Director’s foreword

DEAR FRIENDS OF THE OSKAR VON MILLER FORUM, I am very glad to present our latest yearbook 2018/19 to you. We are looking back on another exciting and interesting year in which we h osted more than 50 events. In keeping with our educational mission and pro gramme mandate to promote excellence in building, our varied public lec ture programme was enhanced by numerous in-house events and work shops for our scholarship holders residing at the Oskar von Miller Forum. All topics and subjects complement the curriculum of the civil engineer ing departments at the Technical University of Munich and the College of Construction Engineering (Städtische Fachschule für Bautechnik). The public lectures addressed key topics such as sustainability, climate change, resource conservation and social responsibility, and dealt with innovations in civil engineering, building with renewable materials and approaches pursued in materials research. A particular highlight was the “Building Systems of Angelo Mangiarotti” exhibition at the Oskar von Miller Forum at the end of the summer semes ter 2019, dedicated to the works of architect and designer Angelo Man giarotti (1921–2012). In his opening address, architect Prof. Dr. Thomas Herzog, EoE of the Technical University of Munich, gave an account of system-based building spanning the period from classical modernity to the present. The lecture series was opened by Lars T. Thorbek from the Ramboll Group with a look at the past, present and future of bridge building, presenting the spectacular cable-stayed bridge Queensferry Crossing near Edinburgh as an example of innovativeness. Architect Achim Menges discussed the

interfaces between biology and digital building in his lecture. Climate re searcher Stefan Rahmstorf portrayed the diverse causes of climate change and pinpointed potential solutions. At the close of the winter se mester, Maarten Hajer, Professor of Urban Futures at Utrecht University, discussed the potential of positive imaginations for a sustainable future. Landscape architects and architects Anuradha Mathur and Dilip da Cunha presented novel possibilities of designing the built environment by explor ing the boundaries between land and water. Klaus M. Leisinger, founder and president of the foundation Global Values Alliance (Globale Werte Allianz), postulated corporate social responsibility for sustainable devel opment. Concluding the lecture series, Anna Heringer, architect and hon orary professor of the UNESCO chair of Earthen Architecture, Building Cultures and Sustainable Development, pointed out that architecture is a tool to improve lives. I hope you enjoy reading our latest yearbook and look forward to seeing you again in the upcoming year.

Programme Advisory Council’s foreword

FROM THE PROGRAMME A DVISORY COUNCIL The Oskar von Miller Forum was founded by the labour agreement part ners in the Bavarian construction industry with the aim of providing stu dents enrolled in construction programmes at the Technical University of Munich and students of the College of Construction Engineering (Städtische Fachschule für Bautechnik) with the opportunity of interdisciplinary train ing. In addition, the foundation Stiftung Bayerisches Baugewerbe provides support through a programme scholarship to help students develop the skills they need to meet their future career challenges. Any built structure, be it a street, kindergarten, school, factory or residen tial building, is the result of the work of many. To merge the individual elements into an overall concept, everyone involved has to engage in inter disciplinary cooperation. For this reason, the residents living and studying at the Oskar von Miller Forum include not only future civil and environmental engineers and architects, but also construction technicians. They develop projects and receive inspiration for their careers by partaking in an intercultural and interdisciplinary exchange. In our digitalized world, we continue to be faced with the need to com municate in traditional ways to help us join forces and achieve excellent results.

Social skills are a basic requirement for this. Therefore, scholarship hold ers can attend personality development seminars to prepare the ground for their future success in industry, research and teaching or in the im plementation of construction projects. The constellation of living together as students may lead to conflicts. Learning how to deal with such conflict situations is an essential asset for one’s future career. Seminars in this field are also part of the Oskar von Miller Forum’s programme. The Programme Advisory Council develops the agenda for the public event programme together with the team of the Oskar von Miller Forum. Speak ers from various disciplines such as architecture, civil engineering, ethics, ecology or design and materials research hold lectures that provide the students with significant academic inspiration. Polymaths such as Leonardo da Vinci are the exception, but a joint effort can also lead to excellence. This is the message we want to share with our students. If we succeed in this, the idea that originally led to the estab lishment of the Oskar von Miller Forum will have been well implemented.

Programme mandate The programme of the Oskar von Miller Forum is dedicated to the education of engineers in the field of construction at the Technical University of Munich. With an interdisciplinary and international orientation, it supports scholarship holders in their pursuit of excellence in both their own field of specialisation and in related disciplines. The programme is directly related to the university education of building professionals. Linking to the traditional concept of the ‘master builder’ who possessed combined skills in all branches of building, the programme establishes connections and links between construction engineering, environmental engineering and surveying, between architecture and the artisan trades as well as social sciences, humanities, economics and natural sciences.

