In 1969 Fred Rogers, better known as Mr. Rogers, testified before the U.S. Senate about saving the Public Broadcasting System (PBS). Despite slim odds Mr. Rogers not only managed to save PBS but got the Senate to increase funding for the network. Mr. Rogers’ message was wanting everyone to “be my neighbor”. We are all neighbors in our community and especially in the golfing community. When the 9/11 tragedy struck Mr. Rogers was asked to make a public service announcement about the event. No matter what our particular job, he called us to be “tikkun olam” (which means “repairers of creation”). As I listened to him talk I reflected on those who rarely get the credit for the way they look after the creation. This includes the various keep-

A One of a Kind Golf Experience

Mount Vintage Golf Club is part of the Mount Vintage community, a wellestablished, private community which encompasses 2,000 acres of gently rolling terrain, with centuries of history that can be traced back to Native American tribes. Careful planning has gone into the community in an effort to enhance the natural beauty and tranquility of the surrounding area. Mount Vintage is home to discerning people who appreciate a quiet, yet funfilled lifestyle. The Town Center and Athletic Club complex is the heartbeat of the community.; it’s a place where well-being and social engagement work hand in hand as residents taking part in a plethora of social and physical activities. A Junior Olympic sized pool, 6 Har-Tru lighted tennis courts, two bocce courts and a fitness center provide residents with plenty of options. Inside, you’ll find a plethora of clublike activities: Book Club, Garden Club and a Bridge Club just to name a few. As far as golf is concerned, Mount Vintage Golf Club is a semi-private club that will rival any club in the area. With 27 holes, Mount Vintage can be played as three distinctly different 18-hole courses. Mount Vintage offers golfers a superior golfing experience, due in part to the club’s high maintenance standards and an extreme attention to detail. The course originally opened in 2000 and was designed by renowned 10

golf course architect Tom Jackson. Jackson was able to use the unique topography of the area and the lush tree cover to create a golf course that can be enjoyed by players of all abilities. With five sets of tees, each hole is challenging and memorable, from your opening tee shot to your final putt. You’ll find lush Bermuda fairways and roughs and Champion Bermuda greens accented by stacked stone bridges and walls reminiscent of Augusta National. Golf legend Byron Nelson once referred to Mount Vintage Golf Club as a “magnificent layout.” The Chester nine was the front nine of the original 18-hole layout that opened in 2000. Chester is the highest rated of the three nines, primarily because each hole is a challenge on its own. Chester greets you with rolling fairways, well bunkered green complexes, and putting surfaces that will test the best of putters. As you play the Chester nine you can’t help but be taken aback by the beauty of the golf course; not only in the elevation changes but the sheer design of each hole. But don’t let its good looks fool you; this course has some bite. The 9th

hole is a par 5 that plays downhill off the tee, with a creek that runs through the fairway that has to be dealt with at some point. Once you clear the creek, it’s all uphill to a large, wellprotected green. Consider taking an extra club on your approach shot to compensate. As you walk off the green, you’ll understand why this nine is the favorite! The Vintage nine also opened in 2000 and was back nine on the original 18 hole layout. Of the three nine-hole layouts, Vintage plays the longest. Although you’ll experience elevation changes on all three courses, those on Vintage are the most dramatic. Eight of the 9 holes have either a downhill or uphill shot of at least 30 feet - a couple have both – which forces you to give a little more thought to your club selection. A rangefinder with a slope feature can be a valuable tool! The three holes that make their way around Pavilion Lake - holes 5, 6, and 7- could all be categorized as signature holes on the Vintage Nine and have been referred to as the “Amen Corner” of Mount Vintage. Number 5 is a par 4 that plays 387 yards, with a downhill tee shot. From there, you’ll have an uphill approach shot across a finger of the lake to a large green fronted by large, deep bunkers on either side. Number 6 is a par 3 that requires a carry back over the same lake. It plays slightly Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 7

downhill to an elevated green with bunkers in front and back and a large tree shadowing the far-left side. You’ll have to cross the lake one last time with your tee shot on the par 5, 7th hole. The fairway slopes right to left and the farther up the top of the fairway you can hit your tee shot, the farther you’ll be away from the water and the more roll you’ll get. Large trees on the right start to come into play on your layup shot but if you favor the left side, you’ll take them out of play and leave a clear path into a well undulated green protected in front by bunkers. As you make your way back to the clubhouse after playing the Vintage Nine, you’ll look back upon your round as quite memorable, hopefully for all the right reasons! The Independent nine was the last nine to be built at the Mount Vintage Plantation Golf Club and opened in 2008. Although the course has many of the same characteristics of the original 18 holes, it is still a course all its own. Elevation changes are evident from the moment you step on the 1st tee, a dogleg left par 4 that plays downhill off the tee with a lake on the left side of the landing area. Water comes into play on 8 of the 9 holes, creating many risk/reward opportunities. The 8th hole is a gorgeous par 3 that plays slightly downhill, over a

Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 7

small lake to a triangular green. Locals refer to it as the “Million Dollar Hole” and PGA.com has recognized #8 as part of South Carolina’s Dream 18: Hidden Gems. Nine is another favorite, a long par 5 hole that requires an uphill layup shot followed by an uphill approach into a green that is well guarded and extremely undulated. The green has two tiers and is separated by a four ft. ridge, so it is imperative to hit your approach to the right level. Mount Vintage Golf Club has one of the most unique clubhouses in the country. The center portion of the clubhouse is a fully restored piedmont plantation house that dates back to around 1840. It is flanked by two matching wings. In its entirety, the complex includes a professionally staffed pro shop, locker rooms and The Grille restaurant. Just out the back door of the clubhouse is a state-of-the-art practice facility with a full-length driving range and practice green. The apparel selection in the Mount Vintage pro shop includes a wide range of companies including Turtleson, Tail, Straight Down, Foot-Joy, Titleist, Bridgestone, Callaway and TaylorMade for both men and women. They also have a good selection of hats, shoes, balls and accessories; everything you’ll need to

look and play your best. The Grille at Mount Vintage is a great place to grab some good food and drink. And it’s not just for those that are just coming off the course; it’s not unusual to see locals and businessmen from N. Augusta and Edgefield County enjoying all that The Grille has to offer. The décor could be classified as “rural

elegance,” a beautiful glass lined dining terrace loaded with Southern charm that promotes a relaxed atmosphere and a unique dining experience. The furnishings are comfortable and let you take the weight off your feet after a busy day. Menus are updated monthly and offer a casual twist on traditional American and Southern fares. Residents of Mount Vintage as well as the public are invited to dine for lunch and Sunday Breakfast. Popular events include “Thirsty Thursdays,” which features weekly “spirit” specials from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The Grille is also available for private intimate lunches, dinners, and parties and can accommodate up to 75 guests. For larger events, there’s the Mount Vintage Town Center which accommodates 150 guests. With Mount Vintage Golf Club, what you see is what you get. No pretentious members or glitterati trying to be something they’re not. Just good, down to earth members that realize that their country club is something special. The camaraderie between members is evident once you set foot inside the pro shop. David Usry and his staff are knowledgeable, professional and know how to strike up a conversation that focusses on you, the member. And, after playing the course, you’ll see that Mount Vintage Golf Club is the kind of country club you’d want to be a part of, with modern facilities, great dining and fantastic golf. Mount Vintage offers several membership classifications for families and singles including Full Memberships with unlimited golf privileges, Associate 12

Membership, Social and Corporate Memberships are also available. Regardless of the membership plan you choose, you’ll receive unlimited range balls, access to clubhouse facilities for family and accompanied guests, access to the men’s and women’s locker rooms,

full charging privileges and advanced tee time reservations. And, if you join now, there is no initiation fee! For more information on joining the Mount Vintage Golf Club, give them a call at (803) 279-5422 or visit online at www.mountvintagegolf.com.

Arnold Palmer To Be Honored With U.S. Postal Stamp In 2020

The United States Postal Service announced today that it will be recognizing Arnold Palmer with the issuance of a nationwide stamp as a part of its 2020 stamp program. The U.S. Postal Service will honor Palmer for his positive impact and compelling story, rising from humble beginnings to become a globally revered champion. The U.S. Postal Service notes, “with drive and charisma, he helped transform a game once seen as a pastime for the elite into a sport enjoyed by the masses.” “To have my father celebrated in this way is a true honor,” said Amy Saunders, Palmer’s daughter and chairwoman of the Arnold & Winnie Palmer Foundation. “It’s something I think he would be proud of as both an individual and as an American, and it’s a wonderful way to preserve his legacy.” The stamp features James Drake’s action photograph of Palmer at the 1964 U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md. Palmer’s name appears in the top left corner and the words “Forever” and “USA” are printed along the bottom of the left edge. Art Director Anto18

SUPERINTENDENTS: The MVPs of the Georgia Golf Trail

The key to the success of any golf course is not rooted in who was the architect of the course, the reputation of the golf pro, the design of the clubhouse, or the wealth of the membership. Instead, it can be directly traced to the knowledge, talent, and commitment to excellence of its superintendent. In a nod of acknowledgement to Golf Central Magazine’s TurfLife brand, every great golf course must have healthy turf in order to thrive and survive. And, the responsibility of maintaining healthy turf is in the capable hands of superintendents. 20

The weather in Georgia can vary so greatly, from tropical storm systems from the Gulf (of Mexico) to extreme heat and drought conditions, sometimes within a month of each other. FTC Charity Golf Dinner-Dance Promotes Life Changing Charity

On Oct. 4, the Florida Thoroughbred Charities hosted the Bogey Bash Golf, Dinner Dance event at Ocala National Golf Club. Thirty-five teams played in the golf event, while 215 guests turned out for the dinner and dance. The event honored recently passed retired thoroughbred Carterista who lived almost 20 years at the farm supported by FTC. In an upset, the Ocala Breeders’ Sales team of brothers Jeremy and James Ventura, Julio Mosquera and Juan Cortes took first place with a score of 57, beating several of the perennial winning teams from years past in the FTC

Tournament. There was some suspense as two teams tied with the “Best Ball” score of 57 and three with a score of 58. Ocala National’s general manager Jason Dowman and team used tie-breakers to determine the overall winning team. Second-place went to the Ocala National Residents team led by Ron Wilson. The team also included Charlie Dobbs and NFL player Ernie Mills. Born in Dunnellon, Fla., Mills was a wide receiver in the NFL for nine seasons during the 1990s. Mills played high school football at Dunnellon, college football for the University of Florida and played professionally for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Carolina Panthers and the Dallas Cowboys. Prizes were provided by Ocala National, Golf Central and ACE Equestrian belts. FTBOA Board member and Social, Community and Charity Chair, Valerie Dailey “This year the event grew and with the addition of the dinner dance and auctions, we raised even more for charity,” she said, “The promotions on the course were also a big hit with par-

