Headquarters

Pulling in One Direction by John Boddicker, executive vice president American Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) Mission Statement The AMAA will promote Maine-Anjou genetics that provide superior, value added performance, docility, and carcass excellence for the beef industry while also providing expanded membership services for adult and junior members. It is no small task to get a group of people to pull in one direction in order to accomplish a goal that has been put before them. What a success story our recent National Junior Show proved to be through the GREAT organization and cooperation of the Nebraska Maine-Anjou and Chianina breeders. The hours of pre-show planning, committee responsibilities and leadership along with the WILL to get it done were on full display! On behalf of all of the juniors that participated, parents and the AMAA, THANK YOU to our host state NEBRASKA - what a great job!! Participation in the 2013 National Junior Show was definitely up, the number of contest participants in junior, intermediate and senior divisions was simply outstanding. We all get caught up in the show part of a junior national but to take notice of how these young people learn how to express themselves in the various contests is very rewarding. Like any business, this is a people business, those that can communicate on a positive level with the largest number of people will have the greatest chance of success. The contests do provide a wonderful opportunity for the junior participants to expande their communication skills. This will be the last National Junior Show for our junior director, Kasey Herman. Kasey will be leaving us July 12th and we wish her nothing but the best! Her guidance of the junior program along with her organizational skills will be missed by everyone. THANK YOU, KASEY! Intertwined with all of the activities of the junior show the AMAA holds an annual event, the She’s A 6

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2013

Lady Shoot-Out. A new format of judging this year was implemented and was very well received. Thank you to our five judges this year; Tom Kupke, Jason Spotanski, Cory Miller, Pat Wiese and Kevin Benes worked through the cattle in a very timely fashion. Please refer to later pages in this edition of the magazine for the She’s A Lady wrap-up. The AMAA holds its summer committee and AMAA Board of Directors meetings during the early part of the week. I encourage you as a breeder/member of the AMAA to take a few minutes and review the board meeting minutes that can be found on later pages in this edition of the Voice. Special note with regard to some changes are: • As reported from the November 2012 meeting, all bulls registered after Jan. 1, 2014 will need to be free by parentage or free by test in order to be registered. A change to the 2012 report is that females will need to be free by parentage or free by test in order to be registered after Jan. 1, 2020. In essence two years was added to the female deadline which should give every breeding program the ability to comply with the 2020 time frame. • Assuming that proper programming can be in place beginning Jan. 1, 2014 a Foundation Registry will be active where all sires and dams must enter into the Maine-Anjou database. Basically this means that all non-registered (commercial) sires and dams will need to carry identification and supply as much breed make up as possible. Fees will be reduced as compared to regular registration costs. This program will allow those bulls tested as carriers to be

Headquarters placed in the Foundation Registry. Free progeny from those bulls will then be allowed into the registry without that bull losing the ability to pass on its Maine-Anjou percentage to subsequent progeny. Specific details of the foundation registry program will be present in the October or November/December issue of the Voice magazine. • No changes were made at this time regarding the minimum percentage a MaineTainer must be in order to register. That range will remain from 25 percent (1/4) to 62.5 percent (5/8).

Crazy Eight Heifer Project Buy a ticket now for the chance to win four heifers donated by leading Maine-Anjou operations (two winners, four heifers each). The money raised will be used to expand junior scholarships, junior and adult education and breed research. Full details to be found later in this edition of the Voice magazine!

