Director’s foreword

DEAR FRIENDS OF THE OSKAR VON MILLER FORUM, Meeting global challenges such as climate change and environmental degradation, competition for resources and demographic change are some of the central questions of our time. The construction sector plays an important role when it comes to reducing CO₂ emissions, adapting to climate change, reducing resource depletion and adapting the built envi ronment to rapidly changing economic and social circumstances. For this reason, this past year we once more devoted our work to these complex issues in an effort to bring about a better understanding of the challenges and outline possible solutions. Ken Yeang, a pioneer and visionary of sustainable architecture who draws on 40 years of experience in green building, provided valuable inspiration in this regard. Building environmental engineer Patrick Bellew, founder of Atelier Ten, gave insight into the development of holistic concepts for environmentally sound buildings. Economics expert Claudia Kemfert explored the immense business oppor tunities behind a smart energy transition. Economist and mathematician Franz-Josef Radermacher outlined future scenarios and advocated a balanced world based on an eco-social market economy. However, apart from critical environmental challenges, there are also sociocultural, constructional and technological issues that need to be considered to secure a sustainable future. For instance, the exhibition Die fünfte Ansicht (The Fifth View) presented masterly roof structures from antiquity to the present, impressively documenting innovativeness

as well as technical and design excellence delivered by architects and engineers over the centuries. Knut Göppert, engineer in structural design from sbp schlaich bergermann partner, and Patrick Lüth, architect from Snøhetta, gave inspiring talks about roofs with a focus on new technolo gies, materials and opportunities for urban scenarios. Architect and structural engineer Philippe Block from the ETH Zürich presented an outlook on the future of construction, discussing the com bination of methods from the past and new technologies and production methods. Discussing the significance of human needs and location poten tials for master planning and architectural design in order to create iden tity-defining meeting places, the lecture by architect Francine Houben from Mecanoo, the renowned Delft-based architectural firm, was the final highlight of the 2016/17 programme of events. Complementing the academic studies, all of these topics are important elements in the training of future civil and environmental engineers, architects and construction technicians in terms of excellence promotion. I am happy to be able to give you an idea of our work in the past year with our latest yearbook and hope you enjoy reading it.

Programme Advisory Council’s foreword

FROM THE PROGRAMME A DVISORY COUNCIL According to the first architectural theorist known to us, Vitruvius, archi tects must possess quite a variety of skills: They must be technicians, artists, draftsmen, land surveyors, opticians, mathematicians, historians, philosophers, musicians, doctors, lawyers and astronomers all at the same time. In the history of the west, this ideal figure of the polymorphic architect is embodied by the real one, and when the Italian Renaissance first dawned, the architect became the universal humanist artist par excellence. Giotto di Bondone, Master of the Cathedral of Florence from 1334, whose technical skills and engineering achievements were highly praised, was a painter, sculptor and architect, and moreover a poet. Leonardo da Vinci was an architect, engineer, painter, sculptor, poet, art historian, natural scientist and technical inventor. Andrea Palladio, architect and theorist, was a skilled stonemason and sculptor. The versatility of the figure of the master builder is a characteristic that has lasted until today, albeit under different, even tougher conditions. In our increasingly complex world, architects and civil engineers run the risk of being driven out by a legion of specialists. Their new key to success lies in offering something the specialists cannot provide. This ‘something’ is the ability to comprehend the project at issue in its very context and as a whole, and to relate this project to their personal values and to contem porary circumstances. In other words, a contemporary architect must be both a highly skilled technician (able to interact competently with the specialists) and a critical intellectual at the same time.

P rogramme A dvisory C ouncil’ s foreword

F O R E W O R D S

This hardly seems compatible. Truly masterful technicians need certain ties, which they draw above all from their profession. By contrast, critical intellectuals need the ability and willingness to question their own actions and anything these are based upon. The deep gap between these two sides cannot be bridged by a rigidly defined professional figure, but only by someone who is willing to embark on an elaborate, sometimes risky intellectual adventure. The groundwork for this spiritual adventure, which has always been at the heart of all building activities, but is now being demanded from architects with new vigour, is being laid by the Oskar von Miller Forum in nothing less than an ideal way and under wonderfully privileged conditions.

Programme mandate The programme of the Oskar von Miller Forum is dedicated to the education of engineers in the field of construction at the Technical University of Munich. With an interdisciplinary and international orientation, it supports scholarship hold ers in their pursuit of excellence in both their own field of specialisation and in related disciplines. The programme is directly related to the university education of building professionals. Linking to the traditional concept of the ‘master builder’ who possessed combined skills in all branches of building, the programme establishes connec tions and links between construction engineering, environ mental engineering and surveying, between architecture and the artisan trades as well as social sciences, humanities, economics and natural sciences.