The band Undercover Hippies was sponsored by Debbie Green who also served as co-chair for the event along with Donna Delahunty. Green has vast experience with events and golf tournament, and she has a special connection with Ocala National which made the event flow smoothly. Former NFL Detroit Lions player Hess Hempstead served as the emcee and charity ambassador for the day. He brought along with him a number of professional athletes including Mike McBath, former defensive lineman for the Buffalo Bills (1968-1972), the Washington Redskins (1973) and the Florida Blazers (1974); Steve Pisarkiewicz, former quarterback for the St. Louis Cardinals (1977-1979) and the Green Bay Packers Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 7

(1980); Mike Reilly, former linebacker for the Chicago Bears (1964-1968) and the Minnesota Vikings (1969); Reggie Branch, former running back for the Washington Redskins (1985-1989); Randy Coffield, former linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks (1976) and the New York Giants (1978-1979); Corris Ervin, former cornerback for Central Florida, selected by the Denver Broncos (1988); Bob Stinson, former catcher for the LA Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals and the Houston Astros (1969-1980); and Phil Crosby, former fullback for the Buffalo Bills (2001-2003). Debra Green noted, “When it is all final… we expect more than $34,000 was raised which is more than double from last years.” Green went on to say, “It was so much fun, we are already planning for next year.” The Florida Thoroughbred Charities annual golf tournament raises funds for the Florida Thoroughbred Retirement Farm at the Lowell prison that changes the lives of ladies in the program and gives a lifelong home to the horses.

Fabian Ludwig

BallenIsles Country Club

in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. is pleased to welcome Fabian Ludwig as the club’s new director of culinary and executive chef. Ludwig will oversee all facets of food service and preparation, across all six of BallenIsles Country Club’s dining venues. A seasoned culinary professional with more than 25 years of experience, Ludwig most recently led the opening of the eight restaurant venues at the new Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center in Aurora, Colorado. Prior to his time in the Denver area, Ludwig was the executive chef at the iconic New York Marriott Marquis in Times Square. Before the Marriott Marquis, he led all F&B operations for the former Revel Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey. “Chef Ludwig comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and extensive background leading sizeable operations with multiple venues like ours,” said BallenIsles Country Club General Manager and COO Ryan Walls. “We have a strong team in place, which is now further enhanced with the appointment of Chef Ludwig. We are excited to welcome him and his fresh ideas to the culinary program.”

Ludwig’s culinary career has taken him to Hungary, Switzerland, England, Bermuda and Germany where he started as an apprentice in Hamburg. While training under certified master chefs, he developed a style rooted in classical technique, while preserving his

personal interest of using high-quality seasonal ingredients that reflect market preferences. Ludwig has a degree in Culinary Arts from Gastromiche Fachhochschule, located in Hamburg. For more information, visit www.BallenIsles.org.

About BallenIsles In 1963 legendary Florida developer John D. MacArthur and the PGA of America teamed up with golf course architects Dick Wilson and Joe Lee to design a championship-caliber golf facility. Over the next ten years, BallenIsles, then called PGA National Golf Club, hosted numerous major tournaments like the PGA Championship and PGA Seniors Championship and was home for the Professional Golfers’ Association of America. The Club was also the host site for the original PGA TOUR Qualifying School and held the inaugural PGA Merchandise Show. When the MacArthur/PGA of America agreement expired in 1973, the Club was renamed the JDM Country Club for John D. MacArthur. For the next 15 years, the prestigious local country club hosted many celebrities and professional golfers and staged many events on the three golf courses on the property. In 1988, the three golf courses and surrounding property were sold by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and renamed BallenIsles Country Club. A multi-year and multimillion dollar plan to develop a private country club community was unveiled. Since the early 2000’s, BallenIsles Country Club has been consistently ranked as one of the Top 100 Clubs in America. A $35 million clubhouse renovation was completed in November 2018, featuring 115,000 square feet of luxurious space; three championship courses with 54 holes of golf; a world-class 23-court tennis complex including a stadium court that seats 500 and two Pickleball courts; and a state-of-the-art Sports Complex with a full service Cosmo & Company spa and salon, fitness center, Pilates studio and resort-style swimming pool. 26

Who else can say that their morning consists of dodging deer, cranes, snakes, great blue herons and alligators? My least favorite part is when guests bring their own alcohol onto our course when they know very well that a luxury course such as ours, prohibits it. If you weren’t a cart girl, what would you be doing? I’d be working as an aesthetician, which is what I went to school for. 28

improving performance

ING Spring Conference: New Products

The recent 29th Annual ING Conference in Sebring, FL, featured several new products that can help golfers of all skill levels improve their performance. One of those was the Total Golf Trainer. Most training tools tend to focus on one aspect of your game – alignment, Takeaway, release, short game, distance, etc. The big advantage for TGT is that every aspect of the game is covered by this unique training aid. “The Total Golf Trainer products provide real time feedback. It is like having a coach with you all the time,” said Fernando Vega of TGT. “You can practice in your home, office or on the range and make swings that make a difference.” The Total Golf Trainer 3.0 is the ultimate golf training kit for the avid golfer looking to improve your range time or reinforce your lessons. This kit has everything you need to improve your swing and lower your scores. A lot of avid golfers work hard on their game, and sometimes might not see improvement despite hitting thousands of balls on the range. There is a reason for that. “If you are not getting instant feedback when you make good swings, you’re probably going to have a tough time eliminating bad habits,” said Michael Gish, head instructor for TGT. “The Total Golf Trainer 3.0 teaches how to correctly move the club to improve the takeaway, downswing path, impact, release, and provides the instant feedback you need.” The Total Golf trainer Arm trains wrist and arm positions, flat lead wrist or bent trail wrist. Create more exten34

