VIEWPOINT

CHAROLAIS Listening & Learning v.2.0

A platform to discuss relevant issues

T

he second edition of AICA’s Listening & Learning is now in the books. We extend a sincere thanks to Virginia Tech University, Blacksburg, Virginia, for hosting our group of more than 50 registered and commercial Charolais producers for the event. The Listening & Learning event was developed to serve as a platform to discuss relevant issues presented by beef industry thought leaders. An initial overarching goal was to select geographic regions to host the event. The event would then focus on production and marketing issues that differentiated a particular geographic region from other parts of the country. Another goal of the event was to bridge the disconnect between industry sectors by presenting a consistent narrative that, regardless of geographic location, the predictability of quality and pounds matter. Each speaker discussed issues relative to their research and expertise. One of the underlying realities is the fact that almost no part of beef production today fits in a traditional box, largely due to the rapid expansion of technology, access to genetic information and value-based marketing. Within their respective discipline, each

herd. Amen’s reviewed the benefits of crossbreeding, stressing the often-under-valued maternal hybrid vigor or the benefit to a calf from having a crossbred mother. Calf survivability, longevity of the cow and added growth are just a few of the benefits of having a crossbred dam. Dr. Amen’s suggested commercial cow-calf producers consider keeping F1 replacements if their marketing strategy is to market “smoky” steers. She discussed the genetic trends indicating that mature cow size is as moderate in many Charolais influenced cow herds as the straight British herds. Brian Bertelsen, Vice President of Field Operations, U.S. Premium Beef, presented information relative to USPB membership as well as what the fourth largest packer, National Beef, wants in cattle delivered. Bertelsen stated there was no argument that pounds are a critical component to success on the USPB grid, but the value of those pounds are determined by quality. In fact, quality grade is the largest component of the per head premiums earned. He spoke about increased muscling, pounds and dressing percentage being a distinct advantage to using Charolais genetics. Bertelsen also stressed

One of the underlying realities is the fact that almost no part of beef production today fits in a traditional box, largely due to the rapid expansion of technology, access to genetic information and value-based marketing. presenter discussed specifics useful in progressive registered and commercial cow-calf operations. Brief summaries from the a few of the presenters and discussions follow. Austin Paul, commodity cattle buyer and commercial cow-calf producer discussed the typical marketing challenges for any breed against a black-hided animal but stressed the value of Charolais influence by adding pounds and increased dressing percentage. Paul utilizes approximately 50 Charolais bulls each year to service his cow herd and retains ownership on all his home-raised calves. As a partner in a group of auction markets in the region, he went on to discuss the marketing advantages of uniformity in a commodity marketing environment. AICA genetic consultant, Dr. Sally Northcutt, stressed the importance of continuing to collect performance and phenotypic data. She explained the single-step genetic evaluation implemented at AICA in December 2017 and reminded breeders that genomic information is not a substitute for phenotypic data such as weaning and yearling weights. Northcutt said, “Submitting of performance information by breeders becomes critical in terms of enhancing the reliability of expected progeny differences or EPDs.” Dr. Tonya Amen, Ph.D, National Center for Beef Excellence, discussed the importance of heterosis in much of the nation’s cow

the need, across all production sectors, to improving the health of cattle moving into feedyards. Dr. Dan Eversole, Ph.D, director of beef cattle programs, discussed the purebred herd at Virginia Tech University. Today, the purebred herd consists of four breeds; Angus, Hereford, Simmental and Charolais. Eversole explained that more than twenty years ago, it became evident a continental breed needed to be added to the purebred herd to compliment the English breeds. The University selected Charolais as the first continental influence. The breed has played an important role in research and information discoveries relative to improving the beef industry. Dr. Eversole commented, “I can honestly say, I think our Charolais herd is the strongest in terms of their EPD profile and overall phenotype and functionality.” As we plan for the L&L 2019 sessions, it’s important to remember that the topics and presenters, representing a diverse cross section of beef production, are not intended to always agree. Improving mass populations of cattle require objective discussions, scientific research, massive amounts of data, strategic marketing and most importantly, industry relevance. Today, the importance of adding value to a calf, regardless of how that calf is marketed, is more than an intellectual exercise. The Charolais breed has proven its relevance across all production sectors and geographic regions of America.