2013 National Maine-Anjou Feed Trial by David Steen, commercial development director First things first, I’d like to begin this article by saying ‘THANK YOU’ to all of the consignors in our first year’s feed trial. The consignors from six states include: • Merle & Merna Schrage, Parkersburg, Iowa • Rick & Rosemary Carlson, Plattsburg, Mo. • Rod & Clyde Belding, Sharpsburg, Iowa • Koo’s Kattle Kompany, Audubon, Iowa • Denny Grimm, Manning, Iowa • Opperman Family Farms, Manning, Iowa • Ben & Alicia Rigdon, New London, Iowa • George Lukach, Streator, Ill. • Blind Badger Ranch, Fort Morgan, Colo. • Mike Holden Maines & More, Scranton, Iowa • 4J Family Partnership, Parker, Texas • Rainey Stevens & Ebersole Cattle Co., Guernsey, Iowa • Truline Maines, Richards, Mo. • Tim, Karen & Tyler Loudon, Creston, Iowa • Richard Fechter, Howard, Kan. The last of our cattle will be shipped during the third week of July. The final results will be published and sent to each consignor when that becomes available. This year’s cattle met with the worst challenge of market price and feed cost in the history of the Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity (TCSCF). This has been a trying year for all cattle feeders. Plans have been made to hold our second feed trial this fall at the TCSCF located in Lewis, Iowa about an hour east of Omaha, Neb. The TCSCF began in 1982 with 35 Iowa producers consigning 105 steers for feedlot and carcass evaluation, ultimately tracking feedlot profitability animal by animal. The futurity is associated with nine feedyards all located in southwest Iowa. These feedyards have been associated with the futurity for years and all do an outstanding job of feeding and 8

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2013

caring for the cattle. The TCSCF board of directors directs the program with oversight by the Iowa State University staff. Darrell Busby, Iowa State University Beef Specialist for southwest Iowa, has managed this very successful futurity since its beginning in 1982. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Busby and have him oversee our trial. This year Busby will also assist in the data collection, genetic evaluation, marketing and sorting. In the last eight years, the TCSCF has evaluated more than 40,000 cattle from 13 states. Their reputation is impeccable. The feeding site for the 2013 AMAA feeding trial will again be at Gregory Feedlot, Tabor, Iowa. Gregory’s is a 7,000 head feedlot located in southwest Iowa about forty miles southeast of Omaha, Neb. Keep in mind that the TCSCF works with producers of all sizes and the producers of Maine-Anjou influenced cattle are welcome to feed from one head to hundreds. There are no limits. • Additional information: Gregory Feedlots Jim Gregory, Owner David Trowbridge, Feedlot Manager 1164 305th Ave. Tabor, IA 51653 Phone: (712) 625-2311 Fax: (712) 625-2321 Web site: www.gregoryfeedlots.com E-mail: gregfeed@heartland.net • Directions to Gregory Feedlots: From Tabor, Iowa go south on highway 275 for two miles to junction 184 (County highway J18) and 275. Head east on highway 184 (J18) for three and a half miles to 305th avenue. Go north one quarter mile to the top of a hill and look for a sign on the east side of

the road. For those of you who will be traveling on Interstate 29, take exit 24 and go east 10 miles to Tabor, Iowa.

arrangements can be made for your cattle to be delivered on an alternative date that works for you. We will accept cattle anytime. Please call Dave Steen with your delivery intentions at (515) 201-3281 or feedlot manager, David Trowbridge at (712) 625-2311 or (712) 370-2205. We appreciate having your cattle and will work to accommodate you however we can. Please keep in mind that the calves need to be weaned for at least 30-45 days with vaccinations completed. It will be a benefit to the health of your cattle and the entire pen of cattle. Computerized records keep the data moving through the system. Information will be collected on each animal throughout its time in the feedlot - prior to going on feed, re-implant and harvest. The TCSCF evaluation team will use the records and visual appraisal to sort the cattle into different harvest groups to ensure calves are sold at an optimum endpoint. The TCSCF team has been collecting performance and carcass data for nearly 25 years. The time tested system helps identify when the cattle are ready to be shipped and follows them through harvest. The financing options can allow producers, who consign a minimum of 10 head, the opportunity to receive $300 per head payment upon delivery to the feedyard if that is desired. Please contact the TCSCF office at (712) 769-2600 before delivery to receive your payment. No one will be billed for feed. It will be deducted from the proceeds of the cattle!

