CHAROLAIS
The Story Behind “The Big White Bull On I-29”
An Iconic Landmark!
W
e recently needed to make a few “touch ups” to the AICA headquarters building, including the iconic Charolais bull that stands on top of the globe identifying the AmericanInternational Charolais Association headquarters. The story behind the bull that will forever be a part of Charolais history spans 50 years and covers nearly a thousand miles. The journey of “the big white bull” proudly standing out on Interstate 29 in Kansas City, began in 1969 with a design contest. In 1969, AICA was in the process of moving the headquarters to Houston, Texas, upon completion of a new office building near the Astro Domain complex. The decision was made to launch a contest to design the sign that would signal to the universe, that the Charolais breed was here to stay. The winning design would receive $500 in cash, donated by B.R. McNulty, Houston, Texas and a Full French heifer from the 1945 importation of Clif Robertson’s Triple AAA Ranch in Phoenix, Arizona. Robertson was co-chairman of the promotion committee
and efficiency traits that have made the entire beef industry take a look at production programs.” To further secure the magnificent sign’s place in Charolais history, a traveling award for the herd winning the highest number of premiums in the National Charolais Show was created. The trophy was a near exact replica of the spire, globe and bull. The award was named The Challenge Trophy. If an exhibitor won the award three times, it was retired to the exhibitor’s possession and the competition began again with a duplicate trophy awarded to the next winners. The 1960s and early 1970s were exciting times in the beef industry. Still with little scientific data or modern genetic evaluation technology, the industry was rapidly moving toward cattle that produced leaner, higher growth and more red meat yield. Charolais was experiencing extraordinary growth and commanding an unprecedented presence throughout the industry. The early 1980s abruptly altered the beef industry momentum
The journey of “the big white bull” proudly standing out on Interstate 29 in Kansas City, began in 1969 with a design contest. and member of the board of directors at the time. The winner also had the option to take $5,000 cash instead of the heifer. In addition, the winner would receive an all-expense paid trip for two to the new building dedication ceremonies to be introduced as the sign’s designer. A total of 228 design entries were received and narrowed down to three finalists. All current members at the time received ballots and were asked to vote to determine the final winning design. Tom Riley’s, North Little Rock, Arkansas, design was the overwhelming favorite. Homer Peterson, Bull Shoals, Arkansas, submitted the runner-up design. All along, the intent of the AICA leadership in 1969 was to create a landmark sign. That mission was accomplished. The completed sign rose 74 feet above the ground. The big, white Charolais bull was constructed of fiberglass, weighed 500 pounds, was 17 feet long and 11 feet high—about 150% of life size. He sat atop a revolving, 5-ton tubular steel globe, supported by a single spire. The newly constructed Houston headquarters was dedicated on February 25, 1970. During the dedication, executive secretary J. Scott Henderson, reported, “During the decade of the 1960s, transfers of Charolais increased 1500%; annual registrations of purebred Charolais increased 2200% and the membership total increased 1900%.” He went on to say, “Charolais has progressed faster than any other breed in recent years as a result of performance
when agriculture, as well as the nation, found itself in a downward economic spiral that would last well into the middle of the decade. Fifteen years after dedicating the new breed association headquarters, the decision was made to move the headquarters to Kansas City. Ground was broken for the new headquarters in August 1983 and officially dedicated in November 1984, during the American Royal festivities. AICA would join six other breed associations in the Kansas City area and secure the city’s designation as the “agricultural center of the world.” The big, white Charolais bull that had become such a landmark in Houston, was destined for his new home in Kansas City. Frank Wesson, Koshkonong, Missouri, was building committee chairman during the Kansas City construction. Frank said in the initial meetings, the committee was impartial to the actual building design, as long as the bull dominated the structure. The bull was transported on a semi-truck from Houston to his new home, mounted to the exterior brick wall, facing west for millions traveling on Interstate 29 each year to see. The bull still stands on top on the globe that was trimmed in half, down to 3.5 tons, and transported to the new site. The original CHAROLAIS letters still identify the headquarters. More than 50 years ago, AICA leadership sought out to build an iconic landmark. Mission accomplished.