sion in the backswing, increase your angle of attach and learn to unleash power at impact. The total Golf trainer Hip teaches correct hip turn in the backswing, feeling a proper load. Learn to sequence the downswing increasing speed and rotation through the ball. The 3.0 kit is not just for advanced golfers. It is also perfect for the beginner golfer, teaching how to move the

club correctly, how to control the wrist and arms, and how to produce powerful, consistent lower body movement. The TGT 3.0 kit costs $150 but is currently on sale for $135. For more information, visit www.totalgolftrainer. com. Another groundbreaking product launched at ING was the series of beautiful long irons from New Ground Golf. These irons were created for players who aren’t fond of hybrids. The lineup consists of three irons: a 16°1-iron, a 19° 2-iron and a 22° 3-iron. The 431 stainless cast heads have a distinctive cambered sole with seven deep grooves that make the club almost glide over the turf and allows the iron to get the ball up and out of most any lie especially long grass. New Ground positioned the center of gravity low in head and back towards the trailing edge. Combined with a thin, reactive face, the technology provides more ball speed. “We came up with this design for folks who don’t like hitting hybrids, and there are many of those players,” said co-founder and club designer Joe Jung, a former Callaway employee who is a Master Club Fitter and Builder. “Our hand-ground heads were designed with the versatility of a mid-iron that can be hit successfully out of all types of lies. “You can hit it right, you can hit it left, you can trap the ball. You can create all types of launch angles. It’s a club that is almost industrial in appearance. When you stand over these golf clubs they are arguably the most beautiful long irons ever made. Best part is, they are very affordable.” The irons run between $119 and $149. For more information, visit www. newgroundgolf.com. Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 7

Senior LPGA Championship at French Lick Resort Gives Back to Riley Hospital for Children When it comes to charitable giving, golf has long been recognized as the most prolific supporter among all professional sports in the United States. The $3 billion-plus professional golf has presented to worthy causes is a humbling figure, but the real inspiration comes in meeting the beneficiaries of such support. At the Senior LPGA Championship at French Lick Resort, which was held for the third consecutive year, a special legacy is being built between the tournament, the resort, the community and the families of the benefitting charity, the Riley Hospital for Children. The Senior LPGA Championship presented by Old National Bank was contested on the Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort in French Lick, Indiana. The field of 78 players included, members of the World Golf Hall of Fame, Major Champions, and past LPGA stars over the age of 45 who competed in the 54-hole Major Championship. During tournament week, there’s a palpable air of competition. It’s a senior women’s major championship, after all. However, the prevailing sense of camaraderie and community is stoked by the presence of the nearly two dozen Riley Kids (patients and former patients of the

42

hospital) who are invited to partake in the week’s festivities with their families. Some of the Riley Kids had the opportunity to announce the pros on the first tee during the golf tournament, others shared their stories at the Pro-Am pairings party, others got the chance to caddie for players or just meet and socialize with the legends of the women’s game. So, while defending champion Laura Davies eyed up her shot at a repeat and a full field of 45-and-older pros chase her down for a share of the $600,000 prize purse, there’s still a fun-spirited levity to this event. There’s also a clear appreciation for the support French Lick Resort has committed to the Riley Children’s Foundation over the past five years, which is expected to surpass $1 million at this year’s event. “French Lick Resort has been an amazing champion of the Riley Children’s Foundation. Making these brave kids and their families a focal point during the Senior LPGA has provided

immeasurable inspiration and a deeper connection with the fans and community,” says Brad Moritz, senior corporate gift officer for Riley Hospital for Children. “The Riley Kids and their families are treated like royalty when they’re at that incredible resort and their gratitude and positive attitudes leave a lasting impression on everyone they meet.” Last year, Indiana native and the oldest-known living Riley Kid, Genevieve Bennett Slater was on hand to introduce the players at the first tee. Now 92 years old, Slater was a Riley patient between the ages of five and 16, when she had multiple surgeries to avert a birth defect. “The patients and their families get to be a part of something special and the people they meet walk away with a deep, unforgettable appreciation for the work the Riley Hospital for Children does for so many children in our Indiana communities and beyond,” says Joe Vezzoso, vice president of sales for French Lick Resort. It Has Come A Long Way, Baby!