Programme elements INSPIRATION – INTERDISCIPLINARY AND I NTERCULTURAL The programme of the Oskar von Miller Forum consists of three main components. One of these components is guest scientists who, as scientists in resi dence, share their know-how and experience and are available as mentors for the scholarship holders. They contribute to and enrich the programme as well as day-to-day life at the Oskar von Miller Forum both from a professional and an intercultural point of view. The second component is the public programme of events that provides inspiration for the students’ professional development. Internationally renowned experts hold sophisticated lectures on topics in construction engineering and related fields. The third component is the intercultural and interdisciplinary exchange between the scholarship holders, which is nurtured by living and work ing together. For example, in tandem presentations, they share insights into their stud ies or their research projects. A number of additional in-house activities

are organised by the scholarship holders on their own initiative. They furthermore enhance their social skills by taking part in personal de velopment seminars.

EXCELLENCE The Oskar von Miller Forum offers future civil and environmental engi neers, architects and construction technicians temporary accommoda tion and contributes excellent ideas and inspiration to their education through its programme. In dialogue with guest scientists from across the globe, scholarship holders enhance and extend their interests and are thus prepared for working life with tasks spanning different disciplines. It is in this way that the Oskar von Miller Forum fosters their pursuit of

INHOUSE EVENTS Workshops Excellent scientists are invited as mentors for the scholarship holders in the framework of the Scientists-in-Residence programme. They share their expertise with the scholarship holders in workshops and other events. In addition, the scientists take an active part in the in-house programme and day-to-day life at the Oskar von Miller Forum.

Workshop talks and alumni evening The workshop talks are a source of inspiration for scholarship holders to plan their future careers. Entrepreneurs explain how to start up a com pany and provide insight into their everyday work. During the Alumni Net working Event, scholarship students receive helpful advice from former residents for starting their career and begin building important networks for their professional life.

Tandem presentations All scholarship students present essential aspects of their work or projects in the form of tandem presentations. In this way, residents engage in an interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge and experience. In addition, by or ganising the work on their own, they define their own priorities and deve lop their personal strengths beyond their particular field of specialisation.

QUEENSFERRY CROSSING – I NNOVATION IN ENGINEERING › Lars T. Thorbek

The lecture portrayed innovations in bridge design with a focus on the Queensferry Crossing, a spectacular cable-stayed bridge across the Firth of Forth estuary. Lars T. Thorbek first looked back on the history of bridge building and then to the future. Are civil engineers truly innova tive or are they just making minor adjustments to the fundamentals of bridge design? The lecture gave exciting insights into how bridges were built in the past and how bridge design has developed over time. The spotlight was on the Queensferry Crossing, which was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 4 September 2017. Spanning an overall length of 2.64 km, the bridge features a 2.10 km cable-stayed system with two main spans of 650 m each. The central tower is stabilized by cable fans that overlap at the centres of the main spans. This is a solu tion that is unique for a bridge of this scale. The Queensferry Crossing has in fact broken records. In September 2016, the two balanced cantile vers on each side of the central tower reached a total length of 644 m. This was a world record listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.

RETHINKING ARCHITECTURE ›  Achim Menges

ELYTRA-FILAMENT-PAVILLON Vitra Design Museum  |  Weil am Rhein

A look at nature helps architects rethink building. Biology offers us a virtually inexhaustible supply of formal, functional and process princi ples. Many of them challenge established approaches pursued in con struction technology in surprising ways or in fact demonstrate entirely different possibilities. In his lecture, Achim Menges will explain how a bionic approach in archi tecture enables scientific, cross-disciplinary lateral thinking. Presenting a number of selected projects, he will also illustrate how this can lead to architecture that is effective and explorative, efficient and expressive.

THE CLIMATE CRISIS – CAUSES, C ONSEQUENCES, POTENTIAL S OLUTIONS ›  Stefan Rahmstorf

Forest fires, floods, landslides, drought – 2018 cast a renewed spotlight on climate change. This doesn’t come as a surprise to climate research ers such as Stefan Rahmstorf, given the increasing rate of extreme weather events that have been observed for decades. In his lecture, he discussed the causes of the climate crisis and presented the latest data on global warming. The climate researcher also appealed to the architects and designers to contribute their part to reducing emissions. Given that heating demand causes 15 % of greenhouse gas emissions in Germany alone, one possibil ity would be to further promote the construction of energy-plus buildings.

