Welcome address
DEAR FRIENDS OF THE OSKAR VON MILLER FORUM, Since 2009, the Oskar von Miller Forum has been supporting the education of engineers in construction-related disciplines at the Technische Universität München (TUM) as an independent educational initiative of the Bavarian construction industry. In addition to students of the Faculty of Civil, Geo and Environmental Engineering and the Faculty of Architecture at the TUM, this also includes Munich’s Municipal Technical College of Construction Engineering and School for Master Builders (Städtische Fachschule für Bautechnik und Meisterschule für das Bauhandwerk, München). The Oskar von Miller Forum has a programme mandate. As an international centre where people from diverse construction-related disciplines can meet and exchange ideas, the Oskar von Miller Forum contributes exciting ideas and inspiration to the education of a new generation of engineers, architects and master builders through its excellent programme, while offering temporary accommodation to around 60 international guest students and scientists. The Forum’s most important job is to promote excellence and the exchange of ideas and knowledge relating to the major current topics in construction-related disciplines, thereby boosting the prospects of future engineers, architects and master builders and preparing them to thrive in an international and interdisciplinary professional environment. As well as broadening their professional horizons, young people should also be given the opportunity to understand themselves in the context of their actions as members of our society and to grow and develop accordingly.

The scientifically challenging programme is directly related to the university education of building professionals. Starting from the traditional profession of master builder, the qualification common to all branches of the building and construction industries, it establishes connections and links between construction engineering and surveying, between architecture and the artisan trades as well as other engineering and natural sciences. The programme of the Oskar von Miller Forum consists of the following components: › Excellent scientists from Germany and further afield are invited to the Oskar von Miller Forum for the purpose of promoting an intensive professional and personal dialogue with the students and trainee master builders. They enrich and support the programme in professional and cultural respects through lectures, workshops and discussion groups. › An independent event programme on interdisciplinary topics concerning construction is another important component of the programme. This includes lectures given by top international scientists, engineers and architects with exhibitions also being held.
WELCOME ADDRESS
› A further important aspect is the interdisciplinary, intercultural exchange of all the students and scientists to promote expertise and social skills. This exchange is ensured through living and working together at the Forum and through supporting, in-house events and seminars. I hope you enjoy this review of the academic year 2013/2014. Yours
Werner Lang

LIVING AT THE FORUM SMOOTHS STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PATH, PROVIDES A TASTE OF WHAT WORKING LIFE IS LIKE AND HELPS TO BROADEN CULTURAL AND SOCIAL HORIZONS. MARKO TOMSIC Resident
The programme of the Oskar von Miller Forum consists of three main components. One of these components is the scientists working and living at the Forum. In direct dialogue with the students, and through lectures, workshops and discussion sessions, they contribute to and enrich the programme as well as day-to-day life at the Oskar von Miller Forum, both from a professional and a cultural point of view. The independent and outstanding programme of events is the second component that ensures valuable impetus for the professional development of students. Internationally recognised experts hold challenging keynote and evening lectures on issues of topical interest in structural engineering and architecture. The third component is the exchange that takes place between students from different countries and from different disciplines and which is nurtured by the shared living and working arrangements at the Forum. For example, in tandem lectures, students report on their studies, their scientific projects or their doctoral research. A number of further in-house activities are organised by the residents on their own initiative. Residents also enhance their social skills by taking part in personal development seminars.

LECTURES The Oskar von Miller Forum offers forward-looking academic events in the field of construction. Excellent keynote and evening lectures form a significant part of the event programme. These not only serve aspects such as securing the future and improving quality in construction-related fields, but are also interdisciplinary, intercultural, and innovative in content. They focus on topics of current interest in engineering, architecture and other constructionrelated areas, not neglecting social issues and developments. Keynote lectures concentrate on the main topics of engineering across the disciplines. The Forum also seeks a dialogue with experts through impromptu evening lectures in order to respond flexibly to issues of topical interest. Similar to the keynote lectures, the evening lectures are interdisciplinary and intercultural in content.
EXHIBITIONS The Oskar von Miller Forum lectures are augmented by exhibitions devoted to civil engineering. In November 2013, Swiss civil engineer Jürg Conzett and photographer Martin Linsi from Switzerland provided a very special glimpse into civil engineering in their home country. Their impressive black-and-white photos in the exhibition entitled “Landscape and Structures” showcased Swiss civil engineering structures at the intersection between landscape and architectural cogency. In addition to the public exhibitions at the Oskar von Miller Forum, students also present their own in-house projects.

