Then, now
commercial-focused tomorrow
and
A lesson in history helps to understand where we have come from, but also gives us the opportunity to reflect on change. History provides context. The Curran and Fischer families have been ranching in Amador and Calaveras Counties for over 150 years. Our roots as commercial cattlemen keep us grounded in the type and kind of cattle we produce and operations we run. Taking care of our resources, working hard and harvesting as many pounds of high quality product have always been the core principles of success in Agriculture. Our strong connection to this region and our foothill communities have honed our focus on the type of cow required to excel at this task.
• Produce the most pounds our environment will support
• Optimize our total cowherd performance through consistency
• Produce profitable, problem-free females that leave a lasting impact for generations
• Use EPDs and Genomics as tools to compliment, not replace, actual production and type in our genetic selection
We have a generational commitment to this lifestyle and have built cowherds that combine these goals, setting the stage for a sustainable future in this business. There is no
greater testimony to longevity than the simple fact that we are still here ranching right alongside you and our children aim to continue.
While we cherish our heritage, we understand and fully accept the responsibility of producing the kind of cattle that position our customers for success in the future. After all, our cowherd today is what yours will look like tomorrow. This offering is the culmination of many years of our breeding programs and an honest commitment to the ranching families that we are humbled to call our family and friends. We sincerely thank you for the opportunity to be your seedstock supplier.
Doing What We say we will...
Welcome, friends and family!
Once again, we come to you blessed and thankful to live the rural American life. Raising livestock is an interesting vocation. It really doesn’t matter where you are from, anywhere in the world, the pattern of husbandry practices, challenges and rewards are very similar to everyone else. This is something we think about often and while some of us may disagree on small things, we can agree that on the big issues, we have a common bond. It is with this premise in mind that we thought it would be interesting to share with you how this sale partnership remains such a positive relationship after 20 years.
Prior to 2007 and before hosting a production sale, the Circle and Bruin Ranches would approach each fall sale season the same. Part of each set of bulls would be on test at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, part on test at Snyders in Nevada and the balance were offered through consignment sales or by private treaty throughout the west. Each operation focused on quality over quantity in both customer relationships and numbers of bulls produced. The relationship between the Currans and Fischers grew to bull sale partners at Cal Poly, where Joe and Abbee were students among others sharing management responsibilities of the bulls on test. In 2007 the need for a production sale to handle the volume of bulls and timing of the two programs aligned.
While we prefer cattle that function the same and have almost mirror image breeding objectives, what brings us closer than anything are the values we share. The phrase, “do what you say you will,” has been a guiding principle of this bull sale, this partnership and our friendship. Through a collection of discussions and scenarios we have gone through together, we have further solidified our commitment to the core values and principles we were raised with. Some people call these values “code of the west” or “a world view.” Whatever phrase you use to describe these qualities, they are a bond that connects us all. Rest assured, you can be certain that when you do business with us, we will always “do what we say we will.”
We thank you for the commitment to our program, we thank you for the friendship and most of all, we thank you for staying committed to this lifestyle and business. Please join us to celebrate our 18th production sale at the Circle Ranch headquarters on the fourth Thursday of September.

