VIEWPOINT

CHAROLAIS The Market Seldom Makes a Mistake

Charolais consistently produce

O

ne marketing strategist defines the importance of supply and demand as, “Supply and demand are one of the most fundamental concepts of economics working as the backbone of a market economy. The concept of demand can be defined as the number of products or services as desired by buyers in the market. The quantity demanded is the amount of a product that the customers are willing to buy at a certain price and the relationship between price and quantity demanded by the customers is known as the demand relationship.” Anyone engaged in beef production for any length of time has experienced the cyclical nature of the market. Some years demand is stronger than others. Demand for agricultural products is, arguably, significantly driven by weather and the overall economy. Other forces beyond our control that influence our market are geo-politics

by supply and demand, was 2015 when 4,956 Charolais bulls averaged more than $6,600. The realists among us recognized 2015 for what it was, an anomaly precipitated by incredible demand. One of the most interesting tidbits of information documented in the sale average summary is the strength, year over year, for Charolais bulls. From 2014 through 2018, 24,230 bulls were sold in sales reported to the Charolais Journal and totaled $126.18 million for a five-year average of more than $5,207. “The quantity demanded is the amount of a product that the customers are willing to buy at a certain price and the relationship between price and quantity demanded by the customers is known as the demand relationship.” The consistent demand for Charolais genetics and Charolais bulls is no accident. Marketing summaries are indicative of marketing

At the end of the day, the foundation of our markets still relies on the quality of the product, the supply and, unique to the beef business, the integrity of the people behind the product. such as trade and global conflict. More specific to beef production today in our own back yard is the reality of the multiple methods to measure or quantify quality. The AICA staff recently compiled the sales data for Charolais bulls and females over the past decade. The numbers are reflective of the economic cycle and demand that follows. But, more importantly, the data illustrates the steady upward trend of the value of Charolais bulls to the beef cattle business. In 2018, 4,945 bulls sold for an average of $4,692 per head, which was more than $200 per head increase from 2017 on 476 more bulls. The difference in gross sales from 2017 to 2018 resulted in an increase of more than $3.15 million in the seller’s pockets. In comparing 2008 to 2018 sales, the price paid for Charolais bulls increased 175%. The sale averages also support an interesting marketing dynamic. The year 2015 was a very good year for most everyone in the seedstock business. The industry was beginning to recover from a serious drought that, over several years, reduced the nation’s cow herd inventory to one of the lowest in modern beef industry history. Late in 2014 and into early 2015, adequate moisture accelerated pasture and forage recovery and cow-calf producers were motivated to begin rebuilding their herds. The strongest market, determined

trends and most certainly demand for a product. Quite possibly the greatest indicator of the foundation for Charolais market demand lies in the genetic and phenotypic trend tables found on the website at www.CharolaisUSA.com. Comparing the same decade, 2008 to 2018, Charolais average yearling weight EPDs increased 45 pounds, increased weaning weight EPDs more than 15 pounds, all while reducing birth weight EPDs. The development of the Terminal Sire Index (TSI) provided seedstock and commercial producers using registered Charolais bulls, with a tool to identify the most profitable sires unique to a specific operation. TSI is a “connect the dots” tool weighted toward carcass value and retained ownership. The market seldom makes a mistake. At times, the cattle markets react much like a whiplash, but modest recovery almost always follows absent a catastrophic event. At the end of the day, the foundation of our markets still relies on the quality of the product, the supply and, unique to the beef business, the integrity of the people behind the product. We’re more than fortunate to be able to document the fact that Charolais cattle and the folks behind the product have consistently produced a “product that customers are willing to buy at a certain price” for three-quarters of a century.

H

i everyone! I’m Trisha Dybdal and I am your Area 2 Director. I grew up in the rural area near Newcastle, Nebraska. I was born and raised on a family farm and ranch with a Charolais and commercial herd. This fall I will be attending the University of Nebraska Lincoln to major in Agricultural Marketing/ Communications. Representing the AIJCA the past two years has been a great honor and privilege. I am excited for Junior National this year down in Fort Worth.

Q: Who got you involved in the Charolais breed? A: My family got me involved in the Charolais breed.

I was enough years behind Taylor and Ty that I was always the tag-along little sister. But I was always paying attention and have loved the Charolais breed from day one. My herd grows more each year.

Q: What is your favorite thing about being on the Junior Board?

Q: What is your favorite thing about spring? A: My favorite thing about being on the Junior Board A: My favorite thing about spring is the warm weather would be being a mentor to younger members. I have

It’s fun to watch them explore the Ty was elected to the Board, I especially got excited to pastures and grow in the summer sun. be on the Junior Board. It is an honor I try not to take lightly. Q: What are you looking forward to in college? A: I am super excited for college next year. One thing Q: What is your favorite memory of showing?

that I am looking forward to is being able to meet many A: My favorite memory of showing would be winning new people and make new friends. the FFA Showmanship Contest at the Nebraska State Fair as a freshman. I enjoy showmanship because it is based upon A: In 10 years, I plan to be working as an advocate for you and your calf not just on the quality of an animal. the agricultural world. I also plan on having expanded my herd with improved the genetics.

