803) 202-0110 or visit their website at www.rivergolfclub.com. Tavatanakit Captures First Professional Title

Less than two months

since turning pro, Patty Tavatanakit (Bangkok, Thailand) is now a Symetra Tour champion. The UCLA alumna fired a sizzling bogey-free, 7-under par 64 this afternoon on the Donald Ross Course at French Lick Resort to win the Donald Ross Classic by three strokes at 13-under overall. “I feel like I’m living a dream, just to play golf and not think about anything else,” said Tavatanakit, who entered the final round two shots back of the lead. “My mental game has got a lot stronger and knowing there is more golf ahead gives me the vibe to stay calm, that the rest will take care of itself. I’m happy to win and the hard work is paying off.” A seven-time tournament winner and two-time Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) First Team AllAmerican selection for the Bruins, Tav-

Patty Tavatanakit atanakit finds the winner’s circle in just her third career start on the Symetra Tour. Her previous finishes of tied for 14th at the Island Resort Championship and solo second in the Prasco Charity Championship have Tavatanakit on the fast track to climbing the Volvik Race for the Card standings. Furthermore, the victory is the bookend of a week that started with Tavatanakit setting an 18-hole tournament scoring record of 11-under par

61 in the final round of the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic. She recorded the bogey-free performance as a tournament sponsor exemption. “When I was deciding to turn pro, I told myself to just commit,” Tavatanakit said. “So far, so good and I have no regrets. I like my job and love this sport more every day. I like the feeling of getting something when you have to work hard for it. I’ll be doing this for a long time and am glad to

Going 8-under par on this course is pretty good because you have to be so patient. Definitely a lot more confidence in my game, even though I already had plenty and confirms a lot of things. Scoop Some Scallops This Summer at Plantation on Crystal River and West 82° Grill Will “Cook Your Catch” Crystal River scalloping season runs July 1-Sept. 24, 2019

Scalloping season commences on July 1 this year in Crystal River and Plantation on Crystal River, a hidden gem on Florida’s Nature Coast, is offering guided and non-guided scalloping deals packed full of value. Guided scalloping package rates start at $796* for midweek stays for two guests and includes: • Two-night stay in a garden or water view deluxe room, patio room or golf villa • Guided scalloping tour including mask, snorkel and fins with one of the area’s top captains • Souvenir bag with mesh scalloping bag, scallop recipes and water • Chef-prepared cook-your-catch from the day’s harvest (scallops or fish) for lunch or dinner and serve with two sides** • Breakfast daily For those bringing their own boat, rates for the unguided package begin at $516* for mid-week stays for two guests. This rate includes ramp launch, trailer storage and seawall tie. Seawall tie is first come-first serve. A popular activity for families, scalloping is like snorkeling, but with the simple addition of a mesh bag for storing the harvest. Most scallops can be found in the shallow grass flats of the Gulf of Mexico that range anywhere from three to six feet deep. Only two to three inches in length and located inside a fan-shaped shell, the scallops can be easy to spot with their 30-40 bright blue eyes, but provide a good chase, since all those eyes 40

help them detect predators. Once daily scallop limit has been reached, they can be prepared by the hotel for a delicious cook-your-catch meal. Guests are asked to help protect the precious waters by not putting empty scallop shells back in the water. If guests choose not to book a scalloping package, guests can still have their scallops cooked**. For just $14.95 per person, the chef at West 82° Bar & Grill will prepare guests’ shucked scallops during lunch or dinner one of four ways: scampi style, au gratin, sautéed in lemon butter or Chef’s choice. From the dense fog and brilliant sun, to the high winds, cool coastal air, and diverse terrain, the California Coast presents many challenges. And yet it’s still one of the best winegrowing areas for producing world-class Chardonnay. Each of the vineyards chosen for this wine offers the best expression of its respective appellations, carefully blended to achieve balance, complexity, and richness of flavor.

growing season The 2017 growing season was definitely unique. Average winter rains made for healthy vines throughout the coastal regions going into spring and early summer. Bud break was a few days later than 2016, but with no frost events, the growing year was off to a great start. Warm, sunny days followed during fruit set and the growing climate was classic: cool mornings with warm, sunny afternoons and no dramatic heat events. A July heat wave signaled the crop to ripen. Harvest began in orderly fashion, but record-breaking heat and low humidity in September pushed speedy picking for blocks that were at optimum Brix. The heat wave was followed by a cool period and even a bit of rain that elevated sugars back to optimal Brix. Extended hang time through much of the latter portion of September into October allowed us the luxury of picking mature fruit with great flavor and developed tannins.

winemaking Picking decisions were made with ripe flavor in mind. Maritime influences in the evening tempered the afternoon’s warm sun, allowing for a long hang time and resulting in fully developed and concentrated flavors. Fermentation took place entirely in stainless steel tanks with minimal intervention, and lees stirring created a velvety mouthfeel. All of the wine underwent 100% malolactic fermentation and was aged on French oak for further depth and roundness.

