MAINE-ANJOU Headquarters

M. BLAKE NELSON AMAA Executive Vice President

Greetings, This summer has went by fast, the state shows and fall sales are knocking at the door and the National Junior Heifer Show (NJHS) is in the rear view. I am proud to say we had families and kids represented from 26 different states join us in Sioux Falls, S.D. for a very successful event. The NJHS is one of the major highlights for the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) each year. It is an educational opportunity for our future leaders and showcases some of the best cattle that Maine-Anjou has to offer. The Maine-Anjou Herdsmen Group had another phenomenal year raising money to support scholarships for American Junior MaineAnjou Association (AJMAA) members. This group is lead by Brett Carter and to date they have awarded over $110,000 in scholarships since its inception in 2012. Thank you to the Herdsmen and to all of you that have supported our youth! After leaving this event I feel both motivated and very blessed by the loyal members that we have and are investing in our breed, thank you! In this unpredictable time there haven’t been very many things that have been typical, but in agriculture we have seen some constants with the crops well on their way and the spring born calves coming on strong and these are great blessings in many ways. We are lucky to have room to get outside, visit with neighbors and to work with our animals and the land. Having that AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2020

6

sense of some normalcy around the farm has been a tremendous morale booster for our family. From a show management standpoint there have been many limitations and changes from the norm and I urge you to be thankful for the opportunity to show, roll with the punches and be patient with the entire situation. There are many moving parts to a show in regular years much less dealing with the Covid-19 requirements and the additional hoops to work through so that the show can go on. Although things may be different and inconvenient, please be appreciative of the opportunity and understanding of the big picture. Thank you to those many managers and volunteers that make these shows happen! Some other activities to start planning for are the Bright Lights Maine-Anjou Sale in Denver, Colo. The Bright Lights sale has historically featured some of the very best herdsire prospects and females that our breeders have to offer. This sale is held in conjunction with the National Western Stock Show in the Yards. This is an excellent opportunity to market your program at the Super Bowl of livestock shows. The nomination forms will be available in early fall and if you have any questions please contact us. Our new genetic evaluation will be

finished very soon and that data will be uploaded into Digital Beef. We are very excited about this EPD run, which will include genetically enhanced data and updated carcass projections. Please recognize there may be some changes on your animals EPDs, the percentile ranking should be very close to before even if the numerical change is substantial. Take a look and if you have any questions or concerns please contact us at your convenience. The implementation of this technology will improve the accuracy of your animal’s genetic value and will be a great leap forward for our breed. I would like to wrap up by thanking all the sponsors, volunteers, families and our staff that played a part in the Maine-Anjou National Junior Heifer Show, great job! A special thank you to Cory Thomsen, Josh Cribbs and Dustin Hurlbut for all of their leg work getting the facility ready and to Lindsey and Heather for their unwavering commitment to both AJMAA & AJCA juniors! We truly have some of the most dedicated, selfless people in the cattle business that support Maine-Anjou and its members. I wish the best of luck to you and your families at your respective county/state shows and your fall cattle sales. Best Regards, Blake MAINE-ANJOU- Vision, Vigor, Value!

MAINE-ANJOU Commercial Connection

JOSHUA CRIBBS AMAA Director of Commercial Development

Spring 2020 certainly shaped up a bit different than we were all expecting and hoping, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t been able to make the best of the situation. If nothing else, the forced early school closings brought the farm and ranch help home early for the summer. The times created an inherent focus on family, safety and navigation of a new normal. Even with all the uncertainty, one thing remained constant through it all… the American Farmer and Rancher. Just like they always do, they’ve bent without breaking and continued to charge on with spring calving, breeding and planting. Those standing on the frontlines of agriculture commodity pricing are certainly getting used to trying times and figuring out how to keep moving forward. Being able to have the National Junior Heifer Show and being a part of an event that everyone in our breed was excited for was an awesome experience. As the summer continues to charge on and we start to move toward the fall, we are constantly in search of how to add profit to feeder calf prices. With harvest facilities still navigating the novel corona virus and figuring out how to get back to full capacity, AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2020