Many other reports are available including performance reports and ultrasound reports. Ultrasound barn sheets can be generated using the report function. You have the option to print barn sheets by calving year or by individual animals. Printing quick copies of individual certificates is another useful enhancement of the “reports” function.

CPI BOARD

Members use the Herd EPD reports to keep up on the most current numbers for the animals in their herd. This list can be sorted by sex and listed in several different orders. There is also the option to choose a birth date range. Under the “tools” tab, you will find a new “Data Export” button. This data export gives you the flexibility to export data on animals in your herd and use those data files in your own management packages. You can download and save the files directly to your computer in a CSV (can be opened in Excel) format. There are many options within this feature including selecting the type of animal to export and specific data.

Listening and Learning Session in Blacksburg, VA

Brings Pounds to the Forefront of Charolais Advantages by Linda Eck

I

t’s what every cattleman wants….more Pounds! And pounds it was as many discussions evolved around the Charolais breed’s consistent ability to add more pounds and profit during the second annual Listening & Learning Industry Session held July 14 in Blacksburg, Va. Speakers from throughout the industry brought insight to the group of more than 50 Charolais and commercial breeders who attended the event held at the Alphin-Stuart Livestock Teaching Arena on the campus of Virginia Tech. The day-long session was designed to allow producers and industry leaders the opportunity to gather together and discuss the most effective says of maximizing Charolais genetics. “The state of the cattle business today offers great opportunity for the Charolais breed to move forward,” AICA Breed Improvement Chairman Rex Ricketts, Ph.D., told the group following brief welcoming remarks by J. Neil Orth, executive vice president of the AICA. Ricketts served as moderator for the session which drew attendees from 10 states. Orth told the group the Listening & Learning session will provide educational tools that can be used by commercial and seedstock producers alike, as over 15,000 videos of last year’s event have been shared through Facebook and the association’s

website. He also recognized other AICA representatives attending and available for questions. These included President Larry Ludeke of Liverpool, Texas; Vice President Mike Schumacher of Bowling Green, Mo.; Silas Maxwell, Area 13 Director from Mosheim, Tenn., and Dotty Macy Area 14 Director from Street, Md. Association staff attending were David Hobbs, Director of Activities, Maggie Smithee, Assistant Recording Secretary and Floyd Wampler, Southeast Field Representative. Jeff Harrod, President of the Kentucky Charolais Association and Richard Meadows, past President of the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association were also in attendance. Opening their doors as host to this unique event, Virginia Tech was represented by Dan Eversole, Ph.D. and Bain Wilson, Ph.D. both of the university’s Department of Animal and Poultry Sciences. Eversole, who heads up the beef cattle management program pulled from the university’s Charolais herd to provide three classes for a livestock judging contest to start the day. Virginia Tech maintains four purebred herds. In addition to the Charolais herd which was started 20 years ago, the university has Angus, Hereford and Simmental herds with total inventory capping out at 120 head.

Brett Spader and Tonya Amen of the National Center for Beef Excellence worked with the AICA Breed Improvement Committee and were instrumental in formatting industry segment discussions which began mid-morning and continued to mid-afternoon. Lunch was provided by Bovine Elite.

Both pointed to Smithee’s presentation as very helpful.

Practical Reality: Finding Added Value for Charolais-Influenced Feeder Cattle in the Southeastern U.S.