IN-HOUSE EVENTS (LECTURES, SEMINARS, WORKSHOPS, DISCUSSION EVENINGS, SYMPOSIA) Under the “Scientists in Residence” programme, top-class scientists are invited to the Oskar von Miller Forum for anything from several weeks to a whole semester. Besides their professional qualifications, these guest scientists are sociable, keen to work together with students, show initiative and actively participate in the programme of the Oskar von Miller Forum. In addition, the Oskar von Miller Forum invites selected scientists for a short stay of several days to provide effective stimulus on issues of current interest in the form of lectures, seminars, workshops, discussion evenings or symposia.
Tandem Lectures All of the students present essential aspects of their work or projects at tandem lectures. These presentations are to be seen as part of the in-house programme and as complementing the public programme of the Oskar von Millar Forum. They offer residents the opportunity for an intensive and interdisciplinary sharing of knowledge and experience at international level. In this way, they can define their own priorities beyond the scope of their particular specialist knowledge, whilst developing and testing their personal strengths in the process.
PROGRAMME ELEMENTS

Personal development seminars Student guests are prepared for their role as leaders in industry, teaching and research in construction-related sectors. First and foremost, they receive training in cooperation and communication skills. This training covers topics such as leadership and working together with others, conflict management as well as conversational and intercultural skills. Students also receive advice regarding job application procedures, including the chance to deal with their own job application situations under the guidance of a coach. Working closely with professional trainers, all of the seminars are tailored so to meet the individual needs of the residents.
Welcome Weekend, Bavarian Evening, International Evening, Summer Festival and Christmas Party At the beginning of the winter semester, a “Welcome Weekend” is usually held to encourage the integration of new students and create a basis for a positive community spirit. Last year, it was held on 11/12 October 2013. The summer festival, which took place this year on 27 June 2014, provides an opportunity to cultivate the contact with former residents and in this way forge a relationship with the Forum above and beyond the mere fact of once having lived there. In addition, departing students are given a warm farewell, so that they will still feel a tie to the Forum long after they have left. The Bavarian Evening, the International Evening and the Christmas Party are further in-house events that foster a sense of community between residents. These events all help to create an effective social and professional network for students.

Concert Through in-house concerts, which take place once or twice a year, the Oskar von Miller Forum furthers the cultural awareness of its residents. In cooperation with the association "Freunde Junger Musiker München e. V.", a concert was held on 28 January with the young percussionist Simone Rubino. The prize winner of numerous competitions played works of Askell Masson, John Psathas and Anna Ignatowicz-Glińska, among others.
JOINTLY ORGANISED EVENTS External organisers have the opportunity of arranging their events in the field of construction at the Oskar von Miller Forum, which residents of the Forum are invited to attend. In this way, additional stimulus is provided for the university education of construction engineers and contributions are made to the pursuit of knowledge and skills. A scientifically challenging programme that complements teaching activities at the TUM is thus the guiding principle for all the events held at the Oskar von Miller Forum.

LANDSCAPE AND STRUCTURES › Jürg Conzett
As the planner of a number of bridges in Switzerland, Jürg Conzett concentrates on structures and their relationship to the landscape. Bridges, tunnels, passes, viaducts, roads or their supporting walls are a very distinctive feature of Switzerland’s landscape. A central theme of Jürg Conzett’s work are structures serving traffic routes which on the one hand take account of engineering and efficiency yet are also designed to elicit certain emotional responses in the user and beholder. Jürg Conzett shows how important the design value of traffic structures and the cultural significance of construction engineering are.