The company is always on the cutting edge of innovation that 50

leads to greater enjoyment and convenience for its traveling customers. “We are pleased with how our company has evolved over the years in an ever-changing golf and travel industry,” said Dalgleish. “Our No. 1 goal – providing the ultimate travel experi-

ence for golfers wishing to experience some of golf’s greatest venues – hasn’t changed. Some of our methods of providing those experiences, however, have changed over the years. We are constantly innovating, as we remain cognizant of our customers’ needs.” One example of the company’s evolution is the focus in recent years on the combination of great links golf and cruising. evolution as a cutting-edge provider of golf travel can be found in the company’s proprietary golf travel research tool. PerryGolf’s website features QUICK QUOTES℠, the industry’s only true online trip calculator which produces an instantaneous quotation. “Virtually everyone considering a custom tour like ours will begin by researching their options online. We did a complete redesign with that visitor in mind who particularly appreciates being able to get a price before they engage a sales agent.” said Dalgleish. “It’s quick. It’s simple. Visitors to our new site will be impressed.” PerryGolf remains the industry leader for custom land golf trips to such iconic courses as the Old Course, St Andrews. A PerryGolf travel expert, who becomes the group’s personal concierge, handles details for the entire trip, from golf tee times and caddies to sightseeing, dining reservations and ground transportation. PerryGolf has been working with St Andrews Links Trust longer than any existing tour operator. As an Authorized Provider, PerryGolf has access to specific Old Course inventory by early June of the preceding year, and can provide a choice of confirmed starting times on the Old Course for clients who

wish to have PerryGolf create them a customized golf trip to Scotland with guaranteed play on the Old Course. Another example of the PerryGolf’s innovation was the introduction of luxurious VIP Golf Coaches and Concierge Drivers in 1998. The company used a Mercedes chassis, originally designed to accommodate 20 passengers, and completely reconfigured both the interior and storage to provide an ideal environment for groups of 8 to play, relax and sightsee. It began with spacious leather armchairs, each with its own armrests and facing a table. Since then, the vehicles have evolved with different sizes but always include the current amenities any traveler would reasonably anticipate. The vehicles are equipped with a refrigerator stocked with soft drinks and bottled water and include an ample storage area. The Concierge Driver will meet you at the airport upon your arrival and return you to the curb for your departure. In between, he will take care of everything from handling your golf equipment and luggage to caddie arrangements, dinner reservations and sightseeing suggestions. freddy's fairway thoughts

By Fred Seely • Can we start talking about too much spectator noise at PGA Tour events? You know, the kind fueled by those $10 beers? The players are quietly complaining, knowing that going public might stir up on-course animosity. Yes, tournaments need the concession money, which means there may not be much of an effort to calm things down.

• It's now expected at the new Sawgrass Country Club clubhouse will come in at 65,000 square feet. It not the biggest in the neighborhood: the TPC Sawgrass building across A1A is 77,000 square feet.

• Our clubs don't have the luxury of a waiting list and, these days, not many do. Can't be more than a dozen in Florida. For those who do, take this idea from Baltusrol, the big-time tournament site in New Jersey. Each year they stay in touch with the wait list folks by having a tournament for them.

• Read your entry forms closely before you send them out. A southern city recently got a female applicant for its amateur championship and the committee admitted they had no recourse but to accept her, as there was nothing to indicate it was a men's event. But, there wasn't anything about a yardage allowance for ladies, so she'll have to play the tips, too. We'll update when they play the event.