Leading discussion that set the stage for the day, Austin Paul put a practical scope on the day-to-day realities of profitable cattle production and marketing. Although pounds seemed to surface to the top, discussions “The number one thing we sell is pounds,” said Paul, a on the best routes for developing and marketing those pounds livestock dealer and order buyer for 20 years. He quickly made were also hot topics. Management practices, association his point by noting that “English cattle need help with that and programs and even help navigating the AICA computer system, Charolais can increase weaning weights by 25 to 50 pounds.” were all part of the dialogue along with a focus on location. Working with seven livestock markets throughout Kentucky, Many discussions led to problems affiliated with raising cattle in Paul also told the crowd, “You gotta get west to market these the southeastern segment of the United States. cattle without issue, but at the end of the day it all boils down to weight winning.” Speakers leading the discussions included: “You gotta cross them with something,” added the lifetime Austin Paul of Paris, Ky., partner in Eugene Barber & Sons cattle buyer. “Straight Charolais is a pretty hard sell. When they Cattle Co., Lexington, Ky. asked me to speak at this, I first thought – You go to Virginia Brian Bertelsen, Vice President Field Operations, U.S. and try to sell Charolais cattle - that’s a trick!” Premium Beef, Dodge City, Kan. “Black cattle are bringing a little extra right now,” said Paul. Bain Wilson, Ph.D., Virginia Tech Department of Animal and “But they’re not bringing enough extra to offset what you’re Poultry Sciences losing in weight because at the end of the day, weight is what Tonya Amen, Ph.D., National Center for Beef Excellence, we’re trying to sell.” Kansas City, Mo. Pointing to a slide show of Charolais-cross calves he Sally Northcutt, Ph.D., AICA backgrounds on his own farm, he Breed Improvement Consultant, St. noted, “These Charolais crosses Joseph, Mo. will yield when finished, probably in the 64 to 66 range. Avoiding a conflict of interest, Paul does not sell feeder cattle. Instead he sends them all to feed and retains ownership. When questioned about his practices he said because of the Charolais influence he sends his cattle to the Western Corn Belt where they are fed and ultimately sold on a hot basis. “They’ll out yield the average and I feel like I can make some money by selling them in Nebraska and places like that,” he said. Subsequently Paul was asked if he received any premiums. No premiums, I just get paid by weight,” he said. “That’s where the extra weight excels.” When asked about retaining ownership, he said he originally did it to avoid any conflict of interest. Now, he noted, “Retaining ownership is kinda like marriage it’s hard to quit without consequences.” Paul was then questioned as to how Charolais producers could convince local feed yards to seek Charolais-cross calves. “Right here in Virginia the eastern packers have survived by specializing in higher quality animals. That’s the only way they’ve kept the Tyson’s and Cargill’s of the world from running over the top of them.” “It’s kind of a tough sell right here locally,” he added. “These guys were raising black-haired cattle here when nobody wanted them - before CAB and U.S. Premium. I think that the only thing you have to sell them with is pounds.” He was also questioned on his bull buying criteria, and specifically if he seeks out carcass traits. He quickly noted that he relies on field representatives, “the people out there that know much more than me,” to gather his bulls. “Carcass trait EPDs mean nothing to me because no one is paying me extra to do it.” In support of Charolais advantages he did note however that “A guy with a half-way decent set of cows can make his calves look like he’s got something. It’s almost like an upgrade for the cow. It’s super important to have a cross with them.” Finally, Paul said the cattle industry as a whole has done a good job. “It’s pretty hard to find a bad steak anymore.” However, he also noted the industry has been blindsided by quality. “They’re forgetting about growth – they’re forgetting about what pays the bills and that’s pounds of cattle.”

Enthusiastic Software Tech Surfaces as Judging Contest Winner

At conclusion of the day, Dan Eversole announced winners of the Listening and Learning Livestock Judging Contest. There were two divisions, junior and adult. Top winners were awarded a one-year membership in the American-International Charolais Association and a one-year subscription to the Charolais Journal. Attendees had the opportunity earlier in the day to evaluate three classes featuring yearling bulls, mature cows and replacement heifers. Winner of the junior division was Turner Leigh of Leesburg, Va. Emerging as winner of the adult division was a young software technician from Alexandria, Va. The ambition of Tom Robison, a Kansas native and former Labette County 4-Her, to “be raising cattle in Virginia” brought him to the Listening & Learning Session and ultimately to a membership in the AICA. Robison said he found out about the session on Thursday through his membership in the Virginia Cattlemen’s Association and drove four hours to be at the Saturday event. With a history of showing Limousin while back in Kansas, the K-State ag engineering graduate found the L & L session insightful as he sets his goals on becoming a Virginia cattle producer.