The exhibition conceived by Jürg Conzett, which was opened after this lecture, shows photographs of Swiss civil engineering structures that were taken in cooperation with photographer Martin Linsi. In the process, buildings of architectural interest were the focus of attention. Jürg Conzett presented many of the photos in the course of his lecture. Two models of his exhibition were also presented – the panoramic road at Susten mountain pass and the first motorway from Chur to Landquart in Grisons.

URBAN DEVELOPMENT Kuwait Rapid reconstruction after the war damage in 1990/91 and particularly the construction of numerous new high-rise buildings have created Kuwait’s impressive skyline today. Rising to a height of 413 metres, a new skyscraper – the Al Hamra Tower – was built from 2005 until 2011 in the city centre and is one of the tallest buildings in the world.
The engineering and architectural community has begun to develop new ideas that will help to mitigate the negative impacts on the environment through increased urban density, creative approaches to design, and sustainable district and city-wide developments. The building, in a continuous exchange with the city, is integrally connected to the larger urban context through the flows of people, transportation, electricity, water, waste, data, and many other forms of information. This interconnection has inspired new concepts of building systems that incorporate theories of morphology, self-reflection, and rheology, which affect the individual and collective performance of structures within a broader ecological context.

Tackling poverty and the climate change within planetary limits Sustainable Development Goals are being drafted to replace the Millennium Development Goals in 2015. It is clear that eradication of extreme poverty requires transformational change which recognises planetary boundaries, mitigates and adapts to climate change and allows recovery of ecological systems alongside increased agriculture yields. It is in cities and their hinterland that this change is most needed through retrofit and new development models. The Ecological Sequestration Trust (TEST) was formed in 2011 to demonstrate at city-region scale how to create a step change in improving energy, water, food security in the face of the combined challenges of changes of climate, demography and increasing resource-scarcity.

Mitigation and adaptation techniques to counterbalance urban overheating The temperature of cities continues to increase because of the undeniable climatic change and the heat island phenomenon. The observed high ambient temperatures intensify the energy problem of cities, deteriorate comfort conditions, put in danger the vulnerable population and amplify pollution problems. Higher urban temperatures increase the energy consumption for cooling and raise the peak electricity demand, intensify the pollution patterns in cities and increase the ozone concentration, deteriorate the outdoor thermal comfort conditions, increase the ecological footprint of the cities, intensify the health problems and increase the indoor heat stress on low income population. To counterbalance this phenomenon, important mitigation technologies have been developed and proposed. Mitigation techniques aim to balance the thermal budget of cities by increasing thermal losses and reducing the corresponding gains. Among the more important of the proposed tech-

niques are those aiming to increase the albedo of the urban environment, expand the green spaces in cities and use the natural heat sinks in order to dissipate excess heat. Recent real scale applications involving the use of the above mitigation techniques have resulted in very important climatic benefits and a significant reduction of the heat island strength. During the lecture the scientific information available on the mitigation and adaptation potential of the existing major technological developments were reviewed in a critical light.

Lacaton and Vassal Architects claim that the first task of the architect is to observe carefully, to explore, to think, to take positions, to set down intentions, and then to decide what to do, what to build, and sometimes decide whether to build or not.
SAINT-NAZAIRE LA CHESNAIE France
The challenges of contemporary society all seem, basically, to revolve around a culture of paying attention, interpreting and transforming the existing environment. The point is to exalt the capacities of the existing, to look at it in a new light. The existing provides the preliminary structure for all the projects of the architects Anne Lacaton and JeanPhilippe Vassal.

URBAN DESIGN › Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani
The architecture of a city should not be left to the mercy of the political, social, economic or technological forces that shape it. Rather, it needs to be designed, and to this end it needs first of all an intelligent plan that envisages a mix of different uses, a system of beautiful and varied city spaces, a harmonious blend of urban architectural styles, a respectful dialogue between politics and urban architecture and finally a commitment to change and openness. For every city is so complex and surprising in its social and economic development that it cannot really be planned. But it can be designed. Only then, when it has been designed with competence and insight, will it become a desirable habitat for the people who live there and a part of their identity.