• The PGA Tour pretty much gets what it wants around Northeast Florida but they stepped into the wrong nest when they put up a huge cell tower on the land where they're building their new campus. The tower is very close to a neighboring private school's “lower school” campus in Ponte Vedra and that stirred the parents who pay big bucks to send little Trevor and Kaitlen. A petition got over 600 signatures, citing “possible health risks;” country commission meetings drew big crowds. The Tour pulled the usual strings (politicians, etc.) but the noise continued, so they've now decided to “pause” activating the tower for a year. • The First Tee's fundraiser at the TPC Sawgrass clubhouse brought in a record $110,000. That was $27,000 more than last year. The theme was “Taste of The First Tee” and chefs from over 15 local clubs prepared dishes. • PGA pro Rhonda Ferguson is now teaching at the teaching facility at the World Golf Village. She was operating the River Bend Golf Club in Green Cove Springs, which now has closed as the state will run an expressway through that property. The golf course has been around for some 50 years and originally was named Reynolds Golf Club after the big Reynolds family development. In recent years, the once-popular resort town has fought a losing battle of not being near an interstate and has settled in as a quiet retirement area. Yes, the powers that be in college golf are watching Tori Moulton, who last month won the First Coast Women's Amateur, the biggest (and just about only) women's event in the Jacksonville area. Her 7270—142 was two ahead of a strong field. Mouton is a rising sophomore at The Bolles School, the private Jacksonville high school which is an athletic powerhouse.

Sawgrass Country Club continues its major support of the Jacksonville Area Golf Association Scholarship Trust, which awards college scholarships to students with affiliations with JAGA clubs. Sawgrass leaders last month presented a check to the Trust for $12,925. On hand for the presentation were (from left) General Manager C.W. Cook, JAGA president Randy Nader, a Sawgrass member, JAGA director Ray Gottschalk and Director of Golf Ron Philo. Since 1974, JAGA has awarded approximately $1.8 million in scholarships to approximately 375 students. Currently, there are 25 students receiving benefits from JAGA. • Former PGA tour staffer Ward Clayton is one of the producers of the move “Loopers: The Caddie's Long Walk” that's showing in theaters around the country. Several country clubs also have paid to have a private showing for their members. The documentary is narrated by comedian Bill Murray and includes interviews with numerous players and caddies. • Tim Tebow doesn't play much golf, but he lives on a golf course and just upgraded. The famed athlete/public speaker likes his privacy and several years ago paid $1.4 million for a home in Glen Kernan, an ultra-exclusive Jacksonville development halfway between the city and the beach. He since became engaged, and now is moving to a $2.99 million, 8,300 square foot place overlooking the 11th green. Brother Robby will have the old house to himself (and his 7 handicap). • Almost every course has a goose problem. Nothing seems to work, not the “Goosenator” device, nor border collies, nor oiling the eggs. Killing them has been out of the question in these politically correct times. Developers in Denver tried another tackthey've argued that the goose poop is a health hazard, and a judge agreed. To make it more palatable to goose lovers, they promise to donate the goose meat to the needy.

Garrett Giles of Palm City is glad he waited out a three-hour rain delay. Giles almost left the South Florida Junior PGA Championship to play in a recreational basketball game because he didn’t think the golf tournament would get finished Thursday and the scores would revert to 18 holes. When play finally resumed, Giles made a 25-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to rally from a two-shot deficit and win the Boys 16-18 division. Giles shot a 3-under 68 on the Fazio 2 Course at Boca West to finish at 5-under 137 “I had no idea what the greens were going to be like after the delay, but when I saw one of my partners hit it 8 feet past the hole, I played a lot more break and didn’t hit it as hard,” said Giles, a senior at Martin County High. “It’s by far the biggest tournament I’ve won.” That partner, Jude Kim of Plantation, three-putted the last hole for a double bogey to finish at 4-under after a 69. Kim had birdied the last three holes before the delay. Andie Smith of Hobe Sound shot 73 to win the Girls 16-18 division by two shots at even par. Giles, Smith Win South Florida Junior PGA Championship, qualify for National Junior PGA Lucie had a 71 and finished second at 2-over 144. The winners and runners-up each qualified for the National Junior PGA Championship in July at Keney Park Golf Course in Hartford, Ct. “The delay gave me time to think about what I had to do on the last hole,” said Smith, a sophomore at The Pine School who has committed to Duke. “At the same time, you could also get ahead of yourself. I’m happy to qualify for the tournament in Con-

necticut.” Nip is no stranger to the national stage, having won the National Drive Chip & Putt and finished runner-up at Augusta National. Considering she just turned 13, this was another impressive performance for the home-schooled Nip. “Winning the Drive Chip & Putt is still my best accomplishment, but this means a lot,” Nip said.