8

it is certainly adjusting fall feeder calf prices. The fall projection looks softer than ideal, and yet prices seem to be holding steady. Current 500-600 weight cattle are near $160/ cwt. Going forward, it looks as if we should see a slight increase and hold at that line. Although directly lower this year than the previous, in the month of July it still looks as if we should see a slight spike in prices due to reduction of cow inventory last fall. Due to a lower total spring calf inventory, it should drive demand slightly. The biggest kicker that could drive price up considerably is slaughter facilities increasing their kill capacity and continuing to come fully online. Reports from central Nebraska are that ‘Show List’ for fat cattle are staying constant at 1,400 to 1,600 head constantly, where a year ago it would hold in the 2,000 to 3,000 head list. The biggest fight feeders are facing with packers is the fact that the daily kill capacity is at 25 to 40 percent of what it should be depending on area. Because cattle aren’t a storable commodity, it’s becoming a constant battle to manage yield grade and live weight. There are some large takeaways that we saw with the Maine-Anjou cattle previously

on feed at South Dakota State University (SDSU) that can combat some of these issues. Because of COVID-19 we were forced to harvest those cattle a bit earlier than we wanted to and yet still were able to capitalize 76% Choice or better and maintain an average Yield Grade of 2. These things alone shine a light on the fact that cattle of MaineAnjou influence can be profitable in the yard. When you have to hold on to them, they have enough muscle to continue to develop fat cover and still offset the yield grade faults that other black hided cattle fall victim too. Be sure to take a look at the American Maine-Anjou’s most recent research studies findings included in this month’s Voice.

FEEDLOT PERFORMANCE Powered by Maine-Anjou Efficiency

by Joshua Cribbs, AMAA Commercial Developement Director Fall is quickly approaching. This time last year, we were getting ready to source our first set of cattle – in sometime – for a University run research trial. Since coming on board with the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA), it has been my goal to help foster relationships between land grant universities and the AMAA. These connections allow us to create not only current and forward thinking, but data that is third party verified and significant from a results perspective. This plan was brought about so we could use the research for promotional materials, as well as to help build a commercial image for our breeders. We were able to attain those goals with South Dakota State University (SDSU) and Dr. Zachary Smith, head of the feedlot and research facility and assistant professor. We hoped Dr. Smith and the SDSU would be a tremendous resource to verify the cattle that we all know have the power to perform in the yard. We sourced in a total of 190 steers from two breeders within South Dakota – because of the geographic region and closeness to the yard. The AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2020

12

cattle were born in March and April of 2019, weaned and arrived to the feedyard in mid-October. Both Blake and myself, along with the AMAA Board of Directors at the time, had high hopes for the data when we embarked on this project. We wanted to debunk the fact that Maine-Anjou cattle couldn’t grade Choice. We wanted to confirm that we were going to cut large ribeye areas and generate low Yield Grades. We also wanted to know if the cattle could remain efficient in the process. What we were after is the confidence to go to bull buyers and say, “When you use MaineAnjou genetics your feeder calves will land in the yard and excel, make money, keep feed cost low, and look good while doing it.” All of which should keep yards and buyers coming back for more. We were also hopeful to get published scientific journal articles that cite Maine-Anjou cattle as the breed used and in turn show they are a strong and viable option for research and the feedlot. We were able to secure the first of a couple manuscripts in July 2020 when Dr. Smith published and accepted the manuscript entitled:

Evaluation of an active live yeast (Levucell Saccharomyces cerevisiae, CNCM l-1077) on receiving and backgrounding period growth performance and efficiency of dietary net energy utilization in low health risk beef steers. This article is the first – of what should be a few – that document the trial and cattle performance while being placed on different trial periods throughout the entire feeding phase. The cattle, as you can tell from the pictures, were phenotypically the kind of cattle you want to drive by and make bunk calls on. Backs were big, body shape and dimension bold and stout and 99% black hided with just a few baldies and white flanks. The cattle were a true testament to the breed’s progress and discipline over the last two decades to remove horns, keep them black hided and put do-ability into the cattle that can be counted on. The other thing worth noting is the cattle were made up of higher percentage Maine-Anjou and Maine-Angus based genetics. Just like most of the world, the novel corona virus did affect us just a touch with regards to the harvest date on the cattle. They were shipped a bit ahead of time, due to the fact that Dr. Smith had trouble securing a harvest date because of virtually everything being shut down. The saving grace of securing a date was the fact that the cattle were black hided and had grade potential because of hide color advantage that Angus has secured in the market place. This advantage is something that Maine-Anjou breeders can certainly exploit to give the cattle a little extra value. Because of the quicker ship date, the group likely didn’t reach their full potential on the out weight, but they made up for it on the carcass side. In Table 1, the carcass/cut out data can be seen. The other part of the trial that is important to mention is the actual feeding data. We saw multiple advantages during the finishing phase of the diet, but probably