American-International Charolais Association Docility Score Data Collection

T

he economic benefits of docile cattle have been documented in the beef industry. Poor temperament has been shown to negatively impact beef production through every industry segment. Benefits of animal docility can be realized in the cow-calf operation, in feedlot performance, and in carcass product quality. Beef cattle breed organizations have readily begun to collect and analyze docility scores, as this trait is reported to be moderately heritable indicating that selection strategies to improve docility can be effective. In many cases, Docility EPDs are available for commercial and seedstock breeders to use in their selection programs. The AICA database does not currently have docility performance scores available to explore temperament trait development for the Charolais breed. Charolais breeders are encouraged to submit docility scores on bull and heifer calves at weaning using chute score system to evaluate disposition or temperament. This score is individually recorded on a contemporary group of weaned calves. The dam is not scored, but rather her calf at weaning with other contemporary calves. The AICA-adopted scoring system that can be referenced in the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Guidelines is a chute score to evaluate disposition or temperament as cattle are processed through a chute. A summary of this system is given in Table 1 below. Table 1. Docility Score Systema – Chute Score Method

The scores should be assigned by the breeder consistently within the contemporary group of calves at weaning. Scores should be collected while S E P T E M B E R 2018

H

ey everybody, my name is Cagney Effling and I’m from Highmore, South Dakota. I am 19 years old and am currently a sophomore on the livestock judging team at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in Miami, Oklahoma. My current major is in Animal Science and next fall I plan on transferring to Oklahoma State University. My family and I run a purebred Charolais, Simmental and Hereford operation as well as an extensive embryo program where we sell pregnant recips.

she got away from me she proceeded to beller and spin in a circle like a reigning horse.

Q: If you could go back to one day in your life, what day would it be and why?

A: If I could go back to one day, it would be the day I

won the U-Fit-It contest at the South Dakota State Fair. The reason I would go back to that day is because I would want to take in all the people who I was surrounded by that were cheering me on. I look back at pictures and Q: What are your hobbies/interest? am overwhelmed by the amount of support that I had A: My whole life I have been around agriculture, so that’s and I think it would be incredible to go back and take in primarily what my hobbies and interests relate to. I love everyone’s emotions. spending time in the showbarn with my two sisters; going to cattle shows is what we do together, and I spend majority Q: What is your favorite thing about the Charolais of my time doing that when I’m not at school. Livestock breed? judging is another strong passion of mine and I truly enjoy A: My favorite thing about the Charolais breed is their my time doing it. Otherwise, I value the time I get to spend ability to produce high growth and high performing with my family. offspring who have a lot of stamina from the second they

Q: What is your favorite thing about being on the Junior Board?

A: My favorite thing about being on the Junior Board is getting to interact with all of the people of the Charolais breed. I am not one to shy away from people, so I love getting to meet up with not only the juniors of the breed of the breeders as well.

hit the ground.

Q: What are some of your future goals? A: Livestock judging is something I love to do and one of

my goals is for my team to win a National Championship. I also have a strong passion for the cattle that I raise, so another one of my goals is to raise a National Champion Female.

Q: What is your favorite thing about showing cattle? Q: What do you want to do after college? A: Showing cattle has many opportunities if you allow A: I have developed an interest in Ag Policy and am

yourself to see them, and that is probably my favorite part. Whether it be joining a junior board or just showing a calf for the first time there are endless paths that you can go down that help you to grow as a person.

Q: What is your most embarrassing show ring moment?

A: When I was about 12 years old at the South Dakota

State Fair I was showing a Simmental heifer calf. It was the first time she had ever been shown and her name was “Naughty Girl.” We had made through most of the class and suddenly she decided she did not like the show halter. She started bellering and eventually got away from me. Once 32  

currently in the process of discovering opportunities within that spectrum. I think that it is very important for our industry leaders to promote our lifestyle. Also, I want to continue my small herd that is composed of elite females along with my family.

