T

he fall sale season is officially here and it looks to be one for the record books! Whether you are a large or small breeder there are ACA sponsored events that you can participate in to help market your cattle and promote your program. The ACA National Sale Louisville, Kentucky The national sale is held annually in conjunction with the North American Livestock Exposition. This is a fantastic place to market Chianina open females as well as select bred females and promotional type sires. Highlights from last year’s sale include a $30,000 Chiangus female sold by Higgins Farms that was recently named Reserve Grand Champion at Jr. Nationals as well as an $11,000 Chiangus female sold by Gordon & Anne Patton Schubert. Please find the entry form on the Chianina website. The Hybrid Advantage Bull & Female Sale - Denver, Colorado This particular sale is held annually in the “yards” and is one of the heaviest attended sales at the National Western. Last year’s high selling lot was a Chimaine female from Winegardner Show Cattle selling for $15,000. This year the NWSS will also host the very first Jr. Female show on the “hill”. We

Page 10 | Chianina Journal | October/November 2013

are excited to have another national event for our youth. To find information about this sale please visit the Chianina website or find it in this issue. Ohio & Iowa Beef Expo Chi Sales State beef expo sales are a tremendous way to market your bulls and younger open females. This year the ACA will manage both the “Chi Connection” at the Ohio Beef Expo as well as the Chianina sale at the Iowa Beef Expo. Information and entry information will be available this fall on the Chi website. Like I said at the start of this letter, the sale season is upon us. Shortly after I’m done writing this I will be heading back on the road to make more herd visits and the start the fall sale season at Wilson Cattle Co. on September the 8th. I look forward to visiting with all of you at various sales this fall (find a list of sales in this issue) and of course in Louisville at our national event. As always, if I can be of any help when it comes to finding cattle for you or selling cattle for you please give me a call or shoot me an email. ©ACA

ello Fellow Chi Enthusiast: It is definitely turning fall as by the time you read this a lot of the spring born calves will be off the cows and being conditioned for the feedlots or headed to the show barn. It is a great time of year Mother-Nature has blessed us with to gather a harvest and prepare for the future. Preparing for the future is really what we need to focus on. I know the daily routine is paramount, but give some extra thought to preparing yourself to meet challenges that will need to be addressed and overcome to prosper and grow. The ACA has several challenges but also opportunities ahead of it as we have had some decline in registrations (revenue) and staff turnover. I assure you, the ACA Board of Directors, volunteers, and the dedicated ACA staff are doing their part to facilitate the growth and financial health of the ACA. Preparing for the future was never more apparent than at the 2013 NJHS in Grand Island, NE this summer. This had to be one of the best run, nicest facilities, and overall successful events in the NJHS history. The volunteers and Youth Directors did an outstanding job co-mingling both breeds’ youth to allow them to have a great experience while in Nebraska. Every member needs to acknowledge this group for their preparation and execution of this enormously successful event. THANK YOU! The junior members in attendance learned many life skills and more importantly forged many friendships that will help them prepare for the future. Congratulations to all.

Page 12 | Chianina Journal | October/November 2013

As we move on, one of the things to prepare for is the 2014 NJHS to be held in Louisville, KY next summer. Again the ACA and AMAA will combine efforts for their youth and added to this mix is the Shorthorn Jr. Show. Please make plans to attend and support these programs and make it a great event for all these young people. If you have not already read about the 2013 NJHS show in the August ACJ then please use our web site at www. chicattle.org and enjoy. Next, most of us are looking forward to our ACA National Sale at Louisville in November along with the ACA National Shows and of course the Jr. Shows on Sunday. Please contact Tyler Humphrey with any questions on the National Sale and be in attendance to show your support to the consignors. I have rambled on, but I wish to thank the ACA membership, ACA staff, and most of all, the present and past Board Members I have been honored to work with these past six years for allowing me to serve the ACA. Prepare for a bright future, accept the challenges, and grow together with friends and the ACA family. I feel I am a better person today for this experience and will continue to give my full support to the ACA. Lastly, I wish to thank my wife, Becky, for all support and continued encouragement while I served on the Board of Directors. We will both hope to see you all at the next ACA event preparing for the future. Sincerely your friends, Rob and Becky Sheets ©ACA

What is in Store for Your Business? Tyler Melroe, Chianina Member and owner of Melroe Farms

C

hallenges are not always negative things. Challenges have bred innovation for thousands of years and will continue in the future. Take for example the issue of high cost feedstuffs. I’ve read Shorthorn World articles from the 1950’s emphasizing that challenge, not different than today’s industry publications. We see what is in front of us, but in a commodity business we must continue to improve and take advantage of opportunities as they present themselves. The business that we are in is rapidly evolving and it can leave someone in the dust in a hurry if they aren’t aware to what is happening. While our traditional challenges will remain as competition for our resources increase, new ones will certainly present themselves. The World is Flat No Christopher Columbus was not wrong, the world is still round, but our ability to communicate instantly or travel anywhere in a day has made what we do here international news in seconds. Where am I going with this? Beef is a global business. We are subject now, more than ever before, to the highs and lows our competitors experience. Obviously what happens in Brazil or Australia may impact our product’s value, or a drought somewhere else on the globe might dramatically increase your input costs. Being prepared for the 21st century does not mean getting all of your information from the fellas at the coffee shop. You need to be