Improved Buying Confidence with Greater Genomic ASSURANCE
Access to more and better information has always been key to making wise decisions. The evolution and improvement of genetic evaluation tools too has given us an ever-clearer picture of the true genetic makeup of cattle and thus a better view of the value proposition. RightMate, powered by Top Genomics LLC is taking the evaluation of genetics and genomics one giant step further. By combining speci c genomic information with the long-proven value of EPDs, this new advancement in technology improves our depth and precision when evaluating the actual ability to transmit value and pro t.
The 3 Accreditation Logos below are designed to simplify bull selection and improve buyer con dence by more accurately describing the genetics o ered and by reducing risk. What this means to you as a customer is a much greater assurance that you are getting both what you want and need from the genetics you purchase. What it means to your seedstock provider is access to RightMate technology that simply sets them apart from the rest of the industry.
ACCREDITED
GENOMIC PLUS – For the majority of producers who simply need consistent and balanced genetic improvement, without genomic setbacks, G+ Accredited bulls should be on your list for premium purchase. These sires will absolutely move you forward for both cost reduction and income producing traits and substantially reduce risk when compared to all other evaluation programs. It’s simple, the right genes are in these bulls to help secure a pro table future and the they have great EPDs to match!
ACCREDITED CALVING EASE – Simply nd bulls with the ACE logo for third party Accredited, secure Calving Ease bulls. Though we have had tools in the past to assist in choosing heifer bulls, we’ve never had one nearly this e ective. The reduced risk that comes with this genomic certi cation will simply make your decisions easier and your heifer calving season more successful. Purchase special purpose ACE bulls with con dence. They will deliver consistent and predictable calving ease.
ACCREDITED TERMINAL MATE – Just like an ATM machine makes it simpler to access your cash, the ATM Logo highlights bulls accredited to generate extra cash income as soon as your next calf crop! These bulls are meant speci cally to use only on mature cows and for the purpose of adding performance, pay weight and end product value to market.
Sierra Valley Ranching In the
This is our tenth-year summering cattle in Sierra Valley. Sierra County, with a population of 3000, is the summer home to over 10,000 mother cows. With an elevation of 5000 feet, it’s the perfect climate for fall calving cows and we AI breed everything we send there including our replacement heifers.
Use your smart phone’s camera app to scan this QR code for a message from Tim.
For generations, environmental adaptability has been and continues to be one of the most important breeding goals at Circle Ranch. Cows should work for their owners, not the other way around. We run our cows in a similar fashion to the majority of our customers to help ensure they will work in a variety of environments and promote profitability. That, too, is part of the reason we harness the power of heterosis to create a more durable genetic product capable of breeding and lasting longer regardless of the environmental challenges posed. We absolutely have a herd target for mature size that we think best fits the majority of our customers and the larger beef industry. The lions share of our bulls hit that target dead center and many of our customers prefer them. On the edges, however, you will find genetics here that can produce power house performance for higher resource situations as well as some lines created to minimize maintenance requirements for low-input regions.

When we toured the Schlenkers farm in 2022, our cooperator, Sam Collier, Shasta View Genetics, told us Sweet Sixteen was a must see. She was in the same pen as her mother and both had brand new babies at their side and I’m still not sure which is the better cow physically, but the EPD profile of Sweet Sixteen is exactly where we want to be. Excellent calving ease direct, maternal calving ease, stayability, marbling and ribeye. Equally important to us is that her yearling weight EPD is breed average, and with our focus on keeping mature cow weight in check, that was the final piece that convinced us we needed those genetics. We flushed her to Circle The Bases D384, who is the most influential sire today here at Circle Ranch. The flush brothers sell as Lots 8 to 16, co-owned with Shasta View Genetics.

CLARITY IS CASH
Today’s industry pays big for heavy fat steers, but your pocketbook demands smaller cows. What to do?
The answer is clear, dependable data and the courage to bypass traditional straightbreeding.
Simmental-influenced cows are an average 74 lb. lighter at maturity than Angus-sired counterparts.a
Meanwhile, packers pay $20 to $34 more for SimAngusTM and Simmental-sired steers than English-sired calves.b
Finally, raise efficient cows and high-performance calves. The proof is in the data – and the cash.