the most notable was a Feed to Gain of 5.84 to 1. With the feed to gain strong and the ribeye areas large, it brings to light that Maine-Anjou cattle can be efficient and generate lean tissue growth. Those things, combined with the right person designing the diets, show the cattle grade and aren’t discounted on the rail for being overly fat and under muscled. We can deliver the muscle side with the black hided advantage. At the moment, the details of treatment groups cannot be disclosed due

to the research contract Dr. Smith entered into when he put this group of cattle on feed. As more manuscripts are published, we will be sure to keep everyone up-todate. Going forward, we hope to use this as an example of how Maine-Anjou genetics can be used in a research environment -that these animals can be counted on to perform. We also embrace the opportunity to use this information to build confidence in Maine genetics, both from the bull buyer and the cattle feeder. Quality Grade 76% Choice or Better

Junior National Recap

The 2020 National Junior Heifer Show will be something that we will not soon forget. From the uncertainty of having a show, to moving locations across the country, hardworking AJMAA & AJCA youth from across the map were resilient. They worked hard through the ups and downs and never wavered. The staff at the AJMAA & AJCA offices are incredibly thankful for their resilence and all of their hard work. While this year’s show did look different, one thing remains, there is no better way to raise a child and it’s still one of the best weeks of the year. We hope you join us next year in Chickasha, Oklahoma and a whole lot more normal! - Lindsey Broek

VINCENT BLAKLEY

MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Vincent Blakley Memorial Scholarship was established in 2020 to honor the late, Vincent Blakley. A distinguished cattleman, “Vinny” was a mentor to countless youth along the show road and in the Maine-Anjou community. This scholarship was established in his honor and was available to all Maine-Anjou seniors who display the Maine-Anjou family values through herdsmanship and an independent spirit. This year’s winner was Samantha Noteboom, Iowa, and she was awarded $500.

HERDSMAN SCHOLARSHIPS The summer of 2020 was a milestone year for the Herdsman Gathering and their scholarships. To date, the Herdsman Group has awarded over $110,000 in scholarships to hardworking AJMAA youth. TIKITots Since it’s inception in 2017, the “Lindsey’s Little’s” or novice program has gained both popularity and recognition. Started as a program for the ‘younger generation’ this program was designed to get the littlest of littles involved. The junior national is a family affair and a highlight for many each summer. With that comes familes who travel with one young showmen and a brother or sister in tow. While there are many activities for exibitors to participate in, we wanted activities from those who are along for the ride. What started off as a simple coloring contest has morphed into an hour a day, four times a week activity along with a few specific contests being offered for our littles. Fearlessly lead by past AJMAA junior board member, Kaylee Miller, and her mom, Sheila, the Little’s program is the real deal. This year’s program was graciously sponsored by Sure Champ. With over 50+ youth in attendance each day, we as an association want to thank Sure Champ, Kaylee & Sheila Miller and of course our Littles. It is through legacy programs like these that the AJMAA will thrive in the year’s to come!

HELPFUL TIPS WHEN REGISTERING: To avoid delays in your registration work during our busy season follow the tips below. Double check that all blanks and information are correct and complete before mailing or submitting online. Things most commonly missed are: o Missing herd prefix and herd ID o Birthdates o Date of sale o Name of animal o Payment Make sure the person that is registering the animal owns the dam with the exception of ET calves. If an ET calf, make sure the donor dam has DNA verified and has been PHA & TH tested with the results on file. If you are checking on testing work please e-mail Paige at paige@amaapc.com. If you need a paper copy please contact Donna Grame at (816) 431-9950 Ext. 303 or e-mail her at donna@amaapc.com. All inventories will be due no later than Dec. 18, 2020.

FOUNDATION ANIMALS: Non-registered bulls and females must be entered as a foundation animal prior to progeny being registered. All current “P” (performance only) cattle will be grand-fathered into the program. If the sire is an AI sire and registered at another breed association, the pedigree and testing must be on file with the AMAA. The charge to add a sire pedigree will be a onetime charge of $40. If the AMAA finds that the pedigree has already been paid for by another breeder, the $40 charge will not be applied. Dams registered at another breed association may also be added for a one-time charge of $25. See the new self-billing sheet for foundation fees. ONLINE TRANSFERS: When transferring an animal online make sure there is not a member number already created for the buyer. Creating more than one number for an individual creates registration problems later. If you find the buyer in the system at a different address please notify the buyer first to confirm the address and then notify the AMAA office to update the account. It is always a good idea to always search for the buyer using the search tool before doing the work, that way if they have a different address it is caught before entering the registration and transfer. When creating a new profile for a