The architect and city historian Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani is an advocate of the traditional compact cityscape. His theoretical and practical work turns on the question: “What kind of city do we want to live in?” He therefore demands of city planners that they analyse time-honoured structures and learn from them when planning contemporary urban projects. He has a clear preference for built-up inner city areas, and rejects out of hand suburban housing estates lacking defined and designed public spaces.

INTERDISCIPLINARY DESIGN › Werner Sobek
Today, when ever more complex buildings are being designed to satisfy ever more stringent demands, the question has to be asked, in which context and under which framework conditions is our built environment actually created. What role can and should architects – and engineers – play? In the design phase of a building a number of iterative processes occur. Although sophisticated analytical methods can help in decision-making, geometric design, stability, joining of different materials or building energetics are not the only considerations. Design also involves lighting effects,

colour and shade, surface finishes, micro and macro structures, temperature control and much more. Not infrequently, unquantifiable or intangible factors play a role.
STATION Z Sachsenhausen
But how can all of these factors be integrated to form a complex whole that works? Knowledge of how art is created cannot be expressed in writing. However, learning and understanding can be fostered through constant practice. And it’s imperative that this practice begins in the universities. Only by learning the language of the “other” will interdisciplinary design become possible at all.

Remote sensing and data visualization technologies are rapidly transforming the way we design, plan, build, and operate facilities and infrastructure today. Access to reliable and fast data, information, and knowledge is becoming increasingly important in construction engineering and management. In his lecture Dr. Jochen Teizer highlighted research being performed at his RAPIDS (Real-time Automated Project Information and Decision Systems) Construction Safety and Technology Laboratory with the aim of achieving safer and more productive work environments. First, the state-of-the-art in emerging real-time location sensing (RTLS), as built data capturing (terrestrial laser scanning and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV)), and information modelling (BIM/VDC) technologies were reviewed. The lecture then addressed the following important research questions: How can unsafe and unproductive work practices that are unknowingly designed or planned into the schedule of construction models be automatically identified early in the planning cycle and eliminated? What impact does real-time resource location tracking technology have on site layout planning and control? How can construction site data be collected and used to advance workforce education and training? Methods and results of field trials were shown; future research and development was discussed with the audience.
JOCHEN TEIZER Atlanta | USA Dr. Jochen Teizer was director of the Realtime Automated Project Information and Decision Systems (RAPIDS) laboratory until May 2014. The laboratory is located in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. RAPIDS, where Jochen Teizer had a teaching assignment, specialized on safety and technology research and education in the construction, mining and infrastructure industries.

Civil engineers and architects design structures; the operational performance of these structures depends strongly on the characteristics of the water or air flows inside or around them. For example, thermal comfort in a theatre depends on the indoor air velocities and temperatures that are affected by the locations of the ventilation units, while water pollution in a marina is controlled by the rate of water exchange with the surrounding waters that is influenced by the orientation of its entrance. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models are tools that simulate these environmental flows by solving well-known equations of fluid motion, heat transfer and pollutant transport. CFD models calculate the distributions of water or air flow velocities and other characteristics, such as temperatures or pollutant concentrations, describing the qualitative status of the structure; then, based on these characteristics, its performance (e. g. thermal comfort or pollution) can be determined. CFD models enable civil engineers and architects to examine alternative designs of new structures (in their actual dimensions) and decide on the most effective; moreover, they can investigate different modifications on existing structures aiming at increasing their current performance. The lecture demonstrated the main features of CFD modeling and highlighted a series of CFD projects that were performed at the Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA).