K ey n ote lectures

L EC T URE S

A further recommendation on how architecture could contribute to re ducing CO 2 emissions was to replace concrete by timber structures. Since wood is a carbon reservoir, the cultivation of wood plantations and wooden buildings can actively remove CO 2 from the atmosphere. The production of cement alone accounts for 4 % of global fossil emissions, so concrete construction should be restricted as far as possible.

Imagining Urban Futures MAARTEN HAJER U RBAN FUTURES STUDIO  |  UTRECHT UNIVERSITY

Maarten A. Hajer is distinguished professor of Urban Futures and Director of the Urban Futures Studio at Utrecht University. He is also the Scientific Director of the university-wide strategic theme ‘Sustainability’ and the lead author of its new programme, ‘Pathways to Sustainability’. The Urban Futures Studio is devoted to the study of positive urban futures and of ways to get there. It investigates what it calls ‘Tech niques of Futuring’. It is a transdisciplinary institute that conducts empirical research on existing practices, but also helps to initiate experiments.

IMAGINING URBAN FUTURES ›  Maarten Hajer

Urban planner and political scientist Maarten Hajer founded the Urban Futures Studio to investigate why it is so difficult to conceive of new possible urban worlds. Using concepts such as ‘imaginary’ and ‘tech nique of futuring’ he aims to help regain the capacity to imagine alter native possible urban worlds. Climate change is a phenomenon that requires us to rethink existing sociogeographical arrangements. Maarten Hajer argued that the transition to ‘post-fossil urbanization’ is hampered by the lack of positive imaginations of alternative possible urban futures and post-fossil city life.

The Urban Futures Studio believes that new thinking begins at crossover points between distinct disciplines and in coalitions between new and old drivers of change. In his lecture, Maarten Hajer also explained the Studio’s endeavour to redefine the role of university in the education of urban planners.

DESIGN WITH WETNESS ›  Anuradha Mathur ›  Dilip da Cunha

Why do we differentiate between land and water? This question was the starting point of the lecture held by the two landscape architects Anuradha Mathur and Dilip da Cunha. It is also the guiding principle in their entire practice of design and in the projects they implement around the world. The lecture dealt with their current project, Ocean of Rain, which builds on the latest book by Dilip da Cunha, The Invention of Rivers (2019), in which he describes rivers as the result of a design practice that has cul tivated land-centric concepts and infrastructures with a line separating water from land. Today, with the increasing frequency of floods and rising sea levels, the line of separation has come into sharp focus with pro posals for walls, levees, natural protective measures and land retention schemes. In addition, Anuradha Mathur and Dilip da Cunha highlighted the landcentric concepts and infrastructures of the current land development practice that have led to a subjugation of the element of water. The two speakers ventured thinking along new lines, discussing how the increasing future presence of water can build the foundation for novel forms of sustainable design in landscape planning.

SOCIETY – CORPORATIONS – R ESPONSIBILITY ›  Klaus M. Leisinger

Only about half of all people trust corporations and their leaders to live up to their responsibility and “do the right thing.” According to Klaus M. Leisinger, it is urgent that corporations take on a leading role in times of sustainability debates and fundamental social changes. This is the only way to tackle the social changes we are facing for the common good. The challenges of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, digitalisa tion and intensifying competition with players from emerging markets such as China cannot be addressed by doing business as usual. Given that complex problems cannot be solved by individual parties, there is a growing need for new forms of cooperation between business and society, as Klaus M. Leisinger pointed out. His work focuses on issues such as a contribution by industry to the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Develop ment, transcultural understanding and corporate responsibility.

BEAUTY = SUSTAINABILITY ›  Anna Heringer

MEHTI SCHOOL (MODERN EDUCATION AND TRAINING INSTITUTE) Rudrapur, Bangladesh

For Anna Heringer, architecture is a tool to improve lives. This was the opening statement of her inspiring lecture. The architect and honorary professor of the UNESCO chair of Earthen Architecture, Building Cultures and Sustainable Development discussed the use of natural building materials. The production process is at least as important to Anna Heringer as the completed building. Consequently, the focus of her presentation was not only on her clay buildings in Asia, Africa and Europe but also on the people making it possible through their acceptance and input.