connected to world if you want to remain competitive. That either means getting familiar with your phones capability, your computer, or at least working with someone you trust that is connected. It is not a “you should thing”; it is a necessity for long-term business planning. Along these lines, producers are subject to more scrutiny than ever before. There are only two things we can do to protect ourselves from this: 1- Be responsible, treat animals properly, and run your operation like someone is videoing you doing it; and 2- be an advocate for your industry, your breed, and your operation. The Ruminant Advantage As we look back, historically the ruminant has faced virtually no competition for highly fibrous feedstuffs. Today, the competition is becoming fierce. First, the land that we had always assumed was only fit for cattle has a new customer, the corn farmer. We can bitterly resent the landlord or producer who has converted this poor quality piece of ground into a cash crop producer, or find ways to make it fit in our system. Grazing or harvesting residues has become standard operating procedure in competitive operations. Perhaps your opportunity lies in agronomic and nutritional benefits of double cropping. The second, and most concerning to me, is the potential competition next generation biofuels present. Remember those residues we used in the previous example, well if there

was a cellulosic ethanol plant in your neighborhood you will be bidding against this outsider for them. There is still comfort in the fact that they cannot bring their factory to the feedstuff, we can. World Population The world population is growing exponentially. Along with this growth comes more people willing to consume, able to afford, and craving the product you produce. Niche markets provide product for consumers who may not otherwise eat beef, certainly noble endeavors. Yet these methods will not feed the masses. I find it hard to believe that people criticize the work of people like Dr. Norman Borlaug, who worked to improve yields by improving the genetic make up of grains. He literally saved millions, if not billions, of people from starvation. Water and food will continue to be valuable resources, and no matter what critics say – you as producers are part of the solution, not part of the problem. Whose Job Is It? As we think about the potential that still exists for our business and certainly the threats that persist and pop up, the most important point is who will do it? Our biggest threat to our national cowherd has not been $7.00 corn, but the possibility of shedding the responsibility of caring for a living thing 365 days a year. If you are up to the challenge, and committed to finding new opportunities for your herd, this is all just coffee shop talk. ©ACA

AJCA updAtes

AJCA Board of Directors Executive Committee

A letter from the board...

W

ow, where has the summer gone? It seems like yesterday I was finishing up my finals here at Iowa State University, and now I start classes for my junior year on August 26th. Between my internship, Jr. Nationals, county fair and state fair, this summer just flew by. They say times flies when you’re having fun, especially when you find something that you’re passionate about. This summer I had the opportunity to work for Tyson Fresh Meats Inc., a division of Tyson Foods Inc., in their Waterloo, IA pork complex. Going into my internship as a quality assurance intern I didn’t know quite what to expect. All I knew was that I was going to help produce a safe, wholesome pork product for consumers. After getting the chance to meet some amazing people I found my passion. I now have found that I belong in the meat production industry. Aside from a cattle show, I have never felt more at home anywhere. The atmosphere within the plant was one that was definitely unique, but was one that I enjoyed. Now is where I turn the challenge over our association’s great youth. I challenge each and every one of you to find something that you are truly passionate about doing. While your passion may change as you get older, ALWAYS do what you love to do. Once you find your passion in life, it will give you a different outlook on the rest of life. As members of the agricultural community I hope we are all passionate about agriculture. So

if you have been blessed with the passion for speaking in front of groups of people, I challenge you to use that passion to inform others in our society about how great our agricultural society is. Today’s society is two or three generations removed from agriculture and doesn’t know where their food comes from. Many people today don’t trust modern agricultural practices and this is a great sorrow. As the future of our industry we have to speak up about what we do and why we do it. As advocates, learn about the other aspects of modern agriculture as to broaden your knowledge. If you’re a cattle producer, learn about gestation stalls and their importance. To any juniors reading this who are enrolled in college, if you’re not already doing internships, I highly advise doing so. Not only do employers take note of internships on your resume, they also get you hands on experience. That experience will allow you to know if you want that career choice and if it’s something that you’re passionate about doing daily. In my scenario, I didn’t find a job, I found a way of life that wanted to wake up and do every day. Once again I challenge everybody to find something that they are passionate about doing because this life is too short not too. Good luck to everybody at the fall shows this year; see y’all in Louisville at the North American International Livestock Exposition. Don’t forget entries are due October 1, 2013. S

ummer has come to an end and harvest is approaching quickly. That means one thing…Louisville is right around the corner. I hope everyone is making plans to attend the N.A.I.L.E. The ACA has been working very hard to make this an outstanding event. Ladies, I hope you are all planning on attending our Ladies Luncheon. The “Come As You Are Luncheon” will be on Tuesday, November 19 at 11:30 am. This will be our annual meeting and membership drive, along with elections. We need to get as many ladies as we can involved, so please try and stop by. If you do plan to attend, please remember to bring a small gift for our gift exchange. We always have a great time and it’s nice to get away from the barn for a little while. Also, in this issue are the guidelines for Chi Lady of the Year. We wanted to give more women the opportunity to be nominated even if they cannot make it to Louisville. The Chi Lady of the Year is a lady who has been active in Chi Cattle, works with the