Features of the Online Registration System
AICA’s online system has several newly enhanced features. Log in with your breeder number and password and you’ll find additional reports listed under the “My Reports” tab. The new Sire/Dam Performance Summary gives options to print lifetime records on individual animals or all active sires and or dams. You also have the option to get reports by calving year. Many other reports are available including performance reports and ultrasound reports. Ultrasound barn sheets can be generated using the report function. You have the option to print barn sheets by calving year or by individual animals. Printing quick copies of individual certificates is another useful enhancement of the “reports” function. Members use the Herd EPD reports to keep up on the most current numbers for the animals in their herd. This list can be sorted by sex and listed in several different orders. There is also the option to choose a birth date range. Under the “tools” tab, you will find a new “Data Export” button. This data export gives you the flexibility to export data on animals in your herd and use those data files in your own management packages. You can download and save the files directly to your computer in a CSV (can be opened in Excel) format. There are many options within this feature including selecting the type of animal to export and specific data. Dues Reminder
Annual dues are now due. Active members – $100; junior member – $25. Junior member Charolais Journal subscriptions are an additional $25. Reminders were mailed in December. Be sure to update all contact information including e-mails and websites. If dues are not renewed for 2019, online passwords will not work. Year letter for 2019 is G.
Record your 2019 born calves using AICA’s online system. Add the data as the calves are born; continue to update the records as you add weaning and yearling data. Register the calves at any tie by adding their name.

Belief. Involvement. Passion
Working for the Breed

CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
T
ucked away south of the historic Houston Astrodome in the small town of Liverpool, Texas, you will find an industry staple in the Texas Charolais bull market — Bar J Charolais — owned and operated by Larry and Beth Ludeke. Enthusiasm for the breed began for Larry when his local FFA chapter visited the 1966 San Antonio Livestock Show calf scramble. After earning himself a $200 calf scramble certificate, Larry purchased his first Charolais bull to utilize on his original 15 head cow herd. In high school Larry’s involvement with sports grew and his cattle took a backseat through his college years at Sam Houston State. Fast forward 30 years, Larry and Beth were ready to reinvigorate Larry’s passion for cattle. Not just any cattle would do – Charolais were the only option. “I missed having cows,” Larry said. “I really wanted Charolais cattle and I wasn’t going to compromise for them.” In the fall of 2001 the Ludekes closed on their property in Liverpool and wasted no time in selecting their cattle, filling Bar J with their original Charolais cow base by Spring of 2002. The cows came from Robert and Modena Jernigan from East Texas, who were involved in the breed and active with their Charolais sales management business in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Larry liked the Jernigan’s cattle and he made a deal with them for a package of 20 females, including two pairs, two cows and a group of heifers. “At the time I didn’t realize they were French cattle, but it was alright with me because as a teenager the United States had the first importation of Full French Charolais cattle from Canada,” Larry said. “In fact the breeder who I bought my very first bull from had a partnership interest in a French bull from Canada, so I was familiar with the cattle.” Today at Bar J Charolais Larry has a solid local commercial bull market, selling private treaty and enjoying visiting customers looking through the cattle. By sharing his passion for the breed, he works to spark an interest in others for Charolais. Key selection traits for Bar J bulls are being sound on the ground, having the ability to travel as well as low birth weights. Charolais bulls offer so much in terms of heterosis and vigor, the rest will fall into place, he said. “I can’t think of another animal as a herd bull that would do more for any kind of cow, I think the Charolais bull is the best bull in the world,” Larry said. Bar J also has thought outside of the box with their southern geographical location exploring international trade options with bull buyers from Mexico, where they typically sell three or four shipments each year. “Although I fell into the Full French Charolais cattle, I have continued on those genetics and have catered to people coming from outside the U.S. wanting French cattle,” Larry said. “These French cattle also have an advantage for the South, as they have adapted to the environment around them. They can move, have lighter birth weights and they fit into the part of our world better.”

In the beef industry the word “value” is often used, but can be hard to quantify. Taylor Stabel and Jim Jennings hope to change this commonality by creating measurable value for commercial producers of Charolais-cross cattle. In the fall of 2018 Stabel and Jennings were presented with an opportunity to buy a purebred Charolais herd, and the idea for Full Circle Cattle Co. quickly developed. As Owner and Operations Manager, respectively, Stabel and Jennings have over 20 years combined experience at Kearny County Feeders, a 35,000 head feedyard with an additional 10,000 head growing facility in Lakin, Kan. These two see more than 80,000 animals move through the feedyard in a year, and they know which cattle can perform and meet beef demands. “My favorite type to feed is a Char cross,” Stabel has said on more than one occasion. Because of the feed efficiency, health and cutability, there is a high demand among cattle feeders for these animals. With future bull sales, Full Circle Cattle Co. will offer a guaranteed buy-back agreement for any progeny to be fed at Kearny County Feeders. Not only will this allow producers to realize premiums for their calf crop, but it will also help meet the feeding demand for these animals as well.