Natural sciences and technology as a prerequisite for material prosperity Scientific and technical education is not only a prerequisite for material prosperity in the future, it is of itself an immaterial factor in prosperity in that it equips the individual to deal with life’s challenges and also shapes his worldview. In the face of future challenges for mankind in the areas of environment, mobility, communication, etc., it is more important than ever to encourage research, development and implementation in the marketplace, particularly among young people. Using classic technical milestones as illustration, the Deutsches Museum illuminates successful historical developments, and with its modern exhibitions points towards the future, the path to which is rooted in a substantial dialogue with society. In this way, as Germany’s most frequently visited museum, it fulfils its scientific-technical educational mission. The Munich civil engineer Oskar von Miller (1855 –1934) defined the goal of the Deutsches Museum as bringing together the many diverse branches of science and technology in one place and in this way, by showing the fullest picture possible, making progress comprehensible to the individual. “I am firmly convinced that the many future challenges facing mankind will only be met by a close cooperation between science and society,” writes Wolfgang Heckl in his highly regarded book “Die Kultur der Reparatur” (The Culture of Repair) (Carl Hanser Verlag, Munich 2013).
WOLFGANG M. HECKL Munich Prof. Dr. Wolfgang M. Heckl studied physics at the Technische Universitaet Muenchen, obtaining his doctorate in the field of biophysics. He has been Director-General of the Deutsches Museum since 2004 and heads the thematic network “Nanotechnology” at the National Academy of Science and Engineering, Acatech. Wolfgang M. Heckl was Professor for Experimental Physics at the LMU Muenchen between 1993 and 2009. Heckl’s book “Die Kultur der Reparatur”, published in August 2013, puts him in the vanguard of the current “Do-itYourself-Movement”.

On the evening of 23 January 2014 a bronze relief of Oskar von Miller was unveiled in the library of the Oskar von Miller Forum following the lecture given by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang M. Heckl. Marie von Miller-Moll, granddaughter of Oskar von Miller, had made the relief available to the Oskar von Miller Forum and was a guest of honour on that evening. With her sister, Charlotte Ottow, she assumed the task of unveiling the bronze relief during a special ceremony. In the presence of the residents of the Oskar von Miller Forum and the invited guests, including several members of the Miller family, the two sisters vividly recounted their memories of their grandfather. Their childhood in Munich was shaped by the presence of this eminent figure. Much to the delight of the guests, Monika Lassak, the granddaughter of the artist who made the relief, also related childhood memories of her grandfather. Theodor Georgii, sculptor and medallion maker, member of the Secession in Munich and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, created a number of portraits of famous leading figures in Munich.
OSKAR VON MILLER The German construction engineer became widely known as a hydropower pioneer and founder of the Deutsches Museum. We owe the basis of our modern water supply to the visionary engineer. Oskar von Miller was project manager during the construction of the Walchensee power plant from 1918 to 1924.

Urban mobility 2.0: synergetic – intelligent – electric The hype surrounding electro-mobility has noticeably abated in the last two years. Despite ambitious government goals, sales figures for electrically powered vehicles in Germany are still at a low level. By contrast, in the shadow of the especially media-fuelled debate, it appears that electrically powered vehicles are doing well in the car sharing sector, as demonstrated by the “eCarsharing” systems set up in Berlin, Stuttgart and Ulm. In these cities, users can spontaneously hire electrically powered cars and drop them off again at specific locations. In this way, a completely new, flexible and low-emissions form of urban mobility is being created that is welcomed especially by young people in town centres. This new form of mobility is being made possible by technological innovations such as mobile internet technologies, novel vehicle concepts and battery charging infrastructure, through a new form of mobility culture of “sharing not owning” and through the political will to create new transportation solutions for inner cities. An essential part of the whole concept is that car sharing systems be closely integrated into public transportation systems and be powered by renewable energies. If consistently pursued, electrical car sharing has the potential to change the transportation systems of our cities so as to create a clean and flexible form of mobility that can significantly improve the quality of our urban environment. Drawing on a current study by Buro Happold, Ingrid Pohl and Sebastian Seelig explained the background to this new form of mobility. On the basis of most recent developments and thinking with regard to the city of Berlin, they showed how electrically powered urban mobility can be organized in a synergetic and intelligent way and also presented the creative potential it holds for our city streets.