Q: If you could be any person in the world for one day, who would it be and why?

A: I would want to be Donald Trump for a day. I think it

would be interesting to be in a role where everything and everyone depends on you and your decisions. I also think it would be neat to see what all goes in to a day in the White House and some of the topics that get discussed. CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

The sires you see before you are instruments. We blend their genetics to bring you cattle with impeccable structure, feet & legs, and a balance of desirable traits that produce superior results in your calf crop. We supply Charolais bulls with calving ease that rival Angus, yet their calves will perform at peak levels. Furthermore, they will add marbling, yet maintain higher yield grades than their black-hided counterparts. These are not your traditional terminal cross, high birthweight Charolais bulls. Females sired by Sturgess Double S Charolais bulls provide longevity, fertility and wean big calves--year after year.

Range Bulls--Herd Sire Prospects--Semen--Available now at Private Treaty. Watch for our annual consignments to: The San Antonio All Breeds Bull Show & Sale in February--breeders of the High Grading Bull Overall in 2015 & 2017.

Durations of Persistent Effectiveness 150 days 100 days 100 days 120 days 120 days 120 days 120 days 100 days 150 days

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin) should be given only by subcutaneous injection in front of the shoulder at the recommended dosage level of 1 mg eprinomectin per kg body weight (1 mL per 110 lb body weight). WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS Withdrawal Periods and Residue Warnings Animals intended for human consumption must not be slaughtered within 48 days of the last treatment. This drug product is not approved for use in female dairy cattle 20 months of age or older, including dry dairy cows. Use in these cattle may cause drug residues in milk and/or in calves born to these cows. A withdrawal period has not been established for pre-ruminating calves. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal. Animal Safety Warnings and Precautions The product is likely to cause tissue damage at the site of injection, including possible granulomas and necrosis. These reactions have disappeared without treatment. Local tissue reaction may result in trim loss of edible tissue at slaughter. Observe cattle for injection site reactions. If injection site reactions are suspected, consult your veterinarian. This product is not for intravenous or intramuscular use. Protect product from light. LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin) has been developed specifically for use in cattle only. This product should not be used in other animal species. When to Treat Cattle with Grubs LONGRANGE effectively controls all stages of cattle grubs. However, proper timing of treatment is important. For the most effective results, cattle should be treated as soon as possible after the end of the heel fly (warble fly) season. Environmental Hazards Not for use in cattle managed in feedlots or under intensive rotational grazing because the environmental impact has not been evaluated for these scenarios. Other Warnings: Underdosing and/or subtherapeutic concentrations of extendedrelease anthelmintic products may encourage the development of parasite resistance. It is recommended that parasite resistance be monitored following the use of any anthelmintic with the use of a fecal egg count reduction test program. TARGET ANIMAL SAFETY Clinical studies have demonstrated the wide margin of safety of LONGRANGE® (eprinomectin). Overdosing at 3 to 5 times the recommended dose resulted in a statistically significant reduction in average weight gain when compared to the group tested at label dose. Treatment-related lesions observed in most cattle administered the product included swelling, hyperemia, or necrosis in the subcutaneous tissue of the skin. The administration of LONGRANGE at 3 times the recommended therapeutic dose had no adverse reproductive effects on beef cows at all stages of breeding or pregnancy or on their calves. Not for use in bulls, as reproductive safety testing has not been conducted in males intended for breeding or actively breeding. Not for use in calves less than 3 months of age because safety testing has not been conducted in calves less than 3 months of age. STORAGE Store at 77° F (25° C) with excursions between 59° and 86° F (15° and 30° C). Protect from light. Made in Canada. Manufactured for Merial, Inc., Duluth, GA, USA. You may only have them a short time.

B U T YOUR commitment IS

LONG-TERM. That’s Why You Need LongRange®(eprinomectin) For Up To 150 Days Of Parasite Control.1 Looking out over your herd, the sight is full of potential. But if you used a short-term dewormer like Cydectin® (moxidectin) or Dectomax® (doramectin) on your stockers, you’re not getting the most out of your pasture. That’s because cattle were probably reinfected with parasites just halfway through the grazing season.