youth and is involved in her community. Please remember whoever is nominated does not have to be present at Louisville. Please email your nominations to jessicacheesman@ ymail.com before November 1, 2013. The Silent Auction is our only fund raiser for the year, so please stop by the booth and see all the items up for bids. Last year we had a tremendous turnout and I am hoping we have an even bigger auction this year. All proceeds from the Silent Auction will go towards funding the Queen throughout the year. I am sure there will be something that you cannot live without! I look forward to seeing you all in a few weeks at Louisville! ©ACA

ATTENTION: Chi Ladies or Men The Chianina Ladies Auxiliary is looking for outstanding Chi Ladies in your area. Each year at Louisville the Ladies Auxiliary selects an outstanding Lady who has been active in the Chi breed, works with youth and is active in her community. We know that not everyone travels to the National Show in Louisville in November, so we would like to have nominations for ladies that work hard in their communities, that you feel deserve this award of Chi Lady of the Year.

All you have to do is submit a letter telling why this Lady should deserve this award. Tell about her and her accomplishments. The winner will be selected at the Ladies Luncheon during Louisville. Again the Lady does not have to be present at Louisville to win this award. Letters or emails must be dated by November 1, 2013. On The Road With The ACA Queen Greetings from Purdue University! Since school started, I have had some time to finally sit down and reflect on what an amazing summer I had. Beginning my reign as the National Queen for 2013-2014 gave me some more miles to drive after being crowned at Junior Nationals in Grand Island, Nebraska. First off, I would like to extend a HUGE thank you to the state fairs I visited. They made working the Chianina Shows so enjoyable and very welcoming! I started my “State Fair Tour” in Ohio and made it to Illinois and Iowa. Congratulations to all the exhibitors for a job well done on some of the deepest Chi shows I have seen in a while. Also, a neat experience I had in Iowa was seeing my first full blood Chianina bull; which was pretty exciting for me! I loved getting to meet more people within our breed and how great the people are within the Hybrid Advantage Breed! I am so excited to be able to start the fall/winter show circuits and cannot wait to see everyone in Louisville! If my class schedule will allow me, let me know if I may assist with any of your Chi events this coming year. Best of Luck at the upcoming shows! ©ACA Page 32 | Chianina Journal | October/November 2013

Genetic Evaluation Set to Use Data From Calves Weighed at Younger and Older Ages Bob Weaber,Ph.D., Cow Calf Extension Specialist, Kansas State University

P

ersistent drought conditions across a wide area of the US have wreaked havoc on the production goals of many seedstock and commercial beef producers over the last several years. Not only does drought prevent adequate pasture growth and hay production, it affects the management and performance of cow-herds. Performance decreases range from lower fertility and conception rates, decreased milk production from cows, decreased calf survival and growth performance to weaning. Recent research also suggests the severely restricted intake and protein in the diet of cows while gestating, reduces muscularity and marbling in the calves which experienced the uterine environment. Drought not only affects this year’s production but will have an impact for several years to come on both livestock and range. Early weaning is one strategy commonly used by commercial producers to help ease the pain of drought conditions. Early weaning (at calf ages as early as 100 days) causes the dam to stop lactating. Cessation of lactation dramatically decreases the cow’s nutrient demand for both production and maintenance. In drought conditions this can extend already limited grazing resources. Removal of calves in these situations can help the calves too by moving them to a higher quality diet. Young calves are very

feed efficient and make better use of supplemental feed consumed directly rather than running through the calf ’s dam first. Early weaning can be a great management tool for seedstock producers, too, but historically has been avoided because of its impact on weaning performance records. Historically, the acceptable age of calf windows for weaning weight were 160-250 days of age. Yearling weights were limited to collection when calves were between 320 and 410 days of age. Previously, if a seedstock producer weaned a large number of calves at ages less than 160 days those records were edited out of the genetic evaluation system and were not used to compute EPDs. The elimination of large pieces of data was a large deterrent to early weaning. The rationale for the relatively narrow windows was established many, many years ago by the Beef Improvement Federation and was chosen due to the ability to use simple linear adjustment procedures to correct for age differences in animals across a contemporary group.

Page 36 | Chianina Journal | October/November 2013

Submission of large numbers of performance records from early weaned calves has provided support for the expansion of the age windows for weaning and yearling weight. Seedstock producers may now submit data for use in the genetic evaluation system for Chianina and Chi-influenced cattle (conducted by the American Simmental Association) for weaning weight for calves ranging from 100 to 310 days and yearling weights from 270 to 500 days of age. To help constrain potential biases in adjustments, birth age groups are limited 90 days which subsequently limits the age range in weaning and yearling groups of the same animals to not more than 90 days. These modifications to the genetic evaluation system provide producers with additional management flexibility while providing solid data for computation of EPDs. ©ACA