Eagle Springs - 7th green c1920s - Courtesy of State Archive of Florida

The roots of the Eagle Springs Golf Course (171 Country Club Lane, DeFuniak Springs, Florida) can be traced to the early 1920s when the McKaskils Golf Course was first opened. This golf course was constructed at the urging of a group of progressive-thinking local businessmen who realized that a golf course would attract visiting tourists to their community, especially during the winter months. But, sadly, this golf course had a short existence. In 1924, local resident Mr. W.B. Harbeson of the Harbeson Lumber Company

donated 160 acres of land and provided the funds for a nine-hole golf course to be built. Under the leadership of Harbeson’s son, Walter Harbeson, 40 acres of land had been cleared, stumped, leveled, and covered in Bermuda and carpet grass by August 1924. Good quality turf was expected to have taken root by Christmas of that year. Walter Harbeson’s goal was to have the golf course open for play by January 1, 1925, however the exact date of the golf course opening remains unknown. By 1928, this golf course was officially listed as a nine-hole Florida golf course -- which played to 3,140 yards. Fast forward to 1930. According to the 1930-1931 American Annual Golf Guide, the DeFuniak Country Club was listed as a nine-hole, par-36 golf course with sand greens, which played to 3,347 yards. Walter Harbeson was listed as the club president. In 1934, 40 Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) workers were brought in to enlarge the tees, improve the greens, and build a practice putting green, along with a number of other course renovations. For reasons unknown, the DeFuniak Country Club was closed in the late 1930s or early 1940s. The exact date of the closure remains unknown. Backed by a number of local golf enthusiasts, the DeFuniak Country Club was reorganized and reopened in 1945. There was a new club president. It was Charles King. Club members implemented fundraising efforts to

build a new clubhouse and rebuild the fairways and greens. The golf course remained a nine-hole layout until 1997. Fast forward to 2019. In April 2019, Walton County purchased the former DeFuniak Springs Country Club and the surrounding property. This 190-acre site included an 18-hole golf course, public swimming pool, and clubhouse. The golf course was renamed the Eagle Springs Golf Course and Recreational Center. According to Public Works Manager Shane Supple, more changes are on the way. “We have put close to $500,000 in this facility to upgrade it with another $1.2 million coming over next few years to pay for a new irrigation system and new greens,” added Supple. Future expansion plans include building fishing docks, walking trails, basketball courts, and tennis courts. Not surprisingly, the Eagle Springs Golf Course is part of the Florida

Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 7

Historic Golf Trail, which features 53 golf courses in the state of Florida – from Key West to Pensacola. “We’re trying to make it a recreational facility where people can come out there to enjoy time with the family and be outdoors,” stated Supple. “It’s safe and not too expensive.” This golf course has some design characteristics which will make it enticing for golfers of all levels. “The fun parts of this golf course are dealing with the many elevation changes and the many different looking holes,” added Supple. The ‘signature hole’ at Eagle Springs is the 12th hole, which is a risk-reward hole with water bordering the left side of this hole – alongside the fairway up to the green. Supple is also quick to note that Eagle Springs has enough open space so that it should be somewhat easy to find your golf ball if it veers off the fairway into the rough. In an effort to increase local participation in golf, all junior golfers age 15 or younger get to play the course for free. There's a Treasure Trove of Golf Waiting at the “Other Pinehurst” There are a number

of iconic golf destinations waiting for traveling golfers across America. Just mention names like Pebble Beach, PGA National, Bandon Dunes or Kiawah Island and watch the transformation of the listener. The eyes glass over, the mind drifts, hands start to form an imaginary interlocking grip. Another destination in that category is Pinehurst. It has been “America’s Home of Golf” ever since legendary architect Donald Ross first set foot on the sandhills of North Carolina and began carving his masterpieces. Pinehurst No. 2 has stood the test of time … and stood the test of championship play. Another U.S. Open championship is scheduled to be played on the No. 2 course in 2024, the fourth time the championship visits Pinehurst. In the meantime, thousands of

Legacy #18 Aerial View golfers visit Pinehurst each year … to play the resort courses, which now total nine … to stay in the grand Carolina Hotel at Pinehurst Resort … to stroll through the charming Village of Pinehurst. That is a unique experience, but it comes with a steep price tag.

For those who reserve that kind of golf experience for a once-in-a-lifetime treat, and still want to enjoy golf in the Sandhills region of North Carolina … there is the “Other Pinehurst.” They might already know about Pine Needles Resort and Country Club, home to another great Donald Rossdesigned course that has hosted a number of high-level events, including a number of U.S. Women’s Opens. And there are a number of other courses in the area. To help sort through all of the choices, here is a trilogy of Pinehurst area courses that will supply a great Sandhills experience … at a fraction of the cost.

Talamore Resort

Talamore #9 46

This is a high-level resort without the premium cost. The golf course at Talamore Resort was designed by Rees Jones. In 2018 it went through a major renovation that has elevated it to the top tier of all courses in the Pinehurst area. “We wanted to make the course a bit more player-friendly,” explains Matt Hauser, general manager at Pinehurst. “We took out a lot of bunkers. Re-routed access to a lot of the greens, so that there no longer were so many cart path-only restrictions and long walks Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 7

Tobacco Road #2 Green from cart path to greens. We renovated the bunkers and improved drainage.” The net result is a course that still has plenty of challenge -- it plays longer than the listed yardage and the new hybrid Bermuda greens combine with a lot of undulation to provide a stern test. But, thanks to the changes, Talamore now provides a playerfriendly golf experience for all. How friendly? Visitors can stay in the very upscale villas alongside the course, walk to the nicely appointed clubhouse that provides an included buffet breakfast for all package guests every morning, or return on a Monday or Thursday night for a complimentary “Pig Pickin” dinner that is always a lot of fun.