Anna Heringer describes her work as follows: “The vision behind and mo tivation for my work is to explore and use architecture as a medium to strengthen cultural and individual confidence, to support local economies and to foster the ecological balance. For me, sustainability is a synonym for beauty: a building that is harmonious in its design, structure, tech nique and use of materials, as well as with the location, the environment, the user, the socio-cultural context. This, for me, is what defines its sus tainable and aesthetic value.”

The fascinating view of the earth from outer space will help fill knowl edge gaps about urban transformation processes. This is the message that Hannes Taubenböck delivered to his audience. The analysis of satellite data is a tool assisting the staff of the German Aerospace Center (DLR ) in documenting escalating urban growth in a global comparison. New metropolises emerge almost every day on our earth and existing cities are merging to form megacities with more than 80 million inhabitants. Open spaces that remain are seized by sprawl ing slums. Big Earth Data helps pinpoint areas of urban poverty and can also be used in other fields of research as a basis to develop solutions.

Sufficiency is a broad principle for social organisations with the potential to steer institutions and organisations – and maybe even the entire econ omy – away from continuous growth and the excessive costs of the fossil fuel regime. It holds the promise of a good life not just here and now, but into the distant future. Thomas Princen addressed this concept in his lecture “Sufficiency: A Behavior, a Practice, a Principle.” The lecture was organised in collaboration between the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society (LMU), the Chair of Environmental and Climate Policy, the Chair of Energy Efficient and Sustainable Design and Building and the Oskar von Miller Forum.

Building Systems of Angelo Mangiarotti ARCHITECTURE IN THE WAKE OF BAUHAUS The Oskar von Miller Forum devoted an exhibition to architect and de signer Angelo Mangiarotti (1921–2012), acknowledged as a pioneer in the industrial production of reinforced concrete building systems, staged from 5 June to 10 July 2019. In the light of the necessity to create large-scale new residential housing, the work of this exceptional architect is of particular topicality. Systembased building has continued to gain importance in recent years due to weather-independent, prefabricated and largely cost-effective production.

Angelo Mangiarotti was awarded an honorary doctorate twenty years ago by the Technical University of Munich at the request of the Department of Architecture and his work was honoured in an exhibition presenting his building systems. The exhibition at the Oskar von Miller Forum was con ceived on this basis. At the opening of the exhibition on June 4 at 6:30 p.m., Professor Thomas Herzog, Emeritus of Excellence of the Technical University of Munich, gave a presentation entitled “Die Bausysteme von Angelo Mangiarotti – Meister der Technologie und Ästhetik des Bauens” (The building systems of Angelo Mangiarotti – master of technology and aesthetics of building). A USSTELLUNG Thomas Herzog mit Studierenden

According to Thomas Herzog, Angelo Mangiarotti created architecture of high artistic merit combined with functions whose design is not primar ily influenced by the representation or symbolism of institutions as mer cantile branding. He developed inspiring, beautiful building systems, for instance for production halls, which are today mostly built without any claims of design quality as they are merely “functional” buildings. But they are, after all, places that play a major role in the daily work lives of millions of people.

B uildi n g S ystems of A n gelo M a n giarotti

E X HIBI T ION

The buildings designed by Angelo Mangiarotti are largely made of con crete, a freely malleable material without a fixed morphological struc ture. They are aesthetically compelling in terms of their immediate archi tectural diction. The classical structural components (such as columns, girders, roofs, ceilings and walls) find expression with regard to their respective function, their provenance as industrially produced parts and as a form of architectural sophistication. He not only found compelling technical and functional solutions for con struction tasks, but also demonstrated his great artistic potential as an architect by lending high sculptural quality to the structural systems. His philosophy that any separation between the architect as an artist and the civil engineer as a technician is ill-advised for future building endeav ours is demonstrated by many of the presented projects. Angelo Mangia rotti generally advocated high technical excellence in the architectural profession, nurtured by studying the material properties and making pro ficient use of the potential offered by building technology. The works of Mangiarotti were mainly built in northern Italy in the 1960s and 1970s, and include factory buildings, residential buildings, office buildings, a church and exhibition pavilions, which today continue to be considered groundbreaking examples of complex systems with remark able creative power in architecture. The exhibition at the Oskar von Miller Forum included numerous display boards with photos, drawings and detailed sketches of the projects, as well as information on the life and work of Angelo Mangiarotti.

Topics such as digitalization in the construction industry and the changes this brings for the collaboration between building contractors and architects or civil engineers, as well as potential time savings through industrial prefabrication despite increased planning complexities, were discussed in detail. Further discussion topics included application of production lines, sub mission planning, standards and quality management as well as lean management in general. The event was prepared and hosted by the construction technicians living at the Forum.

