In conjunction with the South Florida PGA Foundation and the 10 All In Foundation, Glades Central High School boys and girls golf teams took a trip to The Honda Classic to experience the Wednesday Pro-Am. At this time last year, many students at Glades Central High School had very little access to the game, lacking facilities to practice and golf clubs to use. However, the South Florida PGA Foundation and its partnership with the 10 ALL IN Foundation helped to change that last summer. Through its partnership, the South Florida PGA Foundation and the 10 ALL IN Foundation created a camp to bring golf and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) to youth in Belle Glade last July. With the help of 10 All In Founder, SuperBowl MVP and Glades Central High School alumni Santonio Holmes, the school now has two golf teams and recently finished their first season. Today, the boys and girls golf teams, including coaches, had the unique opportunity to experience a PGA Tour environment and all the amenities that come along with a high level professional golf event. “Going to this event is great exposure, but it has also opened our players’ world, ‘’ said Felicia Patrick, Girls Golf Coach at Glades Central High School. “Golf was never part of their world and now it is because of these experiences.” The group watched Rickie Fowler practice on the driving range with his coach and Henrick Stenson’ pre-round putting routine, that included a special aid every student wanted to know the purpose of, before heading out to the course. The highlight of the day was when the group was invited onto the 17th hole to take a picture on the tee box, catching a glimpse of what the pros get to do. “Today was a great experience, showing us new things about golf and a lot of things that I didn’t really know, ‘’ said one student. “It really showed that I can actually do something in golf.” The day ended with special conversations with Santonio Holmes, Ken Kennerly, executive director of the Honda Classic and Geoff Lostead, executive director of the South Florida PGA. The three discussed the benefits of being involved in golf and all opportunities that are available to make connections and further improve your network. Golf Central • Volume 22, Issue 11