Legacy Golf Links The name Nicklaus is the most magical of all in golf – even when it refers to his offspring. Jack Nicklaus II learned the golf course architecture business under his father. He worked on a number of projects that proudly wore the Nicklaus name. When it was time to let the youngster fly on his own, he was given an amazing piece of Pinehurst area property and designed Legacy Golf Links in nearby Aberdeen. Making great use of the lakes on the property, young Jack designed one of the most scenic courses in the area. “The lakes are our main feature and the golf course incorporates so many amazing views,” says Chad DeRusseau, head golf professional at Legacy Golf Links. “Golfers may lose a few balls but they will appreciate the scenery.” The closing stretch of holes at Legacy Golf Links present the supreme test – capped by the infamous 18th hole. This par 4 beast that stretches to 459 yards from the back tees, comes complete with a nerve-wracking Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 7

Talamore #18 second shot over water to a large green. It has been rated among the toughest golf holes in North Carolina. All features of the Legacy Golf Links course benefit from the fact that a major renovation took place in 2011. Foremost on the list of renovation projects was the installation of new greens that still roll fast and true.

Tobacco Road The most unforgettable of the three courses in the “Other Pinehurst” is Tobacco Road. Situated just a few miles north of Pinehurst in Sanford, North Carolina, Tobacco Road is a feast for the eyes. Heralded artist/architect, the late Mike Strantz, designed a golf course that is more like a roller coaster ride, than a walk in the park. Thrills, chills and spills await the golfer at every turn. Opened in 1999, Tobacco Road has endured a bit of criticism as a controversial design – but only from the conservative golf crowd who oppose any diversion from the norm. The vast majority of players who come to this somewhat lunar landscape absolutely love it for its creativity and change of

pace from the typical Pinehurst courses. Before his death at the early age of 50, Strantz commented on his work at Tobacco Road by saying, “I want every hole to exude the spirit of the game.” Mission accomplished. “So many players come here and make the same comments,” says Head Professional Chris Brown, who has worked at the course since the beginning. “They say it is some of the most exciting and fun golf they ever have played.” While Tobacco Road presents quite a challenge, much of it is of the optical variety. There is a lot of deception behind the design of the course. Those tricks are reflected in a rating/slope of 71.7/144 from the 6,400 yard tees and 70.3/135 from the 6,200 yard tees. But, for those who can think their way around this layout, there also are a lot of birdie holes. Maybe the best line to apply to Tobacco Road comes from the old Wide World of Sports television show – the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. In any case, the only thing you can’t find at Tobacco Road is boredom. Prepare to be exhilarated.

freddy's fairway thoughts

By Fred Seely

Here and there around our world: Pros in pro-ams PGA Tour pros also are club members and many act that way: they participate in club activities. Used to be that they weren't allowed in club tournaments but common sense and the handicap system changed that. Case in point: Jim Furyk played in a one-day Four Ball at his club with 80 percent handicap. He was a plus 6. Finished second, though we hear his partner did most of the damage. A pantsful Guy hit an Edwin Watts shop in our town and snuck out with four Scotty Cameron putters. The video showed him walking out, stiffly. Yes, he certainly was walking stiffly as he had jammed the putters down his pants legs. Jumped in a waiting car and hasn't been caught yet. Fun reading Kopplin, Kuebler and Wallace is among the top executive search firms that deal in country clubs and they include vacancies on their website. Check and see if you club is there. It's kopplinandkuebler. com. Hot teacher Others get more publicity but teacher Todd Anderson has a bigtime following at his PGA Tour Performance Center adjacent to the range at the TPC Sawgrass. The latest is Lanto Griffin, a mid-pack rabbit who blossomed when he invested in Anderson and last month won the Houston Open. Embarrassment The Houston Open didn't have a real sponsor and was kept alive by some locals who felt the city should have PGA Tour golf. Then came bad luck: the tournament coincided with the Houston Astros getting into the major league playoff and a better-than-average Houston Texans football team, and attendance was lousy. Making it worse was a no-name field. Expectations of a pro A local private club is changing pros and asked for 10 ideas on what they should expect from the new person. I gave him these expectations: • A weekly free clinic for beginners or those who rarely play. The PGA of America talks the “Grow the Game” talk but doesn't seem to walk it. Your pro needs to bring more players to the course. • At least one trip daily along the range to greet players and, if appropriate, provide a few tips. • Ride the course at least once a day. • If the club is paying the pro's entry in local Chapter pro-ams, take club members as the amateurs. • If there are organized groups within the club (senior men, ladies, etc.), play with them at least once a month. • Even though the pro probably is the face of the club, expect a person who won't think he or she gets to do things his way all the time. • Expect he or she to have a track record that you like. That means you have to do the checking. Call members of the present club, or past clubs. • Appreciation. Head pro jobs are getting harder to find. • A solid family life. The golf pro's job might be the most difficult in the club. The good ones work way too many hours for most spouses. • And maybe the No. 1 expectation: a smile and a hello. All. The. Time.