buyer please make sure to never give a junior a farm name. Please enter the junior’s name on the farm line and also as the contact. RUSH ORDERS: If you are selling an animal, we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person. Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $50 (covers eight head). No work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail within one to two business days. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). There is no same-day turnaround. If requiring a registration number only, it will still be considered a rush as we still have to process the work to obtain the number. DNA, TH AND PHA REQUIREMENTS: Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or non-registered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file. If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the ET(s) have the tests done, in the

absence of the donor’s records. The DNA, TH and PHA testing can be done at GeneSeek. A submission form is found on our Web site, maineanjou.org. Samples must be on a hair card, blood card or TSU in order to be submitted. Sampling supplies can be ordered on our website under the Genetics/Testing tab. Animals must be in the AMAA herd book before testing can be requested. Please note that testing takes approximately 3-4 weeks from the time the sample arrives at the lab. We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, please make sure we have an up-to-date e-mail address for you, if applicable. BULL CALF REGISTRATION: If registering a bull calf born after Jan. 1, 2014, it must be TH/PHA free by parentage or have testing completed prior to registering and on file with the AMAA. Carriers will no longer be registered, but may be entered as a foundation animal. All progeny out of a Foundation carrier bull needs to be tested free of that defect prior to registration. If registrations are submitted before testing has been completed, the animal will not be registered. Instead the animal will be given a performance number at a nonrefundable penalty charge of $10. Once the animal has been tested the registration may be completed at the regular rate. Please plan accordingly as testing can take up to three or four weeks.

2020 ROYALTY

QUEEN Mckenna Striegel, Ohio

Hey there AMAA and AJMAA enthusiasts! My name is Whitney Walker and I am thrilled to introduce myself as your newly elected American Junior Maine-Anjou Association (AJMAA) board president. I am originally from Northwest Arkansas and currently attend Oklahoma State University, where I am a sophomore double majoring in Agribusiness and Agricultural Leadership. I have been showing Maine-Anjou cattle for my entire junior career and love my Maine-Anjou family that stretches across the nation! On behalf of the 2020-2021 junior board, we are so excited to serve you guys this year with the best of our ability. Having board members from Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Ohio, Texas, Oklahoma, Illinois, Kansas, and Wisconsin, we feel like we can reach even more members while at local and state level shows, alongside our national shows. One of the most important jobs that we have as

breed representatives is connecting with our members, and that is exactly what we plan to do! As most of you know, COVID-19 kept us from having our leadership conference back in May and drastically shifted our junior national plans. Although we were thrown for a loop, this also allowed us to expand the possibilities for NYLC in 2021, as well as try new ideas at junior national that turned out awesome! It’s always beneficial to step out of comfort zones and try new ideas, and this year was proof of that. Personally, I am so thankful for the association staff, volunteers, and state associations for adapting and making sure that we still got to enjoy one of the best weeks of the year in South Dakota. As we move into the fall, I want to wish each of you good luck at county fairs, state fairs and majors! I hope to see you all at American Royal!

THE HERDSMEN by Lindsey Broek

Powered by Youth

The hum of the fans, the echo of children’s laughter as they see their friends after a long spring and some of the best Maine-Anjou cattle in the country all happen at the National Junior Heifer Show each summer. For many, this one week is where it all comes together – the long hours of brushing for the perfect hair coat or the hours practicing their speeches and

sales pitch, all of their hard work is about to pay off and while AJMAA Youth from across the country are working hard, another group is working just as hard for them – the Herdsmen. Since 2011, the Herdsmen Group have been championing a cause near and dear to their hearts – youth - specifically AJMAA youth. “What started off as a way for us

to create more unity amongst the adults of our breed has grown into something we never could have imagined,” says Brett Carter, the token “leader” of the group. A past Herdsman of the Year for the American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA), Brett set out with a goal to get past herdsmen winners and current MaineAnjou breeders/herdsmen together during

RASHELE BLAKLEY, 2012 Being selected as the first Junior Herdsman was an honor and completely unexpected. I can’t think of a better wat to recognize AJMAA members for all their hard work behind the scenes. In a time when so many things are predictable, the Herdsman Scholarship is a great way to surprise young people for their dedication and hard work to their Maine-Anjou breed.