South Florida PGA Hosts Senior Series Pro-Pro at the Country Club of Coral Springs Playing in their first-ever South Florida PGA Section event since joining the SFPGA, the North Palm Beach Country Club duo of Allan Bowman, PGA Director of Golf and Chris Dachisen, PGA Assistant Golf Professional won the 2019 Senior Series Pro-Pro at the Country Club of Coral Springs. After getting off to a fast start, making birdies on each of their first six holes, Bowman and Dachisen never looked back, carding a 12-under 59 to win by one stroke over Tony Kelley, PGA Assistant Golf Professional at the Island Country Club and JC Anderson, PGA Director of Instruction at the Club at the Strand. Bowman, Dachisen, Kelley and Anderson finished with 12 and 11 birdies apiece, respectfully. The event featured 52 professionals aged 50 who joined together in teams to compete in an 18 hole better ball format. Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 4

Judy Alvarez, PGA Director of Instruction at Monarch Country Club (Palm City) has been awarded the Patriot Award, Scott Kirkwood, PGA Director of Golf at Ocean Reef Golf Club (Key Largo) has been named Merchandiser of the Year (Private) and the South Florida PGA Section has won the Herb Graffis Award. The Patriot Award annually recognizes a PGA member who personifies patriotism through the game of

Judy Alvarez golf and demonstrates unwavering commitment and dedication to all who have served the United States. Alvarez has been teaching golf to people with disabilities and veterans since 1990 and has been involved in Folds of Honor, PGA HOPE and Salute Military Golf Association. Alvarez has helped to establish six PGA HOPE programs in South Florida, impacting more than 500 veterans in the region. Additionally, Alvarez hosts a free golf clinic for veterans once a week, provides year-round adaptive golf programs and has been an advocate for golf and the impact the game can have on veterans. Throughout her career, Alvarez has taught more than 10,000 veterans and students with disabilities the game. “I’ve always felt compelled to share with local organizations what I do and how the game of golf can help to benefit our veterans,” said Alvarez. “My goal is to provide a safe environment for a veteran to let their guard down, relax, feel safe and enjoy the experience. Ultimately it 56

is about their accomplishments.” The Merchandiser of the Year, private category is presented to the PGA member who has demonstrated superior skills as merchandiser in the promotion of golf. Kirkwood of Ocean Reef Club and Vice President of the South Florida PGA has dedicated his time to creating a shopping experience for each customer that comes through the golf shop, prioritizing relationships between customer and associate as well as uniquely offering products that branch beyond golf. “I am honored to be recognized as the Merchandiser of the Year for the private sector,” said Kirkwood. “At Ocean Reef, we make it a priority to offer nothing but the best, most positive experience for our members and guests when they visit the golf shop.” The Herb Graffis Award is designed to recognize a PGA of America Section for extraordinary contributions in the area of player development. By prioritizing youth, diversity and the military, the South Florida PGA aims to impact more lives in south Florida through the game of golf. In junior golf, the SFPGA offers yearround programs for all ages, impacting more than 9,300 youth golfers over the past 12 years. In 2007, seven events were conducted for 250 participants and in 2018 over 150 events were administered for over 1,700 participants, an increase of 700 percent. In addition to extensive junior golf programming, the SFPGA Foundation has impacted more than 12,000 lives through junior

Scott Kirkwood golf, charitable gifting and scholarships. “This award is a testament to the tireless effort of South Florida PGA members who strive to grow participation and enjoyment in the game of golf every day at their facilities throughout the section,” said Geoff Lofstead, Executive Director of the South Florida PGA. “It is also a testament to our Section and Foundation board of directors for providing the direction and resources that have made growing the game a primary initiative of section staff. It is an incredible honor to be recognized on a national level, amongst the great work being done by the 41 PGA sections around the country.” The PGA of America annually recognizes 11 PGA Professionals and one PGA Section. Alvarez and the South Florida PGA will accept the Patriot and Herb Graffis Award during the 2019 Annual Meeting in West Palm Beach this November and Kirkwood will be recognized as Merchandiser of the Year during the 2020 PGA Magazine Merchandiser of the Year Conference prior to the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando this January.