Health Requirements:

Health requirements are strictly enforced. Health of the cattle is very important and has a major effect on gain, feed conversions, stress on the cattle and the overall level of performance. Entries shall meet the following standards at least four weeks prior to delivery: • Bulls castrated. • Treated for internal and external parasites. • All horns removed. • Immunized for:

- Modified Live Virus - IBR, BVD, PI3 and BRSV - Pasteurella multocida bacterin toxoid - Mannheimia hemolytica bacterin toxoid - Clostridium Chauvoei, Septicum (Blackleg and malignant edema) - Clostridium Perfringes (Type C & D) - Steers and heifers must be weaned and started on a light ration 28 days prior to delivery. - Steers and heifers must be free of warts, ringworm and mange. A veterinary statement on vaccinations must accompany cattle. Health rules will be strictly enforced. Analysis of TCSCF data indicates calves vaccinated with modified live vaccines result in significantly reduced respiratory pulls in the feedlot as compared to calves vaccinated with killed vaccines. We suggest testing replacement heifers for BVD.

TCSCF Rules and Regulations:

1. Open to all producers and feedlot operators that have Maine-Anjou influenced cattle. 2. Sire or sire breed groups will be identified. 3. Individual steer/heifer entries will be accepted which may be either home-raised or purchased. A farm may make as many entries as they would like. 4. A pen reservation fee of $20 per steer must accompany entry. This entry fee will be credited back to each producer’s account. 5. A $300 per head advance is available for a 10 head minimum. Interest incurred will be the responsibility of the consignor. The TCSCF administrative office will need to be notified if an advance is requested by a consignor. 6. Entries are due three weeks prior to beginning of test for cattle. If you have a problem, please call Dave at (515) 201-3281. 7. At delivery, all steers and heifers will be double tagged. The original owner’s eartag will be removed. 8. No bulls or stags allowed. No horns allowed. 9. Ownership will be transferred to TCSCF for $5 per steer or heifer. All ownership rights are thus conveyed to and steers and heifers become the property of TCSCF. This eliminates the need for a feed deposit. Death will be a loss to TCSCF and the former owner. 10. Steers and heifers will be fed a warm-up ration for 28 days. They will be weighed on test at the end of warm-up. Steers and heifers will be placed on approximately 80 percent concentrate ration as AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2013

9

Commercial Connection soon as possible. 10. Steers and heifers will be weighed individually at least four times: upon delivery, start of test period, time of re-implant and prior to harvest. 11. Steers and heifers will be harvested on at least two different dates, five weeks apart to determined by the TCSCF Board. 12. An annual meeting will be held in July. 13. The TCSCF board reserves the right to disqualify any animal at any time if a problem arises with a steer or heifer entered in the program. 14. Animals may be sold or returned to original owner upon reimbursement for expenses.

Tri-County Carcass Futurity Reports to Producer Through the course of the cattle entered into the TCSCF program, information is shared with the consignor in three different reports.

Report #1 - On-Test Report

This report will give the weight upon delivery to Iowa and home weight and shrink if the home weights are provided. It will also give the on-test weight which is the weight taken after the cattle have been in Iowa for 28 to 35 days. A disposition score will be taken when the cattle are weighed and that will also be included with the report. If the producer has reported the birthdates, a weight per day of age (WDA) and WDA ratio will be included. The warm-up average daily gain is also reported.

Report #2 - Re-Implant Report

This report will include weights taken when the cattle are re-implanted 70 days before the first harvest date or approximately 60 days after the ontest weights are taken. It will also include the average disposition score, overall average daily gain, on-test average daily gain, average daily gain ratio, WDA and WDA ratio (if birthdates are reported to the TCSCF office).

Report #3 - Final Report

The financial report is confidential to the individual consignor. There will also be a check included in the packet. Please feel free to call (712) 769-2600 with questions or comments. You may also reach them via e-mail at dbusby@iastate.edu or check out the web page at www.tcscf.com. This feed trial will allow all cattle producers with Maine-Anjou influenced calves the unique opportunity to feed and showcase their genetics. Trials of this magnitude and depth will provide producers with the results to assist them in selecting for the genetic traits 10