BAILEY CORE, 2013 For me, showing was more than about the showring. It was an opportunity to be involved in all aspects of my families operation. I was very fortunate to grow up showing Maine-Anjou cattle and be involved in an organization that rewards kids who have a passion for the industry and breed. As an early Herdsman Scholarship winner, I got to witness the group of awesome individuals start up a program that is one of a kind. It was an honor to be named a recipient and it is great to watch how the program has grown and rewarded awesome young people.

the NJHS for a golf game. Brett started by calling two close friends and fellow Herdsman winners, Cory Thomsen & Matt Scasta, and pitching the idea - Matt Scasta told Brett, “I don’t play golf,” but when Brett hinted at the idea of turning the golf game into a brainstorming session to help out kids, Matt and the rest of the group were all in. “The first year we started we had about 15-20 guys, says Cory Thomsen, Maine-Anjou enthusiast and a past AMAA Herdsman of the Year winner. “We probably played the worst game of golf that day, but we raised $2,000 from just those that were there, and that was what sparked the scholarship program idea,” said Carter. “If we can raise $2,000 at one golf outing, we can do this every year,” said Thomsen. For the next two years the Herdsmen Group, made up of past Herdsman of the

Year winners as well as current Herdsmen from leading Maine-Anjou operations, put together money with the goal of providing a scholarship to a deserving Maine-Anjou senior. “The qualifications are simple, find someone who is like us – it does not have to be someone who is a superstar scholastically, but instead it would be someone that could help us at our respective programs,” said Matt Scasta. The first winner of the Herdsman Scholarship was Rashele Blakley from Oolagah, Okla. I don’t think there is anyone in the Maine-Anjou breed that has not heard the Blakley name, so a logical choice for their first winner was Rashele. She was awarded $1,000 in Lima, Ohio in 2012. The following year the Herdsmen Group awarded Jon Heaton with $1,500 and the next year Bailey Core got the nod

TAYLOR DORSEY, 2017 To me, there is nothing more humbling than being awarded a scholarship by a group of individuals that you look up to. The herdsmen represent a group who not only support the juniors, but go above and beyond to help those juniors reach for their dreams. They are some of the most passionate, hardworking and inspirational people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting and being recognized by them is a true honor. The scholarship gave me the opportunity to continue pursuing my college education at Oklahoma State University and the motivation to keep bettering myself. It gave me the encouragement to find a career that I love where I now in return get to show my passion for livestock and junior exhibitors. The scholarship, Herdsman Group and the AJMAA is something I will forever be grateful for.

for another $1,500. In 2015 the Herdsmen Group made the decision to expand their reach and started the Herdsman Gathering. Initially to come to the gathering you had to be one of 100 people who purchased a ticket valued at $150, once you got to the gathering each Herdsman had provided items for a drawing and at the end a small auction was held, the first year for the Gathering raised $7,000 and they awarded four scholarships. What started off as a simple golf outing and a way to build comradery amongst one another has ended up being one of the most successful endeavors in scholarship funding I have ever seen. Most notable is from its very humble beginnings and a Adelyda Ebersole, after winning a $10,000 Herdsmen Scholarship

LADD LANDGRAF, 2018 Being selected as the Herdsman Scholarship recipient is something I worked towards almost all my show career. Since the scholarship is not something you fill out an application for, rather the Herdsmen Group comes together and picks an outstanding youth member who they believe deserves the scholarship. It is bigger than the money, it is the confidence in knowing the best herdsmen in the industry believe in your skills, work ethic and what you are doing with your program.

$1,000 scholarship, the Herdsmen Group has since raised and gave back more than $100,000 in the last 5 years - $107,500 to be exact. Not many philanthropic endeavors can boast growth like that. Also important to note is that while the Herdsmen Group started the idea, they are only as successful as those who support the cause. “People want to be involved and give back to the

kids and this association. Every penny that we raise goes back to the youth, and we are thankful for the people who support the Gathering and the kids,” says Carter. As a Youth Director for our association I cannot thank the Herdsmen Group and those that support them enough for the generosity they show the hardworking youth of this breed. Each year, without

asking or prompting they come together to raise these funds, not because they have to, but because they want to, and the support that they receive is tremendous. Programs are only as good as the people who support them, and the Youth of this breed are in great hands with programs like these.

ADELYDA EBERSOLE, 2019 Receiving the Herdsman Scholarship was an amazing honor for not only myself, but my family. The scholarship and Herdsmen Group show our juniors that even if your hard work doesn’t pay off in the ring, it pays off in life. The Herdsmen Group does an amazing job for our juniors and provides them an opportunity to be recognized for their work ethic. They hold a lot of prestige in my eyes and our juniors.