Environmental Augmentation – for High Performance Urban Systems Design professionals are seeking to embrace a holistic approach for sustainability innovation, whereby practices and technologies are utilized not only to minimize adverse environmental and social impacts but also to regenerate urban ecologies. This is inevitably vital to mitigate the consequential risks involving rapid population growth, urbanization, economic uncertainty, carbon emissions and energy use, resource and ecosystem challenges, and anthropomorphic climate change. This lecture highlighted research and practice methods toward achieving high performance urban systems. It demonstrated preeminent environmental design, building science and technology that strategize thinking to achieve low-impact responsive built environments. Such framework is relevant to master planning, building structures, systems analyses and detail assemblies. The content addressed environmental augmentation through advancing design process, concept generation, performance optimization, and coherent integrated typologies. Some of the aforementioned topics have been available through scientific publications and others assumed the insider perspective reflecting upon progressive international landmark projects. The emphasis promotes the relationship between integral systems and their energy use to posit effective plans for design typologies, emergent building methods and materials performance and human health, comfort and sensorial thresholds.

Surveying technology in tunnel construction today, tomorrow (and beyond) Since antiquity, the construction of underground structures (tunnels, shafts and caverns) has been an enormous engineering achievement and is a fascinating branch of surveying. How is it possible that two tunnels, cut through several kilometres from opposite sides can meet up with millimetre precision (which can even be forecast)? And how is it that surface subsidence resulting from tunnel building can be clearly observed from outer space? This, and indeed much more, is exactly what modern surveying technology and systems can deliver today. Surveying of the subterranean world is high-tech business in all its aspects. But how long can the profession of the surveying engineer continue to exist? The lecture started with an overview of current engineering geodetic problems and of measurement solutions in the field of tunnel construction. The most important trends, ideas and visions from the field of R&D were then presented based on GEODATA’s own projects and activities. Topics such as tunnel networks, measuring and monitoring systems, robotics, guidance systems, virtual/mixed/augmented reality, information and communication systems as well as artificial intelligence played a key role.

THE MANY OPPORTUNITIES [...] PRESENTED TO US RESIDENTS AT THE FORUM PROVIDE A UNIQUE WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE AND “KNOW HOW” FOR THE PROFESSION SOUGHT AND LATER LIFE. ULRICH GERSTLAUER Resident
Two and three day personal development seminars were again held this year for the Forum’s students. In cooperation with experienced trainers, these seminars are especially tailored to the needs of students in construction-related fields and trainee master builders and their role as future leaders in business, teaching and research. The Leadership I: Managing Projects” seminar was held in October 2013, during which participants were prepared for work in project teams, practised acting as facilitators in groups and learned motivation techniques. The “Leadership III” seminar in April 2014 was dedicated particularly to training perception and integration skills. The seminar dealt with topics such as team work, conflict resolution and work in intercultural teams. The “Leadership IV: Presenting myself and my project” seminar in April 2014 focused on building an awareness of one’s own skills and treated topics such as development potential and values when dealing with other people.

On 11 October 2013 the bus set off towards Lake Chiemsee with all the students and the office team on-board. Their first destination was the palace on Herrenchiemsee. After taking the ferry over to the island, they had a snack at the restaurant there. The bus then took the participants to Aschau where they took the cable car up the Kampenwand Mountain to the snow-covered Sonnenalm situated at an altitude of 1,500 m. They had a convivial evening meal and stayed overnight at the mountain lodge. The next morning a group of experienced hikers ventured down the mountain through knee-high snow while the others opted for the cable car. The trip was concluded by eating lunch in the historic Alpenrose restaurant at Samerberg. Apart from giving the 'old' and 'new' guests the opportunity to become better acquainted in an informal and relaxed atmosphere, the focus was on creating personal, professional and international networks.

AN EVENT COMBINING CULTURE, SHOW SEGMENTS, GOOD FOOD, GREAT COMPANY AND A RELAXED, CONVIVIAL ATMOSPHERE. MARÍA JESÚS ALONSO GONZÁLEZ Resident
CUSTOMS, LIFESTYLE AND TRADITIONS THROUGH THE YEAR At the suggestion of some of the residents, an in-house Bavarian Evening was organized on 28 November 2013, the purpose of which was to introduce all residents to Bavarian customs and culture and especially to give those coming from abroad a taste of Munich life. Devised as a skit on a trip through the seasons, the spectators dropped in on the Octoberfest, paid a visit to a beer garden and were treated to a performance of “Schuhplattln”, where they gained some insight into what makes Bavarians tick.