Programme elements INSPIRATION – INTERDISCIPLINARY AND INTERCULTURAL The programme of the Oskar von Miller Forum consists of three main components. One of these components is the Scientists-in-Residence programme. By engaging in direct dialogue with the scholarship holders, the guest scien tists contribute to and enrich the programme as well as day-to-day life at the Oskar von Miller Forum both from a professional and an intercul tural point of view through lectures, workshops and discussion sessions. The independent programme of events is the second component that imparts valuable impetus for the professional development of the scholar ship students. Internationally renowned experts hold sophisticated key note and evening lectures on issues of topical interest in construction engineering. The third component is the intercultural and interdisciplinary exchange that takes place between the scholarship students, nurtured by the shared living and working arrangements at the Forum. For example, in tandem presentations, they share insights into their studies, their doctoral research or their scientific projects. A number of additional in-house activities are organised by the residents on their own initiative. They furthermore enhance their social skills by taking part in personal development seminars.

EXCELLENCE The Oskar von Miller Forum offers future civil and environmental engi neers, architects and construction technicians temporary accommodation and contributes exciting ideas and inspiration to their education through its excellent programme. In dialogue with guest scientists from across the globe, scholarship holders enhance and extend their interests and are thus prepared for working life with tasks spanning different disciplines. It is in this way that the Oskar von Miller Forum fosters their pursuit of excellence. The Oskar von Miller Forum considers technical expertise and social skills to lie at the heart of excellence. Characteristics like per sonal initiative, staying power, a sense of responsibility and specialist knowledge are of central importance, as are the ability and willingness to communicate, to respond appropriately in any given situation, and reliability in one’s dealings with others.

LECTURES The Oskar von Miller Forum offers forward-looking academic events related to building. Excellent keynote and evening lectures are essential elements of the event programme. Focussed on securing the future and improving quality in construction engineering, they follow an interdisci plinary, intercultural, and innovative approach. Their emphasis is on topics of current interest in engineering, architecture and other constructionrelated areas, also considering social trends and developments. Keynote lectures address key topics in engineering across the disciplines. The focus of the evening lectures is on issues of topical interest.

EXHIBITIONS An exhibition devoted to the art of engineering takes place once a year. In November 2016, the exhibition Die fünfte Ansicht (The Fifth View) present ed masterly roof structures from antiquity to the present, impressively documenting the innovativeness and technical excellence delivered by architects and engineers over the centuries. The scholarship holders of the Oskar von Miller Forum presented their projects in an annual exhibition at the Summer Party.

INHOUSE EVENTS Workshops Excellent scientists are invited to the Forum within the framework of the Scientists-in-Residence programme. Besides contributing their profes sional qualifications, they support the scholarship holders through men toring. In addition, the scientists take an active part in the in-house pro gramme and day-to-day life at the Oskar von Miller Forum.

Workshop talks and alumni evenings The workshop talks are a source of inspiration for residents to plan their future careers. For instance, entrepreneurs explain how to start up a com pany and provide insight into their everyday work. During the Alumni Networking Event, scholarship students receive helpful advice from former residents for starting their career and begin building important networks for their professional life.

Tandem presentations All scholarship students present essential aspects of their work or pro jects in the form of tandem presentations. In this way, residents engage in an interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge and experience. In addi tion, by organising the work on their own, they define their own priorities and develop their personal strengths beyond their particular field of specialisation.

Welcome weekend, summer party and Christmas party At the beginning of each winter semester, there is a joint two-day outing that encourages the integration of the new scholarship students and creates a basis for a positive community spirit. The summer party offers scholarship holders and guest scientists the opportunity to meet alumni and build effective social and professional networks. A Christmas party gives all residents the opportunity to look back on the year.

Concert In keeping with the Oskar von Miller Forum’s interdisciplinary and inter cultural approach, it also fosters the cultural and social skills of its scholarship students. Concerts featuring young artists in particular are staged once a year, building a bridge between architecture and music.

JOINTLY ORGANISED EVENTS External organisers have the opportunity to use the Oskar von Miller Forum as a venue for events themed around construction and building. Scholarship students are invited to attend them and receive additional career inspiration. Sophisticated academic content that complements the teaching activities at the TUM is the guiding principle for all the events held at the Oskar von Miller Forum.

Membranes in the Construction Sector DEVELOPMENT, SYSTEMS, SPAN WIDTHS EWALD BUBNER UNIVERSITY OF DUISBURG-ESSEN

Prof. Dr.- Ing. Ewald Bubner was partner of Frei Otto in Warmbronn near Stuttgart from 1968 to 1975. In 1976, he became head of the Institute of Structural Design at the University of Essen. At the same time, he worked as a consultant in the field of lightweight construc tion for 30 companies worldwide. He furthermore took on various posts as a visiting professor, e.g. at Harvard University in Cambridge, USA, at the Universidad de Belgrano in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and others. Ewald Bubner is an author of specialist books and articles and holds lectures on lightweight construction before national and international audiences.