Only LONGRANGE delivers true season-long control.1

40 lbs.

In just 104 days, LONGRANGE steers gained 40 lbs. more over those treated with CYDECTIN + SAFE-GUARD® (fenbendazole).2

Out here, there is no time for shortcuts. This year, think LONGRANGE.

theLONGRANGElook.com Caution: Federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.Warnings and Precautions: For use in cattle only, not for use in humans or other animal species. Keep out of reach of children. Not for use in breeding bulls, or in calves less than 3 months of age. Not for use in cattle managed in feedlots or under intensive rotational grazing. Not for use in female dairy cattle 20 months of age or older, including dry dairy cows, or in veal calves. Post injection site damage (e.g., granulomas, necrosis) can occur; these reactions have disappeared without treatment. Not for intravenous or intramuscular use. Do not underdose. Do not treat within 48 days of slaughter. Available in 500 mL, 250 mL and 100 mL bottles.

Dependent upon parasite species, as referenced in FOI summary and LONGRANGE product label. Administer subcutaneously at 1 mL/110 lbs. Results based on actual on-farm comparative demonstration. International Participants looking at a high quality set of cows and calves at High Bluff Stock Farm.

AIJCA President Teanna Simpson Participates in Charolais International Youth Program Teanna travels to the CCYA Conference

(Canadian Charolais Youth Association)

By: Teanna Simpson

G

rowing up in the Charolais breed, I have been able to have some of the most amazing experiences. This year most definitely holds true; Being able to attend the CCYA Conference (Canadian Charolais Youth Association) and to be a part of the Charolais International Youth Program has been such an honor. I was able to meet many people from across the world that all shared a common passion, the Charolais breed. Over the course of eight days we actively participated in the CCYA conference, as well as visited different Charolais farms and ranches. The 2018 CCYA was held in Brandon, Manitoba. I was able to participate in the conference as an international youth member. We were split into 9 separate groups that had participants from the ages of 6 to 21 and were from all over Canada as well as the world. No parent participation was allowed so it was all hands on deck as participants worked together to set up stalls and take care of cattle for the next five days. I can honestly say I have never seen a group of individuals that can come together and do the work that they did without ever even knowing each other. Not only did I get to participate in CCYA, I was able to represent the United States and AIJCA as the Champion International Aggregate. It was an honor to be able to participate in the CCYA events. We participated in contests that ranged from team fitting, team Judging, individual judging, and even a cook-off contest. (They told me they took that idea from the States!) Participating in the CCYA conference and getting to see some amazing kids exhibit their cattle was a highlight, but the next best thing we did was visit farms and ranches around the Manitoba Province. We were able to visit operations like

78  

S E P T E M B E R 2018

Steppler Farms where they showed us their calving facilities – which was wildly different than anything I had ever seen – as well as their honey business. The facilities consisted of huge barns, lots of bedding, a private vet facility, and cameras set up so they had round the clock surveillance when calving season was upon them. Definitely a very cool thing to see. We also got to walk through some herds of cattle at High Bluff Stock Farm and Hunter Charolais. These farms and many more opened their homes to us, fed us and showed us high quality Charolais cattle. This has by far been one of the best experiences I have ever had. I have made some great connections in the agriculture industry as well as some really good friends from all over the world. This has made an impact on my life and allowed me to better understand agriculture and even more so the Charolais industry. It was quite sad and funny on the last night my roommate and I said our goodbyes as we were all leaving early the next morning. It didn’t feel like I had just met this person, or these people. It felt like I had known them my entire life. This program doesn’t just give you the opportunity to see Charolais youth programs as well as cattle from around the world. It developed friendships between 12 people from 8 different countries. I can truly say we will be friends for a lifetime. This might have been a trial run for the program, but it was a life changing experience for me. I hope that every year Charolais International can continue to host youth from all over the world and bring them together to see cattle and make incredible friendships like I did in eight very short days.