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2013

that need improved upon. The Maine-Anjou breed is such a unique breed in that it presents cattlemen with the genetic reach to compete in all phases of beef production and does it well. We have proven this! Let’s make the rest of the beef industry aware of our attributes. With the increased prevalence of value added programs, more and more cattle are being harvested on grids today than ever before. Feedlot managers are demanding more feeding and carcass information daily and they are encouraging cattlemen to produce high quality cattle that have the opportunity to meet or exceed the grid specs to earn additional premiums. From our years of data collection, we have documented the earning power and true value that Maine-Anjou genetics can provide the commercial cattlemen. Please consider joining us this fall by consigning some of your cattle to this TCSCF as we continue to collect data for our consignors and the Maine-Anjou breed. Data collection is vital to the future growth of the Maine-Anjou breed. If you need a ride, please feel free to contact me and I will do my best to make it happen. For those of you that are interested in consigning some cattle, please feel free to contact Dave at (515) 201-3281 or the TCSCF at (712) 769-2600 for a complete set of guidelines for the trial. Please remember that whatever the situation might be, we will work with delivery dates and times to accommodate you and your cattle. The American Maine-Anjou Association would greatly appreciate your support. Thanks for your consideration!

Maines on the Move,

Dave Steen

2013 NATIONAL JUNIOR MAINE-ANJOU SHOW June 15 - 21, 2013 • Grand Island, Neb.

2013 SWEEPSTAKES’ WINNERS

E

very year at the National Junior Maine-Anjou Show, junior members participate in a number of contests throughout the week with hopes to earn points towards an overall sweepstakes championship in their age division. The individual sweepstakes is the highest honor an individual is awarded at the national banquet. Individuals earn points in every contest they participate in. Points are awarded to first through fifth place in each contest with additional participation points awarded to everyone involved in each contest.

An overall state sweepstakes award is also given based on each states’ participation. Points are awarded for each individual from a specific state participating in a contest. The more juniors entered in a specific contest for a state, the more points awarded to that state. This year’s sweepstakes’ winners are: Abby Wood, Kansas, junior; Kiley Elder, Iowa and Miles Stagemeyer, Nebraska, intermediate and Bailey Core, Iowa and Andrew Weaver, Michigan, senior. Iowa won the state sweepstakes category this year!

If you are selling an animal we ask that you register and transfer the animal in a timely manner to avoid extra charges and to assure buyers they are purchasing from a reputable business person. Rushes will be done in the order received; a rush fee is currently $25 (covers eight head). If rush work is faxed, it is the breeder’s responsibility to give us a follow-up phone call to make sure the work is legible and to cover all fees. it is not our office staff ’s responsibility to call breeders that fax in registration work. no work will be released until payment is complete. Rush work is processed ahead of the regular work that is received in our office and mailed by regular mail the next business day. We will do our best to complete rush work that is received in our office by 2 p.m. (Monday – Friday). there is no same-day turnaround. If you need to have registrations sent out by overnight delivery, there is an additional fee (in addition to the rush fee) for sending overnight. We normally use Federal Express (Fed Ex) and the charges are based on Fed Ex fees at that given time. Again, let us emphasize, it is your responsibility to contact our office to make arrangements for overnight delivery so that we have the correct shipping address and payment before sending. Fed Ex WiLL not deliver to a post office box. A rush will be picked up by Fed Ex the next business day for delivery the following day. For big weekend events, such as state expos, we reserve the right to require work to be in our office no later than 2 p.m. on the Wednesday prior to that weekend’s show. Please plan ahead. If a paper is needed within two weeks, a rush will be required at this time of year. Thank you.

QUESTIONS ON REGISTERING

Please read through the information found on our homepage at www.maine-anjou.org.

REGISTRATION NUMBERS

Once an animal is registered, it is backed up that same night to our Web site, www.maine-anjou.org. It can be viewed by clicking on “Search the MaineAnjou Breed.”

dNA, Th ANd phA REQUIREMENTS

Prior to registering any ET calves, all donor dams (including commercial or non-registered dams) must have DNA, TH and PHA on file in our office. Also, all AI sires are required to have the same on file. Therefore, our office will hold any ET registrations submitted out of dams without testing on file as well as all registrations out of AI sires that do not have complete testing on file. If the donor dam is deceased and not tested, we do require that the ET(s) have the tests done, in the absence of the donor’s records. The DNA, TH and PHA testing can be done at GeneSeek. A submission form is found on our Web site, www.maine-anjou.org. Maine-Anjou samples are put into testing at GeneSeek on Wednesdays so please plan accordingly when submitting. DNA results will be back in the AMAA office late in the next week after the testing begins; TH and PHA results will be in our office two weeks later, usually on a Thursday. We would like to start sending the test results by e-mail only, so please make sure we have an up-todate e-mail address for you, if applicable.