Christmas Party LIGHT-HEARTED AND CONTEMPLATIVE To review the past year together, the residents of the Oskar von Miller Forum organised an in-house Christmas party by themselves which involved putting up Christmas decorations and preparing a programme. To get the right atmosphere, a reception was held in the library which featured music with a piano, clarinets, the Oskar von Miller choir and a welcome address. This was followed by a meal and other programme items such as presentations of anecdotes, Christmas tales and photos as well as an exchange of gifts on the 7th floor.

Concert SIMONE RUBINO CONCERTS An acoustic experience In keeping with the interdisciplinary and intercultural approach of the Oskar von Miller Forum, what we know as the “fine arts” are also an integral part of the programme. In this spirit, concerts featuring outstanding artists are held once or twice a year, rounding off the Forum’s event programme. These concerts also provide an opportunity to enjoy the space from an acoustic perspective.
TURIN | ITALY On 28 January 2014 in cooperation with FREUNDE JUNGER MUSIKER MÜNCHEN e.V. a concert was held featuring the young percussionist Simone Rubino, winner of numerous competitions, including the International Competition “Luigi Nono”, “Special Prize for Young Talent” of the “Pendim” competition in Bulgaria, “Universal Marimba Competition” 2012, “Marco Fiorindo”, Turin, “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Conservatory Competition”, Berlin, who played works by a total of ten artists altogether, including “One Study One Summary” by John Psathas and “Toccata” by Anna Ignatowicz-Glińska.

International Evening A LITTLE BIT OF “HOME FROM HOME” The residents proudly permitted a peek into their own particular home country. As part of the International Evening on 13 May 2014, about 40 countries, including some German federal states, accompanied by great merriment introduced themselves and their culinary specialities. In entertaining presentations, particular customs, outstanding cultural events or historical peculiarities were presented. Guests were repeatedly encouraged to take an active part in the proceedings, with the result that many ended the evening as practiced dancers, singers, beer-tasters and Bollywood artists. Moreover, the residents now know how to pass themselves off as genuine Italians without opening their mouth as well as how to fight the seven deadly sins with the piñata. While full of irony, the evening was also deeply moving, because all of the reports had one thing in common: love for one’s own native land.

Summer Festival NIGHT OF THE OSKARS What could better exemplify excellence than a trophy to honour the best in his or her field? Under this year’s motto “Night of the Oskars” the residents made the summer festival into a triumphant finale of the university year. The name “Oskar” was a reference to both the renowned film prize as well as to the person who lent his name to the Oskar von Miller Forum. This twofold meaning of the word “Oskar” was obvious from the decorative Oskar figure that had been specially crafted: half Academy Award, half Oskar von Miller.

Besides the residents at the Oskar von Miller Forum, guests also included numerous alumni as well as representatives of the executive board of the Gemeinnützige Urlaubskasse (non-profit leave pay fund) of the Bavarian construction industry and the Programme Advisory Council. All were gathered together to look back on a successful year and to celebrate the Forum and its residents. While Tobias Schittenhelm entertainingly guided the audience through the programme, three of the residents, Stefan Taglieber, Raphaela Guin and Raphael Zuber presented their work, which was also included in the exhibition that was opened later on. The guests had an opportunity to learn about the work of each resident, which was summarized on 36 posters, and find out what the students had accomplished in their year at the Oskar von Miller Forum. After the dinner a group of residents surprised the audience with a choreography they had rehearsed. The summer festival came to a triumphant close with an Oskar award ceremony carried out by the students in which the special qualities of each resident were given due recognition. Over the course of the evening the strong sense of cohesion between the residents was palpable: each someone special, each an Oskar.