CDB gum It may not be marijuana but it's being used by Tour players — notably Woods and Mickelson — and the Tour is worried about the image, not to mention what else the boys might be chewing. Thanks to Joe Joe Barrow did a lot — more than you think — to promote The First Tee nationally and he's now retired, but his pals are putting together a big day for him on Dec. 2 at his home club in Jacksonville. Golf and dinner, and celebs include ex-Commissioner Tim Finchem and some Tour players. You're welcome to join the fun and The First Tee office in St. Augustine has info. New way to lose The 54-hole St. Augustine Amateur draws a very good field and includes a Mid-Am division, which this year came down to two Jacksonville players on the final hole. On the tee, Duke Butler IV led by three over Kirk Irvin and both drove into the fairway, but Butler was paying attention to the Jacksonville Jaguars game on his iPhone and thought his lead was two. Irvin then holed out from the fairway for eagle and Butler, thinking he now needed birdie for the win and a par for a tie — when a par would have won it — went for the win, buried his shot into a greenside bunker and made 6. Travel About this time, your thoughts turn to an overseas summer golf trip. Those same thoughts need to be sprinkled with a lot of caution. The travel business got overcrowded in recent years and there were some disasters. Around 20 airlines have gone bust so far in 2019 and the worst of all is the bankruptcy of Thomas Cook, certainly the best-known name in the travel business. When a travel company goes under, there rarely is a warning. When Cook suddenly closed, literally hundreds of thousands of people were stranded because the airplanes were grounded. So, some suggestions: • Use a reputable company. Yes, if a big operator like Cook can get cooked, it's hard to tell, but do as much research as you can. Your travel agent should have an idea. • Use a credit card. If the bottom falls out, you need proof of payment. • Go with friends. Ideally, you would go with a group from your club with common interests. Meeting new friends may sound spiffy until you find out they a) oversleep, b) try and stick you with the bar tab or c) cheat. • If possible, make your own airline arrangements. Some group travel requires you to use their chosen airlines (they get a cut, of course.) You're better off going on your own schedule. • It's not a bad idea to go with your pro. The PGA of America has its own travel division and can arrange good tee times, and many pros put together a package. • Get insurance. Travel insurance isn't expensive, though you need to make sure you're dealing with a reputable firm like Travelex that won't disappear in bad times. More to come Yes, Asians are slowly taking over ladies golf and the future is theirs. Please don't read anything into this other than it being the facts: the best high school girls golf team in Florida — by a wide margin — is at The First Academy in Orlando, where the last names of the starting five are Ma, Tang, Zhuang, Yu and Zeng. Asian men are a bit behind internationally but maybe not for long. First Academy's boys team is almost as good as the girls in competition. Names are Balaji, Zheng, Gudao and Huang.

Rod Perry Claims His Sixth Section Championship Let’s call it “The Fantastic Finish”! As our tournament season concludes with our Section Championship it came down to number one vs number two! Matt Borchert, Isleworth came on site with a slim lead in our Player of the Year points race which Rod Perry, Crane Lakes Golf & CC has won the last ten years straight! As if that wasn’t enough excitement our championship concluded with a playoff for the title between Rod and Matt! Rod Perry won the Section Championship presented by BKS in the playoff, but Matt Borchert held on to the Player of the Year title by a narrow margin! Rod’s win gets him an exemption into the Arnold Palmer Invitational while Matt will get an exemption into the Valspar Championship. We also congratulate Susan Bond-Philo, PGA Magazine, for her victory in our Women’s Championship. Susan held off Jennifer Borocz to claim the title. It was a special venue hosted by Golden Ocala Golf & Equestrian Club. Thank you to Ryan Gray for hosting his fellow professionMatt Borchert

als along with the entire Golden Ocala team for their attention to detail and exceptional service. Simply a fabulous facility! As always, thank you to all of presenting and supporting partners for their investment and support of our PGA Professionals. Prior to our Section Championship, 52

Rod Perry our players had a little Pro-Scratch warm-up with their amateur friends at the prestigious Ritz Carlton Members Club in Sarasota. Greg Koch, Ritz Carlton Orlando and his partner Logan Blondell fired 62 to claim the title by two shots over Gary Koch, NBC Sports and his partner Daniel DeBra. The Ritz was in fantastic shape and it was a special treat for the amateurs to compete with their professional friends. Thank you to our host, Mark Rummings for the privilege and top shelf venue as expected when you hang out at The Ritz. The Section Championship concludes our Player of the Year Races and we’re proud to announce our Player of the Year, Matt Borchert, Isleworth and our Senior Player of the Year, Clint Avret, Timuquana CC. Clint is also our Section Tournament Chairman and it was great to see him playing at a high level throughout the season. Matt knocked Rod Perry off the mountain after his 10-year reign. Now that the Player of the Year

Races are over, we’re proud to announce our 2019 Challenge Cup Teams who will battle South Florida in our annual challenge. Congratulations to Matt Borchert, Rod Perry, Greg Koch, Jon Mansfield, David Hronek, Christian Bartolacci, David Damesworth, Bob Wallace, Nick Frontero, Jason Hrynkiw, John Falcone and Barry Cheesman for making our Cup Team. Congratulations to our Senior Cup Team members Clint Avret, Nick Frontero, Terence Woodard, Neil Jones, Jim Slattery, Keith Kulzer, Chris Souchak, Artie Wilson, John Falcone, Mike Keymont, Freddy Gibson and Bob Dickson. These Cup Matches are highly competitive and there is always a lot of pride at stake, well except for the seniors who just plain have fun! The players from both sides always look forward to a couple days of camaraderie and competition. North Florida will host the matches at The Concession while South Florida will host the seniors at Harbour Ridge Yacht and CC. Good times! Golf Central • Volume 20, Issue 7

The Other St Andrews – St Andrews By-The-Sea, New Brunswick, Canada

The Kennedy Inn is Canada’s oldest seaside accommodation complete with an English-style pub.

The US looks close enough to touch from the 16th infinity green.