AICA was one of the first breed registries to establish a show program, Roll of Excellence (ROE) that provides national level competition on a regional basis across the United States. The AICA ROE Sire program recognizes sires for the achievement of progeny in National ROE Shows, Class A ROE Shows and Class B ROE Shows. A sire qualifies as a ROE Sire when progeny have accumulated a minimum total of 400 ROE points. A minimum of 200 points must be class A ROE points. For an outline of the ROE program, contact the AICA Director of Activities.

TEAGUE FARMS
HONORED AS Commercial Producer of the Year by Linda Eck
Ronald Teague is a firm believer that picking top-notch bulls is the key to success. Teague and his family operate a cow/ calf operation in Siler, North Carolina and were recently awarded the American International Charolais Association’s Commercial Producer of the Year Award. By choosing high-end Charolais bulls, the Teagues have seen increased weaning weights and increased profits. “We’ve tried a black bull, we’ve tried them all” said Ronald, quickly noting that the extra 70 or 80 pounds they get at weaning by using Charolais bulls adds up to a lot of extra profit for their operation. Raised on a dairy farm, Teague got his first taste of the beef industry after his aging dad sold out the dairy cows and made the switch to beef with a herd of Charolais.

JUNIOR
You can make a difference Work your way up!
H
ello everyone! My name is Abbee Carnes and I am serving as your 2018-2019 Area 8 Director and Secretary. I currently graduated from Oklahoma State University with a major in Agribusiness and a minor in Farm land and Agriculture Real Estate Appraisal. Recently I have decided to continue my education and attend Clemson University to obtain a master’s in agriculture education. Throughout my entire college career, I have had the pleasure of serving on the AIJCA board since 2015. With my first every junior national show being in 2014 I quickly decided that I wanted to be one of the individuals who helped lead this great organization. After leaving the junior national
day. My friend Caroline and I attended all the leadership conferences and started to make new friends every time we attended something new. To this day I still stay in touch with every person I have met at the junior national shows I have attended. The entire week of the show there was always something exciting going on and a way for you to get more involved. From the time we left the show we were planning on what all we were going to do the following summer and plan to make it one of the best weeks. I love telling this story because it helps show juniors that even though you didn’t grow up going to the national shows, you can still work your way up to the top to help lead such a great organization. show in Hutchinson, Kansas in 2014, I told my parents I was going to get on the junior board and somehow make a difference. Growing up my family didn’t have the big ranch, cattle herd, or even a farm. I always was taught to have respect for the agriculture world but my love for this industry started to really bloom during my middle school years. Joining the FFA program my freshman year of high school was one of the best decisions I have ever made. This is when I started to show cattle in the local and state shows around my home state, South Carolina. After traveling around the state for a year or two we decided it was time to branch out and go to our first junior national show. So, in the summer of 2014 my family and our very good friends, the Davis family, packed the trailer and headed 18 hours to the state of Kansas. We knew no one at the show. It was a feeling of being a little fish in a huge sea! Quickly everyone in the barns made us feel welcomed and offered help with anything we needed. 4 years on the board have helped me connect with breeders from all over the country and become more involved in the Charolais industry. I have got to travel many miles, make many new friends, and it helped me decide on what I wanted to do in college. Being involved in this organization helped me find who I was and what I wanted to become as an individual in the future. My hope is that juniors who hear my story that come from my background will take it to heart and know that they can make a difference. They can work their way up to what they want. Because of this organization and the people involved I have grown as an individual in more ways than I could have every imagined. With that said, I challenge you juniors to become involved in your state and national level organization. You will never run out of things to grow on and you will be surprised of where these opportunities can take you. I hope that you are all ready for a great week this summer, are ready to make new friends, and make new memories because we have them ready for you.