(Given proper programming is in place) • Fees will be: $10 MAPP participants, $20 Breeders Choice. • Non-registered bulls and females must enter into the foundation program prior to MaineTainer progeny being registered. All current “P” cattle will be grandfathered into the program. • Registered cattle of another breed, if now in the system, will be grandfathered in. Currently that information is on the AMAA database but not accessible to membership. • AMAA staff will research programming that would allow breeders to rank their herds (EPDs) by performance/carcass categories. • AMAA staff will research the capability to transfer on-line. Board Profiles

Randy Jones Region 1

My name is Randy Jones, I am 61 years old and have raised and showed cattle since the age of nine. I am co-owner of Jones Show Cattle, LLC (JSC) with my son, Troy Jones. We calved out approximately 130 Maine-Anjou calves this spring. JSC purchased their first Maine-Anjou cattle over 20 years ago and started showing them in 1993. I started R.D. Jones Excavating, Inc. in 1972 and built it to what it is today, with over 60 employees and 80 pieces of construction equipment, we work all over northwest Ohio. Together with the experience of running a business and raising cattle for over 40 years, I am sure that I can help fellow Maine-Anjou breeders continue improvements of the breed as it has over the years. I will work with the other board members to promote Maine cattle to the commercial breeders – I think this is the area of the Maine business that must improve. Cattle herds are decreasing in the United States and we must increase the percentage of Maine bulls being sold to the commercial herds. I have been a strong supporter in the Maine-Anjou breed and will continue to support the breed and the breeders who I will represent.

Jason Minnaert Region 1 Born and raised in Atkinson, Ill., I grew up exhibiting livestock and was very involved in 4-H and FFA. After attending several Maine-Anjou junior nationals growing up, I knew the Maine-Anjou breed was for me. After I was done showing my former show heifers were in production and I was able to, through private treaty sales, pay my way through college. I attended Black Hawk East and went on to graduate from Oklahoma State University. Currently the herd consists of approximately 90 cows, 35 of which are registered Maines with the majority of the balance being recips. The main strengths of the Maine-Anjou breed are production oriented cattle and the people that contribute to the breed. Over the past few years, Maine-Anjou cattle have become more practical in both the feedlot and on the rail being heavy muscled and have better maternal instincts. It’s important that we make commercial producers more aware of the genetic value the Maine-Anjou breed has to offer. I am an avid supporter of the American MaineAnjou Association (AMAA) and young breeders are the future of this breed and its genetics. My vision for the Maine-Anjou breed would be to enhance genetics. The advancements of the genetics must be adopted by intelligent leaders of the cattle industry. Support from the organization helps in improving the breed quality and creating functional cattle. Maine-Anjou genetic improvements are crucial in the showring as well. I believe it is a necessity for the Maine-Anjou breed to provide for the commercial cattleman! Minnaert Show Cattle has successfully raised and contributed to Maine-Anjou genetics and junior exhibitors from the local to national level. Our operation focuses on producing high-quality show calves, bulls and cows to increase herd potential. Maine-Anjou cattle have had dominate success in the showring, which has added to the value of top end cattle.

Board Profiles

My desire as a member of your board would be to continue the work that has already been started in guiding our breed to the top of the industry through promotion, research, education and youth development now and in the future.