Seminars L EADERSHIP SEMINARS FOR PERSONAL D EVELOPMENT TRAINING Leadership seminars are specifically designed by an experienced business coach to meet the needs of architecture and engineering students. They are implemented as two-day seminars and cover topics preparing them for their role as future leaders in business, teaching or research. The seminar “Working with others in a team, managing different interests and cultures” took place in November 2018 and addressed values in deal ing with other people and cultures. A particular focus was on making conscious use of one’s own skills in a team as well as on effective work ing methods. In the “Presentation skills” seminar held in January 2019, the scholarship holders practiced classic presentations of projects or subjects. This in cluded both successful presentation techniques and discussion skills for dealing with clients, as well as chairing an entire project. In May 2019, the seminar “Leading myself in the working world” prepared participants for job interviews. In addition, they learned how to success fully handle typical situations at work, such as performance reviews with superiors.

Welcome excursion MEET & GREET AND INTEGRATION MOUNTAIN HIKING IN BAVARIA At the beginning of the winter semester, all scholarship holders, guest scientists and the team of the Oskar von Miller Forum went on an excur sion together. The group first travelled to Garmisch-Partenkirchen by train, from where it took the cable car to the Alpspitze in the Wetterstein Alps. Towering 2628 metres above sea level, it is only 334 metres lower than Germany’s highest peak, Zugspitze, and features an impressive pyramid-shaped north face. Visitors with strong nerves can venture out on the AlpspiX plat form at an elevation of 2080 metres. The sunny weather conditions of fered the scholarship holders spectacular views of the Höllental valley and the Zugspitze. From there, the group hiked to the Kreuzeckhaus. While most of the scholarship students decided to hike back down to the valley, a small group descended with the Kreuzeck cable car and walked back to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. All participants reunited at the traditional inn Zur Schranne where the excursion was concluded in a relaxed setting.

Life at the Forum C ULTURAL EXCHANGE, PARTIES AND GET-TOGETHERS Summer party With a film themed “Back to the roots,” the scholarship holders created an entertaining cinematic monument honouring Oskar von Miller, the name giver of the Forum. In addition, all residents and alumni were in vited to arrange their portraits at the various levels of an artfully de signed family tree. This way, the large number of alumni in attendance quickly became part of the event. Another item on the agenda was presentations by the scholarship holders about various group projects implemented at the Forum in the past year. For instance, one group had built a bar out of wood, another had initiated a project to reduce waste. In addition, the Oskar von Miller Band with its choir and lead singers provided a captivating musical setting.

Christmas party The joint Christmas party gave all residents, guest scientists and the team of the Oskar von Miller Forum the opportunity to look back on the year. The scholarship holders put together a charming programme with music and a Secret Santa gift exchange.

Concert In keeping with its interdisciplinary and intercultural approach, the Oskar von Miller Forum fosters the cultural and social skills of the scholarship students. Concerts featuring young artists help build bridges between ar chitecture and music. On 16 October, Chiara Martina Rubino (piano), Lisanne Traub (bassoon) and Jakob Plag (clarinet) gave an impressive performance, supported by the association Freunde junger Musiker

Universal Design Exhibition MCBW Munich During the international Munich Creative Business Week (MCBW ), the topic of Univer sal Design was presented for the eighth time to the professional public of architects and designers at a daily opened exhibition at the Oskar von Miller Forum.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN is a concept and design strategy created by the Amer ican architect Ron Mace, a Fellow of the American Institute for Architects, in the 1990s. Mace and his team developed seven principles to be applied when developing architectures, products and services to accommodate the needs of the broadest possible user group range. With the support of the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy as well as “bayern design”, outstanding ex amples of Universal Design have been presented in a juried exhibition at the Oskar von Miller Forum during the leading German design week, the Munich Creative Business Week, in the past seven years. Experts and users assess the entries and select the winners. The partnership with the Oskar von Miller Forum provides an ideal setting for daily lectures and workshops to complement the exhibitions. Thanks to this interaction, Universal Design has developed into a central and inter nationally acknowledged barometer of the vision of architect Ron Mace.

Gemeinnützige Urlaubskasse des Bayerischen Baugewerbes e. V. For over 60 years, the procedure applied in the construction industry to fund leave pay has ensured that claims to leave and remuneration can be saved for manual workers so that they can take a continuous period of leave. The Urlaubskasse (leave pay funds) maintains an employee account for each manual worker in the construction industry in Bavaria and reimburses leave pay paid by employers.