CHAROLAIS BREEDERS ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIP
Dear Charolais Breeders, Despite the extreme drought last summer and the long, hard winter this year, coupled with a seemingly never ending spring rain season, our Missouri Charolais Breeders have remained strong to make another successful year promoting Charolais cattle locally and nationally. This past spring, Charolais sales remained very strong, confirming our product remains in demand with not only our own seedstock producers, but where our market is most valued, the commercial industry. With 10 of the top bull and female sales in the country, Missouri Charolais breeders are celebrating another year of success on a national scale. As reported in the Charolais Journal, 15 bull and female sales across Missouri during the past 12 months grossed $3.9 M. While there has been a downward trend in cattle prices, Charolais breeders should rest assured that we have what matters most to the commercial cattleman: more pounds. As we know, more efficient pounds means more money in all pricing trends. Our breeders have done an outstanding job reaching out to the commercial market to promote our product. Currently, Missouri is # 2 for active members, # 4 for junior members, and # 3 for enrolled females. With this much success in our state, the excitement is building for another successful year marketing Charolais genetics throughout Missouri, as well as the national level. A quick glance through our Breeder Directory shows a dedicated group of breeders committed to marketing the best Charolais genetics you can find anywhere. Looking to the future, we look forward to visiting with you at several upcoming events where Missouri’s display of Charolais genetics is second to none. The Missouri State Fair remains the largest state fair for both open and junior Charolais shows. Over the course of the last year, several MCBA members, as well as the Missouri State Fair Foundation, have worked hard to raise money to improve the Charolais barn at the Missouri State Fair. On Saturday afternoon, August 10, there will be a dedication to present the new Litton Memorial and Legacy Wall, as well as the first phase of improvements to the barn. We look forward to seeing you there! This fall at the American Royal, please plan to participate in and attend the Royal Breeders Bull Classic and the Ten Grand Sale. The Breeders Classic is a highly anticipated event you don’t want to miss! We are re-introducing the Ten Grand format to the female sale since it was so well received in the past. A bull classic membership fee will not be required to sell a female in the Ten Grand Sale. Please contact Greg Hubert or David Hobbs with your consignments. As usual, there are several breeders having fall sales, so don’t forget to check out the calendar of upcoming events. Our breeders would love to discuss their programs with you at these events, so feel free to come to these events and get to know our breeders and their cattle. Feel free to contact any board member or breeder if you have questions on upcoming activities and how you can be involved.
Sincerely, Jeannine Doughty MCBA President

In 2002, when Larry was still new to the current show ring world, he went to the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo to watch the Charolais show confirming a great opportunity to add visibility to his program. “I like showing cattle, and I have since I was younger,” Larry said. “To me it is the best form of advertisement for your cattle.” In 2003, Bar J exhibited two heifers at their first National Charolais Show in Houston and have been actively involved in the breed ever since. “We were green as a gourd and had a lot to learn,” Larry said. “I gradually got involved. Time is a funny thing for how you can fall into things.” From his early days in the showring, Larry has been a big supporter of the association, serving on the AmericanInternational Charolais Association (AICA) Board of Directors for 5 years, serving as both Vice President and President of the Board for three of those years. “When I got on the Board I tried to do the best I could and work on things,” Larry said. “I feel strongly we need new
people involved and people who have a common set of goals for the breed.” Larry is not afraid to think outside the box and maximize on opportunities, which includes their meat store, Bar J Artisan Meats, LLC, in Houston. Besides Charolais cattle at Bar J, you will also find Wagyu genetics used to cross with their Charolais cattle to produce meat for the store. “We have some restaurants that also purchase from us, but our main customers are local Houston consumers,” Larry said. “There are not many producers like us in the Houston area and as consumers have become more health conscious, Bar J provides quality beef that tastes¬ good, but also serves as a healthy food source.” Bar J Charolais has become one of the initial participants in the CharAdvantage program and are in the process of becoming certified by IMI Global so their cattle can be source, age and genetic qualified leading to non-hormone treated cattle (NHTC) or verified natural beef (VNB) verified. With this certification it will allow Bar J to put these cattle in the feedlot and export the product internationally. “I hope to continue selling bulls in volume to commercial cattlemen while building a volume in Wagyu and Charolais cross cattle to produce quality meat in our area,” Larry said.