Cliff Randall Region 1

I was born and raised on our family farm in Louisiana, being involved with cattle ever since. My family swapped to a full Maine-Anjou herd in the early 1990’s after using Maine-Anjou genetics for crossbreds for about 15 years. Many of you know me from different shows over the years. I have attended every junior national since 1994 and am an advocate of our youth program. I was very active as a junior member of our state association and still remain active as the president of the Louisiana Maine-Anjou Association. While attending Louisiana State University at Alexandria and Alcorn State University, I continued to maintain and operate our family farm while pursuing an undergraduate degree in business administration and political science and a masters degree in agricultural economics. I currently operate our family businesses, as well as our family farm and continue to grow and improve our cow-calf operation. We focus on raising replacement females, herd bulls and a small amount of show cattle. I believe that all cattle must work in the pasture not just in a showring. Our operation is strongly involved in the promotion of Maine-Anjou genetics in the South to small cow-calf operations. One of the best partnerships is with Alcorn State University that focuses on the education of small commercial breeders in southwest Mississippi and Louisiana. We also promote Maine-Anjou genetics through many youth activities throughout the state. I believe that Maine-Anjou genetics have not even begun to take their rightful place in the modern cattle industry. Our breed has so much to offer from marbling, milk, docility, feed efficiency and longevity that the rest of the industry has yet to realize. The future of the Maine-Anjou breed is bright and strong. We have something to offer every operation in this country. We as breeders are willing to improve genetics and embrace the future of the industry. We are focus driven and realize that we need to promote ourselves to the cattlemen of the future. 56

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2013

Cory Thomsen Region 2 Born and raised in Wayne county Nebraska, Thomsen grew up exhibiting livestock, livestock judging and an active member of 4-H. He attended Northeast Community College and the University of Nebraska where he earned his degree in Animal Science. Upon completion of college, Thomsen has had the opportunity of working with many of the top Maine-Anjou programs across the United States. It was in 1997 during the National Western Stock Show that Thomsen became fascinated with the Maine-Anjou breed while helping Fred DeRouchey in the yards. Thomsen could see the endless possibilities the Maine-Anjou breed had to offer. Thomsen says it has always been a well known fact that Maine-Anjou genetics are necessary to compete in the showring. But today it is apparent Maine-Anjou genetics offer better gains, increased yields and larger profit for commercial producers across the country. Thomsen points out that Maine-Anjou are the best of both worlds, showring dominance and commercial acceptability. Data collection is the future of the breed, says Thomsen. With the help of Dave Steen the MaineAnjou breed has put together the ground work for great things to come. Thomsen says we as breeders need to participate in more feed trials, bull tests and other data gathering avenues so we can prove with solid facts how outstanding the Maine-Anjou breed is. Thomsen looks forward to a bright future in the Maine-Anjou breed and working with the great people associated with it.

Board Profiles

Mike O’Hara Region 2

My wife Diana and I started using Maine-Anjou genetics 40 years ago on commercial angus females. We have raised our four children in north central Montana and have been fortunate to have our two sons, Heath and Hardy, return to our family farm with college business degrees. We are operating O’Hara Land & Cattle, a general partnership and family operation including small grains and cattle. I have previously served on the National Maine-Anjou board and put most of my energy with the beef improvement committee. Our operation has always emphasized performance, complete records and functional cattle with a lot of selection pressure geared with our commercial customers in mind. O’Hara Land & Cattle conducts an annual bull and heifer sale in March. The bulls are vigorously culled and genetically tested, ultrasounded with EPDs inclusive of performance records. After this many years of involvement in the breed, our name is identified with Maine-Anjou cattle in our region and surrounding states. Maine-Anjou cattle are the strongest multi-trait breed of the continental breeds that were brought to North America in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Whether it is feed efficiency, feedlot gain or retail cuts, our breed has animals that excel in the industry as well as the showring. What our greatest challenge, I feel, is identifying the animals and bloodlines that propagate these qualities. Record keeping and EPDs are industry standards for quantifying these traits and breeders need to emphasize this in their breeding programs. I congratulate the present AMAA board for committing to the Genotyping Research Project. Maines excel in many traits, but we as breeders need to be more conscious of the big picture in growing this breed into the commercial sector. We must promote the breed as a valuable tool in the commercial industry from birth to the end consumer. This breed has those traits and will grow if we put our resources

and energy towards that goal. O’Hara Land & Cattle continues to have cattle in our local and state shows that excel. This has been very rewarding but at the same time some of our most rewarding moments have been when our commercial customers raise Maine sired cattle that excel in the feedlot and at slaughter, making their beef operations more profitable. The bottom line is PROFIT and making better cattle for the beef industry using Maine-Anjou genetics is key. The rewards will be great for cattlemen who select for those goals.