Maternal or Terminal? That is the question.
We’ll choose maternal every time. Maternal is a collection of traits that are hard to find, but equally hard to ranch without.
Most ranchers, we included, don’t fully appreciate those traits until they’re gone. Maternal traits must be intentionally selected for and proven out across generations. Culling into the right ones is a strategy some use but is not a sound breeding objective nor is it financially sustainable. Maternal traits must be intentionally selected from proper parent stock through the eye of a stockman and production data. There are no numerical values to quantify the term. Instead, the proof is the action within environment and experienced
Maternal is more than calving ease, more than calf vigor. It encompasses those traits, for sure, but also extends to the way in which cows optimize production within their environment. Here at Bruin and Circle Ranches the breeding goal is to continue to select and breed more of the kind that keep you in business. YOU know the right kind; YOU and YOUR environment have been selecting for her your entire career. These maternal traits need time, experience and keen observation to be implemented within a breeding program. This is why by the time a sire has proven to add maternal merit to a cowherd, he’s often an old bull with seemingly outdated EPDs.
A VISION FOR THE FUTURE. The cow that is maternally superior to all others and navigates her environment with elegance, grace and profitability. She effortlessly converts the resources available into profit for the producer. She’ll last a long time. She’ll cause very few problems and for most of her life should go unnoticed in a crowd of others just like her. Her excellence isn’t the outlier, it’s the standard. Plenty of marketing firms have taken the opportunity to describe maternal where the narrative fits adding value to their herds, but few have truly articulated the essence of what the word maternal means when put into practice.

feeding Our bulls at home
We continue to develop our bulls at home and feel it is one of the STRONGEST PARTS of our program.
Feeding our bulls in five acre lots filled with Oak trees gives them PLENTY OF ROOM to keep loose jointed and limber and READY FOR TURN OUT.
You won’t see eye-popping yearling weights with our bulls, but what you will see are bulls that are ATHLETIC and will not lose as much weight during the breeding season.

FROM OUR FAMILY To Yours
An operation of this scope is impossible without help from our community; thank you to our parents at the AM Ranch for doing an outstanding job raising our Embryo calves. Our boys, Bennett and Myles have filled the roles traditionally occupied by a third employee with enthusiasm and outstanding work ethic. Wyatt’s loyalty and ability to analyze cattle is the best we have had, and we have reaped the benefit of the support and love of his entire family. Thank you, you have all stepped up when we need you the most, your passion for this program is essential for its success.
Bruin Fellow sons
Fellow has continued to jump through all the hoops by producing sons that have highlighted the sale season and the type of females the west commands. Their excellent motherly instinct and ideal foot shape has us going back to Fellow as a sire for the fifth year. His broody females combine perfect udders and teat size with above average milk. We confidently believe Fellow’s story in the Angus breed is just beginning. The bulls are the front pasture type, commanding attention with their body length, extension,

HEIFER BULL CANDIDATE. An exciting way to lead off this Fellow Sire group. This maternal brother to Bruin Journeyman 1730, our lead off bull in 2022 and sire of lots 122-127 is complete from all angles. We see Pathway as a potential large scale commercial heifer project bull, his pedigree reads Bruin through and through. His dam is one of the oldest Torque daughters on the ranch and continues to produce quality every year. At 7 years old she maintains a gorgeous udder with perfect teat size.

Deep, long and complete sum up my notes on 3787. He is a maternal brother to one of the very top Barricades we sold last year. His ultra-feminine dam is a different twist to the Blackbird line. 7277 is as productive as we can make one. She is heavy milking, big bodied, long and pretty fronted and always brings home a good one.
Bruin 8224 Fellow 3790
An opportunity to own the full brother to the popular lot 3 in last year’s sale. This bull is built with the same structure and skeletal outline as his brother. My notes say long, deep and complete. His mother is a larger scaled cow with stretch, performance and muscle, expect more growth out of this bull than numbers suggest.

A bull I would call right on the edge of a calving ease prospect. If you are confident in the size and maternal calving ease of the heifers, I would have no problem using him. This more moderately statured bull is complete in all his angles and type. His dam is one of the top young Rainfall daughters and a personal favorite of the Princess line. Keep every daughter you can out of this bull.