“We had problems with Charolais bulls back then,” he said. To alleviate the problems his dad turned to using black Angus bulls and then kept all the heifers to build his beef herd. “But they’ve corrected all that,” said Teague, giving praise to diligent Charolais breeders for bringing the breed to where it is today. Teague bought his dad’s herd in 1983 and then began adding farms as they became available to bring the current herd to nearly 400 cows. Today, he and two of his sons, Jeffrey and Brian, along with a particularly zealous grandson, nineyear-old Cooper; stay busy in the day-to-day operations. Ronald and Sue, his wife of 53 years, have two additional children, Michael and Lisa, who quickly chip in to help when needed. “We do it all ourselves. We have some hired help, but we pretty much do everything here together as a family,” Teague proudly noted. “Brian does the preg checking with an ultrasound machine and we’ve pretty much learned how to take care of the cattle ourselves over the years. A vet would starve to death if he was waiting on us to call.” “We have eight grandchildren, but Cooper is in the middle of everything. That’s what he studies. He has his own herd and he loves it,” said Ronald, who agreed seeing his sons and grandson take interest in the operation is what makes it all worthwhile. “If it wasn’t for my children there is no way I could handle this stuff now. It’s 70 J U N E/J U L Y 2 0 1 9
gratifying to know there’s someone who wants to carry on the tradition.” In addition to tending the cattle, the Teagues harvest all their own hay. According to Ronald, that adds up to “a minimum of 2,000 to 2,500 4x5 bales; or a maximum of 3,000 to 3,500 when it’s there.” “Words can’t describe how proud I am of the family and where we are today,” said Ronald. “It was great to receive that award, but we were surprised! To receive an award like that gives you a sense of accomplishment. The worst thing was I had to go up in front of all those people to accept it.” Teague was presented with the award during the Carolina Sensation sale held April 13 in Williamston, South Carolina. While at the sale, the Teagues purchased four bulls to bring their current battery of Charolais sires up to 24. Defining a “Top-Notch” Bull Defining a “top-notch” bull for the Teagues includes looking at EPDs, but focusing on a bull’s actual birth weight and growth. Scrotal circumference is also factored in. “We don’t like them at 34, we like them to have a 38 to 42 scrotal at least,” said Teague. “You can take a bull with a large scrotal and they can breed one cow after another.” The Teagues are comfortable using 80 to 100-pound birth weight bulls on their cows, but will look to lighter weight, easy calving bulls to use on replacement heifers.
CHAROLAIS JOURNAL
Having used strictly Charolais bulls for more than 20 years, the family operation has noticed the difference, not only in the pounds of calves they have to market, but in their replacement females as well. “We’ve got every kind. A bunch of different crossbreds.” said Jeffrey in speaking of their cow herd, which is 20 to 25 percent eared and includes many black cows. “One in a while we’ll go buy a good bunch of black cows and then keep those heifers,” Jeffrey explained. “You put a Charolais on a Brangus and you’ve got some stocky, good looking calves. You put a Charolais on a Charbray heifer and you’re gonna wean calves off from 680 to 740 pounds.” “Our heifers will have some ear, some brisket and a little bit of navel and that’s exactly what we want,” said Jeffrey. “Smoky, brownish and some reds once in a while.” “That heifer we raise will calve before she’s even two years old,” added Ronald, “With Brangus heifers you can’t do that. We have to hold them back (to breed) at two years. Cows at Teague Farms are grazed on fescue pastures that include a small amount of orchard grass, and bred to calve in the fall. Calves typically hit the ground around 80 pounds. “If you don’t have something to start with, it’s hard to get to 850-pound calves,” said Ronald. “We keep the top 20 to 25 percent of the heifers and the rest are sent to the feedlot. We have to ship straight loads to make good.”
The first two loads of steers out in 2018 averaged 842 and 838 pounds. The Teagues don’t use creep feed as a rule but will occasionally creep calves on first-calf heifers. Weaning is done by August 15. Calves are then kept in a weaning facility for 30 to 45 days before being shipped to a Kansas feedlot in late September or early October. Selling direct to the feedlot, the Teagues make sure calves are fully vaccinated, started on a 15% medicated feed and conditioned. “We’ll push calves with up to 10 pounds of feed per day,” said Teague. “When they come off the truck they (the feeders) want those calves to go right to the feed bunk.” “We believe in Charolais bulls without a doubt,” concluded Ronald, before excusing himself to help Brian with the hay equipment. “We’re proud of our weights. Word travels fast and everyone knows now how heavy our calves are. We have some of our neighbors who have seen our calves and now they’re buying Charolais bulls. We do this to make a living and we found we can make it the best with Charolais.”