Twin Dolphin, Built with the Natural Environment in Mind The Twin Dolphin Golf Club, designed by Fred Couples, is a Par-72, 7,156-yard course located in Los Cabos, Mexico. The guiding principles of the Fred Couples design team included “not moving a lot of dirt around” and letting the three dominant on-site arroyos help guide the design strategy. As Fred Couples stated, “Let’s make it like God left it here.” Each hole was intentionally designed to blend seamlessly with the land around it. Twin Dolphin Golf Club is an Audubon International Signature Sanctuary Course. The Audubon International Signature Sanctuary Program was created to recognize developments such as Twin Dolphin, 60

term management of the property. They hired a full-time Sustainability Manger, Alonso Ortiz, to oversee the development and permitting of the property. The golf superintendent, Russell Hewitt, who will oversee the long-term success of the property said, “Environmental stewardship is very important to us, especially with the National Marine Preserve status of Santa Maria Bay and its Blue Flag beach certification.” In order to best protect the natural environment, conserve water, reduce waste, limit chemical use, and provide clean and safe water, Twin Dolphin followed Audubon International principles and the following was incorporated into the design and management plan for the property:

Twin Dolphin #10

• An on-site reverse osmosis/desalinization plant was constructed for nonpotable golf and landscape irrigation purposes • An on-site wastewater treatment facility recycles the water back into the irrigation system • Clubhouse and Red Doors, unique on-course amenities that bring the clubhouse experience onto the course, were designed to maximize natural cooling • Precise water management and state-of-the-art sub-surface drip irrigation, allowing the Golf Course Maintenance team to reduce water inputs • Judicious selection and use of fertilizers and pesticides based on an ecological risk assessment • An effective irrigation management program • The location of the maintenance facility was specifically selected in an easily accessible area far from protected natural areas Prior to construction, a sensitive clearing plan was established, grading from the center lines out to the perimeter of each golf hole and leaving the surrounding native landscaping intact. A buffer was left on the perimeter of each hole to protect native desert vegetation along

the course periphery. The ongoing planting of natural and native flora throughout the property continues to provide natural habitats to various species. A few of the species that were maintained, replanted and preserved along with a few interesting factoids are listed below.

• Pitahaya Dulce - also known as dragon fruit • Cardon – the largest cactus in the world • Pitahaya Agria – bright red, golf ball sized fruit, historically used to prevent scurvy

• Palo Adan – the bark can be cooked and used on cuts/abrasions

• Viejitos (“old man cactus”) – fluffy white tufts of hair

• Damiana – medicinal purposes for problems with the nervous system and as a diuretic

• Cholla Pelona – eaten by cattle because it has small and few spines

• San Miguelito – a vine that grows to 25 feet in length, seeds float and eaten by birds

of the Twin Dolphin Golf Club’s ac-

• Torote Colorado (“elephant tree”) – bark used for dye, twigs used to make tea • Lomboy – missionaries once used the bark to tan hides

Two are stalwarts in the industry and one a young man who wants to “make a difference, one yard at a time.” We are indebted to BASF for sponsoring our speakers this year. Dr. Bruce Clarke of Rutgers, Center

for Turfgrass Science and an Extension Specialist in Turfgrass Pathology at Rutgers, is an icon in the industry. His research has focused on the identification and control of biotic and abiotic diseases of cool-season turfgrasses. This has involved the use of field studies to assess pathogen dynamics, as well as controlled environment and greenhouse studies to ascertain the relationship between environmental stress, cultural management, and disease development. He has also conducted research on disease forecasting and detection systems, and the identification of disease resistance in turfgrass germplasm. Dr. Clarke says, “The principal goal

