VIEWPOINT

CHAROLAIS

Who says we can’t be a nimble industry?

When challenged, they figure it out.

Q

uite often, traditional industries, like the livestock industry, are labeled as being stodgy, generational and resistant to change. The year 2020 has proven those labels to be as

outdated as a rotary dial telephone. Since the first quarter of 2020, every sector of livestock and food animal production has been affected by the pandemic. Seedstock producers quickly realized they had to be nimble to figure out how to have spring production sales. How do you replace the competition that takes place when a barn full of interested bidders cannot attend your sale? They quickly regrouped and increased

supply and changed their family’s behavior from dining out to preparing meals at home. We’ve seen a renewed interest in local processing plants. Some cow-calf producers have begun to offer “farm to fork” custom and locally processed beef. Some states are renewing the legislative process to incentivize more localized meat processing. Thanks to the decades of diligence among seedstock producers that have embraced genomic information, progressive producers are far more confident today in the quality of cattle that leave their ranch gate. Another bright light in cattle and beef production is the lack of growth in the plant-based meat substitute landscape. A recent

As producers have done for generations, when challenged, they figure it out. This pandemic is simply another challenge, just like blizzards, wildfires, tornadoes, derechos, drought, floods and economic swings in the market. access to internet bidding, videoed more lots and increased their digital presence. Customer services, such as free delivery and guaranteed sight unseen purchases, were expanded. No matter what, 2020 has not been business as usual. AICA focused on expanding internet platforms like Charauctions.com and reaching out to Charolais producers to assist in their efforts. The pandemic has forced industry stakeholders, including the AICA staff, to work remotely for months. In-person meetings were restructured and became remote, using video conferencing technology most of us didn’t know existed, much less how to use it! Livestock shows have been cancelled or restructured to limit attendance to exhibitors only. Almost overnight, processor stakeholders were challenged to revamp entire plants. Processors struggled to keep the finished beef supply moving, support a workforce that was becoming sicker by the hour, and implement unprecedented mitigation efforts, all while spinning on a dime to change the entire fabrication process and get a perishable product out the door to a panicked consumer. Debate continues about how the pandemic has decimated some segments of the market and what recovery will look like in 2021. However, survey after survey reveals some very good indicators for beef. The pandemic has had a tragic impact on dine-in restaurants. The number of restaurants that have closed permanently or filed for bankruptcy is astonishing. But, meat sales in supermarkets has only been limited by our industry’s capacity to deliver product. Both fresh meat and deli meat sales rose in supermarkets in 2020. Consumers consistently signaled their confidence in a safe food

survey conducted by 210 Analytics LLC for the Food Marketing Institute and the North American Meat Institute, reported, “The survey found that 56% of Americans have prepared plantbased meat alternative at home, but most only tried them once or prepared them every few months at most. Only 25% of respondents say they like the taste.” One of the last statements in the report might be the most telling. “Spending [on plant-based alternatives] is peaking among 35 to 44-year olds—which also is the core age group that purchases claims-based meat and poultry.” In other words, the demographic spending the most on plant-based alternatives is the same group whose purchases are driven by claims, not necessarily facts. Our production and marketing landscape will continue to be altered and challenged in the coming year. As producers have done for generations, when challenged, they figure it out. This pandemic is simply another challenge, just like blizzards, wildfires, tornadoes, derechos, drought, floods and economic swings in the market. Like always, AICA members and Charolais producers are on the leading edge of adaptation to the new normal. Following the science isn’t new for Charolais producers. Science has enabled progressive producers to improve our product, regardless of production sector. Science will guide us out of this pandemic. As production and processing continue to return to near normal levels, it is important to recognize the positive relationship we have with a consumer that implicitly trusts our industry.

AICA DNA Requirements

AI Sires used “out of herd” and all Donor Dams must be DNA tested before calves can be registered. AICA recommends collecting DNA samples during the donor’s initial flush. Check the animal’s record to make sure the DNA work has been done before submitting registration papers. DNA kits are specific to the animal being tested. Contact Marilou Wegner to request a kit. AICA rules require signatures on bulls and dams you do not own. Signatures can be submitted online, fax, mail or e-mail. AICA’s on-line system can answer many questions. Log in with your breeder number and password: Get a copy of a certificate by holding your cursor on the “My Reports” tab and click into “Copy Certificate.” This is a quick way to get a copy of a paper. Duplicates of the original paper must be requested in writing and printed at the office. Keep track of your account by using the “My Account” tab. Click into “My Billing” and see the fees charged to your account. Your current balance is listed in the upper right-hand corner of the page. AICA does not have on-line bill pay. Your most current herd EPDs are located under the “My Reports” tab, click into “Herd EPD Report”. This report can be sorted in many ways, giving you the most updated information. Also under “My Reports” are Ultrasound Barn Sheets. These can be generated as a calving group or individual animals. Go to Ultrasound Barn Sheet by year for the whole calving year group or use the “Custom” report for just a few. Wondering how many signatures you have on specific AI sires? Go to “My Account” and choose AI Sire Signatures. Here you may give signatures on bulls you own or have signatures on. You may also view the list of bull signatures on file in your breeder number. Donor cow signatures are listed here also. The most up-to-date lab information on registered animals can be found using the “search” tool from the website home page. Search the animal by using the registration number, then click the animal line. Click the “LAB Results” tab to see all the lab results for that animal. You’ll find a description of all lab codes there also.