Q: What is your favorite thing about Junior

National?

A:

My favorite part of Junior National is seeing friends again that I made the year’s past and being able to mentor younger members. But of course my overall favorite part is always the cook-off contest. I am looking forward to another competitive year. I already have several Champion ideas in mind!

Extended-Release Injectable Parasiticide 5% Sterile Solution NADA 141-327, Approved by FDA for subcutaneous injection For the Treatment and Control of Internal and External Parasites of Cattle on Pasture with Persistent Effectiveness CAUTION: Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. INDICATIONS FOR USE LONGRANGE, when administered at the recommended dose volume of 1 mL per 110 lb (50 kg) body weight, is effective in the treatment and control of 20 species and stages of internal and external parasites of cattle:

Gastrointestinal Roundworms Bunostomum phlebotomum Cooperia oncophora Cooperia punctata Haemonchus placei Oesophagostomum radiatum Ostertagia lyrata Ostertagia ostertagi Trichostrongylus axei Lungworms Dictyocaulus viviparus

Durations of Persistent Effectiveness 150 days 100 days 100 days 120 days 120 days 120 days 120 days 100 days 150 days

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin) should be given only by subcutaneous injection in front of the shoulder at the recommended dosage level of 1 mg eprinomectin per kg body weight (1 mL per 110 lb body weight). WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS Withdrawal Periods and Residue Warnings Animals intended for human consumption must not be slaughtered within 48 days of the last treatment. This drug product is not approved for use in female dairy cattle 20 months of age or older, including dry dairy cows. Use in these cattle may cause drug residues in milk and/or in calves born to these cows. A withdrawal period has not been established for pre-ruminating calves. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal. Animal Safety Warnings and Precautions The product is likely to cause tissue damage at the site of injection, including possible granulomas and necrosis. These reactions have disappeared without treatment. Local tissue reaction may result in trim loss of edible tissue at slaughter. Observe cattle for injection site reactions. If injection site reactions are suspected, consult your veterinarian. This product is not for intravenous or intramuscular use. Protect product from light. LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin) has been developed specifically for use in cattle only. This product should not be used in other animal species. When to Treat Cattle with Grubs LONGRANGE effectively controls all stages of cattle grubs. However, proper timing of treatment is important. For the most effective results, cattle should be treated as soon as possible after the end of the heel fly (warble fly) season. Environmental Hazards Not for use in cattle managed in feedlots or under intensive rotational grazing because the environmental impact has not been evaluated for these scenarios. Other Warnings: Underdosing and/or subtherapeutic concentrations of extendedrelease anthelmintic products may encourage the development of parasite resistance. It is recommended that parasite resistance be monitored following the use of any anthelmintic with the use of a fecal egg count reduction test program. TARGET ANIMAL SAFETY Clinical studies have demonstrated the wide margin of safety of LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin). Overdosing at 3 to 5 times the recommended dose resulted in a statistically significant reduction in average weight gain when compared to the group tested at label dose. Treatment-related lesions observed in most cattle administered the product included swelling, hyperemia, or necrosis in the subcutaneous tissue of the skin. The administration of LONGRANGE at 3 times the recommended therapeutic dose had no adverse reproductive effects on beef cows at all stages of breeding or pregnancy or on their calves. Not for use in bulls, as reproductive safety testing has not been conducted in males intended for breeding or actively breeding. Not for use in calves less than 3 months of age because safety testing has not been conducted in calves less than 3 months of age. GENERATIONS. That’s Why You Need LongRange®(eprinomectin) For Up To 150 Days Of Parasite Control.1 Bloodlines. You’re as proud of yours as you are of theirs. But if you used a short-term dewormer like Cydectin® (moxidectin) or Dectomax® (doramectin), you may not have been doing your genetics justice. That’s because your cows and heifers were probably reinfected with parasites just halfway through the grazing season – right when they need to gain weight to breed back and give milk.

Only LONGRANGE delivers true season-long control.1

A special thank you to the Charolais staff in helping me gain knowledge of the Charolais breed, in order to serve our members. It has been a great ride the last 19 years. This deep bodied, powerful bull has developed into a tremendous herd sire for both Wright Charolais & Greer Charolais. He is one of the very best Ledger sons in the country and his dam JWK Clarice J139 has claimed her place as one of the premier donors of the breed. Endorsement is proving that he can perform in the ring, as well as in the pasture. In 2016, he was a member of the Grand Champion Pen of 3 Bulls at the National Western Stock Show as a yearling. Endorsement sired WC Qualified 8248 P, the highest marbling bull on record at Wright Charolais. His first set of daughters are in production, and surpassing all expectations. Endorsement’s female progeny have beautiful, level udders, perfect conformation, and quiet disposition. These females are exceptional at balancing the power of Endorsement, while maintaining a high level of femininity Call today to get these genetics working in your herd!