of my outreach program has been the development of best management practices for the control of turfgrass diseases such as anthracnose, dollar spot, gray leaf spot, and patch diseases caused by root- and crown-infecting fungi. My research findings have been utilized by turf managers in North America, Europe and Austral-Asia to improve disease control and turfgrass quality, while reducing chemical inputs through the use of improved disease management strategies. As Director of the Rutgers Center for Turfgrass Science, I am also responsible for providing leadership to foster internationally recognized research, undergraduate, graduate and continuing professional education, and outreach programs in support of the turfgrass industry.” A native of Cresskill, New Jersey, Clarke earned his undergraduate degree in forest management and his Ph.D. in plant pathology from Rutgers. In 1982, Clarke joined the faculty as an assistant extension specialist in the plant pathology department. He was named director of the Center for Turfgrass Research in 1994, after one year as interim director. Under Clarke’s guidance, the Rutgers program has become a center of scientific and educational excellence. “Dr. Clarke has that uncanny ability to relate to and connect with whomever he meets,” said James A. Murphy, Rutgers University extension specialist in turfgrass management. “His communication skills are outstanding in all situations: one-on-one, small groups or large audiences. He can communicate with persons of any background, and he is just as effective listening as he is speaking.” On the podium with Dr. Clarke is Dr. Beth Guertal. Participants of Raising Men Lawn Care the Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences, and was named the Auburn University College of Agriculture’s first Rowe Endowed Professor. Dr. Guertal has taught various turfgrass and educational subjects in Cuba, Argentina, Spain, England, Mauritius, China, New Zealand and Canada. More importantly she has worked extensively with turf managers in the southeast and knows her audience. Beth is the current President of the Crop Science Society of America, and as such she helps to lead all turfgrass scientists in the nation. In her 25 years at Auburn she has taught turfgrass management to many undergraduates, and also advises graduate students. She currently teaches Soil Fertility to all students in Crop Science. She will speak on “Fertilizers Demystified: Debunking Common Myths and Setting the Record Straight,” discussing various fertilizer facts, myths and perceptions in the presentation, with welcome interaction from the audience. Rodney Smith, Jr. will present a session that is just downright good for the soul! Hailing from Alabama, Rodney has received national recognition with his program to provide service to those unable to care for their lawns. lawns free for veterans. “It was a way of showing my gratitude for their service. I am also thankful to Delta Airlines who sponsored my trip to Hawaii and Alaska.” Rodney relished hearing the vets’ stories, whether it was World War II, Korea, Vietnam or Afghanistan and believes all veterans deserving of a helping hand. More importantly, Rodney encourages others, especially youths, to get involved and mow yards for free for the elderly, disabled, single moms and veterans as an outreach and way of giving back. He is making a difference! One lawn at a time! To find out more about Rodney’s nonprofit, Raising Men Lawn Care, go to his web site at weareraisingmen.com. Keynote, Dr. Beth Guertal, with Dr. David Han examining research plots in Auburn While we are beefing up our program with these amazing keynote speakers, the Deep South Turf Expo is planning some additional entertainment this year. The Deep South Four Ball Tournament will be reprised and held on Monday at The Preserve and on Tuesday at Fallen Oak. While teams are battling it out over the Four Ball tournament at Fallen Oak on Tuesday in the two day tournament sponsored by Beard, Greenville, and John Deere Golf, the Preserve Golf Club will host our Scramble Tournament as it has for the past four years. AmeriTurf will

sponsor the tournament and Redox will provide drinks for both tournaments. Following the Scramble at The Preserve, whether you golf or not, we are inviting everyone to come out in the late afternoon to attend a Tail Gate Picnic that is being planned by our partners, Aqua-Aid, Beard, Greenville Turf & Tractor, Jerry Pate Turf & Irrigation, John Deere Golf, Ladd’s, Residex and Simplot. The food promises to be amazing and a good time will be had by all! Lest we forget, in addition to the golf there will be the Skeet and Trap Tournament on Tuesday as well, and we have provided some new venues for the Sports Field Tour. The Tour will begin at historic Beauvoir, where attendees will have lunch and take a tour of the extensive grounds. Following that they will travel to Biloxi High School where they will view the baseball, softball and football fields. The tour will end at Shuckers Stadium in time for everyone to take part in the Tail Gate at The Preserve. We are really excited about our program this year! Registration for exhibitors and attendees is open on-line at DeepSouthTurfExpo.org. Make plans now to attend. Getting together with friends and colleagues in Biloxi in the Fall is always a special time for our industry. Don’t miss it! 63

Scott Grego for golf began when he worked for his uncle on Dundee golf course in Michigan as a teen. This led him to his turfgrass management degree at Michigan State. His internship led him to Dominion Country Club in San Antonio and eventually he became superintendant of the golf course. After seven years, he transitioned into the sales industry selling chemicals, fertilizers and equipment, leading to his recent appointment at Capillary Concrete’s Sales and Installation Manager for the Central US. “Our growth and future projections have provided us the opportunity to hire a leading sales staff to match our leading bunker liner and turfgrass management applications. We are excited to bring the team together to make another huge impact for us in the near future,” said operations manager Travis Chivers. Capillary Concrete is a patented sports-base drainage and sub-sur-

Greg Nichols face irrigation material. It is strong, environmentally sound and easy to mix and install. It has the ability to drain enormous amounts of water and store them for a slow and later release, still keeping a minimum level of moisture by the scientific principle of capillary action, which is the ability of a liquid to flow in narrow spaces, in opposition to the gravitational force. Capillary Concrete is the only sports base material that can remove water and replenish moisture at the same time, essential in presenting the best sports surfaces, park turf areas, equestrian sports fields, volleyball courts, etc. Capillary Concrete was developed by Martin Sternberg, a Swedish golf professional, course superintendent and entrepreneur. The company is partly owned by Swedish golfing legend Annika Sorenstam. The product has been installed on over 400 golf courses around the world.