MEMBRANES IN THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR › Ewald Bubner

The spectacular tent-like roof of Munich’s Olympic Stadium was erected more than four decades ago and is still a major attraction. Civil engineer Ewald Bubner was the partner of Frei Otto, the pioneer of lightweight construction, for many years and as such was involved in the develop ment of this extraordinary roof structure. The focus of his lecture was therefore on the design of the Olympic roof in Munich. Ewald Bubner gave a vivid account of how models were the only means to compile the information needed to calculate and build such structures using a variety of forms and materials. He thereby provided the answer to the question of how it was actually possible to implement the com plicated structure at the Olympic Park without special computing pro grammes.

GREEN BUILDING DESIGN ›  Patrick Bellew

Building environmental engineer Patrick Bellew works with architects to create “green” buildings and is committed to sustainable design. The work of his practice, Atelier Ten, is thus rooted in vernacular design but extends into modernity through the use of state-of-the-art technology.

GARDENS BY THE BAY Singapore

In his lecture, Patrick Bellew highlighted how the application of a variety of different ecological approaches has kept influencing his work, pre senting recently completed sustainable building projects by Atelier Ten. One of his showcase projects is Singapore’s city park Gardens by the Bay which spans 101 hectares. Atelier Ten designed the entire building and energy services and provided consultancy for sustainability assessments of the master plan. Atelier Ten was founded in 1990 in London by a team of progressive engineers and has many offices worldwide.

THE ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES BEHIND A SMART ENERGY TRANSITION ›  Claudia Kemfert

“The economic opportunities behind a smart energy transition are im mense. For this reason, we should not miss them.” said Claudia Kemfert right at the start. In her book The Battle About Electricity, which was pub lished in 2013, the economist already described prevailing myths in the fields of energy research and climate protection. Claudia Kemfert began by highlighting the goals of the energy transition, namely to increase the share of electricity generated from renewable sources from currently around 28 % to 80 % in 2050. At the same time, the nuclear power plants still in operation, particularly in southern Germany, will shut down by 2022. During her lecture, the energy expert made it clear that the success of the energy transition depends on rapid implementation of all planned measures. It is necessary to begin phasing out coal now and adequately support the structural change this entails. Claudia Kemfert clearly stated her demands on politics and society: we must do more to save energy, the reliability of renewable energy supply must be increased, and mobil ity must be geared towards sustainability. She made a highly compelling statement that the energy transition can result in a permanently sustainable energy supply and that the use of energy from renewable resources must be expanded immediately and consistently.

GLOBALISATION – URBANISATION – FUTURE. IS THERE STILL HOPE FOR US?! ›  Franz-Josef Radermacher

Whether humanity will be able to face its global challenges is one of the key questions of our time. For this reason, the audience eagerly anticipated the answers provided by globalisation expert Franz-Josef Radermacher. In his lecture, he described international developments with a focus on two major problem areas: firstly against the background of rapid world population growth, increasing conflicts over resources and the problem of increasing environmental pollution, and secondly in view of global economic crises. Sustainable development is drastically compromised

ECO-ARCHITECTURE AND ECO-MASTER PLANNING ›  Ken Yeang

With 40 years’ experience in eco-architecture, Ken Yeang is regarded as one of the pioneers and visionaries of sustainable architecture. “I am an ecologist first, an architect second,” says Yeang of himself. He understands eco-design as designing in such a way that the human-built environment or the design system integrates benignly and seamlessly with the natural environment.

BEYOND BENDING: LEARNING FROM THE MASTER BUILDERS ›  Philippe Block

By combining methods from the past with new technologies and manu facturing techniques, Philippe Block advocates the efficiency of com pression geometry. It offers possibilities to move beyond the slab, beyond the dome, beyond free-form, and ultimately beyond bending. The architect and structural engineer revealed the foundations upon which the award-winning “Beyond Bending” exhibition at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2016 was based.

K eynote lectures

L E C T U R E S

The starting point for this method is a revival of forgotten fundamental knowledge. This is combined with the latest advances in the design, engineering, manufacturing and construction of shell structures. “There is a lot we can learn from the ancient master builders, who, due to economic constraints, efficiency considerations and aesthetic require ments, kept discovering innovative forms of expression,” underlines Philippe Block. Designers thus obtain a variety of possible forms with different force diagrams using novel construction planning tools that extend the traditional 2-D representation to three dimensions.