John Griswold Region 3 My family started breeding my dad’s registered Angus cows to Cold Front around 1990. We liked the cattle and we started selling and marketing them across the country. We grew to love Maine genetics and increased our herd to be one of the largest MaineAnjou breeders in the country. Maines make awesome females, especially when used on an Angus base. As breeders, we need to let the market determine how we breed our cattle and not the association. The market will let us know the demands on our product. We have shown, sold breeding animals and fed and killed our own steers out of our Maine influenced genetics. As long as we keep everything in perspective of what the end result is all about and keep marketing our product we will have a demand for Maine influenced cattle. They are known for their thickness, muscle and power, we can’t deviate away from that by chasing other association’s fads. The market place for the Maine-Anjou breed is huge if we go about it right, we need to concentrate on what we are good at. We advertise nationally and promote Maines in all of our sales, we participate in the She’s A Lady Shoot Out and are one of the biggest registers in the breed.

Barry Nowatzke At-Large

Barry Nowatzke was born and raised on his family farm in Michigan City, Ind. Barry now owns and operates Nowatzke Cattle, a 200 head cow-calf operation along with 500 acres of row crops and 200 acres of alfalfa and grass hay. Nowatzke started raising and selling club calves over 20 years ago. One reason Barry decided to raise Maine-Anjou cattle is the extreme impact Maine-Anjou cows and bulls have had on the club calf industry. It enabled him to utilize his Maine influenced cows to start breeding high percentage cattle. Another thing that caught Barry’s attention about the MaineAnjou business was how sought after top quality Maine-Anjou show heifers are. Barry feels their ability to compete in supreme champion female drives helps to keep the demand strong. Having earned top honors

58

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2013

at Maine-Anjou junior nationals, Kansas City, Denver and Fort Worth, Barry knows first hand how well Maine-Anjou cattle can do in the showring. Show cattle are a large part of Barry’s operation, but as his operation has grown over the years he has realized how important the commercial bull and heifer are to producers. Barry has sold bulls in Denver and at the Ohio Beef Expo and he looks forward to continuing to sell in these events and to help make them more successful. Barry says, “If we keep emphasizing low birth weights and high weaning weights to the commercial cow producer, they will realize that Maine-Anjou bulls will help increase their profits. As we continue to get more Maine influence cattle in feed yards across the country, their performance will ultimately increase their demand.” Nowatzke looks forward to being involved in the breed to help keep pace and evolve with other breeds. He believes that the commercial attributes along with the showring value should make the Maine-Anjou breed one of the industries leaders. Barry’s plan is to remain involved in the MaineAnjou breed for years to come. Barry and his wife, Kristy, look forward to when their sons, Austin, 7 and Kayden, 3 can further influence the cattle industry which is always changing and is such a big part of their lives.

Devon served as the American Maine-Anjou Queen in 2007 and was also part of the 2009-2011 Hutchinson Community College livestock judging team. Her family’s ranch, Mid Continent Farms, raises and sells show steers and breeding stock across the United States. MCF owns 1,200 head of cattle including purebred Maine-Anjous among other breeds and farms 1,500 acres of tillable ground. Devon is a recent graduate of Kansas State University where she earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Agricultural Communications and Journalism. She enjoys traveling to different cattle shows, watching her brother steer wrestle on the professional level and attending Kansas State sporting events. Devon is extremely excited to once again, travel the country with the junior board representing the American Maine-Anjou Association. AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2013

edication, work ethic and tradition are three words that come to mind when watching Arkansas’ Clark family exhibiting at a cattle show. Jeremy and Andrea Clark, of Romance, Ark. and their three daughters Chancee, 10; Carlee, 8; and Chloee, 6 can be seen working together at shows all year long. The couple actually met while they were showing cattle in Arkansas. Both attended Conners State College in Oklahoma and then went on to the University of Arkansas and were members of the livestock judging team. The Clark girls have been showing for several years and even though they are all only a decade old or younger, they also have many accomplishments under their belts. “It’s nice to win shows, but we really like to see the dedication our daughters have for their animals and learning how to take care of them,” says Jeremy. “We are very proud of how they can show their calves and show such poise for being so young.” 70