Sitz Milestone 636H • Sire of Lots 105-114
We are always on the search for a bull with added outcross traits but from a cow that protects the maternal value we have worked so hard to breed into our herd. Milestone earned a spot in our AI roster due to his outstanding mother. At 11 years old, she still maintains 104 nursing ratio with a calving interval of 363 days. Her female line traces back directly to the immortal Everela Entense 1905. The sires in the maternal pedigree stack of Milestone include some of the most highly proven and productive cow makers of the breed in the past 15 years. These sons are rugged, powerful and high growth.

As a calf 3741 received as much attention as any. On the side of his dam, the two represented one of the most ideal pairs we have bred. This bull is banged up at the time of footnotes, we are hopeful he makes a full recovery by sale day.

Logo 8148 was an outcross calving ease specialist that we sampled this year. These calves were born light and vigorous, something we really value calving on these hot fall days. An 11-year-old Pathfinder dam is a bonus with 8148. Her production record is impeccable, posting progeny averages of 98 BW and 107 WW. Longevity and fertility must be bred and selected for; 8148 sons should do a nice job making daughters that last.

HEIFER BULL CANDIDATE. One of the most complete commercial heifer project bulls in the sale. His flexible pedigree and unique data make him an ideal bull to use on most popular pedigrees of today. As an individual he is complete and faultfree. His dam is one of my favorite young cows, end of discussion.
The most unique thing we do. . .
The most unique thing we do is breed cattle to excel right here. In this latitude, in this rangeland, this foothill Oak Savannah landscape - the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains - that we’re blessed to graze. Raising cattle that are adapted to the significant constraints of this semi-desert, wildly rugged environment and tested inside of this microclimate has produced a great deal of customer satisfaction throughout the arid west and beyond.
Building a cow that is resilient and works with Mother Nature is quite a task. The best way to achieve it is to watch the ones that are doing it and make more of them.
It has always been our goal to challenge cattle beyond what they’ll be challenged when they go into the commercial sector. When customers use our cattle that have been born, raised, bred to thrive here, they usually go on to do very well out in other environments.
We need to have performance, absolutely, but bulls are the by-product of what we do best: raising resilient, productive and profitable mother cows. We focus everything on the mother cow, her cost of production and cull rate. Working on that end of the balance sheet has proven to be more fruitful for us than the other.

Journeyman was the highlight and high seller of our 2022 sale going to Curtis Vanderveen in Kansas and TK Angus in Nebraska. His first calf crop has defied all typical measures of performance, being light at birth and maintaining explosive growth. The bulls are noticeably outpacing many of their pen mates for growth and seem to be exceptionally docile. The replacement heifers sired by Journeyman display exceptional body depth, length and femininity, a combination that is difficult to breed into cattle.

Anthem sons
SAV Anthem 0042 • Sire of Lots 128-137
Anthem is an easy choice when considering his own traditional Angus type, perfect head, easy fleshing body shape and docility. The dam to Anthem owns one of the most impressive resumes in the breed, maintaining Pathfinder status with a 107 Nursing ratio. Her flawless body shape, hoof quality, udder structure and teat placement make her one of the most sought-after cows in the breed. These Anthem sons are out of some of our very best daughters of Torque, Prosperity and more and should leave outstanding daughters in any progressively maternal operation.

The final full brother in blood off a trio of herd building, excellent type bulls. If you hope to retain replacement heifers, we strongly recommend looking right in this section of the book. While trailing cows to the corral horseback on weaning day, he was in the back of the bunch and noticeably easy going. His excellent type is matched by expressive muscle through his back and hip.

Rainfall sons
SAV Rainfall 6846 • Sire of Lots 138-146
This multi-trait breed leader has a balanced set of proven EPDs and has proven through nursing daughters to bring value to the Angus population. Rainfall represents the largest number of daughters of one sire group in the Bruin herd. His daughters are consistently easy fleshing, feminine fronted and milk perfectly for our environment. He has complemented our Traveler lines incredibly well and while we have offered three years worth of his sons, we have more Rainfall babies on the ground this fall. Quality never goes out of style and predictably proven brings more consistent value to our operations than potential.