The roofs he has designed for numerous stadiums, among others in Frankfurt, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Warsaw, Brasilia and Rio, have earned civil engineer Knut Göppert status as a leading engineer in structural design. For Göppert, civil engineers will keep facing new challenges going for ward both due to the standards they set for themselves and the demands made on multifunctional uses of stadiums. Particularly the roof struc tures of large stadiums play a crucial visual and medial role. Knut Göppert is convinced that the principles of lightweight construction combined with modern technology and innovative materials will gain increasing importance and redefine the appearance of sports stadiums compared to traditional and customary forms. The lecture took place in the context of the exhibition The Fifth View – Of Arches, Shells, Domes, Roofs and Their Engineers.

Understanding a cultural building as a public asset that should be open to all citizens, and not only to a population group specifically interested in culture, is an essential approach to design today. Snøhetta implemented this perfectly while creating the Oslo opera house. Patrick Lüth, managing director of Snøhetta in Innsbruck, described the design and implementation process. As a result, the roof of the entire building is today used as a non-commercial public space, thereby creat ing a freely accessible urban landscape that provides public space. The building has therefore become a prototype of a democratic stance in architecture. Snøhetta, the most well-known architectural firm of Norway, was found ed in Oslo in 1989. In addition to architects, the team includes landscape architects, interior designers and brand designers. Snøhetta moreover often collaborates with artists such as Olafur Eliasson from Iceland. The pavilion for the London Serpentine Gallery in 2007 was a successful joint project.

PATRICK LÜTH Snøhetta | Innsbruck Patrick Lüth has been working for Snøhetta since he graduated from university, earning a degree in architecture. He first worked in Oslo for five years, then he started a branch office of Snøhetta in his native city of Inns bruck in 2011. In the years from 2011 to 2014, the University of Innsbruck gave him a teaching appointment at the Institute of Structure and Design.

No major technological change in architecture – such as the current rise of sustainable building – has come about without aesthetic consequences. But what is the potential of sustainable design in this regard? Will it also succumb to this inescapable premise for formal expression, as evidenced by every major change in the past? Or, because it involves an essentially invisible aspect, will entirely different ways and means be necessary? In his lecture, Professor David Heymann addressed these questions using examples from his own work.

DAVID HEYMANN University of Texas  |  USA Architect David Heymann is a professor at the University of Texas at Austin. The focus of his work is on how buildings can help form landscapes. In addition, he is a con tributing writer for Places Journal. In 2014 he was elevated to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects.

Concrete is a material that has been used successfully and in a variety of ways for centuries. For this reason, Martina Schnellenbach-Held and her team at the University of Duisburg-Essen undertake detailed studies of this material. A high-performance aerogel concrete (HPAC) was developed in coopera tion with the Institute of Materials Research at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) by embedding fused-quartz aerogel granules into UHPC matrices. This novel material meets the requirements of the Energy Conservation Ordinance (EnEV) in single-shell applications even using comparatively small component thicknesses accommodating con struction-relevant compressive strengths. In her lecture, Martina Schnellenbach-Held described the research con ducted to develop suitable concrete formulas and a concept for manu facturing concrete cogwheels and roller bearings.

Concert In keeping with the interdisciplinary and intercultural approach of the Oskar von Miller Forum, the cultural and social skills of the scholarship students are also fostered. Concerts featuring young artists in particular are staged once a year to build a bridge between architecture and music. On 31 January 2017, Luisa Gehlen (clarinet) and Joshua Gehlen (piano), sponsored by the Verein Freunde Junger Musiker München e.V., gave an impressive performance of works by Camille SaintSaëns, Anton Dimler, Alban Berg and other composers.

Universal Design Exhibition MCBW Munich The MCBW showcases multifaceted, inno vative design activities, offering inspiration for an interdisciplinary design discourse and attracting creative people and enter prises from all around the world to Munich.

The Inclusion 2017 Social:Design:Sprint exhibition at the Oskar von Miller Forum featured products, architectures and service designs that were presented to a jury of experts and users who rated them on the basis of broad, simple and intuitive usability and cross-generational user-friend liness without stigmatising design compromises. Visitors had the oppor tunity to talk to entrants and jury members from 4 to 12 March, discuss ing their views on universal design. Both the competition and the Universal Design exhibition are initiatives of the Institut für Universal Design, supported by bayern design and the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs.

Gemeinnützige Urlaubskasse des Bayerischen Baugewerbes e. V. For over 60 years, the procedure applied in the construction industry to fund leave pay has ensured that claims to leave and remuneration can be saved for manual workers so that they can take continuous leave. The Urlaubskasse (leave pay funds) maintains an employee account for each manual worker in the con struction industry in Bavaria and reimburses leave pay paid by employers.