By Amy Blum

DeMers Farms LLC, Colome, South Dakota

T

he gentle prairie hills of southcentral South Dakota provide home to bountiful wildlife, diverse rural businesses, and plentiful herds of both Charolais and Charolais-influenced cattle. Only 20 miles north of the Nebraska border and about 10 miles west of the small town Colome, SD, you’ll also find a fourth-generation cow/calf operation whose headquarters lie on the land homesteaded by the family’s great grandfather in 1909. While the ranch size and business structure differ today, the root motivation for DeMers Farms LLC remains clear: faith, family, and farm life fuel bright futures. Brothers Bruce and Wes DeMers, along with their father Dennis and Bruce’s son-inlaw Daniel Stroud, maintain responsibility for the rigors of farm, ranch, and feedlot needs. The men of the operation don’t operate alone, however, and Bruce is quick to point out his wife Patty, Wes’s wife Lori, his mom Shirley, and his daughter Danielle not only provide helping hands but also faithful hearts in it all. “Our wives come from rural roots too,” Bruce says. “Even though we all do things around here differently, we all work together to make our ventures successful, even if the time spent on farm is only on the weekends or vacation days.” Patty has been a schoolteacher for 35 years and does all the farm bookwork. Lori manages the family’s truck stop, Flying D, which is in Colome near the intersection of US Highways 18 and 183. And though Bruce and Wes bought their parents out of the business more than a decade ago, Dennis continues to help with manual labor daily, and Shirley provides the crew’s daily noon meal. As many farm and ranch families can relate, the DeMers’ business is navigating the waters of generational transitioning. Currently, the plan is to bring Danielle & Daniel home to the farm full-time over the next five years. Until then, the couple and their two boys Rixon (4) and Ryken (21 months) live and work in Huron, SD. The two-and-a-half-hour commute doesn’t deter the family’s fifth generation though. “The difficulty of bringing someone home now has definitely increased since Wes and I did it, but I think we’ve got a plan, and I know the kids have the heart for it. I hope we keep growing. I hope Daniel takes steps forward in management

DeMers Farms LLC is now owned by Bruce and Wes. The brothers purchased the family business from their parents about 12 years ago; however, Dennis & Shirley (shown) both still help everyday.

but still finds me useful. Wes and I sure appreciate our dad being here every day,” Bruce shares. Generational transitioning adds complexity to an already difficult family business, so the DeMers Family believes in simplifying whenever possible. For them, Charolais bulls on their blackhided cows does just that without sacrificing quality, productivity, or opportunity. The family began using Charolais bulls about 12 years ago on the suggestion of a local cattle buyer. He told the brothers they needed some hybrid vigor from a breed with more stretch that could better handle the way they fed. They took his advice, purchased Charolais bulls from fellow Colome rancher Brian Odden, and didn’t look back. “I have never regretted or second guessed our decision,” Bruce says. “We needed calving ease and a calm, but hardy, disposition. We got all that while increasing our feed efficiency and weaning off bigger calves. Charolais really do take the way we feed well.” As example, Bruce notes the Charolais cross calves they market in January come across the scales about 720-pounds, fresh, and green. Compared to the way their former herd of black-hided calves performed, Bruce says the use of Charolais genetics is a no-brainer. The family calves over 430 head of commercial cows each spring to be weaned at roughly 450-pounds in October. Those calves are backgrounded until January and sold at auction. To balance their financial obligations, the family sells the bulk of their own calves. Then, they purchase about 200 head of Charolais-influenced calves and retain ownership through their own feedlot while also custom feeding between 700 and 900 head each year. “The business of it all is pretty simple actually,” Bruce says. “All of our payments are due in February so selling makes sense, and we’re not big enough operators to fill our pens with consistently sized cattle. The

combination of custom feeding and buying our own to feed has worked pretty well overall.” The family has come a long way since Wes and Bruce bought their first stock cows around 1982. Each brother also had about 20 milk cows. Bruce believes life is an on-going opportunity to learn, and he recognizes the business they’ve built in nearly four decades as continual learning. “We quit milking cows when we started breeding for Charolais calves. Those two decisions transformed our business,” he says. Much to Bruce and Wes’s surprise, others in the cattle industry also view them as continual learners and progressive promoters of high quality Charolais genetics. In early 2020, the family was chosen by the South Dakota Charolais Breeders Association as Commercial Producers of the Year. “It sounds cliché, I know, but we really were surprised and humbled by the honor,” Bruce says. “We’re just out here in rural America doing what works best for us, trying to live life well for both our family and community. It didn’t occur CHAROLAIS JOURNAL

to us that others might take notice, and we’re sure grateful for the recognition.” While schedules stay full of cow herd, feedlot, and farming responsibilities, the DeMers don’t let the work of it all overshadow time with family. Bruce and Patty’s second daughter Kasey is an occupational therapy assistant and her husband Austin Nelson is a police officer in Watertown, SD—a roughly four-hour trip from the ranch. Wes and Lori have three children. Daughter Brittany and her husband Randy Ringstmeyer live in Cheyenne, WY; daughter Ashley and husband Jay Supik live in Colome with their two children, and son Jade lives in Springdale, AR. “Our kids and grandkids are the greatest joys in our lives, right behind our wives of course,” Bruce shares with a twinkle in his voice. “I absolutely love and look forward to every minute of time we get together. There’s no doubt family businesses can be hard, but whether it’s on the farm or on one of our major family trips, I truly can’t think of any better way to spend our time than with our family.” N O V E M B E R 2 0 2 0   29