Obituary
Obituary
Funeral services were Sunday at Crestwood Chapel for Mr. William H. “Bill” Boyd, 84, of Gadsden, who died Thursday, April 11, 2019. Bill was preceded in death by son, Stanley; parents, Neal Longshore Boyd, Jessie Lowe Boyd; father and mother-in-law, Clarence “Jake” and Evie Lee Jennings; sister and brother-in-law, Anne and Thornton Finch and special friend, Son Murray, who worked for Bill on the farm. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Shirley Jane Jennings Boyd; daughter, Janet; sons, David, Heath (Rebecca); sister, Betty (Ron) Lankford; grandchildren, Casey Boyd, Joseph (Brittany) Boyd, Hanna (Andrew) Smith and Neal Boyd; great grandchildren, Aubrie Kate, Layla Jae, Ryder Stone and Anna Belle along with many nieces and nephews and many devoted friends. Cap’n Bill, as he was known to so many, graduated from Gadsden High School in 1952, and was awarded a football scholarship to Auburn University. Bill married Shirley Jane, (Jennings) while at Auburn and returned to Gadsden, where he started their farm raising broiler chickens. After one year due to an unstable market, Bill decided to go to work for Allis Chalmers. He later went to work at Republic Steel, where he retired after 40 years. During his time at Republic Steel, he was supervisor of the tractor and machine shops, before becoming general foreman of millwrights at the hot strip mill. Bill was instrumental in developing the lives of many athletes who played at Gaston High School. He did all this while working and raising a family and operating his cattle farm. After retirement, Bill devoted his time to his prize Charolais cattle. He also spent time helping at the local community center in the Gaston community. The family wishes to thank the STICU unit at Huntsville Hospital for the care he received. Special thanks to Donald Sewell and Ricky Frazier for tending to Bill’s cows during his time in the hospital. Pallbearers will be Steve Ashley, Tommy Woodsmall, David Jenkins, Carl Jenkins, Jeff Bellew, Donald Sewell, Ricky Frazier, Larry Guffey, Tim Bickers and Swane Morris. Honorary pallbearers were former players and co-workers. Memorials can be made to American Cancer Society or Turkeytown United Methodist Church. 130 J U N E/J U L Y 2 0 1 9
Curt Clancy, 65 of Halbur, died Sunday, April 21, 2019 at home surrounded by his family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Iowa 4-H Foundation (www. iowa4hfoundation.org) or the Iowa Charolais Breeders Association’s Youth Scholarship program. Born on April 2, 1954 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Curt is the son of Geraldine (Doyen) and the late Leo Clancy. He attended Pomeroy Community School, graduating in 1972 then attending Iowa State University’s Farm Operations program. Following his education, Curt farmed near Pomeroy and served as a 4-H leader in Calhoun County. On November 22, 1980 he was united in marriage to Julie Buelt at St. Augustine Church in Halbur. In 1991, Curt and Julie relocated to Halbur and farmed the Buelt family Century Farm. He served as a director for the Carroll County Cattlemen, Iowa Sheep Association and the Iowa Charolais Breeders Association. Curt also served on the school boards for Holy Trinity and Kuemper Catholic High School. Curt was passionate about raising and marketing purebred Charolais cattle, watching St. Louis Cardinals baseball, and serving as grill-master for the annual family “CyClan” tailgate. He always welcomed a game of cards, or Scrabble, and conversation. As the Dad of three young daughters, Curt would often say “the boys will come.” Later, as Grandpa/Papa to five grandsons, he could often be found at their activities or spending time together on the farm. Curt is survived by his wife Julie Clancy of Halbur; his daughters: Alicia (Adam) Heun of Jefferson, Andrea (Brian) Sullivan of Nashua, Iowa; Alayna (Kenny) Hansen of Templeton. Grandsons Aiden and Connor Sullivan and Brekken, Korden and Holten Hansen. His mother, Geraldine Clancy of Pomeroy, his sisters, Pat Vial of Oregon, Mary Clancy (Larry Pote) of Coon Rapids; his brother Mike Clancy of Minnesota. Brothers- and sisters-in-law: Pat Ortner, of Omaha, Dave (Shannon) Buelt of Indianapolis, IN, Tom (Joyce) Buelt of Omaha, Gary (Jamie) Buelt of Polk City, Nancy (Mark) Schoeberl of Plano, TX; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives. Curt was preceded in death by his father, Leo Clancy; and parents-in-law, Herb and Lucille Buelt.

Value Versatility Profitability “Charolais cattle are extremely valuable in what we do every day. They perform, convert, get large and do well. The packers desire those cattle. When we put Charolais on the show list, there’s usually a lot of aggression, a lot of desire to own them for a couple of reasons. For one, the cutability is amazing. The cattle yield very well. There’s nothing more desirable in the industry than a black-nosed Charolais.” — Todd Sigmon, Manager Dinklage Feedyards, Sidney, Nebraska