A heifer bull candidate for larger framed heifers or cattle without extreme birth in the pedigree. This bull is a maternal brother to last year’s sale attraction Bruin Kirkwood 2716. This bull is moderate in stature, extremely deep bodied and densely made. His pedigree is loaded with cows who have done a nice job here; being easy fleshing and problem free. He should make daughters much the same.
Bruin 6846 Rainfall 3762
This pair of moderate and thick Rainfall sons are full of breed character and type. Both cows are on the smaller end of our herd in terms of size but excel at pounds weaned per pound of body weight. Bruin Torque 5261
Sire of Lots 147-149
Torque has become a household name in the Angus business as a sire of outstanding daughters. In his first year with a significant number of daughters to qualify, he earned Elite Pathfinder Status through the American Angus Association. Torque’s influence can be found throughout our pedigrees and has proved to be a foundation type breeding piece, stamping his influence with the qualities we expect of a mother cow on rangeland. There are only three opportunities to purchase a son this year, but we feel each carries a seedstock level of quality for a potential herd sire.

Prosperity has surfaced as a dominant pathfinder sire through actual data by producing daughters and real proof. In 2016 alone, we were able to evaluate nearly 1200 sons and daughters. The sons are fantastic in their foot shape and heal depth, long spined and big topped. The daughters are hardworking females with pathfinder type milking ability, excellent fertility, and nice dispositions. In his threegeneration pedigree, Prosperity is one of the few animals to be found in the entire Angus population with eleven out of fourteen pathfinder ancestors. Through his daughters, granddaughters and sons, Prosperity is one of the most influential sires in our herd.

With enough progeny in production across multiple environments, management, and breeds it’s safe to classify Envy as a changer bull. His first daughters are just what we had hoped, practically sized, excellent uddered and maintain their flesh in the most challenging conditions. Striking type on this younger Inheritance son. Inheritance was our pick of the flush brothers to Bruin Jagger 1777. He is masculine, thick and has extreme fleshing ease. This son of 7221 is another opportunity to bring changer level maternal and rangeland adaptability into your program. 7221 has dominated matings and achieved elite Pathfinder status. A proven, productive, practical cow with a son of exceptional upside.

The value point of the sale, we will see who reads what I write. This bull is plain on paper and assembles numbers that seem out of date. Rest assured; this bull is out of one of the best Torque daughters on the ranch. 8261 never fails at making females that excel in our range. She’s not a small cow, but maintains her flesh, milks well and sports a perfect udder. There is tremendous value in retaining females out of this bull.

In the younger bull category, 3811 is a nice fronted, attractive patterned bull. His young Rainfall dam is a model cow with size, length and femininity. 0114 is out of a ¾ sister to Bruin Uproar 0070, the first bull from our program to hit Angus center stage. The female side of these Inheritance sons shows a lot of promise for those hoping to keep replacement females. 157

HEIFER BULL CANDIDATE. One of the best we will offer. A Bruin pedigree through and through, bred for consistency and the ability to optimize the forage and management cycles of California rangeland. This bull has been a favorite for a long time and his young dam is nearly ideal. 1834 raised the high indexing bull at weaning with this son and backed up almost a month calving with the AI group. She does all this while maintaining one of the lightest actual mature weights in our herd. This cow is exactly what we breed for.

HEIFER BULL CANDIDATE. The field notes on this bull read “real complete and solid bull.” Simply put, the Irreplaceable calves as a sire group impressed us as much as any for their ability to be born light out of heifers, grow fast and look good while doing it. 3753’s Rainfall dam is gorgeous, just like the rest of her sisters.

A blast from the past. This bull has 2 full sisters in blood that are everything we breed for in the replacement pen. When you go back and use these matings, most times the hope is for females. This bull presents an incredible opportunity for someone seeking to find time tested maternal quality. When we hear “All I want is the cows I had 20-30 years ago,” this pedigree is exactly that!! Buy with confidence in the maternal predictability. 163