Anyone that knows me knows I consider my second home to be St Andrews, Scotland. But there is another St Andrews, equally as charming with a storied history of golf less than an hour’s drive of the Maine border in New Brunswick, Canada. St Andrews by-the-Sea is home to the historic and iconic Algonquin Hotel and the Algonquin Golf Club and is known as Canada’s first true seaside resort town. While initially settled by hard-working seafaring Scots, Irish and English it garnered an international reputation in the late 1800s and early 20th century 54

SunnilandSUPERSpotlight: Kevin Fipps

This whole racket started for me back in the 80’s, growing up in Conyers, Georgia. Playing golf from an early age, I was always fascinated by the “happenings” on the course. Why for the “life of me” couldn’t the greens-mower get out of my way so I could hit my second shot at 6:45 am? Or, the wonderful smell of hamburgers grilling on a cool crisp fall evening as we were trying to finish 9-holes before dark. These fascinations led me to a college degree and then to a wonderful life in the turf business. With stops in Atlanta, South Georgia, Charleston, HHI, and eventually Central and South Florida, I have forged friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. I am currently the General Manager/Director of Agronomy at Jacaranda Golf Club located in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and have worked here for the past 12 years. Owned and Operated by Scratch Golf Co. since 1989, Jacaranda is a 36 hole semi-private facility. Over the past 12 years, Sunniland has been used in one way or another at Jacaranda. The product as well as the service are always top shelf and prices are always affordable. Sunniland is always “part of the conversation” at Jacaranda when it comes to fertilizer. 60

Keeper of the Turf Growing up in Oregon,

golf was a seasonal sport. I was taught to play golf at the young age of six and played it as my main sport until the competitiveness took the fun out of the game during high school golf. Oddly enough, I got my first guitar the same year that I stopped golfing for sport. Not knowing how to play guitar, I enlisted the help of a friend who would teach me some of the basics; like how to read tabs that show you how to play songs. Being that I was self-taught, I picked up a lot of bad habits and my understanding of the guitar is limited. However, it was something I enjoyed doing for a good chunk of the day. I found myself learning a lot of other peoples’ songs that I was drawn to at the time: Tenacious D, Jason Mraz, and Jack Johnson. Over time, I found that I could make my own songs by using a little bit of what I learned from each artist and adding my own personality and lyrics. Shortly after a near death motorcycle accident and marrying my beautiful wife, Crystal, we made a big move to the island of Hawaii. Soon after we arrived, I started working in the golf course industry. I’d later learn it was my passion and made it into a career. I started as a temp at Kukio Golf and

Beach Club with absolutely no knowledge of golf course maintenance and I quickly found out that this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Everything about it amazed me: the teamwork and coordination it took to overcome the daily challenges of shot62

gun starts, the member guests, and of course there is mother nature herself. It felt like I was part of a well-oiled machine, part of something bigger than myself. Almost five years later I have grown with the company and I am now one of three Foremen for Golf Course Mainte-

nance at Kukio. I am the proud father of a beautiful two-year-old girl and this Spring I will have completed my degree in Turf Science at Penn State. Their online courses have allowed me to be able to work and go to school full time at home in Hawaii where this type of study is not offered. The last five years that I have experienced in this field have given me insight as to how hard it is to keep optimal playing conditions and I feel that people playing the course do not fully understand what it takes to keep their greens true and fast. This inspired me to write the song, “Keepers of the Turf.” I felt it was important to showcase the greenskeepers whom inspired me to write the song in the first place, visually displaying the hard work that they do day in and day out. While the song is fun for anyone in the industry to watch, I do hope that the men and woman who play the game also watch and listen to it so that they may have a better understanding and appreciation of what goes into keeping their favorite golf course green and pristine.

United Airlines and Audubon International team up to Save Raptors in San Francisco United Airlines strengthened its emerging reputation as the world’s most environmentally conscious airline by announcing this spring that the carrier is again teaming up with Audubon International to expand the successful Raptor Relocation Network to its premier West Coast hub, San Francisco International Airport. Through the program wildlife biologists will trap raptors – primarily barn owls – residing near the airport and resettle these birds of prey at suitable golf course habitats where the species are more likely to thrive. United’s expansion of the Raptor Relocation Network follows the airline’s recent announcement in San Francisco that the company has committed to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2050. United’s pledge to reduce emissions by 50% relative to 2005 represents the equivalent of removing 4.5 million vehicles from the road, or the total number of cars in New

footprint; it means convening different groups to develop new and innovative ways to actively protect vulnerable species that otherwise may face increased risks due to our collective impact on their habitat,” said Janet Lamkin, United’s president of California. “As we continue our commitment to protect raptors in the New York area, we are excited to expand our efforts to San Francisco and further underscore our industry-leading efforts to operate sustainably and responsibly.” “Audubon International is excited to be working with United Airlines’ Eco-Skies program to expand the Raptor Relocation Network to the West Coast,” said Christine Kane, Audubon International’s chief executive officer. “Thousands of golf courses across the world have adopted environmentally sustainable property management practices that support wildlife habitat through our Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program. Bringing this all together to provide safe, high-quality habitat for raptors is a great success.” All raptors relocated as part of this program are fitted with United States Geological Survey (USGS) bands. Citizen scientists designated by each release site monitor and record sightings after each relocation to provide data on the postrelease movement of the birds and to help identify preferred relocation areas. As part of a pilot study this fall involving Audubon International’s Raptor Relocation Network and The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, 8 American kestrels will be outfitted