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2013

Both Chancee and Carlee have been in the top three in showmanship at the National Junior MaineAnjou show. This year, Chancee was first in junior showmanship and Carlee placed third at the show in Grand Island, Neb. They became active in showing Maine-Anjou cattle so their daughters could start showing sooner and liked the versatility of the breed and how it fit in with their program since they also raise club calves. Chancee and Carlee started showing at the national show when each was five. By starting at a very young age, extra work was done at home to be sure the girls could handle their animals. They have also shown at the American Royal as well as many jackpot shows in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri. The Clarks take pride in showing cattle they have raised. At her first junior nationals, Chancee exhibited the reserve grand champion bred and owned heifer. Carlee’s first calf was named grand champion steer in both the bred and owned show and the owned show at junior nationals. “It’s fun to be able to raise the cattle our daughter’s show,” says Jeremy. Besides watching their daughters become good showman and be successful in the showring, the Clarks also enjoy watching their customers become successful. Left: Chancee and Carlee after Chancee was named reserve grand champion bred & owned MaineTainer female at the 2013 junior national.

Feature

Their herd consists of about 50 cows with the goal of raising Maine-Anjou, Mainetainer, Chianina and club calves for show cattle. They also do embryo work on their six donor cows. Each year they sell about 60 show calves through their November heifer sale and private treaty steers sales throughout the year. They reserve a flush on each heifer sold in their annual sale, to help provide high-quality show cattle in future years and to show their customers they are confident in the cattle they are showing. “Our customers have been great and have helped us gain credibility with others as well as gain more customers,” says Jeremy. Even though Jeremy and Andrea mostly showed within their state growing up, they travel extensively now. Their girls show at the National Junior MaineAnjou show each summer and at the American Royal in the fall. They also travel to the National Western Stock Show and North American International Livestock Exposition to help customers. They hope their daughters will be able to show at those shows in the future also. The Clarks have sold cattle into six of the surrounding states and travel to help these families manage their cattle at home and at exhibitions. When the calf is sold, the work isn’t done, as they will help the families with proper nutrition decisions and breeding decisions, as well as clipping and foot trimming. Jeremy says they also work together with other cattle breeders and sellers when finding the right animal for a family. “It’s important to be able to get along with everyone in this business because we can all help each other reach the common goal,” he says. Working together with others has allowed him to have success. He has sold the champion steer at the Arkansas State Fair seven of the past ten years and

has also sold the reserve champion four of those years. “Through our own kids and our customers, we have been able to prove our abilities and gain confidence of others,” he says. The Clark girls have stuck with showing MaineAnjou and Chianina cattle so Jeremy could help his customers with many other breeds. While his daughters have had success in the ring with their calves, he has also sold cattle that have done well at Angus, Simmental and Charolais shows and a steer that is being shown by the Edwards family in Missouri this year has been extremely successful. In the future they would like to extend their sales to including an online sale to reach out to even more people across the country. The Clarks spend a lot of time with show cattle, but that only makes up a portion of their income. Jeremy also has a custom hay baling business to make some extra income. He bales 5,000 to 10,000 big round bales each year. The girls really drive to be the best they can in the showring, but just like other kids they have interests outside the showring. Chancee enjoys playing softball and Carlee enjoys tumbling and gymnastics. Little sister, Chloee, wanted to do something different than her sisters, so she shows pigs. The whole family helps out on the farm, including both Jeremy and Andrea’s parents. “We couldn’t do all this traveling without the support of our family helping out at shows and taking care of the cattle at home while we are gone,” says Jeremy. At the end of each day, the Clark family knows their dedication to what they love may not get them a purple ribbon every time, but they have had the opportunity to work together as a family and have taught their daughters what it takes to be successful.
